Listen.....Does anyone else wish Remus had gone and lived with the pack after Sirius was arrested? Like in a "I keep drinking and am sad and this bond with my kind makes it a little better, and I'll stay just a few days oh no it's been years and Dumbledore wants me to teach" kind of way? I still wanted him to go back to Sirius in the end but I really wanted him to be with the pack too. Anyone else? At all? Am I alone?

Sweet tea in the summer
Cross my heart, won't tell no other
And though I can't recall your face
I still got love for you

Word Count: 7.5k
Content: Fluff & Angst
Summary: Unbeknownst to her, the Marauders have made a bet on who can get y/n to accept a date first. As they get to know her though, the lines between the friendly competition and honest feelings begin to blur.
Part I / Part II
______________________________________________________________
Fourty Days Prior (The First Day After Easter Break)
Sirius held tight to his tie, not having the time or desire to put it on when other, more time sensitive things were happening. He cursed himself for oversleeping. The pounding of his feet on the hard stone floor echoed the pounding of his heart. All his good intentions: heading to bed early, getting up early, and being in class before everyone else - all had been sacrificed in one foul swoop. He'd be berrating himself, likely looking lackidasical when it came to the course. Sirius had spent so much time convincing and working to avoid that perception. If he shattered it in one measly morning, he'd be set back months. He really didn't want to see disappointment in that set of lovely, distracting eyes.
Just as he rushed through the doors, the bell rang. At least he wasn't late. He dropped into his desk, hoping to hide his panting and his pounding heart. Sitting in the center of the desk, were two glass bottles. Condensation dripped down each of them. One was already opened. His gaze drifted over to his deskmate. She sat neat and pristine, eyes not so discreetly flickering over to him.
"What's this?"
The girl smiled, looking down at the blank roll of parchment she'd set out for notes. Sirius spoiled himself with the sight, not taking his eyes off her for a moment.
"Well, I thought I was going to get both to myself for a minute there," She teased. She loved not answering his questions. He knew it. It always caused the corner of her mouth to twitch with a smirk. Sirius knew she wouldn't be telling him, he'd have to figure it out himself.
"So, this is for me then?"
"Maybe."
"Now why would you bring me a drink? D'ya want something from me?"
Holding the cold glass in his hand, fond memories from the beginning of the year made him chuckle in recognition. That had been the day he'd finally gotten the girl's attention. Not like he hadn't been at it for years. She was particularly stubborn, but his need for help in class had given him the perfect excuse to request her time - she was too sweet to say no. And she'd flirted with him. Dangled the tantilizing possibility she might one day like him as if it was nothing.
"Y'know, not everyone has to bribe people to get what they want," She chuckled.
Padfoot was lost now. When she looked at him again, she had the cute face she made when she was about to give in and tell him something - her nose scrunched up and her eyes sparkled with mischeif.
"Maybe I didn't want to drink alone. Or maybe I thought McGonagall would be less likely to fuss at you for sneaking snacks?" She offered. As if hearing her, McGonagall entered the classroom and shot the two a stern look.
"Mister Black, please do not brink drinks to class tomorrow. You know the rules."
The girl next to Sirius choked back a laugh. The professor began the lecture, speaking loud over quill scratches and the flipping of book pages.
Sirius himself was taking notes when his bottle, now opened, was nudged over toward his hand. His fingers ran up along it as he turned to look at the girl.
"Maybe I just missed you."
Sirius watched as soft lips took a sip of the drink. She turned to look at him, the tiniest hint of flushed color on the apples of her cheeks. The boy was sure he could look at her forever, heart threatening to burst out of his chest.
Y/n held out her bottle. With a bright smile, Sirius tapped his to her's with a satisfying clink.
***
"You're really not joking."
The laughter died down. In its place was the soft, wilting expression of disbelief and disappointment. Rosy velvet cheeks had lost their color, eyes were glassy, and the disposition that was usually warm and sunny turned to a hopless winter before James' eyes. She wasn't his romantic ideal, but even he had to admit that the change was painful to watch.
"I wish I was. It's all my fault really. I was being arrogant and selfish and self-centered. Even worse, I assumed you'd be up for the game. But when I saw you with Peter, and then with Remus, and then Sirius, I... I realized we were just going to hurt your feelings. We're all prats. I'm very sorry."
***
Yesterday
Peter had a pastry for you. He'd taken to bringing you one for the past few weeks. Originally it had been a ploy to earn your affections, it seemed that when Sirius had started spending time with you that his friends had taken a special interest as well. You didn't mind. It had been nice to become friends with the boys from your year. You'd known them for years, but other than Sirius' neverending teasing, you hadn't gotten my time with them. You assumed that was due to whatever sneaky exploits they always seemed up to.
Peter was asking questions. That was something you could always expect. He seemed to be a glutton for information. Though, you weren't sure what he did with all of it.
"You're seein' Sirius later, right?"
"Yes. But I assume you already knew that Pete," You shook your head. A bright smile was plastered all over your face. You couldn't help it.
"When're you gonna give up this charade? Tell him you like him-"
"Absolutely not! I get that you enjoy living vicariously through people, but I'm no guinea pig. And even... even if I did have feelings for Sirius... it wouldn't change the fact that I'm just his tutor."
"Y/n..."
"Speaking of, we're about to be late for class." You changed the subject. You often found yourself saying too much around Peter, forgetting his connections made him much more powerful than he appeared. He didn't argue. He just had a knowing look on his face.
After lunch you didn't get a moment to yourself. This time, you found yourself with a particularly calm walking partner. Remus was describing his new book. The sun was lemony and bright. Birds twittered happily. The day had turned into one of those blue-sky daydreams. The day a fairytale would come to its conclusion.
"The character is quite the scallywag. Think you'd like him quite a bit," Remus offered.
"What are you on about Lupin?"
"You're quite drawn to the sarcastic, flirty, pirate types."
That made you snort. You laughter was a surprise to you. It was enough to cause you to nearly trip, the tall boy gripping your elbow to keep you from falling.
"What makes you think I want a pirate, Remus? D'you not think I'd prefer a cozy house husband?" You teased. It was always fun to make Remus Lupin squirm. He had no skill for flirting. Part of you wished you did have feelings for the sweet boy holding you up. It'd be easier than the alternative.
For once, Remus didn't seemed phased. He actually seemed amused. He steadied you and slung an arm around your shoulder. He was laughing at you. Full blown, unabashedly laughing.
"What?"
"It's just funny. You and I both know you'd be bored with anyone who wasn't as adventurous as you. You're in search of someone who'll bother you and treasure you and take you on adventures. That's a pirate deary. Can you imagine coming home to a nice boy like me?"
Now he was teasing you. You laughed.
"I wouldn't hate it. You'd be a great roommate. But never a sexy roommate. It's truly a shame we're not compatible." You shook your head with a chuckle.
"So, you are in the market for a pirate?"
"Remus!" You whined.
"Just saying. There's always Si-"
"Oh you and Pete are gonna be the death of me." You sighed. Your eyes drifted up to the boy next to you. He had that same knowing look as Peter. "Remus?"
"Yes?"
You felt nervous. Your fingers trembled and the next words out of your mouth were honest and shaky. "Is this going to blow up in my face?"
"Can't say."
"You really are gonna kill me, Remus Lupin."
Night was almost upon you, the fire in the fireplace burning a bit brighter to offset the darkening windows. You fiddled with the hem of your sweater as you waited for Sirius. He'd asked to talk before exams began. The note requesting this meeting sat in your lap, creases pressed out from reading and re-reading. Sirius' flowing script was lovely to look at, giving you a bit of relief.
"You're a sight for sore eyes."
A small giggle escaped your lips, "Is that so?"
Sirius took a seat beside you, head thrown back and a sigh revealing more stress than you expected.
"Hey, are you okay?"
The boy dropped his cheek onto the couch cushion and set his sparkling eyes on you. He was quiet. A small smile curled on his lips, your heart melting at the sight. You smiled back, still waiting on a response.
"Right now? Never better."
Your smile grew, more giggles spilling out of you. "Alright. So-"
"I didn't see you in Divination today."
"The professor actually told me that I couldn't come. That it was important that I wasn't there. Said I'd jinx the predictions or something," You huffed. It wasn't that you didn't want time off from class, but it didn't feel great to be kicked out. Let alone told that your entire presence would ruin it for everyone else.
Sirius pinched at your cheek, earning an eyeroll. "Awww poor pretty thing. Got a free pass out of class and you're so sad!"
"Shut up."
"Well, we did very interesting work. Cartomancy."
"Don't tell me, you got to do a card trick for a pretty girl and now you've got a date this weekend?" Your eyes shifted over toward the fire. It was an assumption, but not that large of one when it came to the charming boy beside you. On more than one occasion he'd 'seen' romance coming into a classmate's life and been seen snogging them later on.
"Not exactly. Though, we did focus our divination on romance. Finding out what was in store for us." Sirius's voice had an upturn in pitch. When you looked back at him, he was sitting ramrod straight with his eyebrows raised, appraising your reactions.
"You mean, you didn't try and score a date with some fancy manuvering?"
"No. In fact, I worked with Remus. Poor bloke's got more than a few years before he's shacked up." Sirius explained.
As much as you hated it, your curiosity got the better of you. "And what did the cards have in store for Notorious Playboy Sirius Black?"
Sirius was quiet. He was tapping his hands alongside his trousers. Dark hair obscured his face as he leaned forward to think. You hadn't meant to stump him. You started to say his name, the sound barely above a whisper, when he looked up at you. He'd done it again. The last time he'd given you that honest look, you'd given up every defense you'd had against his charms. You'd fallen into a secret devotion, foolishly holding onto an impossible hope that your friend Sirius was seeing you as more than a friend. His grey eyes shone, glittery in the firelight.
"I could read yours? Since you missed class?" He broke the silence. You released a breath. You hadn't realized you'd been holding one. With a simple nod, the boy reached into his robes and pulled out a deck of cards. "We were to think of three questions. Is there a partner for me? How long until I meet this person? How will I know who it is?"
You nodded. No matter how hard you tried to stay calm, you couldn't help but worry that this moment would prove you had no chance with Sirius Black. "Alright. And you swear not to make fun of this absolutely dismal reading I'm about to have?"
"Never. Now shuffle."
The two of you had never been more silent. The ruffle of the cards was so loud. You handed back the deck and watched as he spread it out between you. Giving into the dramatics, you closed your eyes and ran a finger along the backs, pausing to pick the three cards. Sirius pulled them out, gathering up the deck and handing it back to you.
"Ah yes... I can see it now," Sirius feigned a seer's mystic physicality. You bit your lip, holding back a laugh. He flipped the first card. He looked up at you, a strange twitch in his brow.
"Is it that bad?"
"No, no. It's the star. Not only is there a partner for you... it seems that it's who you hope for. Does little y/n have a crush?" Sirius covered his initial bit of fluster with a sing-song tease.
You rolled your eyes. It was difficult to keep your heart from pounding. The dots immediately connected for you: Sirius was named after a star... and though you knew you shouldn't, you held a foolish hope he'd care for you in more than a friendly way. You brushed aside the question, suddenly invested in the divination casting. "C'mon. Next one."
Sirius looked at you for a moment before taking a deep breath and flipping over the next card. The Ace of Wands. Well, that at least secured that your percieved partner was a wizard, that you'd likely met them at school.
"What does the Ace of Wands mean?" You probed, a bit concerned at Sirius' silence.
Sirius took a deep breath. He seemed guarded. Maybe it was really bad to pull this card - you didn't know, you'd not gotten that far in the Divination text yet. Uncomfortable snickers built in your chest and your shaky hands waved around.
"Maybe this was a bad idea. We, we can stop if-"
"Friends. You're already friends with this person. The ace of wands is the romance that begins as a friendship and turns into something more," Sirius had the most sincere tone. He didn't take his eyes off of you. It was hotter under his gaze than standing by the fire. Muscles pulled tight in your chest, constricting your breathing and forcing you to decide between being quiet or trying to speak and hyperventilating. Luckily, Sirius continued, "Your friendship started new, and continued to surprise you. It wasn't stagnant, but interesting and exciting every time it continued to develop. And it grew a hope within you that something more could be there..."
Sirius had shifted really close, eyes scanning for your reaction to his words. His dark eyebrows were pinched together, his tongue peeking out before he bit down on his lower lip. Sirius was nervous. It made you even moreso. You could see defined lashes against his skin. A curl trembled, having fallen just to the side of his right eye. It was quiet again.
"You know... you really are pretty y/n," The boy whispered. Your breath hitched.
"Sirius?"
"Yes?"
All confidence you may have held had gone by the way side. Such a tender and wanting sound, just three letters long, coming from the boy ahead of you left you floundering. Your mind grabbed a hold of the only thing to turn the heat of the moment off of you. "W-what did your cards say Sirius?"
"Queen of Wands... and the ace of wands... so she's a friend who is firey and outgoing," His words came out smooth despite the terrified look he gave you.
"And how will you know who they are?"
Your words were airy, barely making their way across the tiny expanse between the two of you. His hand was on yours, tracing small patterns on your goose-pimpled skin. His silvery eyes flicked across your face. He'd decided something, inching closer to you. Blood thundered through your veins and yet you were frozen still.
"Y/n... could I-"
"There you are!"
James burst into the common room, scaring you half to death and causing a card to drop off the top of the deck. Sirius pulled away from you, holding himself taut. If you'd been able to calmly register the situation, you would've seen disapointment and anger written all over his face.
"I've just thought of the perfect prank! You wouldn't believe- are you doing homework?" James nodded to the cards in front of you. The three of you took a moment to look down at them. The Three of Swords sat face up on top of your last, unrevealed card. The art was quite unpleasant, three blades stabbing through a heart.
"A-actually, I was about to go- to go to bed," You offered a fake yawn and avoided the eyes of the boys around you.
A half-hearted goodnight was all you could muster, thoughts of Sirius' face hovering in front of your own clouding your mind. You could still feel the soft brush of the boy's fingers over your hand, your heart racing at every thought of him. You could've cared less about the cards. All that was worth contemplating was Sirius and the interrupted question. Could he what?
***
"It's okay. I get it. Thank you... for telling me."
"I really am sorry. Is there anything I can-"
"Win."
James was lost. Still, held just behind her placid features, was a deep sadness. A slight tremble of the fingers, a hitch her words. Her tone was insistent, intimidating, but her actions revealed the shakiness that the false confidence was built upon.
"What?"
"Ask me out. I'll say yes. You deserve to win for being man enough to realize and own up to your mistake," Y/n sighed.
James wasn't sure what to say. It didn't make him feel any better to be winning a stupid bet that he'd initiated. He wanted to decline, to just force the rest of the marauders to apologize and leave the girl alone. That is what he'd assumed she wanted. Before he could voice his opinion, she spoke once more.
"And paying for anything I want may just bribe my full forgiveness."
His hand reached up and scratched at dark curls; James was openly confused about the olive branch she was handing out. He was flabbergasted. "You do realize this whole situation was my fault? My idea?"
"Yes, but the rest agreed. And you've been honest with me." The girl offered a weak smile. "Not to mention you'll be earning my forgiveness with gifts."
James couldn't help but let out a hardy laugh. He truly understood why their silly little competition had gone on so long - y/n was great. She was clever, witty, annoyingly skilled and knew it, and she fought back tooth and nail. Y/n was exceedingly passionate and caring, which made her easy to care for. And they all did. In their own ways, each boy cared about her so much.
"I think I can handle that."
***
One month prior
Sirius was sweating, huffing and puffing for breath, but still he smiled. He chuckled at the boys next to him, all in various states of duress. None of them seemed particularly displeased at the situation. However, by James' irritated swipe at his glasses, it was clear that getting their arses handed to them was well-liked only by Sirius. He couldn't help it. The shining smile from the other side of the courtyard was more than enough payment for getting stunned.
"Come on! Don't be pansies about it now. You asked me to help. S'not my fault you're too chicken to hit me," Y/n yelled. She held her arms out, spinning in a circle. Her hair and skirt floated around her. Sirius swore she matched those cheesy scenes from a movie. The light his her just so, streaming through the trees and causing him to not be able to look away.
"You think we aren't trying?" Remus asked, an incredelous tone edging his words.
"I was giving you the benefit of the doubt," She quipped back. "Y'know, Gryffindor boys just being chivalrous and all."
That smile was gonna kill him. Remus laughed. That was good. Sirius had suspected they'd get along first. The dominoes would settle into place: y/n would become friends with Remus too, which would ease James and Peter into the idea of her being around more often. And hopefully, they'd talk him up and one day y/n would fancy him as well. It really was one of his better plans.
"Stupefy!"
"Protego!"
All the sudden James was up and firing spells left and right. The two went back and forth with a lot of near misses. Sirius nearly went slackjawed looking at the fire that lit up her eyes.
"Rictusempra!"
Y/n fell to the ground in howling laughter. The three boys ran to her side, checking to make sure she wasn't hurt. To their surprise, she had just enough faculty to yank James down next to her, landing him flat on his arse. Now they were both laughing. The spell had worn off. Sirius wasn't the biggest fan of how long they kept going.
A few hours later, they'd moved on from dueling and into conversation. Peter had droned on for so long about chess, but y/n had been quite sweet when listening. Sirius had to fight audible sighs at her sincere engagement. He also couldn't help but tease because he knew she was absolute shit at the game. At dinner y/n and Remus got locked into a debate about some history assignment. Listening to her laugh so frequent around his friends, Sirius couldn't help but feel a bit flustered. He'd intended her to be friends with them, but not this friendly. Sirius began sulking without realizing it. James and y/n were discussing quidditch when they got to the common room.
"This was really quite fun. Thank you all." Y/n stopped and turned to look at them from the staircase. The three boys next to Sirius all agreed, thanking her for joining them, inviting her around again if she wanted. Had Sirius not been so annoyed he would have noticed her eyes flitting over to guage his reaction over and over. He would have noticed the tiniest amount of pink that rose over her cheekbones as she addressed him.
"You still free to study tomorrow night, Sirius?"
All he did was nod, sending her off with a half-hearted smile. The group stood awkwardly, no one moving towards the dorm or to relax. Four sets of legs seemed to be bouncing with anticipation, waiting for someone to do or say something first.
"Alright, I'll say it. Pads, y/n is brilliant!" James cackled.
Remus and Peter joined in. It seemed everyone was quite taken with the girl. She complemented them all in different ways. Sirius feared she fit better with his friends than himself.
"You alright mate? Or does the cute girl got your tongue?" Peter teased.
"I'm fine," He barked back.
Remus and James shared a look. Whatever they were thinking, Sirius already didn't like it. Remus spoke up, "Honestly, if you don't ask her out Padfoot, I just might."
That was more than enough for Sirius to fly off the handle. "What makes you think I want to do that? Bloody hell. Do whatever ya like Moony. S'not like I don't have plenty of options!"
"You'll have some competition Moons. I'm thinking maybe I've waited long enough for Evans to notice me. Why not see if y/n is a better fit?" James joined in.
"She might want to go out with me. I'm a right better romantic partner than you lot!" Peter added.
Sirius thought he was going to explode.
"Sure you're not interested Pads?" James said in a sing-song voice. It put Sirius' teeth on edge. How had his friends gone from supportive to competition in one afternoon?
"Not a single one of you has my charm. Go ahead and try. I can't wait to laugh at your failures!" He boasted. It was false confidence, mainly arrogance, and a bit of insecurity talking.
James jumped up on one of the sofas, excitedly declaring, "That settles it! Gentleman, I would like to make a wager. First man to score a date with the lovely y/n y/l/n gets to pick the failure prize for the other three! Because, let's be real, getting a date with her is prize enough for the winner. Agreed?"
Remus and Peter looked a bit concerned. Sirius didn't notice. He was too busy seeing red. As much as he loved James as a brother, he couldn't stand this attitude when it was pointed towards y/n.
"Agreed." Sirius growled.
***
"At least it makes sense now," A chuckle left her lips, desperate to be happy but ultimately revealing a choked up nature. She muttered to herself, slurring her words as if it would keep the boy in front of her from understanding, "Should have known... s'no way Sirius Black would actually give me the time of day."
James immediately felt sick to his stomach. He was close to losing his lunch all over the floor. Y/n had fallen for Sirius. Worse, she thought Pads only saw her as a bet when in reality, the bet had been created because of Sirius' feelings for her. The whole thing was so convoluted that it nearly confused James - and it had been his idea.
"Sorry, what?"

Two weeks prior
Warm breezes swept across the grounds, hinting at the coming summer heat. The sun sat low in the sky despite the late hour. Golden and orange light splayed out over the lake and hills. Dinner was long past. Books laid closed, long forgotten in favor of indulging the senses; eyes took in the glorious views, mouths tasted secrets and stories divulged, bodies felt the heat of proximity with just enough space between, and ears heard the brilliant excitement and bubbling laughter and barely noticable sighs of contentment.
Sirius was telling you a story. It was clear he was embellishing as he went along, but you didn't mind. You found his sense of adventure entrancing. He'd get so caught up, giving flagrant and ornamental descriptions to tiny things, wordsmithing without realizing it. No one told a story like Sirius Black. And you hoped, foolishly and selfishly, that no one recieved stories from him like you did.
"You should write these down. Or record them. Not that you'd need the money, but you'd make a fortune. I could listen to you all day." The interjection was much more revealing than you'd ever have allowed yourself to be with him, or any other boy for that matter.
His dark hair fell in his face as he turned to look down at you. A shocked but pleased expression studied your face. Something tugged in your chest, begging you to keep looking. You wondered what you were waiting for.
And then he smiled. There it was.
"I thought you couldn't wait for me to shut up?" He teased.
"Maybe you've grown on me Black," The words slipped from your lips with an unbidden sigh.
"Is that so?"
This time the smile spread across your face, pleased with his teasing instead of irritated. You weren't sure when the change had occurred. Somewhere along the way, the months of studying and working had smoothed the rough edges between you.
"Keep talking before I change my mind."
"Well, I actually do have something to tell you." The boy seemed shy all the sudden. You pulled up to your elbows, shamelessly admiring the change. The secret pride you held at being privvy to some of his more hidden emotions set your chest on fire.
The excitement burbled out of you like a fountain, "Well go on!"
"I got a perfect score on McGonagall's exam. She says I'm on my way to an O, if I keep on the way I have."
"Sirius!" You exclaimed. You were up and practically on top of him, arms wrapped around his neck and holding on tightly. It was success, pure success you were reveling in. The start of the year he'd been in danger of failing. It seemed he had been learning a thing or two working with you.
His chuckles were bouncing against your chest. And he seemed tentative as he hugged you back. "What's this for?"
You pulled away, holding him at arms length and beaming at him. He had the cutest surprised expression.
"An O! Sirius! I'm so proud of you. I knew if you put that big head of yours to good use that you'd...
...w-why are you looking at me like that?"
You felt hot under his gaze. The sudden awareness of his hands still around your waist, your hands on either side of his collar, made you nervous. Sirius Black had never made you nervous before.
"Because you're looking at me like that," Sirius smiled, a soft blush warming his features. "You're proud of me?"
The heat in your chest only grew. You could feel yourself close to shivering with the realization.
"Yes, I am Sirius."
Your words were hushed, soft as the descending nightfall; soft as the voice in your head that kept repeating: 'And I think I may be in love with you, too.'
***
"It's nothing." Y/n lied. Another weak smile was all it took to cement James' suspicions. "Don't worry about it."
Nerves sent the boy's eyes darting behind his glasses; Up and down and across the hall they searched for something to solve his mistake. Coming around the corner were the other three marauders. Sirius had flowers in his hand. Everything was colluding to make sure James Potter learned his lesson about making a game of other people's feelings. Remus and Peter were giving supportive smiles and pats on the back. On their own, just as James had, it seemed they'd stopped the bet for the sake of someone's feelings.
***
Five days prior
Sirius was tossing a quaffle up at the ceiling of his bed. The soft thump as the leather ball dropped into his hand gave him something steady to focus on. He ignored the aching pit in his stomach. For three weeks he'd watched as his time with y/n was stolen. Their usually study sessions grew crowded at the top of the hour, one of Sirius' friends often dropping her off from whatever activity or class they'd just been at. She always shooed them off, an act he relished in. But he couldn't help but let his thoughts linger on what was going on. A few times he'd been tempted to ask. She always said that she'd tell him after they finished studying. That never seemed to happen. Y/n always wanted to talk about things other than his friends, always probed him for a story or asked questions about him. He didn't mind talking to her. However, the unanswered inquiries about James, Peter, and Remus left him anxious and irritated. He put off studying and even began to skip meeting her all together. Like he was doing right now.
"There you are. Been searching the whole castle for you." The door to the dormitory banged against the wall as it opened. "James has the map, so we were left to our own assumptions. Seeing as you stood up y/n this afternoon."
"Just studying. It's not like we set anything." Sirius grumbled. "Sure you guys had fun without me." He couldn't help but sit in his manufactured self-pity. The stupid bet was wrenching him apart.
"Did you hear what Remus said?" Peter snapped in Sirius' face. It was a surprise to everyone. Peter was rarely this forceful.
"I heard him. I skipped my study session."
"No no no. That is not what he said. And seeing as we were asked by y/n to go look for you, I suggest you listen."
Sirius' head whipped over. He stared at the smaller boy, eyes wide with surprise as his friend gave him a stern look. Straightening his back, Sirius gave his focus to the tall boy giving him an evil glare. "Okay."
"She used the words 'he stood me up'. You're a prat for that. I get you're against being vulnerable and admitting to having real feelings for anyone. But this little charade of yours has gotten you into this mess. You'd have a shot if you'd get your head out of your arse!"
"What?"
A tense silence filled the room. The boy's fingers gripped into his bedsheets. Remus words felt confusing, a maze that he kept running circles in. Y/n's words played over and over in his mind. If she'd said it about anyone else he would have beat the guy to a pulp. No one said they got stood up for a study session. Blown off, sure, but not stood up. No... people got stood up for dates. Even if it was a slip of the tongue, that meant she'd at least thought about him in that way. Right?
"I more than care about her," Sirius finally met his friends' gazes.
"Now that wasn't so hard, was it?" A bright smile teased at him. "Since you're all done moping about, maybe we call this whole thing off, hm?"
Sirius let out a defeated huff, "Merlin, Prongs is going to gloat about this forever."
"Not if we don't tell him."
Remus and Sirius looked at one another in shock before turning to Wormtail. There was a sneaky look on the boy's face, one they'd never seen on its own. Usually, Peter got that look when someone else proposed a brilliant prank or plan.
"Think about it!" He continued, "We don't tell him. Remus and I can help you get the nerve up to ask. Talk you up to y/n and lay out the groundwork. You swoop in, ask her out, win the bet, and James is none the wiser."
"Pete... that might be the best plan we've ever come up with."
***
"Yes! I'd love to go to Hogsmeade with you this weekend!"
James was startled by y/n speaking loudly. She was holding his hands. He had absolutely no memory of her taking them.
"What are you doing?" He whispered, suddenly frantic.
She leaned in, eyebrows raised. "I saw your eyes go wide and your face go pale. Either the other boys are here behind me or one of your two actual crushes are. This just solidified your win or made someone very jealous. You're welcome."
Y/n was rather smug for someone who'd been emotionally toyed with for a month. If he'd been paying attention, he would have seen the tears leaking from the corners of her eyes. She didn't even turn around to see if she was correct, just gave him a little wave and scampered off. Remus and Peter glared at him. The bouquet of flowers was scattered across the floor - Sirius nowhere in sight. An eerie quite hung over the corridor.
***
Twelve days prior
"Okay, okay, worst way to learn about sex!" James cackled as he shot off the next prompt of your game. He took a large swig of butterbeer and leaned on the side of the bed.
"The 'talk' but given by literally any professor," Peter snickered.
You bauffed, unable to hold back your snarky reply, "You say that like you all wouldn't get turned on by Minnie! You so would."
"Rightfully so," Sirius agreed with you. The two of you looked at one another, trying and failing to not fall into a fit of laughter.
"A'right. My thought? Informative video," Remus offered, eyebrows raised. You couldn't help but boo. "Well if you're so bloody right, what do you think is the worst way?"
"Walking in on your parents. Obviously," You shot back at the lanky boy. The whole room got quiet. A string of explitives were shuddered out and each boy shivered with disgust.
"Hm... worst way to get rejected?" You offered with a little shrug. The mood in the room immediately seemed to shift. It was like all the air had been sucked out of it. "What, don't like that one?"
"No, no. Just thinking..." James said quickly.
"Ah, so that's why it smells like something's burning," You teased.
"Not to make myself seem irresistable, but I am unsure of how to answer this one. Anyone need more to drink? I'll make a run," Sirius abruptly stood and headed for the door. The other boys rattled off some requests and let their friend head out.
"Sorry. M'no good with the prompts it seems."
"D'you have one?" Peter asked. "It might give us some ideas."
You shrugged. "Well, it's not the worst, but I know it sucks dragon bones." The boys waived you on and you continued, "The worst rejection is not getting rejected at first and then showing up to the date and the guy's snogging another girl."
"Damn."
"Still think 'lets be friends' hurts more," James muttered.
"Hey. I get you're upset about Evans, but that is dumb. Being friends with someone is by far the best way to develop feelings for them. That way your bond is stronger than just mutual physical attraction. Now, you're still correct in not continuing to pursue her and bothering her to death. But James, have you ever stopped to think that you can be her friend and love her, and just chill until she realizes her feelings for you?" The boy's curls went frizzy as you rubbed the top of his head. His eyes were wide, surprised by your words and fiddled with his glasses.
"You told y/n about Evans?" Peter seemed shocked.
"I think I'll go make sure Sirius doesn't need an extra hand," James blushed and zipped out of the room.
"He's so obviously got a crush on her. ...And that one Slytherin who he refuses to say anything about." You shrugged, answering Peter's question. "It's pretty sweet."
"So what is the worst way? Since apparently your worst experience isn't the worst you can think of?" Remus was teasing. He'd been trying to get you to admit you were fancying Sirius for a few days now. You weren't even sure how he'd figured it out. Lupin and his stupidly not-stupid mind.
"I-I can't remember," You took a long sip of your drink to avoid his eye.
"Oo! What about, by Sirius?"
You nearly spit out your drink. The room blurred around you as you whipped to look at the two boys left with you. Both of them held studying looks; Peter's eyes narrowing and Remus' eyebrows lifting. Silence tugged tighter and tighter the longer you sat there. Even the wind seemed to have stopped for this moment. The floors suddenly felt very hard against your limbs, and your clothes itched and irritated your skin. Every possible thing that could pressed down against you, pushing you for an answer. An involuntary blush spread across your whole face; it stung your ears and burned your cheeks.
"By far the absolute worst way."
***
"When did you two get a conscience?" James scoffed.
"When we realized she had feelings for Pads you git," Remus growled.
"Bloody hell. Why'd she say yes to you?" Peter practically whined.
James pulled off his glasses, rubbing the stress across his face. How had things gotten so tangled? His head hurt with the weight of his own thoughts. His voice came out stringent, "Cause I got a damn conscience and fessed up about my damn bet. She's letting me win."
"Really?"
"Really."
"We've really mucked this up haven't we, boys?"
Remus was undoubtedly correct.

September
Professor McGonagall's classroom was unnaturally hot. The large windows behind her desk sat fully aflame, staining the floor with blaring panes of white heat. Typically, teachers avoided holding class at the hour the sun boiled their classroom - McGonagall likely set this classtime so the heat kept her students honest. At least, that was the assumption you'd come to.
You'd transfigured the apple you'd snatched from the Great Hall into a fan, trying to stay cool. Strands of hair stuck to your neck and the sides of your face despite being held back as much as possible. A familiar figure dropped into the seat next to you. You almost didn't look up - not in the mood to fend off the aggrivating pleas and overwhelming charms of the boy. But you did. And for the first time, you realized Sirius Black just might convince you to agree to something.
An ice cold bottle, ice still collected on the sides, of fizzy-orange juice.
Never had you found Sirius Black more tempting. And that was saying something. Though he was often obnoxious, a tad arrogant, and ridiculously flirtatious, you couldn't help but notice the bits of sincerety in his actions. Sincerety that you felt earned him his good looks and frustrating habits. This moment in particular, had that lovely undertone of sweetness. Afterall, fizzy-orange juice was your favorite... and it was the coldest thing in the room by at least ten degrees.
"Would you like some?" Sirius teased, wicked smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. He was practically laughing, the look of childish desire likely plastered all over your face. You nodded. The laughter continued, but it rang with a warmth you didn't recognize. You quite liked this interesting side of Sirius Black.
"Will you finally agree to be my tutor, study partner, project supervisor for Transfiguration?" Sharp features lit up in excitement, suddenly softer.
"Merlin, yes. Now quit pulling the damn bottle away," You whined, reaching a third time for it. The dark haired boy chuckled and set it neatly on the desk. Not waiting, the cold glass stung your hand as you took the first three sips. Pure relief. You glanced back at the boy, his head resting on his chin and eyes trained on your face. Once again, you were puzzling out the meaning of Sirius' look. You'd never seen him look at anyone else that way. You weren't sure what that meant.
"I'm quite lucky you have a one track mind, Black," You smiled and took another sip.
"Why's that?"
"Well, you see, when I saw this bottle I- well, I would've done anything you asked to get it. Anything. And yet, all I have to do is get you to study." You couldn't help but flirt a little. Sirius was known for torturing girls with his words. It was a secret challenge of yours to try and do the same. "It's a lot less work for me. I would've gone above and beyond convincing you to give it to me."
For the first time that you had ever seen, Sirius Black was speechless.
***
A measley knock broke the conversation. The professor couldn't figure who would be calling on her at this hour. Classes were over for the week, exams began on Monday - most students were certainly cramming information into their brains at this moment.
"One moment," She gave a smile to her guest before standing and attending to the door. Minerva should have expected this particular caller to arrive, knowing for certain that her students would wrap her up into some ridiculous plot. Though at this point, she'd become far too invested to mind.
"I-I'm quite sorry to bother you professor," The girl sniffled.
McGonagall gave her a pitying smile, "Miss y/l/n, you look quite distraught my dear. Have you been crying?" Just as she was about to get a response, the guest in her office dropped their teacup, a shatter crashing so loud. Still in tears, Y/N jumped at the sound and looked at her teacher fully embarrassed.
"You have guest!" Her voice squeaked. "I- oh no. Y-your in a meeting. Buggar. I- I am so, so very sorry professor. I-I'll go."
"Y/n, dear. It is quite alright. Please-" Minerva reached for the girl only to have her shy away. With wide, teary eyes, she shook her head and took off down the hall. Her arms wrapped around her as if everything had gone cold. The professor just shook her head and closed the office door slowly. She drifted easily to her desk, sitting behind it and eyeing the boy across from her. At least he'd cleaned up the broken cup.
"Would you know anything about that?"
"Likely." The boy pushed his fingers forcefully through his hair.
"Sirius, why does it feel like every time I see a female student crying it has something to do with you?"
The boy turned to look at her, tears streaming down his face. This was a new development. The woman repaired the broken cup and refilled it. She placed it tenderly into the lad's hands.
"Well, at least there is a glimmer here," She pat his hand.
"What do you mean Minny?" Minerva didn't have the heart to correct his address, the words coming out so croaked and pained. She looked away from him, pulling out two buiscuits and setting them before the boy.
"Normally young ladies don't cry over being asked on a date. Begs a question of what else Mister Potter said to her?"

+4 extra points if you can guess his emotions (there's very little indication to this so its a little bonus)

Saw a post on Reddit, and now I have feelings. Allow me to stand on this here soap box for a minute.
JKR has stated that Fred and George figured out the passphrase for the Maurader's Map by being coached through it by the map itself. This makes me all the more irritated with the line "Never trust anything if you can't tell where it keeps its brain" and I absolutely hate that she made Arthur Weasley say it. It's a moment completely out of character for him, a man who offers soft comfort and encouragement to his children every day. A man who only ever raised his voice once in 7 books when his sons took a prank too far and intentionally caused harm. There's no way he would berate his daughter, who is clearly torn up about what happened, for getting manipulated, especially not as the first words he speaks to her after she was minutes away from death.
Inconsistent world building leads to inconsistent characters. It's literally never addressed that the map is sentient, just like the fucking diary. Nope, we're just told talking diary = evil, and dumb Ginny should have known better; meanwhile, talking map = funny and brilliant piece of magic.
Fred and George fucked around with a parchment that coached them how to reveal enchantments on it and nothing happened to them. How the hell was an 11yo girl supposed to assume her talking diary was nefarious??? She lives in a literal world of magic where letters scream at you and mirrors offer encouragement and grooming tips. Why the fuck *wouldn't* a magical diary offer sympathy and soothing words, friendship and camaraderie??
I have to step off this soap box, I could ramble on forever, so I'll part with these words - JKR did Ginny dirty

Beauty and The Beast- 2
Tumblr media
Y/N was determined to ignore Sirius. She would have enjoyed his attention if she had not been hurt so many times. But Sirius was stubborn too. He knew that Y/n would avoid him, so he decided to talk to Audrey and ease his way into Y/n’s heart. He spotted her in the courtyard with Ralph, holding hands and sharing small kisses.
Sirius couldn’t help but crave the feeling. Sure, he has dated people, but he never felt truly connected to them. He felt compelled to make an effort for Y/N for some reason. Chances are Audrey will also ignore him, but he is willing to try. He cautiously approaches the couple, who awkwardly smile at him. Sirius thinks this is a good start; at least they don’t hate him.
"Hey guys, I don’t know if you know me, but I am Sirius Black," he said, offering his hand to the couple, who accepted his handshake. "I am Ralph, and this is Audrey. We have seen you around. How can we help you?" Sirius can’t help but think how charming Ralph is. With a single sentence, he was able to impress Sirius.
"I believe you guys are friends with Y/n."
"Ah, yes, Y/n was talking about you."
Sirius’ eyes widened at Audrey’s words, and he could feel his cheeks warm up at the thought of his favorite girl talking about him.
"Though not in the way you would have liked it, she is mostly annoyed at your recent interest in her."
"But why she didn’t even give me a chance?"
"She is scared, Sirius, and I can’t blame her; she won’t show, but she is terrified to let anyone else get close to her; she is scared of you."
He could feel his heartbreak; his mind offered him multiple possibilities as to why you would avoid him. But he didn’t think you might be scared of him and his reputation.
"Alright," he grunted as he sat in front of the confused couple, "help me win her heart."
Audrey scoffed: "You can’t just force people to fall in love."
"And I agree with you; at least I can try, and if she still doesn’t have any feelings for me, I am willing to be her… friend."
Audrey looked at Sirius for any hint of humor, but he seemed pretty serious.
"Ok, fine, we will help you, but if you hurt her, you will wish you had never known me, Sirius Black."
Sirius gulped audibly.
Tumblr media
Y/N sprawled in front of her mirror, her face devoid of any emotions. Her dorm was dark and silent, except she could hear herself breathe. Unlike a few years ago, she didn’t feel like her world was ending, which she thought was progress.
Even if her mind wanted to believe that Sirius was lying, she couldn’t help but feel delighted at his compliment. Her heart fluttered at a simple compliment.
He might not have meant the words, but his one compliment made her entire day. She wiped her tears; this year she had resolved not to hate herself. It is still a work in progress. She covered her mirror again. She could not find a single reason why anyone would like her, let alone love her. She walked out of her dorm to find a bouquet of ranunculus laying in front of her.
She carefully picked it up and saw a note attached to it. It was from Sirius. She started reading the note, and her heart was now beating faster than ever.
Dear Y/n,
I realize that I might have scared you with my advances. I am sorry about that. Let me start from the beginning. My name is Sirius Orion Black. And I think you are one gorgeous lady. I read somewhere that giving someone a bouquet of ranunculus in flower language means "I am stunned by your charms." this is how I feel for you, and I would like to take you on a date.
I know you are scared that I might embarrass you. I have already talked to Audrey, and she will kill me if I make you slightly uncomfortable. I will be waiting for you in the courtyard during the break for your answer.
Yours,
Sirius.
Yours. Such simple words melt her heart. She puts the bouquet in her vase while mental warfare occurs in her brain. She picks out a dress and quickly changes into it, and just get over with this.
Tumblr media
Sirius was anxious. He couldn’t stop his legs from shaking no matter how hard he tried. He looks up as the sun sets. He watched her walk down the stairs leading to the courtyard. Sirius smiled as he felt his heartbeat rise.
He doesn’t understand how one person makes him feel like this. Feel like he can take up any risk just to be in her warm embrace. Y/n notices him smiling under the dusky sky. She carefully walks toward him as if someone will jump out telling her all of this has been a farce.
“Hi Y/n” his voice distracts her from her inner thoughts.
“Hello”
His smile falters. She didn’t even call him by his last name. “Did you like the flowers?” his voice hesitant.
“They were beautiful”
Sirius noticed Y/n’s hand were shivering. He offered his hands to her “may I?”. She let him hold her hands and watched as Sirius smiled warmly at her.
“I know you are scared of me, my reputation. I just want you to give me one chance. I will be the best lover you ever had. I will take you on dates and hold your hands countless times, make you laugh.”
“But why?” her voice cracked.
“Why do I have feelings for you?”
She nodded. He rubbed his thumb in her palm. “I don’t know if my words will convince you but if you let me I can show you”. “Here feel this” he placed her hand on his chest, and she felt his heartbeat rise “now do you believe me that my heart only beats for you?”
"Sirius you can't be in love with me" you tried to escape from his grip but he held you again.
Tears threatened to spill down your cheeks your mind telling you this is all a farce, but your heart ever the hopeless romantic tells you this is an unvarnished truth.
"I am unloveable" you forced your faulty reality on him and ran away toward your darkness as he stood there.
"But I love you" and that was his reality. His heart broke how much you relied on that insecure voice head in your than him to tell you the truth.
For Sirius Black, you deserved only one truth: you deserve love. More than him, more than anyone else in this world and he had to show you. Even if it was the last thing he did for you.
You thought Sirius' feelings for you were just sympathy. You harbored feelings for him for a very long time but you were your own enemy. You wished Sirius would move on from whatever he was feeling and forget about you.

Imagine George and Fred their first year finding the marauder’s map and they’re also taking care of scabbers and he sees them using a map he helped create with his friends.
Imagine how much he’d be wracked with guilt over watching his friendship dynamic play out in front of his eyes as the two twins tried to figure out the password and would see their interaction with the map aka HIM AND HIS FRIENDS
Imagine how much guilt he would feel to be reminded of what he had, and what exactly it was that he betrayed
