If I weren't so familiar with "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner," I think I would be able to appreciate "The Albatross" off the new album a whole lot more. Like, "peace" is a top three song for me off folklore and I just love the conversation those two songs are having, the storytelling choice to use third person, some of the instrumentation. But she does the least interesting possible thing with the allusion.

It's super clear that Taylor hasn't actually read the Rime and is just going off the general cultural idea of what the albatross is supposed to represent. Given that the allusion is basically the entire premise of the song, this is really disappointing. Especially on an album called "The Tortured Poets Department."

d. whatever mogh's deal was, whatever the fire cult's deal was, whatever farum azula's deal was, whatever the ancestral followers' deal was, any other recurring group of enemies that doesn't have an associated speaking role

e. any quest that revolves around handing in collectibles to a stationary dude

f. seluvis, who is that while also being one of the worst person you're still technically able to help

#elden ring #it's honestly a crime that volcano manor doesn't have an ending because it's probably the most fleshed out npc group besides ranni's gang #I might be underrating fia's quest because it just wasn't really present at all in my first playthrough #I talked to fia and she gave me the blessing and then I was like this sucks and then didn't talk to her again #patches would be s tier if the castanets actually did something. as-is it's just a good shaggy dog story #the scarlet rot subplot would be s tier if millicent could be summoned for a relevant fight #and maybe if one of her sisters invaded in the lake of rot somewhere #I also wish the haligtree/elphael was a little bit less dense with enemies #the dung eater is just an asshole with zero nuance or flair but I guess that's kind of the point #why on earth does he have his own ending??? the flame of frenzy is already the fuck everything chaos 10000 years option #the eternal cities is coasting on siofra being far and away the prettiest area in the game and containing the mimic boss/summon #they are not very developed or deep #if any faction in elden ring were to get extensively fleshed out in a dlc campaign I would want it to be the albinaurics #they're a really interesting setup for not much payoff #and hinge way too much on an easily missable quest

ok i actually have something to say here as an endgame conclusive thought. so in the first game the symbolism with neku’s headphones was pretty obvious- they represented how he shut everyone else out and never wanted to listen to them. he put them on at the very beginning and wore them the entire game until he took them off at the very end. showing that his character development was complete.

with rindo… it’s a little more subtle. i mean the way they handled his character development in general, but also specifically the physical representation of his anxiety. it’s the mask, right? totally. i mean it’s confirmed by the creators that that’s the reason it was incorporated into his design. rindo never speaks up for himself and hides who he is. but then many people feel that the symbolism falls flat since he only actually wears it properly over his mouth and nose one time, at the very beginning of the game. (i guess devs didn’t want to go the whole game without showing half the protags’ face, but i think it would have been perfectly fine. and actually super cool too. ah well.)

however! it’s at this moment that the other piece of symbolism becomes apparent: his phone. the guy isn’t always wearing his mask but he IS always holding his phone. in almost all of his sprites. in his 3D character model. from the very beginning of the game. and better yet, a lot of his sprites have him looking so closely at his phone that he’s holding it directly in front of his face. he’s hiding behind it. like it’s a mask.

he never expresses himself out loud in person. he buries himself in his apps and games and only talks to his online friend. he’s got a social media addiction and seeks validation on the internet (feel called out yet?). but now he’s real friends with other people in real life. and better yet, his online friend is right here in person. and now he knows the real her too. (not to say that swallow was a fake persona, but it was only one part of her. online friendships are real and valid but there’s only so much you can claim to know about someone based on your interactions behind a screen. they’re still effectively a stranger.) anyway, rindo doesn’t need to be glued to his phone anymore now that he has a healthier support system in his life.

and much like the last shots of twewy have neku taking off his headphones, here in the last few moments of ntwewy, rindo puts away his phone, ready to get out into the world again. good for him.

I never did mention, but I finally beat Vesperia! It was okay--a more than solid rpg, but not one of my personal faves from the series. The plot was pretty standard for a Tales game--maybe slightly more deus ex machina-y in the final act, though I may just be forgetting the most egregious things from some of the other titles. Rita stands out as my single favorite character (to no one's surprise) and honestly probably one of my faves overall for the series. Judith was also pretty fun, and I liked Raven's story arc even if it felt a little clumsy or confusing at times. And obviously the Yuri-Flynn dynamic/relationship/tension pretty much carries the entire game.

Speaking of which, I've already devoured a week's worth of Fluri fanfiction (impeccable ship portmanteau, btw) and have a whole stack of longfics still waiting in my Marked for Laters. They're so stupid and noble and good for each other, I love them a lot. I'll have to rec some of these later if I think about it.

(I also found out yesterday that there's a heckign FEATURE-LENGTH MOVIE about the two of them as knights-in-training, which!!!!!!!! guess what I'm watching tonight)

Anyway. Glad I finally played it! Not sure it quite lived up to my expectations, but then again I think Arise simply raised my standards to an absurd level lol, so it's not entirely Vesperia's fault. It also would've helped if I'd been any good at using Yuri in combat, but alas,

#Tyto plays ToV #I wanted to REALLY love Yuri as a protagonist and like. I DO like him. he's a good and interesting character #but I never felt like they QUITE scratched some of the itches I was hoping they were going to?? #I don't even know how to explain it really #it's just. idk. they established him as this antihero vigilante archetype. and then had Flynn as his foil. #and then had the Empire vs Guilds conflict going on sort of in parallel to that #but not REALLY bc both Yuri and Flynn are too idealistic to let any blind nationalism get in the way of what they think is right/just #and............. idk like they DO explore a lot of nuance within that dynamic but I was left wanting MORE still #and maybe the ultimate threat being mostly unrelated to the war was part of the problem? #like. they were just cramming too many ideas on top of each other for this one. #the villain is War but also.... Climate Change? a little bit? lmao that's oversimplifying obviously but #if you've played it you know what I mean #the answer to Both problems is humanity overcoming differences and choosing to work together even when it's inconvenient #which is an AWESOME central theme for a story and I really dig it. but like I said it felt kinda disjointed at some parts #(disclaimer I'm sure if I'd written out my thoughts like this for the other Tales games I'd have just as many things to nitpick ahfdjshf) #(it was still really good!!!
