*** You may need to open the image in a new tab to get high res ***
... to do that on mobile, I think you click on the image. To do that on desktop, right click and select open image in new tab or something similar.
This reference is made out of a piece of the high resolution map by the wyrd sisters. It has estimated locations of Serault and its neighboring Marquisate town, Alyons. I didn't draw the border between the two but you can imagine it. I have it between Serault and Andoral's Reach, such that Alyons does not have much contiguous land and only has the 3 vassal villages nearby. That Marquisate is currently more powerful than Serault, and has additional lands that are not contiguous elsewhere. I forget what the term for that is, but there is one.
Also featured: the Last River that is meant to flow through Serault and make it a river port, plus some other rivers I made up and many newly named lakes. I didn't name every lake, but I named a lot of lakes if you see an unnamed lake, look for a near lake, add "petite" to its name, and there you go. I realized part way through they should probably be Lac __ if named in "Orlesian" and Lake __ if named in "Common" ... just assume people call them by both depending.
Wherever you put it, it is important that the Last River actually ends up flowing down past somewhere relevant, like near Andoral's Reach, and crossing the Imperial Highway! This is because if it was just a river that went or came from nowhere useful, like the marshes, it wouldn't be passable for commerce to be coming into Serault.
I am assuming the source of the Last is in the Blasted Hills, snow melt or one or more springs or both, and flows south-south west. The River Dawn I have it intersecting with in the Tirashan is a river I made up and it starts with a natural spring and ends meeting up with the Last and then going underground right at that point.
Since making this I have seen people put Serault on the little scrap of river leading into the lake I have named Lake Nahashin. I kind of accept that, because yes that way you don't need to imagine the original canon maps left off a whole river, but really? A passable series of rivers and lakes through a marsh area? I am not a river boat captain or anything so I may be wrong but I assume it wouldn't ever have been popular with trade through a Marsh. Maybe someone who does that is imagining the "Nahashin Marshes" label really only represents scattered marshes between the lakes, and not a major nearly unbroken stretch of marsh. Anyway I like my Last River also because it gives me a good spot to put Alyons that also lets Alyons be relevant and more important than Serault at this point. Also it lets you put Serault actually away from the lakes and marsh, which are never mentioned in The Last Court, and right next to the Tirashan woods, which are repeatedly mentioned as being "right out the back door" from Chateau Serault.
Why is it, and Serault for that matter, missing off the actual official maps?
1) because it's way out west and nobody cares. That explains Alyons I guess, too. 2) it was purged as part of the "Shame of Serault" shunning which would be a few generations back. Alyons got left off too because they took off the Last River to punish Serault and impact its trade. The merchants they still get are hold outs and people really into getting their hands on the best glass. Perhaps authorities felt nobody would follow a ban on Serault glass, so it was better to deter trade and effect the punishment using official map changes.
You can also see I added some made up villages for Serault to have as vassals, each with their own local lord or lady (styled "baron" informally, if they want, even if official petty titles are banned) ... or Ser if a chevalier or general knight.
Find more about those villages, and the draconologist's outpost, Chateau Estival, HERE.
More about the rivers and lakes, HERE.
More about Alyons and its villages HERE whenever I make that post.

no one's ready for me to do proper development on Posy and the Horned Knight. no one's ready for the echoing themes in both their stories.
#OOC / HOLLY.#the Horned Knight who considers himself half of a duality with the Marquise de Serault and has a sort of fixation on her#which stems from his fixation on the Shame aka her grandfather who was once the Marquis de Serault#because the Shame summoned and bound him but rejected and abandoned him after#thus his fixation is akin to an abandoned child haunted by that rejection and needing closure and to understand why#and honestly wanting to 'fix' it. to 'earn' the acceptance of the one who abandoned him#and Posy who is utterly alone with his mother gone#abandoned by his father and rejected by his community and desperate for the acceptance of the only family he has left#[and he'll never get closure or understanding or anything with his father much like the HK because him and the Shame are dead]#the only family he has left being the current Marquise de Serault and her brother#feeling like love and acceptance are things he has to earn and things he can earn if he just tries hard enough#to the point of breaking himself to gain these merits#HK who sees this boy rejected and lost like a mirror of himself#HK who is also at this time grieving the murder of his son by hunters#HK who takes Posy to foster and will in time become the father Posy never had as well as the father HE never had#using the term father a lil loosely because HK is a spirit so it's like [wobbles hand]#oh the lore I have in my head for HK y'all don't even know#there are issues with this relationship i.e. Posy is being fostered but has to 'earn' adoption#but it's a journey for both of them they're both growing it's a joint story

This might be a bit out of thin air, but - can you please tell us about your Marquis of Serault?
OH BOY CAN I
Okay okay okay! Augustin de Serault! He is... in way over his head. This was never supposed to be his role; he's the younger sibling and was raised accordingly. But his sister's no longer in the running (still haven't figured out why, but she's not), so when their mother died... well, there he was. The marquis of Serault, fancy that. This is a very stressful job.
He is a good marquis, though. He loves his people and his home, and he strives to do his best for them! It helps that he's an excellent diplomat; his sister didn't exactly excel in dealing with people, so he's always kind of expected to serve his home in a diplomatic capacity. He's trying to convince himself that this is basically the same as what he always expected he'd end up doing. But this isn't something he ever wanted for himself; Augustin's always preferred the library to the great hall, and he likes his privacy far more than any really good marquis would. He's well-loved, though, even if he is always incredibly stressed. Which is impressive, for a secret apostate who set up his marquisate as a haven for escaped mages (hey, if they manage to reach Serault alive they're clearly in enough control of themselves that they're not a danger).
...Oh yeah, he's also a mage. He's really glad that the jokes about his ancestry are mostly limited to wisecracks about him supposedly having a tail, because there are much worse things about his heritage that his people could be picking up on. This is one of many reasons why he's actually pretty relieved that the Chantry is staying Over There and showing zero interest in Serault, and the main reason why he's so worried about Justinia suddenly feeling the need to stop by right before her fancy conference. When you're a marquis whose magic has been hidden from the Chantry since he was a child in a way that was only possible because the Chantry wanted nothing to do with Serault, you get a bit antsy when the Chantry suddenly wants something to do with Serault! And then the Inquisition shows up and starts asking questions, and poor Augustin is constantly painfully aware that if he gets caught out as a mage in charge of an Orlesian marquisate that offers shelter to runaway Circle mages in the middle of the mage rebellion he would almost certainly be brutally killed and Serault razed as an example even without the whole "Were you involved in the Divine's death" situation. Essentially, my man is having a time and deserves better. Fortunately he does eventually get to meet Alaris, which ultimately leads to meeting Hawke and Tahel, which basically ends up with Serault getting some very powerful allies who would not be happy with her marquis getting murdered by the Chantry.

Ask!
S H A R E
(Previously on "ask games" . . .)
S - Show us an example of your personal headcanon
Velanna and Sigrun (Dragon Age) start a relationship during the course of their adventure. Finn specializes in Elven magic, as Arianne is not a mage and thus cannot make use of their findings. If Merrill weren't so innocent, Isabela would've started a relationship with her; Sebastian would like to marry Bethany, but the mage-templar conflicts put a pin in his plans. As previously mentioned, my Hawke is definitely elf-blooded, as is my Marquis de Serault.
H - What is your favourite source text for fandom stuff (e.g., TV shows, movies, books, anime, Western animation, etc.)?
To absolutely no one's surprise: Dragon Age. Anything Dragon Age goes for me. Aside from that... I honestly don't know. If we consider "10 Things I Hate About You", where I liked both movie and TV show, it'd probably be Taming Of The Shrew, though I didn't particularly care for it.
(Using the "K" from "Ask" due to previously answered letters)
K - What character has your favourite development arc/the best development arc?
Zuko from Avatar. I guess I could count multiple Avatar characters here (not Aang, however), or even Dragon Prince characters (though some less so), but... eh. Too easy? But it's not about redemption here, so... also Damon and Bonnie from Vampire Diaries, and likely other characters I cannot think about right now.

Confession: My Marquis of Serault absolutely rode Carver Hawke like there’s no tomorrow when he stopped by. He invited Carver to dinner but was just reenacting the “twink ‘bout to pounce” meme the entire damn time.

original Serault worldbuilding posts

Putting Serault, the River Last, its vassal villages and other rivers on the map:
LINK HERE to the original map post. This reference is made out of a cropped piece of the high resolution map by the wyrd sisters.
LINK HERE directly to the map in a new tab, which is where if on desktop you should be able to see the higher res details. Sometimes I have to refresh the link to make it work.
Tumblr media
Villages with vassal 'barons' or chevaliers managing them for Serault include: Castanafeu, Guenoles, Pastulaire, Lud-dans-la-Brume, Plaine Dorée, Champlevé, Gothivallon, Bellitaneaux, Chateau Estival (this one actually less a village, more a dragon research station)
Villages which are vassals to Alyons include: Val Colline (which exists in canon), Lys-en-Champs, and Ton Chemin. And I am imagining they have vassals in the Heartlands too under the same Marquisate but not contiguous with the rest.
LINK HERE to where the villages and decisions are described & discussed.
Rivers listed and discussed HERE
There are many smaller and unlisted hamlets and farmsteads, collections of charcoal burner huts, creeks, streams, ponds, with or without names, scattered around.
My story set in this version of Serault is HERE.
To be updated.

Okay so cringe fail Seraultine ranger time ❤️ He is connected to my Marquise de Serault aka the Huntress, Dyaine, and her brother aka the Scholar, Alloine, but he is based on details that are canon regardless of the PC. The Marquis/e's father (Aurois) cheated on their mother multiple times. He attempted to be discreet to avoid her wrath but well. He is the result of one of these affairs.
His name is Hyacinthe because those are the flowers Aurois would bring his mother during their affair. Unfortunately, she remained in love with him long after he'd forgotten her. However, his sobriquet is Posy, which can mean both a small bouquet and a person rather intent on impressing others. Not only is he rather small in build but he is also intent on proving himself and earning a place in his community. Maker knows it was not particularly welcoming to a bastard, especially one as hare-brained as him. Always letting his mouth write checks his ass can't catch, a braggart who can't back it up.
His ultimate goal in life thus became to obtain the recognition of his half-siblings and be accepted into their family. To that end, he found a ranger in Dyaine's service who was willing to take him on as an apprentice. Although Posy isn't half as clever as he thinks he is, he took to the training shockingly well, doing at least well enough to join Dyaine's hunting party. When she charged off on her own mid-hunt, as is her wont, he miraculously kept up with her. Seeing that they were alone, he took the opportunity to explain who he was and express his genuine hope that they might regard each other as siblings. This was only a headache to Dyaine, however.
The previous marquise was Dyaine's mother, and daughters are favored for inheritance in Serault, so on that front he wasn't much of a threat. But, he was still a nuisance with which she simply couldn't be bothered, so she sent him on a fool's quest. This was in those few months before the Divine's visit to Serault when Dyaine's relationship with the Horned Knight was freshly established — another headache she would rather not have, frankly.
Every Seraultine knows that the House of Glass' ancestral mask was confiscated by the Chantry in retribution for the Shame's actions. Dyaine explained that the mask has beautiful antlers made of Seraultine glass, and she had a mind to make a mimicry to greet the Divine. (She did not; this was all to fool the idiot youth.) The antlers would have to be equally as spectacular but more fitting to her particular tastes. She told him that if he could bring her the horns from the helm of the Horned Knight deep in the Heartwood, he would have proven himself a true brother indeed. The mere idea terrified him, but his braggart's tongue wouldn't let him refuse.
Dyaine expected he would simply disappear, not actually attempt the quest. But, the trouble with his bragging is he tries to back it up even when he knows he can't. Thus he did indeed hunt the Horned Knight to the depths of the Heartwood where he holds court. There the Horned Knight sat in feast with his dryad court; Posy thought to take advantage of the situation but failed, as is typical, rather spectacularly. Fell out of the tree he was hiding in and landed literally in the Horned Knight's lap.
Terrified, he stammered out an explanation and boldly declared (as boldly as one can declare whilst their teeth chatter) that he would succeed. The Horned Knight's rage turned into pity looking on this foolish boy who had so clearly been sent to his death. This insult could not go unanswered, but there was some room for mercy in his heart. This youth was orphaned and unwanted by the only family he had left; the Horned Knight had recently lost a son. Thus he declared Posy would be bound to him to take the form of a moon-white stag at sunset and at the Horned Knight's will, and that he would perform the necessary duties which had once fallen to his son. Perhaps, if he proved himself, he would even be adopted. Of course, he could also trot himself out before his half-sister and submit himself to her arrows. If it was antlers she wanted from him, he now had a most impressive rack.

A reason why it's a real shame DAI never takes us to Serault: Alaris would meet Marquis Augustin de Serault, a man with so few fucks left to give about what the Chantry thinks that he's about five seconds from feeding the next person who expects him to be a good little follower of the Orlesian Chantry to the first thing to rear its head in the woods, and immediately develop a massive crush on him.

i managed it. i managed to fit the de seraults in as an offshoot of the family line from the ghilan'nains (from The ghilan'nain's child) that eventually splits into the isa'cinnanains (dalish) and the de seraults (backwater orlesian nobility with LOTS OF CONNECTIONS TO HALLA LIKE. EVERYWHERE?? their heraldry. their mask. the tirashan right there)
they split off at varying times and end up in different areas (isa'cinnanains staying near arlathan in antiva and de seraults obv in orlais). theyre gonna absorb Alyons at the end and after The Big Orlais Split end up as an independant marquisate bordering the new dales, nevarra, and the remaining duchy of orlais :) OH YEAH my marquis is Séraphin de Serault and he romances the wayward bard who i have given the name Luc :))

i love Orlesian mask culture, though?? like the whole idea behind it is not to hide one’s identity behind a mask but actually to reveal one’s identity with a mask. it’s such a fascinating inversion of what you’d normally assume a “mask” means or is intended for.  the masks proclaim identity, and they proclaim loyalties. they trumpet one’s role and one’s status – harlequins all wear the same mask as each other, the degree of elaboration of a mask tells you at a glance if this person is noble (and if so, how important their title might be) or if they work in the household of a noble. you can look at the mask and immediately know relevant details of who and what the person in front of you is.
and then there’s the quote from vivienne:
We all wear masks my dear, not just the people in Orlais. Orlesians codify this truth, make it visible. By giving each of these selves its own separate face, they believe they can be their truest selves unmasked.
and if you put that together with what Cole says if you ask him if he liked the masks at the ball (“Those weren’t their faces?”) you can really begin to understand the psychological and maybe emotional or even spiritual connection Orlesians have to their masks. because yes, the masks truly are their faces.
(as a side note, given the existence of the cult of Masked Andraste – Andraste, worshiped in a huntress aspect, and masked (as she is nowhere else even in Orlesian culture) – from the Last Court game in the DA Keep, i have a feeling that Orlesian mask culture dates waaaay back, to the pre-empire days, and probably directly to tribal Ciriane beliefs. the Masked Andraste herself is likely to be a pre-Andrastian huntress deity slapped with a thin coat of Chantry paint, a holdover from Ancient times.)
