’I pitched a lot of ideas to Oda in our first meeting. One was about how to introduce Zoro in an action based scene to show off what he can do before we meet him in Shells Town. In an old SBS (fan Q&A) Oda mentioned that Zoro was previously recruited by Mr. 7 of Baroque Works and killed him in combat. This was exactly what I was looking for: something within canon while never actually shown in the manga itself. Oda turned to one of his editors and said: “Did I say that?”
The next day I was presented with this drawing. The only time Mr. 7 has been fully drawn by Oda. He said he was impressed by my knowledge of his world and he liked the idea. Holding onto this felt like I was carrying the Holy Grail. The first of many great conversations and interactions with the man himself. Someone I’m honored to call a collaborator and a friend.‘

Now that the writer’s strike has ended, we finally hear from Matt Owens (OPLA show runner & head writer)
I knew Jeff Ward, we had worked together on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. previously; we’ve always had a great working relationship that blossomed into a very close friendship. I was still on S.H.I.E.L.D. when I first started developing One Piece. We went out to dinner one night and I said, Hey, I’m doing this show. Take a look at it because there’s a character that I really want you for.
So Jeff and I have been talking about Buggy the Clown for years. Jeff is such a phenomenal actor, he brings such depth, such playfulness, such thought to everything that he does, and he killed it. It was so fun seeing him embody that character. So I knew that he would hit, I knew that people would really like him. To the extent that they have, to the extent that they have been horny for him, that’s new for me, but I’m glad to see him getting the attention that he deserves as an artist.
OOOOH YAYYYY!!!!
ALL OF THE JEFF LOVE!!! I know Matt was a part of the AOS team during season 5 so they've had that friendship going for a few years now and it's so so so wonderful to hear about how this role came to be for him!!! \O/

TV Shows/Dramas watched in 2023
One Piece (Season 1, 2023, USA/Japan)
Creators: Matt Owens & Steven Maeda (based on the manga by Eiichiro Oda)
Directors: Marc Jobst, Emma Sullivan, Tim Southam & Josef Wladyka
Mini-review:
I'm not gonna lie, although I've been an avid manga/anime fan for years, the sheer size of One Piece felt too daunting, so I never dared to start it. After all this time, this live action adaptation felt like the right (and simple) way to enter this famed world. And I'm so glad I did it. It's engaging, ambitious and, most of all, fun as f**k. It lovingly embraces the campiness that comes with most mangas and animes, and makes the most of it. I do have some qualms about the cinematography and the pace, which feels a bit rushed at times. However, the show makes up for that with its gorgeous productions values and, most importantly, its mindblowingly perfect cast. All the actors are fantastic, and they have great chemistry too, but I'd say the MVP is Iñaki Godoy. He's an absolute superstar. Anyway, I really really enjoyed this, and I feel very tempted to start the manga. Let's hope we get more and more seasons.

Five weeks into its run, Netflix‘s One Piece remains firmly in the streamer’s weekly Top 10, amassing 57.8M views to date. For four of them, which included One Piece‘s quick Season 2 renewal, series writer/executive producer/co-showrunner Matt Owens was on strike with the rest of the WGA.
In his first interview tied to the One Piece launch, Owens speaks about missing the promotional campaign and premiere event for the show as well as not being able to comment on the critical and ratings success of the manga adaptation and its quick renewal.
He reveals that writing for Season 2 has resumed following the end of the WGA strike, with the writers room reopening this week, and gives a progress report on the writing process. Owens also lays out the main theme for Season 2, provides details about how the tag scene at the end of the Season 1 finale sets up the new season and shares additional Season 2 clues for fans of Eiichiro Oda’s best-selling manga that One Piece is based on.

You wanna know how something is a bad idea?
When a completely untrustworthy source posts an alleged leak, a month after being proved to be wrong on another scoop (the Twitter account claimed Detective Pikachu 2 was shelved a month before Legendary greenlit the sequel officially) but because the track record is so poor, everyone reports it as fact.
Tumblr media
As we all know, silence is the same as acknowledgement, so I expect Matt Owens to call this horseshit come Monday or else the trade papers will likely run with it because it’s so easy to believe.
