Oh dang, that’s actually a hard one!

Okay, first things first:

🧦 for a moodboard of Marigold Ashford’s sense of style

Sleek, chic and classic style at the street level. Marigold never goes into the boardroom without her stiletto pumps and a no-nonsense attitude. Going into the eighties, she began wearing thick makeup and heavy accessories to make it look like she was hiding her age out of vanity, rather than aging extremely slowly.

Marigold was very disappointed to learn she had missed eighties glam, mostly because she could have milked the HELL out of it.

In the moors and on the trails, Marigold trades her heels for deer-stalking boots or solid running shoes. Pre-infection, she was the jock of the family, and now has vast reserves of endurance & energy, so she likes to get her body moving.

And now:

ooooof. Lots to unpack here…

Abandonment and fear for the security of her family are this big ones at the foundation. Loss of control is the other one in a lot of ways- loss of autonomy, loss of self-determination, and losing the iron grip she has on her own emotional state. The “delicate condition” she finds herself in at the end of Book 2 hits on a lot of these all at once because once that’s a known thing, she’s going to be locked into a position by whoever controls the side she lands on.

As her abilities develop, Marigold finds that she can very easily deal serious physical and psychological damage to those who have been exposed to her via blood or saliva, via a paralimbic mutagenic property that renders them susceptible to her on an empathic level.

Following the death of her father, she placed herself as a shield between the company and her brother with his growing family, and the knifes edge balance between keeping them as at a safe distance keeping Umbrella at a safe distance, slowly learning the extent of Spencer’s corruption and drawing the key pieces toward her without alerting them to her abilities is a constant source of paranoia. Her abilities have also forced her to treat any intimacy as a dangerous weapon- she’s extremely gentle with the kids, but when you’re strong enough to bust through a concrete wall, one become very mindful of what or who is in one’s personal space.

The compromise she’s made there is to distance herself from knowledge of “the work” itself to maintain an image of being valuable, useful, but ultimately sweet and harmless. Following her capture in 1981, and subsequent escape/ re-capture by HCF in 1998, no one is buying that anymore.

Which leads into a fear of being used as a pawn in someone else’s game, specially against her own kin. It’s happened before. It’s threatening to happen again.
