I want to apologize ahead of time because this is not an ED specific question. I was wondering if you have any resources/advice for SWs or folks in “helping” professions who are coming out of an unsavory work environment? For background, I spent two years running groups in a residential facility that meshed corrections and drug treatment. It was not a great work environment at all, and 5 months of that environment I’m still feeling burnt-out. Being there reduced my capacity to care for myself and others, and I’m finding it really difficult to just be a person again. I recently interviewed for a community case management position to work with SUD clientele specifically (I’m a CDCA), but I’m still a bit shaken from the environment I’m coming out of. We talk about about self-care to avoid burn out in these professions, but it seems there is no help for those of us that do hit a wall and struggle getting back on track.
i love that you asked this, and are asking yourself about this! i have no special expertise here, but i'm going through this right now with masters-level social workers and i'll share some of our thoughts w you. first, the “helping” professions--and social work in particular--come from a history of white christian saviorism, typically affluent white xtian women who did "charity" work w poor populations in their cities. we know what that really is: social control under imperialist white supremacist capitalist patriarchy. and that's still descriptive of a lot of our work today, tbh. today, however, many more marginalized folks are the helpers themselves, and we are being seriously exploited as workers. so marginalized helpers are placed in the position of having to do reformist work to address the damage of systems that also target them. and this is most stark for black sws and helping professionals. as you know, burnout is the norm in the field you're in. this is unacceptable, an unacceptable working condition. as you've noted, the self-care rhetoric has been deployed against us, to make us responsible for cleaning up the mess these professions make of us. and, you do have some choice about how to proceed in a "helping" career, and which systems you want to be involved in (a graduate degree will give you a little more choice as well). you've so far been involved with some of the most difficult and oppressive systems, but you don't have to stay there. there are clinics, nonprofits, collectives, and other organizations that will treat you better, pay you better, and not subject you to the level of moral injury that strips you of your will to go on. that may be a (rare) community mental health or case management job, or it may not be. i would set your standards reasonably high--you deserve the most sustainable work you can find.
you don't have to fix anything or anyone; it's enough that you take good care of yourself. we won't unfuck the systems we're working in and, frankly, forced to collude with in these jobs. but we can still find meaningful work, exercise some self-determination, and be kind to ourselves. that may mean taking a different path than we'd started on, and that's a good thing. ask me any other questions you have!

What books may I ask?
Not sure which post this is referencing, I just finished "The Guild Hunter series" by Nalini Singh which is about 15 books including her novella compilation book, and it turns out she has another 14 book series called the Psy-Changling series
But if I understand the series synopsis is that this series takes place in world with shifters and feelings are regulated by the government? So I'm hmmmm on this one. I downloaded a sample to see how it goes

An Anthropology major, with a double minor in English Lit and Japanese. Arachnophobic, yet a doting tarantula mum. Never leaves home without her 14k gold cat ring and essential oil diffusing bracelet. Chronically anxious, sometimes mass hair loss occurs because of this. Watches dissection videos, devours nonfiction books, aspiring librarian/curator. Friendly introvert who frequently wears dark/bold lipsticks to strike fear into the hearts of man. Will she survive?
Something is staring back at you– but that’s not fair. It was watching you first, and you caught it looking, and you’ll be damned if you’re the first to blink. It has so very many eyes, one of them will have to giveway soon enough. You’re sure you have the advantage here.

How in the heckle do I keep a spider plant? I’m usually pretty decent with houseplants but this babe I have keeps browning, even the shoot coming out of it has browned.
It could be overwatering or underwatering? They also like a decent amount of sun! I actually haven’t kept a spider plant myself so I can’t be of tooo much help. My mom severely neglects hers and it still seems relatively ok lol. I would check the roots and see if it’s got any issues going on.

So, I wont beat around the bush, I am an awful writer. I think I'm decent at reading analysis and verbal discussion, but when it comes to writing I struggle. It's like I'm trying to squeeze blood from a rock. My profs tell me I'm thoughtful, insightful, and I have a strong writers voice, but that I struggle with basic expression. I've gone to get writing help with tutors on campus, but my writing just isn't improving. Do you have any tips from one English student to another?
Lucky for you, tutoring/teaching English essay writing is literally my job. My basic tips would be:
Go through my “academic writing” tag and see if anything jumps out to you.
Keep your sentence structures simple. If a big problem is your expression, then the best thing you can do is keep your sentences short. Try to stick to one subject + one verb + one object basics for the most part. (At least until this stops being a problem.)
Similarly, keep your word choice simple. Contrary to common belief, big words don’t automatically make your expression stronger.
P. E. E. Try to follow “Point. Example. Explanation.” structure. Make sure you provide an example for every point you make, and then make sure you explain it in your own words. That can often be a stumbling block for students trying to actually express their analysis.
PRACTICE. If you’ve been going to see tutors and you still don’t see a difference, then the best thing you can do is practice. I see the biggest changes in students who take this advice and do exercises on their own. Pick a passage you think would be interesting to analyze. Write a few paragraphs on it. Make up an essay question and give yourself an hour and a half to see what you can do with it. Take those practice essays to your tutors and see what new criticism they have. Ask them to pick your individual sentences apart or, if that’s against department policy, then find a friend or (preferably) a private tutor who would be willing to put that much work into your writing! Let them help you get better one sentence at a time.
Best of luck! Getting a hang of essay writing can be a long and frustrating process, but I promise it gets easier the more you do it. That your profs think you’re insightful and good at analysis is already a great starting point!

It has been 6 days since my daughter complained of a rancid odor wafting from the vents. I haven’t the heart to tell her that’s where mommy had gone.
