You're one of the most talented sopranos of the century. You were invited to perform at the birthday party of a rich French industrialist. After performing for a small group of the top dignitaries in the world, the home is suddenly taken over by guerillas. They are led by a brutal, yet mesmerizing chief--Comandante Benjamin. You wondered how an attractive man like him could commit such wrongdoings. In the chaos that surrounds you two, you have developed a covert fondness for each other. What will happen when The Commander wants to take your affair a step further?

The hostage situation was approaching its 3rd week. Hopes of escaping unscathed were stamped out by the spit-shined boot of The Commander. He provided the bare necessities but threatened us with a bullet to the head if we caused trouble. The owner of the mansion, Mr. Hosokawa, was murdered upon Commander's arrival. His body was wrapped in tarp and buried in the backyard. Luckily, no other hostages have been murdered.

For some reason, Benjamin took to you. You originally assumed that it was because of your prominence as an opera singer and the wealth you could provide him with. As you spoke with him, you felt something deeper. You saw an embittered man who has been crushed by the pervasiveness of corruption, racism, and inequality. You also saw a tenderhearted, impassioned man who craved peace—and companionship. You realized that you two have a lot in common.

Your fondness for one another started bubbling to the surface. You asked questions with obvious answers just so you could be in his presence. The sweetest smiles creeped across your face when he would joke around. You remember your heart skipping a beat the first time he called you cariño. He was more emboldened with his actions. He would watch you read or play piano with the most earnest expression. He would purposefully brush his hands against your when you two played cards. He would take peeks at your cleavage when you were distracted. Something was brewing.

You awoke to footsteps approaching your sleeping quarters. Noise couldn’t be muffled as your room was empty with the exception of a sleeping bag & a stack of novels in the corner. The only source of light was the moon shining into your window. You didn’t sit up until Benjamin entered. He had regular clothing on except his military jacket.

Although you should’ve asked, you didn’t. You enjoyed his spontaneity. That trait was so far removed from your previous flames. Maybe they feel as if they don’t have to try since they have so much money to burn. Ben ushered you to ‘his’ master bedroom, that of which belonged to Mr. Hosokawa. Despite the circumstances, the room had a warm ambience. Benjamin would light candles at night. The Victorian-style door was swiftly closed behind you.

“I was thinking that we could-“ You started before you were cut off with a fervent kiss. Benjamin’s lips were soft & his tongue was sour from the Modelo he drank not too long ago. A desirous groan emitted from his throat. In a mood of toying with the brute, you pulled away & gazed into his eyes. You could’ve fainted with the way he looked at you.

“I can’t pretend anymore, princesa. Te necesito.”

Frieren: Beyond Journey's End Episode 12 Review - What Makes A Hero?

What makes a hero? To be chosen by a legendary sword? To help people in need? To be the one who defeats the demon boss? There aren’t any specific requirements, honestly. However, in this world’s case, Himmel fit two of those categories and he was revered as a hero for the rest of time. Which option does not apply to him? The first one.

Frieren and her party reach the Village of the Sword where they meet the 49th village chief, a little girl. She was a bit upset that Frieren took too long to return to the village, as she promised she’d be back; though, this was in her grandmother’s will. Basically, this part of this episode emphasized a lot on Himmel’s sword, which was said to be the legendary sword, but his is a replica. Himmel set off on a journey to become a real hero because a boy named Heiter told him he’d only be a fake hero if he wielded a fake sword; said Heiter is the same Heiter in the party. Despite Himmel becoming revered as the hero after defeating the Demon King, it turns out that he did it without being the chosen hero; yes, the legendary sword has yet to be pulled out from the stone slab. Himmel actually failed to pull it out, signifying he wasn’t the chosen hero, but still became the hero everyone needed. Frieren’s words about heroes being romanticized is correct. That was why the legendary sword tale was passed around, so that people would assume Himmel was the one who pulled out the sword and defeated the Demon King without knowing the full truth; it’s like saying “history is biased” in a way.

Anyways, I thought Stark was going to pull out the sword, but it makes sense why he wouldn’t. The main reason being that he doesn’t have self-worth; it wouldn’t make sense for someone with rock-bottom self-esteem like Stark to suddenly have the courage to pull out the sword. The second part of this episode emphasized this. As Fern contemplates on what to get Stark for his birthday, Stark tells her a bit of his past and how he was the runt of his family and how he was never valued by his family save for his older brother Stolz. In fact, before the second part came, Stark stared at the sword and thought about his brother and how heroic he was. He probably thought if someone was a good candidate to be the hero and pull out the sword, it’d be Stolz.

Stark’s low self-esteem came from how his father viewed him as a failure. Fortunately, Stolz was a very good older brother and treated Stark kindly. He didn’t care if Stark got his pure white cloak muddied, he still taught his little brother how to stance properly when wielding a weapon. He didn’t care if he told Stark to run away and only save himself; as long as Stark was alive, that mattered most to him. He didn’t care if he was the only one celebrating Stark’s birthday by making him a large hamburg steak; as long as Stark enjoyed his birthday meal then that mattered most to him. It clearly showed that while he was the village’s pride and joy, he was still human enough to value Stark as both family and a warrior. At least Stark finally realized as he had his birthday patty that he was actually valued by both his master and his brother. It’s ambiguous if Stolz is still alive or not. If he is dead, then Stark has a reason to go to Aureole as he can meet his brother’s spirit there. I’m glad that there was at least someone kind in Stark’s life before he met Eisen. Stark really needs a confidence booster; I hope that the more he travels with Frieren and Fern, the more confident he becomes.

Though, I do wonder why Fern keeps accusing Stark of being a pervert when he’s anything but. Okay, he did make boob and poop jokes when it came to the clouds, but Stark is just a childish and immature person. He was only trying to be nice to Fern but gets called a pervert three times. You know who’s the real pervert? Frieren. It makes sense she’d have some perverseness in her as she’s lived for a millennia. The way she smugly looked at Fern as she tried to hand her a clothes dissolving potion was hilarious in execution and payback. Frieren is the first person to get naked in this show, albeit by force.

The animation in this episode was really good from small details like Fern’s dangling sleeves to intricate stuff like the fight against the monsters. Madhouse really does deliver when they want to. Also, there’s also that scene where Frieren looks at a ring in her bag. That ring appeared in the opening and she did hold onto it in an early episode. I can tell it’s an important item later on.

Overall, I did like the lesson that this episode told: not all heroes are chosen. Some heroes step up when they are needed and become the ones everyone needs. I don’t mind the chosen one stories (and I still do like them), but it’s nice to have fantasy stories where the hero wasn’t a chosen hero. I do wonder if the chosen hero in Frieren’s world will appear one day. If they do, will they join her party? What are your thoughts on this episode?

1923 – The Irish poet, short story writer, novelist, and playwright Brendan Behan was born on this date (d.1964). He is best known for this autobiography Borstal Boy. In his book, In Terrible Queer Creatures: Homosexuality in Irish History, Brian Lacey writes that the noted playwright, poet, and novelist, who spent three years in a British reformatory (where he discovered his "Hellenism," as he himself put it) for a 1939 IRA bombing, was Bisexual throughout his life.

At the time of his death, he was working on an unfinished novel, called "The Catacombs" after its setting in a real-life drinking place of that name in a number of interconnected basements in Dublin's Fitzwilliam Place that was a notorious homosexual hangout.

1944 – Nicholas F. Benton is the founder, owner, and editor of the Falls Church News-Press, a weekly newspaper distributed in Falls Church, Virginia, and in parts of Fairfax County, Arlington County, and Washington D.C.

Born in Ross, California, Benton earned a degree in English from Westmont College (a Christian college) in 1965. After college he was a reporter and sports writer for the Santa Barbara News-Press. He obtained a master of divinity degree in 1969 from the Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, California. He became a contributor to the underground newspaper Berkeley Barb, helped found the Berkeley Gay Liberation Front and wrote the first editorial for the newspaper Gay Sunshine.

In 1970, Benton was involved in to get the White Horse Inn (a gay bar a mile south of UC Berkeley) to loosen its restrictive policies toward expression of gay identity.

Also in 1970, Benton became the first Gay Liberation spokesman to address a major anti-war demonstration.

Benton worked for the Lyndon LaRouche organization from 1974 until the late 1980s, first as a political organizer, and later as the Washington D.C. bureau chief and White House Correspondent for LaRouche's Executive Intelligence Review.[10] In 2007, Benton wrote that he had left the LaRouche movement in the 1980s.Benton founded the Falls Church News-Press in March 1991, and in July 2010 celebrated the periodical's 1,000th edition. He has served twice as the president of the local Chamber of Commerce, been named Falls Church's “Pillar of the Community” twice and “Business Person of the Year” once, and had his enterprise named “Business of the Year” twice. He has authored a weekly national affairs column in his periodical since 1997.

In November 2009, Benton was unsuccessful in a bid to acquire the Washington Blade in the wake of the bankruptcy of the Blade's parent company.

1960 – Today's the birthday of Holly Johnson, lead singer of 1980s band Frankie Goes to Hollywood. The band were pioneering for having two openly gay members - Holly and second vocalist Paul Rutherford – and a sound and image that borrowed heavily from underground gay culture and dance music, which they in turn fed into with their controversial number 1 hit Relax.

In November 1991, Johnson learned he was HIV positive. This triggered a temporary withdrawal from the music business and public life in general, with one of his last TV performances around the time being at the Diamond Record Awards, Antwerp, where he performed "Americanos" and "Where Has Love Gone?". His condition was made public during an interview with The Times in April 1993.

In March 1994, his critically acclaimed autobiography, A Bone in My Flute, was published. In it he discusses his struggle with, and acceptance of, his homosexuality. The same year, he recorded a new single, "Legendary Children (All of Them Queer)", whose lyrics referred to famous LGBT people throughout history. During 1994, he performed live at London's Gay Pride show, where he performed "Relax", "Legendary Children" and "The Power of Love". In April 1998, he performed "The Power of Love" live at the Easter Gay Happening in Krefeld, Germany at Club Königsburg.

Since the mid 1990s, Johnson has worked primarily as a painter. His works have been exhibited at the Tate Liverpool, and The Royal Academy. He has contributed to Modern Painters and the Paul Smith sponsored CARLOS magazine.

1965 – Stephen Raymond Merritt, better known as Stephin Merritt, is an American singer-songwriter, best known as the principal singer and songwriter of the band The Magnetic Fields. He is known for his distinctive and untrained bass voice. Merritt is openly gay.

Merritt created and played principal roles in the bands The Magnetic Fields, The 6ths, The Gothic Archies and Future Bible Heroes. He briefly used the name The Baudelaire Memorial Orchestra as an attribution for a song written for Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events, entitled "Scream and Run Away". Further music was recorded for the audiobook versions of the series and is attributed to The Gothic Archies. The Tragic Treasury was released by Nonesuch Records in October 2006 along with the 13th and final book of the series.

Growing up, Merritt used different spellings of his name for different purposes. Stephin was one such pseudonym that he used to sort his junk mail, and that became the spelling he used for his life as a musician.

Prior to 2013, Merritt had never met his father, folk singer Scott Fagan, who had a brief affair with Merritt's mother, Alix Merritt. The three met at a screening of the film AKA Doc Pomus in 2013, and Fagan is planning a cover album of his son's songs pending the outcome of a Kickstarter campaign.

Mrritt's lyrics are known for bending and blurring gender lines; examples include the song "When My Boy Walks Down The Street," sung by a male vocalist, which contains the lyric "and he's going to be my wife."

1992 – Avan Jogia is a Canadian-British actor, singer, activist, director, and writer. He is known for his television roles Beck Oliver in the Nickelodeon sitcom Victorious, Danny Desai in the ABC Family drama Twisted, Roman Mercer in the Syfy paranormal action series Ghost Wars, and Ulysses Zane in the Starz comedy Now Apocalypse.

Jogia first came to prominence with his portrayal of Danny Araujo in the 2006 biographical television film A Girl Like Me: The Gwen Araujo Story. After moving to the United States in his late teens, he landed various television roles within series such as Caprica (2009–2010), and the miniseries Tut (2015). Jogia's numerous credits in television and cinema include Spectacular! (2009), Finding Hope Now (2010), Rags (2012), Ten Thousand Saints (2015), I Am Michael (2015) and Zombieland: Double Tap (2019). Avan Tudor Jogia was born in Vancouver, British Columbia. Jogia's father is British Indian, and his mother is of English, German, and Welsh descent. He is the younger brother of Ketan, a music producer in London.

Besides English, Jogia speaks some Gujarati and French.

According to The Start, Jogia was a student at Killarney Secondary School until age 17 when he left to pursue acting full-time, having already gained a number of small television credits. In an interview, he said that his parents withdrew him from middle school in favor of home schooling. He moved to Los Angeles, California on the trial-basis that he would land a role within a six-month period – or return to schooling.

Jogia has cited British actor Tim Curry as one of his early acting inspirations, particularly Curry's role as Long John Silver in the 1996 musical adventure comedy film, Muppet Treasure Island. Jogia co-founded the online PSA organization Straight But Not Narrow (SBNN) in 2011, with Heather Wilk and Andre Pochon, in conjunction with the support of fellow actor, Josh Hutcherson. The non-profit organization is aimed towards changing the attitudes and viewpoints of heterosexuals about the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community. Jogia believed, "[t]here was no one making straight youth responsible for their apathy. When you see a bully beating up a kid and you stand idle, that's as loud, or louder, than the actual oppression", and thus established the organization.

1994 – Pope Iohn Paul II attacks the European Parliament resolution in favor of lesbian and gay rights.

2018 – Adam Rippon was selected to represent the United States at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea where he won a bronze medal thus becoming the first openly gay U.S. male athlete to win a medal in a Winter Olympics. Later that year, he won season 26 of Dancing with the Stars with professional dancer Jenna Johnson, making Rippon the first openly gay celebrity to win the competition.

Kiki's Chaotic Legacy Challenge rules!

Now that I've proofread and updated all the Generations for my legacy, here's the official post.

I do plan on writing down a Sims 3 version eventually too, so stay tuned for that.

If anyone is interested in trying this legacy, please use the #KikisChaoticLegacy or #ChaoticLegacy. I'd love to see people play this and see their experiences.

As the title picture says, this has multiple endings. Each generation you have two main choices, each choices can affect in some ways the next generation. Eventually this all snowballs, and comes to a finally in a BIG 6 different Generation option for the last Gen.

Brodie was a very sensitive yet outgoing kid. His sensitivity wasn’t geared in physical pain, but more-so in the ways that made him stand up to the bullies on the playground who picked on the more introverted kids. It was because of this, that he was seen as a leader at the mere age of 4 and also earned him his best friend, Elliot.

As he grew, his teachers and peers favored him for his golden heart and puppy dog smile. His popularity skyrocketed, but he had his mom and dad to thank for the blueprint of his personality. His father, Kenji Sato, was the textbook definition of chivalry and had a very go-getter viewpoint of the world with a good head on his shoulders. His mother, Emily Sato, was always putting others first, walked as if sunshine was beneath her feet, and could make even the coldest of hearts crack a smile. Between his father and mother, Brodie was the golden boy in town. What else would one expect from the county’s fire chief and nurse practitioner’s boy?

Though he lost his father to a fire when he was only 7, Brodie was forced to grow up as he watched his mother slowly fall apart. At first, she just laid on the couch and stared at the wall for what felt like months on end; Brodie then becoming the caretaker until she was able to go to work. It was strange watching her grieving process change from not wanting to move, to then being nonstop. It felt almost close to normal, that was until she brought home a baby from the hospital. In the blink of an eye, Brodie became a master of many hats; not only stepping up to not let his mom down, but also trying to be the best older brother he could be for the new addition to the Sato family. They were a little broken, but they made it work. And by ‘they’ I mean Brodie. When his sister needed help on a school project, he was there. When his sister skinned her knee, he was there. Brodie was the constant that showed up when their mother’s busy nurse schedule kept her at bay. When the world checked out, Brodie was always there to make sure his sister wasn’t alone.

If it wasn’t his teammates, then it was Elliot who attempted to get Brodie to live a little. Always doing the right thing and being everyone’s walking conscious was tiring after all, but Brodie hadn’t strayed from the straight and narrow. Even with the shelved grief and the need to be a good role model and caretaker for Harper, Brodie never stepped out of line. That was, until the senior year homecoming game. Being the captain of the hockey team, it only made sense that he had friends in other sport teams. It was serendipitous that the football team practically paired off with the hockey team in the realm of friendships; the quarterback happening to be none other than Elliot. When they won, the party seemed to get a little out of control. Brodie drank for the first time, but didn’t necessarily know when to stop. At least he wasn’t as fucked up as his best friend was.

Brodie still plays it back in his head. How he laughed when Elliot mentioned going on the quad together. How Elliot managed to sway him and put the only helmet on him so he can drive. How Elliot’s last words were that it was going to be alright, right before they crashed head-on into a tree.

Ultimately, it was just more grief and now guilt that she shelved, but he started to crack. By the time he was in The University of Queensland for his undergrad, Brodie was always high or drunk. He lost his love for hockey, over-trained his body when he barely ate. He became a drug dealer when he dropped out of college, owing someone and then falling into the scheme to pay them back for all the drugs he just 'put on his tab.’ He was able to pay the person off, but the money and easy access was too hard to not pass up.

Brodie was able to gather up the strength to get clean…. once…. twice… The relapses hit so hard, he almost gave up before he got into a trade school and became a mechanic. Now living in Brisbane, Brodie is trying to navigate being on a tightrope of sobriety under the radar.

Brodie is self-destructive. It’s a cry for help, but he doesn’t want to take the necessary steps on getting help. He’s overly cocky, but it’s for show. He’s used to wearing a mask, seeing that he’s been wearing a strong one since he was 7 years of age. Brodie is comical, though he has a tendency of cracking jokes at the wrong time. Fun-loving and a bit of a himbo, the Sato male genuinely is benevolent despite the melancholy hold on his brain. He’s protective of those he cares about, though it can be over-bearing. Brodie is dauntless to the degree of craving danger; He loves to drag race in the early AMs of the night life and is actually known for this amongst a specific population of night owls. He tries to keep people at an arm’s length because he’s petrified of losing people, and tends to hideaway from time to time if it becomes too overwhelming. He loves his coffee black, and though he may seem dull-minded he’s actually very street smart. When someone needs help out of a situation, he’s a great therapist friend but cannot figure out his own problems. He’s just a goofy mess, guys (who really likes women and video games).

Brodie is self-destructive. It's a cry for help, but he doesn't want to take the necessary steps on getting help. He's overly cocky, but it's for show. He's used to wearing a mask, seeing that he's been wearing a strong one since he was 7 years of age. Brodie is comical, though he has a tendency of cracking jokes at the wrong time. Fun-loving and a bit of a himbo, the Sato male genuinely is benevolent despite the melancholy hold on his brain. He's protective of those he cares about, though it can be over-bearing. Brodie is dauntless to the degree of craving danger; He loves to drag race in the early AMs of the night life and is actually known for this amongst a specific population of night owls. He tries to keep people at an arm's length because he's petrified of losing people, and tends to hideaway from time to time if it becomes too overwhelming. He loves his coffee black, and though he may seem dull-minded he's actually very street smart. When someone needs help out of a situation, he's a great therapist friend but cannot figure out his own problems. He's just a goofy mess, guys (who really likes women and video games).

Masonry Monday: The Case of the Sardonic Sergeant

Sgt. Joseph Dexter is caught in a mystery when money supposedly destroyed by the Army in the Philippines turns up stateside over a decade later -- and his superior, the finance officer, starts acting squirrely. When the officer's wife finds him dead, a clumsy cover-up leads to Sgt. Dexter being charged in his murder. Out of guilt, she engages the services of Perry Mason on is behalf.

Who's Who

Perry Mason's client: Master Sergeant Joseph Dexter, a clerk in the finance office who notices a problem with the payroll money

The victim: Major Frank Lessing, the finance officer, who's connected to stolen money that was supposed to have been destroyed

Suspects: Helen Lessing, the victim's wife, who tries to cover up what she thinks is her husband's suicide Howard Evans, Helen's brother, a civilian who worked in the finance office and kept an eye on Maj. Lessing for his sister Walter Haskell, the chief cashier at the finance office, who's trying to maintain his much-younger girlfriend Master Sergeant William "Smitty" Smith, a malaria-ridden soldier who returned from Manila at the same time as the stolen money Rikki Stevens, a woman from Manila who's mixed up with several of the soldiers -- though apparently against her will

The Setup

It's Camp Gracie, at the Military Police Headquarters. Two NCOs are summoned to Captain Kennedy's office, and he introduces Mr. Blake of the Treasury Department. He presents a $20 bill to one of them, Master Sergeant William Smith, and asks which of them used it at a local bar. Sgt. Smith confirms it was him, but he got it in a card game and he's not sure who gave it to him. The other players included the man with him, Staff Sergeant Burke, several other players, and Sgt. Dexter, the chief clerk in the Finance Office.

After they go, the Lieutenant taking notes looks at the bill -- it looks good. Cpt. Kennedy clarifies it's not counterfeit, but it shouldn't exist. Blake tells the Lt. that the Army burned $10 million to keep it out of enemy hands before the surrender in Corregidor Island, that bill supposedly among them. They estimate $400,000 has been stolen. All the bills have been traced to Camp Grace. Out of the eight men who were supposed to destroy the money, six are dead; one is Tony Cusick, wanted for desertion; and one is Major Frank Lessing, their current Finance Officer.

In the Lessing house, Mrs. Helen Lessing tells Cpt. Kennedy on the phone that she doesn't know where her husband is -- as Maj. Lessing stands next to her listening. She implores him to tell her what's wrong. He reassures her there's nothing wrong and he'll talk to Cpt. Kennedy when he's ready. She leaves to take their kids to a birthday party. Later, Maj. Lessing enters the Finance and Accounting Office and passes assistant cashier Howard Evans, who quietly reassures Helen that her husband is there and that he (Evans) will speak with him.

As Maj. Lessing retrieves something from the safe, Master Sergeant Joseph Dexter enters and tells Lessing that Cpt. Kennedy and Blake questioned him. He told them that only Maj. Lessing had the combination to the safe, but Maj. Lessing corrects him: Sgt. Dexter himself knows the combo, but he's not supposed to. Sgt. Dexter confronts Maj. Lessing: When he went to the bank to pick up the payroll money, the bank also gave him the serial numbers of the bills. Sgt. Dexter checked the bills in the safe before Cpt. Kennedy and Blake arrived: The bills aren't the same.

Maj. Lessing gets angry at Sgt. Dexter, who quietly says his transfer request is in the Major's desk drawer. It's tucked under a small pistol. Maj. Lessing signs off on the request and relieves Sgt. Dexter of duty. They both storm out of the office, Sgt. Dexter locking up his desk. After he goes, another man in the office, Haskell, gets a phone call and tells the person on the other side not to call him at the office.

Enter Perry Mason, Attorney at Law

In Perry Mason's office, Della announces Maj. Lessing, who asks that she doesn't take notes of his meeting with the attorney. He explains that he plans to disclose a crime -- possession of stolen funds -- the next morning to Cpt. Kennedy, Camp Grace's criminal investigator. He wants to retain Perry as counsel and offers $1,500 as retainer. Perry tells him to give the whole details. Maj. Lessing says coming clean will destroy his wife and daughters, but it must be done. Perry agrees to meet him the next morning in his office.

It's 10 pm at Camp Grace, Sgt. Dexter is in the Finance Office, and can't find his transfer request, which he tossed into the outbound tray. The return to quarters bugle sounds, and he leaves. Later, at around 3:30 am, Helen wakes up, having dozed off in her living room. She notes her husband still isn't home. She calls his office and there's no answer. She quickly dresses and goes to the office -- the door is open. She enters Maj. Lessing's office, and finds his body slumped over at his desk, the pistol in one hand and a note in the other.

Helen bursts into tears when she realizes her husband is dead, then takes the note from his hand. It's addressed to her, and confesses to using his office to dispose of stolen money. She crumples up the note, puts it in the ashtray, and burns it before throwing the ashes out of the window. Then she makes a mess of his desk and the room, pries the gun out of his hand, and wipes it off with her handkerchief before dropping it on the floor. She then calls Cpt. Kennedy and tearfully reports her husband murdered.

The Murder

Perry Mason arrives on base the next morning at the Lessing house. Evans opens the door and allows Perry in, introducing himself as Helen's brother. Perry already heard the news from Cpt. Kennedy in Maj. Lessing's office. Evans says Maj. Lessing told him about meeting Perry and asks if anything the Major said could give a clue as to his killer. Helen enters and Perry gives her the envelope containing $1,500 back.

The doorbell rings, and Cpt. Kennedy enters. He apologizes to Helen for having suspected her husband. They believe Sgt. Dexter killed her husband. Helen tries to protest his innocence, but Cpt. Kennedy leaves. Helen tells Perry that Sgt. Dexter didn't do it, and returns the retainer, begging Perry to defend him. She says she knows he's innocent, but won't say how. In the Stockade, Sgt. Dexter protests ignorance of the Corregidor money and insists he's been framed.

They found $10,000 of the stolen money in his footlocker and $50,000 in the finance office safe. Sgt. Dexter says he was sure Maj. Lessing made the substitution, but now he isn't sure. He and Evans picked up the payroll money the morning before, then turned it over to Maj. Lessing. It was out of his sight twice: Once when he went back into the bank to cash Maj. Lessing's personal check, and then when Haskell, the chief cashier, counted the money. Sgt. Dexter swears on his word of honor that he didn't kill Maj. Lessing, and Perry believes him, agreeing to represent him.

Paul meets Perry with a list of all the finance office employees who were on the base the night before. Haskell, Paul notes, has a much-younger girlfriend named Rikki Stevens. He's been maintaining her somehow despite his low salary. Perry tells him to ask Rikki herself. Later, Paul visits a local bar and sits next to Rikki, who seethes as Sgts Smith and Burke catcall her. She tosses a drink on him and threatens him with a broken glass.

Paul approaches her and offers to buy her a drink. She agrees, and the bartender apologizes for Sgt. Smith. He was in Manila 7 months previously but was sent back when he caught malaria. Paul notes Rikki arrived on base at the same time, and she immediately gets her back up. She refuses to let Paul pay for her drink, tosses down a $5, and leaves. Paul pays the bartender $10 for him to keep the bill and examines it closely. Perry visits Haskell's home and questions him about Rikki. Perry tells him at least one of the stolen bills has been traced to her. Haskell refuses to speak further.

In Perry's office, Della gives him a manual on court marshal proceedings, and he preps for his defense with the appointed defense counsel, Cpt. Ralph Stewart. Evans calls the office and puts Helen on. She tells Perry that her husband committed suicide and she burned the note. He asks if she'd be willing to tell that to Cpt. Kennedy, and she agrees. They go to meet at his office.

45 minutes later, Cpt. Kennedy asks if Helen can remember the exact words in the note. She can -- and is shocked when Cpt. Kennedy begins to read them to her. She asks how he could get the note. Cpt. Kennedy says Maj. Lessing didn't write it. Perry asks why Sgt. Dexter hasn't been released. Cpt. Kennedy doesn't answer, but tells Helen that her husband didn't commit suicide, but tried to protect Sgt. Dexter. Helen faints.

The Court Marshal

At the military court, the court marshal gets underway. Sgt. Dexter pleads not guilty. The prosecutor, Major Lewis, calls Sgt. Jean McKnight to the stand. She works at the message office, and she testifies that Sgt. Dexter's request for a transfer vanished between 9pm the previous night and when she returned the next morning. On cross, Mason tries to question McKnight, but Maj. Lewis objects.

Maj. Lewis questions Cpt. Kennedy, who says that the MP patrol reported Sgt. Dexter entered the finance office shortly after Maj. Lessing did the night of the murder, leaving 15 minutes later. The autopsy shows Maj. Lessing died between 9:30 and 10:30 that night. Maj. Lewis asks him to identify a typewriter ribbon, which Cpt. Kennedy says he removed from Sgt. Dexter's typewriter. It's possible to "read" a clean typewriter ribbon with a magnifying glass.

Cpt. Kennedy starts to read the words on the ribbon, the same as the suicide note. Mason objects, as there's no connection between Sgt. Dexter and the note. Maj. Lewis will establish the connection, and asks Cpt. Kennedy if Maj. Lessing could have typed his note on Sgt. Dexter's typewriter. Cpt. Kennedy says no, as it was typed by a touch typist based on the evenness of the letters on the ribbon. Maj. Lessing was not a touch typist, but Sgt. Dexter was, and his desk with the typewriter in it was locked.

On cross, Mason asks about the Corregidor money, and whether they have any evidence that Sgt. Dexter was connected to the plot to steal it -- they don't. Regarding the $10,000 found in Sgt. Dexter's footlocker, Mason asks whether it would be unobserved while the Sergeant was out of his room -- it would. He then asks Cpt. Kennedy about the lock on the desk. Mason points out it's a simple lock that can be picked with any small object, and Cpt. Kennedy confirms there have been complaints about that. Cpt. Kennedy also confirms that 212 people on base are touch typists.

Rikki Stevens enters court. Maj. Lewis asks Sgt. Smith about the Corregidor bill he used in the card game, and Sgt. Smith said Sgt. Dexter introduced it -- it was the only $20 in the game. Mason has no questions on cross, but reserves the right to recall him if needed. The next day, Maj. Lewis calls Haskell to the stand. Haskell says that, when he received the payroll money, some of the bills were scorched, and that Sgt. Dexter had sole possession of the money.

On cross, Mason asks if Haskell could have switched the money -- he says it's possible, but he denies it. He presents him the $5 bill Rikki used at the bar, which is also scorched. Mason also has a receipt for Rikki's rent, which Haskell paid for. Haskell confesses that he has given Rikki money, but not because she's his mistress -- she's his daughter, who he had in Manila 25 years previously. She left Manila in 1949 to visit him, then returned to Manila 8 months previously. He protests he wouldn't involve her by giving her the stolen money.

Later, in Perry's office, he's pacing as he says there's something about the case that's not adding up. Then he looks through the personnel records that Paul got for him, and immediately sends Della out to verify certain fingerprints, while he gets on the phone to call Camp Grace's surgeon, who examined the body . . .

In Summation

This is such a difficult episode for me to watch, but not because there's anything wrong with the mystery itself. It's the tiny little factual errors that they get wrong with regards to the military details. I know it wouldn't even tickle the brain of the average civilian, but I grew up on a military base and my mother worked in a military museum, so I had errors like these pointed out to me in almost every film and TV show we watched that involved the Army. I know that I probably have made a few small errors of my own in this post -- I'm not perfect, but I'm also not writing a military script!

It starts right at the first line: Cpt. Kennedy greets the NCOs entering his office by saying, "Which one of you is William Smith?" He should have said, "Which one of you is Master Sergeant William Smith?" or, "Which of you is Master Sergeant Smith?" Soldiers don't properly salute each other, especially not when they're dismissed. Nobody uses military time. I could buy civilians possibly working in the finance office, but not that Maj. Lessing would walk around out of uniform. Credit where it's due, though: Most of the soldiers wear the correct patches and insignia, but the rest of it still gives me the itch.

Although, speaking of errors, I would like to personally take accountability here for something. I have said in the past that I appreciate that Perry Mason makes the effort to cast Asian or Asian-American actors to play Asian characters (not a given for the time period). I have also pointed out that the series sometimes inverts racist tropes, particularly in "The Case of the Empty Tin," when Gow Loong says he plays into the expectation that he'll speak "broken English" to divert attention from himself. It was naïve of me, but compared to some of the other media I've watched from the same time period, Perry Mason seems relatively progressive.

That's why it was such a shock to me to watch this again and hear Paul refer to Rikki Stevens' mother as "definitely an Oriental." I had to pause, because the reminder that this show is a product of its time -- no matter how much I might wish it otherwise -- was pretty abrupt. But that is the case, and it sucks because Rikki Stevens teeters on the verge of the aforementioned trope subversions. She doesn't speak with a ridiculous "Asian" accent, she's played by an actress of at least some Filipino heritage, and the inference that she was an exotic dancer in Manila is implied to be Smith stereotyping her rather than an actual fact.

Uh oh, art dump!

I've been away far too long, I need to post some art that was completed in the meanwhile. So have a bunch of art.

This is Ærin, a human who ended up becoming a cyborg. I plan on writing them into a story as a secondary character of a Sci-Fi story idea I've been sitting on for literal years.

These are the ponysonas of my husband and myself (from left to right)! It was just a cute and quick drawing and my husband loved it.

This is Caloré Flare, a pyromancer, and Nathan, a skeletal horse! They're from the game World of Warcraft (avid fans would have noticed and asked me why I mentioned it) and this is my most favorite traditional drawing I have ever so far. Yes, They are both on the same level of ground. Nathan is very tall and Caloré is only 5'1".

Master Chief riding a great white shark that I have decided to name Sharkie. This was a wood burning project that my husband and I collaborated on together. I did the sketch, and my husband went over it and burned it into the wood. Sadly, I don't have a photo, but it turned out great! Obvioulsy, Master Chief is from the Halo game franchise. First console FPS I played and my favorite still. Hilariously enough, I don't play it anymore at this time.

A humanized version of my dog, Nula! After all, how else would an energetic Jack Russel mix look?

Loradel Darkflight, blood elf blood knight. I enjoy playing as him and there's a huge family dynamic with him and other characters I have. All of the blood elves I have are connected (except for one) in some way. Even the one void elf.

I have to put these side-by-side as it's a redraw! Ten years between these drawings! Both were drawn for my now husband! We had met in college back in 2010 and have occasionally messaged off and on until it became more regularly when we started dating in late 2019. One year into our two year engagement, I drew the redraw for him! I was quite pleased with the improvement! Funnily enough, I knew nothing of My Little Pony, then.

My ponysona in their earth pony disguise. Only after I finished the drawing did I realize that the mouth was a bit on the long side. Reminded me of the "horses with dog mouths" trend a while back. It's canon, now.

Not only is this cat a reminder that I really need to work on my proportions, but it's also a birthday gift to my little sister as a nod to her nickname from her deadname with the blooms of a sunflower as a nod to her new chosen name! She has this hanging up in her home in a frame. I am a bit bashful about it.

I mean, you see that arm, right???

Just a few sketches of my ponysona doing a couple of poses.

Keeping the pony trend going, we have Balanced Scales! An r63 and r59 (is that the AU internet rule?) of Phoenix Wright from the Ace Attorney franchise. I dove deep into that fandom a while back after looking around on YouTube for some MLP fanfics and saw the crossover there. It was some pretty good work, imo! So I just went, "What if there was a female pony version of Phoenix?" and it kinda spiraled from there... I made the whole cast in Pony Town.

Finu the Helpful! A skittermander biohacker! I played this menace in a Starfinder game with my friends. She's basically if Medic from TF2 had a small mascot character that learned medicine. She ate anything biodegradable and had no issues shooting her allies with needles as much as her foes. Her allies were indeed thankful that those were loaded with boosts and healing potions...

She also once ate a mushroom that was hacking into their ship's computer. That was fun.

HE IS THE SAND DRAGON! DRAGON OF THE SAND! I mostly drew this while thinking of that time in the comic Looking For Group when the party encountered the Sand Dragons. Especially when Richard turned one of them into glass.

A book cover for my story Teamwork (found on AO3, Fanfiction.net, and FimFiction) that I had some fun with. On the cover, we have Breezefeather with the left half in her natural pegasus form and the right in her human disguise! Might make more art of that story at some point. We'll see...

Another story! Cover art of My Little Ninja (also on AO3, FanFiction.net, and FimFiction). I had a lot of fun with the background for this. I'm more than a little upset that the cover just doesn't want to be allowed for some reason on FimFiction... Is it the explosion? If so, wack...

So far, that's all I've got that I would like to share. Some of these may be a repost, but that's fine. I still like them all!
