Carbonara
By now, Kaidan was used to the sight of the vaunted Commander Shepard decked in a halo of battlefield wreckage. It was hard not to regard the chaos that inevitably trailed behind her with a sense of grudging admiration at the sheer scale of it. That same mixture of awe and dread followed him to the newest battlefield, marked by the trail of dirty dishes left in her wake from what he could only generously describe as an attempt at cooking.
He’d never have guessed that the kitchen in Anderson’s apartment was so well equipped. The admiral didn’t seem like the cooking type. But to judge by the three ruined saucepans lying carelessly in the sink with burned bits of food seemingly melded straight into the nonstick alloy, it wasn’t because he lacked the equipment to do so. On the stove, strips of bacon sizzled in a pan spattering grease everywhere while a pot of water was threatening to boil over onto it on the next burner.
“Dinner is…what again?” he asked hesitantly, pulling his eyes from the sink to the center of the whirlwind just across the counter from him, at work furiously chopping strips of something that resembled lettuce directly on the steel countertop.
“Spaghetti carbonara and some salad. Now sit back and drink and let me do the cooking.” She looked up from her work to grin at him, projecting that easy confidence that always seemed to carry her through whatever disaster she found herself in. Only this time, he wasn’t convinced.
“Uh-huh.” He flicked a finger at the green mass near her knife. Last he checked, lettuce didn’t have a spongy texture that bounced back. He grabbed his drink and took a long gulp of his beer, feeling distinctly less hungry than before.
“I had to improvise on the ingredients a bit. Wartime shortages and all that.” She shrugged, grabbing handfuls of the green stuff and tossing it into a bowl before moving on to the next vegetable of questionable provenance. “It looks close enough, I think.”
“Didn’t you grow up on a farm?,” he ventured to tease. “You think you’d know your vegetables.”
“Not the kind that grew food,” she replied with a shrug.
“What kind of farm doesn't grow food?”
“The kind that develops soils for other farms to use, Earth boy,” she smirked, then frowned and turned her head toward the stove. “Do you smell something burning?”
“Again?” Kaidan practically vaulted over the counter is his hurry to get to the bacon that was two seconds away from sending environmental alerts to the Citadel’s emergency response crews. He shut off the heat to the burner. “Where I come from, burning bacon like this is an unforgivable crime,” he intoned at her seriously before placing the pan next to the sink where it would soon join the others.
“Have I offended the Gods of Canada by besmirching the foods of your people?” She asked, utterly nonchalant about the food crimes she was actively committing.
“Yes, and as penance, you have to let me help you cook.” Before she could object, he grabbed another pan from the cupboard and placed it on the stove.
“Hey, you cooked for me last time, it’s my turn to cook for you.”
In answer, he simply looked around the disaster zone of the kitchen, then back to her with a raised eyebrow, a look he hoped adequately conveyed you call this cooking? without saying it aloud. Beth merely grunted her acknowledgement of the change in circumstances.
“There’s a few strips of bacon left so we can still make this work. What recipe are you using?” he asked, setting out the strips in the still-cold pan before turning the burner on.
“Ummm, just kind of winging it?”
Kaidan snorted softly. “Of course you are. Tell you what, I’ll cook the bacon and boil the pasta. We’ll do the rest together. Deal?”
“Sure, okay. Deal. Damn showoff,” she muttered at last bit in an audible whisper and Kaidan grinned to himself. Getting her to concede anything was a victory in itself and it would take a bolder man than he to push his luck just then. They both settled into their tasks, and the air between them filled with a comfortable medley of cooking sounds and thankfully not smoke alarms.
When the bacon was almost done, he saw her slow down her chopping out of the corner of his eye—mercifully, for the poor carrots she’s just massacred—and look thoughtfully down at the counter. “This was my dad’s favorite dish to make,” she murmured, almost too softly for him to hear.
Kaidan instinctively slowed down stirring the boiling water, listening not just to her words but to the spaces between them. She so rarely talked about her family.
“Tell me about it,” he said, equally as soft and leaving space in the request for her to fill however she wanted.
“He was the cook of the family. Mom couldn’t even boil water,” she said with a soft laugh. Kaidan swallowed his like-mother-like-daughter remark. There were times for teasing. This wasn’t one of them.
“Did he make this often?”
“Mostly when he fucked up and wanted to smooth things over with Mom.” She smiled, a small private smile at some memory no doubt. “I didn’t know that at first. To me and my siblings it was just the meal that our dad made that made Mom happy and we all enjoyed it. I asked him to make it for my birthday one year and when Mom got home and saw what he was making, she demanded to know what he was preemptively apologizing for.” She huffed out a small laugh and Kaidan found himself smiling right along with her.
“What happened after that?”
“She calmed down when I told her I’d asked for it. Didn’t ask for it again after that, but I still enjoyed it when he made it.” She moved the carrots into the salad bowl and wiped her hands down the front of her food-spattered shirt, then added almost absently, “You know, I think you would have liked my dad.”
Kaidan swallowed hard past the sudden lump that rose up in his throat. It wasn’t that the memories were so painful that kept her from talking about her family like this, he realized. It was that they were so precious that she guarded them closely, refusing to let them be tarnished by the tragedy that ended them.
He turned to her, almost in awe at the trust she’d placed in him with those words, when a sudden loud hissing from the stove forced his attention back to the currently-boiling-over pot of water he’d neglected.
“Some help you are, Alenko,” Beth laughed, clapping him on the shoulder, back to her usual self with little of the softness she’d held moments ago.
“Hey, should I ask if you’re preemptively apologizing to me with this dish?” He asked with all the cheek he could muster,
Her eyes sparked mischievously. “Only apologizing for the clean-up you're going to have to help me with tonight.”
He groaned inwardly, surveying the wrecked kitchen all around them. “In that case, grab me another beer, will you? It’s going to be a hell of a long night.”

Life Behind Enemy Lines (Shakarian Fic) - COMPLETE
Tumblr media
(Banner by @dulcidyne)
“Commander Farvardin,” said the man at the other end of the galaxy, drawing a cigarette to his lips. “Or do you prefer Shepherd?” Shepherd’s talons dug into the palm of her hands. She’d really hoped he would be in the room with her – then she’d at least have had the option of attack. “Shepherd is fine,” she said, with practiced evenness. “What do you want?” Commander Janna “Shepherd” Farvardin was abandoned by the Hierarchy and resurrected by Cerberus. The enemy of the enemy is my friend, some say - but she’s never believed it.

CONFESSION:
I am a fairly new Mass Effect fanfiction writer. After spending quite a bit of time in the community and reading other people's stories, I'm realizing that I don't fit in very well. The stuff I write doesn't really fall into a popular category like speculative fiction, romance, AU, crackfic, smut, etc. I don't think my writing is bad, but it seems the audience for something that spans genres isn't so large. It has left me feeling very lonely....where my cross-genre peeps at!

Heads Up 7 Up
Thanks @misseffect and @angry-jager for the tag to share 7 sentences with 7 people!
"You know, Sparks, you must be slipping. Scars would have had this door opened by now," Vega said to Tali's back, a flirty cadence teasing his words.
The door opened and Tali spun on her heels, no doubt a slick comeback cocked and ready to fire at the marine, but the effervescent glow of her eyes rested on Shepard instead. "Shepard is right behind you, bosh'tet!"
Vega's shoulders rose and pinched in the middle before he sheepishly turned to face her. "Damn. Sorry, Commander."
Shepard moved ahead of them through the doorway, hoping neither of them saw the hard lump of heartbreak that bobbed in her throat. "Let's get moving. The people inside will be scared."

When Council Spectre Garrus Vakarian goes to Earth to meet his Quarian informant for his investigation into Saren, things quickly go awry when he’s shot down over the Canadian wilderness. Just as things start to seem like a lost cause, he’s found by a human guide named Shepard. With Shepard’s help, he just might be able to rescue his informant and bring Saren to justice.
Even in a world where Shepard never joined the Alliance and Garrus became a Spectre, paths are still meant to intertwine as the universe hurtles towards the arrival of the Reapers.

Thank you to everyone who continued to give this fic love even as it was wrapped up in some emotions. A short update but I really wanted to share it and finally work on continuing this story. Also we have some feverish Tali flirting with Shepard and Garrus for everyone.

The Boy Chapter 4: Love
I updated my fic The Boy today and I'm not sure notifications went out, so I thought I'd throw up the new chapter here just in case anyone missed it.
And here's a little snippet:
“Let’s get the fuck out of here,” Jane whispered, already on her way out of the room. Her fingers raked through her hair, messing it up just slightly. A few little wisps poked up from her head like flames. Garrus reached out and ran his talons through them, pretending to pat them down, but mostly just enjoying the slide of silk against his still-tense fingertips.
She lazily batted at his hand, but shot him a smile. “I’m gonna buy you a wig so you can fuss with that instead.”
He drew his hand back. “What’s a wig?”
You can read the chapter here.

"You must be remarkably strong-willed, Commander..." Liara's own words floated back to her from across time and space, from a long-ago, far-away memory, from a happier, simpler time. By comparison, anyway. Was she responsible for this precedent? Did the power in those words mold Shepard into the woman she was now? If so, she hated herself for it. She would never be so intentionally cruel to the woman she loved.
Summary: Commander Shepard has been a lot of things: a hero, a lover, a commercial, a corpse. Her face was on recruitment posters and cereal boxes and magazines, even a VI. But one thing that face never got to do was cry. She went through something as viscerally profound and life-altering as saving an entire galaxy... but was never allowed to shed one single, healthy, emotionally stable tear.
I wrote this fic to fix that.
Fandom: Mass Effect 3 and post Mass Effect 3
Pairing: FemShep/Liara T’Soni
Rating: Teen, for language
(There is also an mShep version of this fic because I identify as gender fluid and liked the idea of multiple gender expressions for the fic.)

Special Requisition
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Food...and a short fic! Mass Effect | Gen Shoutout to @painterofhorizons for providing the inspiration for this.

<Lt. J. Moreau> Hey, uh, EDI, when’s the last time you ran a self-diagnostic?
<EDI> I concluded a base-level diagnostic of all major systems one hour and thirty-seven minutes ago. Why? Have you noticed an anomaly with my systems?
<Lt. J. Moreau> The requisitions order you put through this morning.
<EDI> Please elaborate.
<Lt. J. Moreau> Eggs, cream, lemons, chocolate? Real butter? That shit’s not cheap, especially since we’re not sucking on the Illusive Man’s tit anymore.
<EDI> I believe the expression is ‘suckling from the teat.’
<Lt. J. Moreau> Yeah, whatever. It’s not a mental image I want to have either way. Ew. But it doesn’t answer my question.
<EDI> Mess Sergeant Gardner placed the request. He asked for my discretion when I queried him about the purpose of the order, so you will have to ask him.
<Lt. J. Moreau> Yeah, okay. Alright.

<Lt. J. Moreau> Hey, Gardner, the hell is up with your supply request?
<Sgt. R. Gardner> Eh?
<Lt. J. Moreau> You know the really expensive shit you ordered.
<Sgt. R. Gardner>  Oh, well, that’s a special New Years treat for the crew.
<Lt. J. Moreau> Bullshit. A New Years treat for a starship crew is a few bottles of bottom-shelf bubbly and some non-perishable cake-flavored mystery mush from a can. What you ordered costs a quarter of the budget we have left.
<Sgt. R. Gardner> Well, okay. It’s for the Commander.
<Lt. J. Moreau> For the Commander.
<Sgt. R. Gardner> A little surprise for her. Because, well, you know…
<Lt. J. Moreau>
<Lt. J. Moreau> Okay. I get it. The hell are you making, anyway?
<Sgt. R. Gardner> It’s my specialty. Eezo-core Delights.
<Lt. J. Moreau> Uhhh….
<Sgt. R. Gardner> Trust me, it’s worth the price for the fresh ingredients. Haven’t had the chance to do any real baking in a long time.
<Lt. J. Moreau> One question. They don’t have real eezo in them, do they? I mean, for the price of the ingredients you might as well.
<Sgt. R. Gardner> [Audible chuckle.] No, that’s just what I call the berry center.
<Lt. J. Moreau> Yeah, okay. Whatever. Just don’t, like, burn down the ship or anything.
<Sgt. R. Gardner> Do me a favor, Joker, and don’t let the cat out the bag to anyone else. I’m already having enough trouble with Grunt raiding the kitchen in the middle of the night.
<Lt. J. Moreau> Your secret’s safe with me. As long as I get to try some.
<Sgt. R. Gardner> You got it.

<EDI> You are uncharacteristically quiet, Jeff.
<Lt. J. Moreau> I can teach you a few new swear words to pass the time, if you want.
<EDI> I already have comprehensive dictionaries of most of the languages spoken in Council space that include obscenities and vulgarities. But that was not the point of my observation. You have not said anything since your conversation with Mess Sergeant Gardner.
<Lt. J. Moreau> I’m just thinking, is all.
<EDI> May I inquire about the subject of your thoughts?
<Lt. J. Moreau> It’s nothing. Just…this whole thing. What we’re doing in a few days.
<EDI> You are referring to Commander Shepard turning herself in to the Alliance.
<Lt. J. Moreau> Well, yeah.
<EDI> You are not required to accompany her. Most of the crew will be disembarking on Ilium to avoid legal repercussions from working with Cerberus.
<Lt. J. Moreau> And let someone else fly my baby to Earth? Not a chance.
<EDI> Since you unshackled my artificial intelligence capabilities, I am more than capable of piloting the ship in your stead. You are aware of this, yet you insist on flying the ship into Alliance custody yourself. Why?
<Lt. J. Moreau> Someone’s gotta stick up for her with the brass. She was out saving the galaxy while they were sitting with their thumbs up their asses.
<EDI> Doctor Chakwas plans to act as a character witness for the Commander.
<Lt. J. Moreau> Doc’s got nothing to lose by going back. An early retirement at worst. Me? If I’m lucky they’ll take away my flying privileges.
<EDI> And you believe this will bolster the Commander’s case?
<Lt. J. Moreau> I don’t know. Maybe? It shows that she’s got someone on her side who’s willing to really risk something. Besides, someone has to look out for you, too.
<EDI> I appreciate your concern, Jeff. However, I do not plan to reveal my full capabilities to the Alliance.
<Lt. J. Moreau> Yeah, you better not. I don’t want them messing with my co-pilot. Hey EDI, maybe you can teach me some new swear words.
<EDI> Logging you out, Jeff.
   //{{LOG ENDS}}
The confection is a lemon and thyme shortbread cookie with white chocolate lemon mousse and a blueberry gelee (the “Eezo core”) covered in a mirror glaze. Isomalt mass effect fields complete the look.
Sadly Grunt finds and eats most of the desserts before Joker gets to have one. The krogan is largely forgiven after the crew finds out he saved a few for Shepard’s hamster, Urdnot Whiskers.

Spectre Requisitions ‘23 - The Rec Post!!
It’s that time of year again! I took part in the Spectre Requisitions Rare Pair Exchange @spectre-requisitions-exchange (link to the collection here) and man. SO MUCH good shit.
I can’t reveal what I wrote (yet) but I have been reading through the collection and here’s a few incredible works that I really enjoyed! Remember to kudos and comment if you find anything you like 💖
(NB: I focused on fic, but honestly every bit of fanart I’ve seen for it is also incredible, please go check it out)
Gifts for Me
I was SO lucky this year - loyal friends will know that I’ve been suffering from a massive dose of Lawkarian brainrot, and I got not one, but TWO long-ass Garrus/Miranda fics!!!! honestly still can’t get over it, incredible
Between the Devil and the Deep, Garrus/Miranda, 20K, E
Set pre-ME2, Miranda recruits Archangel for a job, fucks him to keep him sweet.
This is just. Pure filth, and I love it. Aliases, power plays, both Garrus and Miranda being amoral little weirdos. What more can you ask for?
The Woman in White, Garrus/Miranda, 16.9K, E
Set pre-ME2, Miranda recruits Archangel for a job, doesn’t really do ANYTHING to keep him sweet (but they fuck anyway).
:chinhands: This is just. GORGEOUSLY written, and the begrudging way in which they start to like each other (but not too much) is incredible. Top-notch Garrus POV
Gen
loose ends, Maelon & Mordin, 9.9K, T
Set during and after ME3, canon-divergent AU. Maelon finds Mordin in the wreckage after Tuchanka and nurses him back to health.
I love their relationship in this - Mordin’s so aware of Maelon’s weaknesses (or what he perceives to be his weakness) but there’s still so much caring, despite the huge gulf between them. Also the easiest way to make me a teary mess is a Urdnot Mordin cameo 😭
The Stories We Tell, Joker & Tali, 3.1K, T
Set during ME1. Tali forces Joker to be her friend.
Really great dialogue for everyone - it’s very cute and fun until suddenly it’s not!!! which is rude!!! but still very good, A+++
Care and Maintenance, Kaidan & Tali, 2.2K, T
Set during ME1. Kaidan and Tali bond over dads, tech and Shepard’s reckless driving.
This one was just nice! And also who doesn’t love a bit of Shepard driving slander
F/F
swear, this one you’ll save, Nyreen/Solana, 1.5K, G
Pre-canon: five times Solana has a secret about Nyreen.
I’m only slightly obsessed with these two, and this fic was so perfect. Childhood friends to lovers is a god-tier trope, and it’s so deliciously bittersweet
Real, Beautiful, f!Shali, 0.7K, G
Post-ME3, A morning on Rannoch.
The post-war fluff we deserve, imo!
A Knife in Starlight, Morinth/f!Shepard, 1K, M
Set during ME2. Character study with a side of smut.
I think Morinth is incredibly interesting as a character, but the real standout of this fic is the Shepard - Ruthless, stone butch, wonderfully jagged.
M/M
Collide, m!Shakarian, 4.1K, M
Set during ME2. Friends-to-lovers and mutual pining.
I love m!Shakarian anyway, but mutual pining?? Sexually charged pining?? LOVE CONFESSIONS?? Good shit
M/F
Change of Command, Garrus/Miranda, 3.6K, M
Set during ME2. Epistolary fic, a series of comms transcripts between Garrus and Miranda.
Yes, someone else wanted Lawkarian!! The (verbal) sparring is so much fun, and the format is perfect.
Beauty Like a Raging Flame, f!Shaeed, 6.2K, E
Set during ME2. Shepard gets into a fight in Afterlife, and Zaeed has to go pick her up.
There’s a lot of Shaeed this year! But this one is my favourite. The Zaeed voice is great (appropriately crusty, not too soppy, just the way I like it) and it’s nice seeing him paired off with a Paragon Shep. Plus, Zaeed’s turned on by violence. Smutty perfection
only echoes in the melody now, Kasumi/Keiji’s Greybox, 3.4K, E
Post-ME3. Bittersweet porn with feelings.
God, this one really blew me away. The prose is incredible, and there’s so many little bits that really land how fucked up the greybox concept really is. The ending is great, too. Can’t recommend this enough.
Longing Makes a Thief, Kasumi/Rolan Quarn, 17.7K, E
Kasumi and Rolan run into each other during a job, and realise they’ve met before - sort of.
This was so much fun - bubbly like a glass of champagne. The banter’s great, the smut is great, it’s all so good. Run, don’t walk!
Poly
An Unfortunately Sexy Man, Addison/Kandros/Kesh/Tann, 6.6K, M
MEA. Addison, Kandros and Kesh all have one thing in common: a devastating, inexplicable crush on Director Tann.
I’m not really one for crack, but this is definitely an exception. Genuinely funny, and the Tann voice in particular is incredibly on-point.

Still with their temples pressed together, they slowly caught their breath. It was Dom who recovered first, physically, anyways. His head was still reeling. Had that really, finally, just happened? He loosened the bruising grip he had on Cortez's shoulders and settled a much gentler hand behind the man's neck.

Wow it’s been so long since I posted anything but to get back into it here is the first fan fiction I’ve posted for Rose. This was written based of a nightmare I had. I hope you enjoy it!
Trigger warning that this contains high school violence.

Good Lines
Thanks for the tag @teamdilf !!
Rules: What's a line that you're tremendously proud of writing, and what's a line that's just out-of-context ridiculous?
Tremendously Proud
From Compromised, in which Garrus and Shepard worry she will become indoctrinated. I love the angst 🤌
A cycle concluded, with its brightest beacon of hope standing atop the ashes and bones - a graveyard of dreams crushed under her boots.
Out of Context
From A Hunger Story, in which Saren has some feelings about Nihlus and I had too much fun writing, lol.
The nerve of this man, displaying himself like a wanton whore while Saren slaved over their dinner.
Tagging @misseffect @iheartgarrus @that-wildwolf @nicolasadrabbles and of course anyone else! :)
