OK! This is ridiculous at this point but DSMPblr, LEARN HOW TO TAG POSTS!!

Y’all are pretty good about putting ship warnings and putting “/rp” when it’s needed but that isn’t always enough! You need to learn how to tag? Fine, I’ll teach you!

Here’s how I typically tag my posts. (It’s a pretty standard tagging system. Nothing special.)

General tagging!

Put the fandom, in this case “mcyt” (optional) and “dream smp” (mandatory on related posts) or sometimes you might need to put a “tales from the smp” tag in. Abbreviated titles are also acceptable.

Is this crossover content? If so put on a crossover tag. For example “hc x dsmp” or “dsmp x mcd”. (Typically I like to put the SMPs the post is about in chronological order of when they started airing, but you could alphabetize it or just not have an official order to it.)

Is it an au? If so, put the fandom + au. In this case “dream smp au”. Does the au have its own tag? Then use it!

(This one is definitely optional but) Does your posts heavily feature a certain duo, trio, or other YouTube group? Great! Tag them! Ex “dream team”, “clingy duo”, “sleepy bois inc.”

Next up you put the character tags! Ex “Karl Jacobs”, “Quackity HQ” or you might need their TFTSMP character as well. Please if it’s a TFTSMP character, put an abbreviated episode title or TFTSMP in front, especially if they have a common name like “Isaac”. If the character is only meantioned in once in that post they probably don’t need to be tagged. (I tend to alphabetize my character tags, but that’s just personal preference and is optional)

Is it shipping related? Put the ship name! Ex: Karlnapity. Is it a platonic ship? Be sure to state that. (Y’all are pretty good about that one)

Warnings! (I typically put these last because they’re for people who have the tags blocked but you can put these first if you want)

Does this post contain spoilers? If so, use the “dsmp spoilers”, or “dream smp spoilers” tags. If it’s tales from the smp, add a spoiler warning for that as well. If it’s live blogging be sure it to tag it as such (about half of you are tagging live blogging and to those half thank you).

Now here’s a big one, trigger warnings. Use them. If you have a gory art post, tag “gore tw”. If your fic involves a character’s death, tag it appropriately, with “death tw”, “character death tw”, or “minor character death tw”. This goes for pretty much any warnings a post may warrant. Even if it’s just a meantion of something. Some people have triggers and although you can’t always tag everything, y’all could at least try to tag common ones. Please, even if it’s just a meantion, or if it’s only implied, tag it.

Notes:

Feel free to change the order in which you tag things. This is more of a guide than a concrete tagging system, but some things do need to be tagged, no matter what. (Trigger warnings, spoiler warnings, and ship tags)

/rp. It’s not necessarily required but it can be very helpful and I’m sure those who need it appreciate it. (Y’all are pretty good with slash indicators. Thank you for being mature about those and not making fun of it. Some people genuinely can’t tell & slash indicators help with that)

Hybrid SMP is a big one. There’s already a roleplay group, that’s been around for a while, called Origins so um- maybe don’t tag your posts as that. The DSMP fan base is already so big that it kinda wipes out a lot of other fanbases. (Even the hermit!tommy AU was enough to warrant the need for making crossover tags mainstream due to y’all flooding the Hermitcraft tag)

I am going to reiterate this because it’s important: Certain characters have really common names or names that coincide with pre-existing tags, so to prevent cross-tagging either put what they’re from before the name or you can list out their full gamer tag, for example using “dreamwastaken” instead of just “Dream” or “TFTSMP Jack” instead of just “jack” (especially that last one. Some people may get Ponk’s character confused with Jack Manifold)

You can add in tags for the kind of content as well but, its preferable to have “DSMP” in front (a lot looser on this one because if you were to search up “incorrect quotes” you’ll see some stuff from the SuperWhoLock days of tumblr mixed in with Harry Potter and Sanders Sides, so that one doesn’t matter that much). Ex “DSMP Fanart”, “DSMP memes”

Definitely optional, but if a post is aimed at the community itself I highly recommend using the tags “MCYTblr” or “DSMPblr” (if it’s just aimed at the Dream smp fandom, it’s preferred to just tag as “DSMPblr” and not “MCYTblr”)

If you ever forget to tag something or need to remove a tag, the great thing about tumblr is, you can come back and edit posts at any time. I retag old posts all the time.

I cannot stress this enough, if something is just barely mentioned it doesn’t need to be tagged, unless the thing in question can be extremely triggering, in which case, trigger warn it. It’s basic human decency. Tags aren’t just to get as many people as possible to view something, they’re also there for if someone doesn’t want to see something.

Selphia Haven: How it Began

Just over a year ago, I decided to make Selphia Haven. I would like to believe most blogs are made just for fun, or in order to show support and love for a special niche.

This blog was originally made for a different purpose.

Please note that my story may hold some triggering subjects for people. Please read at your own risk.

It was February of last year when I realized I had depression, but the seeds of it started to plant a lot earlier. For example, I think the hopelessness in my life started around the time that the Charlottesville white nationalist protest was being covered. News stories like this are shocking, and unbelievably scary, for a young adult who is trying to find their way in life.

I had always tried to desperately hold onto the belief that everyone, everywhere, can love and care for each other if they are either given the right knowledge or the right opportunities. I had originally picked up this belief as a child, and wanted to grow up to become a writer who would share stories with kind messages. I pursued a passion for writing all the way up until university, wherein I discovered psychology. My area of focus switched from becoming a writer to becoming a counsellor. I was going to help people, to become someone that could help manifest hope and love within people who had lost their way.

News stories like white nationalism, and similar hateful topics, made that hope slowly slip away from my fingers.

It was a slow fall. I don't remember what happened, exactly, between the Charlottesville protests and February of last year that really wore down my hope. But, by the time the Parkland school shooting happened, all that hope disappeared. The last shred of my love for the world was gone.

What are you supposed to do in life when all this terrible, terrible stuff happens in places that you cannot directly impact? Things far worse than you can imagine, to people far younger than you might think. Watching on a TV screen, you can distance yourself; pretend it doesn't happen. But you know. You know that these terrible things are someone's reality. Someone, somewhere, has to deal with each and every one of these realities that pop up on our news stations. And you can do nothing to help it.

I didn't do much from February onwards. I ate. I slept. I still went to school and worked. But it was...robotic? Everything just kind of happened. Nothing held purpose or meaning. Assignments were just assignments. Work was just work. Food was just food. And sleep was never enough.

My love for my future career was gone. I no longer wanted to be a counsellor, because I couldn't bear to deal with it. I couldn't bear to think that I would be facing these realities every single day—talking with people who had gone through losses of loved ones, suicide attempts, rape, abuse, and so much more—and yet could not provide a source of hope for them. How do you find hope for others when there are stories out there that tell us that everything bad is still happening, right now, right here, in this moment? I could be murdered next week by simply being in the wrong supermarket when a terrorist walks in and starts shooting.

I hadn't exactly contemplated suicide. Another belief I held on to was that, no matter what happens, every step alive is still a step in a growing direction. I would not commit suicide; but I was starting to think about it a lot more. For example: What it would be like to die. And, well, how long it would take for this belief to slip from my fingers just as quietly as my previous belief on the love in the world did. How long would it be before I actually started contemplating it. How long would it be before I actually committed it. What would it take for me to believe that death would be the "best option."

What got me moving wasn't through some miraculous determination. It was fear. I didn't want to die— It scared me to even be thinking about it. I still loved things in this world. My family. My friends. I actually did like school, and though I had been viewing my schoolwork at this time a mostly assignments, I did want to continue learning about the mysteries behind psychology. It was more than just the big things, there were also simple things I wanted to live for. I love ice cream. I love the smell of vanilla. I love the feel of the sun. I love the feel of the rain too, actually, and you can't feel these things, smell these things, taste these things when you're dead.

I wanted to stay alive. I wanted to still laugh at things. I had more funny videos I wanted to watch. More books I wanted to read. There are things in this world that I haven't even heard of yet that I want to stay for and experience in the future. I wanted to write. Oh my god, I wanted to write so much. I would write without end when I was in high school, but gave it up when I started pursuing psychology. I never got back to it because I felt I wasn't good enough, but I still wanted to do it.

All these lovely things that I wanted to do, and see, and experience...

But no effort to give.

I was tired, always. Constantly. My motivation to do anything outside of "the mandatory" (School, work, etc.) was nonexistent. I wanted to write, but every sentence I wrote looked ugly, or wrong, or faulty in some way. I wanted to go out for walks, but I also didn't want to get up and out of my room. I wasn't confident in anything I did; including the things I did at school and work.

I just needed something though. I wanted to do something. Anything.

I didn't start Tumblr for Selphia Haven specifically; I started it to look at funny pictures of animals (see also: an escape from reality). But it seemed like an inviting website to find...something to do on it. It wasn't limiting like on Twitter where I could only have, like, one blog per email. Tumblr gives the opportunity to try many different blogs, if you choose to pursue many different niches.

So, something small, then. I wanted to do something small. Not something meaningful; just something that would motivate me to get out of bed and do...something outside of the mandatory. It was here that I discovered something that seemed easy enough: incorrect quote blogs. In fact, I was so interested in hearing random, funny quotes that I even follow blogs for fandoms I have never seen anything from (eg. Voltron, Harry Potter, Mystic Messenger).

RF4 wasn't my first stop, but seeing as Pandora Hearts and Vanitas no Carte already had frequently updating incorrect quotes blogs, I had to find some other fandom that didn't quite have an incorrect quote blog yet. And... Well, Rune Factory did have one before I started. @overheard-at-selphia existed a few months before I walked in. However, they seemed to only be updating maybe once or twice a month. I thought for a day about whether they might be open to sharing the spotlight with me. Then, I decided that, what the hell, I'll just do it and if they aren't a fan of it, they can always just message me and tell me to shut up.

(I still follow @overheard-at-selphia too. They still update sometimes. It makes me happy.)

On June 14th, 2018, I made my first awkward post.

I made a commitment to myself then: I would make 5 posts a day. They were easy enough to make (this was, of course, before I started adding images) so this kind of goal was realistic for me. Also, I was in the heat of summer, so I didn't have schoolwork to worry about. The queue system still saves me to this day; I don't need to worry when I know I have a busy week coming up, because I can just fill it up when I have effort, and then let it run on my "off days".

Small motivations included just a handful of notes per post, and a handful of followers that gave me incentive to continue moving. Followers meant that people were relying on me to continue making posts. I couldn't just stop without reason; this little project was my own, but I created it to be my own meaningful "mandatory project".

Five little posts a day. Gradually, gradually, gradually, I discovered some courage to try something new. I created the picture incorrect quotes through a small burst of motivation in November, and the results had been astounding. I went from getting maybe 10 notes per post (If I was lucky) to around 20-50 notes per post. And that's not even counting this fukkin monster of a post that exploded straight outta nowhere.

Three posts a day. Gradually, gradually, gradually, I discovered some new courage. Gradually, gradually, gradually, I started writing again. Gradually, gradually, I wrote something. I finished writing something. I actually posted something I wrote; just over one year of Selphia Haven's existence.

I'd love to be able to say life is better now, but I can't really say that for certain. I'm not really sure if things will be okay, and I can't make promises about life when news stories are just as depressing as they have ever been. I have no grand answers for the mysteries that plague our existence; why are we alive and what's the point in all this. And, really, none of the problems that caused my depression have really been "solved" (I still don't want to be a counsellor anymore and I haven't found a different career path yet, for example).

But...I dunno. I'm enjoying this. Making Selphia Haven. It may not be a grand, exuberant show that's going to cure depression or save the children or give starving people food, but... It's my little effort. It's my little attempt at making a bit of light. A little bit of laughter in this dark world. I think we all need that— A little bit of something that gives us light. For me, that was creating Selphia Haven. Making a little effort of my own to (hopefully) make someone smile— Even if it's just a little smile. If my existence on this Earth is just to bring a small smile to your face, well... I guess that makes it worth it for me to continue, right?

That's why I'm so eager to promote any kinds of Rune Factory blogs you guys make, actually. It was me gaining those first few followers that motivated me to continue my first small steps... Gradually, gradually, gradually, I hope that those who start small can grow into something larger too. That people have something small that they can love, or create, or follow along with.

But, I also realize that, you know, not everyone experiences depression in the same way, right? My depression was helped because I had something small I could do every day. No story is the same; but I hope that if you do want to try out making a blog like mine, you will allow me to advertise it for you.

This...maybe isn't a super uplifting story, but hey. It's my story, and it seems to be working out for me so far. I'm happy with it. I'm happy that I'm writing again. And I'm going to continue making gradual steps towards the future too, which might lead me to something bigger. Who knows.

...But I hope I can finish Castle to the West, at least. Writing that story makes me really happy. So... I guess I hope you all continue your small steps to find that thing that makes you happy too. And if you need help, please ask for help! I’d be happy to give you my support!

In Defense of Fanfiction

So, fairly recently (at time of writing), a fellow writer decided to disparage authors who cut their teeth writing fanfiction which, in their words “actively teaches you to write worse.”

Now, as someone who did cut their teeth writing fanfiction, my gut instinct to seeing this tweet was to angrily quote tweet it with the reply “Oh fuck off.” But that much as a I wanted to do that, I didn’t for several reasons. For one, I just generally try to be restrained and selective for who I get that angry and confrontational with online, reserving it mostly for politicians, celebrities, and DC’s Titans. Entities at once morally bankrupt, and largely immune to any kind of damage that I personally can inflict due to an absence of actual humanity.

And that all being said, this person was… well a person. A person with a narrow-minded and incorrect opinion, but still a person. And a fellow writer. So then I thought about refuting their bad-take, but that felt too much like swooping in to mansplain writing to someone who by all accounts seems to have been doing it at least as long as I have, and who’s been considerably more professionally successful at it.

Plus, like I said, I got my start in fanfiction. My origins are quite literally being targeted and attacked here. And feeling targeted can make people say and do some really stupid stuff if they don’t stop and think beforehand.

Basically, I didn’t want to start a Twitter beef over this because quite frankly the internet would be a happier place if we all just did that less, but I still saw a lot of bad arguments and missed points, so I couldn’t just say nothing. And so here we are, at a compromise between Twitter arguing and saying nothing—blogging about it.

The writer in question turned her single tweet into an entire thread that brought up a lot of very different, very unrelated issues, some of which I want to touch on as well, but before I do any of that, I want to answer the central argument, taking it as much as I can on face value and inferring as little else as possible: that fanfiction “actively teaches you to write worse.”

Does it?

Twitter is a terrible medium for communication. It rewards broad, inflammatory statements and its character limit leaves little room for nuance. Some people attempt brute-force circumventions of that limit, but most don’t, and the site isn’t suited to it. So it is unsurprisingly difficult to parse out exactly what they meant, but I can take a stab at it by covering as many bases as I could think of.

Does the medium of fanfiction inherently teach poor writing fundamentals, like prose, plot structure, or character development?

No. Writing, like most skills, is honed by practice. Every time you think about the best word to put on a page or the best way to structure a sentence or story, you are getting better at writing. You start a sentence, and think to yourself, “Hang on, there’s gotta be a better way to word that.” And that moment, where you reflect on your craft and look for ways and spots to improve it—that is you learning. Developing. Maybe you think of a way to word that sentence better, maybe you don’t. But the act of thinking, of searching, of even just acknowledging that it could be better is still work towards improvement. Doesn’t matter if it’s dialogue written for Harry Potter or for your original character, do not steal.

90% of fanfiction is crap. But 90% of everything is crap. Fanfiction is perhaps more famous for being mostly crap, but it’s really not hard to understand why. First off, the only barrier to entry for writing is basic literacy. If you can read this sentence, you can try your hand at writing. The difference between fanfiction and say, traditionally published works, is that fanfiction kind of keeps that low barrier to entry, whereas to get traditionally published you typically have to impress at least two other people—your agent, and then the editor you agent sends your shit to. And even then, that’s not a insurmountable barrier to entry. A metric butt-ton of people do it all the time.

In short, with fanfiction, the “slush pile” is open and visible, whereas with most other stuff, the only people who have to read that garbage are agents and editors, God have mercy on their souls. But rest assured, there is just as much shitty original fiction as there is shitty fanfiction.

In addition to the low barrier to entry, fanfiction is where a lot of people first dip their toe into this gig. And unless you are an unparalleled prodigy, when you’re new at something, you are bad at something. Which is fine. Doing something poorly is the first step to doing something competently. Practice is practice.

Now, you can practice something incorrectly and do yourself wrong—anybody who knows about proper weight lifting form can tell you that. But for the most part, a writer working on fanfiction is no more likely to do this than someone writing anything else.

The two exceptions I can think of are character and worldbuilding. Somewhat unique to fanfiction (we’ll talk about that in a minute) versus original fiction is that in fanfic, the characters and world are already established. Depending on the kind of fic you write, you may very well not get practice or experience making characters or worlds, since you��re using someone else’s work to basically cover that for you. So, sometimes, in this one specific area, fanfiction does feature something of a crutch that could theoretically lead to deficiencies in a writer’s fundamentals.

That said, that is very much dependent on the type of fanfic. Some works feature entirely original casts, telling a new story with new characters in an established setting. And even in fics which predominantly focus on the established cast, fanfic writers are downright notorious for adding new, original characters into the mix. Most of them are… awful. But we already covered why that is. Remember, bad writing is not the same thing as bad practice.

Ditto worldbuilding, where we’ve got plenty of fanfics that outright replace the world of the established story. The Alternate Universe concept is a very popular one in fanfic.

I will say in a closing than with worldbuilding and character, fanfiction does typically replace only one of these while keeping the other. Mainly because if you changed both, you’re liable to have left the realm of fanfiction altogether.

Does fanfiction, by its nature, leave you unprepared for making the transition to the professional writing world?

Let’s pretend for a moment that we didn’t just shoot down the idea that writing fanfiction means you never honed your ability to create your own original world and characters. That’s nonsense, but let’s say for purely hypothetical arguments sake, that if you start out writing fanfiction, your character-creating muscles will atrophy and you’ll only be able to work with pre-existing concepts, worlds, and characters. Does fanfiction leave you unprepared for making it in the world of professional writing?

For your consideration, I present: the very concept of episodic television. TV shows regularly bring on writers who did not originate either the show or its characters. TV writers craft stories borrowing a world and characters that somebody else came up with. The only difference between them is fanfiction is they got paid and get to be stamped as canon. Same muscles getting used. Same kind of exercise.

The spec script, the method by which most people showcase their ability to write for TV, is literally just fanfiction.

Then we have adaptations and retelling of both licensed and public domain properties, where once again, we have scores of writers, taking characters and concepts that they did not come up with, and using them to tell their own stories, or even just put different spins on the originals. What if Hades and Persephone, but without the whole “against her will” thing? Hey Marvel, can I use your Norse god character to tell a story about how societies built on the back of colonialism are inherently flawed and shouldn’t be preserved at the expense of the people?

The skillset of playing with other people’s toys to make something compelling is an incredibly valuable one for a writer to have. If anything, I’d argue that fanfiction is even better suited to teaching this skillset than writing original fiction.

And as a quick aside, that practice of playing with other people’s characters and constantly asking “Is this in character for them?” is a very useful practice that actually translates very well to writing your own characters. When you invented a character, it can be tempting to declare anything you write “in-character” since, well, you wrote it, and they’re your creation. But that thinking can easily lead to disjointed characterization.

I routinely ask “is this in-character?” while writing for characters I created. It makes me a better writer, and I learned how to ask that question and how to identify the answer from writing fanfiction.

Does fanfiction distort your sense of good taste?

This is the closest I could possibly come to agreeing with the original argument. The last time I was actively involved in it, the fanfiction community had pretty low standards, actually? I say this, because when I was writing fics, I was actually heaped with praise and attention, almost all of which was near universally good.

But I was not good. I was bad. I was very bad. Because I was in junior high, and an idiot, and those fics were the first thing I ever wrote that was longer than seven pages. But I updated my fics daily over the summer, in a very popular fandom that predominantly targeted people my age. So I got lots of fans and praise, and I started to think I was a good writer. Even worse than that, other people thought I was a good writer, and told even more people that I was.

Which is an affront to good taste.

That having been said, even though I do hold fandom and its nature partially to blame for the single most humbling aspect of my entire life, I also just hold adolescence in general to blame? Maybe? I like to think that much as I grew beyond my poor grasp of my own woeful incompetence, so too did my audience grow up and get a better understanding of what actually good writing is.

But then again, EL James and Reki Kawahara have made more money than I’ve ever seen in my life. So maybe neither fanfic nor adolescence is to blame. Maybe sometimes trash just sells.

As an aside, I hope this doesn’t come off as me trying to be mean or make fun of all those people who liked my old stuff. I know I’m embarrassed by it, and the only reason I haven’t deleted it all is because I need an ego check every now and again (and they’re also how I met my wife). But whether you also did a 180 on my old stuff as you got older or you still unironically think it’s good… thank you for the support. You are my humble beginnings and I would not be the person I am today without all of you.

…and that’s enough getting sentimental and making this about me, let’s go back to debunking opinions that are objectively wrong because I disagree with them.

The Other Stuff

I feel I’ve thoroughly said my peace on the original argument put out by my colleague. Namely, that they are wrong. But I’d also like to very quickly address the everything else they spewed out. My takes on this are considerably less long winded and probably could have been sanded down to a Twitter reply, but I still figure their inbox is getting enough shit already, and I want to make this more about the arguments than the person.

I’m not going to cover everything in detail, especially since I am super not qualified to speak on some of them—there is only so much I as a cishet dude feel comfortable giving my opinion on—but I will cover the bits that stood out and ground my gears.

EL James and Cassandra Clare are “fucking terrible”

No disputing the EL James part. Her character work is atrocious, her understanding of actual kink and BDSM dynamics and lifestyles is woeful, her plot bears clear evidence of serialized work that was not properly cleaned up prior to publication.

I haven’t read Cassandra Clare’s work. I have heard both good and bad things about it, but let’s say for argument’s sake she’s also not great.

This comment shows a distinct lack of knowledge of just how many authors, many critically acclaimed, write fanfiction on the side or got their start in it. Neil Gaiman writes fanfiction—and usually manages to get paid for it. I could go on with a long and yet still non-exhaustive list of authors who have done or still do it. Bottom line, there are some very high profile, not good writers whose start in fanfiction has been effectively weaponized against them to further underline their badness—“Of course EL James is bad. What did you expect from someone who started in fanfiction—while simultaneously many good writers have their connections to it downplayed by either choice or their own profile.

“Low effort formulaic lowest-common-denominator writing is bad actually”?

I almost brought this into main discussion, but I said I would infer as little as possible and on its own, this tweet didn’t directly say it was talking about fanfiction. I would argue it heavily implied it, and I very much doubt the author of the tweet would disagree with me, but I made the no inferring rule and I stuck to it.

I’m actually still going to take this argument on its own for a moment. I’ve already covered how and why fanfiction is generally seen as bad—low barrier to entry and the bad stuff is as easy to find as the good stuff—so I want to talk about something else. “Low effort writing is bad. No real arguments. I could jokingly say Neil Gaiman could drunkenly scribble something on a napkin that would outclass my best efforts, but I actually don’t have that low an opinion of myself.

Lowest-common-denominator writing is probably bad. In general, I think trying to appeal to the lowest common denominator is a good way to make uninspired trash, but on the other hand…fuck it, I’m liable to be included in that lowest common denominator most of the time. That’s the whole goddamn point of the LCD. It casts a broad net. And there’s a place for that. I don’t think it should be a big place, but still a place.

“Formulaic writing is bad” though? That I also just straight up disagree with. Formulas are a tool. And like every tool, they can be used really well, or really poorly. Used well, a formula can provide a solid structure around which to build interesting stories or ground the audience in otherwise unfamiliar settings. Don’t call a hammer a bad tool just because you’re hitting the nail wrong.

Several arguments discussing fanfictions relationship to queer and female audiences/writers/identities:

Nope, not touching that.

Oh fuck off.

Fanfiction isn’t collaborative or about community because “it's all corporate IP” and “Ultimately, someone else legally owns it, and you are choosing to give a corporate entity your creative energy.”

And this is actually something that’s been bugging me a while, specifically regarding the relationship people have with corporately owned IP and how it being owned by a corporation doesn’t automatically invalidate it as a source of emotional investment or cultural symbolism. But quite honestly, that really deserves its own post, so I’m just going to put a pin in this that and say we’re done here.

Glad I got all that off my chest.

Do you have any tips on how to gain followers or popularity on tumblr. I have a newish account, and I'm just looking for any ideas. Thanks!

I do have a few. however like I said in my last ask, honestly as much as gaining followers involves working hard, it also involves luck. Anyways, here are my tips:

1.) Be Creative! -You have to give your followers a reason to follow your account and have content that makes it unique. Ofc reblogging stuff is an awesome feature of tumblr, but creating original posts is what will draw people’s attention towards your account. If you do what I do, and pick what “type” of content you want to post, ex: headcanons, incorrect quotes, artwork, etc, try to not copy any other accounts. Even though there are a lot of other incorrect pjo accounts out there, I try my very hardest not to copy them and to find different quotes to the best of my ability and knowledge.

2.) Be Consistent! -Personally, I feel consistency is pretty important, but I’m also a very organized person, so there’s that. Be consistent in what type of content you post, how active you are, your thoughts/ opinions etc. Idk how many of you guys have noticed, but I typically aim to post two incorrect quotes and one headcanon/one-shot/thought post a day, excluding Fridays and the weekend which tends to vary. I mean you obivously don’t have to be that organized but it would be best to not be totally active on day and then not post for like 6 months, lol. Again, people do take breaks, but let your followers know. Along with this, try being clear of what type of content/fandoms you will be posting of. I guess what I’m trying to say with this one is that don’t post say, PJO for posts for two weeks, then just move onto posting Harry Potter posts the next, etc. If you are a multi-fandom acc, or just post random stuff, make it clear to your followers. (This is just my personally opinion, however). Also, be consistent with your thoughts. Now I’m not saying you can’t change your thoughts or opinions, but say in one post you completely bash, apples, and go on a long rant about them, and then the next day, write this long post about how great they are. Another example would be say, shout outs. Don’t give a shoutout to an acc one day, and then the next just decide not to give it to the other. Personally, I don’t give shoutouts if people ask, mostly because I feel like it’s not fair unless I do literally everybody so… Idk, again this section is more of my own opinion.

3.) Find Something You Like and Work Hard! -Honestly your content should be stuff you truly love and find interesting. Don’t pick something just because you know you can get easy likes. I love incorrect quotes since I find them really funny, and trust me, it makes working on my tumblr 10,000 times more enjoyable since I love what type of content I am creating. As I have said before, as much as luck is involved with gaining followers, so is hard work. Ngl, some nights it takes me like 2 hours to find good quotes for two of my pages, however I rather spend that much time finding good, original quotes that really go with certain characters, than spend ¼ of the time and have “okayish” quotes.

4.) Do It Because You Love It! -Again, like many things, you shouldn’t make a tumblr acc or make posts because you want to get followers or likes. You should do it because you truly love what you are posting about and want to share you thoughts and content on it.

5.) Steer Clear of Drama/ Own Up to Your Mistakes! -Now personally, I have not been involved with fandom drama, (not that there’s really much in this fandom, thank god), but I have made mistakes on some of my posts, specifically one, I came off as just lazily associating a movie with a character because of their race, and there have been other times where I have got little details wrong, such as an event already happening, or the eye color of a major character. Now for the first one, some people didn’t agree with me, and I totally respect that, and kinda think it’s cool that they called me out on it I told them from where I was coming from, and was just generally glad to have a civilized convo about it. As to the latter, I owed up to my mistakes and fixed them. I think it’s important to not attack anyone if they don’t agree with you or point out a mistake.

6.) Express Yourself! -Honestly, I feel like your Tumblr should be an expression of yourself. Don’t try to be someone your not, just put yourself out there! You are what makes your Tumblr unique! This can simply be using your own humor, ideas, or personality. I mean, I like to think my Tumblr reflects who I am, but who knows.

7.) Use Tumblrs Features To Your Advantage! -Tumblr has so many great features that makes it stand out against other social media platforms. Drafts, queue, asks, and submissions, along with the option to make your own cite are just a few things that make Tumblr so interactive and special. Drafts are good for if you have inspiration for something but just don’t know it how to get it just right and want to work on it later, and queue, along with scheduled posts, are really good when you know you are busy and are going to be away but still want to post content. I honestly love asks and submissions so much because they allow your Tumblr to be a lot more immersive, and allows you to interact with your followers on a whole new level. Making your own cite can also be fun, however there’s kinda more of a side feature.

here’s a fan theory a certain portion of television history took place almost entirely inside the brain of a young autistic boy okay so first things first a couple days ago we released a version of this video that was wrong my understanding of the Tommy westphall universe hypothesis was just completely incorrect if you would like to watch that video for academic purposes you can click here or you can find a link in the description we are going to turn off comments on that video if you did write a comment we saved it we put it in a paste bin there is also a link to that paste bin in the doobly-doo okay now on to a version of this video that is hopefully correct for the next several weeks here on idea channel we’re gonna be doing something a little bit different every other week instead of taking a piece of popular culture and smashing it up against some academic or critical theory to see what happens we’re gonna talk about fan theories speculations about the ways of some of our favorite pieces of media may work even if it doesn’t really appear that way on the surface we’re gonna do five of them we’re gonna talk about Harry Potter Pokemon Star Wars probably dip at least a little bit into Final Fantasy Legend of Zelda and a few others the first fan theory we’re gonna talk about right now is really I think something special it’s a little old so it’s gonna take some explaining but I think it’s important because it’s paradigmatic of fan theories it hits all of the fan theory high notes it’s called the Tommy Westfall universe or the Tommy westphall universe hypothesis and it states that over 400 television shows and Counting all take place in the same universe the theory is defended thusly in 1988 the American television show st.

elsewhere with its snow globe and slow zoom and exposition suggesting Tommy has imagined six whole seasons of television and perhaps countless others provides the final piece for a puzzle many television fans would like to solve generally how can we imagine all or much of the media we love being somehow related somehow intertwined capable of interacting is there a pathway between Mulder and despite what if someone on the John Larroquette show influenced history in such a way that it made certain portions of Star Trek possible in the way that it's fun to see public figures you like interacting with one another on social media it's fun to consider how your favorite fictional universes may intersect or interact heck it's a whole genre of fan fiction it's even an incredibly popular video game with the point I don't think is that the Tommy westphall universe hypothesis or any other fan theory for that matter is correct is 100% and totally verifiable and we figured out a secret thing that's actually true about television and oppa bow before it's deductive completeness the point is that fan theories provide new ways to think with and act our favorite pieces of media and culture fan theories try to determine what noon or exciting situation can be reasonably wrung out of a story based on what already they're a good fan theory rearranges our reinterprets but doesn't recreate and append they allow us new ways to consider well-known often discussed popular and/or beloved media and they almost always meet whatever that media is on its own terms this approach has its pros and it's cons but most importantly it's fun for me fan theories are kind of like critical thinking popcorn this is why I wanted to start with Tommy Westfall are there people out there who believe unequivocally that the Tommy westphall universe hypothesis proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that over 400 television shows really and truly do exist in exactly the same universe that instead of it being a symptom of intertextuality resulting from purposeful cleverness sure but also a practical convenience actual accident and literal coincidence it proves a fundamental characteristic of Caroline in the city and the wire is that they could in fact be happening a mere train ride from one another inside a young boy's brain maybe and if so that's awesome but even Dwayne McDuffie himself followed his Proclamation that quote the last five minutes of st.
