What If Season 2 Ep6 Discussion/Rant Thing

First things first, that was fucking amazing. I loved this episode so much and I'm confused at its attachment to Marvel yet delighted that a story like this is being told by such a popular franchise. (I know not everyone will see What If? but it's good publicity regardless)

I can easily seeing this being a standalone story someone wanted to make and it was shoved into an episode of What If? There are the smallest of threads connecting this story to the other Marvel properties, which for one is interesting and makes sense due to the limitless possibilities of multiversal storytelling. It's just a big surprise to see this in what was originally supposed to be seeing our "favourite" Marvel characters in different flavours and situations.

It found it a bold move to make this entire story in its original native speaking languages. For the Mohawk people and the Spanish. I do tend to watch with subtitles on so it did not detract form the experience for me. Fortunately, they have a version accessible to the blind, an audio description version. At least with the Netflix I'm using, it might vary with regions.

Additionally, they worked with members of the Mohawk people which puts a great smile on my face knowing they consulted the actual people before making a story about them that tackles the problems of the Spanish's "exploration" of pre-colonialism America.

TLDR; I loved this episode but was confused by its relation to any Marvel properties at all. It could have been its own film but I'm glad a story like this was told regardless and with a big company backing it.

okay wait i also need to share my thoughts about echo because i Have Some. i actually loved the direction they went, big fan of grounded plots and very local problems. not everything needs to be a multiversial threat like disney thinks it should. i think comparing disney marvel gore to netflix marvel gore is unfair, although i was disappointed by some of the fights (ESPECIALLY the ending one, that was barely a fight).

also, MAKE FISK SCARY AGAIN. ain't NO way he got his ass beat twice by the same person within five months. this is the same that chopped a mf's head off with a CAR DOOR. during his SECOND EVER APPEARANCE. absolutely no disrespect to maya she's a queen and a badass, but she's gotta marinate a little longer before she can realistically beat the kingpin.

i think the whole show actually would've benefited from more episodes. originally it was supposed to have eight (?) episodes but it got shortened, you could definitely tell. istg this formula with "short shows high stakes" is hindering these stories.

alaqua cox served though, loved her acting. lots of subtle strength and sarcasm. she didn't need to prove herself, she was just cool. i wish maya's family got more development though, i feel like we barely got to know them.

overall it's kinda mid, but not in a way i'm upset about. it's a nice change of pace, sets up some neat storylines (mayor fisk is gonna be CRAZY), and acts as a test run for moving forward with more.. intense projects (please please PLEASE go harder with the violence on born again 🙏🙏)

just saw a headline that said "mcu's season 4 of daredevil needs to take lessons from thor ragnarok"

i dont know about you guys, but personally? i dont need matt to throw out a family friendly gag every minute, or for him and frank to argue about doing a "get help" style distraction for easy laughs, sandwiched inbetween 6 callbacks to previous mcu films and a panoramic circle shot showing each of the defenders in an action pose. i dont want that.

for all the main mcu has in its big explosions followed up by clever one liners, they're severely lacking in the things that made the defenders so good - their realness.

i dont want a family friendly squeaky clean daredevil, i want a matt murdock that is so flawed and angry and irrevocably broken by all that he has seen and experienced, a matt murdock that is so deliciously and utterly human that it hurts to see.

it hurts to watch him start fight after fight - many he knows he can't possibly win, he knows the odds are stacked against him, but he fights anyway. he fights because he knows that if he doesn't go out every night and save the little girls lured into alleyways by strange creepy men, and if he doesn't fight against the corrupted system condemning innocent men - then who will?

personally, that's the daredevil i want to see.
