Pretty Little Liars: Ten Theories on the Mannequin Family
Tumblr media
1. Vivian Darkbloom’s family.
Tumblr media
Vivian Darkbloom is Alison's alter-ego, her fantasy self when she’s living another life: “Don’t you wish you could just be someone else?” Charlotte later takes on her identity, fleeing to Paris.
She’s supposed to be what Alison and Charlotte then want to be, and that includes the perfect “model” family, sharing “cherished memories” and “warmth and laughter” that Charlotte didn’t get.
2. Alex Drake’s wealthy family.
Tumblr media
Alex Drake was sold from Mary Drake and Dr Cochrane to a wealthy British family that abandoned her at an orphanage when she was four.
Her adoptive parents along with adoptive siblings that were kept and loved, unlike her. The handprints on the wall are the mark of Alex who was abandoned by her adoptive family and lived a terrible life, even if they’re still living in their perfect model family.
3. Sara Harvey’s family.
Tumblr media
Parents and a little brother, the blonde little girl can be either Sara or her sister instead (similar to number two where Alex is missing from the family dolls).
We learn Sara came from an abusive home in early S6. This could be related to the handprints on the wall.
4. More standard - Charlotte’s family.
Tumblr media
Of course there could be a more standard answer to this question: simply Jason, Charlotte, Jessica, Kenneth. This is when Charlotte was still with her family. Jessica is pregnant with Alison.
After Alison came into the world Charlotte’s life changed not only by the bathtub incident but the boundless love she’d always have for her sister.
5. Bethany’s family.
Tumblr media
Related to Charlotte giving (via Black Widow) condolence flowers to Bethany Young’s parents? Maybe or maybe not. The handprints on the wall are in three different colours. Three different Dilaurentis’s (the family of puppet masters) had its hand in affecting that family, and not for the better.
First - Jessica having an affair with Mr Young.
Second - Charlotte either trying to hit Bethany the night she died or digging up her grave, maybe there’s more we don’t know on Radley…
Third - Alison was supposed to be the target, but the hit ended up being made on Bethany. A fatal mistake…
6. Archer Dunhill’s family.
Tumblr media
The reasoning for why Charlotte would have a mannequin family of Archer’s family (presumably casting him as the young boy) is dubious. However since he was her love it’s not implausible to assume she’d commemorate him in some way - and what better way to do that other than the other thing she loves the most; dolls?
7. Wren Kingston’s family.
Tumblr media
Same with Archer especially since he was a major part of Charlotte meeting her sister and he seemed to know about the Dilaurentis-Drake-Hastings family drama back in *season 5* according to 7x20. Is it really a stretch to suspect a bigger role from him?
8. Charlotte and Archer’s future family.
Tumblr media
With how much Charlotte cares about family it isn’t out of the picture that she’d want one with her true love Archer. The black haired mother Charlotte could be the Vivian Darkbloom disguise she continues donning after she runs away with Archer after being in Welby.
9. Not loved ones but lost ones.
Tumblr media
The woman is Marion Cavanaugh, the man is Darren Wilden, the little girl is Bethany Young, and the little boy is “Charles” Dilaurentis.
It’s not a family, it’s the ones Charlotte has lost along the way, for better or worse, by outside forces or by choice (Side note: The handprints represent who they are survived by, one person with each colour. Maybe Marion is red or Wilden is or Bethany is green, could go either way. Either way none of them are for “Charles”).
Tumblr media
10. Alice’s family.
Tumblr media
No deeper meaning, but could this be the third reference to the mysterious, almost ghost-like, little blonde girl?
(In my view, this seems the most likely theory.)

friendship is magic and i'm thinking hard about tracy fam and their relationships <3 this is simply a list of possibilities for me to use to pick and choose :D Named characters are background characters, then I'm listing the circles they run in
just some silly fun for a thursday morning, gonna go do dishes and maths now :D
SCOTT

personally i don't think he kept in touch with any air force people but i guess there's them too
VIRGIL
Cass McCready
online engineering community (as in Nutty's V.T. Green bc i'm never not obsessed with that fic)
art group
orchestra friends
jazz band buds (Virgil is in a jazz band and they meet up monthly for jazz band shenanigans)
JOHN
Ridley O'Bannon
Tycho Reeves (trust me on this one, I know they didn't really interact but also trust me)

JEFF
Lee Taylor
Colonel Casey
Ned Tedford (once Jeff comes back and they go rescue this hapless man AGAIN, Jeff invites him back for dinner and they become good friends I'm holding onto this one)
air force buddies
rich people pals
Penelope's Dad (Hugh????)
*disclaimer that my personal interpretation of kayo is that she's a good friend who is like a sister and the six of them casually refer to each other as such but isn't actually adopted bc her dad by all accounts is still alive and all that and personally I found the way TAG handled that weird.... but my experience is that I call my two best friends sisters without a trace of irony bc our families were closely intertwined and i've known them since birth and grown up with them. I even lived with them for a time as a child when my parents couldn't look after me. That's what Kayo and the boys feels like to me and is obvs very influenced by my own experience of being sent to live with another family while growing up.

PLL Theories- Marion’s death
One of the biggest plot-holes in PLL is Marion’s death. When Cece recalls the night’s events in a flashback she portrays herself as a young boy. However Alison met Marion when she was alive as a teenager, which would have been impossible if she had died when Cece was a child because Cece was a good 5-6 years older than Alison. So we are left to ponder whether it’s Alison that’s lying about seeing her alive (which she has no real reason to lie about) or Cece.
Figuring out who killed Marion depends on figuring out which one of them is lying. If Alison is lying, then it probably WAS Bethany Young that killed her, like Cece said. But Bethany, we know for a fact, was Alison’s age. We know she must have been Alison’s age because the entire first five seasons would fall apart if she hadn’t been, because there’s no way she could’ve passably been mistaken for Alison and hit over the head and buried alive if she hadn’t been the same age and roughly the same size. So Cece’s story begins to fall apart. If Bethany Young was indeed up on the roof, and the size that Cece claims, then Cece herself would definitely not be as young as she claims. So we’ve already caught out Cece on one lie.
The most likely time-frame for Marion’s death places it at around 1-2 years before Alison’s disappearance. Jenna moved into Rosewood just before Halloween the year before Alison disappeared so it had to have been before that, but it couldn’t have been too long before that, as Alison’s memory shows she was a teen before Toby’s mother died so at the earliest a couple of years before her disappearance, which happened when she was 15, which means Marion’s death occured when she was 13 at the youngest.
Alison and Cece have a 5-6 year age difference. If Marion died when Bethany and Alison were 13, then Cece would have had to have been around 18 when it happened. In order to undergo hormone replacement treatment, a candidate has to be 16 or 18. There’s a minimum age limit and treatment usually lasts between 1-5 years so in all likelihood Cece was undergoing HRT when the incident occured. Some of the side effects of HRT are mood changes, such as depression and neurological changes such as changed perception of emotion, perception of social interaction, and processing of feelings and experiences, according to wikipedia. I think you can guess where I am going with this.
We know that Cece was 18ish. We know that she was up on the roof. We know that Marion had come up at some point and that she fell to her death. The rest are the details we now have to fill in. First of all, Bethany. In perspective, it’s particularly egregious for Bethany to be up on the roof at all (she was not an adult like Marion and Cece, she was still a child technically) and we don’t really have any evidence that backs up Cece’s claims. I understand an 18 year old and a grown up being allowed free reign in the halls but a 13 year old would’ve probably been set a bed time and not allowed to wander off past a certain point. She would probably have been restricted to a certain floor for example. Also when Cece turned 18 she would’ve probably been moved to a different section of rooms at Radley, so there’s a chance she may not have even met her at all.
But even if she was up there, who seems more likely to have pushed Marion? Bethany has nothing to gain, and Cece gets to keep her transformation a secret, which seemed to have been her intention all along, considering the duplicitous way she re-introduced her self to the DiLaurentis family post-op. Bethany had nothing to gain from keeping Cece’s secret. However if Marion’s murder did occur while she was on the roof, her main motivation to keep it would be fear.
Cece admitted she was on the roof. Bethany was long dead by that time so there was no one to deny that she was involved. Bethany was the easiest way to scapegoat not only Marion’s death but also Alison’s. If she thought she was protecting Alison she comes across as sympathetic, right? Not psychopathic. Or at least that’s what she’s banking on, isn’t it? ‘I hit you cause I thought you were her and I was afraid of her hurting you!’ almost sounds noble. It sounds redeemable. It doesn’t sound like something a psychopath would say. It sounds like she truly cares about Alison. Well here’s where it all falls apart. IF she did, she would not have played the game. She certainly wouldn’t have tried to pick it up again after getting out of jail. The dollhouse wouldn’t have happened. She wouldn’t have kidnapped Mona and faked her death (Alison style) and she wouldn’t have attacked Mona and tried to kill her when she threatened her plan to continue being A.
The show may not have gone back and explicitly stated ‘in case you hadn’t figured it out, Cece was the one that killed Marion all along’ but it made it very obvious that it was Cece with its precedence. For example, remember in season 3 when Spencer was so sure that Paige was A/a murderer? She was so set and she had proof! One whole earring, that she found in Paige’s bag! And Emily was sooooo silly for not believing her. Only it turns out that Paige is not only innocent but straight up victim of Alison’s bullying (at Cece’s encouragement) and being framed by the A team which we know that Cece was in at that point. And who was the one the set Spencer down red herring road? Cece. Who was the de-facto co-leader of the A team at the time? Cece. Who was the shifty new character that needed to deflect suspicion from their own self in order to get closet to the girls and win them over? Cece. She has a history of throwing innocent people under the bus for the stuff that she is doing and we know she hadn’t changed by the fact that she tried to kill Mona in order to keep her secret and was dead set to keep playing the game by then so really, all evidence points towards Cece being Marion’s murderer, and covering it up the same way she covered up being A and stuff so really, yeah, it’s pretty obvious. The show already made Cece a lying, psychopathic murderer. It’s not at all a stretch that she would not only kill Marion but also pin it on someone else. She killed Wilden. She might’ve even been the one that killed Garrett.

I read Marion Cavanaugh's obituary. Did you know she was a nurse to pediatrician? I wonder if she was somehow connected to the adoptions of babies from Radley. I'm doubting Charlotte's story that it was Bethenny who pushed Marion from the roof.
It could be. Wouldn’t it be an interesting story to find out it was Mary who pushed Marion?
for anyone else who wants to read the obituary:
The passing of Marion Cavanaugh is a great loss for many in Rosewood. She left us too soon, off to some new adventures, something the rest of us could not see. Although she was not a rich woman, not famous… She was Mom and Friend and Marion. She was a kind soul and a bright spirit. She will be surely missed.
A life long resident of Rosewood, Pennsylvania, Marion Cavanaugh was beloved by many. Having grown up in the small community, she had forged a lifetime of friends and touched many lives.
After attending Rosewood High, Marion went on to Nursing School at Hollis College and graduated as an LVN. She soon took a full-time job working for local Pediatrician, Dr. Laura Sylvester. Marion loved her work and would regularly express how fortunate she felt to have found a job where she could help children become the healthy, successful people they would become.
In her private time, Marion loved the outdoors. Hiking and camping were passions of hers in her younger years and even when the pressures of live prevented the exclusive trips she never took, she would make a point to get into the local wilderness as much as possible. Bird-watching became a hobby and she would spend hours cataloging her sightings.
Marion is survived by her husband, Daniel, and son, Toby.
but also as a side note, this is a super long obituary, is it not? Like it could just be different here but obituaries here in my city are relatively short. “Although she was not a rich woman, not famous….” is such an odd thing to write in an obit >.

Toby Cavanaugh (HEAVY AU and different fandom alltogether)
33
Witch-demigod
Toby is the biological son of the original greek God Hades, and the witch Marion Cavanaugh, adopted by who thought to be his father, Daniel. He lived in Rosewood most of his life, hiding the true identity of his family, even to his father. Because of how limiting Rosewood was, he went back to his family’s origin, Ravenswood, where his powers were more helpful.
Marion focused on teaching him how to fight, both in sense of magic and physical prowess for the safety of her son.
Like in canon, his father married Jenna’s mother, but he left Rosewood as soon as possible, and the accusations towards him only served him an excuse to develop his talents.
He’s a computer expert and works from the phone helping solving issues so he has enough time to do what he needs to do. In fact, it’s easy to see him talking to a client while fighting demons (or crime)
Telekinesis (levitation, flight), Chi manipulation, (chi syphoning, energy blast, physical enhancement, aura reading, emotion perception), pleasure inducement, mind control (through hormonal manipulation), illusion casting, teleportation (by transforming into ashes or smoke), ash manipulation, pyrokinesis, thermokinesis, telepathy ( telepathic blasts, illusion casting of psionic origin, mind swap)

If you guys are wondering what Aria’s motives for being -A would be. Here’s my input, consider it an AU type of thing;
How Aria became -A could revolve around the fact that she would do anything to protect her loved ones, mainly her family, and she started targeting Alison because Alison is a threat to her father’s relationship with her mother. (pre-pilot, pre-Ali’s disappearance, and attempted murder).
Why she started it up again could be because she was related to the person who ended up in Alison’s grave. She’s out for revenge or wants some answers and closure. Perhaps she thinks one of her friends had something to do with what happened to Bethany Young.
She doesn’t hate the girls and doesn’t work alone. Wren, Lucas, Mona, Cece, Sara, Alex Drake, Noel, Jenna, Shana, Melissa, Mary, Jason, Wilden, Toby, and Archer Dunhill have been the help. They plan out these dangerous situations to keep suspicions off of her when in fact, she’s been the real puppet master the entire time and never had an official reveal. Everybody had an official reveal except for her.
Because let’s be real here, protecting Ezra was the stupidest shit I’ve ever heard. Aria should have filed that police report. It was the right thing to do and would stop Ezra from publishing his book about Alison, which both Aria and Big-A burnt, by the way. I mean, seriously, @imarleneking-blog and the other writers put many Aria is -A clue in the show that it’s impossible not to believe it. Aria would have been the best -A ever. Secondly, Aria and Alison’s relationship was never really touched on. Every experience Aria encountered was planned between her and the -A team anonymously to make her seem innocent towards Hanna, Spencer, and Emily so they would never suspect her. In my opinion, that would have been phenomenal writing. The show would get praise if it ended that way. Then every clue about Aria would have made sense. The symptoms of Dissociative Identity Disorder, clues about her being Red Coat, a.k.a, The Puppet Master, clues about her possibly related to Bethany and Wren. It all would’ve made sense, and we’d feel sympathy for our villain because not only did Alison try and destroy her family, but she lost her sister and was a patient at Radley Sanitarium with Charlotte and witnessed Marion Cavanaugh’s death.

Wait, I didn’t pick up on this before, but how old was Wilden?
Okay, the wiki is saying early to mid-30′s. Fine, and Charlotte?
29 at time of death?
Okay...so, at most, Wilden would have been only about 5 or 6 years older than Charlotte.
So, in the flashback, Charlotte is like ...WAIT.
The timeline says Charlotte is born in 1988, and Marion Cavanaugh dies in 2007. How? That would make Charlotte 19/20. Not the young age she is in the flashback, which is where I was going with this post.
