Legendarium by Christopher Nelson
Sauron: The First Age
"Sauron was become now a sorcerer of dreadful power, master of shadows and of phantoms, foul in wisdom, cruel in strength, misshaping what he touched, twisting what he ruled, lord of werewolves; his dominion was torment."

Finrod, also known fully as Finrod Felagund, was a Ñoldorin Elf who was born in Aman, He was King of Nargothrond and the eldest son of Finarfin and Eärwen, and the brother of Galadriel, Angrod and Aegnor. Finrod was one of the noblest elves of the House of Finarfin and a friend of Men.
Finrod` oarth to Barahir
"It was Barahir of the House of Bëor who saved his life, and Finrod swore an oath of abiding friendship and aid in every need to Barahir and all his kin. As a token he gave Barahir his ring, which became known as the Ring of Barahir."
Minas Tirith of Beleriand
Minas Tirith was the tower on the island of Tol Sirion that guarded the Pass of Sirion. It was built by Finrod Felagund to prevent the forces of Morgoth from invading Beleriand from the plains of Ard-galen.

After Finrod built Nargothrond, he handed over control of the watchtower of Minas Tirith to his nephew, Orodreth, before it was captured by Sauron and renamed Tol-in-Gaurhoth, the "Isle of Werewolves".

I feel like there's something about Seth without memories that always gets to me. Now, the thoughts began because of the one dragonwatch book, but I've had more AU ideas and heacannons and such since then. It's just in the fact that Seth is kind to those he is loyal to, and he trusts them more than anything.
In my opinion, he's done so many things out of loyalty, out of trust. He talked to a demon to try and help save the preserve, he killed a revenant to help give his family a chance, and even after someone he was loyal to died (despite the guy not being great), Seth figured out a way to give them a way to win again. He's so loyal and it shows in everything he does and he's so kind because of that. If he's loyal to them, he is kind to them and anyone they trust by extention.
So when he loses his memory, who is he supposed to be kind to? Who is he supposed to trust? If people aren't telling him the truth, then who can he trust? Without trust there can't be loyalty and without loyalty he can't afford kindness. It's like a usually kind, docile animal backed into a corner. What other choice does one have when backed into a corner?
And even if he got his memories back, there's still the lingering feeling of 'I didn't trust you' from before. You would still have the memories of both versions of you, and there is a version of you that did not trust the people in front of you. Why? Why didn't you trust them? Why didn't you believe them? There had to be a reason. Can you be kind? Can you be kind if the very people you were most loyal to, you doubted in your time of need? You needed anyone, anything, and you couldn't trust them. What does that mean for your relationship? How can you ever be so freely kind again?
I don't know. Or maybe it's just 1:16 in the morning and I'm emotional about Seth Sorenson again. (And this isn't just talking about master of the phantom isle, this is talking about any au or idea I or others have had about memory loss Seth) (This is half thought out and I might delete it later)

Rereading Master of the Phantom Isle (Dragonwatch book 3) and Kendra is literally breaking my heart right now. I don't care what anyone says. Seth and Kendra are closer than they appear.
"Could she tell Newel everything she felt? That her brother was more important to her than Wyrmroost? That part of her would rather all the preserves around the world fell into disarray if it meant she could have Seth back?"
Like girl I can't you're crushing my heart

Is Ancient Magus Bride Gothic?
A story about a vulnerable orphan girl, abused and haunted, who is welcomed into the home of a mysterious older man - this could be the summary of Ancient Magus Bride or Jane Eyre. Rochester’s home is even called Thornfield Hall!
Author Kore Yamazaki set her story square in the ancestral homeland of Gothic literature, but it is not clear that she meant to write a Gothic romance. In several interviews she lists her influences as folk and fairy lore from the British Isles, but she does not make reference to any Gothic novels:
“I grew up reading a lot of fantasy books about fairies. A lot of them took place in England. It was a place that was very close to my heart.” 2017 Interview
“I usually read books on mythology and folklore, and I often have a stock of ideas that I can use in development. Perhaps it's because I don't think of fantasy as something that can't happen in reality, so I create a story where humans meet fantasy in an ordinary way. ” 2021 Interview
(If you know of any interviews in which she does make reference to Gothic literature please let me know!)
Is Ancient Magus Bride Gothic? Some people might say no, it’s not Gothic because it’s Fantasy. I usually see it described as “dark fantasy.” But there are enough traditional Gothic motifs that make the question worth asking.
I used professor John Bowen’s list of Gothic motifs as a guide. Let’s start with ways Ancient Magus Bride is not Gothic and work through Bowen’s list.
Strange Places - It’s not the House
Most lists of Gothic motifs will include a castle or a rotting mansion. Bowen’s list did not specify that the “strange place” motif must be an old house, but even so, Elias’ home does not qualify as Gothic. It is cozy, well lit, the garden is neither secret nor overgrown, and even though his housekeeper is a banshee and its master a mage, it is not a haunted house or even very creepy.
A World of Doubt
Bowen writes “Gothic is … a world of doubt, particularly doubt about the supernatural and the spiritual.” In Gothic novels like the Secret Garden, and the Phantom of the Opera, there is persistent doubt about what is causing the action, something supernatural or something human? But this is not the case in AMB. There is never any doubt that magic and spirits are real and that they do influence the human world. We know from the very beginning what is haunting Chise. Chise has a lot of doubt about Elias, but she knows he isn’t completely human and that doesn’t frighten her.
Crisis
Bowen states that the Gothic is a way “to try to master and understand enormous [political] changes.” Gothic literature written in the nineteenth century often addresses the moral rot stemming from colonialism and slavery. There could be no Thornfield Hall without first a Jamaican sugar plantation. But Elias doesn’t live in a manor house. He isn’t really even British. AMB reads as a love letter to England from Yamazaki. It is definitely not a critique of nineteenth century colonialism.
Those are a few ways Ancient Magus Bride doesn’t fit into the Gothic tradition. Let’s explore some ways that it does:
Power and Constraint/Eroticism
Bowen writes, “The Gothic world is fascinated by violent differences in power, and its stories are full of constraint, entrapment and forced actions.” The subversion of the power dynamic between Chise and Elias is central to AMB. Chise begins the story with no agency at all; Elias has every power over her. While that dynamic shifts with time, the story poses burning questions: What does it mean that he owns her? What does he mean when he says he wants to make her his bride? What is marriage, really?
Bowen writes that gothic plots are “often driven by the exploration of questions of sexual desire, pleasure, power and pain.” Chise is full of questions about how she feels about Elias. While not clearly sexual, the contrained physical relationship - full of face touching and hair stroking - at least presents the questions: What kind of marriage will it be? Can they even?
The obsessive nature of their love is perhaps the most Gothic element of the story. Elias’ jealousy drives him to literal, monstrous hunger for Chise. And it doesn’t even scare her. This is Wuthering Heights territory.
Chapter 31: Forgive and Forget
The Sublime
Bowen credits philosopher Edmund Burke with the concept of the Sublime: “When danger or pain press too nearly, they are incapable of giving any delight, and [yet] with certain modifications, they may be, and they are delightful, as we every day experience.” There are many moments when Chise is overwhelmed or astonished, either by the beauty or terror of the world Elias shows her. Think about the first time she rides a dragon, the first time she uses her wand to fly on her own, the moment she wakes up in the fairy kingdom. These are scenes of fantasy, but they evoke in Chise a sense of fear and wonder. There are darker scenes of the sublime too - when Elias holds her in his jealous jaws or when she holds Cartaphilus in her arms, covered in blood and surrounded by a mesh of thorns.
The Uncanny
Bowen credits Freud with the concept of the Uncanny as seen in Gothic literature, defined as “...that class of the frightening which leads back to what is known of old and long familiar.” The question hanging over Elias Ainsworth is: Just how human is he? Aside from the times he uses a glamor, Elias does not try to hide his skull head. But he does take on the pretense of a man. The way he dresses, the way he holds his tea cup, his talk of marriage, all so very human. But also so very fake. I wrote a little more about this in my comparison of Elias and Erik (Phantom of the Opera).
Oberon & Elias in Chapter 8: The Faerie Queen
The Macabre
Not on Bowen’s list, but on mine. Are Chise and Elias meant to reference the Death and the Maiden motif? Elias’ wolf-skull head does make me think about death and mortality, even if he isn’t meant to embody death. Depressed and suicidal, death is very much on Chise’s mind. She is not afraid of death just as she is not afraid of Elias. Elias does carry fatal power. While he saves Chise’s many times over, he is always ready to destroy anything that gets in his way.

the seth sorenson self-hatred saga
or: an excessive compilation of quotes by someone who should probably be doing actually productive things
“I knew it might be a trick,” he sobbed. But that baby looked so real. I thought they might have kidnapped him to use him as bait. I thought I could save him.”
“You were trying to do the right thing.” She attempted to hug him once more, but he pushed her away again.
“Don’t,” he snapped.
“I didn’t mean to blame you,” said Kendra. “You were acting like you didn’t even care.”
“Of course I care! You don’t think I’m terrified to go down there and find out what I did?”
“You didn’t do it. They tricked you. I would have opened the window if you hadn’t.”
“If I would have stayed in bed none of it would have happened,” Seth lamented.
(Fablehaven, “Midsummer Eve”)
Shaking his head, Seth bowled the ball again and picked up the spare. “I don’t think Nero could follow me off the preserve. Maybe I should just take the gold and go. Then everyone will be out of danger.”
“Stop pitying yourself.”
“I’m serious.”
“No you’re not,” Kendra said, exasperated. “
If you take off, Olloch will hunt you down and eat you.”
“Better than having everyone hate me.”
(Fablehaven: Rise of the Evening Star, “Betrayal”)
Seth hugged himself miserable, gripping handfuls of his shirt. He wished he could stop existing. He had ruined everything!
“I will leave you with your life, Seth.”
“Why bother?” Seth moaned.
(Fablehaven: Keys to the Demon Prison, “A Promise Kept”)
“You might like to believe you once belonged among them,” Ronodin said. “Let’s imagine you did. Even if that were true, somewhere in your hypothetical past, you don’t belong there anymore. It’s too late for you. In their eyes, your crimes are too great. In their eyes, your nature is too dark. They’ll lure you in, take what you offer, then zip you into straitjacket and leave you in a cell.”
“Maybe I belong locked up,” Seth said. “Maybe you do too.”
(Dragonwatch: Master of the Phantom Isle, “Everbloom”)
Seth slumped forward and puked onto the marble floor. He could not control the sobs. He was a murderer!
[...]
“I’ve destroyed the things I cared about most,” Seth said. “I’ve been my own worst enemy.”
“You didn’t know,” Calvin said. ‘Ronodin lied to you. He used you.”
“I let Graulas get free,” Seth said. "Before my memory loss. IT got Coulter killed. And now I’ve done worse. I’ve sabotaged us all.”
“You parted ways with Ronodin,” Calvin said. “You figured that out on your own.”
“I need to get out of here,” Seth said. “I abandoned Kendra on a hill surrounded by dragons, in order to break some stupid stone and get my memories back. Careful what you wish for, Calvin. I earned these memories. People paid for them with their lives. they're mine to own.”
“We still have a war to fight,” Calvin, said. “And a curse to break.”
Seth squeezed his head between his hands. “Kendra will do better without me. How is anyone supposed to trust me? I don’t trust myself!”
(Dragonwatch: Champion of the Titan Games, “Treasury”)
Seth had found that he could keep warm by wrapping his wings around himself. But at present, he kept them folded behind his back, even though he was shivering. He wanted to suffer. He deserved to be locked up.
[...]
This cell was too good for him.
He flexed his fingers of the hand he had used to bisect the Wizenstone. He could move that arm now, but not all sensation had returned. Part of him hoped the injury permanent. There needed to be external evidence of how bad he felt inside.
[...]
Seth waited silently in the damp dimness. Maybe he would stay incarcerated forever. Maybe Ronodin would come for him. Seth wiped his runny nose with the back of his hand. He could finally receive a punishment proportionate to his crimes.
[pretty much this entire chapter]
(Dragonwatch: Champion of the Titan Games, “Old Debt”)
“Wraiths are the friends I deserve,” Seth muttered. “I’ve worked with darkness too much, for too long.”
“You lost your memories,” Calvin said. “And you had dark guides deliberately deceiving you. Even so, you ended up resisting darkness rather than embracing it.”
“My powers are dark,” Seth whispered. “I can wield weapons that good people can’t even touch. Look at Vasilis.”
“It is dark red,” Calvin conceded. “But it’s fiery, and flames are full of light. You’ll overcome to shadows.”
“I’m a shadow charmer,” Seth said, “not a shadow conqueror.”
(Dragonwatch: Return of the Dragon Slayers, “Escape”)
Staring at the deep blackness of the Unforgiving Blade, Seth felt a pull similar to the irrational urge to jump he sometimes felt at the edge of a cliff. The blade seemed to promise nothingness, an end to thought, an end to existence, an end to pain and worry.
What if he died collecting the stone from Celebrant? Many of his problems would be over. He wouldn’t have to face Kendra and his grandparents after having released the undead from the Blackwell. Nobody would have to pretend to accept him after all the harm he had caused. He wouldn’t have to find a way to accept himself.
(Dragonwatch: Return of the Dragon Slayers, “Duel”)
Tears stung his eyes.
Home was down there.
And there was no going home right now.
Maybe ever.
Bad things happened around him. After he spent a day with his cousins and the satyrs, Newel had a crippling lifelong injury. then Seth had to disarm Knox to keep him from exploiting a weapon of great evil. A weapon Seth had brought among them.
(Dragonwatch: Return of the Dragon Slayers, “Homecoming”)
He had seen himself. Unable to die.
“Kill me,” Seth pleaded.
(Dragonwatch: Return of the Dragon Slayers, “Prison”)
“I’ve done things that can’t be reversed,” Seth said. “I got people killed. I got Agad killed. I started the dragon war. I freed the undead from the Blackwell at Wyrmroost and made it possible for Celebrant to overthrow the preserve. Sure, I had lost my memories, and yes, Ronodin tricked me, but I still made fatal mistakes. I don’t deserve forgiveness.”
(Dragonwatch: Return of the Dragon Slayers, “Source”)

massive tears of the kingdom spoilies
so i started a new save to try doing stuff out of order just bc im curious, so i went straight to korok forest immediately
after a very scuffed phantom ganon fight i talked to the deku tree and he literally just says “you lost the master sword? oh its flying around in the sky for some reason idk. i’ll mark it on your map”
and you just. get a moving marker on your map of the light dragon’s location.
after that i went and did the spirit temple since you don’t actually need to clear the storm around dragonhead isles if you know where to go, you can just drop a hover stone w/ some rockets under the island with mineru’s mask thing and get there that way
at the end mineru gives mostly the same lore dump but then she’s like “so you talked to the deku tree, i take it- then you know where the sword is, go get it” and never actually says anything about what zelda did, why the sword is on a dragon, any of that
also fun fact, you can get to the statue that swaps hearts/stamina before the entrance to the royal hidden passage shows up in the emergency shelter by just going backwards through the whole royal passage starting from hyrule castle- it’s a real pain in the ass but it’s possible

Status Update + Mystery:
Ran into fortuitous WiFi hotspot. Caravan's route of travel slipping below Zero Isle Center towards eastern shore. We're collectively rattled by the porch collapse incident; am wondering if North and West have somehow fused into a single dungeon. Have taken opportunity while everyone's distracted to snoop where I'm not supposed to.
People are being too cagey with info. Need to know why.
Found that Caravan Master Kricketune's study has already been ransacked. Culprit unknown. Bitch stole my idea.
Spotted pages torn out from notebook. Made graphite impression of imprints left behind on adjacent pages. Stole crumpled blotting paper.
(Pictured: The fruit of our labor. Dunno what this is supposed to be.)
Later in secret, Auburn was able to reconstruct this image onto fresh parchment using these resources, sketched with an egregiously grandiose feather quill.
Why would someone want to steal this? Why would someone want to hide this? The cryptid-hunters we've allied ourselves with are hunting for a "Candlewick Phantom" but this doesn't look like what I pictured (granted, I was more-or-less picturing a Shiny Litwick).
Are those feet or does it walk on stilt legs? Is it missing its jaw? What is even remotely candlewick-y about it other than how it may or may not be on fire? Is it Legendary?
Why were me and my friends kept in the dark about this, other than the obvious fact that we're strangers and blatant opportunists who've piggybacked their operation- ooooh thats why.
Does anyone else have thoughts on this? 'cuz we're quite frankly at a loss.

Sauron: The Second Dark Lord: Part 2
Map of Beleriand
With the Two Trees destroyed, the Valar create the Sun and Moon. As the Sun rises for the first time, it marks the awakening of the second Children of Ilúvatar - Men. Morgoth sees an opportunity to corrupt these new beings to his will and travels to the east of Middle-earth, leaving Sauron in command of the war between the dark forces and the Elves of Beleriand.
In the first 455 years of the First Age (FA), Morgoth would only have fairly small victories against the Elves, with the Free Peoples keeping the Dark Lord in check for the most part. In 455 FA, however, Morgoth launches the Dagor Bragollach, or the “Battle of Sudden Flame,” which devastates the plains of Anfaughlith, the realm of Dorthonion, and would mark the beginning of Morgoth’s gradual march toward domination. Upon seeing the devastation across the plain, Fingolfin rides to Angband to challenge Morgoth to single combat. Despite putting up a remarkable fight, Fingolfin is crushed by the Dark Lord.
The death of the High King of the Ñoldor and the scorching of the plains open the door for Sauron to attack the island of Tol Sirion. We are told that, at Sauron’s coming, absolute fear falls upon Orodreth and the defenders of Tol Sirion. The realm falls to Sauron, and he takes control of the great tower of Minas Tirith in 457 FA. Tol Sirion, now ruled by Sauron, is renamed Tol-in-Gaurhoth - the “Isle of Werewolves.”
Werewolves, while only being mentioned in the Third Age by Gandalf, play a much bigger role in the First Age. Not only is Sauron their master, but he is also their creator. These monstrous creatures are bred from the Wolves of Morgoth. Sauron would then imprison evil spirits within the bodies, thus creating the monstrous Werewolves. At times, Sauron also takes on the form of a Wolf himself, in addition to other forms.
After the Dagor Bragollach, Beren, his father Barahir, and a group of Men would operate as outlaws in their former lands of Dorthonion. Hearing of the actions of these Men, Morgoth orders Sauron to wipe them out. Sauron’s Orcs manage to capture one of these outlaws named Gorlim, after he sees what he thinks is his wife, who has been missing since the Bragollach.
“Thus Gorlim is ensnared; and taking him to their camp, they tormented him, seeking to learn the hidings of Barahir and all his ways. But nothing would Gorlim tell. Then they promise him that he should be released and restored to Eilinel, if he would yield; and being at last worn with pain, and yearning for his wife, he faltered. Then straightaway, they brought him into the dreadful presence of Sauron, and Sauron says: ‘I hear now that thou wouldst barter with me. What is thy price?’
And Gorlim answered that he should find Eilinel again, and with her be set free; for he thought Eilinel also has been made captive.
Then Sauron smiles, saying: ‘That is a small price for so great a treachery. So shall it surely be. Say on!’
Now Gorlim would have drawn back, but daunted by the eyes of Sauron he told at last all that he would know. Then Sauron laughs; and he mocked Gorlim, and revealed to him that he had only seen a phantom devised by wizardry to entrap him; for Eilinel was dead. ‘Nonetheless I will grant thy prayers,’ said Sauron; ‘and thou shalt go to Eilinel, and be set free of my service.’ Then he put him cruelly to death.” - The Silmarillion, “Of Beren and Lúthien”
In 460 FA, Sauron sends a force of Orcs to the outlaws’ hideout of Tarn Aeluin, where all are killed, except Beren. Beren continues to operate in the area as a lone outlaw, achieving great deeds against the forces of the Dark Lord. In response, Morgoth sets a high price on Beren’s head, leading Sauron to command a great army of Werewolves and Fell Beasts to search for Beren. This forces Beren to flee south, where he would meet Lúthien and he is tasked by her father Thingol to steal a Silmaril from Morgoth’s crown.
This quest in 465 FA would bring Beren, Galadriel’s brother Finrod, and a group of ten Elves to attempt the passage to the north. Finrod uses his magic to disguise the group as Orcs in an effort to pass by Sauron’s isle unnoticed. However, Sauron has ordered all who pass to report to him. When he notices this band of Orcs passing without reporting, they are captured and brought before him. There, Finrod and Sauron fight in songs of power and, while both possess great strength, Sauron is more powerful. He strips them of their Orc disguises, but cannot determine who they are or what their purpose is. When they refuse to disclose any of this information, Sauron throws all 12 into a dark pit. One by one, they are all devoured by a Werewolf. Even as they are consumed one by one, Beren and the Elves would not betray one another. Finally, Finrod and Beren are the only two who remain. As the Werewolf goes to attack Beren, Finrod fights the Werewolf and, using every bit of his power left to him, kills it. Finrod soon dies of his wounds from the battle.
At this moment, Lúthien comes to the bridge of Tol-in-Gaurhoth and begins to sing. Sauron sees her from his tower of Minas Tirith and knows her to be the daughter of Melian and Thingol. Rather than kill her, he wishes to capture her so that he may deliver her to Morgoth. He sends Werewolf after Werewolf to the bridge, but they are each in turn killed by Lúthien’s companion - Huan the Hound. Finally, Sauron sends Draugluin - the great father of the Werewolves. After a fierce battle with the Hound, Draugluin flees, telling Sauron of Huan before he dies.
Sauron sends no more servants. He will take this battle himself. He takes the form of a Werewolf - said to be the greatest the world has ever seen, and comes to the bridge to fight the Hound of Valinor. So great is the terror of Sauron’s approach that even Huan momentarily recoils from his might. Sauron leaps at Lúthien. She draws her magic veil over his eyes, blinding him and afflicting him with fatigue. Huan then jumps upon Sauron and the two fight their brutal fight. It is said Lúthien is left weak and very nearly unconscious from the force of Sauron’s malice alone. While Sauron fights fiercely, he cannot defeat the Hound. Eventually, Huan traps Sauron within his jaws. In an attempt to escape, Sauron takes the form of a serpent, but still the Hound holds him captive. Finally, he returns to his normal form.
Here, Sauron is faced with a choice. As an immortal spirit, he can abandon his physical form, but it takes a long time for him to regain it. Instead, he yields control of the isle to Lúthien in exchange for his release. Now free, he takes the form of a Vampire, fleeing to Taur-nu-Fuin, where he fills the forest with horror.
Eighty years later, in 545 FA, the Host of the West, led by the Maia Eönwë, comes to Beleriand in an effort to overthrow Morgoth. What follows is the 40-year War of Wrath, an unimaginable battle with uncountable combatants and devastation throughout the lands of Beleriand. In the end, Angband is destroyed, Morgoth is once again captured, bound in chains, and his feet are hewn from under him.
Sauron (who likely took part in the battle), knowing his master is utterly defeated, takes on a fair form and repents of his evil deeds to Eönwë. Eönwë orders Sauron to return to Valinor, where he may repent to Manwë and receive judgment. However, Sauron is unwilling to endure such humiliation. Instead, he flees to the lands of Middle-earth, where he would hide, biding his time. With his master banished to the Void, the time has come for a new Dark Lord - one that would use all his cunning and craftsmanship to bend Middle-earth to his will.

the books I read in 2023
Welp, time to finally face this post and submit it. I'm kind of embarrassed because I am so bad at reading anymore. No explanation, no excuses. I used to read twice this many books as a matter of course, and now I ... like, don't. My TBR barely budged ... I cleared some stuff out thanks to summer camp, but then I got new stuff to fill it back up.
I don't know. Maybe one day I'll start reading again. Not today, though, probably. This year's list has two books on it so far, both of which I'm maybe a quarter into. Ugh.

italics: read it before
bold: read it to my kid in bed
struck: unfinished
I’d read the first ten or so issues of this before, out of interest because I watched the animated series on MTV. This is the first time all the way through and I didn’t realize it was so dark and triggering.
I read this one when mine was a toddler, and remembered it being pretty patriarchal and victorian. Thought maybe it would hit different now that she’s actually teenaged, and ... like, it did! it’s even worse! Absolutely zero of this shit fits a kid who is not 100% straight and searching. I got through four essays and took it back to the library.
I got up through the Bs and then I LOST MY COPY.
The more I read of this, the more I realized I maybe only read the first couple chapters. Still keeping the italics (making up for claiming I never previously read The Maxx).
I subbed a middle school reading class where this was the text. Ended up reading the whole thing across the day.
This could be the last new book I ever read to my own children. We generally don't read to sleep during holiday breaks, instead allowing them to fall asleep in front of a TV. But when school restarted, my youngest (officially a teenager) didn't want me to read to him at bedtime anymore. The end of an era. I may have cried a little bit. I expect the Dave Barry on Christmas Eve tradition to continue at least another year (my oldest likes it and specifically requested it again), but maybe no more new ones.
