So, someone has been Lurking a round the Shadow and Bone fandom - mostly inspired by the fabulously talented @orlissa’s and @jomiddlemarch ‘s glorious fics, which give a GREAT nod to a more historically grounded Grishaverse. And... I do keep going to Pinterest and staring at pretty gowns, (coincidentally in shades of gold and black)... so...
Oh, what the hell. I make no apologies, people. This mad historical fashion dump is my ‘give Alina ALL the imposing gowns and elegant outfits’ -and possibly a shadowmancer husband post...
A Radiant Ballgown - Literally!
Tumblr media
First off, I COULDN’T pass up this gown! It was designed by Charles Frederick Worth for an 1883 fancy dress ball in New York for one of the Vanderbilts, who appeared as the personification of “Electric Light”.
This was a very cutting edge costume for the time. The dress even came equipped with a battery to power an electric torch carried in one hand.
(But who needs batteries when you’re a Grisha Sun Summoner?)
It’s a glorious combination of butter yellow and white silk, with hints of lustrous black velvet at the hem. The spangled gold embroidery all over the gown would glitter under strong light - which is just PERFECT for a Sun Summoner to wear whilst demonstrating her powers. It’s also no bad outfit to wear if you have Unresolved Sexual Tension with your shadowy nemesis whilst dancing in the midst of a decadent Lentsov masquerade ball. This gown sort of begs for that kind of high-melodrama!
Keftas Galore...
Now, I don’t know whether I’m subconscious channelling some ‘last days of the Romanovs/Anastasia’ vibes when I think about keftas for Alina...
Tumblr media
(Not ... quite what I’m going for)
but... I ended up looking at Paul Poiret Edwardian evening coats for inspiration, and oh my goodness, the sheer luxurious drama of them all!
Tumblr media
Grisha keftas... because they’re worth it. (The one on the right feels very ‘Decadent Tango with the Darkling’ to me)
Tumblr media
I mean, if you’re going to have to rule as a benevolent dictator with your shadowmancer husband after overthrowing a corrupt regime in order to protect Grishakind and Ravka, you might as well look amazing while doing it, right? In colours which show how you “balance” each other out...
Tumblr media
The gorgeous yellow velvet robe on the right looks like maybe the costume designer from Shadow and Bone used it as inspiration for Alina’s gold kefta? either way, the black appliqué is GORGEOUS. And I would wear it in a heartbeat.
Plus, if you couple them with the breathtaking Mario Fortuny gowns of the late teens/early 20s, it gives a gorgeous look that very much plays into the ‘Sankta Alina’ image...
Tumblr media
They come in gold and black, for choosing your look: ‘Sun Summoner’ or ‘Dark Bride of the Starless Saint’.
Tumblr media
I have to admit, my shipping brain chose these last couple of fluttery dressing gowns for the fact they would be very tactical for persuading Aleksander to stop working on his battle strategies and come to bed.
I’m sorry. i’m trash.
A massive, massive thank you to all the wonderful fic writers out there!

History of kaftans
Kaftan is one of the most flattering and alluring garments till date that offer seamless comfort along with style. Trending Kaftans have been a part of the fashion industry since 14th Century. Since then, it has continued to offer elegant style and seamless comfort. While currently it has been worn by a majority of the population on various occasions, some still need little clarification regarding what stylish benefits this garment offers. Although, the kaftan is a prevalent term in the fashion world, however, its deep insights are still unclear to some. Having the right information about the kaftan fabric, styling tips and accessorising can help you stand out from the crowd. In this blog, we break its definition down for you to understand what this garment offers and how you can bring the best out of it.
Tumblr media
History of kaftan
Kaftans have represented royalty since the time of the Ottoman Empire. The luxurious fashion garment was prevalent across the Middle East, parts of Africa and Russia as well. During that time, Ottoman styled kaftans were made using exotic fabrics and grand embellishments depicting individuality and unique craftsmanship. Back then, kaftans were a symbol of comfort and style, although, nothing has changed since then.
Starting at the turn of the 20th century, Kaftans slowly seeped into Western fashion over the course of several decades. Drawing inspiration from Middle Eastern and North African cultures, early 20th-century designers like Paul Poiret and Mario Fortuny began creating kaftan-like dresses and robes for women. Considered avant-garde and innovative, such garments were a far cry from the form-fitting, corseted styles that had long dominated Western fashion. The new looks didn’t quite stick, but they paved the way for a more liberated style, one that moved away from restrictive garments and embraced baggy, curve-less silhouettes (later embodied by 1920s flappers).
Tumblr media
Origin of kaftan
Kaftans are not associated with any single origin. Whether it is Japanese Kimono or West African boubou, similar tunic-like designs have been seen all over the world in various cultures. Although, the specific kaftans that are styled in the current era was most probably originated in Mesopotamia, which includes present day Syria, Turkey, and Iraq. From the 12th right up until the early 20th century, Ottoman sultans wore sumptuous kaftans made with expensive fabrics as a way to display their power and rank. In a gesture of political prowess, sultans also gifted fine kaftans to important generals and guests. Kaftans eventually made their way to Morocco and North Africa, where they became a staple garment in traditional dress.
Following the cinched-waist styles of the 1940s and 1950s, kaftans didn’t truly take off in the U.S. until the early 1960s. It was then that stylish Vogue editor, Diana Vreeland, took a trip to Morocco and found herself dazzled by the local kaftans. She began wearing colorful kaftans around the office and wrote in Vogue that they were the “the most becoming fashion ever invented.” By 1966, the magazine had run a number of editorials featuring the piece and prominent designers like Emilio Pucci, Yves Saint Lauren, and Oscar de la Renta were designing their own kaftans for the runways. Meanwhile, the garment was a hit among celebrities (most notably Elizabeth Taylor).
Embraced as much by rich socialites as free-loving hippies, kaftans experienced a veritable boon: their bold prints and free-flowing design played well into the era’s “ethnic” trends.
Back in the 1970s, kaftans were popularised for their seamless comfort, colourful prints, and appeal. Kaftan, a full-length robe-style garment comes with sweeping and voluminous sleeves, making it the most sought-after choice back then for those seeking for glamorous look along with comfort. But in the past decade, we’ve seen yet another resurgence of the kaftan. As recently as 2014, designers such as Stella McCartney, Gucci, and Roberto Cavalli began featuring kaftans and tunic dresses in their collections, while celebrities like Kristina Hendricks extolled their comfort and versatility. To this day, kaftans continue to be a go-to favorite during the warm months, favored for their comfort and chic ease.
Tumblr media
From the lustrous houses of sultans all the way to the runway, the kaftan has a rich legacy that makes it more than passing fad. Try it for yourself! Visit Shoptrend to check out a wide variety of gorgeous kaftans.

Rima Dadenji, matrice: pencil and ink on waxed canvas, my personal impressions and details from “Fortuny, un Espagnol à Venise” (Fortuny, a Spaniard in Venice) exhibition, private view, at the Palais Galliera, Paris, 2017. I love Mariano Fortuny’s work for various reasons, I’ll quickly jot down a few: Mariano Fortuny y Madrazo (1871-1949) was born in Granada, Spain (Allah gave me the tangible miracle I’ve been waiting, striving for, all my life, in Granada), his father, the Catalan painter Mariano Fortuny y Marsal (1838-1874), died when Mariano was three years old, the family then moved to Paris and later settled in Venice in 1888 (I’ve lived in Lido di Venezia and know the laguna by heart). Mariano Fortuny started out as a painter, then worked as a photographer, a furniture and lighting designer, a theatre and opera scenographer, a costume designer, before focusing on textile and fabrics and inventing new methods of textile dyeing and of printing processes onto fabrics (he was basically researching light). He was inspired by Minoan culture (I love Crete!), Japan (I love Japan!), and Islamic and Arab design. Palais Galliera completely omits the Islamic and Arab influences and changes it to Byzantine and Persian in their booklet although there are djellabas, abayas and burnous by Mario Fortuny exhibited within their retrospective - this intellectual dishonesty is very characteristic of the museum-curating industry in France. Not only was Mario Fortuny born in Granada, where their family house was filled with Hispano-Arab design, pottery, metalwork and armoury, and he often depicted Arabs in his paintings (see for example Arab chief) but Venice, at that time, had a long tradition of trade with Al Andalus and the Ottoman Empire — Mario Fortuny had extensive exposure to Muslim and Arab fashion and design in Venice as well. In fact Venetian architecture is very influenced by Islamic architecture. I studied a full semester in Venice (fall and winter and then I graduated there) and I still remember whenever the laguna was covered with fog, I’d get this instant visual illusion, like a mirage, that I was approaching Istanbul whilst on the traghetto, same in Piazza San Marco I’d get visual flashbacks of the Ottoman porticos around the holy Kaa’ba in Mecca. You browse any publication/documentation on Mario Fortuny in Spanish and in Italian (and perhaps even in English but I haven’t had the time to check) and you can read how of all non-Western cultures, the one Mario Fortuny appreciated the most was the Islamo-Arabic —it’s quite obvious when you view his entire oeuvre. He created textiles with Islamic Arabic calligraphy, like how demented must one be to willingly lie and erase this knowledge in a curated retrospective and therefore humiliate themselves (I’m fully using ‘demented’ here in its old Latin meaning). This erasure is appalling but not surprising, it’s actually the ‘default’ in any exhibition and publication related to Islam and/or Arabs, in France. It’s the country that censors, distorts, confabulates and obliterates the most (on par with the British). Lastly, Mariano Fortuny inspired Issey Miyake (whose work still fascinates me) with his Pleats Please, amongst others fashion designers. I love Japanese design, and I appreciate the gracious rapport between Japan and the Khaleej and their creative collaborations.
Fashion to me is how I present myself to pray to Allah, and how I choose to position and distance myself in society, many of Mariano Fortuny designs accommodates my preferences, and that’s why I love his work.
