favorite callbacks/foreshadowing payoff in A Power Unbound that made yell "oh goddammit" at my book

MY MOST SATISFYING "OH GODDAMMIT" MOMENT. FULL ON HAD ME PACING UP AND DOWN MY APARTMENT GOING "OH MY GOD THEY ACTUALLY DID IT, THE CRAZY SON OF A BITCH, THEY DID IT"

it wins #1 because this line always made me SO suspicious, but I also thought it was such a longshot. between the suspiciously specific phrasing of "blow up" and alan calling the lockroom easy to misuse in the same scene, my prediction was actually that the bad guys were going to do some fuckshit with the lockroom, because ART introduced us to the concept of "using hair to channel magic" and having a room full of everybody's hair seemed... uh, bad.

so I was just wrong enough to be delightfully shocked and just right enough to feel so satisfyingly smug. 10/10 felt terrific.

"adelaide tapping her ring" is SUCH a sneaky little detail. because she's tapping her ring all throughout a marvelleous light, and then sURPRISE it was the contract piece all along, beautiful bit of same-book foreshadowing, well done everyone go home

so when it showed up again in a power unbound, I was like "aw cute. I like that she's still got that little habit, even though it's not a Plot Relevant Foreshadowing Moment anymore, what a nice detail"

and then adelaide pseudo-flipped me off with her ring finger and went SURPRISE, GOT YOU TWICE, WHAT WAS THAT ABOUT MY PLOT RELEVANT RING?

this one didn't take me by surprise, but it's exactly what I love about reading a careful and deliberate writer.

this is in the same scene where we find out about jack's secretbind. so when I read it, I thought "okay well, we just found out he has A Mouth Thing. but he subconsciously touches his leg as well as his mouth, so probably he has A Leg Thing too." and then did a quick "probably from the war, right? seems most likely" and felt confident I knew that Jack had some kind of leg injury long before A Power Unbound even came out

and it's just SO FUN, because when you have a really good writer like this, you get the absolute joy as a reader of reading One Single Sentence and going "I see you, I know that means something." it's delightful, it's my favorite kind of puzzle, it's so rewarding

the way robin gets super uncomfortable with the penhallick crowd gossiping about what happened to jack and then changes the subject to magical people born into unmagical families who never discover their magic

the way jack and alan are linked together through this one worldbuilding-during-dinner conversation from two books ago. beautiful. profound.

and finally. my grand final of moments that made me go OH!! FUCK!!—

that's the first mention of jack by name, ever, at all, in the entire series.

that is the very first detail we ever learn about him.

AND THEN HE DID IT AGAIN, AFTER ALL THOSE YEARS OF NO MAGIC, AND I WAS SO PROUD, AND I LOVE HIM SO MUCH, AND ALSO I HUCKED MY BOOK ACROSS MY BED.

HIS FIRST MENTION AND HIS FIRST ACT OF MAGIC AFTER OVER A DECADE, crying, crying forever, we have come full circle

#a power unbound #the last binding #the benefit of being a Jack Stan is that I........ may have reread every scene/mention of him in AML and ART like. a lot #a lot a lot. I had a long wait okay?#I had to savor every little crumb of detail #enough that these things were just emblazoned in my brain #and I was yelling oH!!!!!!! so goddamn much #and of course there's a milliondy other wonderful throwbacks because GOOD STORY STRUCTURE #but these are My Favorite and the ones that were the most satisfying to me personally

"You guys want anything?" Nick offered as he stood from the couch.

He was about halfway through a movie night with Charlie and Tao, which meant the snacks were in desperate need for a refill. The other two boys shook their heads, with Tao pausing the show politely to wait for Nick to return.

Innocently, Charlie shifted towards the controls and hit the play button. The act alone was probably enough to clue Tao in on Charlie's mischievous demeanor, but the cheeky grin on Charlie's face made his intent obvious.

"You in a mood today or something?" Tao quipped, undoing Charlie's menace.

While usually that alone would shut Charlie up with a blush on his face, today was not one of those days. The boy gave a sneaky laugh to himself, before reaching over to play the movie again.

This time it was Nick who caught him.

"Oi!" Nick half-chuckled, giving Charlie a soft pinch to the ribs before sitting down next to him.

Charlie yelped out a singular giggle before resting his head against his boyfriend.

"You know what really gets him?" Tao asked with a smirk. "His-"

As Tao gave his answer Nick interjected at the same time. Determined to show off his Charlie knowledge and bond with a potential ally in the 'Tickle Charlie' task.

"-armpits." //// "Hips!"

As Charlie's cheeks burned and he hid his face in his arms, Nick and Tao stared at each other. While Tao was wondering what on earth Nick was on about (cause nothing was more ticklish than Charlie's armpits), Nick was shocked at the mere idea that Tao had come to any other conclusion than Charlie's hips being his death spot.

"Do you not know about Charlie's armpits?" Tao said breathlessly.

Nick let out a noise halfway between a gasp and a scoff. "Have you never tickled Charlie's hips?"

The boy in question could feel butterflies tussling in his stomach at the talk.

"I've never had to! His armpits do the job just fine!"

"Well you're missing out, he can't handle his hips."

"Fine, I'll prove it to you!" Tao sat upright from his slouched position and pulled Charlie towards him.

"Tao wait no!" Charlie screeched with a smile.

"Not now Charlie the adults are talking." Tao shushed him, a teasing tone effortlessly slipping it's way through his words. "We'll try both spots and see which is worse."

Nick grinned with a nod. "Alright. You go first."

Tao gave an indignant look. "So you can capitalize on all my hard work? I think not."

"Guys plehehease!" Charlie giggled, squirming in Tao's hold.

"Fine, we both go at the same time." Nick offered.

Charlie's eyes widened. "Two against one? No way!"

"Works for me." Tao grinned, swiftly swapping his hands from holding Charlie's arms to squeezing under them.

Charlie squealed, kicking his legs against the couch cushions and throwing his head from side to side.

"Interesting..." Nick hummed, a sly smile on his face. "I still reckon this is worse."

As he spoke, Nick rubbed smooth circles on Charlie's hip bones. No matter how much Charlie begged or laughed, Nick let his thumb push continuously against every sensitive nerve around the joint.

Poor Charlie was already halfway to losing it at this point. His usual bubbly giggles of early-stage tickles were full blown cackles already, and it didn't look like things were going to get any easier.

"That's definitely getting to him, but if you want to make him squeak-" Tao began, maneuvering his hands lower.

"Nononono Tahao!"

"Shush Charlie, I'm trying to educate your boyfriend!"

Nick pulled a face of playful outrage while Tao began clawing against poor Charlie.

"NAHAHA TAHAHAO!" Charlie squealed, high pitched yelps breaking through his laughter.

"-you've got to go for his ribs." Tao said loudly over Charlie's desperate begging.

Nick chuckled, retracting his hands from his boyfriend's waist. "That's great and all, but I know Charlie has a real weak spot juuuust-"

"NIHIHIHICK!"

"Hey!" Nick grumbled, spidering a hand up the side of Charlie's neck playfully. "Don't interrupt me when I'm winning the argument."

Tao rolled his eyes. "Anyways, what's this about Charlie's weakness?"

Nick grinned as Charlie began begging once more. "It's riiiiight... here."

Nick let his fingers ghost under Charlie's shirt, right on that torturously sensitive spot between his bellybutton and pantline.

With the agonizing claws on his ribs, and Nick's unbearably gentle whisps against his stomach, Charlie dissolved. His energy was sapped away by the fingers of his two favourite people, and he barely had the breath left to laugh.

"Guhuhuhuys plehehease!" Charlie giggled out, gently twisting away from whichever of Tao's hands felt particularly ticklish at that moment.

"Hmmm..." Tao muttered to Nick, completely ignoring the mess beneath him. "It seems to work alright, but I still maintain my role as superior tickler."

"Tahahao!" Charlie blushed, a flustered grin plastered on his face.

"Pfft." Nick scoffed playfully. "Look at him, he's jelly beneath these hands."

To illustrate his point, he wriggled his fingers menacingly at Charlie - who practically combusted at the sight.

Finally, after an age of tickling, 'accidental' teasing, and begging, Tao and Nick released their little guinea pig and let him flop against them on the couch.

"So Charlie, who's the best tickler?" Tao smirked down, wiping some of the hair from Charlie's forehead.

Charlie giggled in response, covering his face with an arm and shaking his head.

"No answer huh?" Nick laughed. "I guess it's a draw..."

Tao nodded. "We'll have to try again next time."

Amidst the high of post-tickle bliss, Charlie felt his stomach flip at the concept of another round of torture. Yes it was absolute agony being at the mercy of the two people who know him (and his ticklishness) the best, but he also couldn't deny just how happy it made him feel.

Would he survive another session? Who knows.

But that was a problem for future Charlie.

It May Be Winter Outside (But in My Heart It's Spring)

"Zelda! Princess Zelda!" Steps nearly too big for Link’s short legs carried him through the corridor toward Princess Zelda's room, Impa following with equally wide strides. Bright, almost white, light filtered through the narrow windows of the castle, highlighting them like a flipbook.

With a final leap, Link reached the door and slammed two small fists against the wood. "Zeeeelda!"

Chuckling, Impa caught up and opened the door for him. He burst inside, reinforcing his calls with his cupped hands. On his way up the stairs, Impa grabbed him by the collar and put him down next to her. With a pout, he met her red eyes.

"We respect our princess' modesty. You're not allowed in her bedroom. Nobody apart from the maids and I have permission to enter her personal chambers."

Link's eyes grew and grew. "But I was already—"

"Shhh," she hushed him.

"But, Impa, I climb up to her to read books at night, the vines are no prob—"

A calloused, gentle thumb swept over his lips. "Nobody apart from me and the maids are ever in her bedroom, understood?"

Rummaging sounds came from above, followed by Zelda shouting, "I'm coming!"

Impa turned her attention back to Link. He bristled, hopping from one foot to the other, getting on his tiptoes, and pulling at her arm. "But the other day the tutors told me I mustn't tell lies!"

Impa sighed and patted the soft fabric of his hat. The kid swung a sword more proficiently than most soldiers, but couldn’t get behind the concept of keeping quiet. "It's not a lie, okay? Just a secret between me, you, and Princess Zelda."

"What about me?" Zelda rushed down the marble stairs leading to her bedroom, the sash of her dress and the accompanying belt whirling behind her. She hadn’t even taken the time to close it.

Immediately, Link had forgotten about his little moral conflict. He grabbed Zelda by the shoulders, shaking her small frame, shouting, “EVERYTHING IS WHITE! EVERYTHING IS WHITE OUTSIDE! AND THAT IS BECAUSE OF…!” He gasped for air, yelling a last time, "SNOW!"

"Oooooh! Marvelous!" Zelda grabbed his shoulders as well and they spun around like a merry-go-round. Once, twice, round and round it went, and she shouted, "Marvelous!", and he shouted, "Snow!"

Out of breath and dizzy, they broke apart.

"Oooh," Zelda said and deflated, her gaze jumping to Impa who observed the two with crossed arms and an amused look. "We have lessons today, right? Does that mean we can't go out?"

"Of course, you doofus! That's why Impa let me come here!" Link exclaimed, adjusting his hat.

"Link, we don't call the princess 'doofus'." Impa scolded and lifted his chin with her index.

Another pout found its way onto his face. "But she calls me doofus, too!"

"It's okay," Zelda said. "I don't mind."

Impa sighed quietly. "No, it's not okay, unfortunately. Well, it would be best if you both just stop. That way it's easier for the two of you. Deal?"

The two kids rolled their eyes but nodded.

"Fine. Your tutor is from Castle Town, I don't expect him to be here before midday. So, Link is right, we came here to fetch you. But!" She bent down at eye level and motioned them closer. "If the King or one of the other tutors catch us, we'll be in trouble. So, who can be sneaky like a Sheikah?"

"Me, me!" They jumped up and down, stretching their arms in the air.

"Okay." Impa laughed. "But not like this. You're alerting the whole castle."

Hands flew to mouths, stifling every noise that threatened to creep out.

A wild ruffling of coats and boots and scarves later, the three left the room. Zelda and Link trailed behind Impa, tiptoeing with their winter boots through the corridors in the direction of the gardens. Most courtiers passed them with a low bow toward Princess Zelda and eyebrows raised in amusement.

They passed the library, separated from the corridor only through colorful glass panels. Impa went ahead. Again and again, she flicked her wrist, a gesture hardly detectable under her wide winter cloak, and they sprinted toward the next column, pressing themselves into the shadow behind. Snippets of a conversation rang through the glass — their other tutors, no doubt. The distance between the last pillar and the safe corner was the biggest, unfortunately. Impa waved, and they darted toward her, only to be met with someone rounding the corner.

"Lady Impa! Good morning. I hope to find you well despite the unruly weather?"

Link and Zelda changed an alarmed look, ducking behind her back. Another tutor!

Impa laughed like adults do when something is wrong, slightly too loud and with exaggerated gestures. She put her hand on the arm of the confused teacher, turning him toward the entrance of the library. Link and Zelda shifted behind her back, mirroring her motion as if they were tied together by invisible strings.

"Oh, I've been fine, thank you. It's my day off, but I still plan to check the gardens for damage from the snow." She opened the buttons of her cloak so that it fell open, giving the two children behind her better cover.

"Ah, how unfortunate. Not that it's your free day, of course, but I hoped you could tell me where to find Princess Zelda and Link. Owlan won't make it here until noon thanks to the snow and I thought we could just swap our lessons so that they don't miss anything. I'll try Link's room next."

"Of course." Impa kept the parting words short, biting the lie that waited on her tongue back. Not in front of the kids. They turned, but didn't make it far.

"Oh, and Lady Impa?"

"Hm?" A jerk at the coat flipped one side up, hiding Zelda and Link just in time.

"Your cloak suits you well. So mystic with the red Sheikah Eye on the back."

"Thank you, thank you. I will give regards to the seamstress. But now I have to go. Until then!"

Finally around the corner, all three of them pressed their hands to their open mouths, exchanging wide-eyed looks. Impa was the first to recover and ushered them out of the dangerous zone. A staircase and two other corridors followed, but the hallways close to the gardens were traditionally less busy in winter.

Outside, Zelda burst. "Impa! How did he not see us?! You were incredible!"

"Yeah, and I think you lied, too, didn't you?" Link crossed his arms in front of his chest. "I mean, maybe not a lie, but you didn't tell him that we were right there."

Impa bopped his nose. "No, I didn't tell him. You have years of lessons to come, one missed morning won't affect your education. And…" She grabbed two fistfuls of snow from the hedge behind her back and dropped them on their heads. Sputtering, they cleaned themselves. "We are learning today. Just not what your tutors have scheduled."

"And what would that be?" Zelda asked, pulling the winter version of her headpiece deeper.

Impa grinned wickedly, forming another snowball behind her back. It was a rather poor thing, quickly squashed together with one hand, but it had to do. "What we'll learn today? How fast you two can run, of course!"

Zelda shrieked, diving behind the next bush, but Impa had planned to take Link by surprise all along.

Link, however, despite his young age and small frame, was a skilled warrior. He wasn't fooled twice and had his own snowball ready that he threw at Impa.

It wasn't long before Link and Zelda had teamed up, using the maze as cover. Their small height gave them an advantage in defense that Impa couldn't quite compensate for in strength. Zelda's aim was also terribly true and she managed to get a lot of hits on her.

"Ok, ok, you won!" Impa raised her hands. The giggles behind the bush only increased and pushing all her warrior instincts down, she approached them.

"Haha!" A big load of snow rushed down Impa's body, coloring her silver-blue cloak white and seeping into the thin fabric of her armor underneath. Oh, she should have remembered buttoning it up again!

The two little minxes came out from behind the hedge, shaking Link's coat free from snow. They had used it as some kind of catapult.

"Well played." Impa grinned. Armor that was a little damp wouldn't kill her. "Ok, now we'll take a little break. Who knows how to make a snow fairy?"

"A snow fairy?" A pair of big round eyes looked at her. "I've seen a lot of fairies in Termina, small and big, but no snow fairy."

"In Hyrule, there are no snow fairies either!" Zelda pushed herself to her full height (which happened to be a few inches higher than Link's).

"You can't see them because you have to make them first," Impa said mysteriously, laughing, and guided them to a spot that was used as a patio if not snowed in.

"Oh, look! It's completely untouched! How beautifully the snow glitters! No, don't you dare, Link!" Zelda snatched Link's sleeve and pulled him back, his feet close to disturb the perfect blanket of snow. "Doof—" She cut herself off, receiving a wink from Impa as a reward.

"We're making the snow fairies here. Look."

Impa turned around, her rear end nearing the snow, much to the children's amusement. She flashed them a grin, opened her arms wide, and dropped back into the white mass. The powdery snow fell onto her head and her shoulders, but she wasn't bothered in the slightest. Her arms went up and down, up and down, pushing the snow aside.

"That looks like fun, but where's the fairy?" Link hissed to Zelda out of the corner of his mouth.

Impa stretched her hand out so that Zelda could help her up. "Here's the fairy."

"Whe—oh! You're right! A fairy with wings!" Zelda hopped from one foot to the other. "I want to make one, too!"

"Of course. Let me help you so that you disturb the snow as little as possible."

They shifted around and first Zelda and then Link made a smaller snow fairy next to Impa's.

"They… they look a bit like…" Link stared at the ensemble, eyes distant and shoulders slack. Impa crouched down to him, wrapping her arm around his slim shoulders that had carried too much weight too early. "Like what?" She inquired softly.

"Like the big fairy who gave me the pink sword after I helped her find the stray fairies." He swallowed and Impa tugged him under her chin.

"Termina?" Zelda mouthed and Impa nodded, stroking his back. Link sniffed and snuggled into her damp coat, taking a moment to fight off the demons that the memories of his quest brought him. Zelda eyed them uncertainly, but then, she joined them and hugged him from behind, leaning her head against his back.

"I hear someone," Impa murmured and ushered them to stand up again. "Oh, it's your father, Zelda, the King," she hissed through her teeth. "Link, come here, kneel beside me, and keep your voice down."

The snow crunched under the heavy steps of the King and his guards. Link did as told and kept his eyes down. He was happy to have Impa by his side; he had gotten in trouble for not following protocol quite a few times since he moved to the castle. The rules were just so confusing!

"Lady Impa. I must say it surprises me to see you and my daughter here. I believed her to be studying with her tutors."

"We are studying, Your Majesty. I taught the children defense strategies in difficult terrain. In combat, it is necessary to take advantage of the environment to save precious resources." She tapped Link's shoulder. "Link. Show His Majesty what we trained. Get a hit on one of his guardsmen without anyone discovering you."

Now that was something Link didn't need to hear twice. Swift like a weasel, he disappeared into the heck maze, making little to no noise in the snow.

The guards, half amused, half prideful, looked around, but Link was nowhere to be seen. The King frowned, but then his face lit up and he took a few steps backward. He winked at Zelda. "I trust your friend's aim, but better be sure."

"Oh, don't you worry, father. Link is more skilled than he lets on."

Link grinned on his way up to the rose arch spanning the entrance of the patio, taking the conversation as a welcomed distraction from the snow drizzling from the metal. The guards' eyes still roamed the heck maze — it was nearly too easy.

LOVE.

Being the woman she was, Natasha had grown to have quite a handful of memories ingrained into her mind — some so deep they left a handprint on her soul. Some were sad, others angry, and some happy. However there was one particular memory that soared above the rest. It was one of the lucky ones that painted a masterpiece of sunset colors on her soul, and it was the only one to grace her heart. That memory was one that always looped a smile on Natasha’s face, and it was when she met Y/N.

Also known as, the love of her life.

It had been a normal day. Nothing out of the ordinary. Tony had been talking about recruiting a protege - which the rest of the Avengers were against, because he was most definitely going to screw that up - who he’d teach about his technology. Little did she know - he actually did it! His protege was a young woman a couple years younger than Natasha who was not only mentored in the Iron Man and Avengers’ technology, but was a skilled mechanic.

The spy learned all of this that afternoon when she had come back to Tony and Pepper’s house to drop Pepper off and spotted him and Y/N in the garage.

“Tony?” She asked as she approached them, eyes furrowed in slight confusion.

Tony snapped his head up from his post where he was working on the coding for an update to Peter’s A.I, Karen. “Nat!” He said, his friend’s presence causing him to smile. He swung his legs over his workbench and jogged over to meet her. Y/N only spared a glance at Natasha, before resuming her work on Tony’s car.

“Who’s this?” Natasha asked, lowering her tone and gesturing to the mechanic with a nod. She couldn’t help how the butterflies began to swarm in her stomach, because the woman was absolutely gorgeous (and had muscles that even made Natasha a little jealous).

“Oh!” Tony said, glancing over his shoulder. “That’s Y/N! She’s my protege.”

Natasha blinked in slight surprise before she smirked. “Are you forcing her to fix your car?” She asked, crossing her arms.

Tony chuckled and shook his head. “No. She was actually going to go on break but saw that there was a problem with my car and offered to fix it. Turns out she’s a mechanic!” He clarified.

Natasha nodded, thinking, but before she could complete her train of thought, Tony lightly grabbed her arm and brought her over to Y/N to meet her.

“Hey, Y/N/N! This is Natasha Romanoff, my friend. Nat, meet Y/N,�� Tony said before stepping aside.

Y/N’s head snapped up and she almost lost her balance. “Wait-” she said, glancing at Natasha before her eyes widened and her jaw dropped. “You’re Black Widow! Oh my god, Tony told me all about you. You’re such an amazing fighter.” She stood up, smiling.

Natasha nodded, chuckling. She liked this one already. “Thank you,” she said.

Just then a loud beeping noise interrupted their conversation - and Tony whirled around to see Karen springing to life. “Let me go fix that - you two carry on,” he said, quickly getting right back into the zone and continuing his coding.

Natasha just shook her head in amusement before turning her attention back to Y/N. “It’s very nice of you to work on Tony’s car,” she commented, leaning against said car.

Y/N shrugged. “Yeah, well, why not?” She replied, continuing the small talk but catching a view of herself in the car window. “Shit.” She went to rub the grease stains on her forehead but only ended smudging it since there was grease on her hands.

Natasha quickly scanned the room with her eyes and when she spotted a clean cloth, snatched it up and offered it to Y/N. “Don’t worry - it just shows you’re a hard worker and . . . it’s cute,” she reassured her. If Y/N didn't return the feeling, Natasha reminded herself she could just brush it off as being her usual sneaky self, but a large part of her hoped that Y/N would return the feelings.

Y/N lightly scoffed, taking the cloth and mumbling a “thank you”. “Oh, I didn't know that. Guess I should get grease on myself more often,” she said casually, wiping her forehead. Natasha shifted the weight between her legs, thinking that Y/N might not know that she was flirting with her.

She had to try again.

The two fell into silence as Y/N resumed her work. Natasha watched her, feeling entranced. As time went by the redhead noticed more cute things about her. How her hair curls lightly bounced and framed her face. Or the freckles that dotted her nose. Time seemed to flow by like a breeze on the beach.

After a bit, Y/N leaned against the hood of the car, taking deep breaths. She was tired and sweaty, but Natasha didn't care. She leaned against the hood of the car as well as Y/N grabbed her water bottle and took a huge gulp. When she put it down, she ended up bumping her knee into the car and instinctively stumbling.

Natasha, who was always alert, easily grabbed her by the arms and caught her before she could fall. Now steadied, Y/N caught her breath and met Natasha’s eyes, just now recognizing that that warm, soft touch was her palms.

The two held their gaze for a couple moments. Time seemed to stand still and everything else fell alway. Y/N got a first hand look at just how stunningly pretty the Black Widow was, and Natasha felt herself captivated by her eyes, unable to look away even if she wanted to.

“Kiss already!” Tony’s yell of encouragement jarred Y/N and made Natasha send a sharp glare his way. But neither of them moved.

“Well?” Natasha asked, raising her eyebrows.

Y/N took a breath, in bliss, and then - not believing what she was doing - leaned forward. Natasha met her halfway and they captured each other’s lips in a meaningful kiss. Natasha pulled Y/N a little closer and Y/N curled her fingers around Natasha’s hands.

After a couple of seconds, they both departed. Y/N was in a daze. That kiss was probably the best kiss she ever had. Natasha was able to snap back to normal a bit quicker and smiled, the ghost of the feel of Y/N’s lips on hers causing a small ache.

“Is there grease on me?” Natasha asked in a whisper after a moment.

Y/N giggled, and then nodded. “Probably,” she answered, also whispering.
