@raventhekittycat
hi okay so I've been mulling this one over for the past day or two and I think I have the answer. not to be using hamburger to explain anything to an american but you're my detco mutual so I'm going to try and explain it in detco terms
There's a post going around recently about how if you've read detco and only detco, the first time hakuba shows up you're going to be totally flummoxed, because damn this guy is clearly important, he gets to be even cooler than Shinichi, he's got a half-page shot of him (in such a panel-dense series such as Detective Conan, no less!!) and he's got a fucking hawk. he's CLEARLY important. everything about the narrative is indicating that you need to PAY ATTENTION to hakuba and that he's the coolest guy and he's important!!!! and then he dies in the case lol (not for real. but still.)!! and you're like huh??? what was that. why did aoyama do that.
But with the context of magic kaito this totally makes sense. He's a beloved character that people have been waiting decades to see again. Of course Aoyama is going to hype him up!! It's his big moment after years of being locked in the backrooms!!!
Anyways reading birdmen for me was kind of like that. The author's previous series, Kekkaishi, was pretty one-dimensional at the beginning, and even after the main plot started picking up at around volume 6, it still felt quite understandable. I knew what she was trying to get at, and the spectacular job she did with the anthropocene and climate change metaphor towards the end of that series really made me interested in the rest of her works. That and the way she writes familial relationships is absolutely DEVASTATING. (I mean this with the highest of praise)
But when I read BIRDMEN for the first time, I was probably in... middle school, maybe? And I read it, sure, but I didn't get it. I could see what was literally happening on the page but the narrative choices were absolutely baffling at times. Why skip over the entire part of the plot where they figure out who the birdman that saved them was? She blatantly doesn't care about that. What does she care about then?? I knew I didn't get it, I knew there were parts of it that were important and I couldn't figure out why and THAT'S how it dug its pretty little claws into me. Even after I finished catching up it nagged at me a little bit, not often at all, but enough that every once in a while I go, huh, right, that was a thing, let me go read it again.
For the record this type of story haunting has happened to me twice. First time was the Heart of Thomas, second time was BIRDMEN. I think the thing is that these are both stories which are not what other people say they are and I think I came into both of these stories with a misconception, trying to look too hard for things that weren't important and therefore missing the things that were.
Because sure, BIRDMEN is about mental illness. Yeah, it's about an evil scientific organization growing mutants in a lab. Yeah, it's about what it means to leave your humanity behind. That's all technically correct, on a surface level, and the fandom at large likely agrees with these takes for the most part, but in my opinion none of that really delves into what the thematic messaging of the story is about.
There are cryptic conversations about authority and human extinction and peculiar outfit and ability choices. You can tell these choices weren't made to serve the purpose of "writing exciting shonen manga" because that was what she did for the most part in Kekkaishi and you can tell she wasn't putting her whole pussy into doing that here. So what was she doing? What's like. All of this. Waves my hands at this.
The short answer is that it's really about the interplay between capitalism (represented by humanity) and communism (represented by birdmen), and explores the role institutional white supremacy (EDEN) plays in enforcing capitalism. It is ALSO about queer liberation and the importance of community, but hey, that double-stacks conveniently with the communism metaphor.
But also take this opinion of mine with a grain of salt. As far as I know I'm the only one who really truly deeply believes that it is not only AN interpretation of the work, but one that was fully intended by the author.
So basically, I like it, because I think it says something true and beautiful that I also believe in, even if I didn't have the words for it the first time I read it. But I don't really think that's what people really look for in a media recommendation.
Do I like it? Yes, I love it. Will I recommend it to others? Yeah, sure. But do I think it's deeply flawed? Yeah, absolutely. It's flawed in the same ways as The Witch from Mercury— a rushed ending, too many threads that were opened and never tied together. The pacing and characterization is perfect in the beginning, and too rushed at the end. There are prerequisites you basically HAVE to read in order to understand the story (tempest for G-Witch and the communist manifesto for birdmen). I think a truly good story wouldn't have any of these things so if people don't like it I never blame them.
It's my personal experiences that make birdmen so profound to me. If you are not queer I just don't think Eishi coming out as a birdman to his mom will hit the same, just as an example. Sorry that I wasn't the kid you wanted me to be. I know you love me and you just want the best for me and that's why you're so controlling, because you think I can be saved by conforming to societal expectations. But I can't live like that. I can't be like that. And that's why I must go. etc.
Aesthetically I do love birdmen a lot. If I had to describe it in a few words it would probably be "chilling", "beautiful", and "powerful", which nicely coincides with the type of things I personally like to draw. It's also silly to a small degree but it's so serious and I know Tanabe can be way way way funnier (read kekkaishi for this. kekkaishi and hanazakari no kimitachi he were foundational to my sense of sequential art humor) so that's not really the standout trait of this series.
I can't let it go because I'm chewing this series like a bone. And it's taking me years but I am getting that sweet sweet marrow. By god. We are on year 3 of this shit and I am GOING to understand this series. and I'm going to make 3 video essays about it
#just thinking thoughts...#stray bird thoughts#so it's like... I don't like it because birdmen is good#I think I like it because I am a certain type of person and the author was trying to say something specifically to the type of person I am#OH#I'M THE TARGETED AUDIENCE THATS WHY I LIKE IT.#YEAH THATS REALLY IT!!!#A long time ago I said that birdmen wasn't written for the people who read it at the time it serialized.#it was written for the people they would become.#and I stand by that 100%#if it really stays with you there is going to be a reason even if you can't articulate it yet#and it may APPEAR sloppy to someone who doesn't see the queer or communist metaphor#like 'what is she doing what is she saying here she's not saying anything meaningful and emphasizing the wrong things'#but that sort of presumes she is gunning to make 'the best shonen manga ever'#which she clearly isn't.#I remember when I was reading fma with a bunch of my classmates and I'd lend them a volume or two every day#and a piece of feedback I received that has stuck with me was 'volume 15 was so boring'#(that was the volume recounting the ishval civil war. it was boring because we were middle schoolers and didn't REALLY get it.)#and like. I think to people who are looking for something like kks. the whole thing is going to feel like fma volume 15#like WHAT is she going on about? ? ?#like witch hat and dunmesh I think are similar types of stories but I think these two are just executed way better than bm#but because of that it is just not as compelling to me you know.#like yeah yeah it's well constructed. we all see it's well constructed.#the metaphor is so well constructed that I don't feel the need to point it out. everyone is saying it already you know#but bm is cryptic enough and just slightly missed that execution enough that I feel like I'm pulling the analysis out of a smoking wreckage#recently I've been watching mentourpilot videos about airplane accidents and like. that's exactly it.#there's nothing to say about a perfectly executed flight.#it's the ones that failed. and in particular the ones that just barely failed by a little bit. that compels people the most.#cue my de communism is failure post. bc that bm sure did fail.

Hi @eas-kat ! Your secret santa is here skskskks I'm sooo sorry for being late but I really hope you enjoy the fic TwT I never thought it would take this long tbh sigh. Shout out to @bestillmyfastbeatingheart for being my beta huaaaa ToT Thanks to @dcmkkaishinevents for making this event too hehe VvV/
(Sneak peak for every chapter under the cut)
0 : Prologue
“YOU!!!! Why didn’t you stop–”
Trailing off, he finally took a proper look at Kudou-kun. Ginzou blinked and raised his eyebrow at Kudou-kun while the teen looked at him back with a bored look.
Some of his task force was surprised when they saw the Heisei Holmes in a blue dress and this night's target was on his neck. Others gave him pitying looks.
“What happened?”
Kudou-kun just shrugged like he was okay with whatever was happening right now.
“That jerk put these on me. Anyhow, can someone open the necklace for me and does anyone have spare clothes?”
1 : First Meeting
“No! He stared at us back then and took a long time to release you before. Then there’s how he suddenly wanted to join us and now he wants your number Shinichi-niichan!”
“What if he is a stalker?!"
“Or maybe a murderer?!”
When he heard this, Kaito wanted to deny them and wanted to defend himself. He opened his mouth but Shinichi suddenly scoffed.
“That’s stupid. He’s not a criminal. I’m sure of that.”
2 : Weekly Outings
Pouting, they looked away and nodded. Shinichi grinned at their response.
“Great! Now, let’s go play all the games here!”
Shinichi took Ayumi’s and Mitsuhiko’s hands before he walked away. Then, he looked behind his shoulder to see Genta and Kuroba tensing while looking at each other. Kuroba suddenly held out his hand for Genta to hold. Shinichi could see Genta hesitated for a moment, before he finally took Kuroba’s hand.
Smiling softly, Shinichi really hoped the three little kids would finally accept the magician at the end of the day.
3 : Angry Detective
“Caught you.”
“Stay away from them, you bastard!!!”
Hearing the familiar voice, the Detective Boys snapped their eyes open. They watched a fast soccer ball hit the man’s face and the man fell back.
“Guys! Are you alright?”
Kaito asked while the kids flinched at Shinichi’s glare.
4 : Sick Magician
“Sh-Shinichi! What are you doing here?”
Shinichi shrugged before answering.
“Keep you company.”
Shinichi then frowned at him. He whispered after that.
“You’ve eaten….”
Kaito wondered if he had heard that right because Shinichi had sounded a little bit disappointed. He then watched the detective sigh.
“Of course, you have. What did I expect? Aoko-san has said that she has cooked for you after all.”
5 : Christmas Party
“Tomorrow is going to be Christmas. So, do you want to spend it together with us? Me, Agasa-hakase and Shiho.”
Kaito blinked at the offer. He didn’t notice how long his brain had stopped, but next thing he knew, Shinichi was glaring at him. The warmth on his gloved hand was also gone.
“Oi! I’m asking you here. Or do you have other plans tomorrow?”
“N-No. I don’t. B-but is it okay? Won’t I bother all of you?"
Shinichi huffed at him and looked away with a redder face.
6 : Say 'Love'!
The detective’s shoulder slumped and it ached to see Shinichi like this.
“Shinichi-”
“It’s like he’s avoiding me, you know.”
Shinichi whispered suddenly and sensing the other wanted to continue, Shiho let him.
“It’s… I don’t know, but I can feel it. But, the question is why? Why does he suddenly do that? Why… why after giving me hope like that?”

Draft version here!!
After taking my heart around the WORLD (see: how I thought I had lost a whole entire month's work after the master file exploded one night) this is done at long last, and I am so so happy with how it came out kdhsgds
Technically a redraw/reinterpretation of my favorite panel in Magic Kaito Volume 2 (from "The Boy Who Bet on the Ball") which made its way to this stage after I listened to The Phoenix about 745 times--
Some more thoughts below the break, spoiler warnings for Magic Kaito 1412:
At this point in time, I don't have much to postulate about Kaito like I do Shinichi... but given they're basically two sides of the same coin, I'm sure I'll eventually have more to say about him once I'm more caught up on everything. I did finish Magic Kaito 1412 a couple of days ago but, sadly, thought it fell short except for the two seconds they use to tease me about magic lore and the apparent RIVALRY between genuine magic users and magicians-- *EXPLODES*
To its credit, I did enjoy a few things about the show-- there were some isolated scenes which tickled me, maybe a few arcs which captured my interest, and of course the implication that Supernatural Elements do indeed exist in the background of the DCMK universe-- but generally I think it's done better and far more effectively on the DC side. Kaito is, in my opinion, a character who works best when shrouded in mystery, and it's just harder to keep the audience guessing when he's the protagonist of his own show. His presence in DC feels much more impactful because it's both waaay more restrained-- in a "less-is-more" kind of way, I mean-- and is also bolstered by the relationship he has with Shinichi/Conan as the Frenemy, the Foil, etc (something which, although present, I still found to be woefully absent in Magic Kaito 1412).
Once or twice I did find the imagery quite poignant. Kaito's world is clearly meant to be taken much more lightheartedly than that of Shinichi's (it's a fun romp in general), so... perhaps ironically, the darker moments do hit a little harder when they come. Instances which come to mind are the final exchange with Chat Noir, the encounter with "Toichi" --that was 100000% a Real Ghost btw, I refuse to budge on this-- and the brief moment when he wonders out loud whether the KID charade is all there is for him in life. Respectively, they all evoke motifs of empathy, grief, and futility, the last of which is the strongest in my mind-- themes which, naturally, are barely explored in official content. Imposters hold some presence in MK also, but they hit as less thematic elements than in DC and more of a gimmick that's either played for laughs or as a segue into other themes ("Legacy," perhaps? Kaito's motives for emulating his father in both civilian and underground life certainly offers a little food for thought).
I don't really know where I was going with this Ted Talk this time, lol. I haven't thought about/been exposed to enough Kaito to confidently know what I think about him, so maybe this is a start...? He takes a very different path than Shinichi in his revenge story, which automatically makes him intriguing since Kaito is very much a sinner to Shinichi's "sainthood" (and I have expressed before that I would like to see more of Shinichi as a sinner). And I do like him even without that comparison! My thoughts on this in particular are not very fleshed-out. His story captivates me in itself, and perhaps the fact that there exists disproportionately fewer, official Kaito-centric developments is what keeps me wanting to pour thought into him... ironically, going right back to the whole "less is more" meta appeal, ahaha

hi its my first time to asked you this.. uhm...can you do some shinran prompt where Conan keeps calling Ran but Ran doesn't hear him cause she's way too focus on something then in Conan curiousity he went closer to Ran to peeked out what she's doing unbeknowingly their faces is in inch close then Conan asked her again so close to her ears that makes Ran turned her face and then they stared in each other eyes?
Hi! I did Shinichi instead of Conan! :) This kinda strayed away from the prompt but still...I hope you like it!
.
.
It isn’t well within Shinichi’s plan to buy her those trending noise-canceling wireless earbuds for her birthday. But noticing her eye them from mall glass displays and bringing up once that Sonoko has a pink pair and Sera black, and then finally, expressly requesting one from him with the promise that she’ll give him “a gift of equal value” for his birthday, he knows he’s bound to buy her that eventually.
He isn’t complaining. Nor does he care about receiving a gift in turn. He loves giving Ran stuff she loves. The last time she requested a particular gift was that Namako Otoko strap, plus a cellphone - although the phone was guiltily due to his negligence - and that was a year ago, before Conan.
What he does care about, however, is the dreaded result of buying her that kind of present.
“Ran.”
He calls, for the third time, volume progressively louder than the previous and already too loud for his standard.
From where she lays chest flat on his bed, she doesn’t flinch, doesn’t look away from her laptop. Mind him, she appears to hum even louder, head vibrantly swaying to the beat of whatever pop idol song she’s listening to.
She doesn’t notice him.
She absolutely cannot notice him.
He knows it, because Hattori has a similar pair and the dude has a megaphone of a voice yet he manages to make Shinichi talk louder than him to get his damned attention every time he has it on. Sometimes he‘d hear him and sometimes he’d still not and that makes him twice as insufferable.
The one he bought for Ran though has a button that mutes sound to hear the voice of the person talking. From the looks of it, Shinichi is certain Ran doesn’t know this feature.
Eh. Maybe she does and she’s purposely ignoring him.
Dropping his book and trudging to the side of the bed, Shinichi kneels beside her - and she still doesn’t notice - before huffing a displeased sigh and resting his chin on the soft edge.
“RAN.”
Ran jerks, lips in parted shock as she does the quickest snap of head to her left like she’s getting her neck cracked. “HUH?!”
At least he catches her attention. Flabbergasted eyes anchor on him as he stares her down with the most deadpan expression while the color of her cheeks blooms a healthy tint of pink. Maybe his own too but he’s more miffed at the moment than conscious of their proximity.
“I am asking you a question.”
“WHAT?”
“Push the button on the side, you will hear me.”
Ran scrunches her eyebrow. "I CAN’T HEAR YOU.”
He exhales thick, tempering himself because no he won’t get pissed over his own gift and her fondness for it. Adeptly, he pushes back strands of hair before cupping her left ear, settling his palm firm on the side of her face.
“You’re annoying as hell but good thing I love you.” He says before pressing the mute button. The blaring music from her earbuds stops.
“What?”
“I’m asking if you’d rather have food delivered or we eat out.”
“That’s all?”
“Yup.” He pops the ‘p’, and that accidentally refocuses Ran’s attention to his lips.
The prolonged eye contact is a little awkward, especially when he’s coddling her face and it’s quiet and her attention is fully on him and she’s drifting between his eyes and lips. Maybe he is too, but he’s more into feeling his cheeks heat up than caring where his eyes roam all over.
One second. Two seconds. Three.
“F-Food delivered. I’ll answer the question.” He unholds the earbud and music starts playing again. He returns to the desk, rereads the same line on his book, unseeing and now conscious.
“Shinichi?”
“What.”
“Love you too.”
It’s his turn to snap his head back, but Ran has already returned to her laptop and is humming more happily than seconds ago, the smile of victory visibly plastered across her blushing face. Dang it. He forgot she’s good at reading lips.

In honor of ShinRan Week: what is the absolute cruelest thing Ran could ever say to Shinichi, and would she ever actually say it?
“Ellery Queen is the best English-language detective novelist of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries!”
But she likes Shinichi too much to risk his death by apoplexia.
Actually, the first thing that crossed my mind was some variation of, “I’m leaving you,” or, “I like this other person now.” And yeah, that would make Shinichi feel pretty horrible, but at least there’s closure. He won’t get over her for years or maybe decades, but at least he can do some semblance of moving on. Would she say it? I’ve seen lots of fics where she plausibly does. (Will she in canon? Hahahahahhahhahhaha—)
Saying nothing would be rather cruel; suppose she leaves him without a word, refuses to talk to him when he inevitably tracks her down. The question of why would torment him for — again, years, decades, forever. And might she come back as abruptly as she left? He’s good at deduction, but his blind spot is Ran’s own feelings, he admitted it himself. I don’t think Ran would, though. She’s too articulate and passionate to do something so sullen and cold.
I think the worst thing Ran could say to Shinichi is, “I’m fine.” When she is clearly not fine. Brightly, smiling, with her hands clasped behind her back. Whether it’s physical or emotional pain she’s hiding, it’ll sting Shinichi right through the heart, and he might even get mad.
But what if she doesn’t just do it once or twice, but keeps on saying it? Perhaps it’s something that he knows deep down is his fault. Maybe he sees traces of tears but she vehemently denies it. He knows she’s hurting and also that she’s lying about it to his face.
Shinichi doesn’t have the fortitude to end things with Ran. (See Edogawa Conan kidnapping case and telling Eisuke his secret identity.) He’ll know at some level it’s making him miserable, that he might be making her miserable, but he’ll keep trying and failing to make her truly happy.
So yeah, the cruelest thing Ran could say to Shinichi also turns out to be a pretty cruddy scenario for Ran. Luckily for both of them, it won’t happen. He wouldn’t break up with her, but she’d bite the bullet for both of them if things came to that.
Thank you for this ask that feeds both my love of being stabbed AND my predilection for abusing Shinichi! Truly ❤️.
I’d like to open up the floor for other opinions, though! What do you think?

I wish you would write about Shrunk! Nakamori-keibu AND Shrunk! KID. Like they both had got poisoned by Apotoxin4869 during a confrontation with Snake (Nakamori-keibu was just the unlucky dude who reached the rooftop after KID first this time in this scenario and saw something he shouldn't be). Kaito got turned into a kid just like how Shinichi did, but Nakamori ended up becoming a teenager after that the two are forced to work together
I wish you would write a fic where...
(What is it with all the shrunk AU, is this the vibe I keep giving)
I think, instead of getting them poisoned at the same time, it would be on different instances.
So let’s go with Snake having links to the BO, enough to be given their accidental poison, or maybe he stole it from them at some instance, whatever.
Snake managed to corner KID, except there is too much police presence around to just shoot him and be done with it. Luckily, he got that horribly painful indetectable poison, and feed it to KID. KID was hurt beforehand, and that’s why he cannot avoid getting poisoned. Sadly, income noise/presence means Snake cannot stay to make sure the fucker stay dead this time, but he’s been told there’s 100% mortality rate and so he leaves.
KID manage to put himself out of the way before anyone can stumble across him. Once the coast is clear, he calls Jii to come and get him. And after a little breakdown, Kaito starts planning (even though Jii is asking him to rest a bit, Kaito can’t stop now, he has to do something to salvage this situation.) So after a call to his mother, “Kaito Kuroba” suddenly has to leave Japan to go live with his mother in the US.
He also refuses to let Kaito KID disappear, even though both Jii and Chikage are begging him to stop, he coulda, should have died, it was only luck that saved him. But he refused to let them win. So at first it was mostly Jii taking his place whenever he have to appear, or carefully crafted optical illusion (like using shadows and stuff so he can still look taller, etc.), and so KID stay in the game, which pisses off Snake a great deal because how did he survive death twice? But there is also a change in modus operandi, that the KID task force (and Conan and Hakuba) notices.
Hakuba investigate Kaito’s disappearance (especially once he learns he didn’t say anything beforehand to the Nakamori, and that it seems to be a decision that came from nowhere to just leave) and KID change of modus operandi. Main opinion is that Kaito died and someone else took his place as a third KID.
Nakamori investigate what could have made KID change his modus operandi, but refuses Hakuba’s theory that it’s linked to Kaito leaving. He dig through what happened on the last heist before The Change, and slowly starts finding information that was “lost”, about gunshot and blood and screams.
He get too close at some point, and got fed the APTX. Maybe Snake says something about having given some to KID, even though the thief somehow survived, the inspector shouldn’t have his luck.
(Except he does, and he survives, only younger.)
Now Kaito has gone to ground when he got shrunk, but he still keeps an eye on the Nakamoris (and generally on anyone investigating KID) which lead him to finding shrunk Nakamori.
Something interesting to explore would be Nakamori’s reaction, and how he would deal with stumbling on this investigation, considering he’s a police officer who has no knowledge of the BO beforehand. Who would he seek for help? He most likely would try to avoid his daughter, but I can imagine him seeking help from the police because (to some extent) he trusts them (and he doesn’t know the BO got their hands everywhere, even though he got some doubts considering all the information that wasn’t reported on in the KID investigation).
So I guess he would go look for some trusted officer, except they don’t believe him. Because, really, who would? This is surreal and sounds like a joke. Luckily, Kaito hear about it soon enough (or he sees him exit the police station), and friendly kidnap Nakamori, and then they plan.
I guess Conan would hear about Nakamori’s disappearance, and maybe some rumor about a teenager who came to the police station saying he’s Nakamori and got poisoned and shrunk, and from this point he would get involved in finding him and in that way find out about KID.
They team up, they take down the BO, they find an antidote, happy end.
--
Ginzo kicked a rock as he exited the station. He thought his men would be better than that, that they would at least give him the benefit of the doubt, but they only ignored him. He kicked it harder. What could he do now? Who would believe an apparent teenager with such concerns?
With all the teen detectives running around, you would think they’ll listen more to a teenager’s concern, he thought darkly.
He kicked the rock a third time, passing in front of an alleyway, when he felt an arm snake around his waist, a hand on his mouth before he even got the thought to scream. He tried kicking around, but his smaller stature made his training ineffective, and he got dragged to the alleyway without anyone noticing.
“Please calm down, Inspector Nakamori,” an old man’s voice said to his ear. It sounded familiar but he couldn’t place it. He still tried kicking around a bit more, but it proved ineffectual.
Still, how does that man knew he was Nakamori? No one believed him at the station, and he knew this wasn’t one of the officer.
He had no time to ponder as he was dragged into a car. The door locked, and he turned toward his kidnappers.
The front door opened to let the old man in, and no wonder he was familiar.
“Jii, is that you?” he hadn’t expected to see Toichi’s old assistant anytime soon.
And sitting at the front passenger sit, a kid. He looked familiar as well, and as he turned toward Ginzo and smiled, this led no doubt.
“Kaito?”

I am actually still doing ok on the writing front this year. I desperately wanted to write this Detective Conan one shot and I got it done. It is the longest one shot I have ever written (I’ve seen longer, but this is long for me).
AO3 link: https://archiveofourown.org/works/22690015
Shinichi/Ran pairing with Heiji running around being pals with Shinichi cause I love Heiji.
A Study In Scavenger Hunting
Twenty year old Shinichi Kudo could not for the life of him begin to understand what was going on. Usually mysteries were met with enthusiasm, especially since he’d regained his normal body three years ago. But when it came to his girlfriend, mysteries were rarely welcome. She’d come over for their usual date night then after he took a phone call he came back and found she’d vanished.
Well. Not vanished. She sent him a text, so he knew she was safe. And they’d talked on the phone since then, so he knew no one had taken her against her will (not that it would have been easy for most people to make Ran do something she didn’t want to do. Her karate skills had only gotten more fine tuned over the years.) But he hadn’t seen her in going on four weeks now. When she went by her parents’ place both insisted they hadn’t seen her, though he noted that Eri looked guilty. Shinichi had been a big help in getting her and Kogoro to see the light and get back together. She’d taken some pity on Shinichi and insisted that he didn’t need to worry. That Ran was just “working some things out”.
“Working things out,” he muttered to himself as he got dressed for work. He’d started going to college first, but the cops kept calling for assistance and before he knew it he had a job offer as a detective, though officially his title was ‘consultant’. He and Heiji had both been hired, and due to Shinichi agreeing to an ill advised bet, he wound up agreeing that the pair would work two years together in Tokyo and two years together in Osaka. He was still kicking himself over that one, but how was he to know that for once the battle Heiji wanted to face off in would be kendo instead of a battle of wits.
But they were on year one, so at least for now Shinichi was on his home field. Which also meant he had time to try to get out of it. Or to at least figure out different living arrangements. He and Heiji were close now, practically brothers, really (though Shinichi refused to admit this). But the pair weren’t suited to living together. They got along pretty well, but competitions between the two could be fierce and they were known to stay up most of the night trying to one up each other. Sometimes Ran and Kazuha joined them, but the girls almost always fell asleep before the guys were done.
“Ya still on about that, Kudo?” Heiji came out of the bathroom wearing only a tank top and boxers, a toothbrush in one hand that he gestured with wildly. “Just call her and ask,” he used the toothbrush to mime a phone call “'Ran! I love ya, why don'tcha tell me what’s going on?'”
Shinichi threw a pillow at him. “You’re going to be late if you don’t get more clothes on.”
“I can get dressed at the station,” he shrugged, “So long as I put some pants on, who cares? Besides, you’re tryin’ to distract from the point. And the point is to just come out and ask her.”
“Like you just came out and told Kazuha how you felt about her?”
“That was different,” Heiji sulked. “You took all the good spots. It took me ages to figure out a good enough place to tell her. And I did tell her…ya know. Eventually.”
“So Ran will tell me when she’s ready,” Shinichi shrugged. “I just have to wait.” He looked mature in the moment, but Heiji could see right through him. They both knew Shinichi was getting impatient and that he desperately wanted Ran to come clean about what was going on.
“What, you think she’s gonna dump ya?” Heiji put the toothpaste on his toothbrush. With a full mouth, he added “and wisha boat da ass her ta,” he brushed quietly for a moment and then ran into the bathroom to spit. “marry ya,” he finished.
“Idiot, who said anything about that?”
“Saw the ring box in your underwear drawer.”
“What were you doing in there?” Shinichi hissed.
“Looking for a clue,” Heiji said with a shrug.
“A clue for what, how to invade my privacy in as many ways as possible?!”
“A clue for why you were acting so funny a few weeks before Ran was. Honestly, I thought maybe you knocked her up or something. But then, she never spends the night here so I’m not sure you two have gotten there.”
“Maybe if you weren’t always here,” Shinichi said pointedly.
“Surprised it’s taken you this long to pop the question. You’ve been in love with her since what, grade school?” Shinichi didn’t answer him, so Heiji continued on. “She waited for you the whole time you were Conan and she didn’t freak on ya when she found out the truth after you changed back. So it’s weird she’s freaking out now, right? That’s why I wondered if you knocked her up, since nothing should have shaken her after the Black Organization got taken down.”
“Or it might make her more nervous,” Shinichi was mostly talking to himself so he moved from the bedroom to the living room. Heiji followed him. “Think about it, when we finally took them down…that was a rough day. We were lucky we all got out alive. Takagi-san got a broken arm and Mitsuhiko, Ayumi and Genta probably really need counseling but weren’t physically injured …but Ran found out the truth the same day we all almost died.”
The outcome had been the best they could possibly hope for, but Shinichi still felt guilty about the whole ordeal. The Black Organization had found him out and tracked him down ..to the elementary school. He and the Detective Boys had all been grabbed from the side of the road on the way home from school, he and Ai identities both having been discovered by the organization. The actual kids had been grabbed as a way to get he and Ai to comply no matter what. A gun to Ayumi’s head got a faster response from Ai than someone threatening her.
It had lead to a final showdown between the police and the organization, with Heiji leading the cops. In just a little over twenty four hours Conan Edogawa went from being a little kid to disappearing into Shinichi Kudo. And with how everything had gone down, the list of people who knew both sides were one and the same expanded from a handful to include Tagaki, Sato, Shiratori, Inspector Megure, the Detective Boys, Kogoro, Kazuha …and Ran.
“Maybe she would say no if I asked her,” Shinichi sank onto his couch and put his elbows on his knees and his face in his hands, looking miserable. “Maybe it’s just too much danger. Ran wants kids,” they’d never discussed it, but Shinichi knew Ran had always seen herself as a mother some day. “she wouldn’t want her husband, the father of her kids to be in danger all the time.”
“She knew the risks,” Heiji didn’t seem to see the big deal. Shinichi didn’t bother to pretend to be surprised. Heiji was a great detective, but he was also a 'miss the forest for the trees’ type when it came to emotions. “She agreed to date you, and that whole mess was years ago now. I bet nothing’s …hmm.” Heiji had been making his way to the front door, probably about to head out (Shinichi momentarily wondered when the guy had put pants on, but he wasn’t about to ask). But now Heiji was holding up an envelope that seemed to have been slid under the door. “Hmm. What’s this?”
“Hand it over,” Shinichi commanded. He could see his name on the envelope, and he knew that handwriting.
“What if I want to see what’s in it?”
Shinichi vaulted over the couch and snatched the letter before ripping it open.
Dear Shinichi,
I want to talk to you and get some things straight, but you’ll have to find me first. Not long ago you made a journey for a second time. Go there and await your next clue, which will be delivered by an irregular crew.
~Ran
Shinichi poked Heiji in the stomach. “All right, whats she up to?”
“You think I know?” he asked innocently.
“I get up earlier than you do,” Shinichi snorted, “ I already went this way multiple times and that letter wasn’t there. You pretended it came, but you actually dropped it from underneath your shirt before you pretended to pick it up. Which means whatever she’s doing, you’re in on it.”
“Oh, Kudo,” Heiji tsked at him, “The lady wants to play a game. You’re just gonna have ta play along with her.”
“And what about work?”
“I told them yesterday that you and I would both be out today,” Heiji gave him a thumbs up sign. “You’re all set. I’m just your guide to make sure you don’t go too far off the path.”
“So you already have the answers?”
“Actually, no,” Heiji admitted. “I helped her a little bit, but she came up with most of it and didn’t give me any clue for where we’re actually going. I’ll be seeing the clues at the same time as you. But I’m not allowed to tell ya anything.”
“Helpful,” Shinichi grumbled, taking his jacket off. If he was going to run around today he wasn’t going to do it in a full suit. The mystery aspect was intriguing and he was quite happy Ran had arranged this for him, but it was a little harder to be enthusiastic when the first clue was this obvious.
“So, where are we off to first?”
“Teitan Elementary school. She’s poking fun at my having to go there twice, and the 'irregular crew’ is the Detective Boys. Ran made a Sherlock reference,” his smile got brighter. “She’s calling them the Baker Street Irregulars. Guess she must have listened to me talk about Holmes so much some of it sunk in even if she didn’t want it to.”
They ran quickly to the elementary school and found the Detective Boys waiting for them at the playground. Ayumi and Mitsuhiko were on swings while Genta stood leaning against the swings’ frame. “Shinichi-kun!” Ayumi launched herself out of her seat and took off running into his arms. The boys followed suit. While they were saddened that “Conan” wouldn’t be by to play with them ever again, they had taken in stride that he and Shinichi were one and the same. Shinichi was now asked to babysit them from time-to-time and he took them to soccer games whenever he could. They didn’t know it yet, but he was currently working out a murder mystery party for them for Ayumi’s next birthday.
Shinichi gave each one a hug before putting them down. Part of him still expected to see Ai with them, but of course she had also returned to her adult body. But she still insisted on all of them calling her Ai, and had told the Detective Boys she really was Ai when they had asked for her true name. Ayumi grabbed his hand and yanked him down to her level, forcing him from his thoughts.
“Hi, Heiji-san!” she called over Shinichi’s shoulder before getting to business. “Your clue is ..umm… let’s see…Mitsuhiko?”
“Your own Auguste Dupin-” he started but Ayumi cut him off.
“Right! Your own Auguste Dupin is within the building, though no apes are in sight. Find her and ask for your next guiding light!”
“Dupin?” Shinichi titled his head to the side as he thought. His first though was to his father. Dupin, after all, was Sherlock’s predecessor. But that isn’t the first character he would pick for his dad, and somehow he knew Ran wouldn’t either. “Auguste Dupin was Edgar Allan Poe’s creation,” he muttered to himself, “similar to Sherlock, but came before him,” he tried to get into Ran’s mindset and let go of his own.
Who would set the framework to Ran’s mind? A builder? No, he was being too literal. Ran was smarter than that. Someone who laid the foundations for someone else, who made someone better. “A teacher?”
The kids nodded and smiled in response. “And we got one more for you!” Genta crooked his finger at Shinichi, indicating he should come closer. “What’s sticky and spotted all over?”
“I uh ….is that a joke one? Is this actually from Ran?” He felt like he’d heard a stupid joke like this sometime ago, but he couldn’t remember the answer.
“You,” Genta answered before Shinichi could process. He’d pulled a bottle of soy sauce out from under his shirt and managed to shake some of its contents on Shinichi’s formerly white shirt.
“Hey, what’s the deal?” He resisted the urge to call him a brat. The Detective Boys were all smiling up at him with the most over the top innocent looks he couldn’t take seriously. Somehow, this factored into Ran’s plans though he couldn’t figure out how. “Well, now I need to go home and change.
“You can’t!” Ayumi cried. “She said it’s important you get to the end as soon as possible. No stopping unless it’s a bathroom break.”
“All right, all right,” Shinichi agreed, trying to make sure Ayumi wouldn’t start crying. “Is Kobayashi-sensei inside?”
Ayumi nodded and wiped at her crocodile tears, forcing back the urge to smirk. She squeezed Shinichi’s hand and lead him into the school, with Mitsuhiko and Genta following closely behind. Heiji kept further back at a more leisurely pace. It was a weekend, so the school should have been closed, but apparently Ran had been calling in all sorts of favors. The group made a bee line for the classroom the Detective Boys and Conan had all once shared. Sumiko Kobayashi was at the front of the class, sitting on one of the desks chatting animatedly with Shiratori.
“Oh, Kudo-san. You’re making good time on this,” Shiratori said in approval. “Heiji-san,” Heiji gave a two fingered salute in greeting.
“Your clue is on the board. Please have a seat,” Miss Kobayashi said. Shinichi awkwardly sat in one of the desks, trying to figure out how to get his adult sized legs comfortably into the seat. “I didn’t mean there,” she said, laughing. “You can sit on a desk the way I was, just pick anything up if you knock it down.”
It was obvious that Miss Kobayashi was the one who had written the note on the board, though Shinichi figured Ran had still provided the clue.
Always a princess, my previous protector. Holding place in a different kind of court.
“Ooh, a princess,” Ayumi cooed.
“But what’s it mean?” Genta asked.
“You kids don’t already know?” Shinichi stared them down. He figured they’d probably crack if he gave them a stern enough look, but all three shrugged.
“She didn’t tell us the answers or what happens at the end,” Mitsuhiko admitted.
“Ok,” Shinichi decided not to press it. The group were usually bad liars, but if they were especially enticed by something they could all manipulate. “Well, we’ll see you guys later.”
“Where are we headed to now, Kudo?”
“The mall, to see one of my least favorite people.”
The mall was crowded, of course, but Sonoko was easily spotted in the middle, her arms crossed and looking annoyed. “Took you long enough, Detective Geek,” she said by way of greeting. Shinichi figured he was probably still making good time but without knowing the end game it was impossible to know for sure.
As he’d explained on the way to Heiji, Sonoko had been the one to defend Ran from bullies before Shinichi came into her life. And given her rich family, princess was only a slight exaggeration.
“So, what’s the next clue?”
“You’re not getting it.”
“What?!” Shinichi’s eyebrow twitched.
“You’re not getting it looking like that,” she pointed at the stain on his shirt.
“The kids did this to me, you think I left the house like this?” he felt a headache coming on. Sonoko had that effect on him sometimes. He didn’t hate her, but it wasn’t like he’d ever choose to spend time with her.
“At any rate, we’re getting you a new set of clothes and then I will give you the hint.”
“Don’t I just need a new shirt?”
But instead of answering him, Sonoko took off forcing Shinichi and Heiji to follow after her through the crowds until they came to an expensive boutique. Sonoko was being handed a package from one of the workers when the guys caught up to her. She thanked the worker and then shoved the clothes into Shinichi’s arms. “Go change. This one’s on me because I love Ran and you will not be seeing her dressed like that. Not today, anyway.”
Shinichi found a dressing room and swapped out his clothes. He emerged shortly wearing a nice, deep blue tuxedo.
“There. Cleaned up about as well as we can expect you to,” Sonoko said approvingly, grabbing his earlier clothes from him and throwing them in the garbage.
“Hey, I still need those!”
“No you don’t,” she insisted, “and you’re going to be late. You want your clue or not?”
He was about to protest, but noticed Heiji fishing the clothes out of the trash behind her. “Fine. Clue, please.”
“Well, for a great detective like myself, this clue would be too easy, but we’ll see how long it takes you to crack,” Sonoko gave a haughty laugh and Shinichi cringed. She was not on the list of people who knew about his time as Conan, and he didn’t want her to be. But he really wanted to let her know that all of her great solves had been him. Especially right now. “Anyway, the clue is:
Back to where you would have begun from,
Back into your den of friendly wolves
Not surprised to see you come,
That pair will give you the goods”
“Why do some of these rhyme?” Heiji wondered aloud. “And wolves/goods? Bad writing,”
Shinichi ignored him and focused on the words. “After all that trouble of you getting us an off day, and now we have to go to the precinct anyway.”
“Why’s that?” Sonoko asked, genuinely interested. “Ran said it was important that none of us know the answers.”
“Because of 'okami’, a not so nice slang term for police,” Shinichi explained. “usually spelled to mean 'one who is above’, but otherwise..”
“Wolves,” Sonoko and Heiji answered in unison.
“Ok, but who’s the pair?”
“The only pair of cops we know that’s dating each other and who knows about Conan,” Shinichi explained, waving for Heiji to follow him.
“What about Conan? He went back to America, dummy!’ Sonoko called after him. Neither Shinichi nor Heiji answered her.
What is Ran trying to lead me to? Shinichi wondered as he jogged along, a little annoyed by Heiji keeping pace next to him. They both raced into the police station, looking around for Takagi and Sato. The pair waved them over.
“Ah, you made it to us already. Great job!” Takagi said encouragingly.
“Though we wouldn’t expect any less of our little Conan-kun,” Sato ruffled Shinichi’s hair affectionately. Sometimes she slipped and called him Conan, but oftentimes it was fairly obvious that it was her intention. This was one of those times.
“Thanks, but could I get the next clue, please? I don’t know what time Ran is hoping to see me by. And she …I haven’t seen her in a few weeks.” He would not have admitted this to most people, but Takagi and Sato reminded him of himself and Ran so much that it made it easier for him to tell them his girl troubles. And they told him theirs in return. They were currently trying to get everything together to save up enough money that they could get married and Takagi could be a stay-at-home dad when they were ready to have children.
“Ok, then,” Sato suddenly stood at attention, “But while your clue was to lead you to us, we don’t have your next clue.”
“Who does, then?!”
“That would be me,” Inspector Megure patted him on the shoulder. He’d somehow snuck up behind him, causing Shinichi to jump. “You all right, there? You’re not usually so jumpy.”
“Sorry. Just too focused on this thing, I guess.”
“I understand,” Megure patted his shoulder before removing his hand. “Your clue is:
I craft something better,
but still stand above,
you can’t out reason me
but I give you my love
Even Holmes needs a home
And that’s all she wrote. Do you need me to write it for you?”
“No need, Inspector. I’ve got it.”
“She really needs to decide if she wants them to rhyme or not. These are all over the place,” Heiji complained.
“You don’t have to come with me,” Shinichi pointed out. “You could stay here and get some work done. I’m pretty sure you’re behind on your paper work.”
Heiji shushed him and gave a nervous glance at Inspector Megure. “He’s joking, he’s joking!”
“Hmm. Maybe I should just check on–” Megure started, but Heiji cut him off.
“Kudo, why don’t you explain what this clue meant? I bet everyone would love to hear, right? Right?” He elbowed Takagi, who nodded enthusiastically. Apparently he was pretty caught up in the whole thing, because he looked excited.
“She’s telling me to go to my parents’ old house and that my father will be there. Because, at least for now…he’s the Mycroft to my Holmes.”
“I didn’t know she knew this much about Sherlock Holmes,” Heiji pondered, “Thought she kept telling you to shut up about him.”
“I guess…I guess she wanted to make this special for me,” Shinichi admitted, considering something. If she was mad, if she was going to say no when he got ready to propose, why would she go through all of this? He didn’t know what was waiting at the end, other than Ran, but he would run like hell and through hell to get to her.
“Well, that’s my exit.”
“What do you mean? Are you actually going to stay and work?”
“Shuddup about that,” Heiji hissed at him. “Ran just said to stay with you until you got the clue to go see your folks. She said once you were there it should be all on you. I got somewhere I gotta be. See you later, Kudo.” he punched him in the arm and took off. Shinichi acknowledged his departure and waved his goodbyes to his fellow officers before making his way back to his old house.
His parents had offered it to him originally, and he planned to take them up on it …someday. For now he had wanted to try making it on his own. Heiji moving in hadn’t been a part of that plan, but it was probably for the best. The lights weren’t on inside, so it appeared that no one was home.
He knocked, but no one answered so he pushed the door open. “Hello?”
He was met with silence. He walked in, suddenly wary. Things going wrong seemed to be the rule of his life rather than the exception and part of him felt like he was going to walk into yet another murder mystery. But instead, all that happened was his mother pouncing on him from the darkness.
“I missed you!”
There was the sound of an irritated snort, and Shinichi blinked hard as someone flicked on a light. He had started to adjust to the darkness and the sudden change had his eyesight go all screwy for a moment. It wasn’t just his parents.
Eri and Kogoro were also standing there. And Kogoro looked irritated. He often glared at Shinichi before the teenager had become Conan. Now that he was back to normal the glares had gotten more intense, especially as Kogoro now knew it had been a mentally teenage boy seeing his daughter naked during bath times.
“Hello,” he greeted them awkwardly.
His dad squeezed his shoulder.
“Kogoro, say something nice,” Eri urged him.
“I will only say this once,” Kogoro’s arms were crossed so tightly Shinichi wondered if it was possible for it to cut off circulation. “For now, you make my daughter happy and that is the only reason I will allow this. If you ever make her unhappy…you will be dealing with her.”
“With her?” Shinichi raised an eyebrow inquisitively.
“You know damn well that girl can take care of herself. If you ever do anything to hurt her, I won’t have to come after you. I’ll just help her hide the body.”
“Understood, sir,” Shinichi agreed awkwardly. He coughed and then straightened up. “But I would never hurt her. …I wouldn’t try to, I mean. I love Ran a lot. Actually, I want to…I’d like to…”
“Don’t say it. I know what you’re going to say and I don’t want to hear it. It’s between you and her.” Kogoro wasn’t making eye contact and now he looked embarrassed. “I will accept whatever Ran says on it. And that’s as good as you’ll get from me.”
Eri patted him approvingly on the arm. “I have to say I agree with my husband. It’s for Ran to decide.”
“Dad, I believe you have the clue?”
“I do indeed. I offered to make it harder for her, but she wouldn’t let me,” Yusaku looked offended at the idea. “So here we are:
sakura”
“…that’s the whole thing?” Yukiko asked, looking irritated. “You probably forgot some of it, dear.”
“No, that’s it. Shinichi knows what it means.”
“What makes you so sure?”
“Because he already left,” Eri pointed out. “Look, he didn’t even close the door after himself.”
“I can’t believe I’ve agreed to help with this,” Kogoro muttered.
“What, you don’t approve of him?” Eri looked amused. “I agree, marrying a detective is always trouble.”
Kogoro muttered something under his breath, but Eri ignored him. “Should we get going, then? His next stop is to her, right?”
“I don’t know,” Yukiko admitted, “She didn’t tell me the clues or the route. Just a general idea of what’s going to happen.”
“It’s the last clue,” Yusako said confidently. “And I think we all know what’s going to happen,” He pulled his wife close to him. “And I think it’s about time.”
His first thought was that Ran would be inside the old preschool, but he found her outside sitting on a bench apparently waiting for him.
“Sakura. For the sakura classroom where we first met,” he said appreciatively. “Solving the clues required knowing Holmes, Dupin and about our lives together so far.” he sat down beside her on the bench. She wore a red dress, and was staring intently at the paper scraps on her lap. Shinichi looked closer and realized they were like the paper badges she had made them in preschool. Wordlessly, she handed them over to him.
The first one had her name on one side. On the other side, what was written was:
Time to play a dirty trick,
Turn about is fair game
Hope I’m not being too slick
So ask about my name
“Your name?” He asked aloud, looking at the other badge. His name was on one side. The other side read
My answer is yes.
“Answer?” he pondered it over, going through the events of today. Starting with the fact that Heiji had brought up the ring box in Shinichi’s underwear drawer. “You mean….Ran?” She finally looked up at him, a gentle smile on her face. “You knew I was going to ask?”
She nodded. “I wasn’t trying to snoop. Sonoko told me I should leave some stuff at your place so I could finally spend a night with you…something about it being easier, I don’t know,” She blushed bright red, “But when I opened your drawer to put some clothes in I found the box and I knew what it was without looking,” she pulled her purse out from under her the bench and fished the ring box out. “I put an empty box back because I figured you wouldn’t look at the ring until you were ready. And I wanted to surprise you with something you’d like. I’m sorry, I know the clues weren’t very elaborate and-” she was cut off by him pressing his lips to hers. He tried to pour all the emotions he could into that kiss. How much he loved her, cared about her …wanted her. How much he appreciated that she would do so much for him. He pulled away only after he felt satisfied he had conveyed exactly how he felt through that kiss.
“You did so much for me, Ran. Thank you,” he grabbed the ring box out of her lap and opened it before sliding the ring on her finger. Diamonds and rubies blended together, since red was both of their favorite color. “But why did you not want to see me the last few weeks?”
“It took a while to put everything together, and when I decided to have a clue to lead to your dad I had to wait for them to come back to Japan from the states. They agreed to it right away, but had some things to wrap up before they could come. Originally Ai and Professor Agasa were going to help, too, but they said they wanted to help with something else.”
“Something else?”
“I don’t know,” she shrugged. “We’re supposed to go to an address they gave me after we’re done here.”
Somehow I think I know what they’re up to, Shinichi thought crossly. Right now he wanted Ran to himself, but he knew what was coming next. He pushed himself up and pulled her up with him.
“But why did you have the kids spill soy sauce on me?”
“So sauce? I didn’t ask them to spill anything on you.”
So that was Sonoko’s idea alone, huh? Figures, he thought.
“Where do you think we’re going?” She asked, handing him the address Ai had given her.
“I don’t know about the where, but I bet I know what will happen when we get there.”
“What’s that?”
“An engagement party!” Ayumi, Masumi and Sonoko shouted in unison as Ran and Shinichi walked through the door. The address had been to a hotel, where a helpful front desk person had ushered them into a large ballroom where all their friends and family were waiting.
“Let me see that ring!” Kazuha said excitedly, pulling Ran’s hand towards her. “ooh, nice!”
“Kudo,” Heiji grabbed him by the collar. “That’s not fair, now I’ve gotta do better for when I ask her,” he kept his voice low so Kazuha wouldn’t hear.
“Have you considered not one-upping me?” Shinichi asked gruffly, but Heiji ignored him.
“Let’s see…can’t ask too soon or it looks like I’m stealing your thunder. Ugh, I don’t wanna spend this much money.”
Shinichi rolled his eyes and left his friend to his muttering. He linked his arm back in with Ran’s. “Did everyone know I was going to propose?”
“Yes,” All three Detective Boys chorused at him.
“It was really easy to figure it out,” Mitsuhiko started. “First, you started to get all quiet and contemplative around her.”
“Then, one day, you stopped looking the same. You looked determined!” Ayumi added. “And then-”
“And then the three of us saw you in the jewelry store,” Genta explained.
Well, that explained it. Those three had seen him, gotten over excited and blabbed at some point. “Do you three want to be in the wedding?” Ran asked them. They all nodded their agreement.
“And what about me?” Ai poked Shinichi in the back and both he and Ran turned to face her.
“Well, I don’t think you’d want to be a flower girl, but you could be a bridesmaid if you wanted!” Ran grabbed Ai’s hands and squeezed.
“You’re too pure and you’re too good for him,” Ai chuckled.
“Gee, thanks.”
“But maybe I’ll take you up on that. At the least, I would like an invitation.”
“Did you guys invite everyone we know here?” Shinichi looked around the party and made mental notes of each person he saw. Some were from old cases he’d solved, some were his high school friends, there were loads of cops running around and of course the Detective Boys were weaving in and out of the crowd. “I half expect to see Kaito Kid pop out of somewhere.”
“Oh, he was here earlier,” Professor Agasa explained, apparently summoned out of thin air.
“What?!”
“He left a gift on the table,” he gestured in that direction.
“Wait…Professor,” Shinichi cottoned on quickly. “What’s your brother’s name again?”
“Brother? I don’t have a brother.”
“So why are there two of you here?”
Agasa took off running, and Shinichi decided not to run after him. The real Professor Agasa was engrossed in a conversation with Shinichi’s mother. And the fake …well, if Kaito Kid was kind enough to bring him an engagement present, he supposed he could let him go this time. Especially since he had more important matters to attend to right now.
“Was that-”
“Yep.”
“Do you need to-”
Shinichi put a hand on each of Ran’s arms and squeezed gently, making sure she was looking him in the eyes. “I’m not running off and leaving you ever again. There’ll be another time to catch Kaito Kid. Right now…right now I just want to be with you.”

Detective Conan & Magic Kaito Characters: Kaito/Shinichi & Heiji Words: 1700 ish Required Fic: Tabula Rasa Extra: (1) (2) (3) (4)
“So... is it safe for me to say I’m your best neighbour too?”
“Yes, I will. Okay— I promise I’m gonna do it now.” Kaito closed the kitchen tap and clamped his phone in between his cheek and shoulder before heaving the filled watering-can out of the basin.
“Thank you, Kaito-botchama,” Jii said on the other line, but Kaito recognised more exasperation than satisfaction in Jii’s tone.
“I’mma hang up now, see you later.”
Cancelling the call, Kaito carried the watering-can in one hand and stumbled out to his backyard, and with his other hand, he went to his clock app and set three alarms.
Well, Kaito really couldn’t blame Jii for his worries and reminders these days, especially after Kaito recently got so distracted with his own things and nearly missed the hour of his heist; and Jii was almost desperate enough to act as Kaitou Kid then.
And this didn’t just happen once, but twice.
Standing in his backyard, Kaito glanced over to Shinichi’s house.
There were indeed loads of distractions lately.
Kaito ambled over his rose plantations and began watering them, as what he normally did.
“Wow, you have plants.”
Kaito blinked, glancing towards the fence that cut between his and Shinichi’s house.
Rather than the owner of the backyard, Kaito found the other dark-skinned detective — Hattori Heiji — the man that wasn’t easy to forget, given his reputation and the incident that nearly scarred Kaito for life.
Hattori was looking around Shinichi’s backyard in amazement, as if it was the first time he’d ever seen a patch of grass with two pots of plants... Or maybe it was the first time he’d seen Shinichi’s backyard, and knowing that Shinichi was plant-stupid in many sense, the two potted plants must be as impressive as running a country.
And speaking of first time, this was also the first time Kaito saw Shinichi ever had any visitor, well, save for Mouri Ran, the only unexpected and uninvited one.
All of the sudden, Hattori turned, spotting Kaito from where he was.
“Eh, your neighbour’s there too.” Hattori gave a wave. “Hello!”
Right there and then, Shinichi stepped out of his backyard door, his face looking all frozen and awkward.
This could be fun.
Kaito grinned and waved back; but of course this wouldn’t be enough to consider fun. Putting the watering-can down, he walked towards the fence, and with every step closer, Shinichi looked more and more disgruntled...
Eventually, Shinichi pinched the bridge of his nose, looking absolutely done with Kaito, or Hattori, or basically the entire situation.
“Nice to meet ya,” Hattori said as he put a hand over his chest. “I’m Kudo’s best friend and greatest rival.”
“And his name is also Hattori Heiji,” Shinichi mumbled before gesturing weakly over Kaito’s face. “And he’s my neighbour, Kuroba Kaito,” he said to Hattori.
Best friend and greatest rival... Kaito propped an arm over the fence. “Is it safe for me to say that I’m your best neighbour too?”
Shinichi couldn’t look any more resigned than this. He turned away, ignoring Kaito and attempted to tug Hattori out of his backyard. “Ok, anyway—”
“Wait a minute.” Hattori’s eyes narrowed at Kaito suspiciously, and Kaito felt a shiver ran down his spine. “Why does it look so familiar?” Hattori added.
Kaito blinked, barely holding back the urge to touch his face, and it took a much greater effort to stop himself from giving a nervous swallow too.
The fun sure lasted shorter than Kaito expected.
But it wasn't just Kaito that was stumped; Shinichi’s eyes looked like they were going to fall out any moment.
“What?” Shinichi spat.
Hattori scratched his chin, and he looked like a curious monkey when he did. “I’ve seen it before…”
Shinichi stepped a little closer to the fence, as if trying to block Hattori’s view of Kaito. “What are you talking about—”
“That shirt, ya.” Hattori pointed to Kaito’s chest. “I’ve seen you worn it before.”
Kaito looked down.
Crap. He certainly played himself this time; he hadn’t realized he was wearing Shinichi’s shirt today, the one Shinichi changed him out on the night he bled a mess out of his Kid’s clothes.
He nervously glanced up, coincidentally meeting Shinichi’s eyes before turning to Hattori, who still had the same squinty look on his face.
“Uh,” Shinichi began. “Yes, what a coincidence that my neighbour has the same shirt as me.”
This was the stupidest thing Kaito ever heard, but he doubt he could complain about the excuse when he didn’t have anything better to say. He tried to add a laugh, hoping it was enough to ease the situation.
But then again, Hattori wasn’t named the Detective of the West for nothing. “Right—”
“Anyway, there’s nothing in my backyard besides the two plants, so let’s head back in,” Shinichi said. Hattori was obviously not listening as he was still scrutinising Kaito and the shirt, but he didn’t have the opportunity to comment anything else as Shinichi successfully dragged him back into his house.
The backyard door closed.
A cooing sound made Kaito turned as he stared at his two doves—Touma and Curry—perched one the other end of the fence.
Kaito scorned. “You two... enjoying the show?”
Curry cooed.
Shaking his head, Kaito headed back to his watering-can.
——
After Kaito finished watering his plants, he walked out of his house, played with his own mailbox latch for a bit before heading to Shinichi’s one.
No bird poop stain.
No reason for Kaito to be here then.
But that wasn’t going to stop him from doing what he wanted. Kaito leaned against Shinichi’s mailbox, fingers drumming across the top. Shinichi’s car was still parked at the usual spot, but Kaito was sure he had heard Shinichi’s front door opened and closed beforehand. He stared down at the empty street, the only path Shinichi could take to go to the train station, or anywhere else; Kaito’s house was on the end of the block anyway—
And Kaito was right, as he spotted Shinichi’s returning with both of his hands tugged deep inside his pockets. Hattori was nowhere in sight.
Kaito placed his elbow on the mailbox and rested his chin against his palm. As Shinichi got much closer, and clearly already spotting him from the distance, Kaito spoke, “You haven’t answered my question.”
Shinichi looked confused, but he expressed that with a frown. “I don’t remember any question,” he replied, stopping his tracks before Kaito.
“So...” Kaito grinned. “Is it safe for me to say that I’m your best neighbour too?”
Shinichi rolled his eyes. “What do you think?”
“Yes?”
Kaito expected Shinichi to not reply, but he didn’t expect Shinichi to return to his house so soon when their conversation barely started. Kaito stared at Shinichi’s back and observed the slump on his shoulders, which Kaito didn’t notice earlier in the backyard when Shinichi was mostly tensed the entire time.
He wondered what Hattori was here for, and what they had talked about in the house. And if... it had anything to do with Mouri Ran.
Then, to Kaito’s surprise, Shinichi suddenly stopped and turned, looking at Kaito over his shoulder.
“What?” Shinichi muttered.
Does he have eyes on his back? “Nothing.” Kaito said.
Kaito knew what it was like to have his problems meddled with when he didn’t want it to be, and Kaito wasn’t going to be that hypocrite. Like what Shinichi said a long, long time ago, if he wanted the answers, he should wait when the time was right, or let the answer eventually come to him.
And if Shinichi didn’t want to talk, or do anything about it at the moment, there was no point for Kaito to force anything.
And maybe he didn’t have the rights to do it too.
Having nothing else to say, Kaito dusted his hands and returned to his own home.
“Wait.”
Kaito stopped.
“Uh.” Shinichi glanced at his mailbox.
“My doves didn’t shit on it this time,” Kaito said, which was true, yet deep down somewhere in his gut, he somehow wished they did.
“Yes, I can see that,” Shinichi answered back.
Kaito tilted his head. Shinichi sounded almost annoyed, but Kaito couldn’t pinpoint the main reason for it, just like the cause for the slump in his shoulder too. Kaito stayed silent and waited for Shinichi to continue.
“When are you planning to return my shirt?”
Huh. It’s for this? Kaito tugged onto the shirt, wondering. “Do you want me to take it off now?”
“Don’t.” Shinichi looked even more annoyed, but Kaito was much familiar and better with this annoyance; the one that seemed only Kaito was capable of making Shinichi feel.
Kaito grinned.
“Just give it back to me next time,” Shinichi added.
“Ok.” That is, if Kaito remembered and not wear it every time after he finished washing it. “Is there anything else?”
“No. I guess not.” Shinichi was about to turn again. “Bye.”
“Bye.”
“...Wait.”
Oh God, even Hakuba wasn’t this fickle-minded with his words, and that was one hell of a comparison that Shinichi was forcing Kaito to make. “What now?” he said as he swung his arms up in the air.
“Do you... I mean, are you free?”
“Certainly not”, Kaito was about to say, but he held back his tongue and tried to ignore Jii’s reminder and chiding words echoing in his head. Rather than a yes or no, he said, “Why?”
“By any chance are you cooking later, like fried rice?” Shinichi looked awkward, and Kaito almost saw some resemblance of that awkwardness he saw in Mouri Ran that day. “Can I pay for you to cook an extra plate for me?”
Pay? Kaito wanted to shake his head, to mock, and maybe to laugh, but he considered himself reaping more benefits from the act of cooking that meal, more than what Shinichi could ever pay with him in money.
“I can do it for free,” Kaito said, and he found his cheeks aching from the smile that spread across his cheeks. “But in exchange, you have to answer my question: Is it safe to say that I’m your best—“
“Yes,” Shinichi interrupted with a sigh, but his gaze looked a little amused at the same time. “Yes you are.”

Fanged (2/4)
Detective Conan: Hattori Heiji, Kudo Shinichi Blurb: It wasn’t quite how Heiji had imagined their first meeting would go. But when you’re setting out to find your missing rival, things hardly can go as you expect them. Especially when the supernatural gets involved. Fic Type: Supernatural Overall Fic Warnings: Blood, Injuries, Fighting, Death Talk, Murder Case Talk
To Catch Up: Chapter 1
Heiji paced back and forth in the hollow, ignoring his aching back as he glanced every other step to the unconscious Kudo.
He’d bound the detective’s hands together behind his back with his belt, the silver buckle pressed firmly against Kudo’s wrists while he’d tied his ankles together with the laces off his shoes, the silver aglets on the end tucked against the skin to keep him from breaking free.
Hopefully.
It was hardly the proper gear needed to keep a vampire contained, but it wasn’t like he’d been expecting to encounter one out here in the middle of nowhere. Vampires usually preferred to congregate in cities where they could have easy access to multiple sources of blood.
Plus...it wasn’t like Heiji had ever needed to contain a vampire before.
You couldn’t talk to them. Couldn’t reason with them, though he had tried once or twice. They were nothing more than blood minded blood suckers that needed to be killed and that was that.
Heiji rubbed a hand against his brow, adjusting the tilt of his cap as he glanced again to Kudo.
Supposedly silver would weaken a vampire like it weakened werewolves and other were-creatures, so he had a chance that when he woke up the detective wouldn’t be able to immediately break out of his bonds... but then again...Kudo wasn’t exactly...well normal.
Kudo was a vampire. The fangs and the eyes proved that much. And yet...he wasn’t a vampire. He breathed, he had a pulse, he’d responded to his name….was the detective’s famous mind still intact behind those blood red eyes or was this just the last signs of the human that he had been?
Heiji turned on his heel, again completing another round of pacing. None of the others had brought up vampires being slow to change. He’d always been told it was a matter of hours. After all, it was crucial for a human to be turned while it was still dark, before the sun’s rays hit them. If they weren’t, well, Heiji had seen the remains of the almost turned before.
Somewhere in the process the skin became vulnerable to heat. The newly turned had to stay in the dark until their bodies had cooled and hardened to withstand the sun’s rays. Else they reacted to the heat like a matchstick dipped in gasoline.
His eyes flicked upwards to the sun. That was another inconsistency with Kudo. He hadn’t reacted at all to sunlight. He’d been sleeping right in the open when Heiji had found him.
He’d been told it took up to a year before a vampire could stay out in the sunlight without being injured, and he’d seen proof of that himself.
Kudo had only been missing for a little over a month.
It wasn’t enough time to build up this strong of a tolerance to the sun’s rays.
Of course, that was assuming that Kudo had been changed the same night he disappeared. The discoloration of the blood on his shirt could prove that possible. The wear and tear of his clothes definitely showed he’d been out here for a while, probably the entire time he’d been missing. And now that Heiji had been able to get a better look at the wound on his neck, it too showed signs of healing.
But that was yet another inconsistency with him being a vampire. It was a cut mark, most likely made by a small knife. A cut that wasn’t deep enough to sever the artery, which meant Kudo’s attacker--sire? Had intentionally wanted to turn him instead of kill him.
However, newly turned vampires would have had the double puncture mark from the fangs of their sire. It wouldn’t be as healed as Kudo’s cut as those wounds took much longer to vanish since they were the last injury received to the body before it was changed.
Heiji growled, shaking his head. The timeline of turning didn’t match up. The neck mark didn’t match up. Nothing matched up! No one could be a half vampire. It wasn’t possible. Yet he’d checked Kudo’s fangs and eyes. They were the real deal. He’d quadrupled checked his pulse. It was still there. Pulse, and Fangs. Breath and Red Eyes. What exactly was Kudo if not a vampire?
He glanced again to his rival and froze in place.
The vamp--detec--agh! Kudo’s eyes were open, the red iris focused on Heiji.
How long had he been awake watching him pace?
Heiji turned fully to him, meeting him eye to eye as he spread his palms showing he wasn’t armed. He’d purposely placed the bokken point down in the ground a couple of feet away. Not in immediate reach but available should the silver not hold Kudo in place. “Ya’re finally awake I see.” He commented when Kudo remained still.
Kudo’s eyes narrowed slightly at that, confusion flashing across his face.
Did he no longer understand Japanese? It wasn’t clear just how much of the brain still functioned when one became a vampire. Enough that you could knock one out sure, but not enough for them to be reasoned with. Probably because their cognitive abilities became little more than mush, leaving them with just their instinctive need to hunt for more blood.
“I ain’t untying ya if tha’s wha ya waiting for.” He added as Kudo remained silent and unmoving. Should he have just killed him? Not that he wanted to go back and be the one to inform the world that the Great Detective of the East was dead, but if Kudo wasn’t going to tal--
“Osakan.”
Heiji blinked. “Huh?”
Kudo’s eyes finally moved, slowly making their way down to Heiji’s feet and back up to his eyes. “Your accent.” He said, his voice hoarse, barely more than a whisper really.
Oh. OH. Heiji smirked, shaking his head. “Yah, it is. Is tha all ya can focus on though Kudo is how I talk?” Had the detective been thrown off by something as simple as that? If so, his brain would have to be closer to mush, but at least Kudo could still speak. Maybe that meant he could hold a simple conversation with his rival.
Kudo’s eyes dropped down from Heiji’s eyes, focusing on his neck, down to his chest, back up to his neck. He visibly swallowed, exposing his fangs once more as he licked his lips. “Your. Heart...is distracting.” He managed, jerking his eyes back up to meet Heiji’s.
He snorted. So his rival could manage sentences, even if he was focused on Heiji’s pumping blood. Maybe he wasn’t so mushed up in the head. “Well, I can’t really stop tha.”
Good to know that Kudo’s hearing was enhanced too. Were his other senses as heightened as a vampire’s as well?
Kudo twitched, looking down his shoulders straining as he tested the bonds. “I...know.”
Heiji stepped closer, drawing the half vampire’s attention back to him, and away from the ties that may or may not have weakened him.
If his heartbeat was distracting him with speaking, did that mean-- “So ya need ta drink blood still, Kudo?” He asked, watching as his rival’s eyes widened at Heiji’s proximity. The half-vamp even leaned back a little, legs twitching as they tried to pull apart the belt.
Wait. Leaning away?
He fought not to smirk. Now that was interesting. Why would Kudo not be trying to attack him if his blood was so distracting? A normal vampire wouldn’t have hesitated. Wouldn’t have fought against the instinct despite being bound.
Could it be that the silver causing the reaction? Or was the faint green tinge to Kudo’s skin from the lack of humans to feed upon? After all, there had been no reports of any attacks, or missing people in the area besides Kudo.
Heiji frowned. Another inconsistency. Newly turned vampires had to eat more often than their older counterparts, feasting multiple times a day if possible, their blood lust nearly insatiable.
But there were no missing people in the area. So if it wasn’t humans, what had Kudo been ---He glanced to the trees around them.
The silent trees.
Bingo!
Of course! The forest had been unnaturally silent before he found him. So his rival must have been quick enough to catch the local wildlife to drain them of their blood. Hence why the creatures were absent in this part of the woods.
He studied Kudo’s bloodstained shirt with more interest. If that was the case, then it looked like Kudo hadn’t had anything to drink in three or four days.
It was another inconsistency though. Vampires needed human blood to live. Hence why they were almost always found in cities with a ton of people around.
There’d been attempts in years past to switch vampires such a diet.
All had failed.
The vampires, even older ones, hadn’t lasted longer than a couple of weeks on such a diet. Animal blood did nothing for them. If anything it made them more feral and unpredictable.
Yet his rival was hardly acting feral.
“Yes.”
Heiji jumped at the sudden word, almost missing Kudo’s nod along with his soft confession.
Geez. Stay present Heiji! Getting distracted around a vampire was a short route to death.
But.
If his rival needed blood...
Heiji took a breath, adjusting the brim of his hat. Well Kazuha would probably kill him if she found out about this, but hey, he wasn’t afraid to take a risk here and there. “Alright.” He said simply, crouching down in front of Kudo. “Can ya sit up?”
If Kudo hadn’t had any human blood since his first change, or potentially ever, he definitely had to give his rival some credit for not fighting harder earlier. The scent of his blood from the injuries Kudo had given him had to be intoxicating. Should have been spurring him to fight harder to sink his teeth into Heiji’s throat.
Newly turned vampires could never resist fresh blood.
Yet his rival had willingly done so. He’d given up the fight. Wasn’t actively trying to escape or attack him. Inconsistencies.
Kudo took longer to respond, his attention entirely on Heiji’s chest, where Heiji could only guess he was listening to his heart pounding. It had sped up a little with his proximity to the half-vampire, adrenaline coursing through him at being so close to someone who could potentially kill him in the blink of an eye.
Oops.
Heiji snapped his fingers in front of Kudo’s face. “Yo!”
Kudo jerked his head back, baring his fangs in a silent snarl as he looked up to meet Heiji’s eyes again.
“Can ya sit up?” Heiji repeated, raising an eyebrow.
Kudo growled in response. He strained against the bonds as he used his shoulder to push himself up off the ground. He wobbled not quite balanced and Heiji instinctively reached out to steady him, holding him by the shoulders, while Kudo moved into a kneeling position.
Heiji jerked back with a curse as his rival suddenly snapped at one of his hands, only his quick reflexes saving him from encountering Kudo’s teeth. “HEY! Whatcha do tha for! Jeez Kudo, don’t bite tha hand tha is trying ta help ya.”
Kudo snarled, eyes glinting as he jerked at his bonds. “Your. Heart.” He repeated forcefully.
“Right, right. I’m distracting ya.” Heiji shrugged dismissively. Perhaps Kudo was just...smarter than the others. Waiting for a better chance to strike.
That wasn’t a pleasant thought.
He drew another steadying breath. At least the rumor about silver weakening vampires appeared to be true. His belt with its silver buckle was still holding. “How about ya listen ta my proposal first before ya attack me again okay?”
Kudo didn’t respond and Heiji exhaled, rolling up the sleeve of his shirt, drawing his rival’s attention to that. “I’m giving ya sixty seconds to drink yar fill.”
The half-vampire narrowed his eyes. “Why?” He demanded, unable to look away from Heiji’s arm, hunger growing strong in his eyes. He licked his lips white fangs gleaming as he half opened his mouth. However he didn’t strike, holding still like a police dog waiting for the command to attack.
Kudo’s logic could overwin his instincts it appeared, but only if his instincts weren’t triggered first.
Kazuha would definitely kill him if she found out. “Call it an experiment, Kudo.” He said with more calm than he felt.
This was risky. For both of them. But it wasn’t like Heiji had a dead rabbit nearby to give to him instead. His rival needed blood and maybe just maybe, human blood would give him a better cognitive edge.
Or else send him deeper into his bloodlust.
The latter seemed more likely, honestly.
Whelp.
There really was only one way to find out for sure.
Heiji really hoped it would be the former. Hunting rabbits to get Kudo back into speaking capability again would be a pain.
“Sixty seconds” he repeated. “Got tha? Try an drink longer an I knock ya out again.”
He was already planning on it actually. With Kudo’s entire attention on the blood pumping in his veins, he doubted the vampire actually heard him. Bracing himself, he held out his arm within reach of Kudo’s teeth.
He reacted instantly, sinking his fangs into Heiji’s wrist before he could blink. Heiji flinched, but surprisingly, beyond the first pinprick of the fangs piercing his skin, it didn’t hurt.
Did Kudo have some sort of anesthetic venom to keep his victims from feeling pain?
Heiji forced himself to exhale, taking slow steadying breaths as he let his hand relax, watching Kudo as the half-vampire closed his eyes as he drank, totally focused on the blood instead of trying to escape his bonds.
Heiji shook his head. Sixty seconds for the blood sucker. Why did it suddenly feel like it was going to be an eternity?

I've heard many times that the couples Shinichi-Ran and Heiji-Kazuha are the same. What do you think about it? What are their main differences? Pd: I really fan of ShinRan, and I thank you for this blog.
Hello there anon, my fellow shinran fan! And I thank YOU for your nice words and for the ask!
Now... I just have to ask. Who the hell thinks ShinRan and HeiKazu are the same? It's the first time I see it even mentioned. I would understand if it was meant in the detectives/badasslady way, or if they were referencing that maybe some of their bickering reminds them of shinichi and ran, like in that one scene of movie 3.
Other than that... I don't see the similarities when it comes to dynamics between them. Shinichi and Heiji, and Ran and Kazuha are all too different from one another.
Heiji is all passionate but becomes soft and kinda thoughtful from time to time, when I see Shinichi being more of the opposite. Just look at their confessions, Heiji's has had built-up, he's actively trying to tell her he loves her but can't for one reason or another. Shinichi's was so out of the blue, no one was expecting it, possibly not even himself. Yes, he had tried to tell her a couple of times before like in Tropical Land or in Desperate Revival, but I mean it in the sense that when it comes to the actual confession in London... No one knew he was gonna do that, it came out of a moment of desperation and strong feelings of love and frustration and fear that he was going to lose Ran after a serious fight. One would've expected Heiji to confess in the way Shinichi did (I sure did), but he's actually taking his time in planning it all out and trying to make it PERFECT (his competition with Shinichi also has to do with this, but it can also count as something in which they digress.) which is really sweet and cute. While Shinichi stood his ground and was asking Ran for an answer to his confession in Kyoto and later went on to straight up kiss her (AGAIN, a heat of the moment kinda thing), Heiji was kind of running away from Kazuha questioning him why he called her "My Kazuha", etc.
And the girls are also really different when it comes to their relationship with the guys, Ran is so sweet, so thoughtful, so patient, so caring.... But can put her foot down when she's done. She tried to prove that Conan=Shinichi facing him straight on. Telling him to his face. And she knows perfectly how to stop him from acting like a jerk. Kazuha is all about bravado and showing she's as strong as Heiji, about poking at him just as much as he does with her, fighting back and bickering with him. She demands Heiji explain himself twice when it comes to his feelings, when they got abducted, and when he called her "his Kazuha". She didn't get a proper answer, but it wasn't for lack of trying on her part.
I don't know man, I'm tired and sleepy, I don't know where I'm going with this... But my point is- They're really fucking different.

What do you think about Shinichi (and Kogoro) following Ran to that café in the latest episodes? He has done that a few times already in the past and I‘m not sure how to think about that. It is like he is kind of ... stalking her and that‘s not okay. (I love ShinRan btw so this is no hate or anything!)
Hi!!
Don’t worry, it’s okay to be critical about ships you love. In fact, we should all be critical about things we love, that’s the only way we can healthily admire and enjoy things, if you ask me!
Alright. Onto your question. You kind of sort of maybe have a point, but allow me to slightly disagree with you on this, cause who would I be if I didn’t, right? Right.
That I can recall off the top of my head (and fair warning, I have given this some serious thought), Shinichi has followed Ran twice: this one time you mention in the case pre-Kyoto, and during Eri’s introduction case. It’s been years since that Coffee Shop Murder Case, and you’ll have to admit that Shinichi has grown a lot since then.
(I’m serious. You have to admit this.)
There’s little trace of that self-absorbed, kind of selfish teenage detective we first met once upon a time. So, yes, during that time, when he still hadn’t admitted to himself what he felt for Ran, when he was kind of an idiot who really needed to grow up (I’ll never get tired of the beautiful dramatic irony of Shinichi growing up when he’s been shrunk), he followed Ran because he was jealous, curious, and still kind of immature. Especially when it came to dealing with issues of the heart.
But, again, that’s no longer the Shinichi we know. The Shinichi we know now is honest with himself, has learned to deal with and channel his emotions, has learned to trust others and leave what little selfishness he had behind. Shinichi has grown up. So I’ll admit to his toxic behavior that first time, but I won’t agree with it in this pre-Kyoto case.
Why? Because there’s an important moment between these two moments that I think we need to mention before I go on to explain my bigger proof. There’s another case in between where we already see Shinichi’s maturity. I’m referring, of course, to the case when we first meet Araide. If you remember, during that case, Shinichi (Conan) points out at the beginning that Ran has been cheerfully going places for the last couple weeks or so. But does he follow her? Does he try and figure out where she’s going by stalking her? No. My man observes from afar and wonders, curious and kind of jealous, about where she’s going. Does he fall back into his toxic masculinity shit-like behavior? Negative. My man has learned.
So we get to the pre-Kyoto case. And what happens? Shinichi points out a very similar thing (which, if I may, is also what he points out in the Coffee Shop Murder Case) about Ran being even more cheerful than usual. BUT, alas, here are two very important distinctions we must absolutely make. First of all, his first thought is calling her and asking her –which he can’t do, cause his phone is broken (and yes it’s a narrative device so that Aoyama can squeeze in a case and build up the hype, sue him). Allow me to repeat: his first immediate thought to figure out what in God’s name is up with Ran is to ask her. Like the mature, responsible, Solid Good Guy he has become.
Progress.
And numero dos: Shinichi (Conan) is not the one to suggest following Ran. Kogoro is. Kogoro is the one that has the idea, Kogoro is the one that convinces him to tag along. Shinichi kind of just gets dragged along.
No!!! you shout at me, he could’ve refused to go!!! It’s still toxic, he’s still the worst!!! I hate him!!!!!!
(Please don’t hate Shinichi Kudo. He is trying his best.)
(And also I will kick your ass. Softly.)
BUT ALRIGHT I GUESS fine, you’re right. I still think it’s a key distinction to make before we start judging Shinichi’s actions.
Two more points. One, I must point out that Shinichi is the one to tell Kogoro that they should leave. It happens once they’ve figured out what the girls are planning, fine, alright, get punctilious on me, but he’s the one that kind of goes “hey, this is actually kind of terrible and we should just go and leave them with their things”.
Again, G R O W T H.
Granted, he’s also the one that later decides to stay when Ran mentions Okita. But come on, give the guy a break, Okita is literally the non-brand version of himself. He’s allowed to be jealous.
Second point, and it’s a fundamental thing that we haven’t talked about but we absolutely must: Shinichi’s reaction when Ran confronts him and Kogoro. If you recall, she asks them what they’re doing there, and what’s Conan’s response? He flat out tells her the truth!!! Listen, it’s not only great comedy writing (especially because of Kogoro’s reaction), but it also demonstrates how Shinichi has learned that there’s no good in lying. I mean, he lies to Ran about his true identity every day, but it’s almost like he’s made it a point not to lie to her about anything else. You know how fucking healthy it is for Shinichi to straight up just admit his rather toxic behavior to Ran??? VERY FUCKING HEALTHY.
So I guess you could argue that yes, kind of, okay, it’s not the greatest thing he could’ve ever done. But he rectifies, he understands that it’s not entirely a great thing, and he’s not the one to suggest the idea, so you have to see the progress in all of this!!!
Also!!!! May I just take this moment to point out one other thing we don’t talk about but I think is highly relevant: the way Shinichi mentally goes through all the reasons why Ran could be so happy. He not only knows everything she’s done lately, which shows he cares and pays attention to her big time, he’s also able to pick out, from everything Ran has done those past couple of days, those things that could’ve put her in that mood. Meaning, he knows scarily accurately everything that makes Ran happy.
HOW BOUT THAT, HUH? Our boi paying attention and caring about what the love of his life likes or dislikes!!!!!!! Well done Shinichi I am proud!!!!

31 Days of CoAi Prompt Fill 22 of 31:
MMORPG AU
gray9: Kudo-kun, you suck at this. hohoholmes: Then you heal. gray9: I would but I need to complete the dungeon runs for this character too. hohoholmes: Then deal with it. gray9: Maybe you’d be a better healer if you stopped being so snappy. hohoholmes: I’m trying, ok?! gray9: Trying to what? You’ve been dogging those enemies around when you know your priest is under-geared and can’t kill. hohoholmes: I can kill them. gray9: Yeah, but we’ll get killed first. hohoholmes: Haibara, stop nagging! unagilove: Conan, why are you over there?! Heal! gray9: Pfft. hohoholmes: Shut up, woman! Mitch: Ayumi-chan, Conan-kun and Haibara-san are arguing again! ayu11: You guys, concentrate!!!
They finish the dungeon.
ayu11: You two always start arguing whenever we run dungeons together! When will you guys stop and play nice?l gray9: I don’t know... once the self-proclaimed genius actually gains the skills to back it up? hohoholmes: Shut up, woman! I can destroy you in a duel! gray9: Can you?
Shinichi gestures to her phone, and she looks at the screen. She sees the prompt, “hohoholmes is requesting for a duel.”
hohoholmes: Accept!
In 30 seconds, hohoholmes is down on the floor next to his healing totem.
hohoholmes: This isn’t my main! And assassin bursts hurt so of course you’d win! I’ll switch and let you taste defeat!
Haibara only needed to wait for 10 seconds before she saw the prompt, “sherlockholmes is requesting for a duel.”
In 45 seconds, sherlockholmes is down on the floor.
sherlockholmes: Pfft, assassins are overpowered on duels. gray9: Then I’ll change.
After several more matchups, all ending with Shinichi’s character dying within a minute, Ayumi finally has enough of the slaughter.
ayu11: Ai-chan, stop bullying Conan-kun already...
Shinichi winces. Haibara chuckles when she sees, and Shinichi’s face sours even more when he hears her laugh.
dandydoggo: I’m not bullying him. Mitch: Haibara-san, let him last at least a minute and a half until you kill him off... baker221b: I’m just going easy on Haibara, ok?!” dandydoggo: Yeah, yeah. baker221b: No, really, I’m going to destroy you. Accept!
Haibara declines the prompt “baker221b is requesting for a duel.”
dandydoggo: I’m getting tired of this. baker221b: Shut up and accept!
Again, Haibara declines the prompt “baker221b is requesting for a duel.”
dandydoggo: Wanna bet on it? unagilove: Ooh, that’s interesting! Mitch: I bet 30 seconds ‘til Conan-kun dies. unagilove: I bet 40! ayu11: I bet 45! baker221b: Hey, none of you are on my side! dandydoggo: ‘Cause you suck. baker221b: I’ll make you eat those words. ayu11: Ai-chan, rest a bit, then kill him in 45 seconds! dandydoggo: Hmm, but what do I get when I win? baker221b: You say that like you’re going to win. dandydoggo: Duh. What’s the score again? unagilove: What about... loser buys lunch? baker221b: After this fight, me-1, you-0. dandydoggo: Make yourself believe that. Mitch: Loser buys tickets to our movie trip next Saturday! dandydoggo: Loser does whatever the winner wants. baker221b: Deal. You’re going down, Haibara.
Haibara accepts the prompt “baker221b is requesting for a duel.”
ayu11: You can’t! Mitch: You can’t! unagilove: Huh, why? ayu11: We’ll set what the loser will do! Mitch: Yeah! ayu11: What about loser cooks lunch for everyone? unagilove: Oh, ok, that’s good! Mitch: Yeah… or loser takes over cleaning duties next camping trip!
After 15 seconds, baker221b’s health is already down to half.
ayu11: Or, loser records himself singing and sends it to the group chat! Mitch: Haha, that will be funny! unagilove: Yeah, and we can set Conan-kun’s recording as our ringtones! ayu11: It’s settled then!
25 seconds into the match, Shinichi sighs. He has been reading the chat box at the bottom of the screen, and following the kids’ conversation... which is basically telling him that nobody expects him to win anyway, so they’re throwing around things they want him to do.
Haibara has been reading the chat box too, and after seeing the settled deal, dandydoggo stops moving at the corner of the arena.
baker221b manages to combo dandydoggo twice, in the same corner, and dandydoggo dies in 40 seconds.
ayu11: Whoa??? Mitch: What??? unagilove: Conan won??? baker221b: Serves you right!!! I told you I was going to win!!! dandydoggo: I’d rather lose than have your singing recorded. ayu11: Oh, right, Conan-kun is… baker221b: Rude! Lame excuse, since I sing just fine. Mitch: Yeah, that wasn’t a good idea… dandydoggo: The world would end if I ever set it as my ringtone. unagilove: Right, we forgot he’s tone-deaf. baker221b: Hey!

As fun as it is to throw salt at Gosho I think this could be a good time to talk about some good DC cases. So, which are your top ten cases so far?
Hmmm, this took some thought–presented chronologically because I couldn’t pick preferential order XP
Billion Yen Robbery (013-016): Even disregarding its long-term impact on the plot, this case on its own had a good twist in how Akemi disguised herself and the lies she told to track down her robbery partners. I’m always a fan of people, rather than going for big heavy-duty disguises, just using little details of makeup and presentation to completely change their appearance. Ran’s big heart was evident in this case and how strongly she felt about “Masami”‘s safety after just meeting her twice, and this one also what is still one of my favourite ninja-Ran moments to date. Potential kidnapper/murderer across the street? Maybe we should call the police, or run down the stairs OR I GUESS WE COULD JUMP OUT OF A FIRST FLOOR WINDOW AND CHASE HIM ACROSS THE STREET AND DO A FLYING KICK TO DESTROY HIS CAR WINDOW AND ALSO HIS NOSE
Akemi’s death opens up a shitton of plot, and, despite how it gets slightly overused later on (not quite to “did you know Bruce Wayne’s parents got murdered” levels but definitely a biiiiit overused) it’s still one of the most genuinely tragic deaths, especially since Shinichi admitted his real name to her to try and offer her some comfort as she died. TEARS Q_Q
A Haunted Mansion Murder Case (017-019): The case that introduced the Ayumi, Mitsuhiko and Genta. I always think of this one quite fondly. It had a genuinely creepy atmosphere–the “haunted” mansion looks the right side of cliche-creepy, especially once it turns out there’s actually someone around, and honestly I can forgive the incidents of the kids wandering off alone and vanishing because they’re six, of course they’re gonna do silly shit like wander off alone in a haunted mansion. And the truth of the matter is something that’s vanishingly rare in Detective Conan, something I wish we saw more often: a crime of passion.
There’s no clever trick to the murder: the son, Akio, just loses the rag under a torrent of verbal abuse and smashes his father’s head in with a candlestick. There’s no clever trick to the cover-up, either; his mother messed with the crime scene a bit and reported it as a robbery, and given that the family’s obviously very wealthy, money probably changed hands if any investigating officer did think to suspect anything other than a robbery. All she’s thinking about is protecting her son from the consequences of his crime; all he can think about is his guilt and horror over the murder he committed. The case goes from genuinely creepy to honestly tragic. It’s a proper emotional story, and at no point do any six-year-olds have to witness a human corpse, which I’m always in favour of. And I like Genta, Mitsuhiko and Ayumi and I’m glad they were introduced shut the fuck up
The Hatamoto Family Case (020-025): This was another case with good creepy atmosphere, a solid closed circle situation, classic big fucked-up family situation but at the heart of it, Natsue and Takeshi are a genuinely sweet couple who really don’t deserve all this bullshit and you spend the case really hoping for them to be safe and things to turn out okay for them, the traumatic deaths of several close relatives aside. The murderer is pretty sad, though I feel like Gosho intended him to be more sympathetic than he actually was–he certainly could’ve done with less abuse from his grandfather and been allowed to emotionally invest in his art more, but the cousins thing aside, murdering multiple people over a girl you’ve never even approached marrying somebody else with whom she’s had an actual relationship and is in love with is… not sympathetic. But I’m also glad that the nice chef uncle came out alright too, and that all three of the sympathetic family members reappeared in later cases since they were all very likeable characters.
Moonlight Sonata (062-067): This one sticks in a lot of people’s minds, and I think it’s for the same reason that the haunted mansion case sticks in mine; atmosphere. This is another one with a good, genuinely creepy atmosphere from the immediate sense of “small town with a dark secret” we get as soon as the Mouri Detective Agency arrives on the island. Gosho was very good at building these atmospheres once upon a time, I would’ve liked to see him write a horror manga. The case is deeply tragic from start to finish, from the murders of the Asoh family, to the fact that Seiji/Narumi got the idea for the “curse” from playing a funeral song for a man who’d just had a heart attack after admitting to murdering their family, to the complex nature of Dr Asai’s grief and guilt that they felt the need to avenge their family but simultaneously called for a detective in the hopes that they’d be stopped, to their suicide at the end because they can’t live with what they felt obligated to do. There are Gosho’s usual… issues… with gender, and given the bigotry that became obvious later he probably had no clue at all what he was doing with Dr Asai’s gender, but I feel like they weren’t handled unkindly for an AMAB character living as a woman? I could be wrong and I wanna open this one up to the trans folk in the audience because I’ve never found a trans fan’s commentary on Dr Asai and how they think they were handled, but goddamn I still cry thinking of their suicide at the end and I appreciate that this was a one-off case that had a visible long-term emotional impact on Conan.
Magic Lovers’ Murder Case (192-196): As well as being an interesting murder involving some quite sympathetic characters, this is a really good case for seeing what Kaitou Kid’s like under the mask (or was like; I feel like he’s lost depth since this?) as expressed through Katsuki Doito. He came along to investigate suspicious user activity, but he joined the magic-lovers’ forum because he is a nerd for stage magic and stage magicians and enjoys nerding out about stage magic and stage magicians. He gets to unapologetically fanboy over his late father with other magicians, with is pretty goddamn cute imo. He also gets to show off knowledge and fondness for other magicians, and his knowledge of magic tricks is useful in solving the case, even though, by his own admission, he’s no detective, and it led to tragedy. We don’t really see how Kid felt about being unable to prevent that murder, since he was still being played as pretty mysterious at the time, but it was a good choice for his second appearance in DC imo since it cemented him as Not A Bad Dude. Also, Conan gets to be one of Those Shonen Protagonists by running across a burning bridge, which, y’know, is always cheesy, but also always kinda cool (the artwork was particularly effective imo)
Twilight Mansion (299-302): I genuinely enjoyed the gathering of the knock-off famous detectives and was pleasantly surprised by Hakuba’s appearance (back when I still held out hope that that kind of thing meant that Kid would get more involved in the plot). The mansion itself is actually quite gorgeously designed and rendered, especially at the end when the exterior crumbles, and again, DAT CREEPY ATMOSPHERE. I guess it’s officially plot-important now, too, which I just wanna say, I officially called nine years ago, but also I was hardly the only one calling BO involvement with Karasuma.
Most of all, in general, I just really like watching and reading things involving skilled people being very competent at what they do, so the fact that ALL of the gathered detectives (save that one dead one) figured out what was up and were able to communicate and come up with a plan without revealing themselves to the brilliant detective BEHIND the whole thing, and the execution of that plan, were all very, very good and I liked it. I might reread this one right now, actually, while I’m thinking about it, I really do enjoy it top to bottom.
Golden Apple Case (350-354): PEAK interesting backstory on the part of Vermouth and Yukiko, a reasonably interesting murder, Yukiko’s RAD driving scene, and one of my favourite Ran moments ever. The confrontation with the serial killer/Vermouth is tense as hell, and the fact that Ran reacts instinctively to save his life and just can’t bring herself to drop him and let him die, to be responsible for a death, no matter whose, is a very powerful statement on the integrity of her character. She’s just to her core, and Shinichi does steal the moment a bit by helping her pull the serial killer up and getting the really good “you might need a reason to kill, but you don’t need a reason to save a life” line, but this still feels entirely like a Ran moment for me. We find out later that this incident had a profound effect on Vermouth, too, and is possibly the entire reason she’s hiding Shinichi’s secret from the BO and explicitly the reason she doesn’t want Ran to come to harm. Shame we haven’t had much Vermouth character development in a while because this stuff was JUICY.
Two Cases Under One Moon (429-434): An ICONICALLY good Bo-fightin’ case where everybody involved is putting in Maximum Effort. Heiji puts on an extremely good show as a fake Shinichi (the boy’s an extreme drama queen and Heiji does that very well), Yukiko’s disguise skills are valuable and well-used, we finally get the revelation that Vermouth has been Dr Araide for a while AND that she’s maybe immortal (…not… that we’ve gotten ANYTHING on that since..) AND we get the VERY interesting nature of her feelings concerning Shinichi and Ran. Also, we get Ran so concerned about Ai’s wellbeing that she hides in a car boot and then jumps into gunfire in order to protect her, GOD that’s SUCH a good Ran moment. Shinichi, Jodie and Akai all also get to be very brave and very smart and very badass, and ugh really I just wanna go back to everything about Vermouth in this case and explore more of that forever. Please. Also more Jodie, whose backstory we finally got in this case after revealing that she’s not Vermouth. What is it with interesting women disappearing as soon as their backstory is out MOVING ALONG
Clash of Red and Black (595-609): This case is a cracking case. This one was long and complicated and many-layered and everybody involved was on their highest gears and it was great. Akai and Conan work as a fantastic team and Conan gets free reign to do some very good detective work for the FBI (I still believe he told Akai who he was during this case, it would make sense and undercuts how concerned I am with all of these grown adults letting a six-year-old run all around an active incident). We get a good look at the incredible power and cruelty of the Black Organization when they cause immense collateral damage just to flush the FBI out. We get the story on both Akemi and Akai’s relationship AND the Hondo family, and OH BOY THE HONDO FAMILY.
It’s also one of the most interesting Eisuke cases, imo, where not only does he do some solid investigation to find Mizunashi Rena, we get a glimpse of some real deep trauma over losing his last family member that’s driven him to be willing to attack Rena with scissors out of desperation to get answers about what happened to his father and sister. I mean, I am most definitely not advocating stabbing coma patients, but for Eisuke a lot of the trauma of your whole beloved family dying or disappearing was just implied and not explored, and then he got booted from the series immediately after things got interesting with him, so bleh. We also barely see Hidemi after this, and ?????????? because she’s a CIA agent who’s in DEEP to the BO after surviving a HORRIFYING situation where she has to proudly boast of murdering a man who was secretly her FATHER, who SACRIFICED HIS LIFE TO PROTECT HER… why are we dicking around so much with Mystery Family instead of exploring this one??? This case is kind of the last hurrah for anything interesting happening with the Hondos so I love it for that.
And I love the complicated counter-bluff involved in delivering Kir back to the Black Organization without looking like they were delivering her. Again, this was apparently in exchange for her assisting the FBI and she barely appears after this…? Nope this isn’t about salting at Gosho moving on
The Life-Threatening Broadcast of Love (804-808): I love this one solely and 300% for the part where Miwako Sato jumps out of a helicopter, shoots a noose off of her boyfriend’s neck, grabs him, wraps her coat around him to protect them and knocks both of them out of the range of a bomb blast at the last second, like the goddamn action hero that she is.
So in no particular order, those are my top ten: how about the rest of you?

I’ve been reading homestuck fic for like the last week so apparently that’s enough for my brain to do weird things and so if anyone finds it interesting, thoughts on detective conan characters if they were trolls. Yeah. I... I don’t know where this came from either, and fuck no, I am not writing a fic for it. Just take these ramblings and amuse yourself with them.
Okay, so DCMK characters as homestuck trolls.
Shinichi’d be teal-cerulean range, obviously still a detective (detecterrrorist??) who was fairly well off and gaining a bit of a reputation before he investigated some adult trolls and got slipped something questionable. And then he ended up like just past grub-molt and (maybe) with a mutation. He has low key empathy psionics that help him on cases. Strife specibus is football-kind (or. Whatever the troll equivalent of soccer would be. I dunno) Sylladex is ‘casebook’ and required writing down descriptions of things to store them and concluding out loud what the item is to retrieve it.
Ran is rust-blood. Strife specibus—fist-kind and knife-shoe-kind. She and Shinichi are circling flush for each other but are terrible at getting anywhere. She’s moirails with Sonoko. It’s a bit of a caste difference between her and Shinichi and Sonoko but they’ve never made her feel like it mattered. She can and will kick the ass of people twice her size and way up the hemosystem. No psionics, but abnormally strong for a rust-blood.
Sonoko is purple-blood, not quite tyrian fuchsia but more on the pink end than the indigo. Very willing to throw her weight around if it means helping those in her hate-friend group. Tolerates Shinichi. Ran joked once that they had pitch feelings and upset both Shinichi and Sonoko so much she was apologizing for a week. It’s platonic dislike, geeze Ran. Fell for bronze-blood Makoto and honestly despite using her blood color to her advantage at times, she couldn’t give two shits about the hemosystem. God, what even would her strife specibus be?? Handbag-kind?? I dunno. She’d probably just go at you with her claws than use a specibus really. She doesn’t do highblood rage often tho.
Heiji’s olive-blood, sword-kind. He had a pitch crush on Shinichi when he heard of his existence because, damn, rivalry!! Fuck that teal guy, olives could be sweet detecterrorists too! But then he met Shinichi and was all fuck. Pale as SHIT for him once he realized the whole Conan situation. But there’s the whole awkward thing of the current age difference so he’s trying to be cool about it but. Yeah. He sometimes gets weird looks, like, the fuck you wanting a moirail a kid for, you’re almost adult molt?? That’s not cool?? He and Kazuha have a red/pale mess going on for years and at first Kazuha’s pissed about Kudo right up until she and Heiji start moving toward more red than pale. But she sometimes still flips. Heiji’s worried he’s coming on too strong with Shinichi but Shinichi’s a dense shit. He has too much going on in his head to notice Heiji’s pale crush flashing neon lights at him.
Kazuha’s a bronze-blood, and a mess over Heiji. She alternates between bare-hand fighting and knife-kind (apparently there is some weapon use in aikido? Or at least knowing how to use a weapon once you’ve disarmed someone if you can get your hands on it). She’s really possessive of Heiji’s red quadrants because he can’t seem to decide which he wants from her for the longest time—and she can’t decide either. But yeah, more flush than not. Hates Shinichi a lot longer than she did in canon and was threatened by Ran until it was clear Ran had ZERO interest, her flush being aimed toward Shinichi and already in a moirallegiance with Sonoko. Lower end of hemospectrum and a bit indignant about it, ready to fight. Ends up friends with Ran tho, she needs more friends.
Ok, so Kid. Kaito. Blah, what even is Kaito? Like Kid is this semi-mythic figure for sweeps and no one knows who he is or his blood type. Like lowblood mythos has him as being a goldblood with psionics that help him stick it to the highbloods. Mainline propaganda paints him as a mutant to be culled on sight. Meanwhile there’s also theories that he’s in the indigo range and has a variation of chuckle-voodoos that cloud awareness or heighten susceptibility to suggestion/misdirection (allowing Kid to more easily impersonate people, even in your own quadrants, how horrifying!!) As much as I love the idea of Kid as someone with psionics, I kind of think it would be hilarious if Kaito was indigo-range. He’s hemononymous. No one knows but Aoko what his blood color is. (blah, I could make an argument for any color, someone give me a good reason for one over the other) But he has his fear of fish from a bad encounter with a sea-dweller's lusus. Poor Kaito. Vacillates between red/pitch with Aoko, and has plenty of people wanting him for either of those quadrants. Because he just gives off either red vibes, or bite me in a sexy way vibes I guess. (So many people would punch him in the face with their face??) Kaito has a solitaire modus that also has a shuffle mode. His strife specibus is prank-kind when himself, and card-kind as Kid. He also has a huuuge pitch crush on Shinichi. Which is more or less reciprocated. It was kind of idly there when he thought Conan was practically a wiggler, but he realizes he’s actually about the same age as he is and yeeeah, they flirt pitch a lot. Though Shinichi’s a bit dense on that too. Granted there’s only so many times a guy throws a heist with you in mind before you catch on. Hakuba’s freaked out by it. NO! HE IS A CHILD!!!! And sort of goes ashen for them which pisses Kaito off. All the more so because Hakuba pitch flirts with Kaito sometimes when Kaito is Kaito and just. Stop quadrant smearing black feelings in Kaito’s direction!! (Hakuba is going down with this ashen ship. He won’t put a name to it because fuck, it’d be ILLEGAL to be in quadrant with a criminal. But he wouldn’t say no to privately showing up and interrupting one of Shinichi and Kaito’s pitch moments)
Aoko’s blueblood. Could be something else, but. Yeah. She’s blue because Aoko. Strife specibus is mop-kind. She really can’t decide if she’s pitch or flush for Kaito. Because one moment he’s filling her with pity and good and the next he’s such an ASS. Yeah. Shit’s hard when you’re in the middle of your puberty cycle. She platonically hates Kid with a passion. She’s all for the law but couldn’t give a shit about the hemospectrum. Testing waters for a moirail relationship with Keiko, but sometimes has a pale crush on Saguru which baffles Kaito. Saguru’s so awkward though that she can’t help it.
Saguru’s also a blueblood, but unlike Aoko, he’s big on both letter of the law and hemospectrum. He likes to see himself as enlightened, but he’s the sort to make backhanded insults without meaning to based on blood type stereotypes. Kaito’s hemonymity is annoying as hell to him. He has SUCH a pitch crush on Kid, but he’s too rigid in his beliefs to ever consider pursuing it, so it sort of sublimates to extremely intense efforts to catch Kid that frankly unsettle Kaito. But then he meets Heiji. And bam, pitch crush. He can see how Heiji would be such a good detective! But his methods!!! Are sloppy!!! (Meanwhile Heiji’s the same way back but has no emotional awareness and is just going on rants about how Hakuba’s such an ass and how he hates him and Shinichi’s just listening to it all with complete embarrassment like, oh my god Heiji. OH MY GOD STOP TELLING ME THIS!!) Hakuba and Heiji’s pitch clicks so well that Hakuba practically sees them as an item and is already drafting hate-date ideas. Only Heiji finally gets the memo that people think he’s pitch for Hakuba and rather than putting two and two together with his own emotions goes WTF?? And breaks Hakuba’s spade. How insensitive. He made Kazuha have to flip pale to deal with that fallout. How dare? Hakuba may or may not end up having a spade fling with Kaito in a rebound attempt. Which goes about as bad as could be expected. Eventually Heiji figures his shit out though. Heiji’s bad with emotional wisdom. Hell, give him gun-kind as a specibus, but he’s good at hand to hand too.
Akako’s a rust-blood, scepter-kind strife specibus. She has psionics that make people attracted to her and manipulates the shit out of them. Kaito, by miracle of mutation or blood color, is immune. And a little annoyed at how she’s like a walking rust hemonormative stereotype with her sexy vibe. She pisses him off in a platonic way and yet she keeps trying to get him in a quadrant. Flush fails, then pitch fails, so she tries for pale and that freaks Kaito out even more than the other attempts. Stop caring!! No! (She keeps on the pale route eventually because that boy’s a disaster and needs someone watching his back. Though it’s fun to flirt with him concupiscent. )
Ai’s hmm. Not sure what Ai would be. She’s poison-kind for strife specibus, though she can use gun-kind in a pinch. The reason her poison worked to turn back the clock on her and Shinichi is a rare mutagen that they both have. Woo. Troll genetic bullshit. Has the same low-key empathy psionics Shinichi has and it lets her sense hostility directed at her. Her moirail got killed (her sister in canon?) and that kind of pushed her over the edge. She’s ruthless and will flat out cull you no mercy. As much as Heiji WANTS to be Shinichi’s moirail, she functionally is one more to him more often than not. But in her words she doesn’t do quadrants these days and so she’s not going to label anything. It’s survival, nothing else. (Shinichi doesn’t buy this. But he’s fine not labeling things)
Ayumi=>olive, Mitsuhiko => gold, Genta => bronze. All three are barely old enough to be outside of their hives without lusus care for goodness sake. They haven’t settled on strife specibi yet or even proper modus types. Since meeting Conan, they’ve taken an interest in detecterrorism. :P  The boys are having pale/flush crushes on Ayumi but she only has eyes for Conan flush, and it’s a shitshow but they’re too young for it to matter much yet.
I don’t think adults would be in here the same way. Like. Maybe as ancestors? Mentor figures? I dunno. I don’t really care to figure it out. Still this was a fun thought exercise. I think what I love about Homestuck is the quadrant fuckery the trolls brought to the table. That just lends itself to so much. The drama ^_^
