Mr. Fenton is a competent teacher. Almost too competent.
If Mr. Daniel Fenton had any more than a BS (with a minor in education), Tim would’ve flagged his profile as a potential Rogue. That’s the way of most charismatic academics, at least in Gotham. (Got a PhD? Instant watchlist.) Instead, he’s Gotham Academy’s newest celebrity, as a young, passionate, out-of-towner substitute while the chemistry teacher’s on maternity leave.
Tim gets the hype. Fenton seems to genuinely love teaching, and is invested in the welfare of the student body. He hands out bananas during exam week, hosts a “study habits seminar” each month to coach effective learning strategies, and the third time Tim falls asleep in his class, he even pulls Tim aside to ask if he’s doing okay. With all the late work he accepts and the protein bars he sneaks Tim, he’s every teen vigilante’s dream teacher. He could’ve been Tim’s favorite.
In fact, Mr. Fenton was Tim’s favorite. Up until Tim walks into Mr. Fenton’s chemistry classroom for a forgotten textbook, an hour after the final bell.
On the board where tallied scores for today’s review game had been kept, “THE CHEMISTRY BEHIND DR. CRANE’S FEAR GAS: ANXIOGENICS, NERI’S, & YOU,” is now scrawled. A detailed diagram of the human endocrine system projects in front of a small crowd of adoring and attentive students.
Fenton is wrist-deep in the skull cavity of an anatomical model. A short tug, and out pops the brain.
It’s plastic. It’s fake.
Tim identifies the nearest emergency exit.
Fenton turns to the door, and in the dark classroom with the projector illuminating half his face, his eyes almost seem to flash red. “What’s up, Tim?” he asks. His friendly grin is too big for his face. “I didn’t know you wanted to join the Just Science League!”
[OR: Danny’s a science teacher at Tim’s school. Gotham’s a pretty wild place, even for someone who grew up a superhero in a ghost-infested town, so he takes it upon himself to start a club teaching kids how to manage themselves in the event of a crisis. These Gothamites are pretty hardy, but a little extra training never hurt anybody! And he suspects one of his students might be a teen vigilante, like he’d been, back in the day. As a senior super, it's Danny’s duty look out for him! Surely, this is the subtlest and most appropriate way to give the kid pointers.]
[Tim immediately assumes supervillain.]

Y'all remember this scene in the pilot where Charlie calls Lilith and says that 'dad was right about me'? I desperately need to know what exactly he said to her because even tho the pilot is technically still canon, show Lucifer doesn't seem like the kind of guy to outright call Charlie a failure/disappointment to her face

I think fans want Jason to be a good person or be becoming one. To have a character that is well meaning and compassionate but decided murder is ok and to stand against main heroes who’s beliefs and actions go against the people he cares about and wants in his life. It’s confusing for people. People want their fav characters to be happy. But Jason can’t have his family’s support and follow his moral code. He’s cares about people and Gotham, and he’s an asshole who kills. It’s messy. It’s not black and white. I don’t even think Jason cares about being a good person or in the right anymore. I think he cares about what will save the most people instead.
Oh my goodness gracious I’ve been bamboozled
Batman’s definition of Good is not synonymous with absolute good/right no matter how much dc insists it is. Torture, battery/assault, surveillance, those are all condemnable actions too. I won’t get into the exhausting and frankly dumb debate of comic book morality wrt killing because I’ve already reblogged plenty of posts from other people who explained my thoughts on the matter far better than I ever have the patience to sit down and articulate. I also just think the notion that there’s something to be done about fictional characters who kill nazis and senseless murderers is stupid. Jason’s point is that the “main” heroes’ sanitized definition of right has its unaddressed holes and flaws which ultimately result in more preventable fatalities, and that he’ll work to correct those missing spots.
He doesn’t not care about doing what’s right. What he doesn’t care about (at least during his Winick characterization) is whether Batman thinks he’s right or wrong, because he sees the flaws in Batman’s methodology (and since he has a mind of his own). Batman’s methods alone cannot address Arkham’s revolving door and the rogues that come and go through those doors who have no intention (or capability from the doylist pov) of ever changing or undergoing redemption. Jason knows that he’s minimizing the number of preventable deaths by killing his targets, typically Characters Who Simply Do Fucked Up Shit Just Because, Why The Fuck Not?
Secondly, Jason is compassionate … to a fault. That was his fatal flaw. If he wasn’t so hell-bent on saving his potential birth mother he just met from that bomb despite everything she did to him prior, he could have protected himself instead, however slim his odds of survival were. What about his relationship with his other parents? He was a caregiver during his early childhood years for Catherine, until her death. Even mature adults who are financially stable find being a caregiver to a dying parent to be extremely burdensome on their bodies and minds, but he never complained about it or resented Catherine for being unable to care for him. Despite how none of his parents have really been what he needed them to be, he doesn’t blame them for their failings, and even continues to think highly of them (Bruce included).
And post-death? Enter Lost Days. Despite being dead set on plotting his revenge on Bruce, he constantly sidelines this in order to save other victims who are helpless like he once was. His own anger, trauma, and mission don’t remain his priority. (Sound familiar? Something something my own trauma above my son’s, mission above all else, etc.). Why would he waste precious time and risk his own life to do this if he wasn’t empathetic towards these victims or didn’t care about doing the right thing. He is simultaneously horribly traumatized and full of rage, and also incapable of ignoring what’s happening to victims around him (even as he claims that it’s indeed not his priority). And in that same vein, the entire premise of his rebirth outlaws run was that he doesn’t care if the public views him as a villain, an outlaw, so long as he can protect Gotham. And anyway where is this portrayal of him not caring about being in the right anymore. Almost every modern Jason story is about him grappling with where he stands with Bruce/Batman. During the early 2000s was probably the last time he did not care (hello, tentatodd??).
Jason has very evidently been portrayed as a kind and compassionate character. He is also simultaneously a calculated killer who doesn’t hesitate to kill when he deems necessary, and does so without remorse. It’s called being a Complex Character With An Edge™ that as you said, people so often claim to love. However when he fulfills that latter part, that seems to upset people because “killing bad”, and they then try to shave off and round out all his edges and claim he shouldn’t be that angry. In that case I guess you should just stick to liking traditional one-dimensional characters instead of claiming to like Jason but then encouraging his character assassination attempt by dc. Lol.
Lastly, who said anything about the batfam making Jason happy? Just because he’s written nowadays to want acceptance from Bruce (a shoddy attempt at forcing a non-existent nuclear batfamily), doesn’t mean that it’s a sound decision or that it does his character justice. I certainly don’t empathize with the idea that Jason needs the family’s approval or acceptance to be happy. (And anyway he has enough outlets for angst and pain aside from the batfam hello explore his other sources of trauma and do more deep dives into how he thinks when he’s alone). I don’t want them to magically make up and become one big happy family. This is not disney Lol. Besides, there are plenty of stories from dc that have that type of “wholesome” (hate that word utilization) characterization for Jason (Li’l Gotham, Tiny Titans, wfa, and even new stuff like the brave and the bold mini) and that is sufficient imo. Jason fans who are invested in the character deserve accurate, nuanced characterization and well-written stories, whether they be from his robin days (e.g., Batman: The Cult) or as red hood.
#fellas. ya know what else is wholesome? avenging your own death#you can have moments of ‘reconciliation’ or peace but still maintain a strained relationship which is far more realistic#‘he’s an asshole that kills’ and Bruce is an asshole who doesn’t kill. lol.#you can’t claim Jason’s conflicted and disturbed but go on to say Bruce is perfectly sane those two are mutually exclusive#also please realize that a character acting out of anger does not mean they lack compassion.#implying that he doesn’t care about doing the right thing is saying the same thing that person said;#that he doesn’t actually know what he’s doing. that he hasn’t thought through his moral stance.#‘Jason didn’t put any thought into anything he did in utrh he’s just a poor mentally ill lost soul who needs the batfam’s love to heal 💔’#🤝#‘jokers just a poor victim of society 😔 he just needs someone to understand him and maybe one day he’ll heal and realize he’s wrong’#what they both have in common is that they’re misunderstood in opposite directions#the joker doesn’t have a point to prove. there’s no deeper meaning behind what he does. everything is a joke to him.#he isn’t unaware of right vs wrong lmfao#jason todd#dc#asks#my post#and I think you’re implying that he’s utilitarian based on that last part but I don’t think he is#user mintacle posted a few metas regarding that and again they explain it much better than I prob could#anyway it isn’t difficult to understand his character if you know why you like him and you actually read his stories#that post specifically was from someone who clearly said they did not read the comic so. technically they’re on their own wavelength#edit: grammar

It’s 4am so have a twisted Ninjago au lets go
~~~
The ninja are trying to fight a retreating Garmadon and take back the golden weapons. Soon enough Kai is the only one able to keep up.
“Give it up Lord Garmadon! Evil will never win!” Kai cries, managing to knock the sword of fire out of one of Garmadon’s hands.
The dark lord freezes for a split second.
“What? I’m on the side of good!”
Kai scoops up the fallen golden weapon off the ground, feeling it’s energy sweep through him as he dual wields legendary gold and home crafted silver.
“Nice try! Our master told us about the evil snake venom in your veins”
Garmadon’s eyes widened in a momentary confusion.
“I was never bitten. It was Wu who had been bitten“
"You Up For Joining Us?"
A Part II to my first Bill Scully POV fic here; and dedicated, again, to @baronessblixen for poking the Muse back into writing mode~.
*****
Bill had arranged it with Dana ahead of time: Dad’s first mates guarding the perimeters while Charlie, Hessa, and the kids stood inflexibly in the middle.
As usual, their mom slipped away from the rules, tying her trembling bereavement to Dana's strength; and Tara drifted closer to him, burrowing tighter into his grip until Bill pulled her against his shoulder.
Charlie’s grief hissed out in great huffs of air, Dana’s voice cut the silence with undetectable questions, and their mother's answers wavered, distant and dismayed.
“Bill, don’t you let go,” Tara whispered, both aware he was the one trembling.
And all Bill could think about was Melissa, taking the long route home over the vast, watery grave of the late Captain Scully.
*****
The house was quiet: Dana had left immediately after the service to work, face closed and lips sealed; Maggie had slipped from room to room until she sealed herself away to cry; and Charlie had wrangled his rich blood wife and two sons into the car to revisit old Maryland Scully haunts.
“I should call Melissa,” Bill rasped, rubbing a hand across his eyes, wondering if his father would already have done so. So many “done so”s still to learn.
“I’ll give her a ring if she doesn't check in by five.” Tara plopped a husband-sized mug of childhood memories and cinnamon sticks on his side of the couch and pulled a wife-sized chair up next to him. “Why don’t you put your feet up, Sweetie? I made Mom’s apple cider you love.”
“How do you always know what to do?”
“Because I have you captured between… what did Dana say were the ribs right on top of the heart?”
“I can’t remember.” He sank down next to her, mood softening despite the Charlie-shaped headache throbbing between his eyes. “Did you get to talk to her?”
“Mm, no. She was… I think she wanted to be left alone. She had her face on, y’know?”
“Angry? At you? What'd she say?”
“Nothing! She wasn’t... she was, y’know, withdrawn. Quiet. So, I left her alone.”
The couch, Bill realized, was comfortable; and he slipped his dress shoes off to half sit, half recline along the length of it. That, and the drink was good. “There’s something a little extra in this, Honey. What’d you put?”
“Dad’s ashes.”
Both of them snapped up at Charlie’s voice, his towering torso and knitted brows appearing in the doorway a second later. “I’m driving Hessa and the kids back to the hotel. We still doing the photo albums later?” The pretense was hollow: everyone knew he and the wife would find and excuse and be out before it got too dark.
Bill wondered why Charlie still bothered. “Yeah, if Mom’s up for it.”
“Great. See you guys then.” The torso and scowl slid away, light steps tripping over themselves down the hall and out the slammed door after a few customary noises.
“Just couldn’t keep it to himself, could he? Had to spread it to everyone else.”
Tara sighed and reached for one of his cinnamon sticks. Both knew they were hers, anyway.
*****
A few weeks after the police and FBI and press had turned his sister’s apartment upside down, Bill walked in and was nearly crushed by his mother’s fierce hug and flashing, determined eyes.
“Dana will be back soon, and you know how fastidious she is about her apartment. I want this place ready for her when she gets here.”
“Mom--”
“And we won’t argue about it, William Scully, especially when there’s work to be done.”
They worked until the moon streamed through the garishly taped window, sporadically reflecting off of tiny, bloodied specks of glass previously concealed in the carpet.
“Hidden in plain sight,” his mother had muttered; and Bill quickly distracted her with Melissa's spotty news and his and Tara’s five-year plan: a child hopefully by next year, or an incumbent relocation to better technology in California.
He didn’t tell her no one expected Dana to return, and that he and Tara decided to name their first daughter after his lost sister.
*****
Melissa picked up on his fourth attempt.
“Billy, is something up? Mom called, but I’m usually not at this number--”
“Melissa, Dana’s back.”
“Day’s back? Where’d they find her? Is she okay?”
“She’s in a coma.” The seconds hand ticked louder and louder in his ears. “Look, Melissa, I know you hate hospitals, but Mom needs you there."
“Of course. I’ll join you three as soon as I can. Is Charlie with you? Tara, Hessa?”
“It’s just Mom.”
More silence, then a pitying, “Oh, Bill….”
“Can’t be helped, so keep an eye on them for me, Missy-- and leave the woowoo talk out. Mom’s got enough on her plate as it is.”
“I’ve got a bus to catch and a flight plan to figure out, so I'll be unreachable for a bit. And don’t call Mom because it’ll be quicker for me to get there. Love you, call you soon.”
“Love you, Miss.”
*****
Melissa was back in California, wiling the hours away with tea and toffees for Tara until night fell and the latter went to bed. Bill found her stuffed in the corner of their temporary love seat, plucking contemplatively at the cheap threads poking from its arm.
“Burning the midnight oil? That’s more Dana’s style.”
She smiled warmly and leaned over to yank the pathetic thrift store cushion from Bill’s designated indent. “I haven’t had a talk with her like that for years. Now, she’s so…. She used to have such free-flowing energy, but she’s blocked all the paths off into their own, separate loops instead of connecting them back together. Like us." Melissa locked eyes, rebukingly shaking her head at the Scully stubbornness. "We just got her back, but we're all no different than we were right before Dad died.”
“Well, what do you suggest I do? Ditch Tara and fly across the country on the hope that Dana or Charlie will clear their schedules and meet up? Between the Navy and Tara’s treatments, I don’t have time to iron out the family problems; and all you’ve gotten them to admit is that Dana wishes she had more time for us, and Charlie only remembers we exist once or twice a year."
Melissa slowly nodded, blinking once, twice, in silence.
“Missy? Is there something wrong?”
“Mom had a dream again.”
He scoffed and looked at the ceiling in disbelief. “I don’t want to hear this.”
“It’s important, Bill. Mom had a dream like the one before Dana disappeared, only… she didn’t see who was in danger or why. And she’s frightened to death-- afraid it’ll happen all over again. And even if she were to tell Dana, Day's so closed off she won't even listen to her inner voice anymore."
“Men and women put their lives on the line of duty every day, Miss, and nothing bad happens. The nut that took Dana lucked out on a one-in-a-million chance; and it won’t happen again no matter how many guys she puts away. If Dana wants to waste her second chance on the field and her superiors greenlight her antics, then there’s nothing I or you or Mom or even Charlie can do to change her mind.”
Melissa fiddled with her fingers, spacey and distant. “It’s not just that, Billy. I’ve had a feeling, lately.” She returned to the present, studying his face for a long moment before clutching, desperately, at his arm. “And it feels permanent.”
The irrational conviction in her eyes was both moving and goading. “Then feel this, Missy: a year from now, Mom’ll only be having nightmares about the baby crawling around this rat trap apartment until a house on base opens up. Dana will take just enough time off to visit for the holidays, Tara might dye her hair red again to fit into the Scully family Christmas photo, and we’ll all pretend you aren’t handing off hosting duties to your roommate while secretly keeping your niece to yourself.”
Melissa was charmed, if not relieved. “With our luck, it’ll be another boy. Besides, you and Tara want one, anyway.” Elbowing him playfully in the gut, she scooted over and shoved the pillow against his shoulder. Voice softening, she wistfully added, “But if it were a girl, I’d be devoted to her. We Scully women have so few people to look out for us.”
*****
There was no Christmas, no baby, and no warning; only another somber gathering, one less family member, and a gray, lifeless inscription:
MELISSA
SCULLY
BELOVED SISTER
AND DAUGHTER
1962-1995
*****
Thank you for reading~
Enjoy!
Working kids. Davey twists the word in his head, tries to bend himself into it – but he knows he doesn’t fit, not really. He’s not quite sharp enough to fit all the edges, too soft to press himself into the corners. Maybe he’s not a working kid at all. Not a working kid, not a gentleman, not even a decent student…
Maybe he’s not anything.
I want to hear from you as a fellow shipper: 1. Out of all the humans that Sigewinne has encountered in her probably long life, what makes Wriothesley special? 2. In turn, what makes Sigewinne special to Wriothesley? Side note: Fontaine has really been emphasising on the human-non-human relationships (Neuvia, Callirhoe and Finch, Neuvifuri) and how they have changed each other, and I would be very happy if they do continue in that direction and give us significant Wriosige moments. I personally think that their best dynamic would be a complementary contrast to NeuviFuri's - as in NeuviFuri revolutionised against the tyranny of Celestia and the Heavenly Principles and were the lead actors in the drama that was Act V, but WrioSige are more down-to-earth and "realistic", quietly improving the Fortress one reform at a time (and because it's been bugging me a lot, I hope post-Archon Quest events give ample time to develop the reforms of the justice system in Fontaine bc if it's as simple as "Neuvi ascends to power" it's still a shit system).
Do they have to be special? Is it not enough that, of all the people they've met across their lives, something slowly came to life as they spent time together?
I don't know much about love, really. I'm aromantic, so it's a feeling that will forever be out of my grasp. But I do know I don't really believe in soulmates, or in "the one". I believe you either find, or build a connection with someone, and that "someone" can be many people.
I do think Sigewinne has been Wriothesley's only romantic interest across his life, if just because he was sent to Meropide when he was still very young - 10 to 15 years old, most likely, considering Genshin seems allergic to characters older than 30. You can fall for your fellow inmates, Avice and Faissolle have shown as much, but under the previous warden I doubt that was much of an option - and his focus was largely elsewhere. As was everyone else's, really. Every day was pretty much a fight to survive. And that leaves Sigewinne, who was likely there before the previous warden and who will still be there once someone takes over after Wriothesley. Her existence almost feels separate from the rest of the prison. Pair that with the fact that he fought a lot and so probably saw her a lot to get patched up, and she starts standing out to him. She's kind, but she isn't naive. Humans to her are both endearing and interesting, and neither of those feelings are malicious. And she's much, much smarter and older than she looks. Compared to what most other people in Meropide had to offer, plus those inhuman traits unique to her, no wonder she caught his eye and later on his heart.
Sigewinne, though, has lived a long time. Several centuries is a safe assumption. We know from Neuvillette's story quest that the relationship between humans and mélusines hasn't always been good, but it's been better for many decades. And with her interest in them, I'm willing to bet several humans caught her attention long before Wriothesley was even born - likely all for different reasons too. She might not have understood her own feelings back then, though - in fact she might only have come around to understanding "love" by the time she met Wriothesley. Those that came before him paved the way, in a way. If she were to find a pattern across all those that caught her eye, I'd say she likes strong characters. People who stand their ground and keep their beliefs at heart even when all the odds are stacked against them. It's fascinating to her, because it's not a feeling that comes naturally to her the way it does to them. She sees a spark in them, one that's very literal in her mélusine eyes, and she's drawn to it. And maybe they remind her of an old friend, too.
(And my friend I sure hope we'll get more interactions between them as more patches come out. As you said, Fontaine has been delivering on the side of relationships with nonhumans and I want more of it. Especially these two. They're so casually married, I'm still not over the photos conversation.)
i don’t know why i still remember this but back when until dawn first came out, i watched mark and jack’s playthroughs first. when it got to josh having his breakdown when mike and chris were tying him up in the shed, they were both kinda laughing and being like why are you being so weird
then i watched emma blackery’s playthrough and she said how sad the scene was. and i just remember thinking how true that was. we were watching a kid’s mental breakdown; watching his mask fall and seeing what he was actually thinking and going through after losing his sisters. his delusion of power and perception of reality was broken and seeing how quickly he declined mentally was heartbreaking. and it’s only made worse later in the game when we find his transcripts from his therapists and see him experience auditory and visual hallucinations
it’s just interesting how the scene hits completely different to people who have faced mental illness than to people that haven’t
I’m honestly really excited to read the frog heist fic when it’s done. It’s the type of fic I need in my life rn
(Also ngl, when I saw the first post about Jonathan releasing the frogs, it made me think of that one scene in E.T where Elliott starts freeing the frogs from the jars. Middle school Jonathan 100% did the same thing and got sent to the principals office)
Hi Emily,
I am ALSO excited to read the frog heist fic. It's going to be so silly but they deserve to be silly. I need dumb seventeen year old shenanigans.
(Also 100% my boy is against animal cruelty)
I wonder if Barbie and Ken were confused when they went to the real world and discovered that their clothes weren't magically appearing on their bodies at the shop, and that they had to actually put them on themselves.
But maybe they were already aware of humans not having magic like that. Maybe they know everything in BarbieLand is based on your imagination. They seemed aware of other things for some reason? They know what genitals are even if nobody in BarbieLand has any at all, which also confuses me? They know they're dolls being played with, which makes sense bc that's their purpose. Do they have some sort of awareness of the real world automatically when they're created, because they know they're being played with? Do they HAVE to have some idea of how certain things work in the real world? Margot said there was going to be a scene where Barbie and Ken actually do try to kiss each other after the dance party but neither of them knew how kissing would work so they'd just bonk their faces together, but they couldn't pull it off without making it look awkward so they scrapped the scene. And in the movie it seems like they do know how kissing would work bc Ken goes for a kiss three times.
Barbie didn't react when she drank tea for the first time, she didn't react to the taste of it. At first I thought maybe she'd just be so focused on making sure she didn't spill it that she didn't care what was hitting her taste buds, but then I remembered that she reacted with disgust when she "drank" the imaginary expired milk. So the fake food does have taste in their world. That's interesting.
#but that last part also confuses me bc margot said in an interview that barbie DOESNT taste things#she was like 'she'd be thrilled to try any food in the real world for the first time'#'if she had crackers she'd think they're amazing just bc she's actually eating them'#but why would she be thrilled if she CAN taste in barbieland?#maybe margot forgot bc she was working on the movie for literaly years and that scene shes eating waffles is barely 2 seconds#or maybe i misunderstood and she meant she would just enjoy food that they dont make in barbieland#like idk they probably dont have plastic crackers#would barbie be surprised to turn on the shower and it's real water shooting in her face?#would she be surprised to step on the pool and actually fall into it instead of walking over it?#they experienced elements in the real world for the very first time#i wonder if they felt the heat of the sun and wondered what the hell that was#i wonder if they'd react to rain. if they knew what that is or if they'd be like 'oh kids pretend it rains when they play all the time'#do the kens magically change clothes too? they dont have closets or homes#where the hell do they get dressed? do their barbies give them clothes??#kens got no house no car no phone no email no job no prospects he's got NOTHIN#ryan gosling rly said ken has absolutely fucking nothing but he's got all the genitals#interested in horses but not interesting as a person at all dont make that mistake thats a slippery slope#his words not mine#woof
