Pics from the surrealist exhibit at the Flint Institute of Arts
I'm not the biggest fan of surrealism, but this show definitely piqued my interest.

Who, out of these problematic literary fathers, is least likely and most likely to produce a well-adjusted daughter? (I am thinking specifically of choices they personally make, rather than external circumstances, except where those circumstances are the inevitable result of the character of the father)
Adnan Bey
Mr. Earnshaw
Edgar Linton
Heathcliff
Max de Winter
Arthur Huntingdon
Gilbert Markham
Good question.
Least to Most Likely:
- Arthur Huntingdon
I think Huntingdon is not producing anything well-adjusted any time soon.
- Max de Winter:
My own hatred of him might be blinding me, but old Max doesn’t strike me as an empathetic person in the least and he is also a misogynist. I don’t see him being a good father to a daughter. He wouldn’t be actively abusive I guess, at least not physically, but he would be distant.
- Heathcliff
Heathcliff is the one whose treatment would be most bound by external circumstances. Namely, who the daughter’s mother is. Which is extremely unhealthy, but might be better than the total disinterest of Huntingdon and Max.
I think he would probably be a slightly better father if Isabella had given birth to a daughter? His hatred of Linton is partially due to his disappointment by his own admittance. He wanted to see a reflection of himself in the boy but couldn’t. I don’t think he would have the same problem with a daughter.
- Mr. Earnshaw
His placement might be controversial since Mr. Earnshaw is physically and verbally abusive to his daughter in the canon. But I will say, as disappointed as he is in Cathy’s naughtiness, he loves his daughter. Which does not make him less abusive, but is better than total disinterest.
- Gilbert Markham
Gilbert has sexist and violent tendencies, but is generally an “okay I guess” guy. I think he would mostly be an okay father.
- Edgar Linton
Edgar is a loving, indulgent father. But:
1) Cathy Linton’s life is too restricted. He is over-protective
2) He loves her more for her mother’s memory according to Nelly
3) Can be inattentive which is a huge mistake when Heathcliff is around
4) Does not make any preventive plans for her survival after his death until it is too late
5) Does at one point wish that she died before him instead of her being in Heathcliff’s clutches, which is horrifying
6) His treatments of the other women in his life (Catherine and Isabella) aren’t too great
7) He made his daughter inherit his snobbery. Cathy doesn’t associate with any peer. Everyone she associates with is a servant which is not good.
I still think that Edgar is an okay father, the best in the book, but he has some serious issues.
- Adnan Bey
Adnan Bey is tricky because prior to his marriage to Bihter I think he is a good father. He loves his daughter, has an established relationship with her, plays with her, is indulgent but not too indulgent. He of course makes grave parenting mistakes from our 21st century perspective: Nihal’s life is too insular and protected and she is sent to the Island whenever a significant change happens in the household. But I think his is still a relationship with a daughter that is most like a comradery.
Deciding between him and Edgar was difficult because they are too similar, but I ultimately gave Adnan the first place because I think he knows his daughter more than Edgar knows his, his isolating of her is less notable than Edgar’s, and he is less likely to want grotesque things like her dying before him, and his love for her doesn’t seem to have anything to with his own legacy or her dead mother.
Conclusion: I can’t believe Adnan got the first place because he is a terrible father, but when your rivals are like these it is possible I guess.
Adnan, Mr. Earnshaw, Edgar canonically have established relationships with their daughters. Gilbert and Huntingdon have daughters but we don’t see their relationships with them, Huntingdon’s is an illegitimate daughter he doesn’t have a relationship with and Gilbert’s children are just part of the happy ending of the book. Heathcliff and Max de Winter don’t have daughters in the canon. Interestingly, those who are canonically fathers to daughters fared better in the list, perhaps because my judgment of them is less based on imaginary scenarios.

Ramble about a special interest, now, go I wanna hear
🫰🫰🫰
okay okay okay so!! my favourote book series of all time ever literally ever is called the chronicles of st marys by Jodi Taylor. i literally love it so much UGH andni havent read any of the books in a while so my memory is a little rusty but it is definitely a special interest of mine fhshhfj. basically its about this group of historians who "investigate major historical events in contemporary time" (time travel). its actually incredibly respectful in the way it handles it too.(spoilers under the cut)
it mostly focuses on british history for the most part (its a british bookseries) but they do visit troy, the battle of agincourt in france, constantinople (during the sack might i add which. yeah. that was a stressful moment for sure....) etc etc. its so fucking funny like it has me in tears laughing whenever i read it but its literally do devastating at the same time (my favourite book in the series, "and the rest is history", made me cry 8 times in one read through because of how tragic it is...). but its really well written and researched and youd think with like 14 books in the series, multiple short stories and a spin off sister series it would get a bit stale but honestly it doesnt. the characters are so full of life and, well, character.
speaking of the characters. theres Maxwell who is the main character and who we see everything unfold through the eyes of. shes so funny and witty and doesnt know when to stop which can be her downfall sometimes. she acts a lot through anger and does things very impulsively especially in the beginning. it can lead to some very funny moments (like the time she drove her boyfriend's car into the lake when he gave her the cold shoulder and was rude to her (neither of their faults tbh its complicated fhdhhf)) i see a lot of myself in Max. theres a lot of hurt masked by anger inside of her. shes the reason why i chose the name Max fjdhhf
she faces a lot of struggles as well... but its okay because her best friend Tim is there to save the day (and piss on her a couple of times accidentally). He is my favourite character 100% hes funny in a smooth and charming way. literally such a puppy dog i just want to ruffle his hair and give him treats. also have i mentioned that all of these characters that work at st marys are 1000000000000% audhd like these goobers are so neurodivergent i love em all. but yeah Tim is a proper gentleman super sweet and caring and always there for you but also he ends up going through so much shit and it breaks him it fucking destroys him and its so sad to see...
Markham is my next favourite little guy hes such a little guy a little skrunkly wunkly woo a grimey little goober. his characterisation is pretty weak in the first couple of books but he soon becomes really important and fleshed out. hes the court jester the class clown the village idiot. super funny but he also has a tragic past and when he gets serious he gets serious. while Max and Tim were historians, the ones going out of jumps to different time periods to collect data, Markham is security. he makes sure the st marys building is safe and secure and also goes out on jumps with the disaster magnets also known as historians to make sure they dont get into trouble (its actually more like to get them out of trouble at the very last minute when they inevitably do get themselves into trouble tbh djbfhdj) hes indestructible. hes been shot, blown up, fell off of a 3 story tall burning building, frequently has some sort of illness like mange or worms, and the only bit of permenant damage hes recieved is that a chunk of his ear is missing.
then theres Leon... i have a love hate relationship with him. hes Max's love interest. original Leon from the first 3 books is fine i guess...... he does a lot of shitty things but so does Max honestly.... and their relationship gets ruined over one event where really Max was in the wrong but what she did was understandable... still incredibly morally wrong but yeah.... and neither of them stopped loving each other even when they were apart. and then. and then book 3 throws a massive curveball and kills him off. they never made up with each other. and then Max is rescued from being kidnapped by a younger version of Leon from before they met each other and its rough because this Leon is in a very bad spot and not doing well At All. hes almost a completely different person from who Max knew. and she has to convince him that life is worth living. she knows how the rest of his life will go already. she knows he'll meet her and be happy for a while. and she knows that this is the last time she'll ever see him again. and that she cant even say sorry to him now. and that he will never know what this meeting truly meant to her. its fucking heartbreaking and i ugly sobbed every time i read it. and then she dies gets plonked into a different universe (long story) and in this universe shes the one who died and Leon lived. now this Leon i absolutely love to bits hes so sweet and kind and caring. they both know how lucky they are to be given another chance and theyre not going to screw it up and they really do make it work between them.
theres do much more i could ramble about. like Dr Bairstow and Clive Ronan... or Dr Dowson and Professor Rapson and how those two are totally in love... or how Guthrie or the time Max got stuck in the past... but 14 books is a lot to cover fhshhf I'll leave you with the fact that i actually have a signed copy of one of the books which i am super super happy about !!
thank you for giving me the space to ramble <3<3<3

hi! I hope you're doing well! I have a couple questions about how commissions work, if that's okay. I joined your ko-fi recently in hopes of getting a commission next month, even though I know I won't be able to stay a member forever (unemployed college student here), but I'm excited to support you while I can!!!!
Anyways, questions: Do you usually open a round of commissions every month? How do you communicate with the commissioner about details/progress? And the most important question: If I commission you of my d&d character, am I allowed to use the art as a token image for our game on a virtual table top? (roll20, in this case) It would just be for my little group to see, but I'd love to have Actual Art as my token rather than a picrew like I have now.
Thanks for answering, and have a lovely day!! Your art is AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! <33333
(ask 1/2)
Tumblr media
hi there!! thank you so much for messaging, and for being one of my members!! i never expect anybody to join up indefinitely - any amount of time and money at all is much appreciated and helps a lot!!
as for comms, i always aim to open them once every few weeks! i try to stagger them so that i'm able to make enough money for bills. i say the turnaround time is 30 days max in my usual comms post, but it's more typically a couple weeks. you also asked at a great time, because they open for members today, and fully open tomorrow!! i'm doing some errands, but in about an hour they'll be open for you! i always send the uncoloured sketch within a week and ask if any adjustments are needed. after i finish the comm, you can also ask for minor adjustments! you're also more than welcome to use the art in any personal way you like! just no commercial use, and if you repost it anywhere please credit me!
thank you so much for asking about my ocs!! i've been playing dnd for about 5 years now, but have only really been in a few campaigns and am DMing my own homebrew setting campaign! my first oc (not including childhood ones that i don't really remember) is one i've never had as a PC, but i just got to introduce him as an NPC in my home game! his name is rothgar van markham or rothgar mith'rael, a half elf barbarian who started out as a dragon age oc roleplaying blog on here in 2015.
my favourite oc is probably still underhill, my tiefling/drow swashbuckler rogue who hates lying and stealing unless it's from rich assholes! there's much art of him on my blog, as well as another fave oc, avarice! they were definitely tumblr's fave oc of mine fbjsklfj he's a fire genasi/tiefling bard/rogue with lots of horror flare. i love tieflings, and i like to mix things up with them! i'm not 100% sure i have a favourite class, because i love all of my characters and they're all different! rogue is very fun though; underhill has a +19 sleight of hand and a 26 passive perception on a good day, so that's fun!
you can see most of my art of ocs on kofi, as opposed to slogging through my blog for it!! i also do all of my comms through kofi to keep things organized! i posted art of my newest oc on there for members last night - i'm not sure what his name is yet!! avarice and underhill art, and underhill's vampire husband anderson, are all on there too!
thank you so much for supporting me and liking my art! it means a lot to me and this made my day!!!

Ah, pea brain moment. Ignore the first one. How would Markham feel if his MC wanted to leave with Markham though. Maybe they're begging to be able to go outside because they miss the world but they want to be with him too
I hope they have a silver tongue. Or the saddest puppy dog eyes. Even if their speech skill is maxed, Markham is vehemently against going outside unless it's necessary. While he's swooning at the fact that they want him with them, the world outside the lab wasn't made for him. He wasn't made for it. Other monsters, other creatures may be living in it, possibly even thriving, but he's far too self-conscious and self-loathing to ever be comfortable topside.
Occasionally he might take them on short walks, but only at night, and he never strays far from the abandoned warehouse that hides their home. If he thinks there's the slightest chance they'll take off though, and he won't even risk it. He hates breaking their heart, but he hates the idea of being without them more.

Review 541: Space Shipped
Presented By:
Phoenix Tears Productions
“Can we have an immersive world where my choices DON’T unalive someone?”
That was the question Ricky asked after counting all the characters in the immersive dramas that we had taken off the census, including ourselves, by choosing the wrong door or outcome. If you’re wondering our body count goes into the forties which includes two actresses, a space explorer, and two bunnies in a space lab. That is why we were excited but reticent when we entered “Space Shipped” by Phoenix Tears. We were just sitting in the waiting room and telling ourselves: “knowing our track record the entire space station is going up in smoke.” That’s when we saw this is nothing of the sort. We are just here for Max’s birthday party and the goal(hopefully) was romance!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pictured: UL to DR Megan Markham, Lorena Ervin, Logan Creasman, Emilie Sheetz, Mallory Vance
The Ship
...a Romance like our roguish space captain and our person of the hour. Markham and Creasman were two of our favorite performers in the show. They have a very familiar way with each other which made their scenes together really special. We don’t know what decisions it takes to get to their plotline but it’s very worth it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
MAVEN
We were floored by the use of a central AI in the waiting room to anchor the experience together. Maven is ready to spill the tea and share the receipts. This is a great use of both the Zoom platform and the sci-fi genre. Maybe it was Ervin’s special take on the role of a bot that knows everything but won’t divulge anything. We’re wondering when we can discard Alexa and get a MAVEN of our own.
Tumblr media
The Duo
Okay, we HAVE to talk about the use of a puzzle element. This group of scallywags will send guests everywhere trying to get passwords or docking codes and it's a very entertaining time just watching them figure it out. Sheetz and Vance draw you in with their affable and roguish manner. it’s hilarious to see them work. You could spend the whole time watching them in The Bottle and not feel like any of it is wasted.
Tumblr media
People love to say that we need more queer stories and queer spaces in the arts. Yet what we want to see more than anything is more stories and spaces like this! We want to see more queer sci-fi. We want more queer weirdness. We want to see more spaces online like this in general where the guests can choose how they want to interact, and they can create chaos in a digital realm for two hours. If you haven’t made chaos in an immersive space online and want to know how then keep your eyes glued to Phoenix Tears and catch them the next time they bring their particular brand of Zaniness online.
