If you had to pick a top three favorite episodes of any panel shows EVER, which would you choose? One of mine would have to be Terry Wogan guest hosting old NMTB, which I am dying to watch again in my lifetime. Your old-NMTB-posting reminded me just how amazing and formative those old episodes were for me. Anyway, it got me thinking… I would love to hear yours!

as long as i'm allowed to answer this totally subjectively...! because the objectively most iconic panel show episodes are probably quite different to the ones i gravitate to especially for rewatching — and especially in this difficult recent climate 🫥

this choice is almost bizarre knowing me, a huge huge huge sean lock fan, but this episode of cats does countdown — without sean! and not even golden era, probably, whatever that is in my mind — is so ridiculous and chaotic and stupid that i've watched it about 1000 times. there's something very specific about the dynamic between jimmy, jon, roisin, and joe without sean; those four have been in quite a few episodes without sean and they're like actual children without an adult in the room: jon is goofier and completely lets go of the game, jimmy throws even more to roisin (we do not talk enough about what a fucking kick jimmy gets out of her), roisin and joe's insane sibling dynamic becomes next level. anyways—this episode, which includes rly funny mascots, glory hole, the fucking hoop game and joe eating an onion and jon eating peppers???, THE UNICORN, its sheer childishness just cracks me up every time :') (if we're gonna mention the golden age, 2.02 is very iconic — from rhod killin it and always arguing with jimmy to claude to nick x susie hahaha but i have sooooo many catsdown episodes i love love love)

i really love the episode of 8 out of 10 cats following jimmy's tax scandal. it's not one of my favourite panel shows in general, but the circumstances of the news and the discussion epitomised what the show was meant to be: panel show meets reality tv meets a comedy central roast. watching that live, as the news was running it so heavily that even the prime minister mentioned it, as the press and twitter were reacting to it... wild times. it holds up incredibly well — it's hilarious watching them rip him to shreds, because he deserves every word and they're having a ball doing it to him, and i really appreciate jon grounding the conversation in just how tax avoidance hurts their country and some of its hardest workers — a really interesting, engaging mix of comedy and anger and wit and disappointment and political commentary that is not only funny but strikingly relevant no matter how much time passes. like so, so many people who were so, so disappointed in jimmy, this was the foundation of his carrying the responsibility, shame, reflection, and growth that people wanted to see — and that he truly needed to. since then he's talked a lot about not only righting the wrong (in paying back what he owed in avoidance) but just how the system is so broken — and taking the least complicated, most honest road forward since.

now i want to pick 1000 different things this is why i don't make lists or rank things!!!!! while my instinct is to pick a big fat quiz, i'm actually gonna go top-level nostalgia and say this episode of buzzcocks when stephen fry was a guest. what can i say — simon, stephen, it was two intellectual, mildly bitchy homosexuals on a stacked panel including josie long, dominic cooper, and yet another skinny white rock man for simon to pretend he's not trying to flirt with. stephen saying "there is a history, in pop music, of recto-veginal insertion" and denouncing god, like, in the first 5 minutes? stephen doing the intros round?? did i mention history boys-era dominic cooper??? such a throwback!!! (not to cheat but this ep with josh groban & martin freeman is my runner up)

The First Rule of Fanfiction

1983

2nd period Social Studies class.  I slid the notebook to my friend Bethann, hoping the teacher wouldn’t notice.  Scratchy writing in cheap ballpoint pen interspersed with amateurish drawings of elaborate wedding dresses.

“Nick asked me last night,” it started.  The writing was my first fanfiction, Real Person Fiction (RPF), detailing Nick Rhodes’ proposal of marriage and my subsequent wedding planning.  There was going to be lots of lace, lots of giant sleeves, lots of eyeliner, and lots of hairspray.  And it was all going to be teal.  To offset Nick’s (at the time) bright orange hair.

While I was proud of my story, and of the accompanying illustrations, there was no way I wanted anyone but a select few people to see it.  I took a huge risk in showing Bethann during class, what if the teacher had taken it and read it?  Instant death by mortification.

2013

Sherlock S3 preview event, with a Q&A led by Caitlin Moran.  Cast and crew were in attendance, and Moran pulled out some fanfiction for the leads to read.  “Moran reportedly tricked stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman into reading aloud an explicit work of erotic Johnlock fanfic that Moran had gleaned (read: taken without permission) from the fan-run Archive of Our Own.  Moran assured the two actors that the excerpt she wanted them to read was purely innocent.  But as the actors read the scene aloud, as london-reviews reported, “it was clear it wasn’t as innocent as she kept making out.” (https://www.dailydot.com/unclick/sherlock-fanfic-caitlin-moran/) (emphasis mine)

But it was all in good fun, right?

Except it wasn’t.

"As for mildredandbobbin, the author of the now-famous fanfic, she was mortified. As condolences and support from horrified fans poured in, mildredandbobbin reacted in a heartfelt post on her Tumblr. 'I hope Caitlin Moran understands that she was hurtful and unprofessional, that in fact she used her position of privilege to belittle and humiliate,' she wrote. '[T]he one bit of contact I have with them, and it���s about humiliation and mockery.' She also deleted her fanart Tumblr out of fear that it would be more widely seen."

"Mildredandbobbin told the Daily Dot via Tumblr that she was 'appalled' that Moran had used her work 'for cheap laughs.' "

It was a highly inappropriate thing to do to them, it was extremely hurtful to me and it was terrifying for a lot of other writers in fandom to think it could have been their work being paraded around for ridicule and criticism. Fandom is supposed to be a safe space for women and we would appreciate it if journalists could respect the fourth wall and stop using our work to get a laugh during interviews.

Mildredandbobbin hasn’t shared any writing on Archive of Our Own since her work was stolen by Caitlin Moran.

In an announcement released on June 24, 2022, Channel 4 (@C4Press on Twitter) announced that it “has commissioned a new comedy entertainment series from RDF seeing celebrities reading steamy fan fiction acted out by a cast of lookalike puppets.” (https://www.channel4.com/press/news/mel-giedroyc-invites-celebrities-really-really-rude-puppet-show-wt-channel-4) 

While details are scarce, Ao3 users report having been contacted through comments like “Hi there, I’m currently working on a new TV show for all about fanfiction for a major UK broadcaster.  We really enjoyed reading your work, and would love to speak to you about it, and explain a bit more about our show and see if you’d be interested in being involved.” 

There are so many things wrong with that, starting with the fact that soliciting works in that manner violates Ao3’s terms of service.  Other fans have questioned whether or not permission will be given to use existing works, or if authors of the “commissioned” works (see C4 press release, linked above) will be paid. 

Many fanfiction authors are young, or queer, or identify as female, or are young, queer AND identify as female, and that adds another layer of wrongness to this proposed “collaboration.”  Youth is a time for exploration and discovery, and writing fanfiction is a great way to figure out who you are and how you occupy your place in the world.  Having your exploration put on a national stage like that can be devastating.  Thinking back to my own youthful and innocent wedding planning- I never in a million years pictured a scenario where Nick Rhodes himself would read it.  I would have burst into flames, and it would have caused embarrassment for him too I’m imagining.  No matter that I allowed Bethann to read it- I did not give permission for someone else to take it and show it around. 

Additionally, having seen Cumberbatch and Freeman’s reactions to “steamy fan fiction” about their characters, I can’t imagine it would have gone much better had they read “steamy fan fiction” about themselves (ie: mature or explicit RPF).  While it is widely believed that some stars (like Michael Sheen and Taika Waititi) seek out and read fan works in private, that’s a different dynamic than celebrities acting out stories with puppets on national TV.  According to The Sun, “viewers should bank on plenty of laughs, with celebs including Harry Styles and The Chase’s Anne Hegerty at the forefront of fans’ fantasies.” (https://www.thesun.ie/tv/8995543/really-really-rude-puppet-show-erotic-fan-fiction/) 

Oh.  Harry.  NOOOOOOO.

As I shared in response to a recent post about this topic, Fight Club rules apply.  The first rule of fanfic about actors is you never talk about fanfic to the actors.  Here’s hoping Channel 4 remembers the rule before it’s too late.

A new home for my Sherlock Holmes comics!

Hey all!

You may know my previous blog name as “ellieriggart”, but as you can see I’ve changed things up.

For those who don’t know me: I'm an Illustration student with the hopes of going into comics professionally after uni, so I hope to use this blog as a place to practice the art outside of my coursework, connect with fellow Holmesians and get feedback!

I've been a fan of Holmes since 2019 (when I was just gone 16) and my love for his universe has grown exponentially as l've gotten older. I love most of the adaptations out there, for various reasons, but I will always have the ACD canon close to my heart. However, I'm still new to this whole Tumblr thing, so please bear with as I fumble my way through

My comics on here may be loosely inspired by various adaptations, be it Brett's to the BBC's, however I want to explore the original canon and book pastiches that I enjoy (highly recommend 'Dust and Shadow' by Lyndsay Faye if you're looking for one!).

In terms of Sherlock-related artists, I am inspired by @contact-guy and @noodles-and-tea but Im constantly on the look for more- any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I'll be posting my first comic this week once I finish it, both on here and @comics_afoot on Instagram.

For now, here is a drawing I made of John last summer, as part of my final project for year 1.

This one was based off of Martin Freeman's portrayal, but simply for the fact that it was the only visual reference of Watson in his military regalia, loyal to the canon's era. I sketched whilst watching my favourite BBC Sherlock Episode- ‘Abominable Bride’.

This is Dr. John Watson happily embracing his mother in law Violet Holmes in the foyer of the Savoy hotel where on a medical gala event Sherlock gets a price for his achievements in shunt research.

John who always got along much better with Violet than her own son is truly pleased to see her there and hope Sherlock will be appreciate the fact that she tries to be proud and supportive.

7. Any worldbuilding you’re particularly proud of?

MmmYES. Although it has remained unfinished for a long, long, long, long, time, I was pretty happy with the start of a Sherlock Holmes '09/BBC Sherlock crossover fanfic titled "Mrs. Turner's Married Ones", where Jude Law Watson and Martin Freeman Watson meet in the cereal aisle of Tesco's.

9. How do you find new fic to read?

I usually go by recs from people who don't have shitty fandom takes that I've come to trust, taste-wise. That's why your 5 Fic Friday posts are really the best thing and I appreciate them. I also look at what writers who I enjoy are reading, if they've made their bookmarks public. There are also fandom resources for PoC that I check out to make sure I'm not missing any good stuff - but I haven't started on my Wakanda Forever fic binge - I'm saving that for later.

26. Would you rather write a fic that had no dialogue or one that was only dialogue?

Christ I hate reading only dialog, so I would rather chew my own face off than have to write it. No dialogue it is. I'd love the challenge of that.

hi penta, i know you don't really post about marble movies anymore but since you saw black panther wakanda forever i wondered what your thoughts were? i haven't seen it but i'm curious what you think about the quality and what they did with the chadwick boseman situation

marble movies... dhjds maybe if the studio cancelled all upcoming mcu projects to create a live action adaptation of jelle's marble runs their tomatometer wouldn't be dropping

there's an inherent exploitative edge to releasing bp:wf so soon after chadwick boseman's passing and i was really worried they'd disrespect him and his legacy, seeing as disney thought it sensible to hijack his social media for a twitter plug, but allowing his character to die with him and weaving that grief into the narrative feels like the right choice imo. like obviously idk his wishes for it or how personal this was for ryan coogler but the movie had so much love for him and for t'challa, and the amount of care and heart that went into it clearly went way beyond the mcu standard, so i can't bring myself to view its existence as a negative.

i feel like this movie could have done with a few more edits bc it did have the standard marvel issues of done before plot beats, gratuitous obligatory franchise building, wannabe meme oneliners - but it had less of them than most mcu projects! and i have nothing but praise for the visuals, costumes, soundtrack, set design, palette, fight choreography, etc. they even finally got their vfx to look like it was made by a billion dollar company and not a teenage hobbyist in a garage, which i hope means the vfx artists actually got a fair wage this time.

idk to what extent we're looking to marvel movies for representation these days but i can appreciate the fact that wakanda forever is centered around the emotional arc of a black african woman, something that's rare for hollywood blockbusters. the movie is at its best when it focuses on the characters and that's interesting considering they're mostly former side characters and new arrivals, though the performances certainly help carry it there. i thought namor was well done for such an inherently silly character & the returning characters are still as fun here as they were in the first one (except martin freeman and his evil girlfriend they can choke)

umm i'd say it's good overall if you don't already hate the mcu too much to enjoy anything they put out. i went ooh and aah at the right moments and spent at least 10% of the runtime bawling my eyes out, so that's fun

Hello, first and foremost, I would like to thank you for giving the community Under Virgin Circumstances. I have been a very big fan of Martin Freeman ever since. I have read many MANY fanfics with MF characters in them. But when I read UVC, your characterizations are very on point, and I can imagine them saying, thinking, and behaving in your UVC. What I can't get over is the audio you've provided. It promoted it to the very next level. I love reading fanfics, but hearing them in their "voices" hits very differently. Thank you so much, and please do not tire of giving quality fics.

I think you're the first friendly stranger (apart from the fic wives) to appreciate the audio enhancements.

I did longer ones for my Wednesday Afterburn series, and the UVC one would've been longer if not for my character limits on the AI (yes, I paid for access, but I'm poor af and can only afford the basic with limited characters per month 💀). If I ever get a better package heh package, I can do more in less time and I would LOVE to make the entire thing an audio book. Programming doesn't take me too long, I took less than a day to do the one I posted...ofc me being me, I did The Kiss in a day as well, but left the foley out for a couple months before I finished it up for publication.

I have lots of Jairo (and Fill It Black/Willmore) story to write (including their Gap Year), but I need to work on and finish the last chapter of Satisfying Afterburn within the next couple of months. Howeverrrr...I often get wild hares [sic] up my ass and will suddenly publish a surprise or an extra (like the UVC audio! TOTALLY out of the blue because I was curious to hear how good Freeman's voice would be and I was checking up on my AI sites for updates).

I've always thought that Freeman is a great actor, but dang all of that Johnlock stuff back in the day saturated my fyp (I wasn't in the fandom at all) and had me tuning him out for a bit. But now he's got the beard and 🫠💦 I just wish he had been directed to do more during the fantasy scene in MG. Not because of MY fantasies, but because of hers/Cairo's. She wrote some SEX in that thing and what we got was Lifetime 'erotica'...BUT I will say that this was very hott (the fluid movement of those fingers is 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥)

As far as characterization goes, thank you. I try. The popular media that grabs my attention tends to envelop my brain. My favorite thing to do is bring secondary characters to the forefront and tell their stories, since everyone has a story.

I love doing the audios and consider myself more of a multimedia fan fiction artist these days, I won't tire of that, but I do wish I had a better system (than programming each individual line and then having to save each one, then stringing them together...my Download folder is a mess of all of their voices)...thank you for noticing, and thank you for your readership. I feel so welcome in Freemanland thanks to Miller's Girl/UVC.
