Death Diving
Story Content and Summary - 5,821 words. Off-duty lifeguard Charlotte tries Norwegian death diving at a snowy national park. Drowning, arrhythmia, hypothermia, on-site resuscitation. 🏳️‍🌈
--
“How high is this?” Charlotte asked, peering down at the water. She was slowly unsnapping her coat. “Looks like the high dive.”
“Not sure.” Their friend Larkin stood next to her, peering down at the dark blue-green water. “Looks cold as fuck.”
“It’s beautiful, though,” Charlotte said.
“It’s giving award-winning nature documentary,” Larkin agreed.
“Is this a good idea, Charlotte?” Henry waited off to the side, hands on his hips. “It looks pretty far, and you said you’ve only tried this twice at the pool over the summer.”
“Yeah, Viola didn’t like us doing it. She said it encouraged the children to try it.” Charlotte shrugged and unzipped her coat. “She was right, so I didn’t argue with her. The lifeguards can’t be encouraging reckless behavior.”
“This is a legitimate sport in Norway,” Larkin reminded them. “Maybe you could get certified or something.”
“CPR, AED, sports medicine and death diving!” Charlotte laughed and shrugged out of her coat. Then she brushed the snow off the top of a nearby boulder before laying her coat there. She bent to untie her bootlaces.
“I haven’t seen ‘death diving’ in the university course catalog.” Henry walked over to Charlotte. Her nose and cheeks were pink with cold. “If you say this is fine, I trust you. You wanted me on that big ass rock near the bottom?”
Charlotte kicked off her boots and sat them by the boulder, stuffing her socks inside as she shivered. “Ugh, so cold! Yeah, back down the stairs and to that boulder we passed. Are you good to film from there? Larkin’s filming from up here.”
“The things I do for you,” Henry said, watching as she peeled her shirts over her head at once and cast the layers off on top of her coat. She had a purple sports bra on underneath. Her skin was already breaking out in goosebumps. He reached out and grasped her by the waist, pulling her close. “Be careful, okay? You can bail if it comes down to it. We won’t think any less of you.”
“He’s right,” Larkin said. They had their phone out and were snapping pictures of the drop. “We are mature enough to not fuck with you for not doing something we’re too scared to do ourselves.”
Charlotte tipped her head up to kiss him and he took advantage, slipping a hand into her loose, dark hair as he kissed her soft mouth. They’d been inseparable since first year English and had plans to move in together after graduation. Henry saw them married with kids some day. He let the kiss linger, his hands running up the cooling skin of her back.
Charlotte shivered and broke the kiss. “Mmm. Sorry, but I’m about to freeze! Larkin, after the jump, you’ll bring my clothes down?”
“I’ve got you, Charlie.”
“Alright, I’ll climb down.” Henry kissed her forehead. “I love you.”
“I love you, too.” Charlotte reached for the waistband of her pants. “God, it’s cold up here!”
“You’re the G.O.A.T., Charlie!” Larkin called out
“Polar bear club death diving,” Henry muttered to himself, shaking his head as he headed down the wooden steps. The breeze was brisk, with flurries floating by his face, but the view was gorgeous. Gray rock, dark evergreens, blankets of snow, and that dazzling water. Henry made it nearly to the bottom before he spotted a good spot to hop the handrail and climb out on the boulder Charlotte had identified.
Henry peeled off his gloves and crouched in the center of the rock. He took his phone out, looking up the rock face to the edge of the cliff. Charlotte was waiting there, having stripped completely naked. Even at that distance, he could see her strong body, thick thighs and snatched waist hewn from swimming and weight lifting. She raked her hand through her blowing hair and then waved at him.
Henry got the video ready on his phone and waved back.
Larkin shouted: “READY!”
He tapped the button and confirmed his phone was recording. “READY!”
“GO IN THREE—”
Charlotte took three steps back.
“—TWO, ONE!”
She ran toward the edge and, without hesitation, threw herself off the cliff. She looked like a superhero in flight at first, with her arms extended almost casually and one of her legs bent. Henry tried to follow her body as it plummeted, saw her arms pinwheel, but she was moving too fast for him to make out other details. What he did see was how hard she hit the water, more of a belly flop than the inverted vee shape she’d shown him on YouTube.
Henry cheered for her anyway, standing and pointing the phone toward the white ripples representing the spot where she’d gone in. He expected her to come up sputtering but happy, at which point they’d bundle her up and walk her back to the fire.
Henry waited, surprised when it took longer than he expected for her to come to the surface. Just as he felt nervous, he saw her come up. Instead of popping up like an excited cork, she floated to the surface, hair spreading out across the water and her limbs limp. She bobbed face down, pale and naked.
“Charlotte?” Henry shoved his phone in his pocket without remembering to stop the footage. “Charlie?! Charlotte!”
He heard Larkin shout something, and then Henry jerked into action, unzipping his coat and tearing it off. He made himself take the time to remove his boots, cursing as he struggled to get them off and painfully aware of time passing as she floated face down in the pool. “CHARLOTTE! FUCK!”
He ripped his pullover off, too, then dove clumsily into the water in his pants and long-sleeved shirt. Henry hit the icy water with a splash and gasped a shocked breath at the wrong time, filling his sinuses. He coughed and spat out the cold water, trying to make his limbs move and feeling his heart palpitate in his chest. Henry dog paddled over to Charlotte, then grasped her hair and her hip, his fingers already numb with cold as he fumbled with her body.
Henry forced himself to kick his sluggish legs as he turned her over, floating her on her back. What he saw frightened him; Charlotte was ghost pale and staring up at the sky with a strange and empty expression on her face. He was pretty certain she wasn’t breathing.
“Ch-Charlotte!” Henry wracked his brain for anything he’d ever heard from Charlotte about water rescue. “Charlotte!”
If you can do it without drowning, you give the victim five breaths in the water. I did that once, and the guy woke up sputtering!
Henry moved his left hand under her neck and used his right to push her wet hair out of her face. He pinched her nose with his right hand and then hunched over her. He was breathing hard, from cold and exertion and fear, but he sucked in a deep breath and covered her white lips with his. His exhale rounded out her cheeks, and he darted his eyes toward her ashen chest to see if it rose. It was hard to tell between the gentle rocking motion of the water and Henry’s kicks beneath the surface. He’d have to get them both out soon; he was having a hard time keeping himself afloat, and every time the wind cut across the top of the pool he shuddered.
Henry let her exhale and gave her another breath, taking less time between subsequent breaths. He thought her chest was rising, though he found there was some resistance. Not that he knew what this was supposed to feel like. He just knew that she was scaring him; she felt and looked like a cold, dead thing, with her lips slack and her eyes lifeless and far away.
The fifth breath didn’t miraculously revive her, and Henry broke the kiss of life with a gasp. “C-come on, babe… Get you out…”
Henry awkwardly wrapped his arm around her chest and leaned her head against his shoulder, then started one-arm swimming for the shore. Larkin was on the shore, taking off their coat and boots before wading into the pool and meeting Henry just as his icy feet caught up against the bottom. Together, they towed Charlotte to shore.
“Lay her on my coat!” Larkin shouted. “And then we can put hers on top!”
“She’s not b-breathing!”
“My phone’s just over there and I’ve already got 911 on the line. I’ll tell them!”
Henry could barely feel his feet as they dragged Charlotte’s limp body out and on top of Larkin’s coat, spread out in the snow. Charlotte’s head hung backward as they maneuvered her, wet hair swinging. Henry all but collapsed beside her as Larkin draped her coat over her like a blanket, then ran over to their cell phone left on a nearby rock.
“Charlotte…” Henry reached for her, hoping she would wake up now that she was out of the water. The vision she presented dashed that hope immediately.
Charlotte looked like a corpse, pale with cold, completely still, eyes partially open and her lips turning purple. Henry, stiff with cold, pressed his fingers into her neck, trying to feel for a pulse. When he touched her, her head tipped to the side and water dribbled from the side of her mouth.
“I CAN’T TELL!” Henry shouted, turning her face up toward him and then pressing his fingers hard into her throat again. “SHIT! LARKIN! Oh no, NO, I don’t think she has a pulse!”
“Hey!” Larkin dropped to their knees at Charlotte’s other side, laying their phone down on the coat beneath her. “The operator says you have to do CPR! An ambulance is coming, and a park ranger, but—”
“Okay!” Henry forced himself up onto his knees and leaned over Charlotte, his hands shaking from cold and anxiety as he struggled to recall what exactly he was supposed to do.
“I can do the breaths. He says we need to do those since she drowned!” Larkin was shivering, too, but they sat the phone down by Charlotte’s head and tapped the speaker button. “We’re ready!”
“You need to tip her head back to open her airway,” a deep voice said from the phone. Larkin quickly complied, hands on her forehead and chin to tip it back and extend her neck. “Then pinch her nose, cover her mouth with yours to make a seal, and give her two breaths in quick succession. You want to see her chest rise.”
Henry watched as Larkin breathed for his girlfriend, her cheeks puffing up and her chest rising, dusky breasts rising and falling twice. Then he reached out and pushed her coat down toward her pelvis. Henry felt like he might break into a thousand panicked pieces.
“Once you’ve done that,” the operator continued, “you need to do thirty chest compressions. Find her bottom rib and follow it to the center of her chest. You want to put the heel of your hand on the bottom third of her sternum, her breastbone. Stack your hands and lace your fingers. Make certain your shoulders are over your hands.”
Henry quickly traced his fingers over her soft skin and found his mark. He called out: “I did it, I p-push now, right?”
“Yes. Two inches. Then come up.”
Henry pushed down once, then twice. The second time he thought he’d achieved two inches, with her ribcage sinking and her belly rounding. “Jesus, it looks like I’m breaking her chest!”
“It’s okay, sir. Two inches. Count out loud with me as you do compressions. One, two, three…”
“…four, five, six…” Henry found he felt a little warmer with the movement, though he’d rather her be breathing and him freezing if that was an option. Larkin was holding her head in place, but her body moved along with the chest compressions. Huffs of air escaped her blue lips and her ribcage creaked beneath his hands. When he forced his straight arms into her chest, her shoulders shrugged. When he recoiled, he felt her ribcage spring back to the proper shape. The sensation sparked nausea in the pit of his stomach, and he gasped out: “Thirty!”
As Larkin breathed for her again, Henry relaxed his arms and rubbed her chest. “Come on, Charlotte! BREATHE!”
Larkin’s air sighed out of her, and Henry quickly found his mark again and rolled his shoulders over his hands. He counted loudly as he thrust himself down into her chest. Time seemed somehow both sped up and slowed down. He was thinking a little more clearly now and was even more frightened, thinking of the seconds and minutes lost while they got her out and the operator explained what to do. He understood that chest compressions circulated oxygenated blood. He didn’t know why she had drowned so quickly, or if it was possible to survive what had happened, but he wanted to be the reason she had a chance.
“…twenty-eight, twenty-nine, thirty!” The operator had stopped counting with him, but he spoke up as Larkin leaned in to cover Charlotte’s mouth with their own.
“A park ranger with an AED is headed in your direction. He’s got an ATV and expects to be with you in five minutes. DO NOT stop CPR unless it becomes too dangerous for you to continue.”
“One, two, three…”
“We’re not going to stop,” Larkin said, incredulous. “We might freeze to death out here, but otherwise we wouldn’t stop! Fuck!”
“…eighteen, nineteen… just a thing he has to say, Larkin! Twenty-one, twenty-two…” Charlotte made a gurgling sound when his hands plunged particularly deep, but the look in her eyes hadn’t changed when he glanced at her face. “Thirty!”
“Perform two more rounds of compressions and breaths, and then I would like the two of you to switch positions,” the operator said as Larkin bent over her for rescue breathing.
Larkin gave Charlotte a second breath and then said: “Yes! We can do that!”
“One, two, three…” Henry focused on the way the heel of his hand dug into her sternum. Two inches must be enough to press her sternum into her heart. This would express blood from the muscle. He came up off of her, aware again of her ribcage springing back. He envisioned new blood being drawn up into her heart. If he or Larkin kept doing this until someone who could do more arrived…
Soon, it was time for Larkin to give her breaths again. Henry gasped in his own deep breaths of cold air, his eyes on her body as she swelled with Larkin’s breath. There was a dark red mark now between her breasts. Henry placed his hands in the middle of the bruise and forced her sternum down.
Pop!
“Shit!” he exclaimed. He didn’t stop chest compressions, but he was gasping now instead of counting. He would swear that he felt something give when he’d pushed into her. Chest compressions took a lot of effort, but it looked like he was easily crushing her, her chest caving in and her abdomen swelling in rhythmic waves.
“I think he just broke her rib!” Larkin exclaimed.
“Um, it’s okay, I haven’t stopped!” Henry forced out. “Uh… nineteen, twenty, twenty-one… We switch after this, Larkin! Oh… Twenty-four, twenty-five, twenty-six, twenty-seven, twenty-eight, twenty-nine, thirty!”
Henry scooted a few inches to the side and reached for her head as Larkin released it, almost colliding with her in his urgency. Disturbed and disappointed that her lips still felt cold, Henry covered them with his warm mouth and filled her lungs with the hot air. He broke the seal long enough to let his gifted air escape, then gave her a second breath.
Larkin had already started chest compressions by the time Henry pulled back from Charlotte. He watched them work for a few seconds, though he knew he wasn’t qualified to evaluate their compressions. They looked deep enough and fast enough to him, her stomach rounding with each thrust and her feet swaying side to side, sticking out from beneath the coat. Henry reached down and pulled the coat over her pale feet.
“…fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, eighteen…”
Henry scooted back up to her head, both drawn to and repulsed by her face. She was so pale she looked gray, with blue lips and shadows around her open eyes. He’d never seen a person who looked like this, not someone who wasn’t about to be buried. At least at a funeral home, they attempted to make a person look like what you remembered of them when they were alive.
The thought made his own eyes prick with tears.
“Don’t die,” he whispered, keenly aware of Larkin’s countdown to thirty. “Please, please, please…”
“…thirty!”
A seal over cold lips. His cheeks bulging, then hers. Her breasts rising and falling. Her nipples dark against her bloodless skin. Skin mottled and bruised between her breasts.
Larkin’s own cold fingers interlaced over her heart, and they resumed pumping the muscle for her now that she, apparently, couldn’t do it herself.
“Huh, huh, huh…” Air, forced out of Charlotte’s still lungs.
“…seven, eight, nine…”
Henry smoothed her hair, cold and almost hard as it was. Her hair lay clumped up and clinging to her skin, nothing like her usual shiny mane. Her head rocked back and forth as Larkin pumped her chest, blank eyes drawing a fateful trail back and forth across the sky. The breeze picked up, and both he and Larkin shuddered. Charlotte, of course, remained senseless.
Another gurgling noise escaped her, followed by a small amount of water spurting up between her blue lips. Henry turned her head to the side and called out: “Charlotte?” Another gurgle, followed by a splash of water onto the coat beneath her.
“Thirty! I think she just vomited some water up!” Larkin said. “You have to give—”
“Breathe, Charlie!” Henry almost shouted, before he turned her face toward him and forced himself to pinch her nose and give her another breath.
Need to calm down. Calm down. Charlotte…
A second breath, and then he wiped the back of his hand across his eyes. It came away wet.
“One, two, three, four…”
Henry climbed stiffly to his numb feet and staggered over to the boulder, where he found his coat and dragged it down, hurrying back and dropping it on top of her coat. He quickly crouched beside her to give her two more rescue breaths. Breaths on land were easier than they’d been out in the water, but the action felt so strange to him. In another context, it might have been hot. His lips on hers, the intimacy of a shared breath. Her body responding.
As Larkin started the next round of compressions, Henry straightened out his coat, pulling it up just below her breasts. It worried him that her core was still so exposed to the cold air, but he was afraid to add a thick layer between Larkin’s hands and Charlotte’s skin. Instead, he pulled her limp arms against her sides and tucked her cold hands underneath the coat.
“…twenty, twenty-one…” Larkin sounded breathless now, their face a mask of effort and worry.
“I think… Can you do one more round and then we’ll switch?” Henry asked, pinching her nose in preparation for thirty.
“Thirty! Yes!” Larkin gasped.
Henry gripped her jaw, holding her mouth open and then making a seal with his lips. Two more warm breaths. Her head rocked as Larkin started chest compressions again. Henry leaned down and pressed his lips to her cold forehead, his eyes closed for several seconds, until he pulled back and shook himself. He moved down her body until he was face-to-face with Larkin, ready to take over when it was time.
Larkin, Henry realized, was crying, tears rolling down their face as they finished up the set and quickly leaned over to give Charlotte air. Her breasts rose unnaturally, and then it was time for Henry to fix his hands on her sternum and roll his shoulders over the top.
“One, two, three…” Charlotte emitted a hoarse growling sound, but just as it was when she’d coughed up the water, she still stared half-lidded into nothing. Her head lolled to the side.
“I don’t understand how she drowned so fast!” Larkin exclaimed hoarsely. Their teeth chattered as soon as they stopped speaking, hands trembling as they turned her face toward the sky. Her head moved loosely on her neck. “Or how it got so bad… you g-got to her! She should have coughed some water up and we would have hauled her to the fire to warm up, and oh, God!”
“Thirty! Breathe!”
Larkin sniffled, frozen in place. Henry shouted: “LARKIN!”
They flinched and quickly pressed their mouth to Charlotte’s. As the second breath slipped from her mouth and Henry started pumping her chest again, he realized he heard a distant small motor. “One, two, three, four… Is that the ranger? COME ON!”
“How will they get down here?! How’d they get up there?!” Larkin exclaimed. “Is there an access road?”
“…eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen, fifteen…” Henry couldn’t pay attention to what he hoped was help on the way. He had to focus; he didn’t want the reason she didn’t make it to be that he slacked off because he heard help coming from who knew however far away. Instead, his eyes dropped to her chest, where his hands were stacked so that the heel of his bottom hand thrust into the correct spot.
What I hope is the correct spot. If you make it, you’re going to give me a lesson, okay? Please, please, please don’t die…
“Continue CPR,” the 9-1-1 operator said. “Make certain you compress her chest two inches and come up completely each time. That’s a good place.”
“Thirty!” Henry called out, but Larkin was standing up and shouting something incoherent. Henry lunged for Charlotte’s head, roughly opening her airway and pinching off her nose. He blew two hard breaths into her, the air spluttering out between them, and then quickly swiveled back to her chest. Her breasts wobbled each time he pushed down on her chest, and her nipples were hard from the cold. The coat slipped sideways off of her stomach, and he watched her belly bow as he compressed her ribcage. “One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight…”
“HERE!” Larkin screamed, voice breaking. “Down here! HURRY!”
“…fifteen, sixteen, seventeen…”
They dropped down beside Charlotte and opened her airway. “There’s a ranger coming down the stairs on foot! They’ve got bags!”
“Do not stop CPR!” the operator said, startling Henry, who’d forgotten about him.
“…twenty-seven, twenty-eight, twenty-nine, thirty!”
As Larkin bent to give Charlotte mouth-to-mouth, Henry glanced up. Sure enough, a man was hauling ass down the stairs, carrying what looked like a couple of bags and a backpack. Henry tore his eyes away and started chest compressions again, trying not to think about how cold and tired he was, or how cold she was.
“One, two, three, four…”
The man’s boots crunched in the snow as he ran from the base of the stairs over to where Larkin and Henry had been trying to resuscitate Charlotte. He dropped his bags and crouched beside her, asking: “What happened? What’s her name?”
“…thirteen, fourteen, fifteen…”
“We were filming her, Charlotte, doing this… Norwegian free diving,” Larkin said, their voice quiet. “She hit the water and I don’t think she was conscious after that.”
“…twenty-six—”
“Okay, pause compressions so I can do a pulse check,” the ranger said, tugging off his gloves. Henry lifted his hands, breathing hard. The other man dug his fingers into her neck and leaned close over her face, tipping his head to the side. Ten seconds passed, and he sat upright, saying: “No breath, no pulse. Continue CPR while I get the AED prepped.”
Larkin was breathing for her before the ranger finished speaking.
“I will stay on the line until EMS arrives. There is an ambulance crew coming up to the trailhead,” the 9-1-1 operator said. “They are on foot.”
Henry rolled his shoulders over his hands, pushing hard down into her chest. “One, two, three…”
“I have a victim who has drowned and two others who may be hypothermic,” the ranger said. “Prepping the AED now.”
He dragged the smaller bag closer to his legs and unzipped it, pulling out a red and white AED, a packet, and a small towel.
“Don’t stop,” the ranger said. He was dressed in warm clothing in shades of brown and green. “I’m going to work around you.”
The ranger rubbed her chest with the towel, though Henry was pretty sure her skin was no longer wet. Then he tore open the packet and dumped out AED pads. Henry kept up chest compressions, though he watched as the ranger flipped a switch on the side of the AED.
“APPLY PADS AND PLUG IN THE CONNECTOR!”
“…twenty-five, twenty-six, twenty-seven, twenty-eight, twenty-nine, thirty!” Henry kept his hands in place while Larkin gave her breaths and the ranger peeled the paper backing off the first pad. He barely caught his own breath before he began thrusting his hands hard into her chest again. The ranger applied the first pad above Charlotte’s right breast, then peeled the backing off the second. Henry didn’t waver, forcing her ribcage down and letting it recoil, the motion sending rolling waves down her abdomen. The ranger applied the second pad on the left, below her breast and to the side. Then he plugged the yellow plastic connector into the AED.
“ANALYZING HEART RHYTHM. DO NOT TOUCH PATIENT!”
“Stop compressions!” the ranger called out. “Don’t touch her!”
Henry raised his hands.
“ANALYZING RHYTHM. SHOCK ADVISED! CHARGING. DO NOT TOUCH PATIENT.” The device emitted a loud, high-pitched sound.
“Both of you scoot back!” the ranger commanded. “You can’t touch her when it delivers the shock.”
Larkin and Henry both scooted back, hands in the air and eyes on Charlotte’s limp, pale body.
“Please, Charlie,” Henry whispered.
“PRESS THE SHOCK BUTTON!” the AED commanded, and a yellow rectangle on the top of the device began to flash.
The ranger glanced at both of them and then pressed the button. Charlotte flinched, a small movement centered in her chest that traveled subtlely down her limbs. Immediately, the ranger moved closer to Charlotte and pressed his hands to the mottled skin of her chest.
“SHOCK DELIVERED. CONTINUE CPR.”
“One, two, three…” the ranger intoned. Henry sagged. He hadn’t been sure what to expect, exactly, but it wasn’t this. The ranger looked much more professional than either Henry or Larkin had, most of his energy going to precise, deep compressions. Her body shook each time he pressed into her, breasts quivering, stomach rolling. The compressions made a soft thumping sound as his hands thrust into her sternum. Henry was shivering again, and his bare feet in the snow were alternatively cold and numb.
The ranger hit thirty compressions, and Henry quickly crawled over to her head and sealed his mouth to her cool skin, blowing into her lungs and making her chest rise twice. He held her head in place while the ranger resumed chest compressions. Her head wanted to wobble in his hands, but he kept it steady.
“Her eyes aren’t as open,” he whispered. No one responded, the only other sound the ranger’s steady counting.
“…five, six, seven, eight, nine…”
“She drowned instantly,” Larkin said abruptly. They were sitting a couple of feet away, arms wrapped around their legs. Henry felt a frisson of concern, noting that Larkin’s fingers and lips looked like they were turning blue like Charlotte’s. “I don’t understand…”
“P-put my pullover on, Larkin,” Henry admonished . “It’s on the b-boulder… You’re t-turning blue…”
“…twenty, twenty-one, twenty-two…”
Henry was looking down at Charlotte again, though he heard Larkin rise and stumble over to the large rock where Henry had been standing earlier. When they came back, they sat Henry’s gloves on the coat by Charlotte’s head.
“…thirty!” the ranger called out, then reached over to drag one of his bags closer. As Henry gave Charlotte mouth-to-mouth, he heard the ranger say: “Cold water like that can cause arrhythmias. I saw something similar happen two years ago.”
Henry thought about the heart palpitations he’d felt when he jumped into the cold water. It was like his heart had tried to stop multiple times before lurching back into a fast but otherwise normal rhythm. She’d fallen from a great height, then experienced that cold shock from beneath the surface. He wondered if she’d been conscious enough to understand what was happening to her.
I hope not, Charlie, he thought sadly. Then, he wondered: Did the person from two years ago make it?
Henry was afraid to ask.
“…nine, ten, eleven, twelve…”
Henry slipped his gloves onto his stiff fingers, then flexed them to see if he could still properly use his hands. Larkin suddenly appeared at his side again with his socks and boots.
“Your t-toes are blue,” Larkin stammered, and to Henry’s surprise they helped him put on his socks as he kneeled next to Charlotte, waiting until it was time to breathe for her again.
“…twenty-six, twenty-seven…”
Charlotte made another growling sound like she had earlier, startling Henry into planting his hands on both sides of her head and staring wide-eyed down at her. She didn’t take a breath, however, so when the ranger called out his last compression, Henry quickly pinched her nose closed and leaned down to give her two breaths.
Then Henry dropped onto his ass and reached for one of his boots, fumbling clumsily with them as his eyes burned with the tears he was trying to keep at bay.
“…five, six, seven, eight…”
Henry struggled to get his feet into the boots, let alone lace them. He finally left his boots untied, loose on his feet as he rolled over and back onto his knees. It was time to breathe for Charlotte again. He used a hand under her neck to open her airway, pinched her nose closed as the ranger called out “thirty!” and felt the huff of forced air against his face. Her lips were cold and dry when he pressed his mouth to hers, the angle not quite right as he blew into her. He had to expel air even harder to compensate, and when he broke the seal, their mouths made a “pphhhtttbht!” sound.
“One, two, three…”
“Huh, huh, huh, huh…”
Henry, still leaning over her, looked down at the ranger’s hands buried between Charlotte’s breasts. The depression of her ribcage looked even starker from this angle, and the soft tissue of her breasts shook with each hard compression. When Henry picked his head up, he could see her trim stomach bulge out with each pump of her chest.
“…twenty-five, twenty-six, twenty-seven—”
“ANALYZING RHYTHM! DO NOT TOUCH PATIENT!”
Henry and the ranger both lurched backward, raising their hands. Charlotte’s body was utterly still, which he found even more disturbing than watching her body move from the force of the chest compressions. Her head had tipped over when he released it. Her eyes, open to slits, stared at his knees.
“SHOCK ADVISED. CHARGING. DO NOT TOUCH PATIENT!”
Larkin kneeled a few feet away, their own face pale as the device let out a loud, high-pitched whine.
“Switch with me after the shock,” the ranger said. Henry nodded.
“PRESS THE SHOCK BUTTON! DO NOT TOUCH PATIENT! PRESS THE SHOCK BUTTON!”
“No one touch her!” the ranger called out, reaching for the flashing button. “Administering the shock now!”
He pressed the button, and Charlotte jerked. Henry knew what to expect this time, so he was already moving toward her when the AED called out: “SHOCK DELIVERED. CONTINUE CPR.”
Charlotte made a squeaking noise when he started chest compressions, making his eyes fly to her face even as he pumped her chest. “One, two, three… CHARLOTTE! BREATHE! Seven, eight…”
“Try to stay calm if you can,” the ranger said. He was pulling smaller items out of his bag, a red plastic case and a thermometer. Larkin moved to kneel on the opposite side of Charlotte, near her head.
“…thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, sixteen—” Charlotte inhaled. The sound was small, barely audible between Henry’s countdown and the rustling sounds of the ranger. Then she coughed wetly, and Henry jerked his hands off her skin, exclaiming: “Charlotte?!”
The ranger dropped whatever he was doing and pressed his fingers into the side of her throat.
“Take another breath, Charlie!” Henry exclaimed. He scooted down and cupped her cheek. “Come on, I know you can hear me!”
“She has a pulse!” the ranger said, sounding relieved. “Take a breath now, sweetheart!”
Charlotte wheezed, then drew a shallow and rattling breath. Her eyelids fluttered and her chest heaved irregularly. The ranger turned back to his bags, quickly rummaging through until he found a foil packet and a knit hat.
“Just keep breathing, Charlie!” Henry reached down and rested his hand gently on the bruises their efforts had left on her skin. His hand rose and fell with her increasingly stronger breaths. The ranger opened the packet and unfurled a metallic blanket, which he draped over Charlotte. Henry pulled his hand free and reached for the hat. Larkin carefully lifted her head, and Henry tugged the hat down over her cold, half-dried hair.
“Mmm…” Charlotte moaned, her eyelids lifting halfway. Her dark eyes rolled, but he was relieved to see they had life in them now, however disoriented she was.
“Charlie, I love you,” Henry said, leaning down to kiss her cheek. “Larkin, too. We’re both here. You’re going to be okay.”
“Patient has a pulse, labored breathing, and is semi-conscious after two shocks from the AED,” the ranger called out toward the phone. Then he turned back to his bags. “Hey, I have blankets for you two...”
“Uh, okay. Great,” Henry said, after several seconds of delay. “Charlotte?”
Her listless gaze drifted toward his face, focusing briefly on him before she moaned again and closed her eyes. Henry felt the energy drain out of him, relief bleeding him dry. He weakly propped himself up on his elbow beside her, tears finally spilling down his cheeks. The ranger shook out another metallic blanket and draped it around his shoulders.
Henry reached down, working his hand beneath the blanket and coats until found her cold hand. He squeezed her fingers, his eyes shifting to her face. She still looked unwell, and he was worried about the quality of her breathing, but to his immense relief, she no longer looked like a corpse. Larkin reached in and swept a strand of her hair out of her face, tucking it behind her ear.
A few seconds passed, and then Charlotte’s fingers twitched in Henry’s grasp.
“There you are,” he whispered, his voice thick with emotion.

Also, there are probably more great fics that I’ve probably missed and this list is definitely not exhaustive. I only included ones I’ve read but if there are new sports-related fics I haven’t read yet, apologies if I fail to include your fic. My memory for some fics are also murky and I am definitely not sporty 😅 so maybe I got the wrong sport tagged (in this case, let me know). Enjoy Jock JK! 🎯

bikini bottoms (m)
having a job as a lifeguard on the beach has you doing many things you’ve never done before. stopping fights between a 5 year old and a seagull, spending hours trying to dig a jeep out of a 4 foot hole some doofus had dug, and lastly, giving jung hoseok a blowjob.
Tumblr media
(gif from weheartit)
GENRE: e2l, smut, lifeguard!au
WORDS: 2753
MEMBER: jung hoseok
WARNINGS: really only a blowjob, implied smut, possible part two, hoseok is a fuckboy, mention of sexual harassment, there’s banter in this and hoseok slaps yn’s ass, but it’s all playful!!
The wooden chair of the lifeguard tower creaks as you sit down, as if releasing a heavy sigh after a long night of no usage, now to be sat on at the fresh time of 10 am- the start of your work day. From above, the people now rolling in to the beach start appearing, encouraged by the sunny sky and beautiful weather to get on their swimsuits and hop in the clear water.
This was an everyday thing for you- and you loved it. The fresh air seemingly always in the atmosphere, tinted by the salty smell of the sea, the sun, the sand- everything. It was the perfect way to start your day, and the perfect day to end it. Your mornings could never go wrong at the beach.
From the corner of your eye, you can see the outline of a rather familiar figure making his way towards the lifeguard tower, a frown naturally forming onto to your lips.
Well, except for one thing.
Meet Jung Hoseok, the heartthrob of the beach. Not gonna lie, the only reason you haven't filed a complaint for him to get fired was because almost half of the people who come to the beach are teenagers who want a piece of him. Not just him- his dick. If he did evidently get fired, then less people would actually come, meaning less money for you. Yes, you have thought this through before. And you prefer money.
"______!"
You sigh, not wanting to interact with this sex machine at least until you've had your third cup of coffee. Lazily, you respond: "Yes, Hoseok?"
He smiles when you make eye contact with him, his gaze pure and playful. "You left your shoes at the shed! I wanted to bring them to you!" A hand covers his eyes from the rays of the sun, and he lifts his other hand to reveal your pair of dark blue flip-flops hanging off his middle finger.
"I know, Hoseok," you reply. "I leave them on purpose. I don't like the feeling of shoes on a beach." You rake a hand through your hair, your strands getting blown into your eyes from the slight wind.
"Well, I brought them, so you might as well wear it." He smirks as he waves the shoes around mockingly. From afar, the sound of a baseline is audible, hinting that the car of the boy-crazy girls have arrived.
You scoff. "Just throw them up or something. Don't you know how? Weren't you captain of your basketball team?"
Hoseok laughs, a sound that- for some reason- causes your stomach to flurry. "First of all, I was not captain and I barely played since the coach despised me. Secondly, I will not throw these up, and you will come down to get them."
High-pitched laughter rings through your ears, causing your mood to already turn negative. You roll your eyes. "Don't you have some girls to fuck? I can practically hear them calling your name already in their squeaky ass voices like some fourth graders."
At this, the raven haired boy pouts, slight wind brushing his bangs into his eyes. "Come on, I'm trying to be nice, princess."
You bit your lip. The sun was pretty hot today, the wood burning up below your feet. Maybe you should put some comfort between your skin the the fiery hot chair. "Alright fine." You stand up and turn around, going down the ladder one foot at a time.
Little did you know, Hoseok was not focused at all on giving your shoes back. After he saw you climbing down the little wooden stubs, his eyes were trained on your ass, naturally pushed out each step. Once stepping onto the grainy smooth sand, you swiftly grab your shoes from his hand, pulling him out of his trance.
You bend down to slide the soft material onto your feet and shake your head. "God, making me do all this extra work for nothing-"
A hard smack to your ass cuts you off mid-sentence. Jung fucking Hoseok. Almost breaking your neck from looking up so fast, you notice that the human incarnated form of aggravation is not in front of you like he was a second ago. He's halfway up the ladder.
"Hoseok!" You cry, shocked by how he slapped your ass and how he climbed the goddamn thing so fast. "The hell are you doing?"
"Getting away from those girls." He says as he reaches for another slab of woob. "Jesus, you fuck them once, and they get all attached."
The group of girls have already set up their towel on the pale sand, one of them already oiling themselves up. He fucked them all? Like.. at once or all tog- You huff a breath of air. You are not going to be thinking about that right now.
"Not all at once, of course," He calls out, which makes you wonder if you were thinking out loud. "Although it definitely wasn't individual." Hoseok talks with a sly tone, raising a brow at you.
Looking back at the girls, you see them talking amongst themselves. However, they are all turning their heads, looking for one thing- the thing that's sitting at the top of the lifeguard tower.
Realization hits you like a truck. "Jung Hoseok, you are not leaving me with those maniacs."
He snorts, raking a hand through his hair. "Yes you are! I got you your shoes, do me this favor."
You could not believe the audacity of this man. He practically forced you to take the shoes, and now as a 'favor' you had to deal with those hoes who you only wish would get a grip of self worth so they stop chasing after that man? What a great way to start your day.
"Oh my fucking God." Anger is flowing through your veins, taking over your thoughts and actions, and you no longer can feel your sanity. "This is not a fucking favor, this is you manipulating me for you sake, so fuck you slutty bitch!"
The sand is wet and warm as you roll it into a ball, turning around and chucking it at Hoseok’s head. You barely miss his slim face and hit his neck, but still doing damage by getting stuck to his skin. "That's for slapping my ass, asshole."
You miss the way he eyes your leaving figure up and down after wiping the sand off his neck. Oh, he just loved messing with you.
-----
Swimsuits are tight. They curve around one's body perfectly, almost painfully, used for swimming or other water activities. They're actually pretty comfortable, if you do say so yourself, and you take pride in knowing the way your body looks in the bright red one piece of the lifeguard apparel.
But wet swimsuits are a whole 'nother story. Wet swimsuits are the devil themselves. They're sticky and distressing and tight, feeling like hell in spandex form suffocating your body and not letting you get the blood you need. Not to mention they take almost an hour to take off.
"God, can't I just take it off?" You whisper to no one in particular. The pad of your thumb scrolls through Instagram, images of other people's picture-perfect lives on view to the world. Feeling itchy, you continuously adjust your swimsuit, trying to find some relief for the discomfort you currently felt.
Sounds from the door break the much appreciated silent atmosphere you were miraculously blessed with, of course broken by the one and only  Jung Hoseok. "Help me," he quickly says, slamming the door of the hut shut. There's still some sand stuck on his bare upper chest from where you've hit him.
You scoff and look back down to your screen. "Help yourself, Jung. You've clearly been doing that the whole day, anyways." You squeeze your eyes shut as memories from earlier in the day came rushing at you.
The girls approached you right after you walked away from throwing the sand at Hoseok, ignoring the way he screamed your name repetitively. Not only did they waste your time by asking you where Hoseok was, but once you wouldn't let them go up the lifeguard tower, it got into a heated argument and one girl had the audacity to throw you into the fucking water.
She was strong, not gonna lie, but over what? A simple fuck? From the man who probably has a little tic-tac anyways? Oh, how you went off on them.
"They, uh-" Hoseok's voice slightly cracks, and he's talking in a slight panicked way, fast and mumbled. "They sort of attacked me- harassed me."
You look up. "They harassed you? You mean like... harassed harassed or harassed harassed?" He just blinks and shyly points to his trunks.
"Harassed harassed." Your eyes trail down, and the little bulge in Hoseok's pants momentarily shocks you.
"Holy shit, Hoseok."
Eyes wide, he nods. "I know. They fucking went after me once I got down the tower, so I ran here as fast as I could." When his breathing begins to slow, Hoseok moves to stand next to the big wooden table in the center of the room. "God, crazy bitches."
"And you got turned on from that?"
Not from them, he thinks to himself. But he wasn't about to let you know that he was already having his senses heightened after he saw your wet figure in the water.
"Well not exactly. It's kind of, just, you know," he sighs in defeat and shakes his bangs.
"And you want me to help... how?"
Hoseok stares at you, saying nothing. And you realize it.
"No, Hoseok, no way." You click your phone off and set it on the armrest of the wooden chair. "I'm not gonna sleep with you."
He lets out a frustrated groan. "I'm not asking you to sleep with me, just help me deal with this!" His hair comes out slightly ruffled after he rakes his hand through it. "I can't walk around with a fucking tent in my shorts around everybody. There's children!"
It takes all your self control and dignity to not look down at his crotch once again, for the outline is becoming more and more visible as the seconds roll on. And you've got to admit, he doesn't look as small as you thought. "Why should I do that? You've basically ruined my whole day by tricking me into getting down from the tower so I had to deal with those psychos. Not to mention, you slapped my ass and one of them threw me in the goddamn water!"
"Okay, well," Hoseok tries to counter argue. "You... threw sand at me." He knew he wasn't convincing anyone with that. "Please ________ just help me. I swear I'll make it up to you."
You think. You actually think about it. Blame it on the fact that the Jung Hoseok is practically begging you for it. An amused idea runs through your mind as you think of all the things you could make Hoseok do for you, all the embarrassment that would come with it, all the revenge you would finally get. Without saying anything, you make eye contact with his desperate form and stand up, walking towards him. His eyes widen.
"Woah, you're actually gonna-"
"Stop talking." You turn the both of you around and push him onto the chair, kneeling down in front of him. Hoseok is so stunned he doesn't even realize he bumped your phone off the armrest and onto the sandy floor. His breath gets stuck in his throat at the sight of you on your knees, ready to take him in your mouth. You run both of your hands up his thighs before slowly outlining his cock lightly with your fingertips.
"Jesus Christ," he breaks underneath your touch. He couldn't believe he was gonna get sucked off by you, the girl who's hated him since they first met. It was unbelievably hot. He sucks in a harsh breath when you squeeze his clothed dick. "Please don't fucking tease me, ______"
His length hardens in your hand when you begin to sensually rub your palm against it. You would be lying if you said that you weren't even the slightest bit turned on. "Patience, Hoseok," you grin. "God, you're so desperate for me, huh?"
A whimper. Jung Hoseok fucking whimpers.
Dominant, cocky Hoseok, just whimpered. For you. And it went straight to your core.
Rubbing your thighs together, you opt for some relief from the tingling you felt. Hoping to distract yourself, you toy with the waistband of his swim trunks for a few seconds before finally pulling them down his thighs.
It was much different than you would've ever imagined. In the past whenever you thought about his dick, which was rarely ever, you obviously knew he was packing some size considering the amount of times he slept around. However, seeing it in person has outdid all of your previous expectations. His dripping cock had length to it, but the thickness was shocking. It was unbelievably thick.
"Fuck," you whisper. You wrap your hand around the base of his cock, your fingertips barely able to touch each other. You give it a light squeeze before slowly sliding up.
Hoseok is watching your every move, his hands forming fists by his side to keep him from thrusting himself into your grip. "_____- shit." He leans his head back, clenching his jaw as you spread his precum around his length, making sure to coat every spot with his juice. The sight of his throat bobbing up and down makes your eyes flutter. God, why is he so hot right now.
"Your so naughty, Hoseok." You lightly trail your tongue up his cock, keeping your eyes on him the whole way up. Wrapping your lips around the head, Hoseok whimpers once again when you begin to suck on the swollen tip. He can't hold back anymore and snakes his hand into your hair, pulling at the roots while letting out deep groans.
When you take all of him in one go, he slowly pushes down on your head so that his tip meets the back of your throat. The sound of you quietly gagging sends him into overdrive, his body shaking from the pleasure. You grasp at his thighs, clawing your nails into his skin. "______, please please please, fuck."
Remembering a tip your friend once gave you, you hollow your cheeks and suck, continuously bobbing your head up and down. Obviously, your friend knows what she's doing, basing off of the way Hoseok lets out a loud vocal moan and thrusts wildly into your mouth. You've never seen him like this- so unhinged and in a way almost pathetically desperate. It was turning you on beyond belief.
He's close and it's obvious, sweat dripping down the side of neck, letting out a string of curses and swears as he gets closer to his high.
"Fuck, _____ don't stop, p-please don't stop." His voice sends a rush of warmth to your core, and his other hand releases the grip on the armrest to join the other in pulling your hair. Both of his hands are grabbing at your head, and you move even faster, giving his throbbing cock a couple swirls with your tongue until finally he's squeezing his eyes shut and releasing his seed into your mouth. The warmth in your throat seems to never end, akin to the strings of moans Hoseok lets out. After swallowing, you release his cock with a pop and wipe his cum off of your chin with the back of your hand.
Hoseok tilts his head back and keeps his hands in your hair, wanting to pause for a while for him to catch his breath. "Goddamn, ______." He lets out a breathless laugh.
You smile breathlessly and rub your hands up to his abs, tracing the outline lightly with your fingertips. His eyes darken again as they watch your lips swollen red and with his cum dripping down the sides. He forces himself to loosen his grip on your hair and slowly pulls his hands back.
You grab it before he can fully retreat. He looks at you, confused. A soft laugh escapes your lips.
"You still owe me a favor, shit head.”

pairing: tom holland x lifeguard!reader
warnings: drowning, i guess, although it is definitely not mentioned or described but still. staying under water a lil bit longer than what’s normal?
summary: you’re a lifeguard and when tom is playing in the pool with harrison and stays under for too long, you come to his aid
a/n: soo... apparently this was supposed to be for a writing contest hosted by  @sunshinehollandd and @naturallytom that i never finished. oops 🤭
i found it among my 92 drafts and decided to finish it - sort of. It’s more a quick drabble than anything (that i am not proud of) but oh well. at least it’s something, right? so enjoy!
Tumblr media
With your brand new sunglasses resting on the bridge of your nose, you settle back into the chair towering above the pool guests. The sun beams down from above, toasting the back of your neck that the umbrella was unable to protect.
The endless laughter from children, the frustrated scolds from parents, and the splashing of the water beneath you blend together into mere background noise. You shift in your seat, fishing out your bottle from your backpack. To be fair, it’s more a block of ice than water, but your throat relishes the few drops that do fall out as you tip the bottle upwards.
While you knew your job needed the upmost level of detail, you no longer felt the constant need to pay attention to every single guest. You had been at this long enough to trust your body to react on its own accord and was nowhere near as uptight as you had been your first day.
Relaxing back into your chair, you let your hidden gaze glide across the people that had taken the trip to your turf today. One of your favorite parts of the job, contrary to what some people might think, was the people watching. There is just something about observing people as they unknowingly go about their day.
Your eyes fall on Mina first. The fourteen year old girl is always there so it comes as no surprise. You watch proudly as she practices her butterfly stroke. Her ceaseless training had done wonders for her technique and you make a mental note to compliment her when she eventually gives up for the day.
There are a few other regulars as well. Mr. and Mrs. Norris; the retired couple that would come every weekend to work on their tans. Sasha; the single mom that also comes every weekend with her twin boys, Adam and George. Mr. Thomas; an older gentleman who seemed to enjoy speaking with you more than the actual swimming part. And then there was Paddy, who had just recently started visiting.
The young freckled boy (teenager, Paddy would correct) seemed to also be practicing his techniques much like Mina. There had been a fair share of conversations between the two of you and you had to admit that you enjoyed his company.
Your eyes land on the two men next to him that he appears to be talking to. You refrain the urge to roll your eyes as you keep watching them, their water fight becoming more intense by the second. Paddy seems to be cheering them on, but you can’t make out his words. Boys.
While water fights are definitely not unusual for you to witness, this is different as the young men look to be about your own age. For some reason unbeknownst to you, you’re unable to tear your eyes away from the two of them. Or, more specifically, the tone back muscles of the brunette with his back to you.
They are both extremely attractive - that truth is undeniable. As their playful fighting becomes physical, you finally catch a glimpse of the brunette. The black sunglass that had been nestled in his wet curls were knocked off and long forgotten the second they came in contact with the chlorinated water.
Your brows perked with amusement as you kept your eyes on the two. A little entertainment in an otherwise mundane work day didn’t hurt, right? The brunette almost effortlessly hops onto the blond’s back, a non-threatening chokehold around his neck. The overpowering does not last for long and before either you or him, it seemed, could anticipate it, the blond had successfully knocked him off and into the water.
The blond surfaced rather quickly, a triumphant grin dancing on his lips. You chuckled to yourself quietly, anxiously waiting for the attractive brunette to resurface as well. You were rather curious about how he would handle his loss. However, as a few more seconds pass and still no brown locks to be seen, you’re in full lifeguard mode.
You’re on autopilot. You had trained for years and while you rarely had to actually utilize your skills, it did happen occasionally. Your body doesn’t even react to the temperature difference as your toasted skin comes in contact with the chilled water. You make your way over to the small group in record time, grabbing ahold of the brunette’s arm just as he seems to make his way back up.
His coughs enter your ears as soon as you pull him to the surface and toward the edge of the pool. You’re well-aware of the small audience you have, feeling the burns of their curious stares, but ignore them dutifully and get back to the situation at hand.
He seems to be conscious enough and helps you out by hoisting himself up on the ledge. You pretend not to notice the way his toned biceps tense as he does so. You quickly hoist yourself up as well, the sun immediately resuming its toasting the minute your body is out of the water.
You offer a rather pathetic pat on the back as his ceaseless coughs continue. Eventually, he’s able to halt his coughing, his chest heaving as he tries to get enough air into his lungs without irritating his throat again.
“Are you okay?” you question, hiding your worry behind the professionalism you had adopted summers ago. “See, this is why lifeguards typically frown upon fighting in the water. Playfully or not.”
He nods, finally turning to meet your eyes. You choke down the gasp that involuntarily made its way up your throat. His brown orbs sparkle in the sun and you are immediately mesmerized by their beauty. Still, the way the embarrassment that had been swimming within them was replaced by shock and curiosity the moment they met your gaze didn’t go unnoticed by you.
“I-I’m good,” he brown-eyed man responds, swallowing thickly. The corner of his mouth turns upward as he runs a slightly unsteady hand through his wet curls. “Thanks for coming to my rescue.”
“Well, it is my job,” you retort, a playful smile settling on your lips. “Your poor fighting technique was amusing, so I was already watching.”
“You sure that’s the only thing you were watching, darling?” He’s full-on smirking now and you, once again, refrain from rolling your eyes at his childish antics.
“Y/N!”
You turn toward the familiar voice, watching with curious eyes as Paddy swims toward the two of you, the older blond hot on his heel. The freckled teen looks between you and the brunette, not even bothering to hide his amusement. His gaze lands on the brunette who looks at him expectantly.
“This is why I’m the swimmer and you’re the actor, Tom,” Paddy snorts.
Tom. So that was his name.
“Well, Pads, if I had known you were here hanging out with - Y/N, was it? - almost everyday then maybe I’d be here more often and would be a better swimmer.”
thanks for reading! i haven’t been on here in forever and i don’t know if you want to be on the taglist anymore, so let me know if you want to be taken off 🤓

CHAPTER ONE
HIGH SCHOOL 1997
“Alright, say ‘cheese’!” Your mother says holding up a camera, snapping photos of you. It was your first day of high school. You were already mortified as it was. You had no intention of looking back at this moment later in life.
“Mom, enough already!” you groaned standing in front of the front door, covering your face.
“Sweetheart, it’s your first day of high school! You’ll only have this moment once! And you look so cute!” She says admiring your outfit. You wore a white shirt and a floral slip dress over top and converse, a scrunchie in your hair securing your half up half down hairstyle.
“It’s not something I'm gonna want to remember!” you rolled your eyes.
“Oh come on! Don’t be like that! Just one more!” she says looking in the viewfinder.
“Mom” you groaned.
Before she could take one last photo, a car pulled up in front of your house, honking its horn.
“Come on freshie, we’re gonna be late!” Your cousin Santiago says standing up out of his blue Jeep Wrangler. You were saved.
“Gotta go, Mom, bye!” You said quickly rushing towards the Jeep.
“You guys be careful and have a nice first day!” She called from the porch.
“We will Auntie!” Santiago says plopping himself back down in his seat.
You open the door hoping inside, placing your Jansport's backpack down by your feet.
“Wait! Let me take a picture!” She shouts.
“Oh my god, please go! Driveaway! She's been taking pictures all morning!” You tell him and you sink in the passenger seat in embarrassment.
“Mom, please! We gotta go! I’ll see you later!” You shouted as Santi pulled out of there.
He couldn’t help but laugh as he drove down the street.
“She’s so embarrassing!” You groan.
“Come on, she means well and besides this is a big day for you, you're starting high school!” He nudges you.
“You’re the one to talk to, it’s your senior year!”
“Nothing I haven't done before, how are you feeling?”
“I don’t know...a little nervous I guess.”
“Don’t sweat it, High school is just like middle school except it's bigger, everyone's older and things are harder.”
“Gee, that sure washes my anxiety away.” you roll your eyes.
“Seriously, you’ll be fine and beside you’ll have me and Frankie around”
Franciso Morales was your cousin's best friend since elementary school. They’re three years older than you. You had first met Frankie when you were seven. Santiago hated when you tagged along with him and Frankie, but Frankie never seemed to mind. He always made sure to include and invite you in everything they did. The three of you have always been close, but the bond between you and Frankie was different. Frankie has always had a soft spot for you.
Santiago and Frankie still hung out with you when they were in middle school, but once they started high school and you entered middle school, you hardly saw them. They were too cool to hang out with you, who was stuck in the awkward phase of still being a kid and but on the verge of being a teenager.
For the first time in what seems like forever, your guys' lives will align once again. You weren’t gonna lie, it kinda hurt that they stopped hanging out with you all the time, but maybe since you’re starting high school, they’ll no longer treat you as a kid and they’ll start seeing you as mature.
You had no idea when the last time you saw Frankie. You hadn’t seen him all summer since he was working a summer job lifeguarding at a pool.
“Alright, Welcome Navarro...Here’s to the next 4 years in hell” Santiago laughs and he turns into school.
You noticed everyone was hanging outside in front of the school. Students sat or stood in the walkway, the font steps, or on the lawn.
Santiago weaved his way through the parking lot, waving and greeting people he drove by. He parked his car into his Senior parking stall and hopped out. You grabbed your schedule out of your bag and out of the car.
You slung your bag over your shoulder. You walked towards the back of his car staring at your school. The nerves were kicking in. You just wanted today to be easy sailing.
You looked down at your schedule.
First Period | McIntyre, Molly | Ceramics | Building G RM: 209
“Hey Santiago, can you show me where the G building is?” You say as you scan over your schedule.
“Santi?” You look beside you. He was gone. You glance towards the school, noticing he had already made his way through the parking lot, and over to a group of guys hanging around by the entrance, and they head inside. Most likely his friends and teammates from the swim team.
You sigh and roll your eyes. Guess you’ll be figuring things out on your own. You trek through the parking lot and make your way down the walkway leading to the entrance of your school.
As you walk down the hallway you notice the hustle and bustle. Santiago wasn’t lying when he said high school was bigger. Students standing around by their lockers catching up with friends jocks loudly parading around, asserting their dominance in the halls, and students trying to get where they needed to be like you.
The bell rings, and the hall quickly floods with students headed in every direction. You had people bumping into your shoulders and pushing from behind to move. You had no idea where you were supposed to go, and you only had 5 minutes to get there.
The hallway slowly started to clear up as everyone went into the classroom. You needed someone to give you directions and spotted the Janitor pushing his cart.
“Excuse me!” you said to walk up to him. “Hi sorry to bother you, but I’m lost. Could you tell me where the G building is?”
“Yeah, you go down this hall, take a left. It will lead you outside of the main building. When you get outside there should be a very colorful building with a bunch of art displays, that's where you're headed.”
“Thank you!” The bell rang. Oh, shoot.
“Yeah, no problem! You better get going now!”
You give the janitor another thank you and wave, and quickly speed walk in the path he gave you.
When you make it outside, you spot the colorful building with the art displays and fixtures outside. You made your way inside and headed to the second floor.
“207...208...209,” you said as you reached your room.
You open the door walking inside. Students were all seated at one of the five long rectangular tables in the middle of the classroom, everyone was staring at you, even the teacher. You wish the floor would swallow you up.
“And you are?” Mrs. McIntyre asked.
You give her your full name.
“Well...I don’t like tardiness, so next time get to class on time yeah? I’ll let you off with a warning. You can take a seat.”
You heard some snickering in class as you made your way over to an empty spot at one of the tables.
“Alright Class, I want you to find a partner from another table, and I want you to discuss what you did over the summer and create a drawing using the paper and material in front of you. You have the entire class period.” Mrs. McIntyre instructs.
With that, everyone got up and moved around, gravitating towards the people they already knew or people they have never met. Everyone from your table had left. You grabbed the poster paper, and a pencil. You frowned as you noticed everyone had already gotten their partners.
“Come on, where is the gorgeous smile I love so much?” You look over to someone walking toward you. They wore white shirts, jeans, sneakers, and their navy blue letterman jacket, a bag slung over their shoulder. Their hair was short but shaggy and they had a giddy smile plastered on their face.
Your face lit up seeing him. “Frankie!”
“Hey Smiles”. Smiles was his nickname for you when you were kids because you always managed to have a smile on your face even through tough times. Only he and Santiago were allowed to call you that.
“Do you have a partner? He asked.
“No”
“Okay good” he tosses his bag on the ground, pulls out the chair, and turns slightly toward you as he sits beside you. He pulls you into a hug. You loved Frankies hugs. They were always so warm and loving.
“Ugh, look at you, a Freshie now” he was pulling away, rustling your hair.
“Hey, quit it!” You say swatting away his hand.
“How’ve you been Smiles? Excited, you're starting high school?”
“Been good. Yeah, I guess. I don’t know anyone though. All my friends went to Western, which sucks”
“I’m sure you’ll make new friends fast. You’re a likable person...” He smiles.
“How was your summer?” you ask to pick up the pencil and begin doodling on the poster paper.
He picks up a pencil and starts to draw as well. “Busy. I spent the whole summer yelling at kids and saving them from drowning in the deep end. They all think they can survive the diving board.”
“Must have been stressful.”
“Yeah it was, how about you? How was your summer?” He grabbed some colored pencils, adding color to his drawing.
“It was okay. I didn’t do anything exciting. I hung out with my friends and third wheeled with Santiago and his summer fling” you rolled his eyes.
“Oh god,” he started to laugh.
“Yeah...They made out the whole time no matter where we went. The only reason why I tagged along was because my aunt forced him to invite me to places and you know how he gets when I bud along on things…”
“I’m sorry. If I wasn’t so busy with work, I would have come along to keep you company.”
“It’s whatever. I ended up leaving them to doing my own thing while they...did whatever”
“Santiago man..” he shakes his head
“Tell me about it” you laugh
Frankie and you continued to draw and catch up the whole class period. You hadn’t realized how fast time went by until the bell rang.
“Alright, class write your names on the back of your paper and turn in whatever you have”
Frankie started collecting the materials, putting them back in their designated area on the table while you quickly wrote your names on the back.
You pick up your bag off the floor and slip your arms through the strap. You walk up to the front, handing in your poster Frankie follows you out into the hallways.
“Alright, what class do you have now?” He says. He takes your schedule from your hands and looks it over.
The two of you begin through the hallway and down the stairs.
“English with Mr. Hastings is the main building, A, second floor. He’s an ass and his class is pretty hard. You have to read a whole bunch of novels and write papers...” He continues to look over your schedule.
You both made it outside of G building. “Okay, you got Ms. Omura for science in C in the building right here. She’s cool. If you really wanna be her favorite, bring her chocolate...Coach Davis for PE, his class is in the gym. Mentally prepare yourself because you’re gonna be doing a lot of running. Mr. Fox for History in the main building. His class is super boring but easy. You just watch old films and documentaries and he sleeps through the whole class. Oh, and you’re taking French with Madame Keller. She’s in the N building, but I don't know what she's like. I'm in my fourth year Spanish.”
“You‘ve been taking Spanish for the last four years? You already speak Spanish. You’re bilingual.”
“Yeah, it’s an easy class for me then. Straight A’s baby” he smirks.
You roll your eyes, “Thanks for your help Frankie”
“Yeah don’t sweat it. Alright, I gotta head across campus, I’ll catch you later alright!”
“Bye” you give him a small smile and wave.
It was lunchtime. You were holding the tray in your hand, looking around in the loud and crowded lunchroom. You had no idea where to sit. Everyone had their clique. You noticed Santiago and Frankie were sitting with their friends.
You and Frankie make eye contact. He smiles at you, motioning with his head for you to come and sit with them. Your eyes widen, shaking your head no.
Frankie furrows his eyebrows, and tilts his head again, motioning for you to come. You sigh walking over.
“H-Hi '' you said standing in front of their table. All their eyes were on you. Some of the guys had confused or surprised looks. They were wondering who you were and why a freshman was at their table. Your heart pounded against your chest. This was a bad idea.
“Smiles, come sit by me-“ Frankie sat at the edge, but slid over on the bench so you had a place to sit.
“Frankie” Santiago says sounding annoyed, looking at him like he was crazy. You know he didn’t want you sitting with him and the guys.
“Come on, Santi it's their first day-”
“No” he muttered under his breath.
“It’s okay!” You quickly said. “I just wanted to say hi, I’ll see you guys later”. You rush away embarrassed and walk away to a nearby empty table.
You heard a bit of a commotion and protest from the guys. You look up to see leaving the table and walking towards you. Frankie sets his lunch tray down on the table, dropping his bag on the ground, and sits across from you. He picks up his sandwich to eat the rest.
“What are you doing?” You asked. You weren’t expecting me to come to sit with you.
He was just about to take a bite, his mouth gaped open “Uh... I’m about to eat my lunch” he says before chomping down into his food.
“I mean like... why are you sitting with me?”
“Am I not allowed to sit with you?” His mouth was full.
“No it’s just- shouldn’t you be sitting with Santiago and your friends?”
He swallows the bits he was chewing and sets his half-eaten sandwich down on his plate, picking up his milk “What? Are you embarrassed by being seen with me or something?” he says teasingly.
“The other way around actually. Shouldn’t you be embarrassed?”
“Why would I be embarrassed?”
“Because you're a Senior eating lunch with a Freshman? Santiago clearly didn’t want me to sit with you guys. Look around, everyone’s staring”
He looks around the cafeteria. You were right, people were staring, even some of the swim team guys. He rolled his eyes. He could care less what people thought.
“Let them stare. I don’t care and besides, you're my friend. I’ve known you since we were kids. I’m not embarrassed to be seen with you. Never have, never will be. Santiago is a dick though. I’m sorry he’s being an asshat”
“You and Santi got your own thing going on and I get that-”
“But it doesn't make it right he did that” Frankie rolls his eyes. “He’s always excluded you from everything”
“I know he loves me though, even if he leaves me in the dust. Seriously I’m used to it, it's fine” you chuckle showing Frankie that you weren’t mad. It was just the way Santiago was with you. He did love you and was protective over you, but he needed his space at times. Your relationship with him, was more like your older brother than he is your cousin.
“...Thanks for sitting with me”
“Well the least you can do is give me your cookie” he took the cookie off your plate and stuffed it into his mouth.
“Hey! I was going to eat that you jerk!”
“I can’t take you home,” Santi tells you as the two of you stood outside of school, students weave their way around you as they headed off-campus.
“You're kidding…” you looked at him annoyed. You knew Santi needed space, you understood that, but this has gone too far.
“Look I know I promised I’d take you to and from school this whole year, but I got a date with Jennifer Ortega-” He motions to the girl standing a few feet away, she waves a Santiago, and he waves back.
“Santi, it's the first day of school, how the hell do you already have a date?”
“Worked her with my game... charm and charisma…” he smirks
“Gag me... so you're going to ditch me, and take her out”
“Well, you put it like that-”
“I seriously hate you”
“Thank you! I love you! I'll make it up to you, I promise” he grabs Jennifer's hand, rushing towards his jeep. You rolled your eyes. He could have just dropped you off at home, then went out with Jeniffer.
You headed off-campus and walked on the sidewalk, taking the path that was in the direction of your house.
You walked for a good 10 minutes. You were hating Santiago right now. Your blood was boiling. You were plotting your revenge on him when a shiny red pickup truck pulled over.
“Smiles!”
“Frankie!” You signed in relief, walking over to the window.
“Get in!”
You opened the truck door, sliding onto the truth bench. You were dripping wet.
“You’ve been a lifesaver all day, I swear” you whimper.
“Where the hell is Santi? Wasn’t he supposed to take you home?”
“Asshole fucking ditched me! He had a date! How the hell gets a date on the first day of school?!” you snapped.
Frankie veres back onto the street heading down the road.
“If he does that again, or whenever you need a ride, I’ll take you home”
“Thanks” you slump in the
“I’ll talk to him”
“Frankie, you’ve been doing that for years,-”
“Just let me deal with him okay”
“Okay, if that makes you feel better, then go right ahead”
Frankie pulls in your neighborhood. He drove several roads and made a few turns, then pulled into the driveway of your house.
“I hope your first day wasn’t too bad,” he says, parking the car.
“It wasn’t and I have you to thank for that...You helped me out a lot today. I'm glad I know I can always count on you.” you give him a small smile. “I’ll see you later Frankie”
“Bye Smiles”
With that you hop out of his truck, shutting the door. He backs out of the driveway, honking before leaving.
“Who was that?” Your mom asked. You turned around, finding her standing in the doorway.
“Frankie Morales...Santiago had something to do, he gave me a ride home”
“My gosh, he’s so cute don’t you think?”
“Mom” you groaned.
“I always liked him. He’s such a sweet boy and always sweet with you...” She smiled. “And I know you’ve always had a little crush on him”
“No! I’ve never had a crush like Frankie Morales!”
“Why are you being so defensive about it?” She cocked her eyebrows at you. “Honey there’s no shame-”
“Mom, just let it go! I don’t like him”
“You may think you don’t like him, but deep down you know you do sweetheart.” She leaves you standing outside alone, heading back into the house.
You watch Frankie's car drive down the road until he disappears around the corner.
You didn’t want to admit it, but your mother was right. You did have a crush on Frankie. You started developing a crush on him in middle school. It was a little harmless crush and it didn’t mean anything… or so you thought.

Tumblr media
It’s quiet in the house, silent mostly apart from the gentle hum of the washing machine that fills the background as your eyes gaze over the pages of the sturdy book that rests in your lap. Your focus is interrupted every now and then when Cashew lets out a deep snore you’re surprised hasn’t woken him.
He’s curled up beside you on the couch with his head resting against your thigh. The book can wait so you’ve set it off to the side, rubbing your palm in long, gentle strokes along his body. It’s hard not to notice how he doesn’t climb up as easily as he used to. You vividly recall the day you adopted him and it’s hard to believe that was thirteen years ago but just like Cashew isn’t a puppy anymore, your kids aren’t children.
Ariel is living in New York and though you knew this was coming for a long time you still miss her every day. It made sense for her to be there with more opportunities in dance. She was loving every moment training at the American Ballet Theatre.
New York had offered more than just dance, Ariel’s heart had been there ever since she met Ollie. You understood the difficulties of a long distance relationship, having done so with Lance for a while. It still amazed you though how dedicated they were to each other despite their age. Their friends enjoyed the convenience of being face to face while Ariel and Ollie spent more time having “dates” over FaceTime until they were able to see each other in person again.
Now you’re the one that has to FaceTime her, thankful that no matter how exhausted she was after a long day of dancing she always has time to speak to her parents. Lance knew the rigorous training she was going through, reminiscent of his own Olympic training. “You don’t have to call us every night,” he would tell her and while Ariel knew she didn’t have to, she could see passed the smile on his face knowing how much her Dad misses his Starfish. If a few minutes a day made her parents happy she would give that and more without question.
Seeing her over the phone was good but in person was even better and last weekend you were able to do that. It was her twentieth birthday and you and Lance flew up to celebrate. It didn’t matter that you last saw her two months ago, both of you hugged her like it’s been forever.
She was more than settled in at the Barnes’ house and you couldn’t thank them enough as they offered to have Ariel stay with them. You were certain Cassie had a lot of influence on their decision, emphatically telling them all the reasons why Ariel should live there.
Truthfully she didn’t have a lot of convincing to do. You and Lance were as close to the Barnes’ as Ariel and Cassie. You had a long discussion with them and they kindly offered Orion’s old bedroom. She had been living in the apartment above their bookstore for the last few years so they did have the space. Plus they considered Ariel family and they wanted to make sure she was safe as she navigated life in a new city.
It was sad that Theo couldn’t make it and no one was more disappointed than him. He would use any opportunity to see his friends in New York and it killed him to have to miss this trip. Theo was training to become a lifeguard and his classes were every Saturday; missing even one would disqualify him from the program.
He was able to FaceTime as everyone sang “Happy Birthday” to Ariel, watching her blow out the candles on the cake Cassie made for her. The phone was passed around so Theo could say goodbye to everyone, heat forming on his cheeks when Ori told him how much he was missed. His smile curbed just a bit when Leo grabbed the phone and teased that he wasn’t missed that much.
Theo was only alone for a few days and while some seventeen year olds with a house to themself might throw a party Theo was focused on practicing. He stayed long after class was over to continue swimming laps in the Olympic size pool. With his test coming up he needed to practice as much as he could.
The sound of the door shutting puts a smile on your face. Before he even announces himself you know it’s Theo, you can tell by the way he shuffles inside, dropping off his bag near the front closet like he always does.
Cashew slowly lifts his head up as Theo plops down on the couch. “Hey mom,” he said quickly, smiling at Cashew who slowly got up to turn and face Theo.
“You’re home early. I thought you’d be practicing some more.”
He looked up from Cashew to answer you, still giving the good old dog scratches behind his ears. “They had some private lessons so I couldn’t stay. Did you have lunch yet? I’m gonna make something before I get into our pool, unless you needed it?”
You couldn’t help the smile on your face knowing Theo had grown into a kind and considerate young man; not that you expected anything else. You and Lance worked hard raising him and Ariel with manners and to treat everyone with respect
“I ate already, thank you Pumpkin.” Theo dropped his head to Cashew as fond embarrassment came over him at the sound of his nickname. “And the pool is all yours though I do wish you would take it easy. You’re sure you haven’t been pushing your knee too much?”
His shorts are bunched just above the scar from the ACL surgery he had earlier this year and the injury, although common, was devastating to Theo. He loved being active so bringing all of his activities to an immediate halt hurt more than the pop felt in his knee. He was eager to get back into everything which made you worry. Then again, as his mother you would always worry about him.
“I feel good, trust me Mom.” Theo reassured you with a smile. He got up from the couch and stopped to plant a kiss on your cheek before heading to the kitchen. You helped Cashew down, his nails tapping slowly against the floors as he followed Theo, hopeful and waiting for some food to drop.
As you were folding laundry you didn’t expect Theo to be there, startling you enough that a pair of folded socks went flying out of your hands. He laughed as he went to pick it up, snickering still as he asked, “Do you know where the Bluetooth speaker is? Mine broke.”
Pursed lips held feigned anger for Theo laughing at you but you couldn’t keep it up. “It might still be in the garage from the last time Ariel was home.”
“Thanks,” he said, tossing the rolled up socks your way. He turned on his heels before backtracking, flashing a smile as bright and white as the freshly folded towel he took from the pile, throwing it over his bare shoulder.
Theo was ready to swim again, and not long after you heard music blasting from the backyard. Your pool wasn’t large enough to accurately practice the timed laps he needed to complete for certification but he was able to work on other things, like perfect all of his strokes and practice retrieving a diving brick from the bottom of the pool. It was a little awkward and Theo supposes that grabbing a person will feel just as foreign. Then again he’s kind of done it before.
Last year when his friends from New York came to visit everyone was helping Ariel pack up things for her move. Ollie even brought an extra suitcase so he could bring back some things in advance to ease the trip she would have to make the following month. As her best friend Cassie was at her side, holding the list Ariel made and rightfully ignoring it as she pointed at random things in the room to see if it was something Ariel wanted to take. (And no Cassie, there was no need for Ariel to take the pink bowling pin from her seventh birthday party with her to New York.)
Leo was doing his best to help, at Cassie’s insistence. He would much rather be hanging out with Theo who is much luckier than him for not having to help pack up. His eyes shifted to the open door, hoping the sound of the person coming up the stairs was Theo, or Ori even. It was a good thing Ariel’s room didn’t face the backyard because Leo would have been running outside if he got a look at what was going on.
Theo can’t escape the memory of the day he taught Ori how to swim. Somehow he was lucky enough to be alone with her, without Leo’s disapproving stare weighing him down. His own nerves were doing that for him but he pushed them aside as much as he could.
Ori was embarrassed, thinking she was too old to be learning how to swim at twenty-three. Her makeshift doggy paddle was enough to fool others into thinking she simply preferred the shallow end to stay near her younger siblings when they were little.
The truth was the deep end was unpredictable. There were too many what-ifs and if Ori could not solidly control a situation then she simply wouldn’t go for it. But things didn’t seem as scary with Theo there. Maybe it was the look in his eyes, honesty swirling in the reflection of the water below them; or his smile, with kindness pouring out from the soft pull of his lips. There was no need to feel shame and with Theo she never had a reason to.
It was one of the best days of his life, not only because of the time he was able to spend with her but because Ori trusted him. He kept her safe and taught her as much as he could before the sky decided to open up on them.
Every time he gets in his pool those memories wash over him. Theo can’t help the heat that creeps on his cheeks, a minor distraction he tries to shake off so he could continue practicing. But when he remembers her scent, fresh lavender that’s soft and pretty just like Ori, it has him swimming through the clouds.
It was hard not to think about Ori, she’s been on his mind ever since they met. He was a child then with a big crush on that pretty girl with the big smile and gorgeous eyes; but with every passing year his feelings have grown and Theo knows deep down in his heart there's a reason why he can't shake this crush. His mind drifts with hope for the future.
Eventually he was able to focus, staying out there until long after Lance got home. Dinner was quick and you and Lance could see how much Theo had pushed himself all day. He was exhausted, unable to control his yawning in between chewing his food. The sun had barely begun to set when he said goodnight to you both.
The rest of the night was spent in bed, cuddling up with Lance as you watched a movie hearing the gentle patter of rain against the windows. Cashew was resting at the end of the bed, surprising you when he lifted his head up at the sound of the toilet flushing down the hall.
“Good boy Cashew,” you cooed, leaning forward to pat his head, “You heard Theo, good boy!” It was nice, for a moment, to believe Cashew wasn't as old as he really was.
You settled back against Lance, feeling him press a kiss to the top of your head. His hand rubbed up and down your arm gently, reaching down to squeeze a handful of your bottom.
As you lifted your head up towards him, Lance’s growing smirk told you that Cashew might have to temporarily move to his bed on the floor. He leaned in to capture your lips, your need for him growing deeper until everything came to a record scratching halt.
“Mmmm just like that baby.”
You pulled away, puzzled by the foreign sound of a woman whose pornographic moans grew louder and louder.
“What the fuck? Where is that coming from?”
Both of your phones were on the nightstand untouched and the movie was still playing so it was unlikely that the remote had been accidentally touched. Lance chuckled as he sat back against the headboard, wishing you would get back in bed so he could pull those same sounds from you.
You scanned your bedroom following the lewd sounds until you stopped dead in your tracks. On the bathroom counter your eyes widened in horror, staring at the sleek Bluetooth speaker, the same device Theo was using earlier. Lance must have taken it back inside before the storm.
Your feet carried you in a hurry, jumping back in bed in a frenzy, disturbing poor Cashew as you buried your face in the pillow.
“What?” Lance asked, first with a laugh which faded into concern as you shook your head, muttering a slew of “no’s” into the fabric. “Y/N what’s wrong?”
Your head turned to the side, peeking one eye open at Lance who couldn’t stand the anticipation any longer.
“It’s… Theo.” Your face cringed as you said his name. “He must have been too tired before to disconnect his phone from the speaker…”
Lance’s lips pressed into a thin line realizing he would have to handle this embarrassing situation since there was no way you could.
It wasn’t that Theo wasn’t open with you. He never shied away from bringing Amber over the house, asking for your advice on sweet things he could do for her especially when they got back together but there were some things he definitely felt more comfortable talking about with his Dad.
Lance let out a heavy breath, closing the door behind him so you didn’t have to hear that awkward conversation.
“Cashew help me!” you pleaded, patting the spot on the mattress next to you for him to cuddle.
He plopped down beside you, licking your face as you gently pet him. The moans abruptly stopped and you felt some relief though a bit of sadness lingered. Although Theo would always be your pumpkin he was no longer a little boy.
“Theo’s all grown up now huh Cashew?” His head tilted slowly, a reminder that he too was all grown. As the door creaked open you lifted your head to Lance, hesitantly asking, “Everything good?”
He pinched the bridge of his nose, letting out a small laugh, “Yeah... he’ll be fine.”
Getting back into bed, Lance adjusted his position since Cashew had taken up a good portion of the middle. With Ariel in New York and Theo graduating next year it made you both realize just how much time had passed and because of that Lance didn’t take it personal when you snuggled with Cashew instead of him. He threw his arm over both of you, flashing that same smile that spoke the words he didn’t need to say.
You were both feeling the same thing, the yearning of wanting to turn back time and not let your babies (and puppy) grow up as fast as they did. Or at the very least, remind Theo to disconnect his phone from the speaker!

Writing modern teen Dad Sokka (zukka uni)
I wrote this a few months ago, but I ran out of steam and inspiration, so anyone is welcome to take this on and finish it as their own or take it as a prompt and try there own story.
Summer of grade 11, Sokka and Yue spend the whole summer as lifeguards, soaking up the sun, making each other laugh and dreaming of the future.
One night it’s just the two of them in the pool after it’s closed, you can see the full moon through the windows above, Sokka and Yue lay on floaties driving around the pool.
“Hey Sokka?”
“Hmm?”
“What do you want to be when you grow up?”
Sokka laughs “Haven’t heard that since I was a kid and I wanted to be and otter penguin - and no I have no idea where that came from.”
Yue turns over so she can look Sokka in the eyes. “Seriously though, what do you want to do when you can leave this small town and its small ideas.
Sokka could tell that there was more behind the question but tired answering it honestly “I dunno exactly “What” I want to be, but I think I would like to build things, useful things too. And I’m not really a car guy or a building guy.”
Yue snorts “Ya not a car guy, says the guy who failed to get his license twice!”
“Hey!” Sokka splashes yue playfully. “Okay okay, I have been looking the some of the research into mixing prosthetics with robotics and focusing more on make prosthetics one with the body, I don’t know much about it yet. But I guess I started reading all about them and I kinda became obsessed.”
“what about hockey?”
“I love hockey, and the coaches at school think I’m good enough to get scholarships, so if hockey helps support an actual career for me I’m all for it, but I know I want to do more than catch pucks my whole life, I want to really use my brain and solve puzzles.”
“hmm” Yue turned over and looked back at the moon thoughtful.
“What about you?”
“What about me?”
“Well as you so gracefully put it, what do you want to do when you can leave this place that’s too small for you and your big ideas and dreams?”
“Well when you put it like that… I want to travel, see places, important places. I want to fall in love, out of love, I want to have enough friends that my house is always filled with good food and loud laughter. I want to be a Mom someday, I think maybe I want to go to school and study philosophy, not sure what kind of job that leads to but I want to ask questions, the big questions like why are we here, what is a life well spent?”
“Whoa”
“Ya… Whoa”
“and have you talked to your dad about that?
“Sort of, and it sort of didn’t go well.”
“he’s still set on you making the Canadian swim team? Duty to country and family stuff?”
“YeP” she said as she popped the P
“That sucks”
“indeed it does”
They floated around in silence for a bit longer.
“Hey Sokka?”
“Hmm?”
“Do you want to have sex?”
Sokka promptly fell into the water, Yue’s laugh echoing around the empty pool.
They did indeed tumble into bed together that night, an awkward interaction for both of them that ended with the laughing covered in sweat. That morning when Sokka woke up Yue was already sitting on his bed looking at his doodles on the walls.
“Sokka I love you, I do, and I honestly thought maybe I loved you like a girl loves a guy, but I think I just love you because you're my best friend.”
“Ookaaay. I think I should add in you’re my best friend too? Because you’re being weird”
Yue looked to her hands in her lap and a tear fell to her hand. “Sokka, think I might like girls.”
She said it so quietly that it took a second for Sokka to understand what she had just told him.
“Whoa, no I mean, Cool! That’s fine. I support you, wait was I really bad last night?”
Yue’s tears quickly turn into laughs “No you idiot! You ere great, it just wasn’t right”
“Okay well cool then…..”
“Cool then”
“promise you won’t tell?”
“Yue, I promise I won’t tell! I can even pretend to be your boyfriend so your dad can’t freak out, and we can totally go to the girls soccer games this year if you want?”
“Sokka I love you, you big dummy”
“Well I love you to, to the moon and back dreamer”
___________________________________
So Sokka and Yue were still best friends and they spent the fall attached at the hip, and when Yue found out she was expecting a baby and her parents kicked her out, Sokka just grabbed her hand and her backpack and walked into his house stating that Yue lived here now.
Hakoda and Bato nodded and welcomed her home, Katara squealed and fawned over becoming an auntie.
And for a while things were good, they were complicated as they prepared to become teen parents, co parenting as best friends, both of them aiming for scholarships and working part-time gigs whenever they could to save up. But life was happy, they were going to have a baby.
But then things went wrong, Yue went into labour 6 weeks early, her pressure dropped, the baby’s dropped, there was blood, there were doctors everywhere, then there was a small shrill cry, more moving and running and yelling. Then there was a lot of quiet.
Yue died in labour, their baby was in the NICU for three weeks to improve her lungs and even then doctors were worried about how premature she was. Finally after weeks camped out in a hospital next to his baby in a box or in his bed in the dark or the shower staring at the wall, he could bring his daughter home. She was going to be okay.
Her name was Juno Kya Last name, and she was perfect, wide hazel eyes like her Mom, and the sharp cupids bow like Kya, it looked like she would have Sokka’s dark hair and complexion. She watched everything with curious eyes, and didn’t cry unless she was hungry or tired which was often the first few months. But Bato and Hakkoda loved their granddaughter to bits and helped with everything. The diapers, the late feedings, the tummy time, the grieving.
The grieving was the hardest. Mostly because he was to busy trying to be there as a Dad and as a student and as a team player. He spent so long being there for everyone else that one night once hockey season was over and Katara took Juno to a girls sleepover he was all alone, for the first time since he was a little boy after his Mom died.
The dam burst and he sat on the floor and cried, he cried until his Dads came home and they wrapped him up in a hug and he cried some more. Then they made hot chocolate and sat on the couch in thick chewy blankets. They talked and talked, Hakkoda speaking about loosing the love of his life with two young children, being a dad by himself, Bato spoke about loosing his best friend Kya so unfairly and traumatically. The spoke about the unfairness of life and the peace in death, and how he will never move on but he will move forward, with one hand holding his daughter and the other pointing him forward to his own future.
When Katara came home the next day, Sokka was already awake and making blueberry pancakes poorly singing ice ice baby. When he saw his sister holding Juno he scooped her up and gave her a million kisses.
They were going to be okay, because they were loved, because Sokka was smart, because Sokka was going to be driven just like his best friend was, he was going to ask the big questions whenever he could, and love and laugh, so much his home was filled with it.
For Juno and for Yue, and for himself too.
_________________________
So Sokka worked his ass off, he won a full ride scholarship to university for hockey to study bio engineering, he was even able to work on family residence on campus, which took a load off his shoulders of trying to figure out travel to and from school with a baby, now he skates, lives and attends school on campus (which even had a daycare)
During the summer leading up leaving for school Bato revealed that ever since Sokka got into school he has been trying to transfer his job to the same city so they could be closer and he had not only done that but he had gotten a promotion out of it too. So Katara was starting at a new high school for senior year and Bato and Hakkoda were moving to be 20 minutes away from Sokka’s school.
He knew he would have to get used to being more independent, as he knew his dads thought he would be annoyed by them following him, or his sister would be upset about changing schools. But no, katara had high hopes for her new adventure and sokka was just relived to not be alone, and that Juno had more than one badly an adult person in her life.

Little hands grabbed at Sokka’s hair as he hoisted 9 month old Juno up on his hip. “Well June-Bug this is it our home for the next four or so years”
Juno looked up at her dad with wide hazel eyes and replied in noisy baby babble.
From behind Sokka Bato came up and rested a hand on on his shoulder “Deep breaths kid, you’re going to be great.”
Sokka smiled ruefully at Bato as Katara ran up with a stroller full of baby things and his dad struggled with his hockey bags as he tried to lock the car with one hand.
Sokka looked at Juno again and whispered to her and himself “Deep breaths kid”
Later after they had gotten the crib set up in the attached office to Sokka’s room Bato and Katara took Juno for a walk in her stroller to grab some food. While Sokka and his dad finished unpacking.
“Son are you sure you want to stay on campus, are you sure you want Juno to stay with you? We could take her for the weeks mostly and you could come stay with us at the new place on weekends. I know you expected to do this more by yourself, but Bato would move oceans for you kid and got the new position in town, so we’re here, we can help.”
“Dad… Ya I’m going to need help, so thank you, I will take you up on looking after Juno when I need it, but you and Bato are going to be looking after her as her grandparents and not as her guardians. I promised Yue - Juno and I are family, and I’m not going to pass her off whenever I feel like not being a Dad anymore, she’s my kid and I want to be here for all the stuff, the walking the talking everything, and that’s not going to happen if she’s only my kid on weekends.
“Sokka you’re doing just fine son, more than fine really. Okay okay well when Juno wants to see her Great Papa and GB (Grand Bato) you give us a call, or if you need to pull an all nighter for an assignment you call, anything you call and we can be here. And when you get your game schedule, email us so we can make sure one of us can take her to the games, Bato is very excited about the baby headphones he bought her.”
“Okay Dad Okay, Now get out of here ya old man, and Dad Thanks for being here.”
“Of course Sokka”
________________________
Sokka was pretty pleased with his new place, sure it was small, but it was clean and had more room than he expected to get so he was grateful. The suite was in the family/accessible living accommodations which was a small building with elevators to every floor. This suite had two rooms on opposite sides of the small common area which had a worn in couch and a coffee table. There was also a small kitchen and an even smaller dinner table. Sokka’s room had a small attached office space that he turned into Juno’s room, even though she still co-slept with him most nights, it was good to have a crib for naps and a place to put her never ending supply of diapers, blankets and clothes.
Sokka's roommate was a paraplegic kid named Teo who happened to have basically the same schedule as Sokka so they quickly bonded over advancements in the medical and mechanical fields. Teo also seemed pretty chill and took a liking to Juno right away. Which made Sokka endlessly happy because, well they were now living together and babies cry and poop so he was worried about tiptoeing around his new home.
Day care still didn’t open for the next two weeks while sokka would be attending training camp so his Dad would be taking most of the days with Juno, but it happened to shake out where the first day of meet and greet and skate Hakkoda was attending a support group meeting for retired field medics in a new city and Sokka didn’t want his Dad to miss it, plus it gave Sokka an opportunity to introduce everyone to his best girl.
Katara came to hold Juno while he was on the ice excited to get a sneak peek at university life before her high school year started.
“Da da da” Juno babbled as she mushed her fist into Sokka’s mouth, sokka smiled and pretended to gobble up her hand, the baby shrieked and laughed and Sokka adjusted her baby sweater around her neck.
“Sokka she’s fine, I have diapers, formula, and the big blanket you packet in the stroller, if she gets fussy I can take her for a walk to see the birds, and she won’t get cold because you packed a million layers and she will be held by every limbo there so again, she will be fine.”
Sokka checked the stroller again nodding to what his sister was saying. She was right, he was prepared, he had already emailed with the coaches so they knew what was up and he had coffee with the captain yesterday, who looked like a giant holding his baby, but overall seemed like a good guy. Eric “Wooly Mammoth/ Wooly” Woolner seemed like a solid guy, like physically solid and also like the type of guy Sokka could lean on as a leader while figuring out classes, fatherhood and being on a university level hockey team.
Everyone met in a blank sort of room with lots of chairs facing a projector, Sokka thought it was probably to review game footage and make new plays. He settled in with Juno on his lap as the other guys in the room took notice that there was a baby in their midst.
“Sokka you brilliant man!” Shouted a familiar face from across the room as he stood up and ran over.
Haru was taller and broader than Sokka, much bigger at least than when they last saw each other when they played on the same club team when they were 15.
“Haru, dude! You’re here! Awesome!”
Haru took a look at Juno and sized her up, then he stuck out his tongue and did a silly dance, Juno hid her face in Sokka’s shoulder and Haru ran around so she could see him and did it again. This time he managed to get a small smile before she hid her face again, grabbing Sokka’s collar with her hands.
“She’s cute Socks, she yours?”
“Yep, this is Juno.”
“Nice, is she gonna be at the games and shit?”
“Easy up on the potty mouth there dude, and ya I hope so, my dads moved into town so they hope to be there and bring her to them and stuff.”
“Wicked, is the uh - mom in the picture?”
“Nah, she passed when Juno was born so it’s just us.”
“Sorry bro”
“Thanks, anyways we should totally catch up properly later. Let’s introduce the team to our new good luck charm shall we?”
Katara was right, Juno has passed from bro to dude to himbo, once she realized that everyone one here was as big and cuddly as her dad she seemed to warm up and enjoy the attention. Then it was time for everyone to get on the ice to pass around the puck and do some laps getting a feel for the other players on the ice.
Juno sat with Katara smearing her messy hands all over the glass looking at the people on the rink until she fell asleep in her stroller tucked under a whole blanket.
Sokka enjoyed the team, Haru was a great comfort of home, Wooly was a level headed captain that set a tone for the rest of the guys, then there was Lucas “Longshot” Cho, Dennis “The Duke” Cunningham, Sam “Rooke” Chesterfield, Finn “Pipsqueak” Biggs, and the team manager Suki and the assistant captain Zuko.
All of the guys were loud and boisterous, including Suki, but Zuko seemed reserved and maybe a little prickly.
Then there were coaches Piandao and Bumi. Piandao seemed more serious, the man with a plan. He had coached a lot of different teams and was sought after for his reputation of the coach who turns coal into diamonds, Bumi on the other hand had coached here forever it seemed. He gave Sokka Manic genius vibes that had him thinking that maybe he should let Piandao hold Juno for the occasional practise instead of the ripped crazy old guy who ran around the ice in uggs.
——————
Later when Sokka was packing up and talking to the coaches about potentially bringing Juno with him in case he couldn’t find a sitter last minute working out how that would work, Katara pulled up with a fussy Juno in her stroller.
“Sorry Sokka I have to run, Dad is outside waiting for me and I have to finish unpacking my room tonight”
“All good Kat, thanks again for coming tonight!”
Katara leaned down and kissed her fingers and pressed them to Juno’s head “Love you little bug”
The coaches bid their farewells shortly after and Sokka packed his stuff into the stroller before taking Juno out to settle her and give her a bottle.
Just as he tucked her into his arms and pulled the bottle from the bag someone walked briskly into the locker room where he was sitting.
Zuko and Assistant Captain huffed in and sat down hanging up his phone and tossing it on the bench.
“Uh hi?”
Zuko whirled around looking ready for a fight before spotting Sokka and said baby sucking on a bottle. “Hi Baby.” Zuko said shyly.
Sokka laughed “ Take me on a date before you call me that.” And winked at Zuko.
Zuko looked like a startled deer so Sokka took pity on him.
“Just kidding dude, I mean sort of I am Bi - what a discovery that was and anyways - sorry I wasn’t coming on to you - I don’t know you - I just thought I should make it clear that I COULD come on to you because I like guys, and girls…. Whelp I would start running away in shame now for oversharing but I’m currently a food spruce for this nugget sooo, yep just going to sit here and wish I could time travel to punch myself in the face.”
Throughout the vomit of words coming out of sokka’s mouth Zuko seemed to relax and then smirk at the other man.
“You do know I was talking to your kid right?”
“Yep, yes I did”
“Well see you around Sokka.”
And Zuko grabbed his bag and left the locker room. First impressions for today might be bit all over the place Sokka thought to himself.
____________________________________
Sokka talked to Juno all of the time. What can he say, he is a guy with a lot of words and they can’t all stay in his head.
So Juno has an interesting and advanced vocal for a 9 month old baby.
Of course she can address the people in her life, Dada, Kat, Great Papa, and GB (Great Bato)
She can also ask for milk, to go up, and uh oh.
She loves to say no but can infect say yes (sokka swears he’s heard that one)
But it also means she tries to say things that Sokka often says to varying degrees of baby success
“Stupid gravity!”
"Monkey balls”
“Shoot”
“I love you to the moon and back”
“hockey time.
And her favourite word of all time
Puck
It stopped making Sokka freeze after the first 2o times he thought he heard his baby say fuck. Now its just a cute funny thing his kid has figured out, Dada has to find the puck, and it is her job to hide them.
She hides pucks everywhere, he swears sometimes she is multiplying them on her own because he always finds at least two in the diaper bag and one hidden in her crib.
So very quickly into the season the team dubs the hockey baby with her very own nickname
“Little puck”
Sokka quietly thinks that Yue would have liked that one because her favourite Shakespeare play was midsummer night's dream.
________________________
The team gets Juno and Sokka a fancy running stroller for her birthday/christmas
It was Zuko’s idea
Zuko sometimes comes by to offer to take her for a run when Sokka has exams.
_______________________
Zuko seemed to always be the last to leave the locker rooms, Sokka would usually rush out to pick up Juno from whoever had her unless she had stayed with Couch Dao during practise which she had today.
On days like today Sokka takes his time, cleans and folds his gear, re-tapes his stick for next practise and actually has a real shower. So today he was tucking Juno back in her stroller after changing her as Zuko put the tape away. They were casually talking about the hilarious origins of Pipsqueaks nickname when sokka realized Zuko had a funny look on his face.
“What? Do I have poop on me or something?”
Now Zuko looked even more confused as Sokka looked at his shirt, twisting around to make sure he was free of baby droppings.
“No, you just never look at it, is all. I was trying to figure out what was so -weird about you other than being a crazy goalie, and you don’t look at it.”
“I don’t look at what?”
Zuko gestures to the scared half of his face glumly. “You don’t look at it, you look me in the eyes, always have. It’s weird I guess. You pretending it’s not there.”
“Oh”
“Forget it, sorry.”
“No! It’s just of course I know it’s ther, I’m not pretending its not there, it just seems like whatever happen was probably truamitic, ya know? And - well - okay so tragic backstory time. My Mom was killed in a targeted home invasion by some racists, super fucked up... “
“Holy shit.”
“Yep, anyways everyone knew about it, in the town we lived in, in the next town we lived in, So it was like everyone could see my big truma all the time, it wasn’t up to me to trust people enough to share something that was hard for me and that hurt. It was out of my hands and everyone knew including people I didn’t feel safe with or I didn’t know at all. So I get it, in a way. I see your scar I do, but I get that it maybe comes with a pretty sucky story that’s not mine to make assumptions and judgments on. If I’m worthy of knowing then I will, but I will always look you in the eyes, I’m not going to look at your trauma first because you’re Zuko first.”
Zuko stared at Sokka with his mouth open. Sokka looked away and finished strapping Juno into her stoller before looking back up at the other player. When he did Zuko was looking at the wall, his shoulders turned away from the young father.
“Thank you, and I’m sorry about your Mom… I promise I won’t tell anyone, that scar can stay between us for however long you need.”
And before Sokka could stay anything Zuko turned on his heel and walked quickly from the room.
________________________-
Sokka wasn’t sure what was up with this Zuko guy, everyone else on the team except Haru and Sokka had played with Zuko last year, so they all seemed to have an unspoken understanding of the reserve alt captain. But Sokka couldn’t even get him to smile. Sokka knew he was funny, he was full of 100% organic grass fed dad jokes for goodness sakes! But no, Zuko would not smile, he would not laugh, actually most of the time he seemed to be trying to not talk to Sokka in general. Which was hard considering Zuko was one of the defensemen and it was his job to protect Sokka, you’d think there would be an effort to become friends.
“Maybe he’s uncomfortable with the whole baby thing?” Suggested Teo from the table where he was copying data to a new chart.
“Nahh, I don’t think so, he even said hi to Juno at the first prac - ohhhhhhh” Sokka fell to the floor from where he was sitting with Juno, she took the opportunity of her opponent on the ground and began to climb on her dad.
“What ohhhhhh?”
“I totally flirted with him after that and told him I was queer and he like panic walked out of the locker room.”
“Ugh so do you think he’s homophobic or something?”
“Maybe or something? I don’t get bully vibes from him more like “I act scary so people won’t pretend to like me and then stab me in the back” vibes from this guy. So maybe it’s just a little internalized stuff and he’s not going to beat me up just might not want to talk about it.”
“Well it sucks either way!”
Juno continued to climb around her Dad trying to stuff toys down his shirt and then take them out again. Sokka kept a hand two inches from her back whenever she got close to standing just incase she decided that gravity no longer applied to her and she tumbled over.
“Hey Sokka, do you think he told anyone? Would your spot be in danger if you were outed?”
A cold feeling settled in his stomach “oh shit, I uh, I didn’t think about that… I don’t think I would be kicked off the team. There are policies like that for the school, but I don’t know about how safe I would be from the boys.”
“Oh,” Teo finally looked up from his laptop and set down his highlighter. “You know if you need someone to back you up, I know I can’t take them in a fight but I am friends with some freelance hackers and I could make their lives living hell.”
“Teo, you my man are one scary dude, and the wheels only add intimidation with that tricked out chair. You’re also a really great friend.”
Teo blushed and shrugged “Eh it’s whatever, us queers in engineering trying to change the way people use bionic tech gotta stick together right?”
“Totally, isn’t Uncle Teo awesome June-Bug?” Sokka picked up his daughter and flew her over his head as she wiggled her legs.
“Too too!”
“Uncle Teo?” teo said quietly from the table.
“Oh, well ya, if you want? Juno needs a village right? And one day you and I are going to start a bionics company together, so ya you’re going to be around for a while right?”
“Right.” Teo smiled.
“Toto!” Juno screamed again.
Both of the boys laughed and the night went on.
_______________________________________
Juno was still asleep and Teo was in the house studying so Sokka took the opportunity to go for a run around his building with the baby monitor clipped on his waist band.
It was rare nowadays that Sokka could get a good run in outside, his feet pounding the pavement, a chance to clear his mind.
He was surprised to see that Zuko apparently had the same idea because soon they were matching each other stride for stride around the complex. It was surprising even after weeks of Zuko evading Sokka at any chance they seemed to be in sync.
They were still going strong when Sokka heard Juno fuss from the monitor and slowed to a stop. Zuko halted a few paces ahead and looked confused.
“Are you tired? We can stop-” Zuko started but Sokka quickly waved him off.
“No it’s Juno, I just want to see if she’s going to go back to sleep herself or whether I have to call Teo to pick her up, or if I should go get her. Come on J-Bug settle down,”
Zuko looking curious came to hover over Sokka’s shoulder looking down at the tiny screen which showed Juno in her crib tossing and turning.
“Come on J look your penguin is right there- YES!” Sokka pumped his fist and did a little dance. “My baby went back to sleep, ah I love you!” He continued speaking to the machine and the sky and skipped around before remembering he had an audience.
It looked like Zuko was thinking about smiling and Sokka thought that that might be worth celebrating too.
“Hehe whoops, sorry man. I just haven't been able to run in forever, it's like she knows when I grab my runners and demands to see me.”
“No worries, Sokka.”
So the two hockey players started up a soft pace again around the building. It came to Sokka's mind that he shouldn’t poke the bear but he also had poor impulse control so as he thought it the words came tumbling out of his mouth.
“So have you outed me to all the guys and should I watch my back?”
Now it was Zuko’s turn to stop, he looked like Sokka slapped him.
“What.”
“Ugh! You know, like I can not talk about it and we can just play the game but - should I be making sure that Juno is safe? If she comes to a practise and I’m leaving will I get roughed up by the guys? Because I can take a hit, but my daughter is off limits. Nothing has happened yet so, my guess is you haven't told anyone, but are you going to?”
“No!” Zuko still looked scared “ Never - do I come off as someone who would do that?” He followed up quietly.
“I don’t know what to say dude, you looked scared out of your mind when I flirted with you and practically ran out when I told you I was Bi and ever since you have avoided me, I just assumed you were uncomfortable.”
Zuko looked around as if to check for monsters around them, then he looked at Sokka. “I won’t tell anyone, I haven't, I swear to you that I have your back if you ever want to say anything about it. Juno is safe, I swear it.”
“Whoa that’s a serious tone shift, Um thank you then.”
There was an awkward pause as the two men regarded each other for a moment.
“Just out of curiosity why did you avoid me after? Was it the baby thing?”
“No, it wasn't the baby thing.” zuko mumbled and toed the dirt with his shoe.
“Okay… but were good now right?”
“Ya”
Sokka turned and started to jog again, and soon enough Zuko caught up and they continued for a few more laps. As they were cooling down Zuko still looked amped up, Sokka was surprised, running usually calmed him down but Zuko seemed jumpy.
“Well this was fun! If I can ever join again it would be nice to have company, even company as quiet as you along.”
“Why don’t you bring Juno in her stroller or something?”
Sokka rubbed a hand behind his neck “ Well her stroller is a second hand one we got when she was born, it’s not the kind I can take running without it falling apart or bouncing my babies brains out. And her Mom and I both had much to offer in genetic smarts so I would like my babies brain to be perfect so she can run the world or something.”
“Oh and I guess running strollers are expensive?”
“Ya a bit, and I already spend so much on her clothes, she just won’t stop growing!”
“Too bad, it was also nice running with you.”
“Wow a real Zuko compliment, be still my beating heart!”
Sokka grabbed his chest and fell back and rolled in the grass. Zuko’s lips tilted up just a fraction and butterflies fluttered in sokka’s stomach.
Just then Juno started to cry in earnest and Teo’s voice came over the monitor. “Uh Sokka is her bottle the one in the door of the fridge or do I make a new one?”
Sokka sighed a little then pressed the intercom button on the monitor “Don’t worry about it Teo I will be up in two. Just start telling her the periodic table or something.”
“See you later Zuko”
“Bye Sokka.”
_____________
Sokka’s head was pounding and his vision was blurry, as he stumbled in the dark to the toilet and heaved.
“Fuck.”
At some piont after the sweating and throwing up he dragged himself back to his room to fetch his phone. Juno was fast asleep in her crib because he had a headache last night and homework took forever, so he had put her down early.
Back in the bathroom he rested his head on the cool tile and dialed up his dad with shaky fingers.
After three rings Hakkoda picked up in a panic “Sokka, are you okay? Is Juno okay? Where are you?”
Sokka squinted his eyes at the loud voice of his Dad ringing around his skull. “Dad? I think I have the flu.”
“Oh bud, okay. What’s going on, how can I help?”
“I had a headache last night so I put J down for bed early then I woke up with a fever, I keep throwing up, Dad I -” Sokka felt a lump in his throat and tears sting his eyes. “Dad I don’t want to her her, she was just so small, and I don’t want her to get sick. I know I have to do this, but i love her so much and I dont want to fuck up - “
The tears fall down his cheeks to the floor.
“Oh son, okay. One you love that kid more than anything you would die before hurting her this I know. Two people get sick, people also get better with rest and the I think I can help with that.”
“Dad I know I’m grown up ish, but can you tell me what to do?”
Hakkoda chuckled on the other end of the line. “Sokka, Bato and I will come pick up Juno in 30 minutes, we will drop off some crackers and gatorade too.”
“Dad- “
“Nope Sokka, you asked so I am telling you what we are going to do. We will come and get our baby girl and take her for a few days, You will email your profs and get your homework sent to you, you can only go to class when you don’t have a fever and if you do you’re going to wear a mask, okay?”
“Okay.”
“Good you will email your coaches tell them whats what, when you feel better you can go watch practise, the cool might even be good for the fever, but you will not push yourself. This week will not make or break the rest of your life. So you will sleep, rest, do your work form home, and Juno will play at GB and great Papa’s house. And everything will be okay.”
“Okay. Thank you dad”
“We will be there soon buddy”
So Juno went with his Dad’s and he sent his emails and face planted in his bed and passed out for 6 hours.
Later an hour before practise Sokka’s phone pinged, he groaned and grasped around for his phone.
A text from Fire Prince Zuko
Coaches just said you won’t be at practise tonight. Is everything okay? Is Puck good?
Flu bug, don’t want to mess up that pretty ice with my vomit. Juno seems fine she’s at my Dads house until I’m not dying of the plague
A few minutes went by after that and sokka’s eyes started to fall again. “Ping”
I can drop off soup and tea on my way to practise, which suite is yours in family huas?
Dude its fine I can feed myself
Dude. I’m helping at my uncle’s tea shop today. They have soup and tea, it’s no problem. In fact my uncle insists.
14a second floor
And thank you Z
What are Alt Capts for?
Hakkoda was right, everything was indeed okay in the end. Juno had a blast at her grandparents house and sokka managed to get all of his homework done and even managed to watch a few lectures online courtesy of Teo. Zuko was the anomaly he could’t account for but was grateful for none the less. Whenever he could he stopped by with snacks, soup, tea and even weirder sent cute cat and baby videos at random points during the days.
Within 4 days Sokka felt good enough to go to classes and do some dryland training uring practise and after one more day he was back catching pucks on the rink with his daughter sleeping in the bed next to him one hand fisted on his shirt to make sure her dad didn’t leave.
After that week sometimes Zuko would still stop by with a tea, which Sokka had begun to like even when he wasn’t dying. Except now he would occasionally stay and drink his own tea while they watched juno play on the floor.
Sokka was starting to think he might have a new friend after all…

H-Hi I am new. I thought writing out an idea I had would be a great introduction. I-I like Gang Orca and I thought th-that going to a theme park w-with him would be fun. S-So here is a short x reader story.
Water Theme Park with Orca.
Gang Orca had received a call from a Water theme park. They had been receiving threats of placing bombs or even a shooting. The main reason they asked Orca to attend the park was that half of the park was surrounded by water. There was even tunnels that ran under the park to provide water to all the rides and water slides. Anyone could easily swim in to the tunnels and set a bomb that would kill hundreds of patrons. Orca accepted and even brought along his sidekick.
Y/N had been working for a year so far. Y/N quirk was manipulating liquids and turning them into solids or gas. Usually Y/N can harden water into a weapon and if someone tried to floor an area, she can turn all that liquid into a gas. Y/N can not turn the gas or solid back into a liquid and the bigger the quantity and density of the liquid the more energy she uses. Using her quirk too much can and will kill her. Y/N's suit was a light blue with white waves. The suit was similar to a bathing suit with some of the material wrapping around her arms and legs to form gloves and wet suit shoes. There was padding in the shoes so she can do long patrols with Orca. She also had a mask made to cover half of her face like a wave. Her hero name : CO. Carbon is a solid and Oxygen is a gas. Her name is a play off of her quirk.
Since Gang Orca invited Y/N to join him at the water theme park, they both decided to go undercover as a couple enjoying the fun of a theme park. Y/N was dress in a thin yellow dress that was strapless. Underneath was a black bikini that fit tightly around her curves. Orca was in a white tank top and blue swim trunks. He looked like half of the men at the park that day.
By the looks of things the crowd had a lot of families with screaming kids having fun. Y/N was watching the children with a motherly look on her face. Orca was to busy keeping an eye out for anyone looking suspicious to see that Y/N was walking ahead of him. Y/N stopped behind a group of children that were watching a small puppet show about pirates and a horrible sea creature. If Y/N wasn't her age anyone would take her for being a child. So easy to be entertained by a puppet show. She would have been stuck there the entire time if Orca didn't grab her wrist and pull her along.
"Don't forget that we are still here on business. You need to keep your focused on anyone being suspicious." Orca lectured her.
"If anyone looks suspicious it is you. Staring at every person the looks at you. Even I don't catch your attention." Y/N mumbles that last part.
"Then what do you suggest that I do? Have fun?"
"Yes. We are here is swim wear and haven't even gone on one ride or even a water slide!" Y/N looked at him with begging eyes. She really was like a child.
"Fine. Pick a ride and then we keep looking after." Orca grumbled already impatient.
Y/N grabs his hand and starts to drag him along. She already knew she wanted to go on the biggest water slide. Orca wasn't really upset about having fun, but he was worried that someone could injure so many people. Orca looked at where they were going and knew now that maybe it was a good place to be. So many people were already waiting to go on the slide next.
Y/N stopped next to a beach chair and started to take off her dress. Orca took off his tank top and folded it before setting it on the beach chair. Y/N folded her dress setting it next to Orca's tank top. Orca was still getting other items out of his pocket when Y/N runs to the pool that was connected to the slide. She wanted to get wet before having to stand in line. Orca watched her splash in the water. Her hair getting soaked and her body glistening the the sun. The black bikini she wore now tightened even more with the water. When she stood up out of the water and walked over to Orca her breasts bounced with each step. So many eyes we're on Y/N.
"I am going to get on the slide without you if you don't hurry." She teased him.
Orca cleared his throat and looked away. "Fine, let's go."
Y/N leads the way as Orca watched her from behind. He did his best not to stare at her body, but he could tell others were looking. A bit of jealousy bubbled in his stomach. He only saw Y/N as a sidekick, but now that he has seen her in something other than her hero suit he really wishes she could be his.
Orca shook his head to clear his mind. The line for the slide had shorten enough that Y/N and him didn't have to wait too long. The lifeguard that was working at the top motioned for them to go next. Originally Orca was going to wait for Y/N to go, but since Y/N pulled him along. She sat down on the slide and had Orca sit behind her. Orca pushed against Y/N as the slid down the slide. Y/N had her arms up having fun already. Orca watched her smile as the water on the slide splash on them as they went down. Y/N looked back at Orca with a huge smile.
"If we lean back we will go faster." She yelled at him.
Orca wrapped his arms around her waist and leaned back with her. The speed inceased as they got to the bottom. They shot out of the slide and crashed into the water. It was only a second as Orca lifted up Y/N out of the water. She spat out water that got in her mouth. Orca popped his head out of the water and looked happier than he was.
"That was awesome!" Y/N coughed out as she looked back at Orca.
"It was enjoyable." He hated to admit that he was having fun. He needed to be serious again.
"Fine if you didn't like it then we will go and look, but you have to play a game here. I want to win something to take home." Y/N wiggled out of Orca's grip and head to their things. She picked up her dress and didn't even put it on. She wanted to dry off first.
Orca was standing in the water watching her. He really did want to have fun with her. He thought about it and finally agreed to himself that he would try to win a prize for her to make up for his attitude towards her. There was no reason to do it, but he thought it would make her happy.
Orca got out the pool and put on his tank top. He didn't care it got wet since it should dey anyway. He started to lead Y/N near all the games that had big prizes. He was wondering if one would catch her eye. To no surprise she was already frozen in place. She was staring up at a huge orca stuff animal. Gang Orca walked to her side and looked at the orca plush.
"Now I get it." He walked up to the booth and paid to play the game. It was trying to hit all the cans off a shelf.
"Get what?" Y/N was blushing just enough to show that she was embarrassed.
Orca glared at the cans before picking up the baseball he was to use to knock down the cans. He aimed the ball, stretching his arm back and throwing it as hard as he could. The cans went flying in all directions. The woman in charge of the game was on the ground trying to take cover from the cans. The woman looked up shaking a bit.
"Y-You won!" She yelped in fear.
"We will be taking the big orca." Orca said before taking down the plush himself since the woman wasn't going to be standing up any time soon.
Orca handed Y/N the plush. Y/N looked at it with wide eyes. She held it close and smiled nuzzling it gently.
"Thank you." Her eyes looked up to Orca as he turned away being over whelmed by the cuteness.
"You are welcome. Now let's go to the tunnels. If we find nothing then we can leave and maybe go swimming."
Y/N could tell that Orca was trying to relax for her. She found it very charming. She agreed with him and followed after him to the big Pool of water that had tunnels. Once they were at the edge Orca gave Y/N all his belonging and tank top so then he could go into the tunnels. The tunnels were mainly under water, so Y/N couldn't go with him since she can't hold her breath for that long. Y/N watched Orca dive in. She set his things down along with the orca plush he got for her. She then sat on the edge to dip her legs in the water.
Time went by slowly. Y/N was kicking her legs in the water thinking about what she would do after they left the park. Y/N did like Orca, but she knew that it wouldn't happen. Since she works for him their relationship would get in the middle of work. Plus with his kind heart he probably already has someone or is in love with someone. Y/N's mind was wondering that she didn't even see the black figure swimming below her. Y/N was about to pull her legs out of the water when a large hand grabbed her ankle and pull her into the water. Y/N freaked out for a moment. She kicked and thrashed around in the water. The figure brought her back up to the surface. Y/N gasp for breath as she looks back to see Orca rubbing his nose. Apparently Y/N had kicked his nose.
"I am so sorry Sir!" Since they have been at the park she never mentioned his name or formalities.
"Y/N, you thought you were in danger. It is fine. Also don't use formalities when we are undercover. I came to tell you that there isn't anything in the tunnels. We can head home if you like."
Y/N was being given the choice to end things here or stay longer. She thought about it and was at a point of indecisiveness.
Wh-Which one would you pick?
A) Stay longer
B) Leave

12 DAYS OF FICLETS, FIC 6
Rory x Paris, Gilmore Girls. Also on AO3.
Prompted by @prodigalleverage, #83 - “Stay there. I’m coming to get you.”
****
The sudden need to go swimming wasn’t what Rory would have called a plan, when she mentioned it. It was really more of a desperate attempt to avoid her own thoughts after four days alone with Paris.
They’d agreed to share the room for a week, because the cabins belonged to a friend of the Gellers and Rory wanted a little quiet before she and her mom headed off on their whirlwind tour of Europe. What she hadn’t thought about--but definitely should have--was that a week shut in a room with Paris was going to drive her completely insane.
She liked talking to Paris, Rory tried to remind herself when she started to feel overwhelmed. Conversations with Paris tended to turn into debates, but that was fun most of the time--it kept things interesting. Paris challenged her.
Being the recipient of Paris Geller’s undivided attention was more intense, though, once no one else was around.
All day long, Paris was full of opinions on the books she saw Rory reading, commentary on Rory’s snack choices, rants about politics even when Rory didn’t bring up the state of the world...and since Paris talked in her sleep, the nights were no less peaceful.
It didn’t help that some of the things Paris said while she was dreaming were really confusing. There was no casual way to ask Paris if she dreamed about her, but Rory was officially wondering. Sometimes, Paris said nicer things in her dreams than she ever said to Rory’s face.
Some nights, Rory dreamed about Paris too.
On day five, she couldn’t take it anymore, and she shut her book harder than was necessary, setting it aside as though she could push her distracting thoughts away along with it.
“Want to go swimming?”
“Swimming?”
Paris looked at her like Rory was inviting her along on a spacewalk.
“Yeah, you know, swimming? In the water? Winter Harbor Bay is right out there, or so the map tells me.”
The bay had to be big enough for them both to find a patch of quiet water to swim in, Rory thought. A chance for her brain to settle down, without Paris noticing how frayed her nerves had become. “I don’t know about you, but the sunlight could do me good.”
“The sunlight will give you cancer.” Paris let go of her pen and frowned. “Do you even have a swimsuit?”
“No, I’m going to swim naked.” Rory rolled her eyes. “Yes, I packed one. I haven’t worn it in ages, but as far as I know, it still fits. Come on, Paris, live a little. We’re ninety percent water--think of it as a homecoming.”
“That’s not even true,” Paris argued. “I hate when people say that. Our blood is ninety percent water, but our bodies are more like sixty percent water--and that’s an average.”
All that mattered to Rory was Paris’s grudging walk to her suitcase, where she began digging for her own bathing suit, proving that Rory had convinced her to come along.
“I don’t know,” she mused with a straight face. “Some days I definitely feel like there’s more water sloshing around in here than that supposed average.”
“Because you drink coffee by the gallon.”
“Speaking of which.” Rory grinned at her. “I’m going to finish mine while you change into your suit.”
“Hey, I never said I was coming,” Paris shot back.
“You’re holding your swimsuit.”
“That could be because I’m ready to offer it to you, if yours doesn’t fit.”
“It’s not, though.”
Paris and her crossed arms were no match for Rory’s hopeful grin. She sighed. “No, it’s not. But I’m telling you now, Gilmore, if the bay is full of people or it has a smell...you’re on your own.”
“Noted.”
The spot Rory found for them was, in fact, deserted, though she was too breathless from the drive there to offer Paris an ‘I told you so.’ Watching her life flash before her eyes was an interesting experience when she only had eighteen years of life to remember. She would not be letting Paris drive them back.
“It smells normal to me,” she did say as they set their towels down on the sand.
“Yeah, yeah.”
It’d been years since Rory swam for fun, and her lack of athletic coordination remained consistent when it came to water sports, but at least the bay started out shallow and she barely needed to do more than kick and paddle.
“I’ll be over here,” she told Paris as she drifted away, rolling over to her back and letting herself float.
Paris watched her go, baffled by the entire situation.
Was she supposed to do that too, just float? Lie there in silence, doing nothing, staring up at the sky? Why would anybody choose that over a good book in a climate-controlled environment?
It was one of things that had always made Rory so fascinating to her: how different they were. She seemed content, just taking it easy, and that was true for Rory in a lot of situations that gave Paris hives.
Though her fascination with Rory had evolved over the years, into something less academic, and something harder to ignore, it hadn’t gone away. She knew now that it wouldn’t--she was never going to meet anybody quite like Rory Gilmore.
Rory glanced her way every minute or so, both to keep an eye on Paris and to gauge her own location, since the sky above was not helpful in making sure she didn’t float too far out towards the sea.
“Hey, Paris, you should try relaxing,” she suggested, grinning when Paris responded in sharp Portuguese.
Though Paris never shifted to floating on her back like Rory had, she did claim her own part of the water and stuck to swimming there, subdued laps that gave Rory the quiet she was looking for.
It lasted long enough that Rory almost forgot she’d been freaking out so much about Paris’s proximity, and what it meant, and how things felt different now that they weren’t high school rivals anymore.
“Oh, god. Oh god, there’s something wrapped around my ankle.”
From Rory's location yards away, she thought maybe she misheard, at first. “What?”
“I don’t know what it is, but it’s cold, and it’s slimy, and it’s moving around my ankle--are there eels here?”
Though Rory wasn’t relaxed and floating anymore, a panicking Paris wasn’t the safest to approach. She settled for treading water, watching her across the distance. “How would I know if there are eels?”
“It was your idea to go swimming today while not a single other soul was setting foot in the water!” Paris called back. “Maybe there was a reason for that. Maybe that should have told us something.”
“I didn’t drag you out here, you know. You accepted my invitation. And I don’t think there are eels. Even if there are, it’s not like eels are poisonous.”
“Oh, now you’re an eel expert?” Paris moved sideways, freezing after she started to head towards Rory’s side of the water.
“Paris?”
“I’m stuck.”
“That’s not funny.”
“Am I known for my hilarious comedic timing? I’m stuck!” Paris’s frantic splashing, combined with the fear on her face, nudged Rory into action.
“Stay there. I’m coming to get you.”
“Stay there,” she could hear Paris muttering as she swam to her side. “Where am I going to go?”
“Calm down, okay?” Rory tried to grab hold of her hands, not surprised when Paris pulled them away, out of her reach.
“I am calm! I don’t even need your help, I’m fine--it’s not like I’m drowning. I know how to swim.”
“Of course you do. I’m just going to dive down and see what’s got you caught, it’ll only take a second.”
Rory didn’t bother phrasing that part as a question; it was quicker to jump right to the solution than give Paris another opening to argue with her.
She needed less than a minute underwater to detangle Paris from the culprit, which Rory was secretly grateful was not an eel of any kind. Sure, they weren’t poisonous, but she wasn’t eager to meet one, either.
“Gotcha,” she declared when she reemerged, blinking at Paris through the water streaming down her face.
Paris wiggled her toes, relieved to feel herself bob up and down. Their part of the bay was just deep enough that the water would go over her head if she relaxed.
“It was seaweed,” Rory told her, shoving her hair back behind her ears. “It’s okay.”
For a second, Paris had gotten distracted thinking about how much darker the water made Rory’s hair look. Which led to thinking about how starkly it stood out against her pale skin...which meant she was thinking about Rory’s skin again. It was becoming a problem.
So maybe she overreacted a little when she tuned back in to what Rory had said.
“Obviously it’s okay, Rory. It was just seaweed, not a shark or something. God.”
“I never said it was a--”
“You know, I’m not some damsel in distress screaming my lungs out for a lifeguard, whatever you might have been thinking.”
“Damsel in distress?”
Paris was ramping up to full rant mode, Rory could tell, and it was exactly the opposite of what she’d come out to the bay to find. For a second, she considered just turning around and swimming off, leaving Paris to talk to the water.
“And I definitely wasn’t panicking, for god sake, so just get that idea out of your head right now. If you tell anybody I was, I’ll deny it.”
Rory was out of patience with the paranoia, the ridiculous idea that she was eager to tell people about a day when some seaweed scared Paris Geller. She was sick of Paris’s complete inability to let anybody else get a word in, ever.
And most of all, she was frustrated by how things like that used to seriously annoy her, how Paris used to seriously annoy her...how she used to live inside a box in Rory’s brain labeled ‘rude and impossible and vexing’ where Rory could keep her at a comfortable distance.
Well, she wasn’t at a distance now. Paris was a foot away with water dripping off the tip of her nose and she was taking a deep breath in preparation for her next round of argument, and nothing about that should have been cute but it was, which was probably how impulse overcame any common sense that had been ruling Rory’s brain.
She glided forward and kissed her.
Paris jolted backwards as soon as their lips brushed, stunned, almost dipping under the surface of the bay before she steadied herself.
Sure, in the moment, that felt like a good solution, Rory thought, backing off in response.
It was only then, while Paris was staring at her with wide, blank eyes, that Rory remembered how often her impulsive decisions were her worst ones.
“I’m sorry,” she offered up. Deep down, she both was and she wasn’t--so she had to hope a half-apology still counted.
“I--I don’t...” Paris trailed off, her eyes still huge as she shook her head.
Rory liked her? Rory liked her, like that? Little birds braiding her hair in the morning seemed more possible than Rory liking her back. Paris had been holding on to her feelings so tightly, for years. For good reason. It didn’t make sense.
Paris was too quiet. Paris was almost never quiet. She must have really screwed up, Rory realized. Maybe in a way she couldn’t fix.
“Paris, listen. That was...I didn’t mean to--”
She stopped trying to think of a good explanation as Paris moved towards her, reaching for her hands. She was still looking down at them, at their fingers interlocking, when Paris’s mouth found hers.
This time, it wasn’t Rory acting on impulse. It was an exploration, both of them taking their time. Paris freed her hands to touch Rory’s hair, shifting her lips to the corner of Rory’s mouth when she smiled.
Paris kissed exactly like Rory had imagined--now that she could admit she had spent time imagining it.
She didn’t soften her angles, she was intense and her fingers were firm when they stroked up Rory’s spine. But there were flashes of brightness there, too, in the grin that Paris pressed into her collarbone, the way her thumbs brushed Rory’s ribs so lightly she shivered.
Rory tasted sweet, like she was wearing lip gloss instead of seawater. When she curled her hands around Paris’s waist and pulled her close, they sank so deep into kisses that for a second they forgot to float.
In the past, all of Paris’s kisses had been with boys she found disappointing, and part of her had assumed that was because they were boys. As the two of them moved back towards the shore by wordless agreement, their hands joined under the water, Paris wondered if all along, it was because they hadn’t been Rory.

breathless, a fic by corellians-only
Tumblr media
“Sorry about your cigarette,” you mumble, crossing your arms to ward off the chill. your eyes focus on a triad of water droplets suspended on his left bicep even as he takes another step closer, vaporizing the gap between you.
“ ‘s not a problem,” he returns with a half-grin. It makes you weak. It shouldn’t. But it does. A new feeling is rapidly bubbling up to replace the onslaught of adrenaline. Effervescent heat starts fermenting in your core — he runs a hand through shaggy hair, now limp and loose around his face — he reaches around you — his palm skates over your bare arm — he’s looking at you perplexed, repeating his question more insistently now.
“would you like one? A cigarette?”
your brain — your eyes, really — toggles between his azure eyes and the pack of Marlboro’s now secure, comfortable, in his palm. His fingers, still damp judging by the condition of the cardboard, are extended towards you, a link, a bridge — an offering? — in that charged space between you and him. His eyes drag themselves from the cigarette curled in his fingers ((what would it feel like to have his fingers curled around your wrist, around your—)) to your face in time to catch your nod.
He watches you. Watches you pluck the white stick from his fingers. Watches you place it to your lips. Watches you lean forward, this time foisting yourself into his space, that forbidden no-man’s-land. Watches you watch him — he’s fumbling with the lighter, more awkward now that he’s not in the water — he’s got it now, the flame appearing with a muted click, and he’s raising the fire to your lips ((you haphazardly wish he would set you on fire in a different way)) — you inhale and close your eyes as the heady scent fills you.
Reluctantly you take a step back, exhaling the smoke and turning your head as you do so to avoid his face. The wind changes, though — what’s that they say about the best-laid plans? — and it’s thrown back into him and he splutters and coughs, pausing his own efforts. your jaw drops. Aw, hell.
“This just doesn’t seem to be my day, does it?” The remark, and your self-deprecating smile, brings a hitherto unseen light to his eyes. Something more than interest, more than mischievousness. maybe it’s both. Maybe it’s neither. his rejoinder is too quick for you to angst over it for more than a moment.
“why would you say that?” the cigarette twirls in his hand, like that kid who sits behind you in geometry does with his pencil when he’s bored. There’s no accusation dancing at the edge of his tone.
you shrug. Squint as the sun starts to make an appearance again. “Well, I nearly drowned, for starters” you drawl. His eyes, those ungodly aquamarine orbs, are boring into you, so you take another drag of your cigarette. Christ. It’s been a while.
“Near-drowning is a pretty low threshold for a shitty day.” The upwards lilt of his voice tells you he’s just messing around, so you roll your eyes. A thought seizes you.
“Well, I do you have you to thank for the ‘nearly’ part, don’t I?” you muse, matching his airy, unaffected tone. It’s your turn to examine him, now, and you rake your eyes over his form, patches of corded muscle still wet, glistening in the sun.
from the corner of eye you see him bite his lip. another impulse screams at you and you listen. You reach out and tug the lighter from his grasp — his hand clutches at the now-phantom object, reaching at nothingness — you take his other hand, the one with the Marlboro, and raise it to his lips — you murmur a few words that cause his eyebrows to shoot up in gentle surprise.
“Will you permit me?”
he nods ((once, twice, rapidly, easily)) and maybe you’re a fool but it seems like his breath hitches and his eyes flicker down to your lips when you light his cigarette.
He nods again, this time in thanks. He tosses the pack onto the table, and the lighter joins it quickly thereafter. it’s the least you could do, you say, as though you did this sort thing — share cigarettes with attractive half clothed life guards — all the time. Maybe you did, in another life. He wouldn’t know.
“I’m Ben.”
“Hi.”
there’s a silence. a few heart beats? half-dozen light years? You’ll never know. He runs his hand through his long hair again ((not quite to his collarbone, but shit, it’s better looking than yours)) and you says something that gives rise to a smirk playing across his diamond-cut features.
“I already know who you are.” Another long drag. A sidelong glance. Strains of The Cranberries waft over from over the iron fence. He shrugs. Another drag, maybe two. “I like the Indigo Girls better.” Another pause. “But Rites of Passage was better than Swamp Ophelia.”
“1200 Curfews is the best of both.” your eyes narrow. “Don’t avoid the topic, Ben. How’d you know who I was?”
A toss and vigorous stamp of your foot and your cigarette joins his, dead in the dirt.
He laughs and the heat in your stomach is back ((did it ever go away)) and it’s creeping through your rib cage straight to your heart and it’s climbing through you and creeping to your fingertips and trickling down to everywhere, everywhere and you grasp onto the table behind you with urgency and it’s all you can do stand upright, damnit and the rickety table sways under the sudden stress.
Hands — strong, sweet ((can hands be sweet)) immediately reach out to steady you, clutching your forearms, holding you in place — pinning you down, ((god you wish)) — thumbs caress your muscled shoulders in small circles — his head is bent, obscuring his vision — trying to get a better look at you — you nod, yes you’re okay, if you really knew me you’d know I was a klutz — he nods — smirks — he already knew that, knew you.
“You’ve been at the pool nearly every day this summer.”
once more he reaches around you and this time, Ben emerges with a towel. He wraps it around you gently, authoritatively, no doubt having noticed the goosebumps on your sensitive flesh. a hand tugs at the edges of the cotton cloth near your neck, dragging it back from slipping off completely. It lingers. He meets your eyes for the first time in what feels like years. You can breathe again now.
“Even if your head’s been buried in books, your friends, they’re still talking about you. Trying to get your attention.” He cants his head. “So how’s The End of History? Worth the hype?” Hands are near, around you, always. Chlorine and salt and sweat and cigarettes envelop you both, heavy, but not cloying.
“You know Fukuyama?” he simply looks at you and nods. “Well, he makes an interesting argument, but I don’t think he adequately rejects Huntington’s thesis.”
Ben smiles, a brilliant, radiant act that could act as your life force for days, you’re sure of it, you would do anything to make sure he smiled like this the rest of his life, he’s so beautiful. “Wise words from a wise woman.”
A man — boy? — yells over the fence — hey, kenobi! — that politics and diplomacy never won over any girls, tell her about the time in the Sheddu Maad neighborhood — he ducks his head — tells Anakin to shove off, mate, leave it alone.
You laugh at his embarrassment, only detectable because you’ve been analyzing him, only because he seems to make sense to you the way no one else does, only because he saved your life, how the hell would you know?
A hand scratches the back of his neck. “You wanna get out of here?” Ben ignores the jibing of his friend and speaks quietly, assuredly, like he knows you’ll say yes.
The fire surges in you again and you wonder what it would be like for that voice to tell you to hold still and you haven’t even finished giving form and sound to your assent when he’s wresting the towel off of your shoulders and pulling the baggy white lifeguarding t shirt over your head and his muscles are bunching with the effort ((and for your benefit, you suspect)).
The towel gets draped gracefully over a lightly tanned arm, the cigarettes and lighter and keys tossed into the pocket of his now-dry swim trunks, your book is secured in the crook of an elbow.
Ben grabs your hand and starts leading you to his car with an errant grin ((shit, he’s strong)). It’s a make and model you don’t recognize. He makes quick work of the necessities, tossing notebooks and periodicals and a set of brass knuckles into the backseat. the towel and your book join the island of misfits, but he’s more careful about those things. he’s like you. He doesn’t do this often. More interested in words and cigarettes than Alicia Silverstone’s clothes in Clueless.
He doesn’t let go of your hand. The nail of his thumb is tracing patterns in your palm and it’s achingly tender and the faintest bit teasing and just enough to grip his hand a little harder than necessary and you ponder how you can exact revenge for his antics.
Rummaging complete, he turns to face you. He’s serious. You can see it in his eyes — they’ve changed — they’re a more delicate shade of blue now, more like glinting sapphire than cerulean — Ben turns so you’re in between him and the car. His hair, too, has changed color, more copper-toned with flecks of gold. You like it better like that, and you tell him so.
“one thing left.”
“What’s that?” you hope you don’t sound breathless. Or maybe you do, and you decide you don’t care. He’s probably going to kiss you anyway. What’s the sense in not telling him you want him to, with all the ladylike weapons you have in your arsenal? He’s nervous now. His thumb has stilled. Ben’s eyes are the color of the sea before a storm, a rippling kaleidoscope of blues and half-greens.
still, he smiles, and it reaches those tempestuous eyes, crinkling and compressing their thunder and lighting around the edges.
a kiss imprinted on your knuckles — his mouth against you — a tongue grazes over your skin, tasting for the first time — you stare unabashedly — the heat has reached your cheeks now, and you don’t even care — his thumb replaces his mouth now, drifting over you the peaks and valleys of your hand.
“May you permit me?” He murmurs gingerly, echoing your previous words with obstinate formality.
and you, too, mimic him, simply nodding. Your hands drop as he leans forward and —
Oh.
the pressure of his lips on yours is feather-light. It’s seeking. Reassuring. Gentle. Exploratory.
But you do not want gentle. You are too far gone for that.
Your tongue insistently licks the seam of his lips and his gasp of surprise gains you entrance to his mouth — he retaliates with a gentle nip on your lower lip — hands move — now on his stubbly cheeks, now threading through his hair — tugging, grasping for purchase for your own stability as much as for pleasure.
he moans again when your fingers rake his scalp and his hands go to your hips, skimming under his oversized t-shirt and gripping your waist, holding you in place even as your legs seem to fall open of their own accord, at this juncture when instinct and pleasure formulate a compound, a melange, a hydrogen bond with irrationally high ionization energy.
Ben’s tongue delves into your mouth ((dominance)) and his chest brushes against yours and he tips his head to get a better angle while his left hand abandons its station on your hip and traverses bare skin, hiking upwards. a mewl erupts from the back of your throat.
he’s migrated to kissing — biting, really — your neck — your head has fallen back against the warm metal of the car — eyes fluttered shut — hands in his hair, scraping at his bare back — fuck, he’s good — it’s not enough —
a car horn startles the both of you. he lifts his head, blinking as though he’s been rudely jolted awake from an REM state. Ben eventually straightens and you follow suit, gathering yourself off the car and twiddling with the edges of your braid.
It’s you who laughs first ((laughing with swollen lips)) and you’re so glad you do. Ben smiles again, that jaw-dropping display of warmth and aliveness it makes your heart skip a ((non-proverbial)) beat. that’s happened so many times in the last few minutes you can’t believe you have yet to pass out.
He presses a kiss to the corner of your mouth. “ready to get out of here?” a kiss to your cheek. “for real this time?” another to your nose. His eyelashes brush up against your skin — left breathless at the simple intimacy.
you beam up at him. “yes, Ben. I’m ready.”
Fin.

Prompts for Beach/Pool Day
Dialogue Prompts
1) "The sun's out and the water smells not good." "I know, isn't it great?" "No. Why can't we stay inside?" "You have to get sunlight or you'll probably die." "I'm not a plant!" 2) "Let's go swimming, the ocean's right there!" "Absolutely not! Do you know how many creatures are living in a drop of water from the ocean?" "No because I'm not a nerd." 3) "I can't swim." "You're a full grown person though. No one ever chucked you in the water and told you to swim or die?" "What? No! Did that happen to you?" "Yeah." "That's awful!" "Yeah, but you know what?" "What?" "I can swim." 4) "My ice cream's melting!" "Eat faster." "But then my head hurts!" "Then don't eat it that fast." "But then it melts." "Oh my god, I will drown you." 5) "I love seeing those big boats all the way out there, they look so small, they make me feel like I'm a woman from the forties waiting for my strong sailor lover's ship to dock so he and I can spend a magical night together that'll result in my pregnancy. And he and I aren't married but he finds out about the baby and promises to make an honest woman out of me, but then he gets called back to the ship and I spend the next few months coming to the beach, rubbing my stomach and wondering when he'll return. And of course I go into labor and I get upset thinking maybe he's never coming back and I'll have to do this on my own. But then he rushes into the room and holds my hand and the doctor delivers our baby and they're so beautiful, they've got his eyes. And he promises to make me the happiest woman in the world and I just whisper back 'You already have, Robert.'" "Who's Robert? All I asked you was 'Are those boats out there?' I didn't ask for your sailor fantasy story." "Well, you should have. Maybe you should ask for more stories from me sometime. Robert certainly would." 6) "Wanna go swimming?" "It's winter." "So? What are you scared of a little hypothermia? Come on, don't be a chicken." 7) "Dude...I think there's something in the water." 8) "What the fuck was that? I just felt something swim by my feet!" 9) "Those waves look pretty high, maybe we should go back." "No way, it'll be fun!" 10) "You gotta help, A's stuck in the riptide!" 11) "If you go out on that ship there's a good chance you'll die out there." 12) "There's the boat...why aren't they in it? Person A, why aren't they in it?!" 13) "Why don't we go diving and see what kind of fish live deep under the water?" "That's how you discover terrifying creatures and get eaten alive so why don't you go fuck yourself?" "Wanna build sandcastles then?" "Yeah, sure." 14) "Wanna buy a boat and make money as deep sea fishers?" "You want to anger the sea gods? Yeah, I don't think so." 15) "Where are we going again?" "This is the place where all those feet end up washing up on shore and they don't know why." "Can we do just do one normal thing? For once in our lives?" 16) "Dude, we just found a body on the beach, wanna go see it?" "Ew. What the fuck?!" "It's got a lot of bite marks on it and it's bloated from being in the water too long." "That's disgusting. Let me get my keys and you can show me where it's at." 17) "Why's the government out here?" "I hear they got video of a unidentified fish out here and they found out it's real so they're trying to find it." "What kind of fish? Like megalodon?" "I heard they think it's a mermaid." “Ah, so less cool then.” 18) "Holy shit! You have a fish tail!" "Holy shit! You have human legs!" "..." "Yeah, see how fucking stupid you sound pointing out the obvious like that?" 19) "I found this shell and it reminded me of you." "Is it because it's ugly and incomplete without its other half?" "What? No! It's cause it's shiny on the inside and I thought you'd like it." 20) "Look at this colorful giant pearl I found!" "That's a bouncy ball."
Regular Prompts
1) A and B are in a relationship and decide to go sailing. A is hesitant because they've never been in the ocean and don't know how to swim. Despite this they go sailing. When they hit bigger waves A falls in and they get dragged by the waves unable to get back in the boat. When the boat is dragged too far away A notices a tail popping out of the water. Thinking it's a shark they start kicking hard and wildly but when they see a person's face they freeze completely. The creature introduces themselves as C and gives them the ability to be like them in the water and takes them to their kingdom. A gets so swept away in this world they forget about B for a while until the others mention the surface and A remembers. But by this time C's really attached to them. They have to decide to either return to the human world for B or stay with C. 2) A goes to the beach and ends up almost drowning while attempting to surf, only to be saved by lifeguard B just in time. B remembers them and constantly asks A if they want them to teach them how to surf. A says no and wipes out multiple times before admitting they need help learning. B helps and is happy to be around A more. 3) A and B haven't admitted their feelings for each other yet so their friends set up a beach and games, forcing the two to work as partners to win. 4) A and B are on rival teams for volleyball and have been competing every summer against each other. They're tied this year and once they both make it to the finals it'll decide who the winner really is since they wont be coming back to play anymore due to them going off to college. They don't like each other but outside volleyball they spend a lot of time together. After all that time and the competition is over they decide winning isn't important and share a kiss, both sad to be parting ways. (Bonus if they end up as roommates because they both applied to the same college.) 5) A's always had a thing for B but B's never noticed A before until they all go to the beach with friends and A shows up in a bathing suit that looks very good on them. 6) A and B are determined to build a huge house out of sand at the beach even if it kills them. 7) A and B go to a nude beach except they start to notice no one else is naked and A's starting to feel like they may have taken a wrong turn at that last sign. 8) A and B go to the beach but find dead animals everywhere concluding something isn't right. When they find people washing up things become increasingly scarier. A brings some of the sand and some of the water to a their scientist friend who informs them that it's not the sand or water. When strange writing appears and they see a mysterious woman they research her only to find out she’s a sea witch who is angry and that they must figure out a way to appease her or she’ll have to move onto land. 9) A wakes up on a beach but doesn't know who or where they are. They're found by doctor, Person B and brought to the hospital and there are no missing persons reports and none of their DNA is in the system. They can't remember where they live or anything about their past. All A can remember is the ocean and so B takes them back by themselves and soon they're in the water and that's how they realize A's not human and in fact a water dragon. 10) Strange items wash up on the beach and A's collecting them while B thinks they're trash. When they realizes all the items fit together like a puzzle it unlocks a message from Atlantis telling them they need help from the human world and they're immediately transported their and given things to help them breathe underwater. They meet mermaids and eventually help them. When they do they're given the option to become mermaids like them if they want. (Bonus if they pick this but also decide to come up to the surface for food.)

Lasagna || Wren & Chanel
Redo of Wren and Chanel’s first conversation when he returned to White Lake @chrysolites
Wren: Hey idk if ur mom told u but i moved back to town, r u still next door?
Chanel: Lawrence?
Wren: Wren, but yeah 😀
Chanel: oh sorry lmao but no my mom didn't tell me, she's been busy lately. how long are you staying?
Wren: just wondering, i ran into her and she insisted on giving me your number haha
Wren: I'm moving here permanently actually
Chanel: omg... im sorry, was she annoying?
Chanel: really? wow that's fun! maybe we should catch up sometime
Chanel: if you want
Wren: she didn't recognize me at first, but she was just talking about when we were kids
Wren: rory's out for the night, but me and nana are having lasagna if you want to come by for dinner? She's heading out pretty quick for her book club, so maybe we could watch a movie or something
Wren: catch up, we could roller blade?
Chanel: probably cause it's been so long, sorry about that. her brain is not that big
Chanel: sure, im not doing anything today
Chanel: do you still roller blade?? i do! we can totally do that
Wren: I haven't in a long time, but I'm down to be a total clutz
Wren: head over around 7?
Chanel: sounds good!
Wren had set the table and was helping Nana set up the kitchen, "You excited to see your old friend Laurie?" asked Nana with that special glean in her eye. "Uh yeah, it's whatever" said Wren shrugging it off, he was kind of nervous to see her after so long. But he knew that he was looking a lot better, and he was excited to see the look on her face. That validating look that would affirm for him that he had gotten a lot better looking. He'd been recovered for a while, and he was feeling good, like he didn't need to see someone in town for mental health. He heard a knock at the door and he headed over, "I got it" he said to Nana and she just smiled to herself and took the lasagna out of the oven. "Hey" said Wren as he opened the door for her.
Chanel put in the extra effort to put on something cute. She went with a pink top that ties up in the front with a matching skirt. Not too revealing cause Nana would be there but enough to show Wren how good she looks. Chanel was always told that she was a pretty girl, but her confidence was at an all time high. Before leaving the house, she texted her mom that she'd be at his house. She didn't want to think about the conversation Tiffany had with Wren, she must have made Chanel look like such a dweeb. As she made her way over to his house, she could feel the nerves kick in. She hadn't seen him in years, he never even wrote to her. Neither of them did, but Chanel was just too scared to send the letters, she tried. She knocked on he door and took a deep breath before Wren opened the door. Her eyes widened as she slowly looked up at him, "Oh. Hi." she said, putting on a sweet smile. What the fuck happened to him? She always loved her little Laurie, but he was so tall and really hot. Like really hot. "It's been so long. You look good." she said softly. There was clearly a lot going on in her head.
Wren would have noticed how she looked at him more, but he was distracted. Respectfully distracted. Don't look, don't think about it, you've seen more from her instagram, you got this he thought to himself as she told him that he looked good. That was all he needed to hear, that validation that it wasn't all in his head. It was what he was most looking forward to that one summer he was supposed to come back, but he ended up going to rehab instead. But that was the old Wren, he was feeling healthy and confident: ready to be back here. "You look great too" said Wren going in to give her a hug, which ended up being a little bit of an awkward hug to begin with. "Oh Chanel!" said Nana as she came up and gave the girl a hug as well, "Dinner is all set, but I'll only be here for a little while so you two can catch up better" said the woman as she led them into the dining room and everyone sat down.
Chanel loved hearing that she looked good, it's all she ever heard but it was just more fuel for her ego. If she had known he looked like this, maybe she would've worn something more reveling. Nana was cool, she would have understood. She was taken back as he went in for a hug, but she wrapped her arms around him awkwardly and patted his back. Chanel's smile widened once she saw Nana, she didn't see her as often anymore but that was mostly her fault. Seeing Nana reminded her of Wren. "Thanks for inviting me, I've always loved your cooking." she said with a nod. "We do have a lot to catch up on." she looked up at Wren as she passed by him to go into the dining room, her tone being a little suggestive. "So are your parents here?" she asked Wren as she took a seat. "Why did you guys decide to come back?"
Wren just assumed that was how she talked, not that she was being suggestive. He just didn't pick up on things like that at all, especially not from her. Wren knew he looked good, but he didn't think that he looked Chanel level good so there was nothing to even consider. He had friend-zoned himself. "My parents are off in Europe teaching and writing, they're cultural anthropologists which I could never have pronounced last time we hung out" he joked, it was a big word and they hadn't seen each other since they were small. "But Rory and I wanted to finish high school in the states, so we decided to move in with Nana" he replied, he was nervous to go back to school in a month or so. Luckily most people wouldn't remember him or recognize him anyways. "White Lake has a great team, so it just all works out" Wren said with a soft smile.
"Right, cultural anthropologists." Chanel repeated back with a smile. "I think I use to tell my parents that they worked with culture and they'd just ignore it." she shrugged her shoulders. "But that's exciting for them." It was a little sad to think that Chanel wouldn't be seeing Wren's parents right now, but if he was living here permanently, she assumed his parents would eventually visit. Her brows raised once she mentioned a team, "Oh you're going to be on a team? Like the debate team?" she asked. Chanel just assumed it would be something like a debate team and not a sports team. He never played on a sports team when they were younger.
Wren realized that she really didn't know him at all anymore, which was weird for him. They used to know everything about each other, "Basketball" said Wren to clarify, "I used to do swimming and lacrosse too, but I'm slowing down a little and focusing more on just the one" Wren stated, "What are your extra curriculars now?" he asked, already knowing she did cheerleading. He'd looked her up on instagram on several occasions. Luckily she didn't know that, so it just looked like he was making conversation. Nana was just serving up the lasagna.
Chanel tried to not look so shocked by the answer but she was. It made her wonder how much he's changed since they last saw each other. She definitely changed. He was always so sweet, he'd probably hate the person she is now. "Wow, you were doing so much. That must have been fun. We could always go swimming together when you're free." she told him with a smile. She just looked great in her bikinis and thought he'd appreciate the sight. Who wouldn't? "I'm on the cheer team, been doing it since freshman year. So I guess I'll be cheering you on at your games." she said in a sweet tone. "Thanks." she nodded at Nana as she was served her food. "It looks amazing."
"Yeah, I'm lifeguarding down at the country club" said Wren with a smile, he had thought it was a good way to keep busy and make friends before school started. He had already made one good friend, so that was an improvement from last time he was in White Lake. He really only had two friends when he left, not that he had managed to stay in contact with either of them. "That will be so sweet, I'll also be cheering at the games" said Nana with a laugh as she sipped her wine. "So you must know Valerie" said Wren with a smile, blushing a little but not too noticeably as he dug into his food.
Chanel started eating the food when Wren brought up Valerie. Ew. Out of all people, he wants to talk about her. "Valerie Richie?" she asked with a straight face. "Yeah, she's on the team." Unfortunately. she kept the thought to herself. "Why? Did you know before you moved? I don't really remember if you did." That was a lie. She knew Valerie and Wren did not talk to each other back then.
"Funny enough, I never met her before. She must have been in different classrooms all those years" said Wren thinking about it, he hadn't even known how long she had lived here. "I was looking for a present for Nana when I ran into her, and we ended up going on a sort of date and then an actual date. She's really nice" said the boy smiling to himself as he ate another forkful of lasagna. "Do you like being on the team with her?" he asked.
Chanel stayed quiet for a second, she wasn't exactly sure how to respond to this. She didn't know he had such bad taste in girls. She also questioned how long he's been in town. Wren was already going on dates with other girls and he only texted her cause her mom gave him her number. He must not even want her over. Maybe what she thought back then was true, and Wren just didn't really want anything to her. "Actually no I don't." she said casually. "We don't get along, never have." she shrugged her shoulders. "Um, just wondering but how long have you been back?"
Wren was surprised that Chanel didn't get along with Valerie, she was such a nice girl. Well, they both were. Maybe it was a weird long term rivalry or something, he was sure they would work it out soon enough. I mean, now they have Wren in common. Well he hoped they would. Chanel was one of his oldest friends, and he would hate to have her not want to be in his life. He decided to not say anything, "Like three/four days" said Wren candidly. He had spent the first day with Nana and Rory getting settled, then he met Valerie in town the next day and they went out the day after that. Nana interrupted, "Oooooh, okay I definitely have to go to book club, Mrs. Street just found out from her husband who the mayor is having that affair with" said Nana laughing to herself a little, "Gotta go hear the gossip" she said as she got up, "Chanel it was so lovely to see you" she added as she gave Wren a kiss on the top of his head and headed out.
Chanel nodded at the answer that was given to her. It wasn't that long, but deep down in her heart she kind of hoped she'd be one of the first people he went to see. But she understood, they weren't like they used to be. "Oh, well I'm glad you're back. I've missed you." she said with a genuine smile. Chanel turned to Nana as she spoke, the smile instantly disappearing as she mentioned the mayor's affair. She could feel her heart drop. This wasn't how any of this was supposed to go. Now Nana is gonna hate Chanel and her family too. "Huh?" she snapped out of it and looked at up at the woman. "Oh right, yeah. It was nice seeing you too." she turned over to Wren and forced a smile. "So... this lasagna. It's really good." she said, playing with the food on her plate. Chanel didn't know what to say, but she felt like she needed to distract Wren enough to not ask questions.
Wren started eating some salad as Nana left and he smiled and waved, excited to get to spend time with just Chanel. They could watch snow dogs or they could go roller skating. The options were ... well they weren't endless but they were something. "I can't believe how much drama this town has" said Wren just making conversation, not knowing any better. "Does the mayor have kids or anything? That kinda sucks that everyone is talking about it" he added.
"Yeah, it's sucks." Chanel spoke quietly. It's all people were talking about and now that everyone knew it was her mom, people were starting to give her nasty looks now. She hadn't done anything but people had already made their minds up about her. "Um yeah he does. They go to our school, one son and one daughter." Chanel looked up at Wren as she spoke, she felt like avoiding eye contact with him would make her look suspicious for some reason. She didn't even want to think about how Juliette and Montag were feeling. They probably felt the same way she did, but she avoided them at all cost. "You've missed a lot." she forced out a laugh, trying to make light of the situation.
"I feel like I have" said Wren, "But Stevie's still here, and Taron. I should really reach out to them" he said with a shrug. He knew he should, it was just that he wanted to be confident and at his best when he saw everyone he knew. He wanted everything to be in order, completely under control before he threw himself back into everyone's lives. He also knew that those people would come with their opinions of other people, and he wanted to be open to getting to know people himself. "How have you been? Things good at home?" he asked, hoping that was a nice change of topic.
"I'm sure Taron misses you. I go over his and Sophie's house a lot." Chanel had been spending even more time over their house since things at home were getting worse. She was really grateful for the Hayworth's but she felt like such an annoyance, she was going over so frequently. "Home? It's fine. I've been okay- good. I've been good." she corrected herself. Chanel had been super stressed lately. Things at home were worse than they've ever been, but she didn't want Wren to know that. She just wanted a nice dinner with him. "So does your family still call you Laurie? Or is that completely off the table now? I liked it." she tried changing the subject, hoping that talking about himself would distract him enough.(edited)January 1, 2021
It was good to hear that everyone else was still close, he worried that people would have massive drama that he would have to navigate when he got back. He didn't want to pick sides on years long beef when he didn't really even know anyone that well anymore. "Nana does, even Rory calls me Wren now" said the boy with a smile, he wouldn't super mind it if Chanel called him Laurie, as long as it didn't catch on at school. He liked Wren better, but hearing her say Laurie brought a childhood familiarity to him that he hadn't felt in years.
Chanel loved his old nickname. As kids she never used his full name, it just seemed too weird saying it out loud. "That's nice." she said. It sounded like she wasn't paying attention to what he was saying, but she was too busy thinking about Nana coming back. She didn't want to leave, but she couldn't stay. It was best to save the embarrassment and get out while the woman was gone. Having dinner alone with Chanel must have been uncomfortable for Wren anyways. "I'm really sorry but I... I need to go. I'm not feeling well." she was already getting up from her seat as she spoke.
Wren was surprised when she said she had to go, she had seemed fine. "Yeah, um let me walk you out" he said as he got up from his seat. He had wanted to catch up more, to go roller skating or watch a movie. Just spending time with her already made him happy to be back in White Lake. There was something about Chanel Hampton that was comforting for him. "It was really nice seeing you again, Chanel" said Wren with a soft smile across his lips. He couldn't help but think about how beautiful she was, and he was hoping that they could get back to being friends like when they were children.
Chanel crossed her arms over her body as she walked towards the door, she didn't want to come off rude with her sudden exit but she panicked. Even after all these years, she still cared so much about Wren's opinion on her. Even if this news about her family didn't change his mind, he'd eventually find out how much she's changed. It was best to avoid him altogether. It's not like they were really friends anymore. "Yeah it was. I guess I'll see you around. Bye, Wren." she responded back with a weak smile before heading out the door and to her house.

The trash dumpster vessel Harringrove and “Holy shit”
Into the dumpster we go! Wow, season 3 was so good and literally just about kids growing up and finding themselves and nothing bad happened whatsoever.
 (AO3)
“Holy shit, Harrington.”
Steve whirls around so fast behind the counter that his hat nearly falls off. He wishes it had slipped down enough to cover his face so he didn’t have to meet Billy Hargrove’s eyes and smug grin. He shot a look towards Max, the one that said you know I said any of your asses were grass if he found out about this job, right?
She gave him a helpless sorry, nothing I could do look back at him.
Steve rolled his eyes at them both. “You can’t swear in here, there’s kids.”
Billy gestured around the store. “Not a damn kid in sight except Max.”
“She counts,” Steve said flatly. Robin was looking up from her magazine in the back to watch the events unfold before her. “So, what’ll you h-”
“Isn’t there something you’re supposed to say, pretty boy?”
Steve sighed through gritted teeth, then pasted on a big fake grin. “Ahoy.”
Billy mockingly saluted him, and Steve felt like dying as he said back, “Ahoy, sailor.”
Max shoved Billy’s arm. “Shut up. Steve, I want mint chocolate chip with Reese’s cups.”
Billy scoffed at that, earning another shove from her. Steve chose to let the siblings hash it out, scooping out Max’s ice cream and adding the toppings, passing it over to her. She accepted it with a smile from him, nudging Billy as she walked out to scan the magazine kiosk just outside the store. Billy looked Steve over, and Steve couldn’t read what that expression meant. He just knew that he didn’t want to deal with Billy right now. “What do you want?”
“Winning lotto numbers and a new fan belt for my car.”
“You can have rainbow sherbert,” Steve offered, and Billy cracked a grin at him, licking over his bottom lip the way he always seemed to do.
He smoothed his hair back from his face, and Steve’s eyes drifted to the whistle still hanging around his neck, the crop top and the swim trunks he was still wearing. “Are you really wearing a swimsuit to the mall?”
“Didn’t have time to change after the shift, pretty boy. Can’t all wear sailor suits.”
Steve closed his eyes, taking a deep breath. Robin craned her head to watch this unfold. “Can you just tell me what you want so you can get out?”
Billy shrugged, pointing behind the glass at the ice cream closest to him. “Pistachio, two scoops. With hazelnuts, and a cherry.”
Steve smiled even faker, scooping out the ice cream and turning to the toppings bar. Robin watched him make it, and Billy noticed her as he was watching Steve from behind. “What do you think, babe?” he asked her with a smirk. “Good order?”
Robin licked her finger and turned the page, looking up at him with a faint glint in her eye, as her voice dripped in sarcasm and double entendre, “I don’t have an affinity for nuts, Hargrove.”
He narrowed his eyes at her, she smiled back with nothing behind it right as Steve turned back around with his cup, and handed it to Billy across the counter. “Two fifty.”
Billy raised an eyebrow. “I know that hairspray’s rotting your brain, pretty boy, but it’s more than that for two ice creams.”
“One’s on the house.” Billy’s expression changed into that weird one again, and Steve didn’t think about it, looking past him to point towards Max. “Hers. Pay up.”
Billy took the cherry from his cup and put the whole thing, stem and all, into his mouth as he got his wallet out of his pocket. Steve drummed his fingers on the counter. “I don’t have all day.”“Paying customer, Captain Crunch, watch the attitude,” Billy snarked back, pulling out a five and ignoring Steve’s outstretched hand to slap it on the counter. “Haven’t seen you around the pool lately.”
Steve sighed, picking up the five and opened the register to pull make change. “I have a pool, I don’t need to go to the public one.”
“Oh, sorry, King Steve, didn’t realize you’re too good to slum it with the plebeians down at the public pool.”
“I didn’t say that, asshole.”
“Ooh, watch it, there’s children here,” Billy mock gasped. Steve ignored it, but when he looked back up, Billy had the cherry stem tied in a knot on his tongue as he smirked, before he spat that onto the counter that Steve had just wiped down. He held out his hand for the change, but Steve kept it in his fist.
“I’m taking Dustin and Suzie there on Friday,” Steve told him. Why was he telling him this? “I better not see your smug ass there.”
Somehow Billy looked less smug, instead almost - surprised?  “Friday’s are my double shift, sucks for you.”
“Guess I’ll have to see you,” Steve smiled through his teeth, and Billy smiled back. Steve almost put the change in his outstretched hand, close enough they could feel the heat off each other, before he dropped two dollars and fifty cents (all in loose change) onto the counter. “Hasselhoff.”
Billy’s face broke into a grin, one that didn't feel as - mean, as his usual smiles, as he swept the change into his wallet. He took a few quarters and dropped them into the tip jar. He flashed a wink at him as he stuck his spoon of pistachio against his tongue. “Always like to tip the pretty ones after a show. See you around, Gilligan.”
Steve was glaring daggers into Billy as he walked out of the store, hoping he could feel it. He was so busy glaring that Robin had to raise her voice so he heard her.
“Earth to Steve, are you done staring at his ass and can clean the counter now?”
Steve’s eyes widened. “I - I was not staring at his ass, Robin! I was - thinking of how I can kill him.”
“While staring at his ass. You both do that, you know.”
“I - HE doesn't, I don't, you’re crazy.”
“I’m not the one who insulted the other guy into a date on Friday.”
Steve started sputtering, telling her that she was wrong, that she was crazy, there was nothing between him and Billy Hargrove but hatred, when he turned around and she was holding the damn whiteboard. So many tallies under YOU SUCK, but she was making direct eye contact as she dragged the squeaky marker under YOU RULE. One single, lone tally in that column.
It suddenly felt like waking up in the back of Billy’s car (fuck) and slamming into a mailbox.
“Holy SHIT.”
“LANGUAGE, young man!” called a disgusted mother who entered the shop with her two children, and Steve went as red as his stupid little tie on the uniform.
Fridays were Steve’s day off. He would have liked to have spent it at his own house, drinking from his parent’s supply, smoking weed, and watching TV in between doing laps. They were gone this weekend, like most weekends. It would have been perfect.
Instead, he was at a loud, crowded public pool watching two kids because he was their ride to and from this place. And Dustin, the shitbird, had just dumped his water bottle all over Steve’s hair.
“Holy shit!” he squealed when the ice-cold water ran down his back, and he sprang out of the chair and shoved Dustin.
PFTWEEEEEEET
Steve turned around sharply to see Billy fucking Hargrove with the whistle in his mouth, right behind him on his way to the lifeguard chair. Which, of fucking course, was right next to where Dustin had dumped their stuff on a few chairs. Great.
Billy was holding up two fingers as the whistle fell back against his chest. “No swearing and no horseplay in my pool, Harrington.”
Steve was sputtering because Billy Hargrove enforcing a no swearing rule was absolutely ridiculous, and then maybe he was sputtering at his abs.
What? Wait-
Billy brushed past him, his shoulder bumping against Steve’s own as he walked towards the chair, climbing up the ladder and taking a seat. Steve squinted up at him, hiding his eyes from the sun, “You’re a tyrant with a whistle, Hasselhoff.”
Billy smirked, before turning back to staring at the pool and the people swimming in it. Steve flopped back into his lounge chair, applying more sunscreen to his torso before picking back up his magazine with the Baywatch cast on the cover. He kept looking up from the pages to see if Billy was looking his way. Not because he wanted him to look, but - he was just curious, was all.
But he wasn’t looking his way.
So Steve got up from his lounge chair, stretching out, and walking towards the diving board. He bounced on the soles of his feet as he waited in line, before walking up the ladder. He looked up, and saw Billy watching him. He took a deep breath, and ran across the diving board, jumping high on the end of the board and doing two perfect flips before hitting the water in a dive, with all the grace of years and years being on a swim team.
Billy’s whistle dropped from his lips, falling against his chest again. “Holy shit,” he breathed out, soft enough nobody could hear him.
He watched Steve get out of the pool after splashing around with his weird kid friend, walking back to his spot. Billy got out of the lifeguard chair to go on his break, and he passed Steve, intending to throw an elbow at him. Steve caught his arm, though, and they got stuck in eye contact.
“You need something, pretty boy?” Billy managed to get out in the best snarky voice he could muster up. Steve didn’t move his hand, and for some reason Billy didn’t shove it off.
“Parents are out this weekend,” Steve told him. “Got some green and top shelf whiskey my dad won’t miss. And a quiet pool. If you’re interested.”
Billy stared at him, and this time, Steve could read that weird expression, even through the sunglasses. But it still helped when Billy slid them down his nose to meet his eyes, and he was smiling, not smug, but - real.
Steve realized that was the look he’d given him in Scoops, at the store Joyce worked, at the gas station.
“Shift’s over at five-thirty,” Billy told him as an answer. Steve nodded, thinking of something to say as Billy started to turn around. His eyes landed on the magazine. “Actually, with the way your flaunt your chest around, you’re more of a Pam Anderson.”
Billy snorted out a loud laugh, one that wasn’t angry or smug, sputtering out a, “holy SHIT, Harrington.”
“Language, please!” called a nearby mother, shooting them both a dirty look. Billy flashed a smile and wink at her to get her flustered before turning back to Steve.
He mouthed language at him.
Steve mouthed motherfucker back at him, and Billy shook his head, chuckling as he walked back to the snack bar.
Later that night, through the haze of too much weed and one too many shots of expensive whiskey, Steve’s nose was full of sunscreen and chlorine while Billy’s was full of vanilla and strawberry.
They didn’t realize how close they were until they were breaking apart from a kiss, staring at each other. Then they both burst into laughter, Steve’s arm around Billy’s shoulders as Billy’s hand rested on Steve’s thigh.
“Holy shit.”

hmmm, what about a lifeguard au for a ship of ur choice?
Sharon had had the summer job at the pool for about two years now. It was a nice job, barring all the drama the younger hires caused within the group. But it was a steady rhythm, only interrupted by unpredictable children and spilled chemicals, at times. (Blaming you, Tones.)
But no one told her that there was a new hire, and it was Sam Wilson.
She remembered Sam. He had been her high school crush, which she thought had been taken care of by college and the stress of classes and other aspects of life.
But there he is. In the white t-shirt that hugs his body a little too well, a smile that screams easy confidence, and a face that makes Sharon want to melt on the floor in a puddle.
Sharon doesn’t do that, because despite everything, she’s professional.
“Nice to see you,” she says with a grin. “Glad to see that you’re alive and thriving.”
“Right back at you,” Sam says. “Got a recommendation from a friend named Steve. He said that the top lifeguard is pretty good at her job.”
“The best,” Sharon corrects, smiling. “Follow me.”
Steve most definitely did not tell Sam that Sharon worked at the pool. He never once mentioned it, although he should’ve known something was up from the way Steve grinned and recommended the top lifeguard.
Because it’s Sharon-damn-Carter, one of the few girls that can manage to leave him speechless. She has a sharp tongue, a sweet smile, and doesn’t look all too bad in a swimsuit.
So begins their summer. They both love working the early shift, seeing all of the regular old people taking their time swimming laps, the new children learning how to swim. They talk to each other about what’s going on in their life now, about the new stories that have cropped up.
And the crush is back in full force. Because of course it is, why wouldn’t it be? It’s not like they haven’t gotten lunch together and debated the benefits of sour cream and the quantity of it. It’s not like Sam hasn’t invited her over to a house party with the other friends she hasn’t seen in years, and some that she has.
(Bruce surprises her the most, but not near as much as the knowledge that he and Thor are seriously dating.)
Sam’s seen Sharon, the girl who likes really bad humor and intentionally buys ugly-patterned luggage so she knows that it’s hers when she goes to the airport. Sharon, who buys really bad tourist gifts and likes to tell him random facts about whatever interest she has.
Then Fourth of July hits. It’s a packed holiday for the pools, and with a parade going on nearby?
Both Sam and Sharon are called into the frontlines, dealing with dropped popsicles, too many people in the pools, and enough stories to last a lifetime.
“I just want a drink,” Sharon grumbles. spreading her arms out on the front desk. “A drink and a long nap.”
“Me too,” Sam says. “Maybe a hammock.”
“Oh my god, that sounds killer.”
It’s the start to a nice rest of the summer, and if it continues even after they quit the pool.
