Book Club Questions

So I have a captive audience for the first vol of MDZS in December and I was wondering what kind of discussion questions you guys think would be good to have for the first book.

I was thinking of addressing the non-linear plot-line and doing a few introductory questions regarding the genre as a whole. These are older folks who very well may never have read outside of American and British Literature so while I'm not trying to handhold them in any sense of the word I can't just expect them to understand the genre and its workings without pointing them along that direction to think about those things.

I haven't the faintest clue who these people from the Chinese drama(?) are from but your posts allowed me to identify it when a grown as woman with her half grown ass kid came into my job and there were pins of them on her bag.

listen. listen it's like a sickness. i KNEW it drove people insane but then i got into it and then it drove ME insane. the author, MXTX, put some sort of drug into that book that makes people insane and i have been snorting every version of it. i cannot get enough. this is why you will now see it everywhere. you see a white bunny and a black bunny next to each other? that's wangxian. you'll SEE it now because it's everywhere. it's the ship behind that fic that broke ao3 and i get why now.

gusu lan's hottest club has EVERYTHING - an extremely intricate plot full of mysteries, the best main couple that invented Romance, some really interesting things to say about morality, two incredibly toxic and tragic polycules, the sexualization of headbands (just roll with it), tragedy literally everywhere but a happy ending at least for the main couple, some female characters that truly slay, 4 teens up to shenanigans with a friendly zombie, drunk gay bitches committing petty crimes, scenes that'll make you cry and then cry laughing, a confession scene that is literally the funniest thing i've ever read, a censored wedding in a blood pool....shit has IT ALL!!!!!!!

(it is called MDZS/Mo Dao Zu Shi and it is a serialized Chinese webnovel that has been adapted into many formats, the most famous being the live action the Untamed which is on Netflix and takes some, obviously censored, liberties with the original story but still bangs in its own right. i was told you should start by read the book, the official translation title is Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation, which is 5 volumes and I read it from my library. I think the 5th volume isn't technically out yet so I switched to the fan translation someone sent me for the end. then there's the manhua/the comic, same english title, the official english translation is coming but isn't out yet, and is mostly uncensored except the explicit scenes, which the artist posted separately on twitter lol. then there's the donghua/the animated series, translated as Founder of Diabolism, which is currently my favorite adaptation of the original, i had to 🏴‍☠️ this one. it has a spinoff chibi shorts series that is also adorable called Founder of Diabolism Q. then there's the audio drama which apparently has all kinds of extra content that i gotta listen to. anyway. 10-) Gaara from Naruto

Reason: He's the first antagonist i've ever rooted for, not for his plans but for his mental health. When i first saw his backstory i just wanted to riot bc damn, people really treated this boy like a monster since day one and then got surprised when he started acting like it, i just wanted him happy and at the least i got that at the end of the anime (No, i refuse to watch Boruto on principle)

9-) Tsukiyomi Ikuto from Shugo Chara

Reason: We all have our problematic shoujo male leads that we love. In my defense i watched Shugo Chara when i was 12 years old and it wasn't until later when i realized the age difference but even then i still have a soft spot for him in my heart. He and his sister suffered so much and i just want them happy, healthy and taken care of (he's also the reason why i'm into catboys now that i think abt it)

8-)Naruto Uzumaki from Naruto

Reason: He's my baby boy (not in a carnal way), i watched this boy grow up rooting for him to achieve his dreams, he's the first male protagonist i was emotionally invested in and ngl to this day i still read fix-it fics for his childhood because in my heart of hearts he deserves it (Still refusing to watch Boruto tho)

7-) Haruka Nanase from free! Iwatobi swim club

Reason: The reason is not as deep as the others i'm afraid, i genuinely loved Free! When it first came out, i was obsessed with Haru's character and the way he was as a person, he's extremely attractive and i want to crack him open like an egg and study his insides (he's also very shipable and i like that in a fictional man)

6-) Kageyama Tobio from Haikyuu

Reason: He's my awkward lil guy. I loved the way he developed as a character, from a temperamental, lonely volleyball genius to the type of guy that still uses the signature his upperclassman came up for him in high school as a pro player. I also really liked how we only got the reason why he was acting like he did in middle school only at the end of the end of the manga and how it made everything make sense in retrospect

5-) Hinamori Amu from Shugo Chara

Reason: Shugo Chara was my first magical girls anime and i still have a really soft spot for Amu in my heart. I know she's not the most well written deep characters around but i really like how she was an escape for me when i was younger. She was a pretty, popular, preteen girl who was an awkward mess and while i could only relate to the awkward mess, the fact that she got publicaly rejected by her crush and her taste in fashion i still watched her go because it felt good to see her do so

4-) Jason Todd from the Batman franchise

Reason: He's my babygirl (not always in a carnal way), this boy suffered so much in life, was happy for a few years, got brutally murdered, then brought back to suffer more. He's one of Dc's favorite punching bags and my dream is to see him happy, healthy and in therapy. Really hate how his own father won't avenge his death or let him do it himself, just fuck that clown already since you like him so much

3-) Wei Wuxian from Mdzs

Reason: I really do have a thing for red wearing, died but got better, on his second life but sluttier than ever characters. This boy deserves the world, he did do many morally reprehensible things in his time but it's all justified because i said so, he deserved his happy ending and my only complaint is that it didn't come sooner

2-) Shen Qingqiu from Scum Villain's self-saving system

Reason: This man is a whole ass clown, a walking contradiction, he's the reason why some people describe Scum Villain as a greek tragedy with clown music playing in the background. I've never seen someone so in-tune but detached from reality, bro doesn't even know his own emotions, on the inside he's a chronically online millenial on the outside he's the milfiest shizun in the Cang Qiong mountain sect and everyone knows it

1-) Kagome Higurashi from Inuyasha

Reason: This is my girl and i'll not take any criticism for it. She's a 15 years old middle schooler having to go back in time to fix a magical jewel to save japan and she's being so brave about it. She's an extremely kind person, does her best to see the good in everyone, even in people that attempted om her life before, she's a bit immature at times and has a temper but again, she's 15. She deserved better in general and because of that, and many more other reasons, that i fucking refuse to ever watch Yashahime, i just think it sucks she didn't even get to raise her daughter

Sorryyy, last ramblings - to your last point about tgcf's popularity: mdzs was thee most popular for a long time (wei wuxian was promoting the olympics at some point and lan wangji the forklift was building hospitals in wuhan when covid broke out) but recently tgcf has been gaining a LOT of traction online, especially with the donghua, while no new content is coming out for mdzs

Alsoooo, if u ever decide to read either of the others, i have epubs for svsss and would totally be down for a book club if u were into that. Meanwhile both live action untamed and the donghua mdzs are really good! Even if they start out a bit confusing. Svsss also has a donghua but its abandoned and initially people hate it (i dont but its an acquired taste lmao)

Ohhhhh okay i guess that explains it.... I was sure mdzs is still coming out in some form, whether it's comic or drama, but yeah if anything I'll probably stick to just novels 😁😁 I will definitely keep that in mind, could be exciting to read them together even if you're already familiar. Also, forklift.....??? 😭😭😭😭😭😭

first ship: oooh boy let me tell you a storyXDD it’s kind of irl RPF BUT (long story ahead!) -

here it is: i was ~15, and i was in a school hiking club, and we went on a 2 weeks mountain hike in two squads - older kids (last year of school) and younglings (like me, second to last year of school), supervised by our geography teacher. It was an amazing experience, we were responsible for everything but trail navigating and pace. 

And in the older squad (those kids were like only a year older than us but the gap felt insurmountable, they were Wise Adults (TM)) there were two leaders, two best friends, one tall, handsome and like aristocratic (but pretty outgoing) and the other one an inch shorter, with longer hair, always laughing, and he had The Guitar (TM) and was not afraid to use it. All the girls were either infatuated with one or the otherXD

So, those two cute guys, always tousling, sharing a tent (with three more boys, ‘cause limited tent amount, tents are f* heavy), laughing, constantly bickering with lots and lots of innuendos, ‘cause you know, teenagers))

And one evening almost at the end of the hike we were sitting around the campfire, and The Laughing One with The Guitar was singing the most heartfelt song about a breakup , which coinsidentally had a name of his friend in it, while looking straight at said friend with laughter sparkling in his eyes,

i wouldn't call it angstiest ending, it's bittersweet, but the threads that bind us is my top pick. and it also needs more readers so go read it. your hands and mine has a bit of an 'angsty' ending but only for song lan. xue yang had it coming :p 💖

excluding the two above, so far they all have a happy ending, or at least neutral??? i'd say Book Club, though, because that's the massive 'everybody lives!!' silly fixit fic

nope. i hope i didn't just jinx it. i get hate on art and through anon though! woo! (not anymore on here tho thank god)

i do and i feel like it sucks so i almost always end up fading to black LMAO my actual explicit stuff remains private... it's like too embarrassing for me. i got judged for it as an 18 year old and 10 years later haven't gotten over it. i like bondage and bdsm though and that seems to crop up in private 😏

i do on occasion! i love roleplaying them, but the only one i have out there is The Way To His Heart Is Through His Stomach (Oh God Please Don't Eat Me), which mixes mdzs and tgcf characters in a unique setting :3

i'd definitely say dialog. it makes sense, since the stuff i'm most used to doing is drawing silly comics. i also like to ping-pong emotions around and feel like i'm pretty good at that too

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

using the same words over and over and feeling like i never write Enough, like everything is always light and never in depth. i don't like making scenes too heavy with padding but i also feel like i need to find a balance

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

i'll do it only if it's a language i speak!!! this doesn't apply to peppering words like gege and stuff just for funsies. i think the best way to go about it is to just tell the audience what language they're speaking in that moment
