a compilation of all the fics i recced from 17-27 june. you can find part one here. this mainly includes iwaoi, kagehina, kuroken, a couple of bokuaka and satuatsu, and a few extra others. enjoy!!

Of course it’s depressing, it’s Hanamaki, Oikawa, and Iwaizumi watching Matsukawa be in an emotionally abusive relationship, all the while Hanamaki is in love with him,,,, eyeroll it’s very hard to watch. But, the writing is amazing, the plot is painful but good, so if you’re considering, you definitely should read.

The longest fic I’ve read, and worth every second. I BINGED this mf, like in a couple of days lol and it’s so good. Artist Suga, bartender Daichi, gay panic and basically all of the other main haikyuu characters lol,,,,, read it if that sounds interesting. I think this is probably the staple Haikyuu longfic, so you should definitely check it out at one point or another. Also, it’s SO funny and the writing is rlly good. Oh, and it’s a SLOW BURNNN.

I’ve seen so many people recommend this one, so I thought I’d include it in this recommendation, even though it’s focused around a lot of the ships, not just daisuga. It’s a supernatural hunter fic, and even just the summary is super captivating and interesting. If you like fantasy, mythology, or anything of the demons and magic sort, you should definitely check this one out. There is also some ~~magical~~ romance.

For the sake of your guys’ brains, I included this shorter fic that you could definitely complete in a short amount of time. Basically, this is about coffee barista Daichi, and how he meets Suga, who is secretly homeless. And romance blooms, of course. I definitely recommend this one if you want a short, kind of angsty, but happy ending read.

This fic is so so sooo good. I usually stray away from like shifter, werewolf type fics, but this one handles the trope so so so well. I love the kyouhaba dynamic and this fic exemplifies it without making it too cliche. The premise of the fic is Kyoutani is a dog shifter and Yahaba is a police officer. I really had a great time reading this and I definitely think that you should check it out ahhah.

Yahaba and his self-acceptance journey,,,,ughhhh im crying. This fic is vvvery emotional and filled with angsty self-hatred that makes me :(((. but BUT its worth it because watching him grow :’) and find love in Kyoutani. it’s very warm and happy at the end. If you want a CLASSIC coming of age set in high school and very gay so <33 pls check it out. The plot and writing are really well done and it is a work of art srsly.

Dorothea and Kagehina: I could write an essay on why this song and this ship work, but I’ll keep it short and maybe make everything else into its own post. I see this song as mainly from Kageyama’s perspective - what really sells it on his POV is “if you ever get tired/of being known for who you know/you know you’ll always know me” is just so reminiscent of how Hinata knows so many people. This song also has the whole “friends to one watching the other from a distance while still being entirely loyal” theme that is just so incredibly Kagehina, as well as the way that the narrator describes their high school experience.

Lover and Bokuaka & Matsuhana: For Bokuaka, I mainly associate this song with them because I want them to be happy SO BADLY. But also I think that “can I go where you go?/will we always be this close” line is very Akaashi, while “swear to be overdramatic and true to my lover” is very Bokuto.

For Matsuhana, the lines that make me think of them are “i’ve loved you three summers now honey,” as they’ve known each other for three years, and “swear to be overdramatic and true to my lover/and you’ll save all your dirtiest jokes for me,” because that’s honestly SUCH a them line. (Can you tell that both of these are my favorite ships)

Enchanted and Bokuaka: The basic premise of “I was enchanted to meet you” could go for every haikyuu ship because all of them are kind of built around how the characters influence each other, but 1) Bokuaka deserves this song, 2) their whole thing is quite literally love at first sight (chapter 331) and 3) the lyrics are very Akaashi. “There I was again tonight, forcing laughter faking smiles/same old tired, lonely place/walls of insincerity/vanished when I saw your face” might just remind me of Bokuaka because I’m a sucker for rich and not very happy about rich culture!Akaashi but I also think that it applies to what we know from canon. “I’ll spend forever wondering if you knew/I was enchanted to meet you.” I think that Akaashi feels anxiety over what he means to Bokuto, and this line is kinda that. The theme of this song being love at first sight as well as wanting this person to really know you fits Bokuaka SO WELL.

Mary’s Song (Oh My My My) and Iwaoi: childhood friends to lovers!!!!! I see this song from Oikawa’s POV, with lyrics like “said you’d beat me up you were bigger than me/you never did” and “I dared you to kiss me and ran when you tried” it’s just very Iwaoi yknow? If you want to add some angst, it’s Oikawa looking back on their relationship as he leaves for Argentina :)

Message In a Bottle and Tsukkiyama: Message in a bottle came out literally today so I haven’t analyzed this as much but. “And I became hypnotized by freckles and bright eyes” is so incredibly Tsukki to Yams. This song’s whole message of feeling separate from your crush but wanting to reach out just feels a lot like them, so I associate it.

Gorgeous and Sakuatsu: This song/ship association is so important to me for no reason at all but I’m going to do it justice. This song is definitely from Sakusa’s POV, from specific lyrics to the way that it’s implied that the person singing is more introverted. To start: “you should take it as a compliment/that I got drunk and made fun of the way you talk” is just. Atsumu accent. Yeah. “You should think about the consequence/of your magnetic field being a little too strong” is most definitely their relationship dynamic from Sakusa’s POV, along with “You’re so cool, it makes me hate you so much.” In general, I like when this ship is portrayed with the “i want to kiss him. ew” type feeling, especially when one of them starts realizing Feelings, so “you're so gorgeous/I can't say anything to your face/'cause look at your face/and I'm so furious/at you for making me feel this way/but, what can I say?/you're gorgeous” really holds up. “Guess I’ll just stumble on home to my cats” I just think that Sakusa is a cat person. This paragraph is getting really fucking long so I’ll be quick: outside of the lyrics, the vibe of this song-music, rhythm, etc just feels very Sakuatsu to me, for some reason.

State of Grace and Kagehina: This is from Kageyama’s POV, I mean, “I never saw you coming/and I’ll never be the same” hello? This is like. The first episode and every single one after that. “You come around and the armor falls” really reminds me of how Hinata was the one who taught Kageyama that it doesn’t all rely on him; Hinata took away that “armor” of superiority. “This is the golden age of something good and right and real” is very much how these two changed the team for the better.

This is a really, really long ask answer, so I’m gonna put a read line here so things on my blog don’t get all stuffy, but I think these headcanons were so fun to write and I hope those of you who stop to read them enjoy them!

MatsuHana won the poll because of votes I've had on Twitter, so yay! Honestly, me too. I've been daydreaming a lot about a playful poly relationship with them and I just can't get over the dynamic. How nice it would be to work with Matsukawa during the day (because of my future career plans) and then come home to dinner made by Makki and then all clean up together and cuddle. It's a thought I just cannot let go of

Okay, first of all: I fucking love this idea. Mama's boys end me every time because I just KNOW they won't be a total asshole if they're a loving mama's boy. Second, I agree with the twins for sure, though I think that Atsumu clings to mama Miya a bit more than Osamu does. Like he's the grown up kid who still cuddles with his mom. Whereas Osamu gives me the kind of vibes like he would follow his mother everywhere that they go around the house and never stop talking to her, and even after he moves out I can see him calling her every night on his way home from the store or while he's making dinner

Definitely Bokuto! I think he loves curling up with his mom and running errands with her. He makes me feel like he would love to garden with his mom when he was younger and I think in the future after his mom passes he would take gardening up again and have a little flower patch. Maybe he'd talk to his mom while he planted the flowers and thank her for teaching him everything he needs to know about gardening, only to go to you and sob because he misses her

I agree with Oikawa 100000%. I think he was the clingy mama's boy who would rant and rave to her about every little issue he had while sitting at the table while she makes dinner. She heard about Ushiwaka and Kageyama, and even into his high school years. I think he would FaceTime with her every day when he moves to Argentina because he misses her and he still wants to see and talk to her as much as he can

Picture this: Matsukawa as a mama’s boy. Following her around after school and telling her all about his day. Telling her juicy gossip he hears from Makki because there’s trust that she’d never say anything. Her being the cool mom that he tells absolutely everything to and having such a strong bond with his mom. I think she taught him how to cook and he never forgot her homemade recipes. He loved bringing his s/o home to meet his mom because, uh— hello, his two favorite people in one room? Yes please. And if his mom sensing something off, that person is out. I can see Matsukawa’s mom being like a second mother to Makki as well and thinking of him as another son because of how much time he would spend at their house in his teenage years because he’s Makki and Matsukawa is his best friend

I think that Kyōtani gives off mama’s boy vibes if I’m being honest. Like after losing a match or getting into an argument with a kid at school, I think he would seek comfort from his anger and other people with his mom. Curling up with her on the sofa and eating some yummy food with her. Maybe she teaches him how to bite his tongue a bit better as he gets older and he finally starts listening to her. Kyōtani feels like the kind of guy who wouldn’t appreciate his mom fully until he was a lot older and then see her nearly every day if he could. Calling her on the way home from practice and going “Home” for weekly dinners because his mom’s house is always going to be home

Kageyama as a mama’s boy. Hiding his face in her stomach after a hard day when he was younger and seeking comfort in eating food with her during his shitty middle school days. Talking about his issues with Kunimi and Kindaichi to her after long days and then moving onto Hinata, but before she knows what’s even happening, Kageyama isn’t trashing on Hinata so much anymore and she praises him for that and it encourages him to keep going when he doesn’t know how to use his words

Kuroo as a mama’s boy. Making dinner with her every night, gardening, running errands together on the weekends; even after he moves out, he still frequently comes home to spend time with his mom because they’ve always been close and they’re always going to be, having dinner with his s/o at his families house at least twice a month so that his mom and s/o can have time together because he would love it if his mom and s/o got along. He learned a lot from his mom and he appreciates everything she’s done for him. Kuroo reminds me of a kind guy who would have a fun and playful teasing relationship with his mother as well as respecting her and holding her on a very high pedestal

Suna as a mama’s boy— but not with his mom, with the Miya twins mom. Maybe he has not the best and open relationship with his mother, but I think if he got close with the twins and he made his way to their house, their mother would basically adopt him and treat him as her own. Homemade meals to take home, hugs and kisses to the forehead. Cheek pinches and commenting about how handsome he’s getting as he gets older because she sees him as another son and he gets close to her. He views her as a mother and loves to follow her around with Osamu or call her to tell her about recent accomplishments because he knows that she would be as happy for him as he was happy for himself. Atsumu is jealous, but mama Miya adores Suna and teaches him how to hold himself high and be treated like he deserves to be treated— with love

Akaashi seems like a mama’s boy to me. The kind of guy who loved to learn from his mom and has always held her on a high pedestal because “Wow, my mom is amazing and can do anything!” And that belief never failed for him. I think he leaned to cook, clean, sew, take care of himself, take care of others, etc., from his mother and he’ll never forget that. Because of the way that Akaashi is, I think that he would learn to be respectful to others and his family and never speak cruelly or out of line with someone— all because his mother taught him how to treat even rude people

Oh, god. I went overboard. I love the concept of mama’s boys, and it’s really funny that you send me this because I was just thinking about having a mama’s boy Haikyuu boy as a boyfriend and being treated like a queen because he was raised by the best and taught by the best how to treat and respect women. I have a lot of feelings, anyways… I hope this isn’t too long to read, but thanks for sending these in and letting me get all gushy about our boys!

~ Here we are, this masterpiece is like one of my favorites. So many times I laughed my ass off and the thing that there’s absolutely no ANGST and the ending still made me cry from joy and jealousy, is making me even more in love with this fic! ~ MY FAVORITE! I know I should’ve started WITH my favorite one but I decided to go with my favorite ship (SakuAtsu) in stead! Iwaoi is my second fav ship ever so it was quite hard to pick a favorite fic but soon as I saw this title I needed to go with this one. I love coffee AU so much so it just made me love it more and more! Pinning Kawa and almost oblivious Iwa, what a couple. :D There is a bit of an ANGST but it’s not that bad so you can go ahead.

New phone who dis by meruemsthights (IWAOI fic) 25 chapters | collage/uni/ texting AU

Oikawa texts the wrong number when complaining about Ushijima, and then keeps texting Iwaizumi.

~ Yes, yes, and YES. Just read this recently and it might be my second favorite (IwaOi) one! Iwa being Iwa and the mum jokes are the cherry on top. There is a little ANGST but it’s the biggest part of it which makes it more realistic. I’m really glad I stumbled upon this. :)

Defectio Solis by Moami (KAGEHINA fic) one shot | Karasuno HS

Hinata stops talking to him – and then his smile dies. Tobio is far more bothered than he wants to admit.

~ Guys! I know how the summary looks like but believe me with this one. Even tho there is some ignoring from Shōyō’s side it’s PURE fluf! I was really surprised with the ending, tbh I expected something worse that’ll end up with ANGST but no, it was so adorable that I almost cried. :’)

This gets annoying fast, Makki by Ink_stained_quills (MATSUHANA fic) one shot | Sejioh HS

Hanamaki disease: for an unknown amount of time, Hanamaki Takahiro must go “eyyyy” whenever someone locks eyes with their crush. Thus, of course, it’s going to be pretty damn awkward for Sejioh’s volleyball team.

~ HILARIOUS, I love Mattsun and Makki so much! They deserve more recognition and more fics bc I don’t have a lot of them… :( Again, I laughed my ass off, everything, revolving this ship is total comedy, and I’m weirdly in for it. Sadly it just a one shot so, it’s a minus point but still!

Richer than milk, sweeter than honey by redroseinsanity - kuroken fantasy au ITS SO GOOD GO READ IT the authors ability to put hq characters in these completely new settings is so cool

9) underrated authors: also very difficult. I’m sure I’m forgetting several, but off the top of my head: @saintdabi has a few works whose note count I was kinda appalled by. His writing is really good and deserves a ton of love. Also redroseinsanity on ao3... some of their works have hit counts in the low hundreds when it deserves thousands.

28) how do you deal with negative writing pressure like comments and deadlines? - this blog is relatively small right now, so I don’t feel a ton of pressure. I’m sure I’ll get some hate eventually tho considering this is a dc blog :). However, this is also my second writing blog, and there are a few things I did differently this time: I clarify this isn’t a request based blog(so I can write what I like and turn requests I don’t like down), and I use the log out button very liberally. Also I remind myself this is a tumblr blog and none of it really matters :)))

"You?"

It's just as good as he anticipated. No. Better. Oikawa's face, unattractively contorted in utter disbelief: eyes popping out, mouth gaping open. That handsome profile twisted out of recognition. If the girls could see him now. Matsukawa holds up two hands in a double L shape, framing the moment. It'll keep them both warm all winter long.

Iwaizumi elbows his "best friend" in the side. "Shut up, asshole." To Takahiro: "Congrats, man. Good luck."

"Thanks, Iwaizumi," Takahiro says. "I'll discount your admission to my fan club."

Iwaizumi looks torn between disgust and curiosity. "Are you—really? A fan club?"

"Mattsun's founding member, obviously. But you can get in on the ground floor."

"Pass."

In unison with Matsukawa: "Your loss."

At the other end of the picnic blanket, Oikawa wrenches his jaw shut. "But—but—you!"

"Why not me? Wit. Talent. Charm. And of course—" He strokes his chin with thumb and forefinger. "This face." Matsukawa applauds. Iwaizumi looks mildly repelled, but as long as Oikawa's noisily protesting he won't say a thing. "I think it was mostly the face," Takahiro adds, partly to make Oikawa yowl some more, and partly because he suspects it's true.

"Since when are you an actor!" Oikawa demands.

Takahiro shrugs. "Since spring term."

"Huh," Iwaizumi says. "And you just... got a job? Like that?"

"Signed," Takahiro corrects. "I got signed. Like that."

Matsukawa lays a hand on his shoulder. "Don't listen to the haters, Makki. I always knew you'd make it."

"Thanks, Mattsun. I do have a powerful stage presence and a golden voice."

Oikawa looks suspicious. "I don't believe Makki can sing."

It's like he doesn't know Takahiro at all. Matsukawa smirks, and "Nice going, idiot," says Iwaizumi, as Takahiro opens his mouth.

"I love you baby—"

Oikawa lunges forward and slaps a hand across his mouth. "Mm mmf mf mmm mm mmm—" Oikawa won't budge. Takahiro licks his palm. Oikawa snatches the hand away with a yelp.

Takahiro smacks his lips. "Mm. Tastes like milkbread."

"Anyway," Oikawa complains, "I can't believe you waited until the last week of vacation to tell us, what kind of friends are we."

The obvious answer is You only got home four days ago, so Takahiro says, "Didn't want to upset you." He shakes his head, sorrowfully. "Professional jealousy's never pretty."

"I beg your pardon—"

"I know, I know. You think, it seems so glamorous. And you know what? It is." Oikawa tries to break in; Takahiro talks over him. "But listen, Oikawa – as the great philosopher once said: you can't hurry love. You've just got to wait. And if you like the way you look that much, you should go and love yourself." Oikawa makes a noise like a dying cat. "Then, who knows? The commercials, the interviews, the C-list music video cameos—well, I can't promise anything, but maybe."

It's like a switch is flipped—it always is. Oikawa's expression goes cool and confident, untouchable. The conviction that nearly took them to Nationals. Their captain.

"They'll come," Oikawa says. "When I make the national team. They'll come."

Takahiro trades a disappointed glance with Matsukawa. It takes all the fun out of it when Oikawa gets serious.

Iwaizumi's got his Oikawa Face on, half-irritated, half-proud. All indecent. "You should go to a match," he says. "If you're in Tokyo."

The captain vanishes as Oikawa's face lights up by a thousand watts. "That's right! Me versus Iwa-chan!"

"I'm not a starter yet, dumbass."

"You too, Mattsun! This is perfect, you can be my cheering squad."

"Push it, push it, Trashykawa."

"Hit it, hit it, Trashykawa."

"The two of you are creepy, has anyone ever told you that?"

"What have I said about calling me that!"

"By the way, Shittykawa, your mom's expecting us in thirty minutes."

"Iwa-chan!"

Iwaizumi lingers a moment after Oikawa's loped off for the nearest recycling bin with a bag of their empty cans in tow. "We still on for tomorrow?"

Matsukawa raises a hand lazily. "Same time."

"Same place."

"Same face."

"Same... alien race."

"You deserve him," Iwaizumi informs them. "Or he deserves you."

"I think we all know the only one he deserves is you," Takahiro says, at which Iwaizumi flushes a bright, unattractive red, growls something inappropriate for family programming, and leaves them alone. Too easy.

Matsukawa tilts the hand still suspended mid-air. Takahiro meets it in an equally languid high five and collapses back on the picnic blanket. It's perfect weather, right on the edge of too hot, sweat beading at the back of his neck. Just how Takahiro likes it.

Matsukawa rolls a blade of grass between his lips. Takahiro closes his eyes and lets the sun beat down on his face.

Matsukawa's lazy voice says, "You serious about this?"

"Dunno."

Hard now, basking in the late afternoon sun, insects buzzing over the tumble of water on the rocks, picking up grass stains on his elbows, to explain the itch under his skin all winter. Worse after he quit going to volleyball practice, the slow realization that Seijou had ruined him for casual. Catching sight of a shitty Photoshop flier outside his econ lecture, showing up at auditions on a whim—as a joke on himself.

The moment he opened his mouth and became someone else.

"Didn't know they recruited from college drama circles these days," says Matsukawa.

"Lucky break. Manager's nephew or little brother or something is a TGU alum." Leading Yajima-san to the student production of Whales in the stairwell, leading the poor nephew or little brother to stalking Takahiro on Facebook, leading Takahiro to a strange woman accosting him by the science building and a surreal hour over coffee in Birthday Café and twenty-four hours later a draft contract in his email.

Because Takahiro, half-incredulous half-amused, kept saying Sure, because – why not?

It was sort of their thing. Sure. Why not.

Matsukawa makes a thoughtful noise. "You gonna drop out?"

"Leave of absence." And that only once his parents signed off. "My folks are gonna spot me key money and the deposit and shit. After that I'm on my own."

"Our Hiro-kun, all grown up and leaving home."

"Just following your example."

The words hang there, longer than Takahiro intended, taking on shape, weight.

Matsukawa says, "I knew you were pissed."

"I'm not pissed. Just—"

Just what, anyway.

Matsukawa's waiting. Takahiro can't come up with anything better than a shrug. "I dunno. Didn't expect it."

"If it helps, I didn't expect you to be scouted for your face."

"Guess that's adulthood. Lotta shit no one expects."

"Where's that Tendou dude when you need him," Matsukawa says, but it's halfhearted.

The first real question Yajima-san had asked, after the self-introductions, after the compliments:

Hanamaki-kun, have you ever thought about making this a career?

Sure. Why not.

To be honest, he'd never bothered to think much about where they'd go after high school. He'd always figured it would sort itself out once the world's greatest love story figured their shit out and got rolling on the path to that Olympic gold medal proposal he had ¥1500 at five percent compound interest riding on. The usual suspects would set out to take on the world; the rest of them would pick universities in Sendai and just—be college students.

So when Matsukawa said he'd been accepted to some international school in Akita, it was a little bit of a surprise.

Okay so the writing in this one is very particular, and by particular I mean WONDERFUL. It is, at least for me, unusual and I was greatly surprised when I read it !! It’s kinda weird to say that but you can feel the mess that is Keiji’s mind throughout the writing. Like... it’s... it’s really hard to explain ..it really feels like you are reading Keiji’s raw flow of thoughts: Fast paced, and sometimes interrupted, unorganized, panicked or full of desire mixed with fear... ALSO. The descriptions. You can feel them too. Especially the way Bokuto is described. it is... breathtaking. GO READ IT. (if you don’t mind smut and like a bit of twisted personalities, you’ll enjoy it)

How often do you write?

Fairly often, maybe every other day? It does depend on how busy I am with life/school, but I do try to write whenever I can because it’s a good stress reliever (if the story isn’t frustrating me at least lol)

Do you have a routine for writing?

Not really, usually I need music (I like making playlists for my fics and listening to songs that capture the mood I’m trying to get across). Otherwise, I just sit at my desk, and sometimes I go to the library.

What are your favorite kinks/tropes/pairing?

LOL SUCH A BIG QUESTION. For Kinks/Tropes: uhhh I love a lot of kinks...but especially public sex, I’m very big on that (sexting at work? give me all the fics), also pet play is one of my faves, though I don’t really write it for my current fandom....one day I’ll return. For tropes, I love fluff and childhood friend aus, also soulmate aus, CRIME AUS OMG, and really just unique aus? For pairings: Right now my life revolves around kurotsuki, but I also adore iwaoi, any Semi pairing, Terushima pairings, matsuhana, and bokuaka ^^

Do you have a favorite fic of yours?

I’m really proud of my kurotsuki Pacific Rim fic tbh, as well as Let My Love ^^ Those have some of my best writing imo.

Ugh so much LOL. I think my sentences can get very repetitive, and I have issues smoothly blending actions with dialogue. Writing is hard lol
