I realized I haven’t talked about it… but I’m super glad Michael called Athena to Harry’s therapist. Like she should have been called out (I mean, I’m not even talking about the hitting). I love her, but she should have been made to go to mandatory counseling after May tried to commit suicide, as soon as people found out and then the whole arresting the bully wouldn’t have been on Athena. She needed to be put in her place but Athena didn’t need to be going off on her own like a Lone Ranger. Like, you’re telling me that anyone who had their child try that would be a rational employee and of sound mind? Nah man. She should have been made to get counseling after Hudson almost killed her, and not that crappy, “I’m not here about the other victims. I’m here if you need me,” thing that they did.
Honestly, how the entire Grant-Nash tribe haven’t all been made to do individual and family counseling after each of May’s, Michael’s, Athena’s, Bobby’s, and/or Harry’s ordeals is beyond me. Like all of these fools almost died, and your telling me that each instance couldn’t have used individual or family counseling?
My mom had four different instances in which a different type of cancer tried to kill her until it finally succeeded the fourth time. We got counseling every time! Like the idea that not only you but that someone you love came so close to death is something that needs to be talked about not just one on one but together.
All this to say, Athena you and your entire family are in desperate need of some talk therapy. Put everything out on the table so you can acknowledge it and work through it. Otherwise it will be a festering wound that can attack at any moment.

“It was humiliating. She just walked over, plugged herself into my call and took it over. Well, did she save the guy? Not the point.”

Something I appreciate SO MUCH about OG 911 is that beauty for the women is just… not a Big Thing™️.
Like yes, the cast is all INSANELY HOT but story-wise: we never get any episodes about looks. Hell, we never even get comments about looks.
Athena never worries that as she ages, she’ll be less attractive to Bobby. May never complains about the dispatch polo being unflattering. Maddie has shown no signs so far of worrying that she’s not sexy enough for Chim anymore after having a baby. (In fact, even when she’s pregnant, the show makes a point of showing how much she and Chim are into each other, and in Parenthood, it’s STRONGLY implied that they are just as into each other as they were before they had Jee-Yun). The stories for the women of this show are always about grief, and hope, and love - not their bodies, or their hair, or their clothes.
And the costume department seconds this message that it’s not about sex appeal or beauty standards without even the slightest bit of hesitation. I can’t think of a single instance where a woman is dressed for the male audience’s gaze - there are no plunging necklines, no tight fitting clothes that would be incredibly impractical, no high heels that could break an ankle, no uniforms unbuttoned a little more than the men’s.
Every single woman on this show dresses comfortably! Athena frequently wears cargo pants. Hen is constantly rocking the matching track suits. May likes graphic t-shirts. The uniforms that Hen and Athena wear in particular, are not sexy! They’re not low cut, the boots they wear are not cute, and they actually carry things in their pockets and on their belts, which is so far removed from any other show I’ve ever watched.
Maddie and Chim’s date scene in Pinned, which is arguably the one moment in the entire show that is about sex appeal, is about their attractiveness to each other, not how attracted the audience could be to them. Maddie is wearing a loose, flowing dress and boots, not some slinky number clinging to her every curve. Her robe the next morning covers her entire body, it doesn’t have a deep plunging v neck, and it’s actually so fluffy it hides any curves Maddie has. Even when she’s technically “undressed”, she is still comfortable and they do it in a way where she is not objectified at all.
The women on this show use their bodies in powerful ways and never ONCE are they concerned about how they look while they do it. Their abilities are never called into question bc of how they look, and they’re never objectified, not even by the sometimes-vile-on-purpose people who they come across at work. No one tells them they’d be prettier if they smiled. Ever.
If the women are sexy, it’s because they are powerful, and confident, or just exuding so much love and happiness that it takes your breath away - not at ALL because of how they dress.
It’s such a refreshing breath of air, and they do it so well, to the point where I hadn’t even realized what a Non-Deal it was until I was watching something else where it WAS a big deal.

Look, this ice cream's not just for you. I had a pretty crappy day at work yesterday.
Image ID: gifset of a scene from 911, Season 5 Episode 4: Home and Away
gif 1: Harry digs into his ice cream as he says, “Mom and Dad won't stop hovering. "What are you watching?" What are you reading?" Pretending like they're not checking in on my damaged mental state.“
gif 2: As she raises her spoon, May says, “You were already pretty damaged.“
gif 3: Harry raises a spoonful of ice cream, ready to throw it at his sister. May puts her hands up in surrender and says, “Hey, I just...”
gif 4: They both return to their ice cream as May continues, “They're worried, okay? They probably feel a little guilty that it happened.“
gif 5: Harry responds, “Yeah, well, they should. Dad was standing right there, and he didn't even notice the guy walking off with me. And Mom...“ He starts out angry before petering out.
gif 6: May finishes Harry’s thought, “She was the reason the guy was there.“ Harry looks away but nods slightly.
gif 7: Harry says, “I know I'm not supposed to be mad at them, but-”
gif 8: May leans forward and says, forcefully, “Hey, no. Be mad at them, if that's how you feel. Just don't bottle up your emotions and put on a happy face for other people. That never works, and it will never make you feel better.
gif 9: Harry nods and moves to get more ice cream. He says, “Okay. Tell me how nice you were to that mean lady at work.” May scrunches her nose and admits, “Way too nice.”
gif 10: Harry lifts his spoon as he says, “Yeah? Well, there's always tomorrow.” May smiles and responds, “Yeah, there is.”

But I'm also good at this, and I've been trained by some very talented dispatchers, and I've learned important things from all of them. And when I make a mistake, it's usually just once. I learn from it.
