Archipelagoes of solar-powered aircraft circling the globe; the staging points of space elevators; Earth's surface as something mysterious, hidden under dense forests of which we harvest only the tops; balloon-mounted algae farms; rogue pilots rescuing gliders who have fallen into the sea.

6. Socialpunk. All need for work has been automated, leaving humanity alone with itself at a party for the rest of time; the formalities of infinite conversations; someone liking things, endlessly; the propagation of truth and lies.

7. Dracopunk. Cities built out of old dragon-bone; great scaled cupolas crawling with tiny, jewel-bright lizards; slick molten-gold patches at the sites of old battles, not to be discussed; dragons grown human-sized hiding out in basements, wondering if they will grow to the size of their great dead ancestors; everyone is terrified of fires, and of what they might mean; this also not to be discussed.

In which the apocalypse came already and now only the dead are left; the conventional dead, largely trying to do day-to-day what they did in life, through ruined cities; some preferring to sleep in great hibernating piles against the day that they may rise; and the unconventional dead, sloughing off their bedsheets, what can we make out of ectoplasm, what walls can we now go through, who can we bring to justice.

9. Forestpunk. Chlorophyll tattoos, bacchanals, bio-solar panels; pine-scented lovers from the North; over time you and your trees grow together, you become a graft and bear fruit; the manipulation of leaves to transmit data, by sound and the obscuration of light; rough scrumpy, dirt and fox tracks.

10. Memepunk. Android 8.0 è Oreo, in versione definitiva da oggi

Le tradizioni sono importanti da rispettare, anche per cose moderne come i sistemi operativi. Per le versioni di macOS Apple ha usato nel corso di svariati anni nomi di grandi felini, passando poi a luoghi californiani a partire da Mavericks. Ubuntu, la celebre distribuzione Linux, battezza da sempre le sue versioni con nomi di animali curiosi, rigorosamente in ordine alfabetico. Anche Google sta seguendo dalla A (anzi, dalla C) alla Z, ma preferisce i dolci. Cupcake, Donut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich, Jelly Bean, KitKat, Lollipop, Marshmallow, Nougat. Quest'anno è il turno della lettera O, e in quel di Mountain View hanno scelto il nome più rumoreggiato dalla stampa di settore nonché tifato da una buona parte degli utenti. Da oggi la 8.0 è ufficialmente Oreo.

Per il brevissimo evento di presentazione svoltosi a New York, Google ha cercato il pieno effetto scenico, a mio parere in modo davvero azzeccato. La data odierna, 21 agosto 2017, ha coinciso con un'eclissi solare totale sugli Stati Uniti. Quale dolce può somigliare così bene all'eclissi se non un'Oreo, doppio biscotto di cacao scurissimo (la Luna) con ripieno di crema bianca alla vaniglia (il Sole)? Anche il gioco col countdown e il video promozionale da supereroe hanno contribuito alla buona riuscita. Come avvenne per KitKat 4 anni fa, essendo Oreo un marchio commerciale Google ha dovuto trattarne l'uso con l'azienda produttrice, Mondelēz. Poco probabile però siano state discussioni tanto impegnative, visti i vantaggi di marketing per ambo le parti.

Ricapitoliamo a questo punto cosa porterà in dote Android Oreo. Big G non promuove per prime le novità estetiche, bensì quelle sotto il cofano, con una velocità di avvio doppia rispetto a Nougat (perlomeno sui Pixel, e posso confermare che non scherzano). Sono state inoltre apportate modifiche al comportamento in background delle app, con alcuni limiti automatici nell'intento di renderle più parsimoniose nel consumo batteria e mantenere la reattività generale del sistema. Andando invece sulle migliorie più visibili, troviamo senz'altro la funzionalità di completamento automatico e salvataggio credenziali promossa a livello di sistema, non solo di Chrome. Gli sviluppatori di app potranno sfruttarla tramite API dedicate e, un po' come avviene per le tastiere, sarà data libertà assoluta all'utente di scegliere il proprio servizio di autofill preferito (1Password, LastPass, ecc.).

Un'altra novità è costituita dalla modalità Picture-in-Picture. Già presente in Android TV, con Oreo permette anche su smartphone e tablet di collocare videochiamate o filmati in riproduzione all'interno di una piccola area dello schermo, mentre si proseguono altre operazioni sul piano principale. Anche le notifiche sono state sottoposte a un maquillage, con l'introduzione dei cosiddetti Dots: qualora arrivino nuovi elementi in un'app, essa li segnalerà con un piccolo puntino sulla sua icona. Con una lunga pressione si potrà vedere il numero di notifiche ricevute, nonché l'ultima arrivata.

Non esclusivamente legate ad Oreo, poiché funzionano pure sulle versioni precedenti, ma comunque con un grado maggiore d'integrazione qui sono le Instant Apps e Play Protect. Le prime permettono di utilizzare le applicazioni in streaming, senza installarle sul dispositivo e richiamandole da Chrome all'occorrenza. La seconda funzionalità è invece il rinnovato sistema antimalware di Google, integrato con Play Store e Services per verificare periodicamente la presenza di app malevoli sul dispositivo, neutralizzandole. Quelle descritte sono alcune delle novità principali: ve ne sono molte altre, tra piccole come le emoji aggiunte e grandi come il Project Treble per semplificare la gestione degli aggiornamenti.

A proposito di aggiornamenti: purtroppo per vedere gli effetti di Treble occorrerà attendere parecchio, dato che riguarderà futuri dispositivi con Oreo preinstallato, con l'unica eccezione per ora dei Pixel (normale e XL) già arruolati nel programma pur partendo da Nougat. Proprio gli smartphone di Google, insieme a Nexus 5X e 6P, al tablet Pixel C e al set-top-box Nexus Player, sono i primi che riceveranno la nuova versione. Anzi, coloro che hanno partecipato al Beta program stanno già ottenendo la build finale. Per tutti gli altri, la palla rimane in mano agli OEM, con tutto ciò che ne consegue per tempistiche e supporto. Nel suo annuncio, però, Google ha citato esplicitamente numerose aziende (Essential, General Mobile, HMD/Nokia, HTC, Huawei, Kyocera, Lenovo/Motorola, LG, Samsung, Sharp, Sony) con cui sta collaborando per permettere loro di rilasciare gli aggiornamenti entro l'anno.
