what would some pjo characters listen to?
thalia, luke, annabeth, percy, grover, clarisse, stoll bros edition
Thalia's music taste is canon; she listens to Green Day. I'd like to think she is fond of many rock bands like Radiohead, Nirvana, Rage Against The Machine... her playlist is a rock/punk soup. She may even go and listen to The Cure, Slipknot and all those bands with a certain aesthetic that is linked to an alternative style/community.
One thing about Thalia, though, is that she won't stand music that isn't alt. Lana del Rey, Billie Eilish, Dua Lipa, Taylor Swift are just examples of what she really can't get into. She despises entering a shop in a mall and hearing the "daaaaaance, dance the night away!" no. Please no. If you think Thalia listens to Taylor Swift in secret, I disagree.
I made a post about Luke's music taste before. I like the headcanon that in the Hermes cabin everyone listens to any song, any language, any genre (their shared playlist has over 3k songs, and most of them don't even correlate; special thanks to the Stolls). Luke likes punk and rock too, but maybe not overwhelmingly noisy... The Clash is probably a band he really likes, he also likes more current rock from bands like Los Campesinos... that's a little calmer than Thalia. He already has too much noise around him anyway.
Related to noise, Luke likes good, funky beats (Ivan Meets G.I Joe by The Clash starts playing). It is possible he listens to glitchore and/or scene songs!
Luke would listen to TV Girl.
Annabeth had most of her music taste influenced by Luke and Thalia, she was 7 when she came to camp afterall. Probably her own dad wasn't a parent that would show music to their child all the time. So, yes, Thalia and Luke music taste, mostly.
A thing's for sure, she doesn't understand Luke's liking towards glitchcore songs. Annabeth thinks they are... messy, like they were made immediatly and the lyrics aren't even audible. As an Athena kid who likes music, she often analyzes songs.
I can imagine Annabeth liking The Pixies, Iggy Pop, Ramones, and (she says that it's just sometimes, but their whole playlist is plagued by...) Blondie. Add The Runaways and Joan Jett too, this girl is a bisexual.
I'd like to think Percy isn't really judgemental about music. Does he find a reasoning in the lyrics? Nah. Who cares. Does he think the music is sad or happy? Depends on how fast it is, lyrics are to be listened; not read.
Sally is a really cool mom, and she probably introduced him to many things (I headcanon watching Drag race is one of them). A hint of jazz, some old-school rock punk, The Smiths, The Beatles, David Bowie, Abba... ultimate playlist. Percy probably still listens to many of these artists' songs.
But Percy's personal taste? Hip-hop. The hip-hop you could hear in a skatepark, or just 90s, it's almost the same thing. Eminem, Skee-lo, Ice Cube... he probably downloads playlist full of 90s songs.
Grover likes calming songs. Laufey is probably his favorite artist. Dominic Fike, Mac DeMarco's songs are also in his playlists. He doesn't mind catching up to some popular artists like these, but it's true that he only listens to music when he has nothing to do, not even go and search for Percy.
He can step out of his musical comfort-zone, but he can't listen to heavy metal. Thalia's playlist really scares him, can't even have it saved in his library. Grover needs relaxing music. Gods, he would listen to white noise, rain sounds or whatever's chill.
Clarisse thinks listening to music is a waste of time. She's not really a playlist grinder. But it is true some of her half-siblings tried to introduce stuff to her, it being: Måneskin, Hole, Marina (that one is a very guilty liking of her).
Clarisse doesn't think of listening to music when being alone and with no tasks, she just goes and does something. The fact that you can multitask, do something productive and listen to music at the same time, does not really enter into her perception of productivity.
Expect her to be judgemental of songs people who aren't her siblings show to her.
The Stoll brothers are constantly, forever in a music fight. Both of them have a very wide taste... but between both of them there are big differences.
Travis would listen to Taylor Swift, Mars Argo, Good kid, The Cardigans, Tyler The Creator. Pop, pretty much summarized, and some of its subtypes too.
Connor would be the reason of why the Hermes cabin listens to tons of songs in different languages (hc mentioned in Luke section). Brazilian phonk? Of course. Russian indie bands?? Yes! Argentinian rock??? Yasss. Everything goes into his playlist. Connor probably trusts Spotify's Discover Weekly BLINDLY.
This dramatic difference between their tastes made them not talk about music, because it would probably end up with both of them trying to prove the other wrong. They are very good siblings! It's just that... well... Connor thinks Travis' taste is shit. And Travis thinks Connor's make no sense at all (he can't even understand what they are saying!) But well, they can't look almost the same and have a similar music taste; that would be too much. Siblings can have many things in common, and things that make you want to make the other to cancel their Spotify subscription. It works like that.
I took 1 hour to write this.

OFF THE HOOK VERSES.. NINTENDO OF AMERICA!
Tumblr media
purposefully dramatic title to begin this post, i am in that kind of mood. i'm going to be talking about, as you can see, how translations handled {..butchered} pearl and marina.
i'm going to preface this by saying i know WHY this is the way it is. the communications between NOJ and NOA were not there for the most part, and also the fact that nintendo is as huge of a corporation as it is, {.. also the fact they're a company IN GENERAL} it can be and IS unethical in some practices. my anger towards their characterization isn't directed towards the employees, as they just did what they could!
now that i've made this clear, let's get started.. everything from this point on is under the cut. hang tight, it's a long one.
the main way these two are different lies in the ways they interact with each other. if you've played the english version, of course you're going to be used to the unserious bullying dynamic they have.
Tumblr media
here's an example. {manta maria stage announcement dialogue.}
however, in the original japanese text, it isn't like this. this especially shows within marina.. though i wouldn't say she's exactly mean in english, she's positively a bit more smug in the comments she would make towards pearl. i'm specifically referring to her here as the contrast in her personality is very noticeable, here's an example. these exchanges were from the mayo vs ketchup splatfest, first beginning with the english version.
🦑 "it's the glorious union of eggs and oil-- MAYONNAISE!"
🐙 "versus the red stuff that runs through my veins -- KETCHUP!"
🦑 "pshh. ketchup is BOOOORING. it's like the sheldon of condiments."
🐙 "boring? at least ketchup has flavor. mayonnaise is just tasteless lard!"
now the original..
🦑 "the opponents are: mild and creamy! the alluring oily condiment "mayonnaise!" and.."
🐙 "a collaboration of sweetness and sourness! the way it spreads throughout the mouth, it's the refreshing "ketchup!"
see how different that is? this was only the theme announcement, but even just in that small bit of text, you can get an idea of the shift.
now, with this, vague hints of joke bullying are somewhat there however it's worded in a much kinder way by marina. something that must be said is that marina originally is sickeningly sweet, and is always polite. she speaks in a very formal and gentle manner, she's also quite respectful and that especially shows with pearl. going back to the vague playful jokes, here's a comparison of dialogue remaining similar, but being worded in a much gentler fashion.
Tumblr media
in direct comparison to the translated bit, which was above.
{also dialogue announcing the manta maria is currently in-rotation.}
marina has also seemed to be protective of pearl, sometimes worrying for her wellbeing.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
as you can see, she worries about pearl potentially falling off the tower in blackbelly skatepark instead of thinking of her turntables. though this protectiveness is lightly hinted at in english, {marina commenting that she will "protect her precious pearlie at all costs" with her brella} it's more apparent here, don't you think?
Tumblr media
this sturgeon shipyard conversation follows similarly to how it does in japanese, except marina exclaims to pearl that it's dangerous to start singing so suddenly. i can almost guarantee this is because of the pure destructive power of pearl's voice! the english translation hints at that same reasoning, but oddly enough? it's never outright said that her voice actually can destroy things, which was an interesting choice.
one more example before we move on. while it's a small detail, i feel it's worth mentioning. sometimes in their exchanges, pearl will speak of an idea or something similar to the text above, and marina will tell her to save it or to not do that now. meanwhile, in japanese, marina is more encouraging to comments pearl would make.
Tumblr media
verses.. {more from blackbelly skatepark.}
Tumblr media
these are far from the only examples of this, but i'll keep it to these for now. i may make a future post talking more about this.
you may have noticed..
the ways they speak to each other in english are very similar to the interactions between the squid sisters. {in case you wondered, callie and marie aren't any different across either versions. the same old 'sibling' bullying.} while interesting, it makes sense. as i stated much earlier, the communications between NOA and NOJ were not prioritized as much in splatoon two, which isn't the fault of the translators themselves. they used a dynamic with them that they were familiar with, as they seemingly had nothing else to go off of.. it's a very nuanced subject. i very heavily dislike the localizations, but i understand why it's been done in this way.
example, i do not like a vast majority of the way the octo expansion was handled.
this is a whole other can of worms, due to the fact that even beyond off the hook, things got kind of weird within it. if you're curious as to what is different, please take some time to watch the octo expansion retranslated mod, by ardnin with help by rassicas!
youtube
it's a wonderfully done mod that is about ten times more faithful to the original expansion LMAO. the chat logs also feel a ton more natural.
Tumblr media
more examples of incredibly out of character dialogue are absolute GEMS such as these. {specifically this one above made me so mad the other day i could have charged a special.}
Tumblr media
i hate almost every line of dialogue that came from fork vs spoon. that fest was a mistake, i die on this hill.
but anyways, that's about it.
if you read this whole thing, thank you. this subject is something i am very passionate about, and i'm glad i can share it. reblogs are always appreciated, i hope this taught you something new about these two. class dismissed.

Cleveland Centre Historic District
James and Riverbed Sts.
Cleveland, OH
The Cleveland Centre Historic District is a historic district in Cleveland, Ohio, that is roughly bounded by James and Riverbed Sts. and the Cuyahoga River and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.  It includes the neighborhood of Center Street from the Fall Street junction with the Detroit-Superior High Level Bridge.
     As the Ohio-Erie Canal, built between 1828 and 1832, was nearing completion, many in Cleveland caught "canal fever" and began to believe that their town was so strategically situated on the Great Lakes and along the new canal that it was destined to become an important world trade center. One man who invested in that belief was James S. Clarke, the former Sheriff of Cuyahoga County and, in the decade of the 1830s, one of the biggest real estate speculators in Cleveland. He platted a development on what was then known as Case's Point in1833 called "Cleveland Centre," which featured streets named after foreign countries—British, French, German, China and Russia—radiating from a hub called Gravity Place  The development proposal for Case's Point in the Flats was intended one day to become the center of all Cleveland business and trade.
     Cleveland Centre, which was annexed to Cleveland in 1835, did not become a center of international trade and business. Instead, it was the Cleveland, Columbus and Cincinnati Railroad (CC&C), rather than international trade merchants, that arrived in Cleveland Centre.  The arrival of railroads here and elsewhere in Cleveland in this era coincided with the city's early industrial development, and in the years that followed a number of industrial buildings went up at Cleveland Centre, on or near the tracks of the railroad.  The name "Cleveland Centre" itself lost its cachet sometime in the late nineteenth century as the place became better known as just part of the industrial Flats.
     When Cleveland experienced de-industrialization in the mid-twentieth century, Cleveland Centre, like the rest of the Flats, languished for several decades as a place of mostly closed factories and empty warehouses. That began to turn around in the decade of the 1970s when the Flats experienced rebirth as a city entertainment district. Cleveland Centre was not, in the early years of this rebirth, home to many of the entertainment venues, which tended to locate to the north, closer to the lake. However, in the early twenty-first century, a number of acres in the southern part of the Centre, formerly owned by the CC&C Railroad and its successors, were re-purposed for recreational use and became home to the Commodore's Club Marina, the Cleveland Rowing Foundation, and Cleveland Metroparks' Rivergate Park, which featured a skatepark and a riverside restaurant called Merwin's Wharf.
     In late 2013, Canalway Partners worked with the Downtown Cleveland Alliance and Historic Warehouse District to contribute funds to a study that led to the creation of the Cleveland Centre National Register Historic District, located in Downtown Cleveland’s Flats. This designation promotes development by opening funding opportunities through historic tax credits and easements.  The historic district was added to the National Register of Historic Places on January 22, 2014.  In December 2014, the first project in the Cleveland Centre received just over $209,000 in State Historic Tax Credits. The project at 1736 Columbus Road will become offices for the architecture firm Fabo Enterprises, Inc.  With Cleveland Centre becoming a trendy place once again, Dan Rothenfeld, a local artist, taking it all in proposed in 2016 that historic markers be placed there and that the original radial streets and hub at Gravity Place be lighted so that both on the ground and from the air people could remember and commemorate this early era attempt to build an international trade center in the Flats.
