Ayrton Senna driving the 1988 'Marlboro' McLaren MP4/4, via Automotive Daily
in the wake of McLaren's severely underwhelming 2024 livery reveal, lest we forget just how much cunt they once served. fly high MP4/4, that hyper-orange gamer design could never replace you. 🕊️

ferrari race suits are out and they don't look too bad but I think we just got red fireproofs with a white bib on the back......
and now i get to yap let’s get into it
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i’m not going to yap for very much tbh overall i do like the way these look often times in ferrari suits we see the yellow and white split or charles will have minor white accents and carlos minor yellow accents referential to the flags of their home countries (which is different to the identifiers they always have across their hips)
the inclusion of the white and yellow stripes in this case are then multi purposed bc u know this is classic ferrari think back to the marlboro days and the iconic red and white suits we all know this but it’s also significant to the drivers individually by maintaining that coloured connection to their national pride in a way that allows for a more unified look across the team
stripes are good as well they provide shaping to a garment that doesn’t have any fucking shape to it highlighting the shoulder and waistlines specifically by tapering the waist inwards creates an illusion of broader shoulders and smaller hips then pair that with the stripes from the hips downward they’re giving my men here an hourglass figure illusion and it’s different to the regular monochromatic or colour blocked suits we’ve seen from them before
am i a fan of the fireproofs ? not exactly i think they’re not worth a lot of comment im not a fan of this kind of front-back colour blocking u see in a lot of different teams COUGH MCLAREN COUGH i do wish they had used this as an opportunity to incorporate some of the black from the modern ferrari colours but honestly i believe they saw the positive responses to the race suits for vegas 2023 and decided to replicate that energy as much as they could into the current season paying homage to that iconic era of ferrari whilst remaining modern .
this will always be the best race suit tho

I realized Osano and Nikolai actually translate super well into a racing au….
(Golden King is my Marlboro ripoff, and Nikolai races for McAulay-King, which is…80s Mclaren but recolored orange. basically.) (Osano races for a Ferrari equivalent that has no name yet)
Osano’s father is the owner of one of McAulay’s largest secondary sponsors, which is why Osano can’t get a seat there despite wanting to.
theyre rivals. osano calls nikolai "dear" in interviews. their pr teams are dying

lewis hamilton, p1, during the post-race press conference, canada - june 13, 2010 (transcription under the cut)
Interviewer: "So here we have the top three finishers of the Grand Prix of Canada: the winner, Lewis Hamilton, Vodafone McLaren-Mercedes, fourteenth career victory; second, Jenson Button, Vodafone McLaren-Mercedes, third one-two of the season for McLaren; and third, Fernando Alonso, Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro. Lewis, back to back wins, you're leading the championship, and I guess the love affair with Canada continues." Lewis: "It's been a tremendous weekend. It's been fantastic. I got here on Wednesday and things have just gone so well throughout the weekend. I've had incredible support from the fans here-so many Brits out here, which is great to see-and yeah, the team did an exceptional job. I think the race was one of the toughest races so far, but that's what you want, to have the hardest fight. These guys did an incredible job. Jenson did a great job, and another one-two for us, so very happy and proud of the team." [time jump] Interviewer: "Lewis, finally, to you, tactical victory also over Red Bull today. Just sum up where you and the McLaren team are right now." Lewis: "Well, I think we're clearly doing everything we can to close the gap to them. I think perhaps in other circuits where the downforce is a little bit higher maybe they'll still be a little bit ahead, but we're continuously improving. The guys back at the factory are doing a phenomenal job, so I have no doubts that we can close that gap and again pull ahead. But clearly on the race weekends we're doing a better job, the both of us and the team, so hopefully we can continue with that. This is a special day for me because I obviously won my first grand prix here, and to come back and repeat that after three years is a real pleasure." Interviewer: "Well done."

So McLaren are doing some sort of triple crown inspired special livery for Monaco (probably not dissimilar to an amalgamation of the three cars that they are running for the Indy 500)
Tumblr media
It’s hard to tell but I think the black front looks like an old Le Mans livery, the sidepods possibly an old F1 Marlboro McLaren livery and the orange rear wing from a 70s Indy 500 livery

I am not designed to come second or third. I am designed to win.
- Ayrton Senna
Ayrton Senna da Silva was born on 21 March 21 1960, into a Brazilian family. Having received a miniature go-kart from his father when he was four years old, he became obsessed with racing. His colourful and adventurous childhood was pretty much filled with racing - from Grand Prix mornings in his early years to racing for the first time at the young age of 13. He was 21 when he went single-seater racing in Britain. The only way was up from there.
He made his Formula 1 debut with Toleman Motorsport in 1984. Senna confirmed his phenomenal talent in racing during Round 6 at Monaco - after winning 2nd next to Alain Prost’s McLaren. It was the only Grand Prix that was run in wet conditions.
In 1988 he won his first Formula 1 championship with Honda Marlboro McLaren, where Senna beat his teammate Alain Prost eight wins to seven. This started one of the most infamous feuds in Formula 1 racing. The following year, Senna lost the championship to Prost, only to come back again for the next two years and snag the title both times. This event made him one of the youngest racers to win three ‘Formula 1 Championships’.
His best performances came during his final season with McLaren, after which he moved to Rothmans Williams Renault for the 1994 season - the season that ended what could have been the most glorious career in Formula 1.
On May 1, 1994, at the San Marino Grand Prix, Senna speared off the Imola track and hit a concrete wall. The impact resulted in Ayrton Senna’s death. The whole world mourned his untimely demise.
One of the greatest Formula 1 drivers of all time, Ayrton Senna continues to hold this reputation to this day. He was an inspiration to many with his work, writings, and life. I was to young to see him drive but my father did. Watching the archival footage of his races made me understand what a tragic loss his death was to Formula One racing and to motorsports in general.

So if McLaren can have this big ass logo of a vape sponsor, can they let Marlboro come back as a sponsor? I think cigarettes are disgusting but the Marlboro logo eats idk
