The first movie of the year is The Deer King (2021). It has absolutely nothing to do with the holiday, I just felt like I was in the mood for a fairy tale and this definitely scratched that itch. This movie is visually stunning and a unique entry into the “grumpy warrior’s heart is softened by the orphan that fate kind of throws at him” subgenre. While watching it I realized this is the first non Ghibli Japanese animated feature I’ve watched and I would like to add to that list over the coming year.

Masashi Ando's The Deer King Getting A UK Cinema Release @AllTheAnime #ANIME #thedeerking #masashiando @fetchpublicity

You won’t have to wait too long as Anime Limited have announced they are set to give the fantasy epic a UK cinemas release next month. REVIEW: The Deer King (2021)
A Film Directed by Masashi Ando and Masayuki Miyaji Due to the critical and commercial successes of animated films produced by Studio Ghibli, you better believe that there’s going to be a lot of copycats out there. This isn’t a new thing either – films like 2006’s Origin: Spirits of the Past and 1986’s Elfie of the Blue Sea stick out to me, but there have even been films by prominent directors…

The Deer King (2022, dir. Masashi Ando & Masayuki Miyaji) - review by Rookie-Critic
Tumblr media
The Deer King has a lot going for it; that absolutely gorgeous Ghibli-esque animation being chief among them. The sweeping plains and lush forests of the fantasy land of Aquafa feel vibrantly full of life and color, evoking hints of Princess Mononoke (which should come as no surprise, director Masashi Ando was the chief animation director on Mononoke as well as many of Ghibli's other films). The story, while maybe a tad predictable, feels like an epic. The characters go on a journey and it feels like it. Time passed is felt, and characters go through complete arcs. One complaint would be that there were maybe a few too many key characters and that the movie's runtime could not handle the volume of characters on the screen with equal care and deliberation. An incredibly solid debut feature from a well-decorated industry veteran that is for sure worth the price.
Score: 7/10
Currently available to rent or purchase on digital (iTunes, Amazon, Vudu, etc.) and on DVD & Blu-ray through GKIDS.

The Deer King Strides Into Theatrical Release Beginning Today!
@GKIDS and @ProductionIGinc's #TheDeerKing is headed to theatres beginning today! It's not only a must see for those craving a #wildwest #fantasy, but also it honours Mononoke Hime in my opinion. ;) #anime #moviereview
GKIDS Limited Screenings Beginning July 15 The Deer King is more than an adventure set in the wild west. The politics that get involved here are complex, and the plot concerns how one secretive order seeks to restore the delicate balance between man and the natural world. In what’s presented, the wolves and deer we find in this film serve a mysterious master, and as the title implies, the latter…

i read Andrew Osmond's BFI book on Spirited Away too! (both xmas presents if you're wondering, recced by aniobsessive). less here that is new and surprising to me, but Osmond does a good scene by scene commentary, drawing out some of the allusions and a lot of what isn't mythological allusions but miyazaki's inventions. commenting reasonably on the various interpretations made of the film e.g. the "it's about sex work!" angle, or the comparisons of animated acting between Western and Japanese animation. the main 'news to me' is that the original version grew into something that would have been three hours long before Miyazaki scrapped it, and the No Face plot comes from the revised version; a lot of the film's awkward turns at the end seem to have to do with Miyazaki's intuitive storyboarding process.
also speaking of auteurism, Osmond covers quite a bit the tension between Miyazaki and Masashi Ando (character designer and 'supervising animator' - not sure how that translates into JP terminology but maybe sousakkan or enshutsu?) over how to characterise Chihiro as more of a realistic, hesitant child as Ando envisioned or a typical Miyazaki protagonist; Osmond does a nice job of illustrating how Chihiro evolves from one to the other. there's a little bit more attention to 'who animated what scene' than Dudok de Wit's book, with Ohira getting a shoutout.
Osmond kind of ends it after the scene by scene commentary, there's less of an analysis of what the film set out to do and whether it succeeded, and the film's impact is covered pretty well in the intro (Big Fish and Begonia gets a nod!). it's harder to do that with Miyazaki anyway.
both of these BFI booklet thingies were well worth the read! I'll try and get more from this series if i can

L’avventura fantasy è tratta dall’omonimo romanzo di Nahoko Uehashi, autrice di “Moribito - Guardian of the Spirit” e “The Beast Player Erin”, opere già anch’esse trasposte in anime.

Film Review - The Deer King (2021)
Film Review - The Deer King (2021) @AllTheAnime #anime #TheDeerKing #filmreview #animation #MasashiAndo
Masashi Ando and Masayuki Miyaji’s The Deer King  for fans who have relied on home entertainment releases and the likes of Netflix for their fix of Japanese style animation over the past year and a half, it’s a welcome arrival. If any film was made for the big screen, it’s this epic tale of rebellion and redemption. After a bloody war, the land of Aquafa has been overrun by the Empire of Zol…
