Arranged Marriage

The last of the five little stores I did for @mlrarepairmonth! This one was also the most challenging of the group. It's Marikim, a pairing that does have some love here and there and I think also does work. Enjoy!

“Do you think that it will work out?”

Sabine was staring at the two kids playing; one being her daughter Marinette and the other being Lê Chiến Kim. Marinette was waving to him as Kim happily showed off trying to balance on the monkey bars. Her guest quietly sipped their tea as Sabine passed a note across the table.

“Yes, I have faith in these things. I'm sure that they will come to thank us when the time comes.”

Marinette was blindsighted. Of all the things her mother could have sprung on her eighteenth birthday, it had to be that there was some kind of arrangement for marriage. She didn't know who the guy was, not to mention what if she had different intentions on who she wanted for a future partner, and yes while she was single at the moment and really didn't have any current crushes who was to say that would change in the future-

“Ooomph.”

Her train of thought stopped as she ran into the front of Kim. That was her fault for sure, Marinette knew, as she hadn't been watching where she was going.

“Oh, sorry Kim, just a lot on my...mind?”

He was staring down at her, while holding up a small faded note in his hand. Marinette then had to think back to what her mother said this morning.

He is closer than you may think, and his mother revealed the arrangement last night. If he has any respect, he'll ensure he lets you know his intentions today. He'll be carrying a note of the agreement made.

Kim was slightly tied for words, and so was Marinette. Sure, they had been childhood friends and had grown up together, but they'd never seen each other in this kind of light. They'd joke about it, but dating? Or even an arranged marriage?

No. Not in a million years.

Right?

But something was tugging at the edges of Marinette's mind. Sure, they could both probably tell their respective parents to stuff it.

Maybe it was worth a try. Just to see.

It was an interesting proposal none the less.

“Now Kim. You don't have to ask to marry me right away. But maybe we could start with a date?”

Look I know that "pigtails" is a common nickname that Plagg gives Marinette in fics but I am co-opting it for Marikim purposes

Also I've never been kayaking so don't come at me about how inaccurate this is

"Hey, Pigtails, you okay?"

Marinette swatted Kim's hand away once more as he tried to pull on her pigtail, leaning forward as much as she could without throwing herself off balance. Had she known that he would insist on annoying her like this, she might have chosen to sit in the back of the kayak rather than the front, but she'd wanted to be able to see where they were going... God, why did she have to get paired with Kim of all people?

Still, they rowed on.

At least they seemed to be winning, no one else in the class had passed them yet. Because what would be the good of getting paired with Kim if he couldn't get them past the finish line first?

"Why are you so quiet?" he asked. "You're never quiet. You're, like, the loudest person in the class. You're louder than Alix and she's loud on purpose, you just don't seem to know how to be quiet."

Marinette huffed and turned to him once again. "Would you just shut up?"

He grinned. "Only if you make me."

Before he could lean in for a kiss and see how red her face was — hopefully she'd forgotten to put sunscreen on that morning so she could call it a sunburn — she turned to keep rowing.

Again, they paddled on, this time the silence lasting longer. Sunscreen or no, Marinette was beginning to overheat, even with splashing water on her face frequently. How much longer did they have to go?

"Can we rest?" she asked, picking up her paddle.

"Sure," Kim responded. "Hey, now that we're stopped, can you tell me why you mind being paired with me so much?"

She closed her eyes and tried to ignore the sting on her skin as she did so — she definitely had forgotten sunscreen, then, and now she understood why she never should have hoped for that. Her breaths came out heavy.

"I'm tired," she answered.

"Come onnnnn, Pigtails." His voice was now right in her ear, meaning he was leaning up to her from behind.

Marinette put her paddle back in the water and began to row, but she was met with friction, and she could only take the kayak in a circle. She turned to see that Kim had planted his own paddle in the water, assumedly all the way to the bottom of the river.

"Kim, can we please go?" she asked.

"Not until you tell me why."

She planted her own paddle in the mud of the river, attempting to scoot them out of place, if only to have something to do. Her hands strained against the paddle, the water causing them to slip, and Kim either had a stronger grip or deeper mud or something because the boat was not budging —

With a shriek, she let go of the paddle and fell to the other side of the kayak. Even with Kim's weight, it was enough to throw them both off balance, until water was filling Marinette's eyes and ears and she was screaming to get back up.

With a second more, she would have saved herself plenty well — the water wasn't that deep, after all. But she looked up to see Kim's chest, his arms cradled around her bridal style.

She glared when they met eyes, and he only smirked. "Hi, Pigtails."

Marinette kicked until he let go of her and immediately reached for her paddle and the now upside down kayak. Kim did the work of flipping it back over and bringing it to shore, holding it steady. She climbed in on her own, rejecting the hand he offered.

"Sorry, Pigtails," he said as they got back to the waters. "Didn't mean to flip you over."

Marinette only huffed in response, only looking forward. She couldn't get distracted, she couldn't let him know now... Not after what had happened...

A small sound came from behind her and she finally broke her gaze from where it'd been resting on the setting sun in the distance to look over her shoulder. Screaming and laughter and the sound of water splashing —

Alya and Nino were coming up on them quick.

"Hey!" Alya yelled. "How's it going!"

"Faster," Marinette said so that only Kim could hear, and she began paddling as furiously as she could. From the sound of his paddle, he was going too, but Alya and Nino were still gaining on them, propelled by how in sync they were and their momentum.

"You're looking pretty wet, girl!"

"Alya!"

"Sorry, didn't mean it like that!"

They were neck and neck now. Marinette looked over to see them, NIno leading, his arms going furiously but not nearly as furiously as Alya's. She looked back just in time to see a red flag coming into view in the distance.

"Let's go!" Kim called out. Both boats picked up even more. As one would gain the lead, the other would start going faster, again and again and again as that little red flag got closer and closer until —

"Sorry!" Alya called out. Marinette felt the kayak go off balance beneath her before she saw Alya's hand reach out to grab a strap on her life vest, pulling her sideways and off balance until —

She and Kim were in the water again.

By the time Marinette resurfaced — without Kim's help, this time — Alya and Nino had run the race, and Miss Bustier was wading over to them to help.

"Are you okay?" she asked.

"Oh, they are dead," Kim said, walking toward the finish line. He tried to squeeze past Marinette, but she stood in front of him.

"It's alright," she said, trying to meet his eyes for the first time that day. "It's all in good fun."

When he looked down at her, his face softened, and he smiled, only unlike his typical smirks, this one seemed like a reaction rather than an action.

"Alright," he said. "Let's dry off."

Just a Little Sick

Something’s wrong - Marinette hasn’t shown up to class yet. When Alya decides to visit her during lunch to find out what’s wrong, the whole class decides to see if they can make her feel better.

Notes:

This was originally requested by an anon - I didn’t feel comfortable using the trope they requested, so I shot for a similar one. I hope you enjoy anyway!

The second bell had only rang a minute ago, but there was unrest among Miss Bustier’s homeroom class as Alya tapped through her phone impatiently.

“Seats, everyone,” the teacher called. Glancing at Alya, she reprimanded, “Miss Cesaire, please put your phone away. It’s class time.”

“Sorry, Madame,” the girl sheepishly answered, slowly putting the phone in her jacket pocket, but Marinette isn’t here yet.”

“Madame Cheng told me that she would be absent today due to illness,” was all the answer she gave as she began to address the students.

Alya stared at the window, her mind racing as she began to tune the lesson out. Marinette was sick? She’d sounded perfectly fine the day before, and it was far from flu season...

The akuma from the night before flashed in her mind. What was their name...? Sick Surprise? Something related to cold and flu... perhaps her home had been in the way of the attack?

A nudge at her elbow made her flinch, but as she turned, Nino gave her a half-smile and held out a note under the table. Taking it, she scanned through it quickly: you can just go see her during lunch.

Ah, Nino always had the best ideas. She smiled warmly at her boyfriend and nodded, pocketing the note.

-----

“Hey, Alya, where are you going?” Adrien spoke up once the bell had rang. Several heads turned their way.

“I’m gonna go check up on Marinette,” she answered, adjusting her glasses. With a wink, she offered, “You wanna go with me? I’m taking Nino too.”

“I don’t see why not.” The blond smiled and made his way over to the two of them.

“If you’re making a trip, could you give her this?” Juleka spoke up shyly, holding out a folded slip of paper. “Rose made it.”

“You might as well give it to her in person,” Nino pointed out. “I bet she’d love it.”

“I don’t want to bother her,” the gothic girl trailed off, but Rose clasped her hands together.

“We wouldn’t be intruding, right?” She asked, bouncing on the balls of her feet.

“I’ll just ask her mom first.” Alya pulled out her phone and turned away.

One by one, more and more students started murmuring.

Nathanael, face pink, stepped up and shyly asked if he could come too. That made Alix ask, then Kim declared he was going if only to race Alix there, and dragged Max with him - one by one they decided to join the group, until Chloe and Sabrina were left.

Nino glanced over at Chloe. “You two staying here?”

“As if,” harrumphed the blonde. “If you think I’m gracing that dingy bakery with my fabulous presence, you need new glasses.”

Sabrina looked from Chloe to the group, then to Chloe again nervously. “Wherever Chloe goes, I go too!”

“Alright,” said the boy slowly. “Whatever you want, I guess.”

Alya finally turned around with a big smile, phone still in hand. “Good news, Madame Cheng said we can come over!”

It wasn’t that long of a walk over to the Dupain-Cheng residence, and one by one the students filed in much to the surprise of the patrons inside.

Mrs. Cheng looked up at the sound of the door, and a warm smile spread across her face. “Ah, Marinette’s classmates. Welcome - Alya, I’m sure you know where her room is?”

“Yep! We’ll be real quiet, I promise!” The girl nodded and gestured to the group. “C’mon.”

Adrien waved to the couple behind the counter before being herded up the stairs with everyone else.

“Okay. So Marinette’s room is right up here,” Alya gestured to the door. “I’m sure I don’t have to tell you not to touch anything that looks important - Chloe and Sabrina aren’t here, after all.”

A ripple of laughter went through the group as Alya knocked on the door.

A weak voice answered from within: “Yes?”

“Mari? Girl, it’s me,” she answered. “Can I come in? I brought some support.”

There was a moment of silence in the room, before there was a shuffling noise.

The door creaked open, and Marinette squinted through the crack. Her hair was loose and tousled, her face held a sickly pallor, and there were bags under her eyes.

The moment she saw Adrien smile back at her, she squeaked and shut the door.

“M- Marinette?” Nino called, concerned.

“Don’t come in yet!!” Came her frantic voice. There was a ruckus in the room - the sound of heavy footsteps and quiet bangs and creaking. “H- hang on!”

Finally after a minute of noise, it stilled - and Marinette fully opened the door with a strained smile, haphazardly-made pigtails, and a bathrobe. “Hi!”

“What’s going on in here, construction?” Kim joked as the students filed in. “Whoa, Mari - your room looks so much cooler now! Did you redecorate or something?”

“Something like that,” she answered shyly, patting down her flyaway hairs. “So, uh, what are you doing here?”

“Well, we heard from Madame Bustier that you were sick, so we decided to come help you feel better!” Adrien piped up.

“I was originally gonna come over by myself, but, well,” Alya gestured around. “You know.”

“Yeah,” the noirette laughed awkwardly. “Sorry, I forgot to text you - I just had a rough night last night, I guess.”

(Rough night was an understatement, she mused to herself with a wince. She was certain she still had an ugly bruise across the middle of her back, and the constant stomach rumblings were enough to make her want to crawl into a hole and stay there.)

“Did the akuma terrorize you too?” Juleka commiserated with a frown. “I couldn’t sleep last night - Luka kept pacing the boat and the noise kept me up.”

“Yeah, it got really close to the bakery,” she admitted. “I don’t know how my parents slept through it, but apparently either they did or they’re too used to short nights for it to make a difference.”

Alya opened her mouth to say something, but Marinette’s stomach rumbled loudly - and the girl grew more pale.

“You okay?” Ivan spoke up in concern.

“I- I’m fine!” Marinette waved it off. “Just-- Ihavetoberightbackstayhereokay!”

She sprinted out of the room, her feet skidding slightly on the floor before a door slammed down the hall.

Silence hung around the room for a minute.

“Well,” Alix started, “that was weird.”

Alya’s phone vibrated in her pocket, and when she fished it out she frowned at a text from Marinette: Accidentally put regular milk in my coffee last night - please don’t tell anyone!!

Her mouth formed an ‘o’. So that was what that was. Marinette was having stomach problems.

Putting the phone back in her pocket, she listened to the chatter from the others until Marinette staggered back into the room, looking more exhausted and smelling sweet. Probably Febreeze.

“Sorry, ha... ha...” she weakly gave a thumbs-up. “Just a little... sick, today.”

“We shouldn’t have come and disturbed you,” Rose fretted, taking Marinette’s hands in hers. “I’m sorry, Mari. You need to get back into bed and rest!”

“I’ll be fine! ... eventually,” she chortled. “Just... not. right now.”

“No, Rose is right. You need sleep more than anything. And medicine.” Alya raised her brows at her friend. “Go on, get back up there. I’m not leaving until you do.”

“Here, lemme help,” Kim said. Before Marinette could say anything in protest, he swept her up and laughed at her squeak of surprise.

“Dark Cupid is back, I see!” Alix laughed, pointing at the boy.

“You’re just jealous you can’t carry Marinette,” he teased back, sticking out his tongue.

Marinette’s face burned brightly as she clung to Kim’s jacket with shaky hands.

“If Mari wasn’t such a sucker for,” Alya glanced Adrien’s way as she whispered to Nino, “Buttercup, I think he’d have some fierce competition for Kim.”

“I dunno, he did have that crush on Chloe at the beginning of the year,” the boy mused. “He’s not the best judge of girls.”

“Yeah, and I guess you are,” she teased, nudging him in the side. “You got me.”

He laughed, leaning in closer.

“Mission accomplished!” Kim called from the upper level. “Operation Get Marinette Back to Bed is clear!”

“Oh,” Juleka remembered, pulling out the note. “Wait, Marinette, I’m leaving this on your chaise, okay?”

“Sure,” came the answer from above as Kim made his way back down the stairs. “Just... leave anything you want there. I’ll look at it later!”

Nathanael glanced up before hesitating, and placed a card down - a thank-you gift, courtesy of him and Marc.

Once there were a small pile of notes on the chaise lounge, Alya smiled and called up, “We’ve gotta get back to school, lunch is ending - I’ll stop by after classes!”

“Okay!”

“C’mon, let’s get going,” Nino urged.

One by one the group left, wishing the girl well and giving goodbyes - until Alya and Adrien were left.

“You wanna say goodbye?” She gestured towards the stairs.

“Yeah, sure,” the blond answered. “Will you tell the others not to wait up?”

Is it happening? Is today the day?! She wondered excitedly. She winked at him and nodded. “Knock yourself out, but don’t do anything rash!”

“I wouldn’t dream of it,” Adrien chuckled. “We’re friends, right?”

...Of course it isn’t happening. Alya could only barely conceal her sigh. Honestly, I don’t think Marinette would say yes anyway - not while she’s sick.

“Yeah, you’re friends,” she answered instead, turning to leave. “We’ll see you back in class, Sunshine.”

-WHY ARE THEY SO CUTE!?

-Umm Marinette? You okay?

-Have some cereal with your milk.

-Yea something is up with Marinette.

-Marinette's bike is cool.

-Okay adrinette hand holding is cute. But something seems wrong here

-Okay so she reacted seeing an image of Kim... okay weird.

-Okay ... Marinette is having a panic attack. That feels a bit too real

-Bugs! Locker full of bugs. But what does it have to do with...

-Marinette freaked out hard. and Kim says thats her normal reaction to pranks... Kim? What the fuck?! What did you do?

-Of COURSE the akuma shows up now

-"Panic" Oh damn thats a good name for an akuma. But I know Marinette would never get akumatized (especially at this point) But I really want some art interpretations of that form

-So Marinette is having a flashback while Monarch be trying to work on akumatization... How does that work?

-Okay so Marinette had a crush on Kim in 8th grade... Wow someone somewhere owes Lunian some money.

-Marinette with her hair down! Not a drill. Flashbacks matter

-At least Juleka, Rose and Mylene talked to Marinette and were kind

-Kim actually offered his swim trunks to her. Well that is kind of sweet in a himbo way.

-Chloé really just decided to hate on Marinette.

-Damn Socqueline! You defend Marinette. Maybe thats why Marinette wears her hair like that.

-So Socqueline is a year older confirmed. And it does explain the deeper lore about her knowing her mom.

-Tonto. Hehehehehehe

-For a change? So the implication is that Marinette has crushes before. Makes sense. Marinette at this point seems like the type to develop crushes on anyone nice to her.

-Kim doesnt really get when Pranks are pranks and Pranks are... well TOO far. OMG he is the "Its just a prank Bro" type

-Sabrina was watching.... oh this can only end poorly

-Oh... oh no. No no no no no no no.

-Kim you are really an idiot. And not in the endearing himbo way.

-Marinette didnt have a plan back then... Oh! This is gonna result in a trauma where she needs to... Oh wow this is gonna be traumatic af.

-Socqueline is like a big sister to her. Poor thing already can see this going poorly

-This looks like an adorable time. The marikim looks adorable, yet all I can think about is how Chloe will ruin it.

-Oh no, Kim. Please dont do this.

-IT HAD BUGS IN IT! KIM! KIM!!! IN WHAT WORLD DID YOU THINK THIS WAS AN OKAY PRANK?! THAT WAS 8 TYPES OF FUCKED UP. I DONT CARE HOW CONVINCING CHLOÉ IS. YOU ABSOLUTE GARBAGE MEATHEAD!!

-Welp... Chloé has done some f***ed up things. But Wow. This really is her at her worst. Like damn. That is just... And here I thought Lila was bad.

-So Astruc, you really needed to drive the point home on why you hate chloé. You REALLY drove it home. But really

-Socqueline Out here for the save! At the very least saving Marinette from ABSOLUTE eternal shame. Put some respect on this character that only appeared this season.

-Kim REALLY doesnt get how f***ed that was. Its a sad day when a Himbo is more dumb than kind. That just make him an idiot.

-Marinette needs a hug.

-So this explains everything about Why Marinette knows absolutely everything about adrien early on. Well except for the fact he is chat noir. But yea. It was actually TRAUMA!

-"And that he is not friends with Chloé." Yea Adrien, buddy. You might want to completely burn that bridge now. Side note, this completely contextualizes Origins and why Marinette assumed the worst about Adrien off the bat. Damn. This was deep. A little exposition heavy... but deep

-And Chloé gets Socqueline because she broke her phone. Well Damocles. You are officially s*** in my eyes. Even Darker owl seems less slay to me. YOU RUINED DARKOWL FOR ME YOU BASTARD

-She got suspended for two weeks. That sucks

-Wow, so was that flashback instant? Or was Monarch just patiently watching that flashback ENGROSSED by it?

-She broke free by working through the source of her trauma in a matter of seconds... Okay.

-Oh damn! Ondine and Adrien look ready to throw hands at Kim. And Justifiably so.

-Kim... You done goofed. You really are an idiot and My opinion of you is trash.

-Adrien going full arthur anger meme. PUNCH HIM ADRIEN. PUNCH HIM IN THE FACE

-Dude doesnt even swim with his goggles.

-Monarch really said "If I gotta settle, I can at least spin it to make it sound better than it is."

-Dark Humor, Hehe instead of Dark cupid. Clever. Cause his sense of humor is dark. Also CHAT NOIR HAS A REASON TO PUNCH HIM IN THE FACE.

-Its twisted that he gets his old power

-Also... was he wearing that in the pool? That thing is waterproof? Neat.

-I like the updated costume. But I hate kim right now

-Adrien is ready to throw hands.

-Chat noir wants to beat Kim's ass today. SLAY KITTY SLAY

-YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Chat noir giving Dark Humor the Two Piece No Biscuit.

-He gonna cataclysm him! oh sh*t. Chat noir really felt regret about accidentally cataclysming Monarch, but now ready to erase kim. Yea I completely understand. Valid.

-Ladybug understably needed to stop him... But that caused him to get hit with the goofy arrow. Damn

-Ladybug had to detransform and retransform quick. Tikki really sped ate her cookie today.

-She got jokes

-And Ladybug's plan faked him out and now he got a toilet on his head

-Ladybug may also be using this as a chance to work stuff out.

-The ladynoir is cute. But Chat noir was still 100% justified in his beating of dark humor... Except the cataclysm. But I get why he was ready to use it.

-Well at least Kim is owning up to his s***. He is still an idiot. But He is a himbo. But yea, still a dick move early on Kim. Path to redemption Kim. (still forgave him too quickly.) But Ondine will beat his ass if he doesnt stick to it.

-This Adrinette is adorable and sweet and understanding.

-Trauma is still there. Guess she isnt completely over it, which is understandable. It will take some time (or like 3 episodes)

-Adrien went to chloé. Oh damn. You go boy

So I have a LOT of thoughts on this.

For one, Every adult in miraculous is an idiot. Sabine, its good you has Socqueline there to help... but that doesnt really mean s***. This is where you work with the school to have her change classes, or even schools. 3 years of that treatment is enough.

Also, Damocles. You gutless coward. Even if it did cost you your job. The fact you let yourself get controlled to let your STUDENTS suffer is gross.

And Kim... Kim you are an idiot. The fact that you didnt even think that a prank like that was too far?! Adrien was more than justified in a cataclysm. But you did apologize and promised to THINK about the consequences. Plus you are a kid. I can forgive. But THIN ICE MY GUY

Chloé, yea season 2 and Season 3 chloé might as well be a completely different character than this chloé. Zoe appeared after harnessing any decency Chloé has left. But yea, I dont care for this chloé. Not gonna defend this chloé.

So this does explain a LOT about Marinette's more cautious personality. But it also doesnt make sense in a way that Marinette didnt really think things through before. Because if thats the case... then the thing that made her a good ladybug was because of a crippling trauma?! I feel like this maybe should have fleshed out younger marinette more.

Socqueline really was like an older sister to Marinette, but sadly it feels like her inclusion without mention before makes this feel like this traumatic event wasnt planned from the get go as the reason Marinette is how she is. Also after what happened to Socqueline. How could Tom and Sabine allow Marinette to go to that school again?! Seriously. Especially after KNOWING Chloé would be in Marinette's class in origins.

Side note, Adrien was 100% perfect this episode. Loved him. Ondine too. I do wish Civilian adrien did get ONE punch on Kim tho. Just one.

Chat noir laying a beating though was great.

Right, so even though I enjoyed the episode to an extent... I cant say it leaves the show in a better place. If anything, I think it leaves things much worse off.
