wxs physical build headcanons for me to draw later!!

before and way later on after joining wxs edition

cw: mention of a lot of different eating habits and small mentions of body image issues

TSUKASA!!

before: a bit underweight, i imagine he got a bit too into eating "healthy" at times and would refuse a lot of foods he deemed unhealthy, which caused him to not get certain nutrients at times even tho he needed them, add to that his forgetfulness especially when it comes to taking care of himself and you can see why hes skinny like that. i also imagine he would often burn more calories than he consumed in a day with all his practicing and just running around in general, which is definetly not that good when youre already underweight. he would often wonder why he seemingly just cant gain any muscle and assumed its just kinda how he naturally is, tho he didnt mind much since his build was similar to a lot of his idols

after: he gained some healthy weight!!!! yippieee!!! with wxs constantly reminding him to take care of himself + with emu bringing some food/snacks nearly everyday he gained some healthy weight, hes now pretty average with maybe a bit of chub in some places. he also finally started building some muscle thanks to all the practice and ruis "training"? if you can call it that? he does get a bit insecure about it at times, wishing he would be back to his build that was like his idols, but wxs are quick to remind him that the best star is a happy and healthy one!! his natural state definitely wasnt skinny, at least not as skinny as he was before

NENE!!!!!

before: you already know she was malnourished and looked like she barely saw the light of day... she had a very weak appetite and her horrible sleep schedule didnt help. she tried to eat well but she struggled with it a lot, tho she never exactly knew why, she would just very quickly feel full and wouldnt feel hungry untill way too many hours later. she would eat like. 2 small meals a day and maybe some snacks in between.

after: you guessed it she gained weight and is chubbier!!!!!! yayayyaa!!!! i think she would hear others motivate tsukasa to eat better and seeing him want to improve on that motivated her to do the same. because of the low appetite thing she struggled pretty hard at first but with time she managed to figure it out and now eats more and is feeling good!!! this is thanks to mostly emu who would love to bring foods and snacks nene loved so they can share it any time the 2 would hang out, but also thanks to the practices and stamina building she was able to kinda feel like she was burning the unnecessary calories? i imagine she struggled pretty hard when she realized how much weight she put on thinking its a bad thing, but with a lot of support and care from wxs she realized this is way healthier for her than wherever she had going on before!!! she doesnt gain muscle easily tho, so not much of that going on + she does focus more on stamina itself rather than gaining muscle and physical strength

EMU!!!!!

before: chubby, obviously. fat even!!!! definetly overweight and not bothered by it at all! she definetly thinks it makes her look cuter :3 my girl loves foods and snacks and nobody can ruin her mood for those. she also had a fair bit of muscle and liked that its not visible so shes strong but nobody can tell, and she can suprise them with it for funsies

after: still pretty much the same!! tho since she started training and working out even more i imagine a bit of her weight turned into more muscle, so shes even more muscle now!!!! she loves it!!! its still not visible unless she flexes, which makes the muscles pretty prominent and she LOVES jumpscaring people with that because nobody expects it for some reason, despite how athletic she is. besides her arms i imagine her legs are pretty built as well seeing how much she runs, especially from one school to another in a matter of minutes to visit her friend. what can i say my girl loves to eat and run around!!! her love language is soooo sharing a meal with her friends btw. its canon i just know it.

RUIIII!!!!!

before: barely eats doesnt sleep much, just a mess honestly. he doesnt rlly have friends atp and yet still he takes care of others more than he does himself..... needless to say hes tall, lanky, underweight as hell and palest of them all despite not staying inside all that much. lives off of whatever his parents make him if he remembers to eat it and random store bought/school cafeteria foods. malnutrition for sure too like fym u eat no vegetables and ur fine??? bro doesnt even take any vitamins atp to make up for it

after: gained a bit of weight!! hes still skinny because thats just kinda how he naturally is, but hes getting tricked into eating veggies or at least stuff that can replace veggies with the needed nutritions otherwise. he also started taking some vitamins to make up for that too, and despite being naturally pale he did tan a bit!! he still forgets to eat way too often but wxs make up for it with tsukasa always being willing to share his food with him [at times even bringing bigger portions just in case rui needs it] and emu often bringing food to share with them all!!!!

can u tell im a little bit obsessed with gaining weight as a sign of healing. because i am and i love that trope. with the power of love you will stop being underweight and malnourished god bless.

i am actually so suspicious of this god damn moth post but i cant find any concrete evidence to prove theres something wrong with it other than my gut feeling and i feel insane

like of course first of all this post is from 2013 and im not really willing to believe any given post from 2013 is true specially when the post is this amazing coincidence of this person coincidentally finding those two coincidentally aesthetically pleasing moths and managing to get them coincidentally snuggling together for a picture. yknow. it does feel too weirdly good to be true

BUT SECONDLY im so weirded out by these two moths specifically.

ok bear with me. the little one is very obviously a rosy maple moth. (which is also coincidentally one of the most famous moths specifically for being pretty)

but im willing to believe any given english speaking tumblrgirl at the time could find one considering they live seemingly accross the united states and canada. fair enough

BUT my problem is the big one. of course everybody even in the notes seems to be classifying it as a luna moth (ALSO a famous moth species for being pretty) you can also feasibly find them in north america, ok.

theres also the point of their lifespans

luna moths as adults live only for about 7-10 days, and i had a harder time finding info for adult rosy maple moths but it seems its about the same

the source of this is an old article from someone actively breeding maple moths x but i believe its the same with moths in general, since they literally dont have mouths and cant eat so they just mate and die.

SO youre gonna have a small time span to find one. both moths are also mainly nocturnal, which makes even weirder that op found both of them during the day.

theres also the point of WHEN are they adults. aka maply moths seem to show from from may through the summer

luna moths though, seem to vary in when they show up depending on place. some do include late may or early june on northern regions, ans a generation in july in central states.

which means you could, feasibly, have a span of about a week or so in may, june or july where both maple moths and luna moths are adults and alive at the same time.

BUT THE POST IN QUESTION IS FROM APRIL 16

thats NOT when adult rosy maple moths show up, much less both of them.

though maybe im just being too pedandic with specific dates and theres margin for variation, but its, again, some real big coincidences

BUT FINALLY theres the fact im suspicious about this luna moth IN THE FIRST PLACE.

i might just be going actually crazy here, but for this we've been assuming the luna moth is the species that exists in north america (otherwise these two wouldnt be in the same place at all)

and like this is what the luna moth looks like

and you see how theyre kinda weird compared to the one in the pic.

the luna moths are mostly green, with much less of this pretty pastel pink of the one on the tumblr post. you could argue they have pink markings but in most pictures i see they seem more like a dark red/brown with a remarkable very thick marking on the wings

you see how the moth in the pic just looks kinda weird. but that can also be from filters or editing to make the photo prettier making the colors different.

(i also think the tail looks weirdly long, but there seems to be variation in the tail length in various luna moth pics ive seen, so i cant speak for sure about that)

(i also cant tell you whether the sizes in comparison to each other are right cause i suck at visualizing size comparisons and its not like theres any other pic on earth of the two together so.)

CONCLUSION: i dont fucking know. i spent an hour looking moths up online and didnt get any reasonable answer to my doubts. i guess in the end THERE is, even if small, a chance of you finding both these boths alive at the same time in the same place so i can fully discredit the op. i give up im going to have breakfast

Official announcement post I guess

It’s currently 01.30 AM where I live, but the Wanderrose one-shot I am writing is finished. Somewhat- my beta reader still needs to finish and I’m sure imma end up rephrasing some stuff tomorrow morning, but I do know its ready to be posted tomorrow, so I just wanna rant about it a little. Read it if you’d like to!

It’s going to be called: Maybe Loving You is Dangerous

Which I’ll admit is a pretty basic title, but it was suggestion from a friend and it won the vote so- we’re rolling with it. It also just so happens to be a song lyric of the song I was looping while thinking of this idea (Slow it Down by Benson Boone. I’ll link it to this post but its a pretty popular song so I bet you’ve heard of it)

This is going to be the summary:

It’s a big day in the danceverses, the prince is finally turning 21. This means the prince is finally eligible to fully inherit the throne, but most importantly: it’s time for him to look for proper suitors. This is a cause for celebration in the Nova family. A big celebration at that. They invite the social elite of all the different danceverses, but the most important guests are the heirs. To offer Wanderlust a good view of the suitable young ladies he can court, but Wanderlust seems to be completely enamoured by an unexpected guest.

The word count is currently at 9956

This is ofcourse subject to change as my beta reader and I edit stuff.

An update and RUMBLE WEEKEND!!

Hey everyone!

Its been a long time since I've posted to this blog but that's because I've been buisy getting life stuff sorted! My post-grad work is chugging along, I got a new job in my field and I'm learning to drive about 10 years late! But I've been playing a ton of pokemon in the mean time! I've got some full odds hunts in generations 3 and 4 on the go to get some fun playthroughs in before bank shuts down (Maybe in April?).

My luck with full odds hunting has been atrocious until the day of writing this post though. I've put the gen 3 hunt on hold because I was overcome with an urge to play Platinum again and do some pokeradar chaining so I expanded out to 3 consoles and took up soft resetting for Wimpod on the side in Sun.

Unfortunately I passed odds on Wimpod and a soft reset caused my 2DS to freak out and delete the entire game install, fortunately I was juuust in the time window to redownload it from the eShop so I'll pick it back up again some day! Until then though, the hunt for Chimchar continues.

I've also been slowly building up a collection of retro junk that's fun to tinker with! Meet my new CRT and VHS setup! (I'll get a tv unit for it the second I find an era appropriate one!)

While we're on the topic of retro tech, let me tell you about my favorite latest project! My roomie had a spare wii that he didn't want so I took it, soft-modded it and dressed it up in a pretty see through shell!

I've been using this puppy to catch up on all of the gamecube and wii games I've missed, mostly Colosseum, Gale of Darkness and Resident Evil stuff! However there is one other thing I've been loving~ Pokemon Rumble and its fan mod, Weekend Edition! The mod adds in gen 2 and 3 pokemon that were missing from the base game and there's even a roughly quarterly shiny hunting event called Rumble Weekend where you only hunt in Rumble! The odds are roughly the same as the gen 3 and 4 games (1/8192) but the encounters fly by so fast that shinies feel relatively common.

I participated for the first time this weekend and after only an hour or so of playing I had my first two Rumble Weekend shinies!!

Okay so I've finally gotten around to watching Devilman Crybaby, and I don't hate it, I actually like it a lot more than I thought I would despite its flaws and oh boy are there some flawwsss (holy shit they did Sirene so fucking dirty in this series!!! Worse part of crybaby for real) and I can't say I was 100% fond of how they depict Ryo (before going into this series I did headcanon that they were portraying Ryo/Satan as someone who had lived in such a warlike mindset for so long he couldn't get out of it even when he thought he was human, and thus couldn't live in peace, Akira was the only thing that gave him peace but he couldn't admit it, if he admits love exists and thus sorrow exists and that'll slow him down from doing what needs to be done. Maybe I'm just coping but whatever it works for me, and if that was what the creators were going for then they needed to make it more clear and have more eps cause the break neck speed this series had really hurt it! But I have to say the last four eps were really good and ep 9 and 10 really brought me to tears like damn the series had good bones it just needed more time!😭Also I needed more Zennon pleasseeeee!

Crybaby really made Miki an almost saintly character and while I do like that she ultimately helped Akira by inspiring every devilman to come out and fight for humanity, I do miss her feisty side and her being just a normal teenage girl being unfairly murdered all because Akira had lived with her family and how society tends to punish women especially teenage girls who are barely involved more harshly than the people directly involved. But whatever those are different takes and honestly both are good but ya know personal preferences and hey since I like to play with time loops in my AUs its one of those possible things (tho I will say that my crybaby verse is much more edited and Sirene has pretty much the same motives and arc as she did in the manga and ova cause woww nope not having what happened crybaby)

But more nice things I will say about the series, I really love the music, it is amazing and also I love the intro so much, I've been listening to it a lot and I try to watch it when I watched the next ep! I love the ink blotty look to it and the symbolism!And that's what lead me to make this picture, cause yes my ot3 exist even in my crybaby verse, but oh boy is it messy!XD Since Miki is pretty saintly in crybaby, I wouldn't be surprised that Akira and Ryo would come to see her as a saint after her death, Akira mourning her loss and Ryo regretting letting her die. So I did some grayscale shading with the watercolor brush in procreate and it was fun to mess around outside my usual style and yes I gave Ryo his sideburns, he needed them back! XD it was fun to play around with my style and maybe I'll do something like this again sometime, maybe not crybaby related tho.

Cozy Nights With Eddie

pairing: eddie munson x reader

summary: in which you choose KFC over eddie

word count: 800!

warnings: food and eating, reader is wearing eddie’s shirt and trust me i know he is a skinny little lad and not everyone could fit into his clothes (i know i probably couldn’t) but i just want to experience it for once so i wrote it that way anyway, poorly edited probably, fluff!!

“Honey, I’m home! And I bring food!” Eddie says, flopping onto the foot of his bed, looking to see you pretty much exactly where he had left you when he went on the much needed food run.

He liked coming back to his trailer to see you waiting for him, it made his heart all warm and fuzzy.

“Hmm, thank you, Eds,” you hum without looking up from your book. “I’m just gonna finish this chapter, is that okay?”

“Of course it is, sweetheart. Watcha reading? It seems to really have your attention,” he smiles warmly.

“Little Women, I never read it when we were supposed to for school and now I’m wishing I had. It’s really good,” you said, looking up to see him already staring at you with a soft smile and kind brown eyes.

“I like when you get all nerdy. Especially when wearing my shirt.” Eddie’s eyebrows waggle at the statement.

Forgetting what you had decided to put on after the shower you took while he was gone, you look down to find one of his most worn Metallica t-shirts. The band’s name is written across the top in a faded red color, a picture of a skull holding flowers between its teeth surrounded by flames sits under the lettering.

“Oh! I didn’t even realize, sorry Eds, I know how much you love this shirt. I can change if you want me to?”

“Nonsense, sweetheart, you look great in it. Maybe not quite as good as me,” he jokes, “But you’re so cute in it I couldn’t possibly bear to see you not wearing my stuff. In fact, I think you should never take it off.”

He smushes your cheeks between his large hands, rubbing your noses together like a little chipmunk. It causes you to giggle at the ticklish feeling it brings on.

You push his chest away lightly but he only pulls you harder against himself, smacking loud kisses all over your face.

“Eddie!” you shriek, falling away from him onto the bed. He now lies on top of you.

“What? I can’t help myself, you’re just my favorite person ever in the whole wide world,” he practically whines, still planting kisses on your cheeks and forehead.

“Hm, well you’re gonna have to learn to control it for at least a few minutes because I’m hungry and whatever you brought smells too good to let it go cold.”

He scoffs, “Oh, wow. You’re choosing KFC over your gorgeous and loving and funny and wonderfully attractive and incredibly in touch with his emotions and super smoking bod boyfriend?”

You grab his face, staring deep into his eyes, waiting a few seconds for effect before-

“Yes.” You push him off of you quickly with all your force causing him to fall off of the bed.

Laughing loudly you crawl to the side of the bed to check on him.

“You okay, love bug?” you ask, giggles escaping your lips despite your best efforts.

“Just go eat your food, you gremlin. Clearly that’s all you want,” he pouts, sitting cross legged with his arms folded in front of his chest like a toddler in time out.

“Oh no, did I make the big bad Eddie Munson upset? I’m so sowwy, my wittle baby,” you exaggerate, replacing R’s and L’s for W’s in baby talk, pouting your lips out in hopes to seem even more ridiculous.

Eddie huffs and turns his back to you, keeping up the act, even though you saw his lips give the slightest twitch.

Crawling off the bed you turn his head back to yours, squishing and pinching his cheeks like a grandma would.

“Come on, Eds. You know I love you more than KFC, and if the fact that I’m trying to get you to stop pouting instead of eating it when I know even you can hear my stomach growling doesn’t prove it, I don’t know what will.”

He finally meets your eyes and smiles. It’s a full on signature Eddie Munson smile, dimples showing proudly along with his pearly whites.

“You’re lucky you’re so damn cute,” he gives you a quick peck on the lips. “Now, would you quit playing around, I need some food in me.”

He jumps to his feet and helps to pull you up with him, ignoring your sarcastic grumbles of ‘oh, yeah, I’m the one who’s causing the hold up.’

After a good meal of fried chicken and mashed potatoes, you’re back where you started. Huddled under a fuzzy blanket covered in pumpkins and leaves, reading LIttle Women. Only this time Eddie has his head rested in your lap, eyes drifting shut while you run your fingers through his hair.

“I love you,” Eddie says, startling you out of your focus.

“And I love you, Eddie Munson,” you lean down and kiss his forehead, stroking his hair back from his face.

Your lips travel down to his, sharing soft and sweet kisses.

“Read to me?” he asks softly.

“Always.”

i feel like this is as good of a time as any to talk rn

but i think im kinda creatively burned out. especially when it comes to gifs and edits tbh

it might have something to do with the lashing out i did yesterday morning and how everything made me feel, but.. idk. making gifs very much just feels like a chore of me running on autopilot with how i create them so its just not kind of fun anymore. im still doing them more for myself than anything else, but at the same time it just.. just feels time consuming and like the time and effort i do put in doesnt translate back to me in a way i want. yes even if im pretty much only making kip content (with occasional chrissy b's thrown in), it still feels like that

i guess part of it is that i just did so much in rapid succession following the past week of content while ive been sick and my brain has decided to focus on the numbers about that which have for the most part not been great so.. this plus the stuff mentioned above. idk i just dont feel like its fun. like the stuff i posted today i dont feel like i had fun making it. i finished the set more out of obligation than actually wanting to provide gif content of kip

editing-wise idk again i like doing it but whats the point really lmao. im not good at it and its not the popular kind of content on my blog so idek why i do them. again, dont feel super fun rn

i dont know where this is going. maybe i need a break. i just dont feel very positively about making anything rn (and im praying it doesnt bleed onto writing cause i cant afford to feel that way too when i can finally get back to that when this sickness is fully over) but.. idk. heads up i guess if i stop posting stuff. just not feeling very great about shit is all

It was a standard morning at the avengers compound and peter parker was in his assigned room,scrolling away on tumblr.

When suddenly,a bright pink,purple and blue portal opened up in his doorway.

Peter merely looked up and went back to scrolling and out of the portal came a (y/h/c) haired girl.

She stepped into peter’s room and closed the portal behind her.afterward she walked on over to peter’s bed,plopped down next to him and leaned on his shoulder.

“sup webs!” she said while watching him scroll.

“um nothing much y/n/n.just goun through the ‘ol hellsite,”he put his phone down and turned towards her, “what about you?how’s everything over on Earth-1218?”

“um still pretty non-super.basic as ever.”she said while yawning.

“so what brings you over?”peter asked.

“was bored,thought id visit my favourite web slinger!”she said over-enthusiasticaly.

At this peter got up off the bed and took her with him.

“well then lets go meet the guys!”the familiar spark in his eyes had returned and Y/n knew his social battery was finally at 100%

They walked out of his room and over to the common room where everyone was seated doing their regular stuff.

As soon as the duo walked in,the heroes visibly brightened.

“Hey kid! What brings you over to this side of the border?”asked tony from the kitchen island where he was making what Y/n could only guess was his Nth mug of coffee for the day.

“nothing much tony,just thought id visit you guys.” She said with a smile.

“its good to see you y/n/n .” Said bucky barnes as he enveloped the teenager in a bear hug.

“Buckyyy,” she squealed out as her older-brother-figure gave her a head pat. “whoa! You got a hair cut?!” she said outloud.

“yeah,how’d I look?”he asked as turned around.

“you look so different.” She said, “but- its a good different! You look way younger”she concluded.

“thanks kid!”He said,clearly happy with her response.

Next, she made her way over to the couch where peter had seated himself down.

“TV?”she asked and he nodded.

She picked up the remote to turn the tv on when all of a sudden she heard a sarcastic little voice and launched herself out of the couch and tackled the owner of said voice.

Harley Keener had no idea what hit him and when he looked down at the cause for his fall,to see his interdemential-travelling friend. “well hey there.” He said

“HIIIII!,” she practically screamed back.She hadn’t seen Harley since 2019.

He never seemed to be around when she happened to visit.

And a second after their little exchange Y/n heard a little giggle and looked up to see tony’s daughter,Morgan Stark standing a few centimeters away from where Harley had been standing just a moment ago.

She immediately got up and scooped up the little stark and gave her a kiss on the cheek and she started laughing even more.

“how’ve you been, bean?”Y/n said through her own laughter.

“Im oka-he-he”she said through little laughs.

Next she brought her over to the couch and Harley joined her.

Tony watched this whole ordeal and smiled his signature proud-dad smile.

“okay, shall we actually watch some TV now?”peter asked exasperatedly.

“yeah lets!”replied morgan.

At this the older avengers filed out of the room waving good bye as they went,it was going to get really loud really fast now that all four of Tony’s kids,both adopted and biological,were in one place.

The quartet just waved and didn’t think anything of it.The knew they were a little loud and they didn’t mind their older friends leaving.

This way they had more room to fool around and just have fun without having to worry about bothering anyone else!

Harley saw that both the web-slinger and his world-hopping buddy were busy and snatched up the remote from peter’s hand.

“HEY!” exclaimed both Y/n and peter in perfect unison.

To which he casually retorted,“well you guys weren’t gonna turn it on anytime soon.”

They mumbled out their protests but didn’t do anything to get the remote back.

Harley pressed the big red button and turned on the TV to a familiar and nostalgic little jingle.

Both peter and y/n’s eyes widened to the size of saucers and they had huge grins on their faces.

Harley immediately face-palmed. He recognized it too.

“MONSTER MONSTER HIGH MONSTER HIGH MONSTER MONSTER HIGH,FREAKY CHIC AND FLY MONSTER HIGH,WHERE STUDENT BODIES LIE!!!”

The duo belted out the lyrics to the monster high fright song and morgan just stared at them in wonder while Harley covered his ears.

After the anthem ended,the duo went on a rant about the series from their childhood while commenting on the new wave of dolls and how absolutely sacrilegious they were,and how maybe the new creeproductions could make up for it.

They even roped morgan into it and while the three of them were occupied,Harley changed the channel and started watching battle bots.

And five minutes later Y/n gasped out loud and everything went silent,apart from the robot match on the television.

“what??”asked peter in a small voice.

“I HAVE A GENIUS IDEA!”exclaimed Y/n.

Next she leaned in and told peter and morgan her idea.

“OKAY!!”came their reply and Harley knew they’d definitely rope him into it.

Next the three of them got up and dragged Harley along with them

“where are we goin?”asked already Harley knowing that he wasn’t going to like it.

“We,my little friend,”started Y/n, “are goin on over to monster high!”

“Wait what?!”said Harley, “how??”

To which Y/n wacked him on the head, “my little trick you wackus bonkus!” she said.

“that’s not the joke-, okay fine but wont they be, oh I dunno weirded out by the sudden appearance of a few normies’”he asked.

“well I already know them and- wait how do you know we’d be considered normies??” she asked

“I…I watched a few episodes okay!” he admitted.

“I knew you were a man of culture,keener!” said peter,posin dramatically with his hands on his hips.

“okay whatever,lets get goin,or do you guys wanna stay and chat?”he asked,a smug look on his face.

“right!”said Y/n

“buckle in boys and girl,we’re goin to the most skull-tastic highschool ever!” and with that she opened another portal right in the common room.

They all stepped through and the next thing they knew,they were in a crowded hallway filled with different students from the student body of the most iconic monster school.

“Oh my fangs! Y/n is that you??”they heard a little voice and when they turned around,Y/n,peter,Harley and morgan were met with the iconic, trio of Clawdeen wolf,Draculaura and Frankie stein.

“No way…..” said peter in disbelief.

“yes way!” said Y/n.

“guys meet my ghoulfriends clawdeen,ula d and Frankie!”she added “and ghouls,meet Harley,peter and morgan!”

The Plan, Such As It Is

tl;dr: System Collapse finishes the Murderbot series on Christmas. Last week of the year is a break, and then it's the Wheel of Time with likely between-book breaks for one-offs or shorter series, and someday maybe Alecto the Ninth.

I had a great time watching Desert Bus, and helping with the VST documenting and editing and uploading clips of the process of raising over a million dollars (over ten million in the lifetime of the event!) for a good cause. A most excellent week of "restoring my faith in humanity". But that's a little beside the point of this post.

I also got my hands on System Collapse, but because of how my brain works, I won't be reading it ahead, so we're going to have lots of fun as I read it for the first time in the format of the blog. Let's see if my style changes, if my predictions are well on or off the mark. (I have seen a few posts that spoiled a few moments and character bits, but I'm not concerned about those. I rarely feel like learning things that happen "ruins" anything about an experience anyway. If the story's well told, it's still fun to experience for myself.)

After System Collapse, well, that's the end of Murderbot to-date. And, I haven't run any polls for covering other things. That's because I'm pretty well set on rereading the Wheel of Time series, and revising my previous notes to this format.

It's something I could keep putting off, but the show has gotten so good, and it reminds me of all the things about the books that I loved so much (and how the show is fixing some things I didn't love). I'll also be very excited to do full-series spoiler posts again, Murderbot didn't have a lot that I felt needed commenting on, but the Wheel? Oh, buddy.

But, the caveat here is that the Wheel of Time has, well, fifteen very large books. Eleven thousand pages, over four million words. Coverage would take about three years if I didn't take breaks for other books in between, and I definitely will, so we're gonna be here for a while. I've said before that I was hesitant to cover Discworld for this, and I still am. Discworld has over forty books just in the main series besides the spinoffs, with a comparable total wordcount to WoT. Several of those, I have negative interest in ever rereading. Even if they're largely shorter than WoT bricks, they're also trickier to split, and I won't have as much context to share about them that isn't available elsewhere already. Whereas, the Wheel of Time lacks a lot of spoiler-free resources in print, despite the series being almost 35 years old. There was a huge influx of podcast coverage once the show publicity ramped up, but not so much blog style content. The few prologues and chapters that do need splitting, I've already calculated out from the first time I took the notes.

Mind you, I will be finding time for Alecto the Ninth coverage when Tamsyn Muir finally graces us with her presence, I'll just take a break between whichever WoT books I'm up to by then. And if something else strikes my fancy, I might alternate books. Like, making it through the Eye of the World might scratch the itch well enough, and make me want to dig into the Princess Bride as I threatened to once before, or perhaps when I reach my least favourite sequence of books in the middle, I'll alternate them with the His Dark Materials trilogy, though probably not its supplementary later materials because I'm still refusing to read the Book of Dust.

I totally understand if folks who followed me for other stuff want to jump ship when my WoT coverage starts. I love and can recommend it with some massive content notes and caveats which will be in my intro post for it, but it's not for everyone and treating it like a universal joy is nonsense. But, especially if you can get a library borrow of the first book, whether you get it in print or ebook or either of the incredible audiobook narrations (the full series by Michael Kramer and Kate Reading, or the first three are now available narrated by Rosamund Pike, who plays the character of Moiraine Sedai on the show), I hope you'll give it a try with me, and my analysis and commentary might help pull you into a series that's otherwise quite intimidating.

So, System Collapse will finish posting on Christmas, I think I'll take the last week of the year as a breather, and the Wheel of Time will kick off my 2024. I hope you'll consider sticking around and reading with me, especially my Locked Tomb girlies because I've said it before and I'll say it again, these two stories have SO much in common, hashtag Women's Wrongs and unreliable narrators. And, I am gonna try to break it up every so often since these are LONG books, most of them have 40+ chapters so will be two months apiece. But either way, if I'm gonna follow my heart, it's gotta be next.

A few months ago, I watched the new season of Alan Davies: As Yet Untitled, and made several posts about one thing that happened in this one episode. Because it was so weird and it bothered me so much, mainly that no one pointed it out. I didn’t even need anyone to get in trouble, I just needed to know that I wasn’t the only person who had noticed this incredibly obvious weird thing that everyone seemed to think was fine. That thing being someone stealing a story that is well known as a stand-up story by another comedian, and this other comedian is very famous and that story is one of his favourite bits that he told all the time for many years, including telling it on TV and on the radio. So you can’t steal that. Especially not for one minute of attention on a panel show. Aside from the fact that I wouldn’t think Isy Suttie is the kind of person to engage in plagiarism, even if someone were that type of person, I don’t see why they’d steal a well known stand-up story that a famous comedian has told on TV, for one minute of attention on a panel show. Surely that isn’t worth it.

This was so confusing to me that I wrote several long posts about it, here and then here. That’s where you can find my original confused and overly long ranting about this strange phenomeon. But the summary is: John Oliver had this story about something that (apparently) happened to him on a train once, I know he was telling it at least as early as 2003 (since he told it in a Radio 4 appearance in January 2004), he told it on his New York TV show in 2010, I’m pretty sure it’s on his stand-up DVD, and I’ve heard him tell it a bunch of other times, including during TV interviews. It was a go-to story for him for years. And on a 2023 episode of Alan Davies: As Yet Untitled, Isy Suttie told that story as though it happened to her. Which I’m pretty sure it didn’t (it is possible that it really did happen to John Oliver and Isy Suttie together, but I don’t think so because I’ve heard her refer to the story on her radio show as a thing that happened to someone else, it’s a whole big thing and I already went into it in far too much detail in those earlier posts), so someone’s lying, and something strange has happened.

I spent a fair bit of those previous posts speculating about absurd scenarios in which maybe no one is lying and it’s all fine, and said at the end that I do realize all that happened is that Isy Suttie made the bad decision to tell someone else’s story, probably thinking it wouldn’t be a big deal and wasn’t even likely to make the edit, which it probably wasn’t, until Alan Davies named the episode after it. However, I’ve heard something recently that’s made me realize there is a genuine possible explanation that does not involve Isy Suttie stealing stuff on purpose.

I’ve had cause this week to re-listen to After the Beginning, Before the End, which is Daniel Kitson’s stand-up show from 2013. It’s available on Bandcamp and of course everyone should buy it along with everything else. It has this throughline where he recounts something a friend had said to him, a little at a time. At the end, there’s the bit that I cut out and uploaded above, where he finally tells the entire story, and we find out that the whole time, none of it was true. His friend Isy had taken a thing he’d once joked with her about how messed up it would be if someone did that, and later on, she’d recounted it back to him as something he'd actually done.

After the Beginning, Before the End is a show with all these themes around the unreliability of memory, and that story as a throughline is meant to be an example of that. The way someone can hear a joke, remember the thing that was joked about but forget all its context, and end up storing it in memory as a thing that really happened. That would be a good way to illustrate that, except that – I’m not sure the human brain normally does do that. I mean, it’s not unheard of, that someone would make that sort of error. But that’s a pretty big error. I’m not sure that’s a normal thing to do.

So, new theory: It’s possible that Isy Suttie just has some sort of cognitive quirk where she doesn’t remember context for stuff. Keeps stories in her head, but forgets crucial details like whether they really happened and who they happened to, and even whether or not they happened to her.

If that’s the case, it rather undermines Kitson’s central point, because that’s not a normal thing. He can’t use Isy Suttie as an example for the fallibility of human memory, because most human memories don’t function like that. Maybe the occasional error, but not one bad enough to take a story that gets told by a person you know, that you heard him tell for many years in various contexts, and end up believing it happened to you. But doing that probably isn’t any weirder than stealing someone else’s well-known stand-up story for one minute of attention on a panel show, so it's a reasonable theory. And I’ve now heard something in a different show to suggest she is prone to this sort of thing, so that's my working theory at the moment.

What a strange thing, all around. I still consider the whole situation an unsolved mystery, but I think the Kitson clip gives me the first remotely plausible explanation I've heard so far.

Fuck it hurt, it hurt so bad.

How were you supposed to know your stand didn’t work on other stands-- just on other people? It’s not like you could fight Red Hot Chili Peppers with your stand. No, Love Club was useless in combat.

You were lucky you could grab her and run somewhere where he couldn’t follow you. Still, here, right next to the sea bleeding out wasn’t your idea of fun.

You couldn’t move the two of you anywhere else safely at this moment. You could only hope Chili Peppers got bored and went off to do other things.

You were too weak to call back Love Club right now. And she was a stand other people could see… granted, she looked like an ordinary cat, it still probably wouldn’t look good if anyone saw both you and a cat bleeding from large stomach wounds.

You weren’t sure what to do. You doubted anyone knew were you were here--you had been attacked while you were all alone after all. You had thrown your phone somewhere so Chili Peppers couldn’t hurt you any more, so calling anyone was out.

Maybe the two of you would just lay here and bleed out by the ocean… There were worse ways to go, right?

“I’m… I’m sorry Love Club… I… I don’t think we can get out of this one.”

Weak as she was, Love Club still gently nuzzled her head into your palm, laying beside you where the shore met the grass.

“I hope… I hope Josuke and the others are okay. And that they kick the shit out of Chili Pepper and his user for us!”

You gasped at a particularly sharp pain, groaning as it blossomed all over your stomach and chest. Okay, yeah, this sucked pretty bad. If you made it out of this alive and ever met his user a stand fight wouldn’t even be necessary-- you would kick his ass yourself.

You had finally closed your eyes, ready to resign yourself to your fate when you heard a voice-- a familiar one at that.

“Hey, _____, there are better places to take naps you know.”

Were you just hearing things or was that Josuke?

You didn’t dare move much lest you cause yourself to bleed more but still, you peaked open an eye to see his lazy form approaching you from the cliffs.

“Josuke I swear to god--!” You choked on your breath, heaving heavily as you sat up on your elbows. “This is no time for your lame fucking… fuck… lame fucking jokes!” You took a deep breath. “I’m dying over hear asshole!”

His bright blue eyes widened as he saw you clutching the side of your stomach with Love Club by you not looking much better.

“Oh shit!” He sprinted the rest of the way towards you, kneeling by both your bleeding forms. “I had no idea you were hurt, shit, shit…” He was panicking, watching as you merely groaned and flopped over again in pain.

“Just heal me you idiot!” The words hurt to leave your throat, it was so sore and dry. You ought to hit Josuke after this.

“Uhh, right! Right…!”

With that Crazy Diamond came out and worked his magic, making it so it was as if you and Love Club had never been viciously attacked by Chili Peppers in the first place.

You sat up with a deep breath. It still hurt, a lot, but at least you could move and breath properly again.

Suddenly serious now that you were more lively, Josuke spoke. “How did this happen? Who hurt you?” He growled out, looking around the area.

“Who do you think? It was Red Hot Chili Peppers.” You frowned, watching as Love Club happily cuddled into Josuke. She always did like to be pet by him…

“That asshole!” Josuke tightened the fist of his free hand, glaring off into the distant ocean. “He should have known by now you can’t fight back!”

“No shit, why do you think he went after me when I was alone!” You sighed, shaking your head. “Man… this really sucks.” You continued looking down at your stand. Chili Peppers may have been a bird but Love Club really could do nothing about him…

“You can’t go out alone anymore _____.” Josuke looked serious as he caught your gaze. “You and Love Club… an enemy stand user could take you down at any moment. If I hadn’t come in time…” Josuke looked away for a moment, not wanting to say the words.

“Listen, listen I know… but Josuke it’s not like you can be with me at every moment.” You frowned.

“We’ll see about that.” Josuke stood and offered you a hand, which you gratefully took, blush dusting your cheeks. “I’m gonna keep you and Love Club safe from now on, okay?” You nodded dumbly, a little taken aback by Josuke’s claim as you picked up your stand.

“Y-yeah um… if you say so.” You tried to stay nonchalant, so he wouldn’t realize the words were getting to you. “I believe in you Josuke so um… I know you can do it, and all that.” You waved your hand dismissively at him.

“Now uh, lets hurry up and find my phone, okay? I had to throw it somewhere so Chili Peppers couldn’t follow me…” You rushed on ahead intent on finding it in the field.

In doing so, you missed the dumb smile that came to Josuke’s face, and the charming blush that came with it.

“I won’t let you down!” Josuke ran beside you, laughing all the way. You couldn’t help but smile as well. Maybe today didn’t have to be so bad after all…

AFTERTHOUGHTS - ROUNDUP ROUND 3

April 2023

Nintendo Switch Online Edition!!

HELLO EVERYONE! Yes, you right that right, NSO Edition. This time I'm gonna split the round up into 2 different posts. In April I spent most of the month moving. It was a particularly hard move but we managed to make it through. And some days I wouldn't have a car so I would just be sitting around with my Switch, and even after the move was done I did a lot of just sitting around cause I injured my feet during the move! So, I found myself playing a TON of Nintendo Switch Online games. I've mentioned before that I can't afford the expansion pass, but I was actually able to get 8 people who could all send me $10 each, so we were able to finally afford the $80 family plan!

As such, I've been finally getting to sink my teeth into those other emulators and try out stuff that isn't just on the default version. So get ready for a lot of N64 and Genesis stuff haha

As always, these aren't reviews just thoughts yadda yadda yadda. If you wanna play any of these play them. They're all easy to emulate (I think? Idk how good N64 emulation is atm). Anyway enjoy.

Kuru Kuru Kururin (March 21, 2001) - Gameboy Advance

Of course, we start with GBA first. I'm obsessed with this console and it's actually insane how few games on this console is available on Switch! But one of them is Kuru Kuru Kururin! Which is a game I've actually wanted to play for YEARS cause it's an assist in Brawl. But it never made its way over here (but I found out the day I played it that it WAS released in the UK so... I could have been playing it the whole time. Oops.)

But yeah now that's I've played it, I think this game is pretty cute! It's short and sweet, only having around 30 levels or something around that range. But it can be TOUGH to make it through! The game is all about patience so if you're like me, it's tough to make it through. And if you're like me, you'll use rewinds a LOT to make it through this cause you suck at waiting. Regardless, yeah, this game is fun! Cute music, cute visuals, and you can customize your ship!

Only real complaints is that some of the levels are like straight up mazes, so they can be really hard to navigate. And also in general the game is a little frustrating but I think generally people will find it very easy. Again I'm just not patient. Glad I finally got to try this one out! Would have loved to see this get a sequel on DS or 3DS or something. Oh well. Look at my custom ship! The red parts blink on and off like a warning light :)

Yoshi's Story (December 21, 1997) - N64

And here we go with some games I replayed! Recently I said in my first attempt to do a podcast (shameless plug) that I don't have a lot of memories with the N64. But getting NSO just totally brought everything back. I never forgot how much I loved Starfox 64, Paper Mario, ect ect. But I completely forgot about just how many games on this console I ADORE! One of which being Yoshi's Story!

I was OBSESSED with this game as a kid, I played every level in the game and this also spawned my love for the Black and White Yoshi! And I'm happy to say that, yeah, this game still holds up. I see SO many people say this game sucks. But honestly, I don't agree. Maybe if you payed $60 for it back in the day it'd be disappointing. And while it is easy there's a lot of levels to play and trying to get the high score can be really really tough in certain stages like the piranha plant level or the level with the big fishes.

Regardless, I still think this game is incredibly charming and fun! Great music, great visuals, i ADORE the characterization of the Baby Yoshis. This game really makes them feel like puppies? They growl and act so much like little dogs and I LOVE it. The story book aesthetic rules. I think the gameplay is great. And honestly, this might still be my favorite Yoshi game if you can believe it! My only major complaint when coming back to it is that the switch version makes a lot of the graphics look REALLY odd. This game gets the 2D stuff messed up more than anything else on the service. Very odd.

Starfox 64 (April 27, 1997) - N64

Here we go! Here is one of my all time favorite games EVER! Honestly... I don't even really think I need to write up my thoughts on it as I'm fairly certain the last time I beat this game and talked about it was just last year aha. Without a doubt, Starfox 64 is one of my all time favorites and is easily the game I have played to completion the most. I ADORE this game. So, yknow a quick run of it again wouldn't hurt right? I have NSO now anyway so I might as well...

And now we're here. Yeah, I'm not gonna sugarcoat it. This game still absolutely RULES! It's such an amazing game and shmup (do on rail shooters count as shmups? I think they should... 3D Shmups). Even all this time later and after so many playthroughs the game never fails to scratch that itch. Great music, great levels, great characters, great gameplay. And that ending. Augh, gets me every time.

If anyone is curious my favorite route is

Corneria > Meteor Herd > Starwolf > Solar > Macbeth > Area 6 > Venom. Always my favorite set of levels to run through!

Pokemon Snap (March 21, 1999) - N64

Another all time favorite! I mean... This is basically an on rails shooter, if you think about it. Just with VERY different objectives and the bullets are, yknow, photos. So it's only natural I would love this Shmup classic! For real though, if you know me you know I LOVE taking pictures in game, so I love games all about taking pictures!

I used to play Snap a TON back in the day. And after I was absolutely madly in love with the sequel that took way too long to come out, I was interested in revisit the original for a bit now. I will come out of the gate and say it, New Pokemon Snap is better by leaps and bounds. It's got tons more content and things to do. But this only speaks to how good New Pokemon Snap is, because the original still holds up great! It feels fantastic to play, it's super cute, great music, lots of lovely scenarios to take pictures of. And it's made at that cute time period where the Pokemon brand was still figuring itself out. Honestly I think seeing Pokemon just living in nature is one of my favorite ways to see them and now I REALLY wanna play more NPS!

My only real complaints outside of just, not as much to do as the sequel that came out YEARS later is that the stages are SO short! I forgot how insanely short they are! I would love them to be a little longer with more Pokemon, but again that's what the sequel is for I suppose!

I had a bunch of really nice photos I wanted to show off but I deleted my save data before the final boss so I had to play the game a second time and didn't really feel so intense to take many pictures. eh.

F-ZERO X (July 14, 1998) - N64

I feel like I NEVER get to talk about it but I LOVE FZero! It's a series I totally adore and find super fun to play! And with the small amount of games in the series (crying and dying and coping and seething) it's also not very often I get to play a game in the series I've just NEVER played before! But here we are!

I've wanted to try this game for ages but just never could really get my hands on it for one reason or another. But now I didn't really have any reason not to try it! I'd still say it's not as good as GX, but it's still REALLY good! And it's crazy to me that they were so close to the insanity of GX on the N64. Game feels AMAZING to play and has TONS of characters, alt colors for each of them, and lots of tracks! And of course the OST is SUPER GOOD but that's not surprising for FZERO. I'm not a music guy but the guitars in this game sound really good and cool. And it has the fantastic cover of Rainbow Road if you've never heard that.

Off the top of my head the only issue I really have are kinda nitpicky. it's not amazing looking, but I totally understand that it just kinda can't look crazy good on N64, it's a big game with a lot going on and it's not gonna look as good as GX I'm not stupid. But a larger problem I had is that there are SO MANY KILL PLANES! I was trying to jump around the track and kept dying super high up or the collision for the road wouldn't load in cause I guess I skipped checkpoints. Frustrating. LET ME GO NUTS!!

But yeah, good game. I played as Pico and did every track in the Novice Class cause I suck

Dr. Mario 64 (April 8, 2001) - N64

Another game I've been interested in for a while but never got to play before. This one is very odd. it's Dr. Mario so of course it's good but it actually has a story mode with 2 very slightly different stories between Dr. Mario himself and Wario! Yeah this game actually features TONS of Wario Land 3 characters which is so weird and was a big reason I wanted to check it out.

Not much to say on this one. It's Dr. Mario so it's good. But it's just Dr. Mario. Story is cute. Although I didn't have the energy to play through both stories on higher difficulties so I didn't see the true final bosses. It plays fine, looks cool, has a good amount to do. I think the game is a little brutal though. I've never played VS Dr. Mario believe it or not. And I actually think trash blocks in this game are totally detrimental to you if you're not the best at it (like me) so the enemies had a pretty easy time just filling my board with garbage. Ah well. Still neat. Wouldn't mind a new Dr. Mario with a Story Mode and maybe more stuff like Miracle Cures from Miracle Cure on 3DS.

Kirby's Dreamland 2 (March 21, 1995) - Gameboy

Random Gameboy Jumpscare! Yeah last time I played Dreamland 1 so... Why not run through Dreamland 2? Yeah, this one is a LOT better than Dreamland 1. It's got copy abilities, and a whole game set up more similar to Adventure (or Nightmare in Dreamland if you're like me aha) and it has some animal buddies from Dreamland 3! Who, of course, all have different ways of using the copy abilities so there's LOTS to see and experiment with!

Cute sprites, some really honestly very cute and nice looking environments. Good soundtrack. It's honestly pretty dang good feeling and looking for a Gameboy game! I think something that really surprised me with this one is that there's a LOT of unique and cool boss battles in this that I've never really seen before as a casual kirby fan? Nruff, Sweet Stuff, and Ice Dragon are monsters I've seen before but never as bosses. It was neat and actually surprising to not only fight whispy and stuff. I know a lot of Kirby games have new bosses. But still!

Only complaints are stuff like. Ah not enough copy abilities or animal friends. But it's still gameboy there's only so much you can jam pack into it. No, my biggest issue is easily the final boss. Which, if you've played this game you might see the screenshot and realize I didn't fight! Every game in the Dark Matter saga (DL2, DL3, 64 as far as I'm aware?) all do this annoying thing where you can only challenge the final boss after 100% completing the game. This doesn't bug me all the time as I did this for Super Princess Peach and Demon's Crest, but I wasn't like ecstatic to do it in those even though I adore those games. And while I really like these Kirby games. I'm just not crazy enough about it to sit down and try to do EVERYTHING in them at the moment. But that's just me I'm sure Kirby fans could probably 100% this with their eyes closed. And if I ever do sit down to play the entire franchise, I will make an effort to try and grab everything and finally fight the true final bosses to these games.

Pokemon Stadium (April 30, 1999) - N64

Ah now here's a game I have a lot of nostalgia for! Despite not ever doing a full playthrough of the original RBY until last year, I played Stadium a BUNCH growing up! The minigames of course, everyone did, but I actually played Free Battle with Rental Pokemon a LOT for some reason. I was really into it and I remember really wanting Stadium 2 and whatever the GC and Wii ones were called but I never got them.

And something I tried as a child but never managed to do was beat Gym Leader Castle! And now I'm happy to say I did! Did it all with Rental Pokemon of course because they... dont have RBY on Gameboy Online for some reason which is a HUGE mistake by the way. I'll just come out and say it. With your own team I feel like this game would be REALLY exciting. But looking back, with Rental Pokemon. It's REALLY boring. It feels so slow to get through and I totally understand why I just didnt have the energy without save states as a kid.

BUT this game is still nice in a lot of ways. Very charming little title and I ADORE the animations made for all 150 Pokemon. They all have tons of personality, are fun to watch, and are just plain cute. I know Pokemon Company has said there's no reason to make a game like this now that Pokemon main series games are 3D but I disagree because a game like this really allows them to showcase unique emotions and quirks in the personalities of the different species. If that makes sense. Game looks good, music is nice, and of course the announcer is LEGENDARY.

No I am not unlocking Mewtwo, I thought you got him for clearing Gym Leader castle. You do not. I looked it up, you have to do EVERYTHING. I am not doing that.

Also if you wanna see the team I took on Gym Leader Castle with. All rental Pokemon of course. But still neat! (x)

Pokemon Puzzle League (September 25, 2000) - N64

Gosh now here's a REALLY weird game. For years I've seen people say this game is absolutely awful and... honestly it's not. It's just Panel De Pon so it's good objectively. But it still sucks but like, in other ways? Like. I don't know how to describe it the game is just really weird. It's fully based around the anime, which is rare. It has one or two original animations made just for the game (I think they're made just for it)? Which is neat. And it has covers of music from the anime which is neat! I was particularly blown away by the inclusion of Catch Me If You Can from the first movie which is a song I liked a lot in highschool lol. (no Free Up Your Mind or Brother My Brother though 0/10)

But I'dunno even though it plays fine and it has a lot of stuff to do including making your own boards for people to solve which is neat. The game just feels so lame? It looks like a PowerPoint presentation and while you can pick a Pokemon to bring into battle as far as I can tell it has 0 impact on the actual battles which is a HUGE waste because the blocks have type icons on them so I feel like there's a huge missed opportunity for a Panel De Pon game with like elemental weaknesses? Idk how to describe it but it really feels fake, or maybe like a flash game you would have played on the official Pokemon website back in the day. It's not bad but even playing it for free, I'd rather just play Panel de Pon lmao. Sorry Puzzle League.

THAT BEING SAID, I did randomly beat it twice so I could get the better ending. Which I didn't bother doing for Dr. Mario 64, so that's gotta be worth something.

Pulseman (July 22, 1994) - Genesis

Speaking of Pulseman, here's a game with no Pokemon in it! I'm sure I don't have to tell anyone this at this point but Pulseman was made by Gamefreak and even has a lot of the art done by Ken Sugimori which is very neat! This is a game I've actually enjoyed for a bit as I bought it on Wii Virtual console a loooong time ago. But I could never beat it sadly. Thankfully I finally managed to get through it!

Pulseman is VERY cool! I like the character designs of Pulseman and his sidekick girl a LOT. Pulseman also has a lot of really interesting abilities, I think the ability to run fast and build up static to super charge your moves is SUPER cool! There's even some voice acting which is REALLY neat. The game feels very advanced in a lot of parts. And the game has a lot of impressive visuals and looks very good for the most part!

For the most part though. I honestly can't help but feel a little disappointed in Pulseman now that I've played it? I think a lot of the levels don't play to Pulseman's cool abilities enough, I think a lot of the levels in general kinda suck. A lot of the game looks kinda headache inducing with tons of flashing lights instead of focusing on the REALLY nice sprite art if that makes sense. I don't really remember most of the enemies and bosses. And I don't recall any of the music. Idk I hate to say it cause I love Pulseman's design and a lot about the game. But I can't help but feel like this game didn't bring out the concept's full potential.

PERSONALLY I think Pulseman REALLY could use a sequel and honestly, it's not too late. I know Gamefreak is kinda eh on not doing Pokemon every year or so but I really think Pulseman is a game that could go SO nuts nowadays with some cooler levels and expansions on Pulseman's abilities and giving him new tools he can use and upgrade using the static electricity stuff. Ah well, it's still worth playing as an interesting piece of history!

Street Fighter II - Championship Edition (March 18, 1992) - Genesis

Can you believe I've never beaten this game before? Yeah despite how much I love fighting games I only really got into Street Fighter during covid when I played Street Fighter 4 and really found myself loving Juri Han. And while I've been REALLY wanting to get the Capcom Fighting Collection, which includes this, I've just been kinda strapped for cash so I'll have to go with the NSO for Street Fighter II!

Yeah it's fine. Not mind blowing but it is REALLY interesting to go back and play this and see how much of it is still accurate to modern day fighting games? Either the genre hasn't changed much or this game just hit the nail on the head so well (probably a bit of both) but yeah it's neat that it has a lot of modern day fighting game trappings and while it feels outdated, it doesn't feel as outdated as you would expect such an old console port fighting game to feel? Idk how SF2 feels in general though cause I've barely played it. But yeah it's neat. Looks good, has good music, stuff you would expect for Street Fighter. I played as Blanka cause Cammy isn't in this version. Neat :)

Super Fantasy Zone (January 14, 1992) - Genesis

Ah never a bad time for Shmups! I have a little bit of history with Fantasy Zone as I used to LOVE playing my bootleg NES cartridge of it as a kid! Fantasy Zone is very reminiscent of Twinbee with its cute bullet hell stuff and also having a living ship. I love OpaOpa.

This game pretty good, feels great to play, looks adorable, has great boss fights, nice music. And I especially LOVE how many upgrades you can buy for OpaOpa! I just wish they were all permanent or at least lasted longer? I also appreciate that it had a kind of out of nowhere ending with a really cool and edgy dark matter concept and villain, I guess I need to research more Fantasy Zone lore!

My only problem with this game, and while this may feel stupid, I think it's fair to bring up. This game feels like it would be impossible without rewinding? It's 1 hit and you're dead, and it's a bullet hell where it can be really hard to tell where everything is including your ship (which is REALLY important to tell where that thing is during bullet hells aha). With rewinds it wasn't a problem, but I genuinely don't know if it would be possible without them. Still, it's fun so if you have NSO (or an emulator which is free btw) it's a great time!

Ristar (February 16, 1995) - Genesis

Last, but absolutely NOT least, is Ristar! HEY!! RISTAR ROCKS!? WHY DID NO ONE TELL ME THIS GAME RULES ACTUALLY!?!? I've seen it around a lot but idk the game just never really looked like something I'd enjoy. But I figured, why not? Let's give it a go. And I can safely say I was WRONG! Ristar is a FANTASTIC platformer I'm sad I never sunk my teeth into before (well, I never owned it I dont think. But still)

First off, Ristar is ADORABLE. I didn't like how he looked on the boxart but he looks GREAT in game and has some lovely animations (him making snowmen in the ice world killed me.) The music is also fantastic, the bosses are cool, and the whole game is full of really cool ideas! It's even got a neat albeit small story. But particularly, the visuals. Oh my god. This game is GORGEOUS! Ristar has such AMAZING sprite art I was honestly totally blown away by every part of the game's visuals! A part that really made my jaw drop when I first saw it is when you beat a world, the cutscene that plays when Ristar flies to the next planet looks AMAZING and also has some really beautiful music! Honestly, Ristar looks like an indie game trying to look like a Genesis game, but massively overshooting what the Genesis could actually do. And I mean that in the best way possible!

I have some nitpicks with it, I think the final boss had some attacks that were really stupid to dodge? And there were some stages that just... Weren't hitting. But I think my biggest issue with the game is similar to Pulseman's issue. Ristar has cool abilities. He can stretch his arms out and launch things around by bouncing into them like a sling shot. But, this just kind of never gets used? You use it for the spinny things but that's it? I feel like I should be able to angle enemies when I grab them to sling them into eachother, or just be using these abilities in ANY additional ways. Also the game is SLOOOOW, it's REALLY slow game. I think Ristar is another game that REALLY could use a second go around. Ristar 2 could really add to Ristar's abilities and turn up the speed! I think there's so much you could do with grappling and slinging with this character that hasn't been explored yet. PLEASE GIVE US RISTAR 2!!

Cocaine Bear (2023, dir. Elizabeth Banks) - review by Rookie-Critic

What to say about Cocaine Bear? It is schlocky, it takes awhile before the film really kicks it into high gear, the CGI on the bear is goofy, and while some of the acting is very, very good, some of it isn't that good, and I loved it. This is a movie where everyone on set was clearly having a ball the entire time, and that fun spirit leaks over into what you see on screen. The jokes land, the gore is plentiful and nasty without being too gross-out or too real (again, the CGI work isn't exactly Avatar-quality stuff), and sure, the bear looks silly, but it should look silly. Anyone saying that they wish the bear looked better is either a) a liar, or b) someone who hates fun. The whole vibe of the film is that of a cartoon version of an 80's slasher B-movie and, for the most part, it really works.

The acting in the film, outside of a couple of the more minor characters' performances, is outstanding. Not only do you have the late, great Ray Liotta in his final film appearance, but you also have Keri Russell, Alden Ehrenreich, O'Shea Jackson Jr., and Margo Martindale all giving great performances. However, and I mean this as no disrespect to any of the amazing actors I just mentioned, but none of them even hold a candle to the scene-stealing ability of Christian Convery. That kid is, other than maybe, MAYBE the bear, the funniest thing in the film by a country mile. From the second he shows up, it seems like every line that comes out of his character's mouth is pure comedic gold, and that doesn't let up until the credits start to roll. I've been aware of Convery since his turn as the titular character in Netflix's Sweet Tooth, and I was aware that he was an incredible young actor from that alone, but I had no idea just how funny he could be. Another high point of the film is that it doesn't shy away from the ridiculousness of its premise, and leans into it in the best, goriest way that it can, à la Tucker & Dale vs. Evil. It really feels like a bad 80s slasher mixed with the cocaine equivalent of a stoner comedy, but the kind of bad 80s slasher that you secretly really enjoy because everything that's happening, especially the gory deaths, are creative and well executed (pun definitely intended). I won't go into details of any specific thing, because more than half the fun of the film is staring, jaw dropped and eyes wide, at the pure blissful horror that is unfolding in front of you.

It's not all sunshine and cocaine, though; the film wants to be a cult classic so bad that it still falls prey to some B-movie problems. Firstly, the story is a little too boilerplate and basic for how much time the film spends setting it all up, and it causes a majority of the first act to be very slow. It's not the worst thing in the world, it manages to keep you engaged and holds a couple of the film's funnier moments (one in which the two main children find one of the bricks of cocaine), but when compared to the insanity that kicks off in the film's second and third acts, it is pretty boring. Also, there are a few sequences that feel poorly edited, mostly in the film's final act. It seemed like there were last minute decisions made to cut scenes out of the film, and then last-last minute decisions were made to somehow cut them back into the film. There's one flashback scene in particular that felt incredibly out of place to me. So much so that it honestly reminded of something along the lines of a Family Guy cutaway. I also could have used a bit more of Isiah Whitlock Jr.'s character, but that's just because he's fantastic in everything he's in.

Cocaine Bear isn't perfect, I won't even venture to call it great, but it was a fantastically fun distraction. It revels in its stupidity, it revels in its gory moments, and it revels in the fun it knows everyone on screen and everyone in the audience is having. A purely fun, harmless, hilarious, coke-addled roller coaster ride.

Score: 7/10
