FAS 3001- WGSN Trend Forecast AW/23- PT2
After carefully evaluation of the 'creative reset' trend forecast I decided to focus my research on the sub category 'Grunge Romance'. I chose this specific concept due to my own personal tastes as I gear my own style more on the dark 'emo' side of fashion.
Tumblr media
The main stand out for me was the initial colour scheme that the photos on the moodpboard provided with reds, greys and black tones being the forefront colours. The concept describes the trend as showing an imperfect aesthetic with more abstract silhouettes whilst still incorporating skin revealing and 'submersivesexy' features.
Key brands that WGSN listed were Caroline Reznik, Matilda Sundkler and Shauna Wu. After looking through these artists designs I chose to focus on Caroline Reznik and Shauna Wu's work as they both had similar design elements. Caroline Reznik is an Australian based designer who uses shredded fabric and delicate embellishments to create ultra feminine garments. She describes her own work as" Empowering, detail-oriented, handcrafted, streamlined and movement conscious". Her pieces stood out to me due to the combination of torn fabrics which gave the pieces both an unfinished appearance whilst still creating unique shapes and outlines.

Shauna Wu uses headstock and up cycled materials to create unique eye catching pieces which incorporate tied together and knotted materials inspired by traditional Chinese knotting techniques (Maggioni, 2022). I knew straight away looking at her pieces I wanted to incorporate the same materials Shauna Wu uses, especially her strong use of different lace fabric.

Both these designers opt for a more intimate approach to creating garments, using more delicate materials and intricate details. I took inspiration from these elements and decided to focus on more lingerie boudoir styled garments within my finished look books.

Introduction
In this module, I will be creating a lookbook on predicted trends for 2023. I will be using Photoshop and InDesign to make my lookbook. I have chosen to do my lookbook on the predicted grunge romance trend. The concept of this trend is tapping into the emotional rollercoaster and chaos experienced in recent times. This style combines emo, noir and grunge with romanticism. this style uses bodycon silhouettes, cutouts and skin-revealing styles. This aesthetic is imperfect. This style has an unpolished look therefore the use of recycled and excess fabrics, repurposed and leftover trims, and combine in patched and blocked designs. Fabric flaws are a big part of the design. They also favour digital printing to reduce water usage, and they also use colours such as eco-black. There are a few key brands and designers that are emerging with this style; Caroline Reznik, Matilda Sundkler and Shauna Wu. (www.wgsn.com, n.d.) I am going to explore the key shapes and materials of this trend as well as the colour palette. I chose this trend as grunge style resonates with me as well as the use of the fabrics not being perfect and looking unpolished unlike other trends, I also like the variety of different materials used such as the mix of denim and party wear.

Sustainable Designers Linked To Grunge Romance
Matilda Sundkler has stated that her collection 'Nuno Garments' "There are so many sustainable ways to create garments that pose a challenge or are not even considered in production. I think it would be really cool to take ‘Nuno Garments’ all the way like that” She has used waste products to create this collection. My collection ‘Nuno Garments’ is an attempt at proposing a different creation process of garments. It all started with reports stating that huge amounts of Swedish wool are being buried or burnt up as a waste product of the Swedish meat industry. (1granary.com, n.d.)
Shauna Wu also creates ethical clothing she is a designer that is also stated on the WGSN website under grunge romance as a designer to look out for. "I also focus on natural fibres as opposed to synthetics, and source from mills with their own ethical and sustainable codes for producing yarns. Sometimes I source from smaller stores as well that only dye with non-toxic dyes, or use artisanal techniques to create something special.” (Keng, 2018) She also discusses how consumers can be more sustainable Shauna Wu says “In terms of reducing consumer waste, it’s more important to shift a customer’s mentality into understanding how they should love, value, cherish their garments, and spend their dollar on something that matters to them. Sometimes I hope that by sharing so much of my emotion and work, other people will begin to see what I see and love — I think it will make their lives better.” (Keng, 2018) it is important that designers are sustainable but also promote how consumers can be more sustainable as the fast fashion industry is extremely unsustainable, more big brands should promote sustainability through their business and to their customers.
