Is really funny to me how everyone just agreed that Kai had loving parents and a good childhood

I can imagine that Oogway went with Kai to visit them, after asking him for an hour of course

And Oogway thought that they would be like Kai (cause Kai never really talked about them, not because he was "ashamed of them" or anything, he didn't for their safety, and because there was never a situation where he could mention them lol)

But when they arrived Oogway was surprised when he saw that Kai's parents were actually nicer (and shorter) than their son

And they treated Oogway as a 'special guest', doing parent stuff, like making dinner, asking him if Kai was behaving well, and showing Oogway ink portraits of calf Kai doing silly things like eating grass and stuff

Kai: This is my 'Brother-in-arms', Oogway Kai's parents: We thought that you would never bring one at home, congrats!

How do you think could Kai have identity crisis at some point due to him being a 'halfbreed'? Yeah I understand that kfp is a world of anthropomorphic animals and nations don't really work in our sense but still xd I mean, (back to one of your writings) in childhood he used to be not treated well because of his mongolian roots. Later I think he could have struggled a little if the side he choose to fight (on?by?with? -m not native srry) is the right one. His ancestors from both sides have been historical enemies for generations, Kai probably had a lot to think about

I have a lot of headcanons and thoughts about this specific topic, so I'll try to summarize it as best as I can: to answer it straight: yes and no- it depended on context.

Warning: racism, some foul language

In my headcanons Kai joined up with the Immortal Army (what the Qin state army called themselves), at one point trying to put an emperor Candidate named Lord Bohai into power.

They fought against not only enemy mongolian tribes, but also the huns and the other Chinese states with their armies and emperor candidates, as well as various warlords attempting to seize power at this tumultuous period in history.

Khaltmaa's herd wasn't apart of the coalition of clans that attacked China- they were just traders, a family of nomads moving place to place- they actually left Mongolia to escape the fighting that was going on at the time, and came to the Qin state because it's immense military strength made it relatively stable; however, because they were Mongolian, they were treated only a little better than the enemy clans- “painted with the same brush”, you know how ignorant people are.

Kai received a lot of discrimination and abuse in the army because of this, and they actually blamed his bloodlust and sadism on his mongolian blood, which filled Kai with shame, knowing his mother and her family were peaceful, kind, civilized people from a rich culture; but Kai rose up the ranks quickly to escape the abuse, and flaunted his heritage as an act of defiance. He and Oogway bonded over their foreign backgrounds, because Oogway also suffered similarly, especially from General Jiahao, who never missed an opportunity to make remarks:

To Kai: “Your father must have either been desperate or a sick kind of pervert, to mix good Chinese blood with that of a savage whore; and look what such an ill-fated mating created.” 

And for Oogway:

"What islander dribble are you speaking, now? You came all the way over the seas from your speck of dirt in the ocean, and you can't learn how to speak our language properly? Are all the tortoises where you come from slow in mind as well?"

It didn't help matters when they actually went to fight those mongolian clans. There was talk of Kai joining in with his "breathren", or feeling guilt for cutting down his "cousins" in battle; Kai had no relations in these clans, but it wouldn’t help to explain it. Of course, once Kai and Oogway became warlords, they never heard such talk again.

In light of the trailer Kung Fu Panda 4 being released, I thought I'd share my thoughts on one of favourite scenes in the whole franchise.

In the previous scene, Tai Lung tries to demean Po by calling him a "big fat panda," an insult that Po heard throughout his entire life. And how does Po respond: HE FRICKIN' OWNS IT!!!!!

That's what's so poignant about the message of the movie: it not about changing who yourself, it's about changing how you see yourself. Po's journey was about realizing that the qualities that OTHER PEOPLE saw as burdens, weaknesses, and faults (particularly his appetite and body shape) WERE IN FACT HIS GREATEST STRENGTHS, THINGS THAT ULTIMATELY HELPED HIM SUCCEED!!!!! As Po's father beautifully put it, "to make something special, you have to believe it's special!"

It's a beautiful message, and as someone who's an aroace autisitc, it's one that resonates with me that much more!

how to make your writing be remembered forever and possibly be well loved.

(incredibly stupid and silly fanfiction line at the end of this post) I know that title is incredibly daunting but listen, its very simple. you ready?

MAKE STRONG CHARACTERS

"but kat! surely its not that simple! " nononono listen. bear with me. I want you to think of your favorite thing. Now ask: what do you remember the most about the thing you love? I will go first:

I love team fortress 2. and guess what: this game has been around since 2007, and was in development hell since before I was even born. The game has been around for 16 fucking years. And guess what? in the strong year of 2023 team fortress 2 Is STILL getting memed about. and do you want to know the crazy part? the character designs to the naked eye are not special at all. ok sure from a designer standpoint, these are very well designed characters made so that you can easily tell who they are based on their silhouette. but from the average joe.... tf2 is iconic but overall it looks ok. it doesn't seem special to a stranger to tf2. look at this completely random and arbitrary example of a game in the same genre:

I don't know shit about the characters in overwatch. Yeah i have a BASIC idea on what their personality is like based on voice lines and some videos i guess... but in-game they just exist. these characters are brightly colored, they have beautiful unique designs, hell they have even more diversity such as robots and people from other cultures! but i don't remember shit about these characters. Maybe I remember the ice lady and tracer, but nothing else. and yeah part of overwatch struggling right now is incompetant development, BUT: The characters in team fortress 2 are SO remember-able because the characters have such a vibrant personality. I am an orange box owner, its been a decade and a half and I am still remembering this game and enjoying art about it.

"but kat! that is a comedy game! Overwatch is a very serious game! are you saying comedy is needed to make a character more noticeable?" no. though I think allowing your characters to lighten up every now and then would humanize them. Not full on goofy, just give them something that makes them likeable. and if you cant do that, you can STILL make a compelling character even though they are mostly seriousness. I have an even more awfully thought out example:

kung fu panda is a masterclass in making a serious comedic movie somehow work. Master Oogway.... he isn't a comedic character at all. Yeah we made memes about him, but ignoring that, he is a wise and resourceful person. He is at calm and has faith in this intuition. there are a lot of characters like this. What makes Oogway stand out is that he is also a little bit kooky and sassy.

this youtube clip sums up what I mean. It is a funny line, it fits the character, and It doesn't ruin the seriousness of the moment. Some of the most successful series in history have something about them that has appealed to people. In my opinion: characters with strong personality and interesting traits is always a good way to ensure your writing is successful. The second most important is the characters bouncing off of each other in terms of their chemistry with each other. There is a reason why I spent years playing the first Destiny game and all of the DLC, but I remember fuck all about the characters. I think I maybe remember the bootleg star lord robot guy.

A writing exercise

here is an exercise to get you in the spirit of character making. step 1- get a random character from a random bit of media. In this case let me bring you master Oogway. Step 2- Get a completely different character from a completely unrelated series. I am going to give you Scout from team fortress 2. step 3- write a random ass thing about them interacting. Think about how the characters would react to each other and why. Think about each characters values in life and think about how they would bond and conflict with each other. Think about characters similar to the character they met in the past and how they reacted then, and if they have never interacted, make something interesting with it. Step 4- keep experimenting. Once you get into the spirit you can apply this to any new character you could want to make anyways thats it byeee- "arent you going to do that ?" do what? "make a writing thing about oogway and scout. " ........

Scout: let's go turtle you got nothing on my speed- Oogway: The one who first resorts to violence shows that he has no more arguments. Scout: that sounds like chicken talk! come on tough guy let me have it- Oogway then proceeds to make scout eat shit before vanishing in a cloud of cherry blossoms and dust from the desert. If this post isn't popular I want you to know my dignity was lost for nothing.

SPOILERS!!

I just saw a clip from the Kung Fu Panda 4 movie- the ending part, I believe. It was every Kung Fu Panda villain master in history, from the series, new ones, and of course, the big three. Guys, I love friendship and all, and I'm glad that afterlife!Tai Lung seemed to have gotten over his beef with Po and that whole, dragon warrior stuff, but PLEASE!

All I want is to see Tai Lung and shifu reunite, I don't care in what way. It could be them fighting (though I will cry my eyes out), saving the other mid battle, sitting down for a cup of tea- no matter! I just want them to see each other, I want some insight of their thoughts about the first movie because Shifu loved Tai Lung- LOVES him, I still believe. Yet after the first movie we didn't see any reminiscing, and regret, missing or anything like that on Shifu's end. That is not the behaviour of someone who still sees their big, buff baby boy as just that- A BABY BOY while they're trying to kill you.

Alright...sooo call me crazy but is it just me or Tigress has some connection with flowers a lot? And I mean A LOT!!

First let's start with Tigress's clothing. All her vests & hanfu with floral pattern which throughout the franchise represents her growth

But even before the the whole vine pattern we get to see the same pattern on Tigress's bed when she was still in Bao Gu Orphanage in Secrets of the Furious Five

Next in Secrets of the Scroll when Oogway is talking to Tigress at the Peach tree we see Oogway takes a look at a blossom & tells Tigress "The Question is; Can you be Tigress?" & the same flower flies near her

Next; Every time Tigress get's sick there's always a FLOWER involved to cure her. Now I know LoA isn't considered canon but there's one chapter in one of the KFP comics where the story is sorta similar to LoA's Scorpion Sting's episode where Tigress gets river fever. BOTH in the episode & in the comic there's a flower that's her medicine. Also coincidence in both cases Po (WHO'S BIRTH NAME IS ALSO LOTUS) is the one get's the flowers for her

Next in KFP3 while Po is trying to bloom a flower by using the chi technique the camera immediately zooms to injured Tigress with the flower also being in the shot & later Tigress wearing a flower garland & wearing a little flower on her ear just like Lei Lei.

And finally this is by far the most interesting one which got me screaming!

Viper, Po & Lei Lei ALL 3 who are close to Tigress also represents flowers in someway. Mostly in protective or comfort ways.

Viper as flower is her two little flower clips on her head.

Po who's birth name is LITTLE LOTUS!!

And FINALLY Lei Lei. Apparently Lei in Chinese means a bud of a flower!

I MEAN??? THIS CANNOT BE SOME WEIRD COINCIDENCE RIGHT?!?!? THERE HAS TO BE SOME REASON BEHIND IT??

I maybe overthinking but hey...at least I got all out from my chest. But seriously tho i'm sure there's a good explanation behind this flower connection!!

I don’t know why this took me this long to realize but I think the reason why Kai didn’t use Oogway as a Jombie was because he still cares about him in a way.

I mean, he does talk to the Oogway amulet quite alot:

Also apparently in the novelization of the movie he grasped for Oogway's amulet before he went 'splody so I could certainly believe it!
