Catherine Wadsworth had given me the use of her Mashpee cottage on The Cape for a few days one summer..
Basha and I decided we would leave Northampton at 10 pm and try to get there by 2 am. .
158 miles east..
Sleep in Mashpee, then head for Provincetown, where Basha had meetings with potential buyers for his rugs and knick-knacks..
His friend Lalya had agreed to put us up for the night. .
The challenge was to stay awake behind the wheel, on a Friday, end of the week..
After a big meal at India House!
We were both sleepy at the beginning until Basha introduced "manic depression" into the conversation. .
His wife had suggested that perhaps he was during one of their fights. .
We debated this and it kept us awake for much of the trip..
We reached Mashpee at 4 in the morning after getting lost and driving up and down some back roads. .
We could hear the ocean and smell the salt and knew we were close..
But we couldn't find the cottage and Basha gave up, parked near the beach and went to sleep..
I kept looking, walking round and round, and finally found it and the key was under the doormat as Catherine had said.(Later Catherine told me that one of the locals was watching us with binoculars  from her cottage, in her pajamas, convinced we had come to rob them!)..
I woke Basha and we went into the cottage and slept for a few hours..
When I woke up, Basha had already showered and flooded the bathroom..
I soaked it up with towels and left a note for Catherine. .
And it was off to Provincetown, 60 miles up the Cape..

“The Wampanoag Common Lands, as the project is called, seeks to restore a 32-acre (13-hectare) former Catholic summer camp on the banks of the Muddy Pond in Kingston to something closer to what it might have looked like before European colonization transformed it.The Native Land Conservancy, the local Native group that received the donated land this year, envisions a natural environment filled with indigenous plants and animals where Wampanoags can practice cultural ceremonies and educate new generations in traditional ways.Ramona Peters, a Mashpee Wampanoag who founded the conservancy, said the effort is all the more meaningful because the land is some 5 miles from where Pilgrims arriving on the Mayflower established the English colony of Plymouth, near the remnants of a Wampanoag community wiped out by European disease.“

Abraham Lincoln of "If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that" fame called for "Thanksgiving" specifically to celebrate the fruits of the genocide of Indigenous people. Mark Charles, author of Unsettling Truths: The Ongoing, Dehumanizing Legacy of the Doctrine of Discovery, has a free book study and lecture on the history of the holiday:
youtube
Learning for Justice has an excellent guide for educators:
Teaching about Thanksgiving in a socially responsible way means that educators accept the ethical obligation to provide students with accurate information and to reject traditions that sustain harmful stereotypes about Indigenous peoples. Thankfully, there are excellent online resources that can help educators interested in disrupting the hegemonic Thanksgiving story.
Project Archeology provides links to resources and activities adaptable for all grade levels.
The National Museum of the American Indian offers a comprehensive resource with teacher-facing ideas and activities for grades 4-8.
Plimoth Plantation has a Just for Teachers section that outlines professional development opportunities, workshops, a virtual Thanksgiving field trip and activities that incorporate the Wampanoag perspective. In one interactive activity, kids are detectives figuring out what really happened at the first meal.
The Mashpee/Wampanoag Tribe’s brief history and cultural timeline outlines the nation’s “contact experience” from their contemporary perspective.
Challenging the dominant and inaccurate narrative about Thanksgiving, providing students with a more balanced perspective of this oft-romanticized holiday, and refusing to dress students in feathered headbands are socially responsible actions. They’re actions that every teacher should undertake to benefit their students and the society their students will inherit.

THIRTEEN MOONS
Poetry and visual art by Mashpee Wampanoag poet, artist, and author Robert Peters comes to life in an original, multi-media performance. The above video performance features Peters’ poetry/art collection “Thirteen Moons,” which evolved through the artist’s personal journey to reclaim traditional culture and to live in a way consistent with his traditional beliefs.
A choral reading of the “Thirteen Moons” poetry collection sets the stage for a conversation with Peters and other Indigenous artists. Topics considered include humans’ relationship with the natural world, the meaning of “home” from a Native perspective, and the contributions of Indigenous voices to justice and democracy building today.
Performers: Lynette Perdiz, Lee Mixashawn Rozie, Mwalim "Daphunkee Professor", Mar Parrilla, and Robert Peters
The Thirteen Moons calendars are now out of print, but you can still check out the website here.

You can also purchase lovely huge prints of some of his paintings at the Tomaquag Museum, as well as magnets featuring his colored pencil work.
Watch a video of him discussing his big baby Maushop art series with Nantucket Film Fest in 2022 here.
