It's the remnants that are the worst of everything. Hook’s phone holds the debris of the implosion like a time capsule, and he needs to just erase everything: erase the text threads, erase the photos, erase the call logs from 2 AM. He needs to, and he doesn't, because somehow, that's the final drop that will make their broken friendship official. It's not the damn belt, but all the months of them laid bare, sharp as glass.

Hook lays in the hotel room, temples throbbing. He's furious. He's furious, and embarrassed and hurt, but more than anything else, he's fucking devastated.

And because the overlap of everything leads to the poorest of judgment choices, he opens up their text thread. Hundreds of replies. Hundreds of back and forths. Hook stares at the screen, and finally, finally, types: I hate you.

He never gets a reply, but then again, he never expected to. A week goes by, and the shards remain in Hook’s stomach. He busies himself with other things; meets up with old friends, gets new ink, spends time with his mom. But at the core, the betrayal is the one thing he goes back to every single night as he stares up at the ceiling.

There are so many things he now avoids. Taylor Swift, for one, since Jack always had some bullshit song of hers playing and now Hook has to fight back dizziness each time he hears her voice on the radio. Pineapple pizza, because Jack is a heathen and a traitor to humanity for eating it in the first place. The entire Marvel cinematic universe, since they had marathoned the whole damn thing across months of sterile hotel rooms.

Hook grabs for his phone, thumbs into the messages. Writes, I hate you so fucking much.

It pops up Read within moments, and then sits there, flaying Hook from within.

Another week. Another set of endless nights. Hook tries to fill his time, all the hollow spaces, by spending as many hours as possible with his old lacrosse buddies back home. Except they have somehow deviated off in the other direction, and Hook is the one struggling to keep up. There's nothing linking them any longer, and the more days pass, the further apart they feel. None of them understand why Hook wants to puke up his insides just to carve the pain out. None of them understand him: not anymore.

That night, he thinks about Jack’s voice under cover of darkness. Of the whispers about Christian, and Luchasaurus. Of how much Jack had lost, how much he will spend the rest of his life mourning. Jack’s like that, is the thing.

Hook opens up the messages again. Stares at all the date stamps before Forbidden Door. And then: I forgive you.

Read.

Nothing.

Weeks pass, a blur. Hook goes back to work without the FTW belt. Wins some. Loses some, and it doesn't sting as much as it should, because it doesn't matter now. There's no one to talk to about how the tides have changed or about how walking in the ring carries a new set of heaviness. No one understands, and Hook has pushed everyone else away that he might have gone to. That's the real irony, isn't it? Hook chose Jack, and Jack was the first person to walk away before Hook could do it himself.

Hook sits in his apartment. He studies the bare walls he's never had time to decorate and the empty cabinets that hold, like, two plates total. He drags his phone up from the couch cushion.

This is the dumbest thing he's ever done, but now? It doesn't matter. Everything has already splintered, bleeding at the broken seams.

He writes, I really fucking miss you.

The next morning, he finally has a reply.
