🤦🏻 A fanfiction/chapter you are embarrassed about having written?

i try not to feel embarrassed about writing! i try to be kind to myself about writing, take the stress off of it, enjoy it for what it is! there are of course fic i wrote when i was younger that i thought were Better than they actually Are, but i was having a great time! so! whatever!

that being said! i feel very awkward about most of the sex scenes i’ve ever written 😂 this comes from my very ace experience of the world tho, not of any real negative embarrassment i think.

💔 Least favorite ship you have written about? (nothing against these ships! they just don’t usually work for me!)

i once wrote an xmen fic for erik/raven. which is really not a ship i ship at all. (update. went back to reread this. who was i in 2013??? wild times)

also! recently got myself to write sparky! which is not something i thought i’d ever do!

⛰ Hardest fic to write?

fics that were really hard to get started: gone fishing (xmen fic for a cherik zine, written when my brain was fully on board the stargate atlantis express) and gathering wishes (the holiday spirit was just not working with me)

fics that i agonized over for literal years bc they weren’t working right: twenty-three days and zero to one-hundred

✏️ The first fanfiction you ever wrote? (doesn’t have to be a posted fic)

you can actually dig up all of baby me’s work over on ffn (mostly anime stuff!). i have, for a number of reasons, always posted under the same username. i’m sure i wrote things that were like fanfic before that first fic, but i did publish the first story i wrote intentionally as fanfic to ffn! some gundam wing fluff, i believe.

(i would go back and find the link to it. but. as much as i am kind to past me, i don’t need to reread fic i wrote in 2002 😂)

AITA for throwing my favorite human into the ocean having a slight transporter malfunction?

One of my (several million years, NB) humans (M37) recently blew up 5/6 of a solar system. My favorite human (M35) is pissed at him. I wasn't there and they haven't written their reports yet, so I don't know exactly what went down, but Favorite is being an ass to the other one. I know for a fact that he is no angel himself. Also, I like the solar system blowing up one, he takes care of me and fixes stuff when it breaks down.

So when Favorite was done being mean and touched the transporter panel without looking (because he wanted to be oh so suave and cool), I sent him exactly where he touched the display — 10.8 meters off of the South East pier. He splashed down into the ocean and eventually got rescued, and I think he learned his lesson. People are saying I'm the asshole because I had to override six security protocols and two subroutines to get the transporter to malfunction, and the waves were high and there were shark-like things, but eh. Sometimes you gotta yeet people into the water to get your point across.

End OTW Racism Link Round-up: Week 2!

Our first (hopefully of many) two-week #EndOTWRacism action is over! Check out our post on next steps and how to stay involved if you haven’t already.

Note: There has been a plethora of information that’s come out about OTW in the past week, particularly from former and current volunteers, which calls into question the way the organization functions and details the harm they have done to their own volunteers. Much of it does not directly reference our campaign or racism, so we won’t be sharing all of that conversation here, but you can find a round-up of that conversation at the dreamwidth account synonymous.

3. What fandoms do you write for?

Stargate Atlantis, primarily, with a couple for The Magnus Archives, because I recently fell for it headlong.

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

Yes, always. I love comments, they show that people are engaging with the work and I understand and appreciate the effort that it takes to make them. They deserve a thank you. Also, sometimes comments have sparked off an interesting train of ideas, which I love.

6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

Probably The nightingale with fethers new depending on which angle you look at it. Or A Short Space of Fair Weather, which is pretty sad.

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Pretty impossible to tell as most of my fics end happily. But There and Back Again has positive outcomes, not just for the protagonists, but for two whole galaxies, so I’m voting that one.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

Fortunately not, so far at least.

9. Do you write smut? If so what kind?

Occasionally. It tends to be awkward and laced with humour.

10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?

I have one sort of crossover comic, which is SGA meets Lord of the Rings: Of Rings and Ill-Advised Succumbing to Curiosity

It seems unlikely

No, but would be very happy for anyone to do so.

13. Have you ever cowritten a fic before?

Yes, wrote a couple with @trainofcommand from just having a little fun back and forth on Discord.

14. What's your all-time favourite ship?

McShep.

15. What's a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?

My WIPs tend to be either an aimless few sentences or paragraphs which trail off and lose my interest, or they get finished. I rarely have a plot in mind beforehand, so I don’t really have anything that’s itching to come out.

16. What are your writing strengths?

Humour, I think. I enjoy writing dialogue and having fun with language.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Too many to mention, but I’ll go with plotting. Unless it’s a very short and complete idea, I can’t plot until I’ve written half of something and kind of have to work out a possible direction and wriggle the words around to fit. Often this takes a few goes and lots of reversing and trying a different fork.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

If it works for the fic and you have reasonable confidence in the accuracy, go for it.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

SGA. My Rodney McKay addiction tipped me over the edge from reader to writer and that just kept going. And going.

20. Favourite fic you've ever written?

This one is impossible and very much depends on mood, so I’m going to cheat and list three that come to mind:

A Ragdoll, Badly Stitched: death and grief is a recurring theme in my stuff and this is one of the first which helped me successfully articulate some things about it

How Death Came for Rodney McKay (and why it won’t be doing that again): Death again, but very much in humour mode. I’m pleased with the framing structure.

The Bakery in the Woods I love Fairy tale style stories, both just in themselves and how you can use them in relation to real world issues. This one came together in a way I’m happy with.

Oof. Both 1 and 10 and not a lot in between. Sometimes editing is an education in all the things I simply don't get about the English language, but other times it brings my story out of the ground and into the sun.

I've never written a reader insert, not sure I could pull it off. I have some OCs in a few fics that I love to bits!

Gosh, I'm always researching things for fics. I think what's most weird about them is the variety.

I read way too much about 17th century french aristocracy for a minor character in my OFMD fic, dove deep into tapdancing for Backup Plans, a whole load of ways to die for the whumptober 2022 series.

I'm currently looking a lot at wildfire prevention methods for a wip which is interesting.

I am the last person you'd want life advice from! But I always double the herbs and spices when cooking a recipe I found online, and I highly rec setting up your coffee/tea for the morning the night before so it's quick and easy when you get up.

So many whump ideas I'd love to give to @buffycuddlespigs, domesticity I'd like to give to @a-storm-of-roses, and smut I'd like to give to @bunny-bopper.

I went to Basingstoke Comic Con last Friday with my son Gregory - following a break in my chemo schedule due to emergency surgery resulting in fewer inside bits and an ileostomy. I'd thought I wouldn't be able to go - and it wasn’t easy, but I did it anyway.

Here’s what happened:

First I had my photo with Rachel Luttrell who was lovely and liked my feltie Teyla:

Then my son took the role of photographer for me in my Impala cosplay with Baby herself (or one of them)!

Then there were some strange clashes in the schedule - Stargate Q and A sessions when the Stargate guests were supposed to be signing autographs, so we weren’t sure who was going to turn up or how to be in two places at once.  But in the end, it worked to our advantage, because nobody else was sure either, and so when Joe and Rachel came along, there was hardly anyone else there so we got more time and more conversation than we would have.

Joe remembered me from the Wales Comic Con in 2021, which I definitely wasn’t expecting and he said he still had the little book of drawings I gave him there!  (It was a ridiculously stuffed little book - I’d gone way overboard.)  He took a photo of my art and put it on his Instagram!

Then we went to Rachel’s table and she was really nice and liked my art and gave me her phone to put my Instagram name in.  There was no one else at Joe’s table at that point so he was wandering about behind her and it was lovely just to see them interact as friends!

We managed to get Gary Jones next, who was really funny.  I told him it was my son’s first Comic Con and he shook Gregory’s hand.  But then he said, ‘No, that’s no good,’ and got up, came around the table and proceeded to give Gregs a lesson in firm handshakes.  It was hilarious!

I’d wanted to draw all the guests but just didn’t have time, with all the chemo and being in hospital shenanigans, so had to use the photos provided, which were nice, if not the same.

Next, after some hanging around and listening to the Q and As (which were all really good and Michael Shanks just kept spinning on his stool and being really silly) we got Paul McGillion and Rainbow Sun Francks.  They were both really lovely and nice to Gregory and, again, there were no queues so we had plenty of time!

Then we hit a bit of a hurdle because the day (and my energy) was running out and it didn’t look like Ben Browder or Michael Shanks were coming back.  Michael had a private Meet and Greet going on but Gregs really wanted to meet him, in particular because he wanted to introduce his homemade Goa’uld.

But then somehow we ended up in an impromptu session in the hotel bar - just a handful of con-goers with Ben and Paul and Rainbow! And Paul came up to me and told me how much he liked my art, because a friend had brought one of my pictures to be signed and pointed me out! And then I got to sit down opposite Ben and have a little chat and he signed my art.

But we still hadn't got Michael Shanks. So I pestered various organisers until I found one who knew what to do. And she got us in on the end of his Meet and Greet and then when the meet-and-greeters had gone we had a little private session where he, predictably, attacked himself with Gregory's Goa'uld and then signed my art and then before he went (blush - hides behind hands) I got a kiss on the cheek! 🥰

So, a memorable day! And then we had the fun of trekking home from Basingstoke, through London, on costume, me in my Impala outfit and Gregs as my little Gate-mission-ready military escort. We should just dress like that all the time...
