KANEKO’S CRIB NOTES LXV: SEVEN SEAS OF CRIBS
Halloween is on the approach, and what could this mean? Tricks, treats? Skeletons, witches, draculae? A child's laughter sounding lightly through the autumn leaves? No, it doesn't mean any of that GARBAGE- it's time for the annual outing of KANEKO'S CRIB NOTES! Please enjoy this smattering of delirious cribs that will make you think "damn, that's the thing that the other thing is based on".
NEZHA: The modern pop sensibility of Soul Hackers is on display in Nezha's Astro Boy inspired design, drawing a parallel between the two "rebuilt" child heroes. It's evident from the twin spikes and whatever the fuck that is, you know, his metallic underwear I suppose.
CHERUB: Following the probably erroneously designated 'Ophanim' from SMTII, and playing on Kaneko's documented fascination with angelkind as spacecraft, this Devil Summoner take on Cherub pushes the concept even further, borrowing a look from the cover of ancient alien classic The Spaceships of Ezekiel by Joseph F. Blumrich. Compare the cover to the Japanese edition that Kaneko was more likely familiar with!
SERAPH: The composition of Seraph's four heads and crossed arms is a likely homage to the iconic cover of 1974's Queen II. Slap that shit on your dorm room wall for a change!
TITANIA: Titania's appearance in SMTII is a slightly embellished take on this Brian Froud illustration of the ghostly Glaistig of Scotland. Thanks to Psiguy for originally sharing this ID from @yen_den, based on a post uploaded to the @theavalonians twitter account!
FIONN MAC CUMHAILL: In the spirit of equanimity, a last addition to the DOI'S CRIB NOTES series: Fionn Mac Cumhaill appears to be inspired by the dress of legendary illustrator J.C. Leyendecker's 'Cu Chulainn Riding His Chariot Into Battle' (1911), from the rectangular pattern of his mail-coat down to the telltale 'X' meander that runs along the fringe of either cloak.

So the Qaditsu’s pet attack dog is Glasya-Labolas as VeskScans found out.
This guy is a little freak!!!
Tumblr media
Glasya-Labolas was certainly not the first name that entered my mind. It's not terrible, though. I think this sort of ornamentation is fine for the less striking Goetia, especially when it's this art deco bullshit on an organic frame, and it does communicate the really insane expression of the Dictionnaire design.
Tumblr media
The 'mask' looks fairly specific, so I'd like to see a source come up in the commentary. I would have gone all in on West Asia or the ancient Near East, if I didn't know better. Bizarre.

So, something i recently learned about SMT4A is that Doi got SERIOUSLY fucked over by Hashino certain higher ups on the game's design team, with the best examples being the human characters
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
...and now I'm REALLY wondering just how much of his designs that I've seen people hate on for almost a decade are really even his fault to begin with, especially when both SMT4A and SMTV have proven he's capable of some absolute bangers (Idunn, new Odin, Krishna, Fionn McCool, etc)

UPDATE 4/21/24
Tumblr media
it's been a while since I've updated like this but, let's see:
Recovery:
Arm still recovering slowly, as expected
Leg pretty good, some days it feels totally normal, as expected
SMTV:Vengeance:
I think it looks pretty good and promising so far
Did they actually fix SMT5? Time will tell...
A new demon was just spotted on a packaging promo:
Tumblr media
Let it be known that @atmaflare in my discord server may have been the first to guess this is Anansi, based on the extra arms, the spider motif on the arms, and the extra eyes.

Contentious as Doi’s artwork may be, I do really love how he homes in on character personalities and outlooks in their illustrations.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Navarre puts on a front as he tries to look cool and collected. His head is tilted up as he looks down upon others with proud contempt. But deep down he is utterly terrified and is constantly on guard by keeping his arms crossed. His gauntlet is highly visible (especially in his in-game portrait whereas the others' gauntlets are cropped out), as though being used as an ironic shield.
Contrast that with Issachar, who strikes a confident and bright-eyed stance. He is standing tall and, in his sprite, has got two feet planted firmly down. He is ready to enter a new world of possibility head-on and face anything that may come his way ... except for the devastating, soul crushing rejection.

Experiments in using Simple Stable to create a Persona generator
I like Persona and Shin Megami Tensei. Here's some tests. First I made a Galatea Persona, then a Zeus Persona. Here's some insight into my process on doing things that are For Fun.
"a digital art painting of high fashion galatea, painted by..."
Kazuma Kaneko (Left), Masayuki Doi (Right)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Shigenori Soejima (Left), Yuji Himukai (Right)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Important takeaways: It absolutely knows who Soejima is and of his signature style, so focus on him as the defining artistic base.
Next, equal parts Soejima and Tsutomu Nihei (Left), followed by equal parts Soejima, Nihei, and Zdzislaw Beksinski (Right).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some tuning with the proportions of prompt weight between the five artists (I excluded Yuji Himukai)...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And finally, once I had the actual art style dialed in, I started adding in the tokusatsu elements and playing with the aspect ratios until...
GALATEA (Left) and ZEUS (Right)

Ah yeah the greatest evil SMTV could ever conceive: Prostitutes!
Lol yeah I'm sure that element will be evoked in a really cool, really tasteful way that will challenge the player for the first time to try not to cum.
Tumblr media
I don't hate the demon bimbos, though. The one with the umbrella looks like Doi was fed the keywords [touhou but epic]. It's a less painful implementation of the decorative horror-vacui than usual. Still in that wheelhouse, but I was never holding my breath. Lilith seems to be consciously evoking trypophobia, so maybe there's more intentionality at play this time. Still very "we have Lilith at home" etc.
Now there are five Lilith designs between Kaneko, Amemiya, and Doi. Please god buy another mythology sourcebook.

I wasn't a huge fan of Shin Megami Tensei V, but I'm pretty excited for Vengeance. It seems like they could be addressing some of my issues with the game, so hopefully it turns out great. Source: https://twitter.com/ScrambledFaz/status/1464307652360646658
The other demons include story-specific ones like Shesha from SMT4A. I didn't count the demons in 4A from 4 that Masayuki Doi simply redrew like Centaur or Napaea.

Celebrating 10 Years of Bad Demon Designs!
10 years ago today, on September 19th, 2012, I was living in Japan, doing my usual morning routine of eating breakfast (probably a bowl of Cisco’s BIG Choco Saku Saku Rings cereal) and checking forums on my laptop for news. Shin Megami Tensei IV had been announced shortly after I arrived in the country only a few months earlier. Excitement was at a fever pitch; moreover, a friend and I had made plans to attend Tokyo Game Show later that week. I’d see the newest trailer up close and personal. Absolute thrills.
But I wasn’t prepared for what the forum hubbub had in store. The week’s TGS-themed Famitsu issue had leaked, and its SMT4 cover story brought with it the two-page spread seen above, firing the initial salvo of guest artist demon designs.
Asmodeus (Yasushi Nirasawa)
Koga Saburo (Tamotsu Shinohara)
Raphael (Keita Amemiya)
Omoikane (Yoshihiro Nishimura)
Kuebiko (Kyouma Aki)
I was never quite the same after seeing this image, inasmuch that it permanently altered my relationship with Shin Megami Tensei. My initial reaction from the morning has been preserved (time displayed is American EST, 13 hours behind JST):
Tumblr media
The suffocating silence surrounding Kaneko’s presumed involvement with the game (art-wise) finally resounded with scoops of dirt covering his lowered coffin. An Asmodeus-sized punch to the gut that set me off... a wee bit, lol.
But it was ultimately a learning experience. Almost immediately, the news prompted me to deeply examine what made Kaneko’s designs flourish and the guests’ flounder, at least for the sake of forum arguments. Very nearly 10 years of Tumblr later, I’m still analyzing and answering questions about demon designs, so I have Asmodeus and his stupid keys to thank for that.
The post-Kaneko years haven’t been 100% bad, though for the current Doi epoch the key word is “inconsistent.” A succulent Fionn mac Cumhaill here and a savory Mephisto there combine with a burnt Zeus and rotten Inanna for quite the unappetizing stew. Better than the overall spoiled gruel of the SMT4 guest artists? Sure, but both are equally unsatisfying.
10 years on, I’m still not “over” Kaneko and why should I or anyone else be? The void he left is huge and will probably never be filled--that’s just reality. But the great thing about unique artists with unique minds like Kaneko is that their work has no expiration date.
