The twin symbolism and dynamics in Batwoman just gets me every time. Lotta rambling under the cut.
The Kane sisters being twins and Beth expecting Kate to just feel it, feel her, that day in the basement. Because that's what twins do, right? The phenomenon of twin telepathy/twin empathy, just this odd stereotype of twins being able to know things about each other that they couldn't possibly. And Alice constantly exhibits this amazing ability to recognize Kate no matter what; through costumes, voice changes, aging, even with a new face, based purely on her eyes.
And, as Ocean points out, Kate never recognizes Alice in the way Alice recognizes her. I think that's because Kate was never looking for Alice--- she's always looking for the version of Beth from before the accident. A Beth without trauma, both from that day and every day that followed. Kate would never be satisfied with anyone other than the Beth she lost.
Meanwhile Alice is so desperate for Kate, even when she pretends not to be. Even when she hides it behind a veil of hatred and violence. She felt Kate on the other side of that wall, she saw Kate in Batwoman's eyes, she saw the real Kate through Circe. And that's not even mentioning the parallels between Beth/Alice and Kate/Circe. Alice would recognize Kate no matter what, because she is always longing for that tight sibling bond in everything and everyone.
Hence Alice's relationships with Mouse and Poison Mary.
Alice lost a twin, so Mouse became her new one. Her brother, twined in memory's mystic band. They formed such a specific trauma bond because Alice missed having a sibling, despite book Alice not having a brother named Mouse or Johnny. Despite the fact that after taking the name Alice, she couldn't remember her life as Beth and as a twin sister before killing off Mabel. Alice still knew she was a twin and a sister. She just barely remembered Kate, just a smidge, just enough to know she was supposed to mean twin to someone. She always recognized that. She always recognized the part of her that was Kate, even though she couldn't put a proper name to it.
(And Mouse immediately accepts Alice as his new twin sister, because he, too, is so desperate for that type of close-knit bond. He's been deprived of sympathic family bonds since the burn marks.)
Then there's her dynamic with Mary. Alice always, always viewed Mary as a threat. That's why she targeted her for death, sending a minion after her in the clinic. That's part of why she poisoned her. Mary even said that she essentially replaced Alice as Kate's sister. Alice never underestimated Mary's potential, especially when it came to Kate. They both found the sister they always wanted in each other.
But this is on twins, so-
And, of course, there's Marquis. Marquis claimed that he and Alice were born on the same day; she was kidnapped, he was buzzed, it all happened because of the Joker. So almost twins, right? Ever since that day on the bus, Marquis was never the same. Something in him changed, his empathy was turned off (and I'm going to resist going on a side tangent on how having low to no empathy doesn't inherently make you violent, sadistic or evil). And ever since Beth fell down that bridge, she just broke over and over again until Alice slipped through the cracks. Parallels. Familiarity. Marquis saw a piece of himself in Alice, that's why he wanted her. He was more attracted to the idea of himself than the idea of her.
And Alice didn't see anything in him. She didn't see Kate in him, so she didn't see herself in him. That's why she hallucinated Mouse, her only brother and the only twin she chose, instead. All her other siblings were forced on her. But Alice chose to become siblings with Mouse, despite that he was originally only looking for a friend in her. Marquis was basically trying to replace Ryan with Alice, just like Alice had tried episodes prior to replace Kate with Mary.
Just-- twin characters and symbolism and dynamics and parallels and trauma in Batwoman, y'know?? good shit

Vincent takes a liking to you, even though you’re loyal to your boss, Winston (Vincent de Gramont x reader)
Summary: You're working closely with Winston, but the Marquis wants you for himself.
Note: I might write an actual chapter about the time Winston and Wick show up in Paris. / If you want to know when I post new stuff, follow @unreliablesnakefics and hit the get notifications button. I don't have a taglist.
Part 2(ish)
Bedside Charon, you were one of Winston’s most trusted employees, an assassin who decided to settle for a quieter life–if there was anything that could be considered quiet in this line of work, that is.
Throughout the conversation, the Marquis’ eyes kept falling on you, watching you as a predator stalked its prey. Winston noticed too. You knew because he gave you a worried look at one point.
After he shot Charon and began to walk out of the room, he stopped next to you and said, “You’re coming with me.” It was an order, not a request. You gave your boss a desperate look, hoping he could say or do something to stop him, but he remained silent. “Are you loyal to the Table? If so, you come with me now. If not, you’ll get a bullet like your colleague,” the Marquis told you coldly.
You soon found out he was going straight back to Paris after this. “I don’t even have clothes or other stuff with me, let me–” you tried, but he stopped you, telling you that he would take you shopping once you arrived to France.
He kept his eyes on you the whole time. On the jet, you couldn’t look up from the magazine you had previously found without meeting his gaze. It was tough not knowing whether he wanted to kill you or study you like a lab rat. Neither sounded like a good option, but you would rather choose the latter to stay alive.
When you landed in Paris, he showed you he wasn’t kidding about the shopping. He had already asked one of his men there to get you something new to wear, along with some necessities you would need to freshen up. Then to your surprise he asked you if you would rather sleep or go shopping, and when you chose to get it over with, he took you to all the best places around the city.
Your entire body froze when he walked over to you to take a closer look at the elegant gown you were wearing in a boutique, his fingers running down from your shoulder to your hips. You gulped, definitely not happy to have this kind of attention, but you didn't say anything. You were like a deer in the headlight, frozen from fear.
For whatever reason, the Marquis insisted on you staying in the bedroom next to his. He told you about his plans for the next day or so, expecting you to follow him around wherever he went, always wearing some fancy clothes.
In the evening his chef prepared delicious meals for the two of you, and he kept you close the whole night, his fingers not-so-accidentally brushing against yours every now and then. It was hard to believe it, but he was clearly flirting with you. Even though a part of you found it flattering, you still couldn't understand what he wanted from you exactly.
He took you to the Opera the next day, but instead of focusing on the performance of the dancer, his eyes were locked on you. “You are beautiful, my love,” he said at one point, shocking you with the pet name. “Do you know why I brought you here?” You didn't know if he was referring to Paris or the opera, but you still shook your head.
Since he didn't elaborate until you got back to his place, your mind was in overdrive by the time you entered his mansion. “Why did you bring me here?” you asked him before he could disappear. Instead of answering, he just smiled at you then pulled you into a kiss.
It was terrible, really. You knew that Winston would be utterly disappointed in you if he found out, but you couldn't resist the Marquis' charm. When his fingers began to look for the zipper of your dress, you knew you were a goner.

Today's compilation:
The Wild Bunch 1995 Reggae / Roots Reggae / Rocksteady / Dub
First off, let me just say that I am in total awe of this crop of reggae instrumentals from the 60s and 70s here. So much music since has come with so much more fuss and technological advancements, and yet an unscalable pile of the stuff that came out after this doesn't seem to come close to how good a bunch of these simple tunes still are. In a broad sense, all these songs' formulas are pretty simple, but they really still just manage to click so damn well 😌.
From this comp's liner notes:
During the past eight years, Trojan have pioneered the 'Revival' Reggae scene. Our re-issue programme has preserved some of the best vocals ever recorded in Jamaica, but with the emphasis being placed on some of the island's many talented singers in recent years, the musicians have tended to be ignored. This current release reverses that trend by turning the spotlight onto the 'players of instruments', and in so doing we pay tribute to Kingston's legendary session men.
Now, because nearly all of these are straight-up instrumentals, they all pretty much operate in the same way, and each of them seem to have one thing in common that ends up either making or breaking the tune: the lead instrument. Because reggae riddims are inherently repetitive and steady, if left alone, they will naturally get stale. So, it takes a good melody of some kind to be laid atop that riddim in order to lend the song some much needed variety. And in a whole lot of these 27 tunes, that ends up coming to remarkable fruition.
It's hard to even really know where to begin with this album since there's so much goodness to be found within it, but the thick, whistle-ringing improvisational organ of Lloyd Charmer's "Ling Tong Ting" is an absolutely terrific place to start. Then the JJ All Stars get topsy-turvy with the audio channels on "Memphis Underground," by sending the melodic leads exclusively and *very prominently* through the left, and 90% of the riddim through the right; Herman Marquis' "Tom's Version," whose intro I'm pretty sure I've heard sampled in at least one hip hop tune before (Wu-Tang, maybe? It's honestly driving me crazy that I can't put my finger on it), then follows by doing a wonderful job of harmonizing its organ and trumpet, yielding this fully warm and satisfying haze; the legendary Augustus Pablo, who singlehandedly managed to transform the melodica from a mere plaything for children into an instrument with serious gravitas, shows why on a rootsy piece of dub called "Great Pablo;" and then towards the end, we get a bit of a surprise with a piece of gospel-reggae that's actually not an instrumental: the Harry J All Stars "Holy Moses," which is aided by a small set of female singers whose deployment of soul harmonies reminds of the backup singing that can be found on a bunch of Bob Marley hits.
But the closing title tune by the Music Doctors may be both the most remarkable and most fun track of them all, for the simple fact that it uniquely trades its leads between—not things like guitars, horns, and organs—but just bass and drums. And the bassist just seems to carefreely play this laid-back and very recognizable piece of melody from The Jackson 5's "I Want You Back;" it's so good!
So, a phenomenal collection of rare Jamaican reggae instrumental classics here, from the genre's premier label itself, Trojan. Yesterday, I posted about an excellent metal cassette from 1985 that's also called The Wild Bunch, and given how good that that album was, I really didn't think that this one could outdo it, but it very much did!
Highlights:
Selwyn Baptiste - "Mo' Bay" Boris Gardiner - "Memories of Love" The Dynamites - "Phantom" Sound Dimension - "Soul Food" Lloyd Charmers - "Ling Tong Ting" The Aggrovators - "The Sniper" JJ All Stars - "Memphis Underground" Lynn Taitt & The Jets - "Love Me Forever" Herman Marquis - "Tom's Version" The Tennors - "Copy Me Donkey" Winston Wright - "Heads or Tails" Augustus Pablo - "Great Pablo" Harry J All Stars - "Holy Moses" Music Doctors - "Wild Bunch"

Etat Libre's samples are back in stock! What 4 perfumes do you recommend? I hear Rien is Poe's scent. I'm 👀
I was born to answer this question
You or Someone Like You (refreshing mint mojito poured on a sun-warmed freshly clipped lawn next to a budding rose bush) This is my summer fragrance. It is unlike anything and I’m so intoxicated by it. On my skin it dries to a clean lavender. It’s phenomenal and lives in my purse.
Yess Rien. Rien is leather and jet fuel and recycled cabin air, worn orange canvas, polyester straps, with a hint of clean boi smell. Poe Dameron 10000%
Marquis De Sade Attaquer Le Soleil Do you wanna smell like a redwood tree in a Northern California heatwave?? Because this is that. It’s sooo resinous and divine. I am a sucker for that woody incense. It’s such a competent smelling fragrance. You’d smell like you have many leather bound books and all your socks match. It’s a solid base perfume for layering lighter florals or citrus on top too.
The Spice Must Flow Duke Leto. My winter fragrance. This is a head turner, people will compliment you and ask you what you’re wearing. the oud, the desert rose, and the incense are so high quality, this lasts a super long time especially if you spray it on your scarves or wool sweaters. It’s classy and perfect for winter get togethers. It has a Royal regal air to it. Miranda Preistly would totally wear this, ykwim?
In all fairness I should mention these are not their most popular fragrances! Those would be She Was An Anomaly, I Am Trash, Like This, Une Amorette, and Fat Electrician. But I don’t really care for those tbh 🤷‍♀️
