Close encounters!
My beautiful koi betta Bisby has had a jumping spider neighbor taking advantage of her tank light to hunt bugs under for some time, and recently they met face to face! Very happy to capture each of them acknowledging the other - and Bisby's quick look back at me as if to say "you're seeing this too right?!" 🧡
Edit ✨️ For all those concerned, yes, she does have a lid! I'd just cleaned and was hanging out right there where I filmed from at my office desk. If you are new to fish keeping, please invest in a good lid or when picking setups, favor tank kits that include one!

attended a scientific conference today I was most excited for this lecture by Maria Pavlovska about how we can restore marine ecosystems in the aftermath of the ongoing war in Ukraine, especially after the ecocidal destruction of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant.  fun fact: I grew up near the river shown on the third photo.

Ok so scientists of Tumblr. Is it worth it to make a professional science Twitter? My current PI suggested I do to find opportunities but Twitter is Twitter and I don't want to touch it with a 10 foot poll. But, I am lacking in marine science opportunities and absolutely need to network.
So, strangers on the internet what's your opinion. Is science Twitter worth it?

A friend put it on her head saying it was a crown and my professor freaked out. So you're saying you can't use a real shark jaw as a crown?

Oceanic manta rays are the largest species of ray in the world, with a wingspan of up to 26 feet. Despite their immense size, they are completely harmless to divers - they have no barbs to speak of, unlike stingrays, and spend their time filtering the water for plankton with the help of their cephalic lobes (the big paddles on each side of their mouths). Socorran mantas have grown very used to divers, and often seek out our bubble curtains seemingly because they feel good and may help clear away parasites!

Today I:
Attended marine biodiversity lecture
Studied for upcoming environmental toxicology course
Practiced French and Spanish
Reviewed lecture on annelids
Submitted transcripts
Worked on Healing with the Arts project
I always feel more creative in fall! I’ve recently taken up knitting again, and I’m SO excited to have finished a fluffy blue-grey scarf for my aunt. The next knitting project: a blanket. We shall see how this goes.

Octopuses are usually solitary, but the gloomy octopus Octopus tetricus live in very high densities. Perhaps due to this living arrangement, scientists have captured footage of octopuses throwing stuff at each other, everything from silt to shells to algae. A few evidence to suggest this throwing is deliberate (not just octopus coincidentally flinging something in the direction of another octopus):
Throwing requires an unusual positioning of the siphon (think jet water propulsion device)
The things that get thrown make pretty strong contact with the receiving octopus
Throwers often exhibit uniform dark/medium colour, suggesting that these throws are linked in some way (not random throw events)
Octopus in the receiving end have been shown to try and dodge the missile
Choice of missile is often silt, and not random
Throwing is often done using a specific set of arms
Scientists think it might be some sort of communication. But it's not clear what sort, e.g. whether antagonistic or not, or is it play, enrichment etc.
