Oughhhhhhh very very VERY specific to this au fearplay.

So. It's a game right. Self aware au. Game world, game rules, files, code, etc etc. GOOD. Also I'm making it canon for this au that Akira REALLY likes the game's music because of course he does. That is important for scenario 1 and 2. Sound-based horror is UNDERRATED.

3 scenarios.

Scenario 1: Takes place in the corrupted Palace. It is very corrupted for two reasons, one being that it isn't supposed to exist in the game by any means, and two that it's actually a fusion of two separate Palaces (being Akira's and the player's, actually it's a whole twist of the plot that it's Akira's Palace at all because there is so much specific overlap between Akira and the player that I will be more than happy to go into). Anyways, in the middle of the thing, right. Spiralling hallway, looks like a set designer for the game took acid, the squad is making their way down into the depths.

The lights dim ever so slightly.

A voice, echoing and large.

" And as you look to the horizon, not a cloud..."

All the Phantom Thieves freeze. The voice is... singing?

"But then stormy weather's caught you cold."

The voice drowns out the heartbeats in their ears as the group clusters together for safety.

"Seems like it crept up out of nowhere all around you..."

The lights have fizzled out just in time to hide the tendrils of pitch black goo creeping along the walls, covering everything but the darkened lights.

"It's not quite what you foretold..."

The squelching of slime is buried under the playful, chipper tone. A pair of blood red hands, each larger than any of the Thieves were tall, encircle the unaware adventurers in the darkness.

" You'll never see it-

"

The lights come on.

Scenario 2: Shadow Akira is loose in Shibuya after the fusion. The Phantom Thieves had run, but they were now painfully aware that reality was no longer their savior. As the crashing footsteps approach, they could hear... music? Soaring, grand guitar chords that make Player's eyes widen with recognition. But... it was discordant, distorted and combined with a rumbling bass that made the small bits of debris leap into the air with every beat.

" I-Is that... Yaldaboath's battle theme?!?"

Amidst the cacophony, a towering figure rises among the skyscrapers, thunderous, mocking laughter makes the asphalt beneath the Phantom Thieves quake with terror equal to their own.

Scenario 3: Less of a specific moment and more of a concept. Sure, big Akira, but also big everyone else. From Player's perspective. You see, getting snatched into the game made them itty bitty, and now EVERYTHING IS WORSE AND INFINITELY SCARIER. But also the entire squad's reactions to smol Player, including Akira's. Idk I think this has potential to maybe calm them down more as compared to them being normal sized. Like interacting with Futaba, for example, would be less nerve wracking when you're posed alongside her Featherman dolls than if you're having to perceive her as entirely a real, regular person after thinking she in no way shape or form existed in any kind of reality. Also Akechi would be generally gentler with them much faster than in his actual arc because Player was VERY much attached to him during their playthrough and he had NO clue how to process or handle that, but he cannot bring himself to be beefing with someone who's 6 inches tall and looks at him like 🥺. Yusuke's interactions would be interesting too, since he's in the same situation, just having an inverse reaction. He is very nice to them and gentle and lovey and the sole reason why they haven't just completely mentally shattered. I have found the PEAK of comedy in Maruki's reaction to this, that being "how the kentucky fried fuck am I supposed to give this child therapy when they are SO HECKIN SMOL"

AND HOLY DICKWAGON THE PALACE SEGMENTS WOULD BE SO SCARY. For context, in the Palace are shadows of the Phantom Thieves, who look normal at first but then turn into, for lack of a better term, waifu themed dnd mimics. YOU ARE SO SMALL. THE SHADOW THIEVES ARE HUGE AND SCARY AND OUT TO KILL YOU SPECIFICALLY AND THAT IS 5 MILLION TIMES EASIER NOW.

ooohh the akechi role… it’s hard to say who’d be able to play both sides convincingly!! maybe scara too, since he’s a schemer hm hm hm.… childe or heizou would both be so fun in that position tho…..

for the modern au, would you assign a character to igor or yaldabaoth at all? I honestly can’t think of anyone that would fit hhggh

for the sumeru au, both options for cyno’s palace would be so good 👀 technically he could be a phantom thief whilst also having a palace, if I remember right that was the case with maruki in p5r!

setaria, rahman, azar — potentially dottore too with no consequence, as I imagine a change of heart for one segment wouldn’t affect the others.

Scara would make a good Akechi! I tend to forget he exists, honestly. But I usually do my AUs as inspirations rather than direct lift and drop roles, so it doesn't have to be exact. Like, we wouldn't need to pick somebody specifically to be Ann, for example. But I mean Collei does have a striking resemblance to Futaba for the terms of this au.

For Sumeru, you're totally right! I think they'd definitely change Scara's (I mean seriously, his interlude quest was basically that anyways), and then maybe Dottore's after, but I imagine Dottore escapes them before they can.

I haven't played Royal but I do know what happens, and I always forget that Maruki had a Persona and a Palace. I think it really fits for Cyno to have one, because I love him and also angst. I really like the idea of his palace being prison, or maybe even a really fucked up laboratory (looking at that windblume lore). I also like it being something that shocks everybody, including Tighnari! Cyno's just really good at hiding his suffering (I mean fr that's all of my fics for him.)

-MEMENTOS HAS DIFFERENT MUSIC? I HEARD THIS WAS A THING BUT WOW. IT’S... WEIRD. the new track is nice but it doesn’t feel... fitting. it feels kinda unfinished. maybe it’s one of those tracks that get more layers as you go on? idk. the vibes feel way more aggressive and ominious than the regular mementos track -DARTS. BILLARDS. YES YES YES YES. KICHIOJI IS SO COOL AND FUN I LOVE ALL THE SHOPS AND NEW SHIT. AND JAZZ JIN! LET ME SEE . AKECHI. IM SO CLOSE TO MEETING HIM AUAUAUAUUGUHUH -makoto follows you way more in royal. i like that it’s funny -falling in love w/ ryuji again. he’s so sweet and excited to hang around akira it makes me so [various squishy custom emotes i use on discord] -the clean up event. i love the mini scenes with the thieves... ann impressing other students with her know-how; ryuji trying to do the right thing, akira getting vagued right in front of his salad, haru and mishima interacting. super cute! maruki’s little stint was also amusing. -s so we met kasumi in full finally. and i am......... so upset genuinely kasumi seems like a cool character with mildly interesting traits and vibes. she’s sweet about apologizing and thanking akira, kinda funny, excited to teach about gymnastics and other things, but GOOD LORD ITS SO HARD TO LIKE HER WITH THE GAMES WRITING / PUSHING HER IN YOUR FACE CONSTANTLY. JUST PICK ONE THING TO MAKE ME FEEL BAD ABOUT HER . OR FIND IMPRESSIVE. YOU JUST NEED ONE. EVERY TIME YOU ADD ANOTHER I GET LESS HOOKED. like. my jaw hit the floor when she FUCKING SUMMERSAULTED OFF OF A BENCH AND LEAPED IN THE AIR TO CATCH A. BALLOON??????????????????????? She’s So Quirky UwU. sharing your umbrella... hiding behind akira’s back... not wanting to be treated specially....all the rumors about how ooooh she’s so perfect and so cool and how the game at that moment wants you to feel bad like she has it rough. being put on a pedestal and outcasted like that does suck i won’t lie. but ohhh the scene just feels so tasteless for her to complain about it while akira, ceo of bad rumors, is just sitting there. and like, none of these scenes are Her fault, it’s just the bad writing regarding trying to shove her into a story that HAS NO ROOM FOR HER !! its just. she feels so cookie cutter. quirky athletic girl who’s different. i bet she has a comically large appetite too. i bet we’re gonna take her out somewhere and shes gonna eat like triple the amount that akira does and the game is gonna make a big deal out of it and i’m gonna hate it. i swear to god i’m trying to keep an open mind and like her but every time i start to think “you know? she’s not so bad!” the game pulls something that makes me want to punt her into a game that has room for her to breathe. and it’s only going to get worse! on the cusp of the kaneshiro arc is when the thieves character arcs start to get cramped and . idk when kasumi becomes a thief but i assume its closer to endgame (probably sae’s palace i bet. im gonna bet on that because it’s the worst fucking palace for her to join in on so ofc that’s the one she’ll join on) which is going to muddle it even worse. at least she has 3rd sem to get her development since... i assume that’s going to relate to her heavily due to both being royal’s poster child. but it just puts a bad taste in my mouth. im sure the other thieves will get some development in 3rd sem also but i just man i don’t trust this shit at least strikers adds onto the arcs nicely.

– Overall opinion of them

Ok I fucking love this boy, of course, but I hate the way most ppl in fandom portray and view him? He’s one of the most popular characters but I always hate when he’s reduced to like, funny pancake boy, or charming suave prince, or Ren’s angsty boyfriend or whatever. He works best when you see him as a narrative foul to Ren and a sort or alternative protagonist, as well as just a completely feral kid with so many issues to work through dhdkfnfk. Sadly fandom content really colors my view of him at times so it’s a hard balance to strike, especially for a character I think is so neat

– Gender/sexuality headcanons

This one is interesting bc I know transmasc Akechi is a fairly popular HC for LGBT ppl but I really like the idea of transfem Akechi who has to hide that part of themself for social clout, and who never becomes comfortable enough during the game to explore that part of their identity, and doesn’t until after spending time at rehab post-game. That’s kinda why I took that route with Blake, albeit differently dhdkfj. The lack of like, content or support for this HC is why I don’t really push it or explore it, usually still using he/him and such, and also why I primarily focus on that as a facet of Blake. Sexuality is hard too bc I don’t think shipping him with anyone in-game works very well. There’s the obvious like, vague romantic tension and undertones with Ren in the game but I don’t ever see it as a romantic relationship nor do I think it would be healthy if it were djdjfjf and I think Akechi knows that too. I think it would take therapy before he can start sorting those feelings out dndkfn as it stands he already has trouble forming bonds with others so it’s not easy to say, even for him.

– Favorite moment in canon

God there are so many good scenes with this asshole dhdkfj. I think the boss fight, and in particular the transformation into black mask and that reveal, are really cool? The fact that it plays Awakening during the black mask / Loki reveal and then Will Power during the subsequent fight is just so good. There’s also the scene in Royal where he and Ren talk to Maruki before giving him the calling card, the way Maruki attempts to use his life as a shield and he just outright rejects it.

– Favorite moment in a fanwork

Dhdjdjdj this would get into spoilers but there’s a planned Deja Vu development with Akechi that vane has told me abt that I’m really really excited for. As for the existing stuff tho, fortunately there’s vane’s entire “Strikes One Through Three” fic that’s just perfect at addressing this characterization, and also, I’m really fond of the Deja Vu scene where he has lunch with Kasumi and Ren dndkfn.

– Favorite line, in canon or otherwise

Gosh it’s unfair how many killer lines this kid gets. Of course my current discord status is “Justice? Righteous!? Keep that shit to yourselves!” Which is just SO good and so well delivered in-game, but there’s also “I’m a little offended that you think so little of me that you expected me to be dead” and “are you really so spineless that you’d fold over some bullshit, trivial threat to my life?” Dhdjfjf.

– Characters I love seeing them interact with

The big one is OBVIOUSLY Ren bc thematic foils, but there are so many smaller relationships that go unexplored. Him and Ann are so interesting bc they’re ultimately very similar, but they’ve taken very different paths in life both emotionally and in terms of their affiliations. There’s also his criminally underdeveloped (in canon) relationship with Kasumi, who’s basically his only genuine friend before the game starts? He also has some really interesting parallels with Futaba but sadly the whole “killing her mom” thing makes it hard to address those, y’know, dndkfn.

– Last thing before sleeping headcanons

This kid cannot sleep well and tends to work himself to exhaustion until all he can do is pass out, avoiding as much time alone with his thoughts as possible. After awhile he just quickly prepares for bed and collapses, and just crashes.

– Sleeping habits headcanons

He has so many nightmares, sources of panic and so much fear around vulnerability that sleeping is an ordeal for him every time. He has to take as many precautions as possible and even then he’s prone to waking up every 10 minutes gasping or screaming. He’s never really gotten a good night’s sleep.

– First thing after waking up headcanons

To minimize grogginess and vulnerability, he immediately gets up, puts on a pot of coffee, and gets dressed in casual clothes to start the day, trying to seamlessly transition into being awake.

– Favorite locations headcanon

He’s got these weird, kind of bittersweet bonds with the places his mom took him, and tends to kind of avoid them for awhile, not wanting to confront those memories or taint those places until he’s better. I think the jazz club is actually somewhere he just kind of chose one day, liked, and became a regular. It slowly dawned on him that this favorite place wasn’t really different from those favorite places, and he’d spent so long away that maybe they aren’t his favorite places anymore. There’s a sour feeling once he recognizes that.
