Hey, can I make a Matt x Reader request. Reader is a doctor and lives with Matt one evening Matt comes home with Spiderman who needs help. You become surrogate parents for Peter and think about adopting him since he's a son to both of you anyway.
Peter
~ Sorry this took me so long to get to. I had something written at some point but ended up scraping it 😭
~ Fluff, Maybe a little angst bc Peter is hurt at the beginning?

~ Matt brings home a kid ~
Being with Matt you've learned always to expect the unexpected. Matt has a heart of gold, always doing everything he can to help those in need. It's a good thing you're the same way. You wouldn't be a doctor if you didn't have the urge to help people but sometimes Matt, in your opinion, helps people that don't help him far too often.
However, one thing you didn't expect was for your wonderful boyfriend to come home with a kid. Okay maybe not kid, he's about sixteen years old, but that's still way younger than you or Matt. And way too young to be doing what he does.
When Matt brings home the kid, the first thing you do is freeze for a second. Who is this kid? How did he get hurt? How does Matt know him? Why is he in your apartment bleeding?
You're quickly pushed out of your thoughts when Matt helps the kid onto the couch and looks to you for help. You immediately jump in, using your doctor skills to the best of your ability. Both he and your boyfriend stay silent the whole time. Matt stays sitting in an armchair to the side, obviously stressed by whatever happened.
It takes a while to patch up the kid, whose name you still don't know, but as soon as you're finished, he falls asleep on the couch and allows you time to discuss this strange situation with Matt.
Why is it that he stays silent the whole time you're busy helping the kid but the second you're ready to talk he runs off to the kitchen, not exactly running off as the kitchen is right there, but still?
“Matt. Explain?” You don't know what to say or ask. A million questions are running through your head as you follow him to the kitchen.
“His name's Peter.” He hesitates to continue. “He's spiderman, that's how he got hurt.”
“What? He's a child!” How the hell is a teenager Spiderman?
“Yeah, I know that's why I've been keeping an eye on him.” He says as if it's the most casual thing ever. As if he didn't just bring me a beaten-up sixteen-year-old to fix up.
“What do you mean keeping an eye on him? Do you listen to him?” You turn back to the living room and collapse in a chair.
“No, he lives too far away. I just mean that I call him and check up on him.” His voice is quiet, careful not to wake the sleeping kid. “I met him a few weeks ago.”
“When you were in Queens? Is that why you left?” A couple of weeks ago, Matt spent a few days in Queens for a new client he met. He never said much about it and you never asked. You never wanted to invade his clients' privacy and you weren't sure he could tell you about it anyway.
“Yeah actually.” He doesn't say anymore and for some reason, you don't ask. Not sure if you want to know the reasons this kid, Peter you now know, could be in danger. You know Matt can handle himself so most of the time you try not to worry yourself but this is a young kid, that you can almost guarantee doesn't have anywhere near the amount of fighting training Matt had.
After a few hours of making sure he was okay on the couch, and convincing Matt to stay in for the night, you both decide to head to bed.
Tumblr media
You wake up the next morning to loud crashing noises from the kitchen. You automatically know it's not Matt because one he is a terrible cook and two he is still lying in bed with an arm over your waist. So Peter must have woken up from his injury-induced slumber and started cooking because he's hungry?
You reluctantly throw yourself out of bed. Despite getting plenty of sleep you feel anything but well rested. As you head out of the bedroom you see Peter wearing the old clothes Matt put out for him and trying to cook something in the kitchen. From the smell of it, he's probably not the best cook either.
“Good morning.” You greet him, coming into the kitchen and leaning against the counter. He whips around to look at you in surprise, he clearly doesn't have the same super senses as Matt.
“Oh uh, good morning!” He tries his best to sound cheerful but his voice has an underlying tone of shock and awkwardness. “Sorry for waking you up. I know taking of someone you don't know so late at night isn't the best, so I thought I would make you and Matt some breakfast to try and make up for it. I'm Peter by the end.” You stay silent as he falls into an awkward ramble.
“Hi Peter I'm y/n. And you don't have to worry about making it up to us, we were happy to help. Plus I deal with this stuff all the time.”
“Right, you're a doctor! Matt told me about that.” He puts down all the stuff he was “cooking” and leans along the counter with you.
“Oh, he talks about me?”
“Well, it was that or all the people we've fought as masked superheroes.” He shrugs.
“Superhero? Aren't you a little young to be fighting like you do?”
“Maybe but if I can help people why wouldn't I?”
“You could always be selfish and use your powers for yourself.” You tell him out of both curiosity and the fact that if you had any kind of powers you can't guarantee you would use them to help anyone else.
“Yeah, I guess.” And just like you both stop talking. Waiting in silence for Matt to wake up before you order breakfast.
Tumblr media
Peter stayed with you guys for a little over a week while you made sure he was fully healed from his injuries. Before long he was going back home to Queens to whoever he lives with. You know from one brief conversation that his parents are gone, he never said how or who he stays with now but that's not any of your business.
He comes over almost every week now for dinner, one of the only nights a week you and Matt cook instead of ordering takeout. You have the feeling Matt has imprinted on Peter, kind of like a baby duck. Maybe it's because they’re so similar. They can relate to each other in a way Foggy and Karen can’t. Well, Frank can but he and Matt don’t exactly get along.
Today is one of the days that he’s gonna be coming over for dinner. You and Matt are in the kitchen making a new pasta dish.
“So I wanted to ask you a question?” Matt suddenly tells you, while in the middle of stirring the pasta sauce.
“You know you don't have to ask to ask a question right?” It doesn't matter how many times you say it, Matt will always warn you before asking a question. Most likely because he's worried about bothering you.
He lets out a deep chuckle. “I know, sweetheart, but I'm worried you'll say no.”
“I doubt it. What is it?”
“You know how Peter lives with his aunt right?” He pulls the finished sauce off the stove so he can put his full attention on you.
“I knew he lived some family member, yes. Why?” You’re very curious as to where this is going.
“Well, she’s getting older and I thought maybe he could come and stay with us for a while.” Not what you expected him to ask.
“Matt, I would say yes to that if I could see how it would work. We don't have the room.” You shrug. You would love to help Peter out but you don’t think he would like living on the couch for at least a year.
“That’s why I'm asking you. You always know what to do with these things.” If he means the way you freak out thinking of every possible solution and pretend to know what you’re doing then yeah, you are a master at it.
“I don't know, Matty. There is about a year and a half before he goes to college, there is no way he’ll be comfortable here for that long.”
“I know. Believe me, I’ve been thinking of a way this could work. I just don’t want him to be alone.”
“He won’t be. Even if he can’t live here he’s always welcome.” And just by saying that you come up with the perfect idea.
Tumblr media
A few weeks later it worked. Somehow everything magically fell into place. At the end of your previous conversation about it, you told Matt how great it would be if Peter could have his own apartment close to yours and magically one became available in the same building. Being sixteen, Peter obviously couldn't pay for the place himself but you were able to help out, having some extra money due to being a good doctor.
“Thank you, sweetheart.” Matt comes up to you. “You didn’t have to do that.”
“Eh, you’re rubbing off on me.” You grumble with a fake annoyance.

Matt Murdock let out a yawn listening to his screen reader, neck aching, lids half-hooded at this point. It was well beyond the night for this lawyer of Hell’s Kitchen. It was definitely nothing new, taking hours doing research for a case. The week has been busy for him, balancing pro-bono cases and bigger cases to pay for the bills, this didn’t even include his nightly duties to the Kitchen.
Matt was in his dining area with his laptop and tons of paperwork, one earbud on as the robotic voice of the reader blurred in his tired brain. He pauses the audio and rests his face on his hands. The sounds of his neighborhood started to flood his senses, the dogs barking, the couples fighting, the crying babies, it was all making his head hurt. He tries to breathe his way into silencing the noises, purely focusing on blocking them all out when he hears a moan and buzzing sound from the unit next door. He knew who you were, you’ve exchanged greetings before, you even gave him packed food on Christmas day. It was a warm gesture, something that rarely happens in this neighborhood he loves to protect.
With Matt tuning his senses to the sounds coming from your room he hears what you’re doing clearly. You were on your bed, he heard the way the bed creaks and the way the cotton sheets brush on your shirt, you were completely naked waist down, the vibrating toy in between your legs teases you sex. It was a gift from your friend, you told them it was embarrassing and that you would never use it anyway, but here you were holding the six-inch pink vibrator in your hands.
On the other side of the wall Matt could hear you spread lube on the vibrating device. He furrowed his brows and removed the earbud to fully listen to what’s happening. Matt knew it was wrong, he purposely intended to only use his hightented abilities for good, not for eavesdropping on your neighbor masturbating. He loosens his tie from the heat starting to burn inside him, unbuttoning the first two buttons from his shirt. He hears your soft moans from you teasing your sex with the vibrator, you try to increase the intensity and you suddenly shudder from the shock of pleasure. At the same time, Matt could feel his own erection form.
Your mind wandered to the hot neighbor you had, with his red glasses, unkempt stubble, and his soft lips. You wondered what it would feel to have those lips on your skin, the softness of his kisses with the roughness of his facial hair trailing down your body to your center. Your eyes closed as you dive deeper into your fantasy, moaning while your thighs move closer. You were reminded of that time you saw him take a package left on his doorstep with the name “Foggy” written on it. He was only clothed from the waist down with worn out sweatpants with the hems tucked into old cotton socks. You marveled at his toned body, his big arms, his broad chest and his abs. You couldn’t help but stare as he bent down and his muscles contracted into deeper lines making them more defined.
“Fuck,” you said as you started to put the vibrator in your sex, feeling your muscles tense and give into the sensations. The lube added more ease to the thrusts you were doing to your center. You gripped the sheets as you moaned. In your head the pleasure wasn’t from a toy but from the man in the unit next door.
Behind the thin wall Matt Murdock was also in the middle of pleasure. He had opened his trousers and was pumping his dick to the sounds from the other room. Your voice starts to pitch higher from the immense pleasure. You muffle your moans with your other hand as you continue to fuck yourself. In a twisted use of his abilities, Matt could single out the  moments the vibrator would go in and out of you. He used that chance to pump his dick in the same rhythm to yours.
Come on, sweetheart, let me hear your moans, he whispers under his breath, his chest rising and falling. He spits into his cock to give him some lubrication so his thrusts could be faster. You were a whimpering mess, your hand leaves your mouth to play with your nipples. You wanted to call for his name. The name of the man next door. Matt was it? Your orgasm was close. Your body slightly convulsing, tears pooling in your eyes. You wanted him so badly, want to feel his cock as it thrusts inside you. You want to feel him lose himself in your arms. A carnal desire looms over the both of you.
“I want you so bad, Matt,” you moaned. Matt was shocked to hear you moan his name, and how you wanted him. Wanton lust pulses through Matt’s body as he cums. His senses focusing on your beautiful noises, his cum pools on his abdomen as he climaxes.
The tension inside you loosens as you give out your release. You give out one last moan before you fall back to the mattress. You turn off the device and take it out of you. You lay there in your bed, ashamed of what you’ve done. The same way Matt feels. Sin won tonight in Hell’s Kitchen, wherein you and the devil lost yourselves to lust. Matt wondered if it would happen again tomorrow night.
He grins.
interactions are greatly appreciated btw if u liked this fic and want more send me a prompt and i'd gladly make something from it :>

You believed cold mornings were destined to be spent in bed, lounging in the softness of silk sheets next to your boyfriend's warm body. Especially when it was on the weekend. But Matt had another idea. He wanted to head to Fogwell and get a headstart on his day because he knew he would spend the whole day in the apartment once he surrendered.
'You're too distracting. I can't focus when I'm around you,' he said, making your heart race and cheeks flush.
Matt pushed himself off the mattress, revealing the bare expanse of his back. Your eyes greedily drank in the way his muscles rolled with every movement, the way his skin was ghosted with goosebumps as it was exposed to cold air. Before he could leave the bed, you winded a leg around his waist and pulled with all your might. Matt fell back, and you immediately wrapped your limbs around him, trapping him on top of you. A soft chuckle escaped his throat, and you could feel the vibration of it. He shifted as much as you allowed until he faced you with a broad smile, his eyes crinkling at the corners. He braced himself on his hands, carefully keeping some of his weight off you. You craned your neck, pressing a kiss to his jaw.
"Oh, come on. Stay with me, please?"
Matt smiled ruefully at your plea.
"There's nothing I'd love more, but I already missed yesterday."
As if he could see the pout slowly forming on your lips, he quickly added.
"I won't be gone for long. Then, we'll have the whole day together."
You sighed in resignation, knowing that you would have to physically let him go at one point. An idea sparked in your head. Maybe you could convince him otherwise.
How hard would it be to be a human weight? As it turned out – quite hard. It took you a few tries, but you finally figured it out. You kept your legs straight, your arms fastened to the sides and allowed Matt to hoist you up with his strength. The first rep was hard because you couldn't stop laughing and flailing at how ridiculous it was. With one hand on your back and the other on your ass, he balanced you with his hands splayed. You felt a slow drop and rise with every careful move, accompanied by his grunts of exertion. You breathed softly, trying not to shake so Matt wouldn't drop you. The small gusts of exhales through his mouth brushed lightly on the bare skin on your back as your shirt rose, tickling you. You held it in, trying to keep still.
But you couldn't hold it for long. Your body shook lightly, and even as you kept your lips sealed, you couldn't help a small shake run through your body. From below, Matt grunted, and you could hear all the amusement in his deep baritone.
"I could tell you're laughing, sweetheart."
"I'm trying not to, I swear!"
Despite the delighted chuckle that slipped out, Matt only slowed down. His fingers on your back twitched slightly, and you couldn't hold it anymore.
"Matt I can't keep–"
You could only warn him before slipping out of Matt's grasp. You fell on top of him with a shriek. He groaned; the sound seemed more humour than pain. You immediately got up, frantically searching for injuries.
"I'm so sorry!! Are you okay?"
Matt only laughed softly, pulling you on top of him without a word. His hands found themselves on your lower back and neck, pressing you even closer to him. He pressed a kiss on your forehead, then your cheek, before nudging your head to rest on his chest.
"I'm okay. I'm okay."
He patted your back as if to emphasize his reassurance. You felt the gentle strokes on your hair and relaxed in his hold. You kissed his rib to make up for the fall, your hand absent-mindedly caressing his torso.
"You're right. I should have let you go."
With a resigned sigh, you pushed yourself up but were stopped short as Matt tightened his hold. He closed his eyes, his head tilted back to rest on the floor.
"Stay. Now I'm too comfortable to leave."
Your eyes widened in excitement, and you quickly settled against him. For a while after that, you were intertwined in each other's embrace in Matt's living room with the soft surface of the wool carpet underneath you, indulging in all the time and comfort you needed.

Matt Murdock x gender neutral reader
Tags/warnings: fluff.
He enters through the living room window, careful to avoid knocking over the array of knick-knacks perched on the windowsill. He has a key of course but he just prefers this way. He knew from blocks away that you were deep in sleep, a smile hooking up his lip when he could hear your little snorts and snores.
His body is remarkably free of hurt and bereft of bruising for once, it had been a rare quiet night. He slides both his mask and shirt off, sitting on the edge of your couch to unlace his boots. He strips down to his black silk shorts, moving quietly on his bare feet as he pads into your kitchen to the fridge. He opens it, feeling along the containers on the shelves. Sure enough he finds there's a braille label that reads 'Matt' on one. He takes out the container, placing it on the counter and opening the lid a crack to investigate its contents. Tomato, garlic, basil, olives and oregano fill his nose before he puts it into the microwave for a few minutes to heat it up. You'd always leave some dinner for him if you thought he'd be out late and he loved you for it. Your pasta was the best.
He sits at the table eating straight out of the tub, more famished after patrol than he realised. He'll wash everything up in the morning but he walks around your apartment picking up and folding your hoodie over the back of the couch and tidying away some other detritus, putting his own clothes in a neat pile before heading to the bathroom to quickly wash and brush his teeth. You always left everything where he can easily find it, including a pack of Tylenol just in case.
When he slides into your bed he smiles softly as your arms immediately seek him out, wrapping around him as you snuggle your warmth into his cooler skin to equilibrate. You reply with a small hum when he kisses your forehead gratefully.
"Thanks for dinner sweetie." He whispers, and you mumble something half incoherent about lizards and he has to really stop himself from laughing at you.
Your fingers sleepily find his and he gently squeezes your hand, kissing the top of your head again.
"You're like a stray." He hears you murmuring into his arm.
"Hm?"
"... someone should adopt you." you continue, and he does let himself chuckle at that.
You feebly shove at his chest, waking up a bit. "M'not joking. Come 'n live with me."
Matt strokes his other hand down your arm, breathing in your sleepy scent. It's true that he could get used to this but you were just babbling.
"Shh, go back to sleep."
He can feel the brush of your eyelashes on his skin. "Matt, I wanna wake up every morning with you here like this."
His heart swells with the thought that you'd really want to take him in.
"What's there to talk 'bout? You don't wanna?"
"Let's talk about it in the morning sweetheart." is what he says.
He hears the small measure of hurt in your grizzly voice as you blink open your eyes in the dark. He puts his hand to the side of your face, thumb smoothing over your cheek. Then he captures your lips, slow and soft.
"Yeah I want to." He assures, and you smile and kiss him back.
"Good. S'settled then." And you nuzzle back close against him. "I love you Matty. I'll keep the sill clear."
Okay, his heart was definitely going to burst.
"Love you too, sweetheart. Thank you."

"I told you to drop it."
"Drop it?" you exclaimed, following him into his apartment and down the long hallway, the lights of the bilboard lighting your ways, hues of blues and pinks playing across the suit jacket of the man in front of you. "You want me to drop it?"
"Yes, leave it alone. Nothing's wrong."
You threw your hands up in the air, exasperated beyond belief at this point, seconds away from pulling out your hair strand by strand. "That is biggest pile of dog shit I have ever heard come out of your mouth, Matthew."
He spun on his heels so fast that you nearly ran into him, only just managing to shift your weight to your back foot in order to stop your momentum from taking you forward. The frustration on his face and narrowed eyes caused your eyes to widen, taken aback by his anger.
"I'm fine. Stop asking me what's wrong." His voice was low, a damn near growl, his mouth twisted in an ugly frown that was so unlike him it was startling. Your mouth dropped, voice caught in your throat temporarily, as you stared at him. Satisfied at your silence, Matt spun back around, stomping into his bedroom.
You and Matt weren't unused to spats between you from time to time, but this was the first time he had ever had a look on his face that looked like that.
You steeled your spine, letting your anger rise up past your shock, as you followed after him, only just managing to avoid knocking your knee on his coffee table in your haste. Standing at the entrance to his bedroom, arms crossed over your chest, chin tilted up in defiance.
"No," you growled out, "you don't get to talk to me like that and then walk away." Matt ignored you, and you watched as he yanked his tie off before swiftly unbuckling his slacks.
His actions alone told you that he was getting ready to go out for the night, despite the fact that the city wasn't completely dark yet, people still out and about on that chilly October evening. You knew him well enough by now that when his blood was up, like it was now, he needed the city to provide him with criminals he could bloody his fists on.
Sometimes you weren't sure who need Daredevil more; the city, or Matthew Murdock.
"Matt." He continued to tear his clothes off until all that was left was his boxers and scarred skin. "Matthew."
He finally tilted his head in your direction, chest heaving rapdily. "What?"
You raised your eyebrows as you stared at him. "Seriously? You're just gonna go out and not even try to finish this conversation?"
Matt scoffed, blank eyes all but rolling. "We're not having a conversation. You asked me what was wrong, and I said I'm fine. Anything you've said after that is on you." He didn't wait for a reply before he walked around you and exited his the bedroom, heading towards the closet under the stairs where he stored his suit. You turned to watch him, but otherwise remained frozen to the spot, completely taken aback.
"When did you get so mean?"
Matt finally faltered.
He kept his back to you, but you watched him run a hand briefly through his hair, pale hand shaking slightly in the dim lighting of his living room. His shoulders rose as he took a deep breath, reaching out to open the closet with a loud sigh. Once it was open, he knelt down and hastily swept his suit up.
He still didn't say anything, and a lump caught in your throat, anger replaced with the spark and sudden growing fire of panic.
"You've become so distant, Matt," you started, hating how your voice shook as your hands fell to your sides and clenched into tight fists. "You don't call as much, you haven't touched me in weeks, and I can't even remember the last time we slept in the same bed. What is going on?"
"Everything's fine."
Your heart was racing now. "Don't...Don't give me that. Everything is clearly not fine."
Matt was nearly done putting on the suit, currently finishing up the last fastenings as you stared at him, begging him to tell you what was wrong. But Matt was a man who bottled things up so tightly that raging thoughts and feelings were sometimes too compressed to ever escape. He'd gotten better recently, the layers of the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen slowly peeling back for you, but things didn't always work the way you wanted them to.
Tonight was a prime example.
"I don't know what you expect me to say, then," he muttered, the words loud enough to be heard in his quiet apartment.
You refused to let things go. "Maybe just some explanation for why things have changed? Did I do something?"
Matt gave a loud sigh, one you immediately flinched at, huddling in on yourself before the breath even completely left his body. It was a sigh of annoyance, a sigh of disinterest, a sigh of unadulterated irritation.
"I really need to leave," he said as he very easily ignored the question, sitting on the steps to his rooftop access to tie his black shoes. "I'll call you later."
"No."
"No?"
"No," you repeated, fingernails digging into your palm as you struggled to take a breath. "If you decide to walk out that door in the middle of this, don't bother calling me."
He paused, helmet in his hand, his face a twist of incredulity and aggravation as if he couldn't understand what you were saying. You held your ground, your feet planted from right outside his bedroom, doing your best to eye him down as you bit your lip in anxiety.
"Are you giving me an ultimatum?" he asked, voice betraying his disbelief.
"No," you denied immediately, then frowned. "Well...maybe? I don't know, Matt. I don't know what to do here."
"To be clear, you're asking me to choose between you and Hell's Kitchen," he said slowly, taking a small step towards you. "You're asking me to choose, when you've spent so much time promising you'd never do that."
"I'm not asking you to choose!" you exclaimed loudly, your panic manifesting in frantic words. He looked agitated again, and it took all you had to push the tears back from where this conversation had led to. "I'm asking you to stay here and talk to me before going out."
He shook his head, scoffing, while finally slipping his helmet on and turning his back to you, ready to head up the stairs. "I don't have time for this."
"God, I feel like I don't even know you anymore." A stray, pathetic tear finally rolled down your face, and you swore you saw him stiffen, shoulders stilling and hand clenching on the banister. You knew he could taste the salt on the air, knew that he was aware tears were sliding out.
A few weeks ago you would have expected him to immediately apologize for causing you to cry, any argument dead on his lips as he held you to him, apologies and words of comfort whispered into your ears. With the feeling of utter heartbreak, your head lowered when you realized you didn't know what to expect from him anymore.
With a profound sense of sadness, and before he could respond or walk away in his apparent urgency to go out to prowl the city, you left instead, crossing through his living room and walking down the long hallway. You didn't hesitate when you pulled his front door behind you, too drained to stay behind for a second longer.
He didn't follow.
--------
It had been eleven days.
Eleven days and nothing.
No phone calls. No daytime drop bys at your office with a cup of coffee or an offer for lunch. No midnight hellos through windows, black clothing lit up by the moon that hung in the sky.
But you'd given him what he had perceived as an ultimatum, hadn't you? And you hadn't been the winner.
You'd always known Hell's Kitchen came first. It was something you both loved and hated about him. Long nights spent wondering if he was safe, hours spent stitching him up and putting him back together, countless tears shed when thinking about all the pain he put himself through for a city that would never truly appreciate the blood and sweat he gave for it. And all of it was worth it, if it meant his face was the first thing you saw in the morning, the first voice that said your name.
But this fight hadn't even been about Hell's Kitchen, had it? It had been about something else. It had been about him, and whatever was bothering him that he was unwilling to share with you. It had been about him not letting you in, not fully. After a year together, you thought he would have seen through the anger and panic to the real cause of your distress, rather than deflecting and getting meaner and meaner with each word carelessly thrown from his mouth.
Your fearless, reckless vigilante, whom you loved so much, had shut you out so suddenly and thoroughly without a single word as to why.
It killed you to think about it, but some part of you quickly became convinced that it had been done to distance himself from you in preparation of a break up. It was easy to see things that way when you considered his lack of affection, attention, and the way he'd let you slip out of his apartment without a word, tears slipping down cheeks heated with the exertion of begging him to fight for you.
That's what the voice in your head was telling you, at least. And with every day that went by, the voice got a little louder until it was screaming how much of an idiot you were for holding onto him. Perhaps this was the break up, now that you thought about it. Perhaps you walking out and him not following was the only ending necessary, though it seemed so anticlimactic.
His silence was so very telling. Maybe he thought no words were needed at this point.
And so you spent your waking hours doing anything and everything you could to keep your mind off of him, desperate to spend time outside of the heartbreak coursing through your veins like wild fire. You spent your days with your nose buried in your work. Deadlines you had pushed off were suddenly met way ahead of schedule. You spent your evenings catching up on your recorded TV shows, red wine in one hand, take out in the other, tissues on your coffee table in case of any unwanted appearances of tears. Your apartment was rearranged and scrubbed clean from head to toe.
Twice.
On day nine, you had placed his things in a duffle bag on the floor next to the door, ready to hand it off when, or if, he ever came by for it.
You had ignored the tears that swam in your vision as you did it.
The evening of day eleven found you in bed early, too exhausted and emotionally drained to even try to make it through your favorite ABC drama, curled up in a ball in an effort to keep as much of the world away from your, decreasing the amount of vulnerable skin that was available for bruises. Your arms were wrapped around the pillow you held to your chest, ignoring the thought that the pillow had at one point smelled like him.
You were very nearly asleep when a quiet tap sounded at your kitchen window, startling you for a quick second. You didn't have to think about what it could possibly be, the sound one that you've heard hundreds of times, though it had been absent lately.
Your heart rate spiked, as it always did when he was near, but this time it was in anxiety. It was almost embarrassing that your body reacted to him so obviously. He knew you in the most intimate way possible, each flush of your cheeks or flash of arousal lighting up a world only he would ever be able to navigate.
But tonight, you weren't really interested in him having any sort of access to you and what you were feeling.
"Go away, Matt."
Your voice was quiet, even to your own ears, but you knew he would be able to hear it all the same.
The tap sounded again, this time followed by the creak of a window that was trying to be opened from the outside. He was used to letting himself inside your apartment at night, even if only to crawl into bed next to you to drift off to sleep by your side, arms wrapped around you so tightly that you didn’t know where he ended and you began.
You could practically feel his confusion as he realized that for the first time since you had met him, the window was locked.
The tapping came again, this time louder and more insistent, and before you even knew what you were doing, you were heaving yourself out of bed and making your way into the kitchen.
You threw the window open halfway, noting vaguely that he was perched on your fire escape in black clothing, not unlike what he used to wear before the red suit, his head covered by the hood of his sweatshirt but face open and pale in the dark.
"Are you bleeding?"
Matt frowned, clearly thrown off by the question. "No."
"Are you hurt?"
"No. Why--"
"Then kindly get off of my fire escape." Your hands rose to bring the window back down, and in shock, Matt almost missed sliding his hands under to keep it open.
"Wait!" You stopped pushing the window down, not because you wanted to hear what he had to say, but because you knew your strength was no match for his. "Wait, please. Let me come in."
"No, thanks."
"We should talk, sweetheart."
Though you had spent the last few days preparing yourself for something like this, it didn't stop the cold feeling of dread that poured itself down your spine.
"There's no need, Matt," you said, making every effort to keep your voice as even as possible. "I already know what you came here to say."
"I don't think you do. Please, let me in."
"Look," you started tiredly, tugging on the braid that was resting over your shoulder. "We don't need to do this. Things aren't working out, I get it."
"That's not--"
"You've made it pretty clear that this isn't what you want anymore, and that's fine," you continued, looking away from dark eyes that were all but pleading with you, trying to avoid falling into the man who had seemingly let you walk out of his life. "It would have been nice for you to break it to me gently rather than pushing me away as violently as you did, but it doesn't matter at this point."
"Sweetheart--"
"Don't call me that."
"I didn't come here to--"
"You didn't need to come here at all. I got the point, really."
"Will you just let me talk?" he demanded loudly, yanking the window all the way up, apparently done with being outside while you were inside.
You took an automatic step backwards, leaving more than enough room between the two of you as he let himself in. As always, his presence was larger than life, and in your tiny kitchen, you found it overwhelming in a way it hadn't been before. You found yourself stepping behind the kitchen table, effectively placing it between the two of you.
You didn't miss the way Matt's body lurched in apparent grief at the motion.
An awkward silence settled between the two of you, and it seemed that Matt was struggling with what to say, despite the way he had demanded to let him speak.
"What do you want, Matt?" you asked quietly, eyes finally making their way back to his face. "I haven't been sleeping well and I'm exhausted. I'd like to go to bed."
"I needed to talk to you," he repeated, his blank, beautiful eyes aimed at your chin.
"I already said it wasn't necessary," you shrugged. The impassive tone you took was empty, but that didnt mean it was convincing. "Things got ugly, but it's over now."
"Things aren't over now," he said adamantly, moving around the table, hands lifting to reach for you. "Please, just hear me out."
"I don't...I don't really know if I want to," you said honestly, quietly. Matt flinched, and you knew it was because your heart hadn't skipped on a lie. "This went on for weeks. I gave you so many opportunities to talk to me. I begged you to talk to me. All you did was...ignore how it was hurting me. I don't want to hear whatever lame excuse you're going to come up with."
"I swear it's not an excuse," he pleaded. "I just...I just needed some time. And space."
"Sure," you shrugged again, struggling to maintain the level of calm and rational. "I can understand needing that. I don't know what was bothering you, but you didn't even give me a chance to understand. And now you're...what? Here to officially break up with me? I kind of already figured it was over, seeing as how it's been eleven--"
"Break up?" Matt looked alarmed as his eyes widened. "Is that what you think I'm here to do?"
"Nothing ever good comes from a conversation that starts with "We should talk," Matt."
He took another step around the table, and it took everything in you not to flinch away. Matt had never touched you with anything but gentle hands, and while you weren't on great terms at the moment, you didn't want him to think you were afraid of him.
"Sweetheart, that's not--"
"I love you, Matt," you told him bluntly, cutting him off with a hand raised in front of you, telling him to stop his movement in your direction. "But if the past few weeks were anything to go by, you're not willing, or maybe not able, to let me in. And I don't want to be with someone who hides so many pieces of themselves away from me. It's lonely, and I'm done with it."
He looked absolutely crestfallen, and suddenly resigned. You took a deep breath and soildered on, even as you felt your heart breaking in your chest.
"I'm sorry, Matt."
"No," he croacked out, shaking his head abruptly, eyes sightlessly dancing around the room as he licked his lips. "I'm sorry. I never meant to...have things end this way."
"It's ok." It wasn't. "There's a bag of your things over by the door." You tilted your head toward the duffle bag.
"My...things?"
"Yeah," you responded quietly, gesturing to the door with a hand that seemed limp and lifeless. "Tshirts, hoodies, your extra pair of glasses."
Matt paused for a second in surprise before he walked over to the door, a clumsy gait to his steps that you had never seen on him in the year you'd known him. With obviously shaking hands, he bent down to pick up the bag. His breathing had changed, you'd noticed. It was the breathing of someone about to have a panic attack. You grimaced, hating watching him like this.
Before, you would have comforted him. Held him and played with his hair and whispered how much you loved him in his ear.
But now, you were tired, and knowing what the past few weeks had been like, you honestly weren't sure if he'd even like having your hands on him.
He may have pushed you away first, but here you were shoving him away, too, if only to avoid any further pain on your end. Even if he didn't feel the same way about you as you did him, it was still a painful conversation for both parties.
"I'll swing by on Saturday to grab my stuff," you whispered. Matt let out a shaky sigh, accompanied by a hesitant nod of his head. "I'm going back to bed. Please shut the window behind you."
You left him standing in your kitchen, dark head bent sadly, scarred hands gripping the bag in his hands so tightly that his knuckles had turned white.
-----
Saturday rolled around too quickly for your liking. You had gathered one of your large duffle bags and a backpack to take over to Matt's apartment, unsure of just how many things you had over there.
You both had been toying with the idea of you moving in, so naturally quite a bit of your things had accumulated at his place. Work clothes. Sweat pants. Shoes. Your favorite bathrobe. Little bits and pieces of you slowly blending in with his, a subconscious way of laying down the building blocks for a life together.
With a sigh, and a mournful look at the run down front door you'd come to love, you let yourself into his apartment, taking in the scent of the man who had become your rock in a life that had always felt a little unsteady. You knew that most Saturday afternoons were spent catching up on cases with Foggy at their favorite diner, so you didn't expect him to be home.
You walked down the familiar hallway to the living, but abruptly froze when you took in the sight before you, eyes widening in shock.
His place was a mess.
One of his kitchen chairs lay broken next to the wall, clearly having been thrown against it. There was a giant fist-sized hole in the wall next to his bedroom that was shaped exactly like his hand, so you didn't need to guess whose it was. The trash hadn't been taken out in days, it looked like, and beer bottles were scattered along the counter.
You sighed and pinched the bridge of your nose.
It took you an hour, but you picked up and took out the trash and recycling, and scrubbed down the kitchen. Dishes were washed and put away. Counters wiped down, floor swept. He was a grown adult, more than capable of picking up after himself, but seeing his place in such disarray made you...sad.
You made your way back to where you'd dropped the duffle bag and headed into the bedroom, a place you'd spent so many nignts with him wrapped around you, beneath you, on top of you.
Hands on your hips, you ignored the way your eyes pricked with tears, and thought about where to start first.
You didn't hear the front door open and close, nor did you notice Matt's presence behind you until he called your name softly. Startled, you took a deep breath before you turned around slowly and braced yourself for the second part of a conversation you didn't want to have.
You were scared he would ask you to stay. You were even more scared that he would outright ask you to go.
"Hey."
"Hey," he echoed.
"I'll just...give me a few minutes and I'll be out of your hair. I'm almost done grabbing my stuff." Matt inhaled sharply, head tilting away from you as you spoke. With a frown of your own, you turned your back to him, walking over to the table on what had been your side of the bed.
You placed the duffle bag on the bed and continued placing items into it, not bothering to be organized or have the items be thoughtfully placed. Your extra phone charger. The book you always told yourself you'd finish reading. Your favorite necklace you always forgot you had on until you were snuggled under the covers, forced to sleepily place it on the table to avoid leaving the warmth of him next to you.
You knew you had his total focus, so you did your best not to tear up while you packed your things. This was hard enough as it was, and as much as he had hurt you, you didn't want to make things more difficult for him than it had to be.
Eyeing the shoes you had left next to his closet, you walked forward to scoop them up. They were your favorite pair of heels, and you had worn them the last time you'd gone out for a nice dinner, his hand laced tightly in yours as he helped you keep your balance on the uneven New York City sidewalks, quiet laughter and declarations of love pressed against your cheek. While you both were always, always busy, you still found a way to make time for each other as often as you could.
The thought caused you to sniffle unintentionally as your lip quivered ever so slightly. You rubbed the heels of your palms to your eyes and took a deep breath that shuddered your body on both inhale and exhale. Matt let out a soft whine behind you, and you knew without turning around that he was wanting to pull you into him. He always made that sound when he could tell you were sad and on the verge of breaking down.
Or, at least he used to want to pull you into him before the last month or so, back when he would still touch you and pour his affection and love into your skin. Now, you weren't so sure what he wanted.
"I'm fine, Matt," you told him, voice shaking. You swept up the rest of your shoes into your arms and walked them back to the duffle bag on the bed. "I'll be done here in a few."
"No."
Your head snapped up to look at him incredulously. "No?"
He shook his head adamantly, blank eyes aimed somewhere around your abdomen. "No, don't go. You can't go."
You stared at him in disbelief. "Where was this attitude when you let me just walk out without a word two weeks ago?"
Matt opened his mouth but didn't say anything, merely licking his lips and tilting his head to the side for a moment.
You sighed in disappointment, shaking your head bitterly. "That's what I thought." Using shaking hands, you zipped up the full bag and moved to leave the room.
Matt quickly blocked you, placing himself in between you and the door way, his body just a few feet from yours as his eyes settled on your chin. "Please, just hear me out."
"Matt--"
"Just give me a few minutes, okay? I need to tell you what happened."
His face was flushed with what looked to be mild panic, and you couldn't tell if it was panic at the thought of you leaving, or panic at having to let out whatever had been bothering him so much that he'd thought the best solution was to violently push you away. Maybe it was both.
You took a few steps back from him, nodding silently, as you tried to put some space in between the two of you. Placing the bag back on the bed, you crossed your arms over your chest, willing to hear him out, but not wanting to stand so close to him. This was bound to be painful, anyway you cut it, and having him within arm's reach would most likely make it worse.
"Go ahead, then. If it's just another lie, I'm walking out and never looking back."
Matt nodded jerkily, licking his lips again like he always did when he was nervous. The corner of his bottom lip was split open, and you cringed when you noticed it. Even in your pain, even in your anger, you hated seeing him hurt.
You watched as he opened his mouth and shut it a few times, as if he was still unsure if he actually wanted to speak. Your frustration grew with each second he didn't say anything, your nerves fraying more and more the longer you stood in front of him.
"If you're not gonna actually--"
"Just...hold on," he said, desperation seeping into his voice. "I'm trying to think of the best way to say what I need to say."
"Why? What could be so bad that you--"
"A woman died in my arms a few weeks ago." The words tore their way out of his mouth so suddenly that you weren't sure who was more surprised by them; him, or you. You faltered, all of your irritation and anger and bitterness in your body stumbling to a screeching stop. You looked at him, your jaw dropping in shock, unsure if you had heard him correctly.
"What?"
You'd been face to face with him for the past two minutes, but you felt like you were seeing him for the first time since you'd realized he was in the apartment with you. Your eyes took in his appearance, wincing at his bruised knuckles, a black eye that seemed to be fading, a long jagged scratch on the side of his throat. Matt looked so sad, so lost, as his sightless eyes seemingly focused on the floor next to his feet.
You had been prepared for a bullshit excuse, while still simultaneously hoping for something that would save your relationship with the only man you had ever loved. But you hadn't been expecting...this.
A shiver when down your spine as you stared at him in growing dread.
"A woman died in my arms a few weeks ago," he repeated shakily. He ran a hand through his hair anxiously, tugging at the dark strands that were ready to be cut. "I was...I was a few blocks away when I heard a man yank her into an alley, a gun in his hand."
You stared at him, horrified. You knew the sorts of things that went on while he was out. Human trafficking. Drug busts. Muggings. Assaults.
Matt didn't like talking about it most of the time, and you didn't like pressing him on it if it made him uncomfortable. But to hear something like this come ripping itself out if his mouth was extremely jarring and you found yourself terrified of what he was going to say next.
He took another deep breath.
"I heard her scream, heard how he slapped his hand over her mouth to quiet her, heard him cock the gun and dig it into her stomach." Matt was fidgeting with the zipper on his hoodie as he spoke, and a part of you longed to take your hand in his, wondering if it might calm his restlessness. You held yourself back, though, not yet trusting your feet to move you forward without stumbling to the ground.
"He demanded that she give him her purse, which she did, of course. But then he ordered her to unbutton her shirt, and she refused."
Your heart hammered in your chest, face growing paler by the second.
"She tried to push him off of her, and he got mad and...pulled the trigger. I was still a few blocks away." Matt walked forward as if he were in a trance, unfocused eyes glazed over, hands feeling around for his bed. It alarmed you that he was so distraught that he was relying on his hands alone to navigate his bedroom, the rest of his senses so wrapped up in a horrifying memory. He took a seat, sinking onto the mattress with a heavy, pained sigh.
"When I got there, I could tell she wasn't going to make it." He briefly shut his eyes in a grimace, an intense full-body shudder wracking through him. "The guy was gone, but I didn't bother going after him because I knew I needed to stay with her. Make sure she wasn't alone." The breath he took was so shaky, and you found yourself finally able to move as your forced yourself forward, kneeling at his feet once you were in front of him. Your hand was grasping his a second later, suddenly unwilling to let him relive this alone as he tore himself apart to finally let you in.
"I held her as she bled out," Matt choked out, as if it was suddenly difficult to breathe. You gripped his thigh, and did your best to rub soothing circles into the muscle that lay under his jeans. "I tried to stop the bleeding, hoping I was wrong, that she could still make it, but the blood was coming out too fast and there was nothing I could do. She was sobbing, begging me to save her, and I couldn't."
You didn't know when you had started crying, but you had to take your hand off his leg briefly to wipe your eyes to clear your vision. His hand shook in yours.
"And she..." Matt paused again, taking another deep, gasping breath. "She reminded me of you."
"What?" you asked, immediately confused, mind scrambling to comprehend what he had just said, suddenly frantic to make sense of what he had just told you. "What do you mean?"
"She reminded me of you," he repeated quietly. "Roughly the same height. Similar accent, the one that only comes out when you're upset. A blouse made of the same material you wear so often. And she...she used the same shampoo."
Matt's hand lifted to wipe at the tears on his face as he struggled to speak. "This woman I didn't know was dying in my arms. And...and even as I tried to comfort her, all I could think about was you. All I could think about was...what if you were in trouble, and I couldn't get to you in time?"
Your mind twisted and turned as realization finally hit you.
This.
This was what had been driving him away from you, this belief that he would never be the kind of man you needed. This was the root of it.
"Matt, love. I'm fine. I'm here."
"I know you are," he let out, hand still trembling in yours, and steadily getting worse. His unfocused gaze landed on your forehead, and you could see the dark circles under his eyes up close. "But even before this happened, this is something I would think about often, something I still think about often. The thought of...of not being good enough or quick enough or strong enough to stop something bad from happening to you."
Taking a deep, unsteady breath of your own, you reached your hand up to cradle his cheek, and he immediately turned his head slightly to kiss your palm, needing the affection only you could provide.
"I trust you with my life, Matt."
He nodded with his eyes closed, swallowing before he spoke. "I know you do. But this...this was so real. It was just literally staring me in the face, this idea of losing you. And while I'm panicking and thinking about you, this woman is dying in my arms. And I can't even give her my full attention to comfort her, because I'm imaging someone else dying in front of me, and I couldn’t handle it."
You made a soft, mournful noise, and unable to stop yourself, you stood up and pushed his shoulders back from where he had hunched in on himself, before settling yourself in his lap. You wrapped your arms around his shoulders, with one hand reaching up to slide into his hair. With a shudder, his arms came up around you, holding you to him in a grip that you knew would leave bruises.
You'd let him leave marks all over your skin if it meant he would take even one ounce of comfort from you.
The pair of you sat in silence for a while, cheeks pressed together, trying to match your breathing to his, and vice versa. You rubbed your hand soothingly up and down his back, avoiding any areas that seemed tender. You felt a raised ridge of skin near his left hip and knew it meant he'd needed stitches recently.
You grimaced, wishing you'd been there for him, even if he hadn't wanted you to be.
"Why were you pushing me away, Matt? All I want is to be here for you," you told him gently when his breathing seemed to have settled a bit. You pulled back a bit to hold his face in your hands, where you used your thumbs to wipe away a few stray tears.
His grip tightened and he leaned into you, seemingly trying to keep as much contact with you as he could. And even while he tried to get as close to you as physically possible, you half expected him to pull away from you again. Instead, he surprised you by pushing on, at last tearing down that final barrier.
"It was hard being around you," he admitted softly. His hand reached up to massage the back of your neck, a habit he had started when he was trying to assure himself you were next to him. "I was having such awful nightmares and I didn't want you around while I slept. You sliced your finger open three weeks ago, and all I could think about was you bleeding out all over me. If I hugged you, the smell of your shampoo would bring me right back to that alley, so I started avoiding touching you. And the more you got upset, the more angry I got. But not angry at you, angry at myself for making you feel that way."
You listened quietly, ignoring how your eyes were watering, and how hard your heart was pounding in your chest.
"I was hurting. And because I was hurting, I struggled being around you, to the point where it started hurting you, too. It just became this vicious cycle that I didn't know to stop, and all of a sudden it was too late and you were walking away."
You didn't say anything as you took in what he was telling you. You continued to hold him, lips occasionally brushing over his cheek as your hands continued to run gently up and down his back.
"I'm sorry this happened," you whispered, your voice catching. "I'm sorry you went through that, I'm sorry that I got upset."
"No, sweetheart," he brought a finger up to your lips in an effort to shush you. "Don't...don't apologize. This isn't on you."
"But--"
"No," he repeated firmly. "I should have said something. I was wrong for pushing you away like that. I...I wasn't...I didn't know what to do. Didn't know how to handle it, and I took it out on you. On our relationship."
Your lip quivered. "You can't do that, Matt."
"I know."
"No, you don't know," you told him. "I'm not even talking about how it made me feel. I'm talking about you. I want you to be safe, and loved, and cared for. You deserve those things. You deserve to have someone there to hold your hand and be there for you. But I can't...I can't be there for you and help you if you don't tell me what's going on."
Matt was nodding while you spoke, eyes shut tight as he listened. You knew there was a voice in the back of his head telling you he didn't deserve those things, would never deserve them, and it broke your heart.
You tilted his head towards you and leaned in to press your lips gently to his. He let out a sigh as he brought a hand up to grasp your cheek.
"I'll always fight for you, Matt." He let out a shaky breath at your vow. "I'll always fight for you. Even if I'm fighting you against you. But I...I need you to fight for me, too. Okay? You can't let me walk out that door again. I need to know you're not going to just push me away like that again. You can yell and cry and ask me for anything, everything you need. But don't let me go."
"I won't, I won't do that again," he promised as he continued to stroke your check with his thumb. "I should never have let that happen. And I should have never waited so long to come after you. I love you."
You kissed him again, a little firmer this time, but no less tender. "I love you, too."
Silence took over again as you continued to sit there. You focused on the way his hand was now running up and down your arm gently, while the other brushed at your hip from where it was wrapped around you. Cradling his face in your hands, you placed a series of kisses on his face; his eyelids, his forehead, his cheeks. With each kiss, you felt a sliver of tension bleed away from him, until at last he seemed to sag in relief.
You eyed the duffle bag that was still on his bed, grateful that he had come home when he did so that you could have this talk. You weren't sure how you would have handled living in a world without him by your side. It had only been a year, but you knew this was something you wanted for the rest of your life. Knew that he was someone you wanted for the rest of your life.
You were willing, oh so willingly, to do whatever this man needed, whatever he asked of you.
Glancing at the bathroom door, an idea came to you. An idea that might be a good place to start, no matter how small and insignificant it would seem. Without much thought, you decided to act on it, desperate to help him in whatever way you could.
"Let me go, Matt." You gently pushed against the arms that held you to him.
"What? Why?" You didn't miss the way the panic seeped into his voice.
"Just...let go. Let me get up." Confused, he slowly and reluctantly released you. You leaned down to kiss his forehead, before standing up and walking towards the bathroom. You heard him get up behind you.
"Where are you going?" You knew him well enough to hear the anxiety creeping in, this time more insistent. You turned around, kicking off your shoes as you did so. Your shirt was pulled off and thrown to the floor at his feet, and your pants soon followed.
"I figured we'd start with a shower."
"A...shower?"
"Yes. You're going to help me wash my hair until you can't smell my shampoo any longer, and then you're going to keep talking to me and let me cuddle you the rest of the afternoon. You coming?"
For the first time in weeks, the tiniest hint of a smile appeared on his face, though it was brief and utterly bewildered, as his own shirt hit the floor. Matt stil look bemused, but he went along with your idea. He took a few hesitant steps forward until he was right in front of you.
Rough hands gripped your cheek, pushed your hair back behind your ears, and tilted your head forward so that he could place a gentle kiss to your forehead. With a soft sigh, he reached down to grasp your hand, and you let him pull you into the bathroom.

You are Evil
Pairing : Matt Murdock x GN!Reader
Summary : You make a deal with Matt and he is not happy. He is.
Warning : Human disaster Matt Murdock, Fluff
Tumblr media
Masterlist / Charlie Cox Masterlist
Matt could feel you glaring down at him, his chin being lightly pinched between your fingers, as you lifted his face. He could hear the nerve on your eyes straining as your pupils tried to make eye-contact with his dormant ones.
"Are you listening to me, Murdock" your stern voice echoed through his empty room.
Matt wanted to snicker but held it in, knowing it would just make you more angry.
He cleared his throat.
"Yes"
"You will not get up from here?" you warned him emphasizing each syllable.
You were done with his shit. That stupid idiot just got himself hurt and didn't let himself fully heal before going out to play devil again with the criminals.
So, when it became too much and he hurt himself really badly, you decided to take things in your own hands. But a certain someone wasn't taking it seriously, which could be seen by the way he tried to unsucessfully hide his smile.
"I won't"
"And if you do"
"Then what darling" his head tilted as a cocky smirk came on his infuriatingly cute face which not to metion was also bruised.
"Then Murdock" you whispered, your fingers trailed up his cheek as you leaned in so close, your lips almost touched his, "No hugs or kisses for a month."
It took Matt a few seconds to process that information, something that often happen when you were this close in proximity.
"No" Matt whispered as you got up. "A month, that's simply cruel" Matt pouted looking like a puppy whose tail you had just stepped on.
"It's your decision now" you shrugged, "You either fully let yourself heal before going out or you know"
Matt slumped his head bck groaning, "But people.."
"There are tons of other superheroes in NewYorks, who are going to take care of your patrol for a few days. Not to mention you can't even properly stand up"
"Yes, I can" Matt winced as he tried to stand up which he almost succeded at before slumping over as you caught him and gently laid him back on the bed.
You crossed your arms as he pouted once again. With a sigh, you turned around to leave before a wrist grabbed your hand.
"Fine but I demand cuddles all of the times"
Matt's head turned towards you as he lifted his other arm in a "come hither" motion.
"Alright" You agreed with a smug smile as you carefully climbed on the bed and wrapped yourself around him trying to avoid the bruises and injuries.
Matt sighed burying his face inside your neck, "You are truly evil" he murmured causing you to giggle.
"But you love me" you replied as you kissed his forehead running your hands through his hair.
"But I love you"

Thunder and Lullabies
Summary: With Matt's enhanced hearing thunderstorms can be a nightmare, and as much as he may pretend that he's gotten used to them, you can tell otherwise.
Matt Murdock x Reader
(Gender neutral/no use of gendered pronouns for reader)
Fluff, Domestic life, Comfort
Warnings: None
You sat reclined in your favorite pajamas against the arm of your boyfriend's couch, a good book in hand, a soft blanket draped over your lap, and a warm cup of your favorite tea within reach on the coffee table, while Matt, your boyfriend of about six months, cleaned the dishes that were left from the dinner you'd made for the two of you earlier that evening.
Listening to the ambient sounds of rain and thunder outside, and sneaking glances at Matt while turning the pages of your book, you smiled to yourself. Everything was so warm, and comfortable, and cozy. It was a perfect moment... For you, at least. But for Matt, it was very different.
You didn't notice how different at first. You'd caught early on in your relationship that he could be a bit twitchy when he was listening in to something, especially when there were a lot of sounds around him at once. So at first that's all you thought it was. But as you kept glancing at him you started to notice more. The way his brows knit together, and the way the corners of his mouth were drawn down in a slight frown. The way his shoulders were tensed. The fact that, despite the almost worryingly tight grip he had on the dishes he was rinsing at the moment, he kept nearly dropping them.
Then, when you saw that subtle way he jolted after a relatively close sounding clap of thunder, it hit you; he wasn't listening in to the rain, he was wincing.
"Matt," you called to him softly, "are you alright?"
"Hm? Uh, yeah of course, I'm fine." He answered, and if it weren't for the observations you'd made over the last few minutes you might've missed the slight strain in his voice.
"Are you sure?" You pressed lightly.
"Yeah, I'm fine, everything's fi-"
Another roll of thunder, another flinch.
"F-fine..." Matt continued to reassure you, although markedly less confidently. You sighed quietly as you set your book down on the coffee table, and called out to him again, "Hey, c'mere for a second."
Matt dried his hands and made his way toward you. "What's up? Need more tea?" He asked, but as he reached for your cup you gently caught his hand.
"No, just come closer," you said sweetly, tugging lightly on his sleeves. Visibly confused, but compliant, Matt allowed you to keep pulling him down toward you until he was lying on top of you, head positioned directly over your heart. You felt him unwind some, and after a quiet moment you spoke up again.
"...Why didn't you tell me the thunder was hurting you? I would've done this sooner."
"...I didn't want to bother you, especially when you seemed to be enjoying it. Besides, I've been dealing with this since I was a kid, I'm used to it by now," he said, though to you it sounded almost like he was trying to convince himself.
You scoffed quietly, "Liar. It obviously still really bothers you. And that's okay. You don't have to endure everything, sometimes it's okay to just... let something hurt. And to let someone else help you deal with it. And what am I here for if not to be someone you can rely on? That's what partners do."
Matt didn't respond at first, but he did wrap his arms around your waist, drawing the two of you even closer together. After another brief stretch of silence he asked, "But what about the rest of dishes? I should finish those." Even without looking you could hear the smile in his voice clueing you in; he was joking, and had no intention of getting up.
You giggled as you wrapped your arms around his shoulders, one hand gently resting over the ear that wasn't pressed to your chest, and the other running your fingers through his hair, back and forth over his scalp. "Don't worry about that, I'll take care of those too, after things quiet down," you said.
He closed his eyes and let out a long sigh, as you felt him slowly relax against you completely. "Thank you," he said, barely louder than a whisper.
"Like I said, it's what I'm here for," you said with a warm smile, before leaning in slightly to kiss his forehead. As you continued to hold him and run your fingers through his hair, you also began to hum a gentle tune, the sound of your voice and the rhythm of your heartbeat creating the sweetest lullaby he'd ever heard.
Now, this was a perfect moment for the both of you.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is my first time writing in months, first time ever writing for Matt, which I've been wanting to do for ages, and my first time writing on tumblr in general, so thanks @imsofansie for the prompt that finally got me off my ass and writing again. Hope you, and anyone else that happened across it, enjoyed it. ☺
Thinking about matt catching you staring at yourself in the mirror too long after a shower you both took together. Hands pressing on your tummy as you assess self consciously in the mirror, a soft pinch of your skin that you can't tell if it's natural or because youve potentially gained weight.
About how he'd walk right on over to you, his chest flush to your back.
"What're we doing here?" He muses out low against the shell of your ear.
"Nothing," you try to straighten up and make yourself feel slimmer when his hands smooth over your hips to let his palms come flush with your bare skin of your tummy.
"..For the record, I think you're perfect just the way you are," Matt murmurs against your shoulder; the drag of his lips and the light scratch of his stubble. Your heart skips a beat.
"Matt," you try to gently gripe but he has none of it when he starts pressing kisses to your shoulders.
"Shh, Angel. Someone needs to show this body just how it deserves to be worshipped; how perfect it really is. Let me love you like you should be."
Matt seeks out every part of yourself you're insecure with and kisses. Featherlight touches against your skin, hushed whispers when he speaks to you.
"I love the sound of your voice, the beating of your heart. Every curve and dimple, mole and freckle. I love the scars, I love all the things you hate about yourself. You're so perfect to me, Angel..."
Matt Murdock X Reader: Safe and Sound
Tumblr media
Summary: Matt loses his hearing and you come to the rescue.
Warning: None(i think) this is just fluff
Matt Murdock did not easily get despaired. Being a lawyer meant he needed to keep his mind in a state of constant stability in order to do his job the best he could. His night job also required a steady mind because any slip up could cause the loss of a life. Despite all of this Matt couldn't manage to calm himself when his hearing stopped working. He had already lost his sight years ago which meant the only thing he could rely on to survive was the rest of his senses, his hearing being one of the most important ones. So it's safe to say that when he stopped being able to hear the noise of Hellfire's kitchen and the clinking of glass crashing onto the floor he panicked. Out of a sudden Matt's world had gone completely dark. The silence suffocated him and no matter how loud he screamed he couldn't seem to make it stop.
He was all alone.
Alone and vulnerable.
You strolled down the streets a shopping bag in one hand and the keys to Matt's apartment grasped in the other. You walked up the stairs calmly, stopping to give Matt's neighbours a cheery good morning as you went. Completely unaware of what was happening to your favorite brunette. You’d made it to Matt's apartment without any issues, your hands fiddled with the keys as you tried to find the correct one to open the door. Then you heard the most blood curdling scream coming from inside the apartment. Your head snapped up at the sound, the hand holding the grocery bag instinctively releasing the item as you desperately tried to pry the door open. You knew about Matt's double life so you shouldn’t be worried about a scream. What made the hairs on your arms stand up was the fact that Matt was the one screaming.
Desperately screaming.
And if there was one thing you knew Matt Murdock never was was desperate.
You managed to get the door open, your shoes clanged loudly against the wood flooring as you raced into the living room. Your eyes searched the room quickly, trying to find some intruder or any sense of a break in but everything seemed to be in the right place, except for the pieces of glass that littered the floor near the kitchen. You moved towards the broken cup, kneeling down to get a better look at the contents. It is possible Matt had been poisoned? You were just about to reach out to grab a piece off the floor when another scream broke out through the silent room. Your eyes snapped to the place where the noise had come from, your gaze falling on Matt's frame. You rushed over to him, your hands reaching out to touch his body.
“Matt, what's wrong? Why are you-”
The moment your hand touched his arm Matt snapped into action, his hand wrapped around your throat with a strength you often forgot he had. Your own hands made their way to Matt's forearm trying with all your might to stop him from choking you.
“Matt…”
Your voice barely came out, not that it mattered anyway Matt couldnt hear you. You looked around, searching for something to get him to realize that he wasn't in danger. Your eyes fell onto Matt's other hand, the one that had remained at his side. You used your little amount of strength, the lack of air was making you lightheaded, to grab his other arm and drag his hand towards your face. For some reason Matt didn't resist, he let you guide his hand to your cheek. The moment his hand made contact with your features his eyes lit up in recognition. He immediately let go of your throat causing you to gasp for air. Your hands went to the floor, trying to steady yourself as you breathed in some much needed oxygen. Matt's hands went to try and grab onto you but you flinched away, the survival instinct still kicked into your system. And he felt it. Matt felt the way your muscles contracted away from him. He couldn't see or hear you but an image of your face formed inside his brain, your eyes wide with fear as you looked at him. Like he was some sort of rabid animal. In a way he believed he was.
You stared at the floor trying to get your bearings together. Matt called out your name, making you look at him. Your eyes found his brown ones, watching as his eyebrows furrowed with worry. He called out your name again a little louder this time and you realized that he couldn't hear anything at all. You crawled towards him. Matt felt the floorboards creak underneath him as you moved. Your hand went to his face but this time instead of snapping at you Matt closed his eyes, nuzzling into your palm. You felt Matt's tears on your palm as you caressed him.
“I’m sorry.”
He sounded so broken.
You moved your body in between his legs, your arms wrapping around his neck to pull him into your embrace. Matt nuzzled into your neck, the smell of your perfume invading his nose and making him feel safe. Your body was warm around him, a big contrast to the coolness of the wall behind him. He couldn’t hear but he wasn't scared anymore because he wasn't alone now. Now he had you and you would never let anything happen to him. Ever. Just like he would never let anyone hurt you.
You managed to guide Matt to the couch so that way he could be comfortable as you tried to figure out what to do about his hearing. You would have to take him to a doctor. That was the only thing you could think of. But how the hell were you supposed to guide him through the streets of new york without either of you getting put into risk. You reached into one of the kitchen drawers searching for the kettle you knew would be there. Tea would help you think and maybe it would calm Matt down enough to get him to sleep. Perhaps once he had gotten the rest he needed his hearing would come back to him.
Matts lay on the couch, his hands pulling at the blanket you’d placed on top of him. He wondered what you were doing. He knew you hadn’t left because he could still smell you. He wondered how he hadn't noticed the scent when you had walked in but then again he was in such a panicked state he hadn’t been paying enough attention to things. A new scent filled his nose. It was a slightly citric smell but not strong enough to be some kind of juice. Matt moved his head in the direction of the smell. Tea. You were making him orange tea. If it had been another time he would have laughed but it seemed silly to laugh given the circumstances.
A low melody entered Matt's ears. At first he thought he had imagined it but then he heard a clink of metal and the sound of shoes on the wood floor. You were humming as you walked around the kitchen and Matt could hear you.
He could hear you.
You were about to take the mugs filled with tea over to the couch when two arms grabbed you and turned you around. You looked up at Matt, your heart beating quickly. When had he gotten up from the couch? You hadn't even heard the floor creak behind you but then again that was kind of Matt's thing. Being quiet was a must when you fought bad guys in the night.
“Matt can you-”
“I’m so sorry. I would never hurt you on purpose.”
Matt pulled you into his chest, his body molding itself around your fame. You froze for a moment before wrapping your arms around his neck.
“It’s okay Matty. You were scared and you reacted. I know you’d never hurt me intentionally.”
Matt let out a small sob as he held you.
“Everything was dark. I couldn't… i didn't know what-”
“Shhh, It's alright you’re okay. I'm here now.”
Your hands wrapped themselves in Matt's hair as the two of you hugged.
“If you hadn’t done something… if i had…i’d never forgive myself.”
“Matthew, stop it. It was a mistake and I'm okay. You would have noticed. I know you would have.”
It was futile to argue with you. Matt knew you would never believe he could harm you. And that's what worried him because when his hands had been around your throat he wasn't thinking of anything else. He wondered if you were right, perhaps he would have noticed in time and stopped. But a small part of him thought that he only would know when it was too late. Tears welled in his eyes for the second time that day. His body slacked in your arms the emotions he’s held in for so long taking a toll on him. You sunk to the floor due to Matt's weight, one of your hands grabbing onto the counter for support. Once you two were sitting on the floor Matt buried his head into your chest, his strong arms gripping onto you for dear life. You felt Matt's tears soak through your shirt, causing some to well up in your own eyes. You hated seeing him this way but you were glad he trusted you enough to show this side of himself. You stayed like this for a while. Matt clinging onto you as he cried, you caressing him as he did so. Then Matt's head snapped up from its position, his face facing yours. One of his hands found their way to your cheek, his fingers tracing your features slowly. His thumb found your lips and he heard your heartbeat fasten slightly at the action. You had closed your eyes the moment he had placed his hand on your face, the thought of looking at him making you nervous. Matt called out your name. It came out as a whisper. So low that maybe if he hadn't been so close you wouldn’t have heard him.
“Yes?”
There was silence for a moment as Matt contemplated if this was a good moment. Every thought of doubt left his mind when he remembered the feeling that had invaded his chest when he realized you’d come to help him. The immediate peace that had consumed him when you pulled him into your body. Matt placed his hand underneath your chin, guiding you to look up at him. He could hear your heart berating, he could feel you breathe on his lip and he could smell your perfume, a scent he was sure he would never tire of.
“Matt?”
God he loved the way his name sounded on your lips.
“You alright?”
That's when he kissed you. Your hands tensed before reaching up to hold Matt's cheeks. He pulled you onto his lap, his arms wrapping around you once again. You wondered if this was all just a really realistic dream. It seemed almost impossible that after all these years you were in Matt's kitchen kissing him with everything you had. The years of bottled feelings had come to an end. Your heart felt as light as a feather and even though you didn't know it Matt had never felt happier. Matt placed his forehead against yours as he tried to catch his breath.
“I am now.”
You let out a laugh making him smirk.
“You have no idea how long I've wanted to do that.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“I didn't want to hurt you.”
“You could never hurt me Matt.”
“Yeah but my life isn't exactly safe. The people I love end up getting hurt. I didn't want to put a target on your back.”
“Hey, I think I should be the one who decides whether I want to be a target or not. Plus I'm in this. I have been in it since that day I stitched you up. So if anyone put a target on my back it was me. Not you.”
“You’re one tough cookie.”
“Yeah I know. It’s why you love me.”
Your eyes widened at your words realizing what you had said. You worried you had assumed too much, after all Matt had never officially said he loved you.
“You bet it is.”
With that Matt pulled you into another kiss. You melted into his body, feeling like the happiest person alive. The floor was cold and the position was starting to hurt Matt's back so you both got up. You went to look at the tea you had placed on the counter.
“Teas gone cold.”
“Leave it.”
You listened to Matt, letting him guide you to the couch. You watched as he climbed onto the sofa before opening his arms to you. You understood the message climbing onto the couch and laying on his chest. Matt's hands went to your hair, massaging your scalp tenderly. You let out a hum of approval as you snuggled more into his frame.
“Thank you.”
“For what?”
“For being here. For sticking around, even though it’s dangerous.”
“Well, we do all kinds of crazy things for people we love.”
Matt smiled at your words. Love had always been something he had wanted. At the same time he always feared for those he loved. However right now he couldn’t care less. You loved him, he loved you and neither of you would let anyone get in the way of that. Matt listened to the sound of your breathing as you began to fall asleep. For the first time in a long time the world around him seemed to go quiet. He drifted into sleep, your warmth luring him into peaceful slumber. For once Matt wasn’t plagued with nightmares instead his dreams were filled with images of you. He was safe. Completely safe because he had you and nothing was going to change that. Not if he had anything to say about it.
New Year's Day | Matt Murdock x Reader
Masterlist
Pairing: Matt Murdock x Reader
Summary: You recount your history with Matt and the highs and the lows of your relationship.
Warnings: Fluff, descriptive writing & lack of dialogue, mentions of blood, but this is mostly very tame
Word count: 2.5k
A/n: This One-Shot is dedicated to my bestie, @blackshadowswriter. I'm a bit late, and I'm sorry for that. It took me a bit to finish. I just want to tell you how much I love and appreciate you. I also know you love Taylor, so I thought "why not write a fic and use as many song references as possible? She's going to LOVE that!" You're my favorite person in the world and you deserve this. I love you. I'm all out of words because I'm anxious as hell about showing you this. It took me two days to finish. I wanted it to be as good as I could make it. I'm still not 100% sure, but I never am when it comes to giving gifts. I hope you like it <3 (This is also why I'm not tagging anyone else because this is a gift for my best friend and I intended it as such)
Tumblr media
From the moment you bumped into him on the corner street of your favorite café, you knew that he was the kind of chance that would only come around once in a lifetime.
It wasn’t like you, at least not back then, to buy a stranger a coffee. And it was even less like you to give him your number afterward.
You had never been big on dating at that point in your life. You used to take things exactly the way they came to you, and dating never really seemed to fit into that narrative.
You preferred to lose yourself in your own world, a world where no one could touch or hurt you the way you’ve been hurt so many times in the past by people who claimed to care about you—people who claimed to love you, and in the process, you lost sight of the fact that there are still a handful of good people out there.
No one can blame you for thinking like that though. Your heart has been broken one too many times, and not just by broken relationships.
Deep down, you craved to find someone capable of understanding all of you, not just the pretty parts. You almost felt pathetic for pretending you didn’t need it and still thinking that way.
But deep down, you craved to find someone who wouldn’t be afraid of sticking around, someone who would never leave you because life tends to get hard.
It seemed nearly impossible to find a person like that without breaking your own heart, so you decided to retreat into your shell. Better to keep your heart safe and protected than put yourself out there and be broken all over again, right?
Those stupid love songs on the radio and the endless romantic stories of your friends’ dating lives, however, fueled your need for the same kind of connection only a few songwriters know how to put into words.
You wanted to fall in love, find the right person, and heal. You wanted to figure out why love wasn’t like the burning red of sex and passion but golden, like daylight. A love living for. A love fighting for.
You felt so stupid, secretly pining for an innocent childhood dream that eventually got crushed after years of heartbreak, but that is what happens when someone becomes chronically lonely. You turned to daydreaming because at least in your head, your life could be perfect. Not just good, not just livable, but filled with love and happiness.
Truth be told, when you’re your own worst enemy and have an inner saboteur set out to destroy everything that could be remotely good for you because you truly believe you don’t deserve it, it’s hard to allow yourself to be open. So perhaps that is why you chose to lock yourself away and live in delusion instead. Not facing reality became standard procedure in your way of life.
You tried blaming it on your past, your broken relationships, and disappointments, and while that played a big part in your trauma, you also slowly started to realize that you might have been hurting yourself so you wouldn’t have to open up ever again.
In an attempt to erase all the problems, you became the problem. You became your worst enemy, someone chasing ghosts that stayed long in the past and only came back to haunt the living shit out of you. But that’s a survivable condition.
You tried therapy, you tried turning your life around and starting anew, and while that helped you find a job you love, find a nice group of friends, and make peace with what’s been broken, nothing else seemed to change.
You had barely started putting yourself back together again when you bumped into him. You were late for a meeting, so your focus was on your phone instead of the street before you.
It was your fault. He was just trying to make his way over the sidewalk, his cane tapping in a steady rhythm to make his way forward, and you stepped right in the middle of it.
You remember him grabbing your arm, catching you before you could fall. He wasn’t even irritated. When you looked up in shame, seeing the red glasses and the came, you begged for the floor to open up and swallow you whole.
“I’m so sorry,” you said. “I wasn’t looking. Are you okay?”
But before you could go on a rant about your stupidity, he cut you off, and in the silkiest voice possible, he said, “I’m fine. Don’t worry about it. Are you?”
“What?”
“Are you okay? You seem in a bit of a rush. Don’t want you to accidentally bump into a car next.” He chuckled, adjusting his glasses. Blood rushed to his cheeks. “That was a bad joke, sorry.”
You just about melted. “It’s okay,” you found yourself chuckling. “And so am I. I was too focused on my phone. That was my fault.”
“Don’t blame yourself. It happens,” he said. He was so calm about it, unlike other New Yorkers you’ve met before.
Maybe the fact that you found him extraordinarily attractive and easy to be around compelled you to ask if you could buy him a cup of coffee to make up for bumping into him, completely abandoning your plans to make it to your work meeting five minutes late.
He introduced himself as Matthew. A lawyer. Not one of those rich defense attorneys who simply do it for the money. No, he does it to help people, and you fell for him right then and there.
Maybe it was fate, maybe it was destiny, or maybe it was just dumb luck, but that day, when you got home after work, his number in your phone and a stupidly giddy smile on your flushed face, you knew that you’d somehow been enchanted to meet him.
You never believed in love at first sight until you bumped into Matt Murdock, but the second you did, your life flipped upside down and changed in ways you could have never predicted.
It is possible that the song playing over the speakers in the café right before you bumped him played a part in how you perceived the interaction. You’ve never been one to believe in coincidences. Nothing is ever accidental, and neither was your meeting. It couldn’t have been.
You found each other when you needed someone, anyone, both of you, and it stuck. Thankfully, it did.
Summer that year was cruel with New York drowning in an excruciating heatwave. You’d been meeting up with Matt for a couple of weeks, but you didn’t have it in you to put a label on whatever delicate thing was starting to build between the two of you. You didn’t want to wrap your hand around it and accidentally shatter something you could see growing into something more in the future.
He was unlike anyone you’d met before, and he treated you in a way that made you believe, finally, that you are worthy of love. Not just giving but receiving because Matt himself struggled to see his worth after years of being disappointed and being there for everyone but himself.
Love is a fragile thing though, and you have never been quite good with fragile things.
After a night of drinking away your sorrows at a nearby bar, you made your way to his apartment. You took a cab, too wasted to find your way there by yourself. You remember that you were crying; you were miserable and loathing yourself for several reasons that didn’t even make sense to you then.
When you arrived there, you knocked on his door. You didn’t get an answer. Just as you started to turn around and make your way back outside, you could hear a thud from the other side of the door. Panic settled in. You didn’t even hesitate before you opened the door, which was surprisingly unlocked, and made your way into the dark interior of his apartment.
Finding your blind, catholic not-boyfriend in a pool of his own blood, wearing a leather-clad suit with the horns of the devil had not been on your to-do list until that night. Reality hit you just as fast and knocked sobriety back into your senses as the adrenaline started to take over.
He let out a grunt. Your name passed his lips. He sounded so weak, so fragile, and you just stood there, your heart pumping too much blood for your body to handle.
“What the fuck?!” you said. You didn’t yell, you didn’t snap, you simply didn’t know how to process this information.
You were well aware of the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen parading outside at night, beating up criminals and giving them a good fright—Matt did not fit the picture you had of the guy until you saw him lying there, obviously injured.
“It’s not what it looks like,” he said hoarsely. He tried to roll over, but the pain turned out to be too severe.
Needless to say, he passed out on you without a proper explanation, and you somehow had to use what little you could remember from first-aid to help this bleeding mess of a man. You feared that you would lose him that night, and that was when you realized that, on top of falling for him, you didn’t care who he was, you only needed him to live.
When he woke up to you hovering over him, he groaned. “I’m sorry,” was all he said. “I’d understand if–”
“Don’t talk,” you cut him off with a finger on his lips. You wouldn’t let him push you away. Not after everything you’d been through.
He tried to sit up. “I didn’t know how to tell you.”
“It’s not exactly something you lead with on a first date. I get it. What I don’t get…”
“I didn’t lie,” it was his turn to cut you off. You remember looking up at him, and you heard him out. You had to. In your mind, there is an explanation for everything, and you were once again proven right at that moment.
He bared his life story to you, how he survived through tragedies no human should ever have to face. How he turned blind, how his senses heightened, and how he lost the one person he could always count on. When his father died, something changed in Matt. He tried to go straight, to do his father proud, but he couldn’t ignore this desperate need for justice forever. He felt cursed. So, he became someone who could make a difference, and not just as a lawyer.
He expected you to walk out, but you didn’t. You saw him for who he was, and you accepted him.
“I think I’m falling for you, and it scares the hell out of me,” you blurted out that night.
He stared at you, his unfocused eyes bewildered, his lips moving soundlessly as he tried to find an answer.
Just when you thought he would break your heart after putting your trust in him, he let out a shaky sigh and he kissed you.
He wasn’t ready to say it back just yet, but he spoke to you through actions that made you feel confident in what you were growing again.
You somehow already knew back then that Matt Murdock would be the man you one day would marry and spend the rest of your life with.
The truth is, you two have been through a lot throughout your relationship. It hasn’t always been smooth sailing, but you would be lying if you said that it wasn’t worth it.
From the moment you met him to the countless dates, sharing coffees over empty takeout containers, kissing in the rain, Daredevil, fighting over the beautiful women in his life that almost broke you, and fighting over his desperate need to push those away who only want what is good for him because he is own worst saboteur.
It all led you down a journey that turned out to be harder than expected and not at all the love story you envisioned, but it still turned out to be the best thing that has ever happened to you. He is the best thing that has ever happened to you.
You used to run away from happiness out of fear of getting hurt, and Matt did the same. He feared to admit it, but then he met you and he finally realized that running was of no use because you were more than ready to stick around through everything. Through every disaster and heartache—through every broken bone, you stuck around.
You saw something in him from the moment you met that no one can ever take away. You got a taste of heaven from the devil himself, and even though he was darker than the sunshine you wished for in your life, you managed to find a way to bring some light into his life.
You are sunshine, even on your worst days, and he’s midnight rain. But you love the rain. You love him.
Your first kiss happened in the rain. He took your hand and asked you to dance, and you did. You danced to the sound of the raindrops pattering against the asphalt beneath your feet, and it was the most beautiful thing you’ve ever seen—Matt engulfed in the soft moonlight, his hand in yours, and a big smile on his irresistible lips.
You want more of those nights. Even the nights you’ve had to patch him up or hold him as he broke down from all the weight he often enough carries on his shoulders, you want more of those. You want all of them.
You want him and all the strings attached to him, no matter how painful because ever since he can remember, people have walked out on Matt and hurt him in ways you can only fathom. You don’t want to be that person.
He opened up to you. He decided to be vulnerable. He stood with you through everything and fought for you when you thought you two wouldn’t last.
He gave you his best smile and his tears, and he laughed with you every night that you waited up for him to come home safely. He quickly became the moonlight to your sun—it is a different kind of light, but it is a light that sustains you nonetheless.
You want all of his laughter and never miss it again. You want his smiles. You want his tears. You want to spend every waking second with him. You want to miss him and welcome him back home after an agonizingly long night of worrying. You want to cheer him up in court and be his lucky charm. You want to wear his initial on a chain around your neck, in Braille, because he got it for you on your birthday.
“I know I don’t own you,” he said to you, “but I love you. And I know you. I want you to carry me close to your heart the same way I’ll always carry you close to mine.”
And his, you are. You’re no one else’s but his, and even if that sounds a bit territorial, you don’t care. You want all of it and more because it’s Matt you’re talking about, no one else. Not a stranger but the man you love so desperately it hurts sometimes.
All the girls he loved before don’t matter because he’s got you now. You forgave him more times than he probably deserved. You held on when he barely had any strength left. In return, he has shown the same kind of devotion to you time and time again. How can you ever say no to any of that when you are so in love?
All those memories replay in sudden flashing sequences right in front of your inner eye. You love him more than anyone has ever loved him. You pulled him out of a very dark hole. You saved his life. And he saved yours.
As he’s kneeling in front of you now, your hand in his and clutching the small, velvety box in his other, your life passes by before your eyes. Your life alone and your life together. You recount every memory in a millisecond, too shocked to even comprehend what is happening. But it is happening.
Matt Murdock is kneeling on the floor before you, the glitter, confetti, and sticky champagne someone spilled earlier most likely leaving a stain on his good dress pants, but he remains unwavering in his decision to open that little box and show you what he’s been hiding for a while.
It’s a diamond ring, something he probably took months to save up for. It’s small yet elegant, and it’s staring right at you. He’s taken his glasses off to try and do the same. You would marry him with paper rings, that much is true.
Matt says your name oh-so-softly. “Will you marry me?” Four words that stop your heart and restart it at the same time.
He sees right through you. You see right through him. Even in your worst times, you were there for each other, and now he’s asking you to spend the rest of your life with him. Together. To give him all of your days and nights and he will give you all of his in return. He is asking you the question you’ve been wondering if he would ever ask it, and he did.
The fireworks go off in the distance, in your stomach, everywhere. The new year has rounded the corner. People are cheering and celebrating around you, but you don’t pay attention to them.
The clock strikes midnight and with the softest smile, you say, “Yes.” You don’t need to tell him that you would do it a million times over because he knows. He knows your heartbeat, and he knows that you would never lie to him.
He doesn’t waste time to pull you into his arms and kiss you softly, passionately, as if both of your lives depend on it.
It’s a bit cliché, to get proposed to on New Year’s Eve. To start the new year with the man you love and a ring on your finger. But that only means that you will still be together on New Year’s Day, and all the days after that.
Matt chose you. You chose Matt. You chose a life together that is as unpredictable as they come, but at least you have each other to hold onto.
And he will never be just the stranger that you bumped into in front of your favorite corner café ever again. You have him now. Maybe that was your plan all along. Maybe you are the mastermind he knows that you are. None of it was accidental.
And now, Matt Murdock is yours. Forever and always.
Christmas Eve
~ I have multiple things I'm currently writing but it might take a bit before they're posted. Between being sick and now having an ear infection I want to do literally nothing
~ Matt and Reader celebrate their first Christmas together ~
You and Matt didn't get together until after Christmas of last year, meaning this is your first Christmas as a couple. Before, being friends meant Christmas never had this kind of pressure to give the perfect gifts.
But now it's different. You've been worrying all month about finding the perfect gift for Matt. It's hard to shop for someone who keeps insisting all he needs is you. As sweet as that is, you already know he has something for you. You refuse to give him something in return.
“Foggy, I'm serious. I've been everywhere in Hell's Kitchen. I can't find anything.” Today is Christmas Eve, and you still haven't found anything good enough to give Matt
“I've had his gift picked out for months.” Foggy shrugs from across you.
“Of course you have, and I should have one too, but now that we're dating it feels like there's all this dumb pressure.”
“Matt will love whatever you give him. You don't even have to get him anything. Just spend the day naked, and he'll be more than happy.”
“I hate you. You are zero help.”
“You're putting too much pressure on it. Nothing has changed just because you're dating now.”
“What did you get, Marci?”
“Some of her favorite perfume and a necklace.”
“Ugh, she'll love that.”
“I know. She's easy to shop for.” He finishes off the rest of his sandwich and wipes his hands on his pants. “I have a meeting with a client. Are you good?”
“Yeah, I'm good. I'll figure it out. Bye Fog.” He nods at you and walks back to the office.
On the way back to Matt's apartment, you walk by a little store having a Christmas Eve sale. The best part is they have an adorable daredevil stuffie in the window.
It's exactly what you would've gotten him in the previous years. It's perfect.
“What did you get?” Matt asks the second you walk in the door. Smelling the paper bag it came in.
You walk over to him on the couch, placing the bag on the counter, and sitting in his lap. “I can't tell you it's for Christmas.”
“I thought I said you didn't have to get me anything.” He gives you one of those beautiful smiles he has. It's unfair how he always looks this good. He hasn't changed out of his work clothes, now just sitting in his dress pants and shirt.
“And I thought I said if you get me something, I'm getting something for you.” You run your hand softly through his hair, enjoying his touch after a day apart.
“I don't want you to spend money on me.”
You roll your eyes at him. “If you keep saying that I'm gonna spend all of my money on you until I go bankrupt, and then I'll be homeless.”
“You wouldn't dare.”
“You wanna bet?”
“Fine, you can spend as much money as you want on me.” He looks so cute when he pouts.
“That's what I thought.” You lean down to kiss him for the first time since you got home. “Hi, Matty.”
“Hi, sweetheart.”
“How was work?” You turn your head to lay on his shoulder.
“It was good. It's a lot slower close to Christmas.”
“Hm, good. Y’know, Foggy suggested I spend tomorrow naked as your Christmas present, but you definitely wouldn't like that.” You giggle as his face turns up in fake disgust.
“Oh no, that would be terrible. I wouldn't enjoy that at all.”
“Yeah, that's what I thought.”
“Or maybe that's my gift to you.”
“Oh no, can't both be naked. What would we do all day?” You ask in fake concern. He leans up to kiss you again, but you pull away. “I have to go wrap your present.”
“No, do you have to do that right now?” He pouts.
“Yes, I do. You're adorable when you pout.” When you go to stand, he follows you with an arm around your waist.
“Can't it wait?”
“No, it can't. Christmas is tomorrow. Matthew let me go.” You use his real name to display your seriousness, although it's not as effective when you're laughing.
“You don't have to wrap. I can't see it anyway.”
“Matt!” You laugh. “I'm wrapping it, and you can't stop me. So why don't you stay here and order us some dinner? Okay?”
“Fine, I'll just stay here all alone.” He plops back on the couch as you shake your head at him.
“Have I ever told you how dramatic you are?”
“All the time.”
“Yeah, I'll be right back.” You go into the bedroom to wrap Matt's present in leftover wrapping paper. Matt has no idea people have made anything daredevil-related.
“See, that took me like two minutes.” You announce to Matt as you walk back into the living room.
“That was way too long.” You move to sit with him once again.
“Why are you so clingy today?”
“No reason, it must be the Christmas spirit.”
“Hmm, yeah, this Christmas does have a lot of spirit.”
“The first Christmas after we met, I was gonna ask you out.” You turn to look at him in disbelief.
“What? Why didn't you?”
“I was nervous, and you didn't show any signs of liking me.”
“No signs of liking you!? Matt, you could hear my heart.”
“I could, but I assumed it sped up like that because you were anxious about meeting a new person.”
“And you thought I was like that for two years?”
“I didn't want to ruin anything!” He defends. “Hey, why didn't you do anything!?”
“Because I didn't want to ruin anything!?”
“Exactly!” You both laugh at the direction this conversation has taken.
“Well, we're together now, so it was all worth it.” You point out.
“Yes, it was.” He smiles and pulls you closer. Your head lays on his chest.
“Wait a minute, Matt, I told Karen I liked you multiple times while you could hear?”
“Maybe it was a different Matt.”
“Matt, what the fuck?” You laugh again.
“I liked you. I just didn't believe you liked me the same amount.”
“You liked me?”
“Yes, I liked you, now I love you.”
“You're lucky you're so sweet 'cause sometimes you have no common sense.” He plants a kiss on your forehead.
“You have just as much common sense as me.”
“Uh oh.”
Tumblr media
You wake up the next morning to the smell of peppermint and the faint sound of Christmas music filling the apartment.
“Morning, sweetheart.” He comes into the room with a mug of hot chocolate. He hands the mug to you as he sits next to you on the bed.
“Good morning, baby. What's all this for?”
“Well, it's our first Christmas together. I figured it should be a little special.” As you listen to him, your heart warms.
“Thank you, Matty. You're amazing y'know.”
“I do, thanks to you.”
“Hm, good. So what do you have planned?” You sit up in bed.
“I think first we should open our gifts, then we'll hang out with everyone.”
“Sounds good. You're going to love what I got you.”
“You're gonna love mine too.” He grabs your hands and pulls you out of bed.
You both make your way to the tiny Christmas tree sitting in the corner. Only two presents under it.
“Here you go, honey.” Matt hands you a small square box wrapped in red paper. “I had Karen wrap it.”
“I can tell. Karen also wraps presents perfectly.” When you pull the paper off the box, there's a black jewelry box. When you open the black box, there is a silver bracelet. “Matt, this is beautiful!”
“Look at the side.” You pull the bracelet out of the box and look at the side. On each side, there is an engraving. One side says ‘my heart,’ and the other is in braille. “It says my name.”
“Holy shit Matt this is amazing!” You throw yourself onto him in a tight hug.
“I'm glad you like it.” He has a giant smile at your reaction.
“I don't want you to spend money on me.” You mock his words from last night. “This must have cost so much.”
“I know a guy, don't worry.”
“Well, now my gift isn't as good in comparison.” You hand him the box containing the stuffie.
“Is this me?” He asks in surprise as he rips open the paper.
“Yes, it is. It's Daredevil merch.”
“They make this stuff?”
“Yes.” You laugh at his shock
“Thank you, sweetheart, this is so cute.”
“Yeah, and it looks just like you.” You joke. The little stuffed devil looks nothing like Matt.
“Merry Christmas.”
“Merry Christmas, Matt.” You lean your head on his shoulder, still admiring your bracelet.
You just left his apartment. He was sitting there, dick hard from teasing you. He pleaded with you to stay but you were already late for work. He sat in the living room uncomfortable. The head of his throbbing cock brushing against the fabric of his underwear, a bead of wetness saturates the garment.
“Fuck.”
He stands up to get a cold shower, to ease away the heat burning inside him. The hardness in between his legs pointing north, tenting in his sweatpants. Matt scratches his scalp in disbelief. He takes a deep breath and he smells it. Left on the chair in his small kitchen was your favorite knit sweater. It didn’t help Matt’s problem. His cock throbs more from your scent. The musky notes of your perfume and the subtle sweetness to it.
Matt huddles towards the sweater. He touches the soft fabric and brings it near to his face. Your scent, god, your scent. It reminds him of the way you’d hug his naked torso in the bedroom, or the way you’d hide your palms in them when the apartment gets cold. But most and foremost, the way his hands would go underneath them and feel your soft skin when you two kiss in the living room.
He goes back to the living room sofa with your sweater. If he could he would’ve buried his head in it. He contemplates his next action.
“Fuck it.”
He removes the knot in his sweatpants and pulls them down with his underwear. The garments pool in his ankles. His cock stands tall and thick. He pulls your sweater to your nose while his other hand starts stroking his dick. The please rushes throughout his whole body bringing him into euphoria. He moans calling out your name as pre-cum drips down his cock. He starts to run his hands across his abs, thinking of you touching him. He takes his fingertips to his hard nipples. He shudders from the sheer amount of pleasure. He pleaded on taking his phone to tell you what he was doing, how perverted he was masturbating to your scent. He wanted you to tease him more, drag out the orgasm for him, to edge him while you’re at work.
Sweat drips down from his nape. The heat enveloping his whole body. More pre-cum drips down from his tips making his strokes more slippery. He moans loader from the pleasure. Wanting to feel more he takes off his shirt and lays your sweater next to him. He feels the orgasm coming. He tightens his grip on his cock while his other hand teases his nipples. He wants you, so bad, he thrusts into his hand thinking of your body. He wants to feel the heat of your hole, the sound of your moans begging for him to fuck you. He fucks into his hand harder and harder until his thrusts become erratic. He bends over and cum shoots everywhere landing mostly to your sweater drenching it in his seed. He sits back panting, his wrist sore and wet.
“I guess I won’t be bringing my sweater today,” you said, standing near the kitchen counter.
“Love? I’m so sorry I didn’t mean to,” he said, still naked on the couch catching his breath.
“Well, I came back for it but I guess not,” you chuckle, walking to sit next to him. “But I guess I could be late for one more hour.”
You take his soft cock and start stroking while you bend down to kiss him. It starts to harden again as you straddle his thick thighs.
“No, go call your boss and tell him you won’t be coming to work today, sweetheart.” he pulls you into his embrace as he takes your clothes off.
It was a rare occasion that Matt Murdock woke up before you on a weekday. Well, you would think it’s rare since he often pretends to be asleep so that he can wake up to your kisses and he’s stopped using his alarm since you’ve started living together. Being late to work is always worth spending extra time in bed with you. Today was one of the days where he didn’t pretend to be asleep, it was a rare morning where he wasn’t waking up sore and hurting. The previous night wasn’t filled with you patching up his wounds while holding back tears, instead, it was the two of you laying side by side talking, laughing, and having fun. It made him sad to admit but it’s been a while since you had done that, had fun. Too long since you just basked in each other's company. He knows what he does makes it hard for him to love, which makes him even more grateful that you have made it clear that you’ll always be in his corner and you don’t want to give up on what the two of you have.
Matt doesn’t think he’s ever felt more appreciative in his life. He can feel that you’re alive and safe and well. With you laying on his chest like this your heartbeat reverberates through his body and into his soul. You’re calm, you’re happy. For months even in your sleep, he could tell you were carrying so much weight, there was so much you wanted to say that you felt like you couldn’t. You don’t have to worry about that anymore. He held you closer placing a lingering kiss on the top of your head, breathing in deeply, you smelled of mint-scented shampoo and more importantly him. He loved that. Matthew was so focused on thoughts of last night's talk he almost didn’t notice the shift in your breath and the natural increase of your heartbeat, telltale signs that you were waking up. Almost. But even if he did miss that Matt definitely wouldn’t miss the soft press of your lips against his skin. Right over his heart. Your heart is more like it.
“Matthew, do you have any idea what time it is?”
He had to chuckle at that, your voice was hoarse and you sounded the slightest bit annoyed. It was music to him, he loved it. “No I hadn't checked, I didn’t want to disturb you.”
“Too early, the one time we don’t have a bunch of adrenaline to keep us up is the time you decide to wake up early.”
“Bad timing. I know.”
“Horrible.” You’re smiling.
“The worst.” He’s smiling.
“Well you, my darling, are so so lucky that you have such a charming face because it’s too early;
You stretch out like a cat, a groan escapes past your lips as you plop back down onto Matt’s chest.
the sun is barely even up Matt.”
The tone of your voice betrays your words, you’re not that upset. More like delighted, actually. It was hard not to be with Matt when you have moments like this.
“Not like I could tell.” Matt knows he might get in trouble teasing you so early in the morning but he truly cannot help himself. When can he ever?
“Matt.” The sigh you let out was tired but playful, you were more than willing to put up with his teasing.
“You are ridiculous.”
“You love it~”
He’s right; you do. You really do.
“You’re lucky I do.”
I am lucky. He thinks. Incredibly so.
You shuffle off his chest and onto the space unoccupied on your queen bed. It’s cold from being unslept on and it makes you shiver. Almost immediately he’s chasing after you, wrapping his arms around your waist as he moves onto his side. He doesn’t pull you but it’s glaringly obvious You’re not leaving, he knows that but he wants you back where you were. You stay where you are on your side beside him. Your hand approaches his face brushing softly at the crease between his eyebrows that never seems to leave.
“I’ll let you waking up at such an ungodly hour slide since you seem so happy to see me.” Your hand is on his cheek now and you scooch closer allowing no space between the two of you.
He was. “I’m always happy to see you, pretty.”
“How would you know, hm?”
He smiles, turning his head so he can kiss the palm of your head. “I can tell.”
“Ridiculous.” You’re teasing him back. He knows that but he wants you to know he means it.
“It’s not ridiculous.”
“I know love. I know.” You kiss underneath his jaw, in the place you know he’s just the slightest bit ticklish in an attempt to hear him laugh. He does. He always does. You keep kissing him moving your way slowly down his neck. You stop for a moment and then you’re laughing.
“It is just a little bit though. How you know whenever someone is good looking.”
“I do not!” He denies it, of course, he does.  Matt’s acting shocked but he’s not. It’s not the first time you’ve questioned Matt’s uncanny ability to identify an attractive person and it probably won’t be the last.
“Matt Murdock you absolutely do.” Your words are intertwined with your laugh. He can feel your shoulders shaking against his chest and he loves it. Loves the sound, loves the feeling.
Matt doesn’t agree or disagree. Instead, he responds with a comment about how you’ve been hanging around Foggy too much and you argue that there is no such thing as too much Foggy Nelson and that he agrees to.
By now your kisses have traveled down to his chest and one lingers just a little longer over his heart and he’s basking in the feeling of your lips against your skin. You glance up at him and a warm feeling fills your chest. If you hadn’t felt his hands moving their way across the expanse of your back you would have thought he was asleep. His eyes were closed and he looked nothing less than relaxed, a rare feat for a man like him.
“Baby~” You call, voice light and airy. He hums, as an acknowledgment that he heard you. Your hand travels down his body to the partial erection you had been feeling against your thigh. While not wholly erect it’s prominent enough to feel through his briefs  “Nice to know more than one part of you is happy to see me.”
He jumps slightly, not expecting your sudden touch. Matt recovers quickly and soon he’s leaning into it as you stroke him over his underwear. “Every part of me is always happy to see you.”
 You gently push at his shoulder moving him to lay flat on his back. “Oh yeah?” Hovering over his face you lean in close lips barely an inch away from his.
“Yeah..” He whispers leaning up to close the gap between your lips but you pull away. You tease. He thinks. Matt’s about to let you know what he thinks but instead, a hiss leaves his lips as you’ve moved your hand inside his underwear and grasped his cock. Your hand feels cold against the sensitive skin but it isn’t unwelcome and it prepares him for when you pull him out of his briefs.
“Every part of me is happy to see you too ~” You whisper against his ear before you begin to travel down his body again. There’s no question what you’re going for but he stops you. Your attention is called to him as he grabs your arm gently and he shakes his head. As much as he loves the feeling of your mouth where he needs it most he wants you to stay up here with him. You obliged and made your way back up. This time you kiss him; he makes sure you do, practically ambushing you as soon as you’re in range. Matt has a firm yet gentle hold on your neck just under your jaw, fingers pressed right against your pulse point.
You’re stroking him how he likes long and slow with your finger occasionally catching on the tip and it time it does it makes him gasp against your lips. The sounds Matt makes as you stroke him are music to your ears low and from his chest. Slowly you move to straddle his hips and even through your underwear he feels heavy against you and it makes you groan. His hands move to your thighs and he encourages you to move your hips. This time he’s the one kissing your neck, moaning against your skin as you grind down onto him.  In true Matt fashion, he knows how to work that mouth of his. Open-mouth kisses trail down the side of your neck coming to a halt just above your clavicle. He’s chosen his target, taking the skin in between his teeth sucking and licking until you bruise. He’s cutting it close to the rule you have about no hickeys above the collar but at the moment you don’t mind too much. His lips move to that spot you love oh so much and it makes your breath stutter and your hips buckle.
“Matty.” It doesn’t come out as strong as you want it to but Matt knows exactly what you need.
“I know baby. I know.” Matt then flips you on your back pulling your underwear off in a smooth motion Matt’s crowding your space and you accept it happily. The feeling of his weight on top of you is more than welcome but you choose to tease him anyway.
“You’re heavy.” You groan and push at his shoulder with no real attempt to move him which only prompted him to put more of his weight onto you.
“Bear with me for just a moment baby.” He chuckled and before you could reply he was touching you right where you need him most. Your head drops against the pillows and you moan his name breathy and quiet. Matt reaches over to the bedside table and grabs a bottle of lube from inside the drawer,  you hear the cap open and close before his hands are back on you.
“I’ve got you, sweetheart.” He repeats it in a whisper as his lube-covered fingers prod at your entrance. You clench around him as he eases two fingers in.  He spreads his fingers wide drawing them in and out slowly. “That feel good?” You nod vigorously reaching out you wrap your arms around his neck pulling Matt in close. “Need you, Matty. Please.” You whispered breathlessly.
“I got you baby.” Matt continues to work you open his fingers pushing into you deep exactly where you need them, stretching you wide until you’re whining and your nails are digging into his back.
 “Need you inside.”
“Yeah, babe? Fuck…” And suddenly the waiting is too much for him as well, he needs you as much as you need him. He pulls away from you only for a moment to slip on a condom but then he’s back, hands grabbing at your thighs and cock prodding at your entrance. You both groan as he slips in the stretch of his cock isn’t unfamiliar to you. He finds all the right places right away. He sinks his entire weight into you and it makes you whimper just how full you feel.
Matt’s thrusts are slow and gentle but they reach deep. You’re not going anywhere there’s no need to rush.
“Yeah, you like that? Sound so good baby.” He leans in close for a kiss and you nod against his lips. Words lost upon you. Matt’s everywhere, he’s invading your senses, and all you feel is him. It’s overwhelming but it’s also perfect and you think about how it must be like for him living like this twenty-four-seven, ten times more intense. You think if you asked him he’d say something charming and cheesy like It’s the life I’ve always lived but you make it so much easier. The thought makes you laugh and of course matt notices.
“You know giggling at a moment like this isn’t usually a good sign.” He jokes and he’s got that smirk on his face that you know very well.  “What's going on in that head of yours huh?” He kisses the side of your face, across your cheek, and down your jaw as you had done earlier.
“Thinking ‘bout you Matt.” It takes you a moment to find your voice, it’s heavy as if you weren’t expecting to have to speak and it makes him laugh.
“Something good?”
“Always.”
“Good.” He whispers and continues his ministrations. When he feels your grip around him tighten and he knows he’s got you where he wants you. He pulls his hips back slowly and thrusts in sharp and quick. It makes you gasp and squeeze your eyes shut in pleasure. He continues that rhythm the tip of his cock hitting right where you find the most pleasure. Your moans are light and airy and it’s driving him crazy. “Right there huh? Make that sound for me again baby.” You couldn’t stop it if you wanted to he draws every little moan and whimper out of you.
You wrap your legs around his waist and tug at the short hairs at the back of his neck. “Oh baby, please go faster. Please.” How can he deny you when you sound like that? Matt obliges to drive his cock into you faster, forcing his arms under your body, wrapped around your back face buried in your neck. His nose pressed up right next to your pulse point.
“God you feel so fucking, good darling. Take my cock so good, you're squeezing the life out of me baby.” His words only make you clench harder and it draws a groan from his lips. “Matty…please..” You moan into his hair. Matt’s words caused heat to spread throughout your body and you can feel your orgasm fast approaching “You gonna cum pretty? Go ahead baby, I got you. I got you.”
Matt’s thrusts get more intense and you’re right there. Everything’s not enough until it is and you drop over the edge. Your body convulses, hips gyrating as your orgasm passes through your whole body. The moan you let out was loud, probably too loud for how early it was but you simply couldn’t hold it back. Matt’s movements don’t stop he fucks you through it but you clench down on him so tight it makes it hard to move. Very quickly he’s right there with you muttering curses under his breath. He keeps thrusting until neither of you can take it anymore and you both just have to lay there basking in each other’s company, breathing heavily and out of breath.
After a moment, when you’re a little more okay and a little less starstruck you pull his face from your neck. “Let me look at you baby.” You take his face in your hands and hold him close noses touching, his eyes are open and even though you know he can’t see Matt always has a way of looking into your soul and you love every bit of it.  “So pretty Matty.” Matt isn’t one to get shy easily but you can see the way his ears flush red and how he sinks deeper into your touch. He kisses you
“Love you, Matty.” You whisper into his ear.
“I Love you too darling.”
I'm very sorry for the 10-and-a-half-month-long wait! This was a long request, so I did try to put everything together in a way that makes sense. I hope you'll enjoy it!
The familiar click of the coffee pot registered somewhere in his keen hearing, but he didn't seem to notice. Matt was going through a series of motions, scrambling his eggs, flipping his bacon, getting his plate and mug ready for his breakfast, all while his mind walked on a frenzied march he couldn't keep up in the recollections of that night. That night was long gone, five days into the past, but it was still fresh and present to Matt, no matter the logic he came up with. He tried, and failed. Again and again. It haunted him in his few hours at nights of lying awake, and his days of paperwork and court affairs. Matt had to admit this could be something worse than he initially thought.
The last thing he needed was a new assassin in town.
Thin as a hair thread. That was how close Matt was to failing to save another's life. A criminal's life, but a life regardless. He almost lost it to the hands much more brutal than him. Much more merciless. Even more so than when Matt lost himself, haunted by his mistakes and Elektra's death, tormented by his own malice, of what he would be capable of had he let his pain consume him whole. The fact that someone was out there with such force and cruelty was alarming. It wasn't your ruthlessness that confounded Matt; he was no stranger to it, but everything about you.
You evaded his sweeps and blows as if they were nothing, as if he was only a martial arts enthusiast and not the Devil of Hell's Kitchen. The gracefulness in your moves made you look like a ballerina to his enhanced senses. The sharp gusts of air from your movement cut his skin like a dull blade, and Matt suspected the purpose was not to hurt him, but to warn. You rendered him almost helpless, meeting him for every strike. A good match in all the wrong ways, for all the wrong reasons.
You had the agility and deadliness of the Hand's lifeless soldier, which made Matt think you were one of them. Still, the steady rhythm of your heart said otherwise. It was as real as the sharpness of your dagger when it slid across his forearm. Your mercilessness was not the most fatal part of you. The precise delivery of your weapon almost took a life, and even though Matt prevented that from happening, he felt as if letting your victim live was your decision, not his. He was only a witness who was at the right place, at the right time. Your escape was silent and swift, leaving no trace for him to follow. No matter how hard he tried, he could only detect a subtle scent of wet earth in the air, and nothing else. Since then, Matt had spread himself thin, patrolling the Manhattan area, even as far as Brooklyn, asking for his friends' help in places he couldn't reach, like a confused hound dog on a blind chase. The clues he picked up were only fragments of a bigger picture you were a part of. Days passed, and the seed sprouted from his curiosity of you kept growing, yet his search gave him nothing to attach you to.
Not until tonight, when your ruthlessness struck again.
You took hold of the man's collar, tugging on his tie, making sure that it sat tightly at the base of his throat. His face turned a dangerous shade of red, blending in with the crimson liquid and purple bruises all over his skin. His mouth opened to take in desperate gulps of air as you wrapped the remaining blue-striped tie around his neck, making a noose.
"Pl-please … don't do this. I have a wife an-and … a daughter. I have a family. Please!"
You sighed, bored and fed up with what he told you. In the face of great danger and near death, they always said the same thing. You would know since you had lost count of the men and women who had told you they had families. Unfortunately, none of them was alive to testify that.
"I know you do, Eddie. I had one too, at one point. But they're all gone now …."
You tugged hard on his tie, making him choke on the restricted and precious breaths. His face, stained with tears, only stroked your confidence. You almost had him. Just a little more, and you would have your next victim. Or victims, if he was so generous as to inform you.
"Tell me names. Better yet, point me in their direction, and I just might spare you."
Eddie shook his head, whimpering pathetically.
"I can't. They'll know it's me. They'll kill me."
You ran your beloved weapon along the side of his torso, hinting at the possible chance of you cutting him up at any moment like he was a rag doll. You rested the edge of your blade against his bloated stomach while he tried to stay away from it as much as possible with his legs and hands bound. There was no use in doing that, but he desperately tried, wriggling and struggling against the confines.
"It's either me or them that will end your life. So choose."
You dipped the blade into his side. It wasn't too deep, just enough to draw blood. The metal parted his flesh with little resistance, smooth and easy as if cutting through a leaf. The man before you cried out in pain; his prayers were half screams, half cries and all the agony. He sputtered, choking on the words he desperately tried to get out.
"Imani! Imani Campbell! She's the head of security f-for the Stromwyns. She and h-her team have access to everything!"
You pulled the blade free, patting his face softly as you cooed at him.
"There we go. Wasn't that easy?"
The man sobbed uncontrollably. Blood seeped out from his dress shirt, staining the fabric a dark red. You registered a soft thud from behind; the sound, accompanied by a low voice, made its presence known.
"Let him go."
The deep timbre in his tone was familiar, even though you barely exchanged a word that night. Only grunts of exertion. Twirling the dagger in your hand playfully, you took hold of the hilt once more before slamming it into Eddie's temple, knocking him unconscious. What you might have to say to the man behind you might fall on Eddie's deaf ears since he was only a thin thread away from passing out, but you preferred not to leave that up to chance.
You turned around to face him, fastening your bloody dagger to the strap on your thigh. Your gaze assessed him as you took a few steps forward. The man from the night before returned with a fresh bandage on his forearm, courtesy of your blade.
"I'm sorry. Who are you?"
Your voice was light but alert. You pushed your tongue against the roof of your mouth, keeping the smile off your tone. You wondered what he had to say.
"I should be the one who asks you that."
You chuckled to yourself. An expected answer, but different from what you anticipated from him. You figured as much.
"I thought you should know who I am already, considering what you've been up to lately, Matt Murdock."
The muscles in his body were pulled taut in his straightened posture, locked up in alarm, and you didn't miss that.
"How do you know my name?"
You tsked, shaking your head in mock disappointment.
"Don't feign innocent now. You were looking for me, trying to sniff me out like a dog."
His hands balled tightly to the sides, and you could see the tension in his jaw, even from a safe distance away.
"How do you know that?"
"By doing the same thing as you did. I like to be five steps ahead of everything, you know? That's how I stayed out of your radar."
You were prepared and well-versed to the point it felt like a game. A game of hide-and-seek, catch-and-release. Just simple as that. You spoke over your shoulder as you turned on your heels, returning to the unconscious man.
"Now excuse me, I was in the middle of something."
He was silent and fast. Before you could give Eddie the second slap to his cheek, Matt seized you with his arms around your torso and dominant arm, dragging you away from Eddie. He backed you into the cement railing; the hard and rough texture dug into your back. He pinned your arms back, spiking pain and discomfort along your body. Nothing you could handle. Your heart rattled in your chest as you looked up at him; his laboured breathing reverberated and mirrored your own. You stayed like that for a few moments, studying each other. You felt no fear, yet your heart thundered, your blood pumping for something else.
To your surprise, he smirked as if he had caught onto your wandering thoughts and foreign feelings.
"You're not scared. You're not even frustrated. You're… excited."
You held your tongue, waiting for him to continue his assessment.
"Perhaps this has something to do with me. Having someone on your level."
You huffed a biting chuckle, your eyes trained on the part of his face exposed to you. Plump lips accentuated by light stubble, adding softness to his rugged intricacy. A strong jawline that you wouldn't mind caressing, stroking the scruffy hair on your fingertips. And putting your dagger to it. You would place your fingers on the delicate pulse on his neck while you did that, feeling the panic coursing underneath his skin. But you suspected your foe wouldn't be scared off by a sharp blade that easily.
"Maybe I do like a challenge. At last."
Fearless to the point of arrogance. Matt was dumbfounded, then it clicked: you didn't know who he was. You might be new to this city, its politics and underground scenes. Maybe you were here on a chase for something, someone dangerous, following the trail of blood, corruption and murders. It led you to his territory, which he had slowly but steadily returned to protect. When Matt told you as such, a skip in your heart told him he was right. You went still against him, and goosebumps rose along your skin. Still and rigid, a stark contrast to your confidence and playful manner just moments ago.
Either way, whether you were familiar with the area or not, Matt had to clarify one thing.
"You must stop what you're doing."
"Which is …?"
You dragged your sentence, feigning innocence. The slight lilt in your voice should irk Matt, but to his surprise, it didn't. It glided on his eardrums, soft and soothing, which had started to distract him. Just a little bit, Matt assured himself. He lied some more when he told himself that your body, pressing snugly against his, was not the reason for his slipping focus. Not at all. Your body was warm; Matt could feel it even through your suit. The unconscious man's blood on your gloves enveloped his acute sense of smell, steering him back to the conversation he was having with you.
"Killing those criminals. Taking lives that aren't yours to take."
You fell silent, and Matt could hear the grind of your teeth. The muscles in your jaw grew taut, and he had no doubt that he had struck a nerve. Matt paid extra attention to another scent entering his olfaction. Subtle, yet refreshing, like wet earth … after the rain. And all of a sudden, it made sense to him. Perhaps you used a scent like that to blend into the element around you, becoming one with your surrounding. Leaving no trace. Just like that night when he first met you. The more Matt learned about you, the more fascinated he became. But he wouldn't have known that yet. Not at that moment.
You pushed yourself up, pressing your chest flush with his. Your voice was low in contrast to your guards, which were high and tall, and you hoped they wouldn't topple over.
"Just like you said, they were criminals. I don't kill anyone that doesn't deserve it."
Your answer didn't satisfy him by the way his jaw clenched, his lips curved downward in disapproval.
"What they do is wrong, but that doesn't mean they deserve death. Two wrongs don't make one right."
Your hands tugged on the skin and bone shackles he had on you, but he wouldn't let up. Your skin prickled in frustration.
"I'm weeding the bad out. You should thank me since I'm doing you a favour."
He tightened the hold on you, making an imprint on your wrists.
"They deserve second chances for redemption. How can they change for the better if they're not given a chance to do so?"
Okay, now you were beyond annoyed. Who the hell did he think he was? To walk all over you, to jeopardize your mission. To act as if he was the one with authority.
"Stop with the fucking lectures! Not all of them deserve that."
You thrashed with all you might, desperate to escape his hold. But Matt held on.
"They're humans. They make mistakes, just like you and me."
That snapped something inside you, something that had always been there. You tipped your head back and slammed your head to his face. Matt let you go as he held a hand to his nose. You delivered a sharp blow to the base of his throat, right below his Adam's apple, effectively choking him. He sputtered, taking a few steps back, holding his throat while you followed him like a predator. Anger and grief took over, like a storm waiting to be unleashed.
"Spare me that bullshit!"
You grabbed his shirt, gripping it and pulling him back to you before throwing him against the brick chimney.
"If you know so much about the way this …"
Matt held a hand to his nose, swiping the runny liquid onto his hand. From the feel of it, a small part of his nose was splintered, but other than that, no serious and long-lasting damage. You took hold of him again, throwing him against the bricks.
"… thing works, then tell me. Tell me how it feels to have my entire life stolen from me. To have my family taken away, to have those barbaric so-called human beings abuse me, torture me, put drugs and chips inside of me like I'm no less than a toy? I'm nothing more but a weapon, a tool for their profit. And when I finally escaped and tried to have a normal life with a normal guy, they found me and took that away too?"
You leaned closer, and Matt could sense something other than his own blood. The salt of your tears, the blood rushing in your veins, fueling the rattling rhythm of your pulse.
"Tell me, Murdock. Tell me how it feels like to come home one day, and find your love's decapitated head on the bed you shared, in the only home you've ever known?"
And then there was nothing, only your heavy breathing and his; the wind died down, and the city carried on. Matt thought about the accident years ago, losing his sight, then his father. Stick came as abruptly as he left, and that was how he spent most of his teenage years alone and aloof. Matt couldn't shut out the clamour of crimes happening around him; he was helpless to it. When he decided to do something, to take charge, Matt lost more than he gained. Still, there was Foggy, who brought so much joy to his life. Foggy's presence was a blessing. Then came Elektra, who made him feel heard and understood when no one else could. Being with her was an ever-changing mesh of euphoria and affliction that stuck with him, before and after. The fights he had fought for the better only brought more pain to his life, full of losses.
The words manifested on his tongue, but he didn't say any of them. Your pain was your own, and it was immeasurable. Matt held both hands out in a gesture of peace. And when he spoke, the words were ripped right from his heart.
"I am sorry for everything that happened to you. I won't say that I understand everything what you went through. But I do understand why you're doing this. Trust me, revenge is not everything."
"No, you don't know anything about me."
Your tone was sharp. Final.
"Let me guess, you have some sob stories too?"
He swallowed hard, and you knew you were right.
"I guess that's why we turn out like this, huh? Inflicting pain on others because we can't bear our own."
It hurt more than the healing wound on his arm, than the forming bruise on his throat. It was as if your dagger had sunk into his chest and twisted until his heart was nothing but a mangle of tissues and vessels. He protected Hell's Kitchen; he had kept it safe with his violence. Deep under the overlapping layers of his good conscience, he knew it was another way for Matt not to face his own pain. The past year was the embodiment of that. No matter how much time passed, he knew that time would always stay with him, reminding him of the destruction he had made.
"Stay out of my way if you know what's good for you."
You turned on your heels, stepped onto the ledge and jumped. Your gracefulness landed you on the fire escape as you descended, blending in with the surroundings once more. Matt tipped his head back onto the warm bricks and caught his breath, deep in thoughts and the scent of you lingering behind.
Wet earth. Fresh rain. The saltiness of your tears.
Matt came home to his empty apartment; frustration and pain burned his skin, grating his insides. His throat hurt, the wound on his arm throbbed, and his nose stung, but at least it had stopped bleeding. Matt knew he would have to take it easy for the next few nights. Matt peeled off the dirty suit, undoing the hand wraps quickly. Standing in his boxers, he went to the kitchen and turned on the kettle. The small machine hummed as it heated the water inside as Matt prepared his tea. While waiting for the water, he went to the bedroom and grabbed a zip-up hoodie and sweats before gingerly them on, careful of his injuries. Matt went through the motion automatically because he didn't allow himself to stop and think. Not yet. The kettle whistled a high-pitched note, dragging him to the kitchen. Water was poured, tea steeped, and honey added. Matt settled down at the kitchen table with his mug, hissing softly as his aching muscles voiced their discomfort. Matt closed his eyes, letting the steam of chamomile soothe his eyelids before diving into everything he knew about you. Which was not much at all. But he had more now than he knew of you six nights ago.
Rubbing his throat, Matt took a sip of his honeyed tea. He recalled the sound of your voice, the inflection of it when you were angry. The piercing rawness of it when you cried. He got to learn another part of you that he had tried to reach. You were in the position to knock him out swiftly, to kill him even, but you didn't. You spared him of your own volition. He might not know your name, but he knew your pattern now. You struck precisely, seizing someone on the weaker links and climbing up. However, singling out one of the lawyers on the retainer for one of the most notorious crime families gave him a clue of what you came to New York for. Even though it was out of character for you, it gave him a hint of where you could go next, and Matt wasn't going to pass out on this chance. The crime family you targeted was someone he had an interest in himself. The Stromwyns. They were a force to be reckoned with, and from what he knew of you, you acted alone. It was personal from your history with them, and he suspected you wanted to take them down yourself. Matt would admire your bravery if it wasn't so reckless and incredibly foolish. But on what ground could he judge you, considering that he did the same thing?
Your fist curled tightly, your knuckles drenched in blood and mangled flesh of your own and your victims. But you wouldn't stop, not until you got what you wanted. A swift punch followed another on Imani's broken face. Her bodyguards and associates laid unconscious a few feet away, leaving only your ragged breaths and the woman's pained whimpers echoed in the destroyed meeting room. You usually wouldn't strike them at their base, where they could easily call for backup, which they did, but you felt particularly reckless tonight. You were up for a challenge, and you almost paid for it. The searing pain on your side was the throbbing proof. You wanted to speed your investigation along, too impatient to wait. You had done enough of that. Still, this stubborn woman before you wouldn't give in. You could feel your temper rising, and soon, you wouldn't be able to control it. Imani was a delicate knot in an elaborate scheme that you couldn't solve by cutting her string short. You didn't take out her whole team for nothing, especially when your venture for revenge ended up being something bigger, something more sinister than you thought.
You gave Imani's face a slap. She came to before you, despite her drooping eyelids.
"I know the Stromwyns are planning something big. Tell me what it is."
She gave a bloody smirk, her teeth stained red. She tried to keep her head straight, her eyes bored into you.
"No."
"Should have saved that energy telling me what I want."
Another jab, and she fell to the floor. You propped her up against the table, pulling out the blade concealed on your thigh.
"One last chance. I won't be so lenient this time."
The thumps of his boots made it to your ears, and you felt the air change slightly. Maybe it was just you. His footsteps drew closer on the once pristine marble floor behind you, entering the crime scene. You closed your eyes, already knowing what he would say.
"Don't do this."
You didn't bother standing up to greet him this time.
"I've killed before. This will change nothing."
"Believe me. It will."
His tone was the same. Kind, soft, imploring for the part of you that no longer existed. Yet, he still searched for it, drawing it out. You would lie if you said you couldn't feel the tug of his kindness and patience on your heartstring. It was just that you couldn't afford to follow his call.
"Why are you still trying? Why waste time on me?"
You had to know whether it was his Catholic guilt, and you were his charity case, or it was something else entirely. It wasn't like New York's shady marketplace lacked assassins for hire. You knew that as much.
"I was you before. You think you're irredeemable. But you're not. You still have a chance to turn around …"
Your real name on his tongue sounded foreign to your ears. It affected you in a way you didn't think possible. The sound triggered the alarm going off in your head, screeching in your ears. You slowly rose on your feet, exhaling an unsteady breath. You had isolated yourself and made acquaintance with no one. The shock of Matt finding out shot unnerving prickles along your skin. You used his name in vain to gain an advantage, while he used yours in the hope of steering you back to yourself with such an intricate tenderness. And that made you angrier than ever.
You closed the distance between you, wielding the dagger between your skilled fingers.
"Who do you think you are? Waltzing in here with your talks, when you're doing the same thing as I am–"
"I don't kill–"
"Same - fucking - shit! Just because you don't kill doesn't make you better than me."
Your words were punctuated with each swipe of your weapon, which he easily dodged. You were blinded with rage, with a wave of anger so potent that you could only release it when your blade had sunk into his flesh. You knew deep down if you stopped, your weaker emotions would get the better of you. Your fury consumed you whole, fueling every step as you advanced toward the infuriating figure that seemed to have so much trust in you.
"Stop it! I know you have it in you to stop. I know it feels good to get revenge, but it will ruin you."
Matt only dodged your blows and not once fought back. It only fueled your boiling rampage.
"Shut up! Just … shut up and fight back!"
It was harder to ignore his voice and what he said now. His words were like vines, slipping through the cracks of your control, taking root quickly. But you were broken; no one could mend you. You had long accepted that you would never be someone you once wished to be. This was your life. Full of rage, violence and loneliness. That was how you would die. Your demons would always follow you, then, now, and when it was your time to depart this world. You were beyond saving.
The quiet click of a gun made you whip your head toward the sound. You couldn't see clearly through the veil of tears that had started trailing down your cheeks. That was when you realized that you had been crying. It was such an appalling recognition that you didn't register the bullet leaving its chamber. Everything that happened after that was so fast your mind couldn't catch up. You could only feel. You felt the rough contact of his body against yours when he tackled you, the hard marble floor on your back when you crashed. Matt continued to shield you with his body over yours as a few more shots rang out. He cried out suddenly as a bullet hit him; his body jolted but didn't move an inch. You tried to push him off you so the two of you could run for cover, but he wouldn't budge. Suddenly, it became eerily quiet except for some empty clicks, followed by a sharp cry of pain as Imani got up and took off toward the exit. You pushed Matt off, getting yourself ready to run after her, but you ceased acting on your instinct. Matt tried to rise with one hand braced on the littered floor, his lips parted to expel a pained groan. Your foggy mind replayed the feeling of him lunging for you, saving you from the bullets' line. You blinked, watching as your whole body trembled, the bloody blade unsteady in your hand. Your target had escaped, but that was the least of your concern right now. You looked to your saviour, fixed on the ghastly look on his almost unmasked face. His eyes stared straight ahead, his mouth opened agape, and his movements shaky before he dropped to the floor with a sickening thud.
Matt woke to the unfamiliar surrounding, with strange air and the companion of another's presence. He found himself almost naked, saved for his boxers, nestled between the warm sheets that definitely weren't the silk he used to. Despite its roughness, it was just as nice as his own, as it possessed your scent, earthy and soothing. Matt had grown to like it. A pleasant mix of you and his own blood, which he could sense as he moved to set his feet on the floor. Matt ran a hand through his face, rubbing the sleep from his eyes, and felt no resistance. He seemed to only recognize the missing safety of his mask now, and for a brief moment, he panicked. It was soon washed away when the gentle breeze carried something else in from the open window. A scent of moss, morning dews, and vines seemed to attach themselves to the brick exterior of the building, like soil after the rain. It reminded him of how you always blended in with your environment. And the thought eased his concerns. If you wanted him dead, he wouldn't be alive right now. But Matt was here, in your home. Hurt but alive, the rough gauze on his thigh reminded him.
Matt took a few unsteady steps as he oriented himself, getting familiar with the surroundings. The search for the door was a success, and he opened it to step into a different world. A different feel. The space was warm and pleasant, with sunlight coming from the right side, and the aroma that hung in the air felt homey. Upon further inspection, Matt could smell freshly chopped parsley, rice, and chicken. In the midst of everything were you and your ever-steady heartbeat.
Without turning around, you directed him.
"Take a seat. Food is almost ready."
As soon as the words left your mouth, you bit onto your bottom lip, feeling a little out of place. There was something strangely domestic about the way you told him to make himself comfortable. Even though you did try to kill him just a few hours before.
Matt searched for the seating and sat down, his back resting nicely against the cushion. He closed his eyes, soaking in the warm sun. You let yourself look at him from where you were standing, taking in how peaceful he seemed. How at ease. He seemed different, yet still the same as the person who had followed you, matching your violence with his own just to urge you to turn the other way. Realizing that you had been staring at him for perhaps too long, you whirled around to tend to the steaming food. With the porridge done, you turned the stove off before pouring a good portion of the hot dish into two bowls and sprinkling some parsley on top.
You put the bowl in front of him with a soft thump, and his eyes lazily slid open. The spoon made a small clang on the wooden table as you set it down on his right before going to your seat. Matt picked up the spoon, taking in the dish before him. It was steaming hot with a savoury aroma of rice, chicken, herb and seasonings.
"I didn't poison it, don't worry."
Matt huffed a soft chuckle.
"I trust you."
"You're way too trusting considering what you do."
That made him smile. Matt took a spoonful of the food, blowing it for good measure before giving it a taste. A pleasant and hot feeling engulfed his tongue before it smoothly chased down his throat. The taste was delectable, flavourful and wholesome. It warmed him inside out.
"Seasonings are on your right. Just reach your hand out a little."
That made Matt pause for a moment, but he didn't say anything. You continued your meal in silence, and the air between didn't feel tense or forced. Outside of the enclosed space, New York was a bustle of sounds.
Your spoon made a small clang on the side of the bowl, and it seemed like you decided it was more than enough to start a new conversation.
"I'm guessing from the way you are not panicking or overwhelmed or freaking out, you've been blind for a long time?"
No beating around the bush. He liked that. People walked on eggshells around him, around his disadvantage, for a good reason. But Matt didn't need coddling. He definitely didn't need protecting, either.
"Since I was nine. Freak accident."
"Freaky indeed."
Those two words marked the end of your conversation. Matt occasionally felt your intense gaze, watching him carefully as he cleaned the bowl. Once his and your hunger were satiated, you put the dishes away in the empty sink. Matt stood up to help, but his good intention was quickly forgotten as he hissed lowly in pain. He touched the area around the wound, feeling its mouth crack, allowing the blood to seep into the gauze. Matt winced, and it didn't escape your watchful eyes.
Rummaging around your kitchen, you poured him a glass of water and set two pills in his palm.
"Take these. Or don't. I don't care."
Your halfhearted concern warmed his heart. He knew your intention behind it, and the little spike in your heart never lied. Matt took the pills as you walked away, fetching the medical kit.
"Can I see your wound?"
He nodded after a brief moment. You dragged your chair to settle beside him, and your thighs exchanged accidental brushes. Your touch was careful and tender as your hands worked on his broad thigh to unwrap the bloodied bandage. Matt's jaw clenched, holding back a pained groan as you pressed gently around the tender area. You cleaned up the blood with a clean cloth, precise and swiftly. Not a word passed between you as you secured the wound with a sterile bandage until you asked if you could see the injury on his side. There was something serene, tender and peaceful about the way you took care of him, as if you had done this many, many times before. As if you had known each other for a lifetime.
Once finished, you pulled away with a gentle squeeze on his knee before working on your injured hands. You sighed in exasperation as you undid the hand wraps. The torn skin on your knuckles was red and angry, staring back at you as they throbbed a warning melody, giving you no choice but to listen. You would have to take it easy for the time being.
Lost in your thoughts, your hands pulled on another roll of gauze when Matt's warm hand on your wrist startled you, sending a pleasant prickle to your skin. Your eyes widened as Matt extended an open palm, wordlessly offering to help you dress your wound. You stared at him, your eyes flicked at the upward motion of his brow. Tentatively, you passed the white fabric to him. Matt held you in his hands and quickly assessed your knuckles. Your hands were colder than his, calloused and scarred, like a written memoir of your past that you carried all the time. He tried not to think about the smaller, barely-there scars you probably obtained from your younger years. You were older now, yet, your fight hadn't ended. The path you walked on only led you further into the woods like a prisoner who still fought even though their chains were broken, their prison door unlocked. He wanted to focus on the now, where you were safe, alive and with him.
Judging by the echo of your apartment, it was spacious, cozy and most likely expensive. It was a bold move, living in the heart of Manhattan. You were almost fearless, that much he knew. Matt had no doubt that you knew what you were doing, considering your profession. Maybe your name on the lease was fake, or someone owed you a favour. A very big one.
"How do you afford this apartment?"
Matt kept his voice light, distracting you from the sting of disinfectant.
"How do you?"
You asked him with just as much airiness, if not more. He chuckled softly, shaking his head as you found yourself smiling with him. You continued as the crinkles around his eyes deepened in amusement, remembering that you probably knew where he lived.
"I kill for a living. Sometimes. I'm pretty good at my job, remember?"
Matt took a deep and sharp breath, and you bit your tongue. It was too much, and you felt stupid for making that joke.
"I only take on jobs that target the Stromwyn. Nothing beyond that. Anyone with mutual interest benefits me."
"I know."
"Do you now, smartass?"
Matt could hear a slight smirk in your voice. It was refreshing to see you so relaxed, so … different from what he had known of you. But then, you were full of surprises. Silence fell over you like a thin veil; the only sound left was his movements, wrapping the bandage around your hand.
"Don't you get tired of it?"
The strokes of his hands were soft, certain as he wrapped himself around you. His warmth spread to your hands, making you shiver. Just slightly. You took a long moment to yourself, mulling over what he said.
"I do. But I can't stop. They're still doing it to children, to little kids like … like I once was. I'm a result of them, and I won't be the last."
His grip on your hands tightened, careful of your injuries. Matt brought your intertwined fingers closer to his chest, urging you to look into his unsighted eyes. Upon the near distance, you noticed the hazel gleaming in the bright light of your kitchen, holding more than just your attention.
"What they did to you is not who you are. They don't get to make you into someone you don't want to be."
His words were kind, his touch was soft, and they suffocated you. You jerked your hands out of his as if his touch burned you. A reflection of hurt took shape on his furrowed brows and curved lips, and you felt sorry for pulling away. When did you turn so soft for a man you barely knew?
"My firm can bring attention to their organization. With a big case like this, it can't stay under wraps forever. I have connections, and I can assure you that there will be people looking into this. We can work together. I can help you. Let me. Please."
You swallowed hard, feeling queasy in your seat. You stood up, and Matt followed, but he gave you space when you started pacing. You had known for a long time that you wouldn't be able to do this by yourself. The Stromwyns' influence ran deep. It would take more than an assassin with a want for vengeance infused in her blood to uproot that. To completely dismantle their organization, you would need a miracle. And Matt just might be that miracle you need. You sighed heavily, bringing your nervous pacing to a stop. You held his unseeing gaze, more for your sake than his, as if to seal your fate.
"Fine."
Matt offered a hand to you, initiating a physical agreement. After a brief moment of fleeting contemplation, you held his offering hand and shook. He pulled you closer to him by your skin-on-skin attachment, making you take a sharp breath as the sudden movement grazed your wounded skin.
"No killing."
You tugged on his firm clasp, and he wouldn't let go.
"Fine. No killing."
Matt only released you then, and you were all too eager not to have his hands on you again. That was what you told yourself, even though your heart thrashed unhappily at the traitorous thought. The tingling feeling on your fingers was back, and your mind raced with the possibilities of an uncertain future and foreign feelings.
Matt delivered on his promise. It was a long fight, stretched over two years, but the outcome was victorious and sweet. Nelson, Murdock and Page investigated and gathered evidence with witnesses, bringing the case to New York's district attorney. The ordeal was blown up, which brought in law enforcement from the higher-up. The news of the Stromwyns controlling important assets throughout New York, infesting neighbourhoods with gangs and criminals to secretly collect "protection money" from the residents, was brought to the media, pulling the attention of the whole country. When things began to come to light, the Stromwyns issued a bomb threat in an attempt to bury the whispers. It backfired as the warning was proven real by you and Matt on your investigation at night. The FBI quickly acted on the lead, making arrests for the whole family. The Stromwyns were forced to liquify their assets, and their accounts in foreign countries were seized and frozen by the CIA. Unfortunately, before law enforcement could put all of them in cuffs, some members of the family had already fled to Europe, according to the intel you obtained illegally.
It amazed you how a team of three managed to make such an impact, how relentlessly and tirelessly they worked to get people involved. You were also a part of that team; Matt told you no matter how hard you denied it. He introduced you to his friends and partners, Foggy and Karen. Even though they were skeptical of your relationship with Matt, they took your intel seriously and worked with you. You kept your distance, knowing they weren't comfortable being in the same room with an experienced assassin as in Matt's past, and you were fine with that. You had a working association with them, striving for the same outcome. You weren't there to make friends.
You weren't sure what to make of your relationship with Matt. Something had changed, but you didn't want to acknowledge it. You couldn't. It wouldn't be fair to him when you had to leave eventually. You had each other's back when you scouted for new information, when you infiltrated the Stromwyn's warehouses. Those fights didn't often result in grave injuries; when they did, you took care of each other. Small and big damages. Matt ensured that you looked after yourself and wouldn't agonize over your past. He was there to soothe you in his secure embrace when you had a nightmare. It was almost as if his arms and hands had morphed around your frame, embracing you, making you feel at ease when your grief was too much. You would wake up thrashing in his arms when the needles were too close; the stiffness paralyzing your body felt too real. Eventually, your place or his wasn't a matter since you would always end up in the same bed at the end of everything, whether due to exhaustion or nightmare-filled nights into early mornings. Whenever you woke with a headache, he would have his special tea readied, along with medicine at your request. You were afraid that he would spoil you rotten, and if you got used to his affection and care, you would never be able to leave. You couldn't stay, couldn't allow yourself that one thing. You had shared too much of yourself with him, and you were afraid you would be left with nothing if you kept on giving. You knew you didn't deserve him. So you packed your stuff up and booked a flight to Germany, following the trail of the scattered Stromwyns. You decided to leave without a word, but Matt had another idea.
"Don't do this to me."
Call you sentimental, but you had come to the rooftop of your building one last time to soak in the sound, the feel, and the air of this city. There was nowhere else quite like it, and the reason wasn't entirely due to the man standing behind you. You didn't have to turn around to know it was Matt. Your apartment was empty now, doused in the warm late afternoon light. Matt stood before you, his dress shirt creased, his tie crooked, his hair ruffled, and his face flushed from exertion. He must have run from his office in Hell's Kitchen to your apartment in Midtown Manhattan. You extended your gratitude to Karen and Foggy in person for helping you with the case before Matt got there, nothing else. You guessed they were suspicious of that and told him, even though you didn't show anything out of place. You wanted to get this over with.
"Do what?"
"Leave. Leave New York. Leave me."
The wounded edge in his plea twisted the knife that was already embedded in your heart.
"I told you. I can't rest when they're still out there."
"Let the authority take care of that. Don't be reckless."
The tone in his last sentence was stern, reprimanding as if you were a child out of line.
"Me? Reckless?"
You turned to face him, appalled at his audacity.
"I followed your 'no killing' rule. These bastards are still free because of it."
Your hands helped enunciate each word you threw at him, even though it was fruitless. You were making a point for yourself. An excuse to leave.
"They can't run forever. You've done your part. You've suffered enough."
Matt erased the distance between you, getting close enough that you didn't want to step back. You would miss his warmth.
"Stay. You have friends here."
His tender intention thrummed on your nerves, coaxing your guard like the sweet honey he always put in your tea. His words were so convincing that you felt like you could be fooled.
"No, I don't. I don't have anyone."
You stubbornly turned your head away, unable to look at him.
"You have me. Foggy and Karen, too. They don't say it but they do care about you. And I do, too."
"You don't mean that."
"Yes, I do."
He said it with so much conviction. You wanted to believe him.
"I can't, Matt. I don't know who I am without this."
The constant running, following, chasing. The continuous shutout from people, shielding yourself until you were isolated and all alone. In a way, your violence, pain, and loneliness were a way for you to punish and protect yourself. That was how you stayed anchored to reality, never strayed too far from your cruel fate, and never looked at what you could have been.
"You're still you. The strongest, most stubborn person I know. Even when you don't know yourself, you'll get there eventually. Stop running and allow yourself a chance to live the life that you deserve. To be who you want to be."
"I'm still a murderer. That's all I am and all I'll ever be. I'm only capable of that, and I will only bring you down with me by merely being in your life."
He shook his head.
"Yes, I will, Matt. Nothing good comes with me. Why don't you just let me go?"
Your throat hurt with the stricken cry that was torn from your chest. Your eyes were wide, watching Matt through the thin veil of your tears.
"I love you."
"What?"
"I love you. Everything about you."
Matt inched even closer, and you let him step into your space, knocking down your crumbling barrier. You weren't strong enough to back away. To run. You were exhausted from it.
"Please …"
You had always been careful, five steps ahead of most things. But not everything. You didn't expect to fall for Matt, yet, you did. This was his desperate plea for you to stay, to live your life instead of hiding in the shadows, being a ghost of who you truly were. He had whittled away your defence wall, brick by brick, over the span of time you knew each other. He taught you there was safety in letting go. And you did.
In a swift and clumsy motion, you slammed your lips against Matt's, accepting his promises, love, and everything in between. His full lips were soft and addictive, parting easily to deepen the kiss. Your tongues tangled in a fiery dance, and you felt like you could get drunk on his taste alone. Like the barest hint of salt, a touch of cinnamon spice, and something else that only belonged to him. His hand tangled in your hair, bringing you closer as if it was possible. When he was finally satisfied with the absence of space in between, his hand trailed down to the column of your throat in a soft caress, before stopping at the coursing, delicate pulse. Matt pressed in with his fingertips, acting on the overwhelming need to feel you, to feel the proof as if your woven bodies and intertwined tongues weren't enough. That you were real, and you were here with him. You only parted when you felt like your body could slip away from your consciousness. You heaved hard, feeling the gasps of air on your lips as Matt touched his forehead to yours. He whispered against your lips.
"Please. Stay with me."
You closed your eyes. You were tired of running, of letting your rage consume you. You and Matt were two flames. Similar to a fault, but he brought balance to you in his own way. He soothed that anger inside you and showed you that there was more to you than your past, the deadly intents you carried in the company of your wrath. You had a chance to start over with a future that wouldn't end in solitude, with the man who had so much trust in your potential when you didn't. At last, you weren't afraid to take it for yourself, as long as Matt was with you. You nodded; your face bore joyous tears and a genuine smile.
"I'm all yours."
