Everything’s fine 🙂🪡🧵
For the first prompt of Hexoween: button eyes.
I wanted to make something using that St. Lucia XXC of mine as a base, you could say it’s this year’s edition. I like this guy so much, he’s more than meets the eye.

Almost All Alone
[read it on ao3]
“Wei Ying, stop it.” Lan Zhan speaks without opening his eyes, his hands holding the covers tighter to keep Wei Ying from pulling them away again. If Wei Ying wants to go hiking first thing on their vacation, then that was one thing, but attempting to drag Lan Zhan out of bed and take him with him, just to subject him to bugs and the overbearing heat of the sun was another. Lan Zhan pulls himself into a tight ball, only for the covers to be yanked off of him again, this time leaving him bare and exposed.
He expects to see Wei Ying standing at the foot of the bed, a grin on his face and a bundle of sheets held tight in his hands, he expects laughter that will interrupt the birdsong and shine brighter than the morning sun, but when Lan Zhan finally opens his eyes, Wei Ying is nowhere to be found and the sheets are thrown carelessly to the floor.
“Wei Ying?” Lan Zhan calls his husband’s name softly and looks around the room, the door is only open a crack, and when Lan Zhan leans over the edge of the bed to look underneath it, wary of any tricks Wei Ying might be trying to play by grabbing onto his ankle, he sees nothing beyond dust bunnies and Wei Ying’s socks from the night before.
For a moment, a chill threatens to wrap around Lan Zhan’s shoulders like a shawl despite the early heat of the day, but he shakes it off just as quickly, telling himself that he’d probably kicked the blankets off himself, that he’d just gotten overwarm in an unfamiliar place. Carefully, Lan Zhan stands up and grabs the bundle of sheets to shake out the wrinkles before he spreads it over the bed, tucking the ends of the sheet under the mattress, just like his uncle had shown him to do when he was small.
Wei Ying would kick them out of place again and again, always trying to stretch out, and Lan Zhan would let him, hopelessly fond.
The floorboards of their rental creak and protest under Lan Zhan’s feet while he dresses, morning light shining in through the open curtains. The crack of wood being cleaved down the middle is the only thing that interrupts the birdsong, drawing Lan Zhan’s eyes down into the yard, his shirt still half buttoned while he watches Wei Ying.
The axe he holds swings high before he brings it down, splitting yet another log down the middle while the sun makes already tanned skin shine brighter. Lan Zhan presses his fingertips hard into the windowsill, letting his eyes track Wei Ying’s movements like a man starved.
Wei Ying doesn’t look back up at him because he doesn’t know he’s being watched, but Lan Zhan still lets himself look, one of his own hands creeping up to press against his throat. It wasn’t fair of Wei Ying to get started on this chore while Lan Zhan slept quietly upstairs, well past the alarm he’d set but Wei Ying had undoubtedly turned off when Lan Zhan wasn’t looking.
Curling his fingers against his throat, Lan Zhan watches as the axe gets stuck in the stump Wei Ying is using as a chopping block, a low noise rising in Lan Zhan’s throat while Wei Ying braces a boot against it to pull the axe free, his back muscles straining in a way that makes Lan Zhan want to bite down on them. Lan Zhan finishes buttoning his shirt quickly so he can hurry downstairs, in case Wei Ying needs his help getting the axe out of the chopping block, but the state of the kitchen stops him in his tracks.
Every cabinet door is open, their contents on full display while Lan Zhan stares hard at them. It wasn’t unlike Wei Ying to leave cabinet doors hanging open while he looked for something, but what could he have been looking for? They’d put all their groceries and cooking utensils away the night before, Wei Ying had even helped him put everything away, even if it was only under the guise of stealing snacks before dinner whenever he thought Lan Zhan wasn’t looking. By the time Lan Zhan has managed to close every cabinet, Wei Ying has wrenched the axe free, only to lose his balance and go tumbling backwards. The axe lands heavy against his chest and for a moment, Lan Zhan is locked in place, his eyes widening and his heart stopping before Wei Ying shoves it off and Lan Zhan hears him cough. The wind had been knocked out of Wei Ying’s chest, and the ground had almost fallen from underneath Lan Zhan.
Wei Ying hasn’t made any attempt at getting up by the time Lan Zhan makes his way over to him, leaving the sliding glass door open as he gathers his skirt up in one hand. “Wei Ying?” Lan Zhan calls his name softly as he kneels over his Wei Ying, hands already reaching out to press against Wei Ying’s cheeks.
“Lan Zhan!” Wei Ying’s eyes brighten and a grin spreads across his face as he looks up at Lan Zhan, his bare chest shining with sweat in the sun. His back would be filthy with dirt by the time he finally sat up, but Lan Zhan would help him brush it off before he allowed Wei Ying to come inside for breakfast. “I made your tea for you this morning, did you find it? I left it on the counter for you.” The tea has likely long since gone cold, but rather than answer him, Lan Zhan lifts Wei Ying’s head into his lap instead, his fingertips pressing against Wei Ying’s scalp as gingerly as he can to check for bumps or bleeding. They’d been lucky, Wei Ying had landed against grass that was covering more or less flat ground.
“Is Wei Ying alright?” Lan Zhan knows that he should answer Wei Ying’s question, he knows that he should tell him that he hadn’t even noticed the mug set out for him, that he’d been too involved in trying to get downstairs to watch him chop wood from the comfort of the kitchen, but the thought of it makes color rise at the tips of Lan Zhan’s ears. He’s almost grateful that he’d only taken the time to put his hair in a loose braid, if Wei Ying could see the state of his ears, he would know exactly what had happened.
Still, Lan Zhan’s hands wander and stroke down Wei Ying’s chest. The dampness of sweat should disgust him, but it only makes Lan Zhan want to lean down and taste Wei Ying’s sweat against his own lips. “Wei Ying should not have gone to such trouble.” Wei Ying’s hands reach up to cover Lan Zhan’s, his thumbs pressing against Lan Zhan’s wrists and stroking back and forth. His smile threatens to blot out the sun as he shakes his head and turns to press a kiss to one of Lan Zhan’s thighs, as if he hadn’t just fallen flat on his back.
“It’s not any trouble, Lan Zhan, I know how you like your tea.” Wei Ying’s grip on his hand tightens as he lifts Lan Zhan’s hand to his lips and kisses his knuckles, his eyes warm and impossibly deep with the light of the sun sinking into them. “Two spoonfuls of honey and a splash of milk, unless you’re drinking something herbal, and then you only want the honey.” Lan Zhan hadn’t meant the tea, but he still smiles while his Wei Ying rambles, his free hand moving to cover Wei Ying’s heart protectively.
“Mn, you are correct.” Lan Zhan finally allows himself to lean down and kiss Wei Ying softly, his braid falling over one shoulder as Wei Ying leans up into it, his hand releasing Lan Zhan’s wrist so he can hold Lan Zhan by the back of his neck. “Did you ever find what you were looking for in the cabinets?” Lan Zhan asks the question absentmindedly, speaking with his lips against Wei Ying’s mouth, the image of all the cabinet doors left standing open only a vague shape in his mind, even if he wants to be helpful.
“We left the tea on the counter, Lan Zhan, I didn’t open the cabinets.” Wei Ying finally sits up, rolling onto his hip before he comes right back to where he’d been. He leans in close to press their foreheads together, but Lan Zhan’s eyebrows furrow as he shakes his head.
“All the cabinets were open when I came downstairs, I thought Wei Ying had left them open while he was looking for something.” Now, Wei Ying’s eyebrows knit together, the smile dropping off of his face as he looks past Lan Zhan and into the house. Nothing else had been amiss, nothing inside the cabinets had been touched, but Lan Zhan still looks back with Wei Ying, his eyes moving upwards to the bedroom window he’d been looking out of like some desperate housewife just a few moments ago.
It isn’t his own behavior that makes Lan Zhan gasp, his eyes widening as he stares up, but rather, the figure of a person looking down at them, their face neutral, as if they couldn’t care less. “Wei Ying.” Lan Zhan doesn’t have to point, Wei Ying follows his eyes and then tightens his grip on Lan Zhan. Wei Ying’s eyes have darkened by the time Lan Zhan is able to look at him again. They both watch as the person steps backwards, away from the window, seemingly disappearing while Wei Ying stands up slowly and pulls Lan Zhan along with him.
“I left my phone inside, do you have yours?” Wei Ying keeps his voice quiet as he moves to stand in front of Lan Zhan, one arm reaching back to hold onto Lan Zhan, as if Wei Ying worried that something would come charging out at them. Lan Zhan doesn’t stop himself from wrapping both hands around Wei Ying’s arm.
He could probably handle whoever was in the house, they both could, together and separately, but Lan Zhan won’t deny the comfort in Wei Ying’s protectiveness, nor will he deprive himself of the chance to hold onto his husband. “I did not think it was necessary to bring it with me, I left it upstairs.”
“Besides the cabinet doors, did anything else happen while you were inside and I was out here?” Carefully, they both move closer to the house, their steps slow and quiet.
“The covers were thrown to the floor.” Lan Zhan answers honestly after a minute of silence, a thick, oily feeling coating his stomach at the thought of someone, some stranger finding him sleeping and naked and having the audacity to pull the covers off of him. He buries his face in Wei Ying’s back without thinking about it, shame threatening to cover him in a thick cloak. When they’d first gotten together, Lan Zhan had worn proper pajamas to bed every night, it was only after Wei Ying had started to share his bed without a stitch on his body that Lan Zhan gradually let himself be worn down. It had always been fine for their home in the city, no one bothered them there.
“Let me handle this, okay, Lan Zhan?” Wei Ying grabs his shirt off the deck of the railing and pulls it over his head, shaking Lan Zhan off for just a moment before he’s coming back, both of his hands framing Lan Zhan’s face. It’s almost enough to shove the cloak of shame off of Lan Zhan’s shoulders, but it still clings, even as Lan Zhan shakes his head and squeezes Wei Ying’s wrists tightly.
“I will go with you, I do not want Wei Ying to get hurt. There could be more than one.” One person had been all they’d seen, but that didn’t promise that there was only one person. It seems as if Wei Ying is going to argue for a moment, he even opens his mouth to say something, but the sound of something shattering inside the house drags both of their attention back to the open sliding door. Lan Zhan squeezes Wei Ying’s wrists tighter, a silent insistence that he won’t be left outside while Wei Ying may or may not be wandering into a group of dangerous people.
“You’ll stay behind me the whole time?” Wei Ying asks, glancing back at Lan Zhan as he allows his hands to drop away and hang in the empty space between the two of them. He’s the one who shifts Lan Zhan’s grip from his wrist to his hand, their fingers interlacing. Wei Ying’s knuckles turn white with his own grip and Lan Zhan cannot fault him for it.
“I will stay behind Wei Ying as long as I can.” It’s the only thing that Lan Zhan can promise, and he hopes that it’s enough, his eyes meeting Wei Ying’s gaze and holding it until Wei Ying finally nods his head, accepting Lan Zhan’s conditions and loosening his hold, just to tighten it again.
“It’s probably some local kids messing around.” Wei Ying’s voice is still low as they climb the steps, but there’s a quiet danger to it that shouldn’t thrill Lan Zhan as much as it does, “Kids still like to scare tourists, right?”
“Mn.” The shattered remains of a mug crunch under Wei Ying’s boot and immediately, Lan Zhan is nudged to the side by Wei Ying’s hip. Almost ice cold tea spreads out across the kitchen floor. Lan Zhan would have to mop it up later, but for now, all he can do is share a look with Wei Ying. The house has gone silent, only the humming of the refrigerator and their breathing disturbs it.
Without thinking, Lan Zhan leans forward and snatches at a long, orange-brown pine needle that’s sticking out of the collar of Wei Ying’s shirt, whether or not it makes it into the trash can beside the counter, Lan Zhan doesn’t know, he’s already being led upstairs by Wei Ying, each step creaking underneath their combined weight. It’s nothing like the night before, when Wei Ying had gathered Lan Zhan up in his arms and taken the steps two at a time, eager to have his way with him. If the stairs had creaked then, Lan Zhan hadn’t paid attention, but now he can feel every creak in the pit of his stomach. He glances back involuntarily and he’s grateful when he sees nothing and no one.
Together, they check every room upstairs and then downstairs before they separate and check again, their footsteps filling the house. There’s nothing and no one to be found and after a third sweep, Lan Zhan meets Wei Ying in the middle of the kitchen, their arms wrapping around each other’s bodies. Lan Zhan still hasn’t had the chance to clean up the mess that was supposed to be his morning tea, and now, it was too late to make Wei Ying breakfast. It would be time for lunch soon.
“I didn’t lock the front door last night, did you?” Wei Ying’s cheek is pressed against his temple, but Lan Zhan shakes his head before pressing himself into Wei Ying’s chest.
“Wei Ying did not give me the chance to.” Usually, Lan Zhan was careful, he always checked the locks before he went to bed, but he’d been turned into putty in Wei Ying’s hands last night. They’d been determined to break in their bed for the month. They’d given whoever it had been in their bedroom window the perfect chance without even realizing it. Shame tries to pounce on Lan Zhan again, but Wei Ying covers him with love instead.
“We’ll just have to be more careful then.” Wei Ying presses a kiss against Lan Zhan’s temple, his hands rubbing up and down Lan Zhan’s back, both comforting and teasing, “From now on, I’ll throw you over my shoulder and stop at the door so you can lock it before I carry you upstairs.”
Lan Zhan should scold Wei Ying for making light of the situation, but Wei Ying’s joke pulls a weight off of Lan Zhan’s heart, just like it always does. “We should not separate, either, I would hate to think of Wei Ying getting bullied by local children.” Lan Zhan means to smooth his hand over Wei Ying’s back, but he can make out the muted shapes of pine needles and other debris from Wei Ying’s fall earlier, still clinging to his skin. Lan Zhan hadn’t gotten the chance to brush them off of him, but he’d meant to. Lan Zhan keeps himself from spinning Wei Ying around and pulling his shirt up. It would only make a worse mess on the kitchen floor. The cold tea would get sticky soon, Lan Zhan would have to act quickly.
“I can make you a new cup of tea, Lan Zhan.” Wei Ying offers softly, but Lan Zhan shakes his head, stepping away from Wei Ying to drop down onto one knee, starting the process of picking up the larger chunks of what had once been a mug while still taking care of the smaller, sharper shards. He doesn’t expect Wei Ying to drop down with him to help, a roll of paper towels set down between them. The mess is cleaned up faster by four hands instead of two, until only a faint shine on the floor remains.
If they’d been in their own home, Lan Zhan might’ve wiped it away with the mop, and he’s still tempted to, but Wei Ying stops him with another long, lingering kiss that pins Lan Zhan against the counter, his hands finding purchase on Wei Ying’s chest.
“I got all sweaty and gross chopping wood so we could have a fire later, Lan Zhan.” Wei Ying says, and it sounds meaningful, but all Lan Zhan can do is blink at Wei Ying, his lips already red and swollen. He nearly asks Wei Ying what he needs, but then, Wei Ying is crowding in close again, their lips brushing while Wei Ying speaks, “Don’t you feel a little dirty after all that, Lan Zhan? I think we both need to clean up.”
Oh.
Oh.
Lan Zhan understands now, the hint finally sinking in as Lan Zhan glances at the back door and then the front, his hands still braced against Wei Ying’s chest. “Has Wei Ying checked all the doors and the windows?” Wei Ying’s hands wander lower, past Lan Zhan’s waist and down to his bottom, squeezing and distracting Lan Zhan from his train of thought thoroughly. When did Wei Ying have time to pull the curtains? How did Lan Zhan not notice?
“They’re locked and the doors are deadbolted, Lan Zhan, let me take you upstairs.”
Lan Zhan should say no, he should be more nervous, it hasn’t even been two hours since they’d seen someone watching them from their bedroom window, but whoever it was is gone now, and Wei Ying still smells like he’d been chopping wood, the scent of it mixes with his cologne and fills Lan Zhan’s lungs. It makes his eyes flutter shut for just a moment before he looks past Wei Ying’s shoulder to stare hard at the front door, the deadbolt thrown into place, just like Wei Ying had said it was.
Lan Zhan tries hard to speak, but then, Wei Ying is biting at his neck and all he can do is gasp, his hand sliding up to tangle in Wei Ying’s hair. “Wei Ying will lock the bathroom door while we shower, won’t he?” Lan Zhan allows Wei Ying to pick him up, he even wraps his legs around Wei Ying’s hips, hooking his ankles together.
Wei Ying starts towards the stairs without answering him, his arms tight around Lan Zhan’s middle, though Lan Zhan knows that Wei Ying would never drop him, even in an unfamiliar house with corners they’d yet to practice navigating around. “I’ll keep you safe, Lan Zhan, promise.” Lan Zhan’s back is the first thing to meet the bathroom door, though it gives way readily behind him, the two of them all but falling through it before Wei Ying turns them around just long enough to turn the lock. It’s not meant to be a show, but Lan Zhan still rewards him as if it was, his tongue slipping into Wei Ying’s mouth and wrapping around his tongue with practiced ease and permission that hadn’t needed a second thought to be granted.
Pressing him against the glass door of the shower, Wei Ying starts to work at the buttons on Lan Zhan’s shirt, popping them open one by one, but fumbling in his haste. Lan Zhan has a much easier time, all he has to do is drag Wei Ying’s shirt up his back and over his head, letting bits of grass and pine needles fall to the bathroom floor, though plenty still cling to Wei Ying’s back.
They undress each other quickly, Wei Ying scarcely gives him time to fold their clothes and throw them onto the counter beside them, he doesn’t even give Lan Zhan time to aim well enough to keep his own clothes out of the sink. Wei Ying hadn’t even taken a moment to turn the water on before he’d pulled Lan Zhan into the shower, instead, he stands against the cold spray, holding Lan Zhan out of it and keeping him there by kissing him until it’s warm enough for them both to stand underneath it.
Whatever sweat that had accumulated during their search, or whatever stickiness that had occurred while they were cleaning up his tea melts away under the water, just like the debris that had been pressed into Wei Ying’s skin. Those, Lan Zhan washes away personally, watching with satisfaction as they go down the drain. Once they’re gone for good, Lan Zhan is sinking down to his knees and pressing his hands against Wei Ying’s thighs, but he doesn’t touch Wei Ying’s half hard cock, not yet, not when looking up at Wei Ying is so much more tempting.
“I was upset with Wei Ying this morning.” Lan Zhan confesses softly, leaning in and pressing a kiss to the tip of Wei Ying’s cock without breaking eye contact. The tip of his tongue slips out and licks over Wei Ying’s slit before Lan Zhan can stop himself, but he’d already indulged himself so much, why stop now? Wei Ying’s skin is soft and warm underneath Lan Zhan’s palm as he strokes up his thigh and onto his belly before he scratches downward, his nails not sharp enough to inflict damage, but just sharp enough to turn Wei Ying’s beautiful tanned skin white for just a moment. “I very nearly missed watching Wei Ying chop wood because he tampered with my alarm.”
Wei Ying presses his mouth into a fine line to keep some sort of noise in, but Lan Zhan does all he can to bring it out, his lips forming a tight circle around Wei Ying’s cockhead, but refusing to sink further onto him. It isn’t fair, it’s mean, Lan Zhan knows it, but it’s not enough to stop him.
“Lan Zhan,” Wei Ying starts and whimpers, his head thudding back against the tiled wall of the shower, “Sweetheart, I thought about waking you up, I really did, but you looked like you were sleeping so well, I wanted to let you rest.” Wei Ying’s hand tangles in his hair, ruining a braid Lan Zhan couldn’t care less about, though he still manages to catch the hair tie before it can go down the drain. For a moment, Lan Zhan thinks about wrapping it around the base of Wei Ying’s dick, but decides against it. Elastic could become too tight and too uncomfortable too quickly, Lan Zhan wouldn’t resort to that, even if he was upset.
Humming, Lan Zhan takes Wei Ying’s cock further into his mouth just to feel him jolt and hear him moan. He means to take Wei Ying to the back of his throat and keep him there until he comes hard enough to double over, but Wei Ying’s hands on his shoulders make Lan Zhan stop, one hand wrapping around Wei Ying’s shaft while he looks up.
“Let me make it up to you, Lan Zhan, stand up.” For a long, long moment, Lan Zhan thinks about ignoring Wei Ying and taking him down to his base anyway, but Wei Ying stops him with one pleading look before he helps Lan Zhan stand.
“Turn around for me.” Wei Ying is no longer asking, he doesn’t even give Lan Zhan the chance to tell him that they hadn’t brought the lube with them into the shower before he spins him around and presses Lan Zhan against the tiles. Wei Ying’s cock is buried between Lan Zhan’s thighs, pressing right underneath Lan Zhan’s own cock, but Wei Ying doesn’t wrap his hand around the both of them as he reaches down, he only holds onto Lan Zhan’s cock. Wei Ying’s thumb strokes over his slit, a mimicry of what Lan Zhan had done to him earlier, but it only makes Lan Zhan sigh.
Slowly, Wei Ying’s hips start to move, using Lan Zhan’s thighs to stroke himself off, but Lan Zhan still tries to clench around him, feeling hopelessly empty as Wei Ying begins to pick up speed. It’s not enough for Wei Ying to fuck his thighs, Lan Zhan wants more, he needs more of Wei Ying, but then, with a pace opposite that of his hips, Wei Ying’s hand begins to pick up speed too, stroking Lan Zhan hard and fast just to make Lan Zhan moan.
“I was going to fuck you in front of the fireplace later, you know.” Wei Ying growls into Lan Zhan’s ear, and there’s no stopping the moan that comes tumbling out of him. “That’s why I was chopping firewood, I wanted to spread out a blanket and work you open until you were begging for my cock, and then I was going to fuck you until you couldn’t hold yourself up anymore.”
“Filthy.” Lan Zhan tries to say it, but it comes out half whimpered and stammered, his hands pressing against the tile and scrabbling for some kind of hold, but there’s none to be found. Wei Ying’s cock, hard and too hot, slips out from between his thighs and presses against the curve of Lan Zhan’s ass instead, and somehow, that’s worse, it makes Lan Zhan feel emptier to know Wei Ying is so close to where he wants him, and then to know that he can’t have him there.
“I’m still going to, Lan Zhan, I promise,” Wei Ying rambles in Lan Zhan’s ear, the arm he’d had wrapped around Lan Zhan’s middle moving upwards, to pinch and pull at one of Lan Zhan’s nipples. A whine, high pitched and desperate squeezes out of Lan Zhan’s throat in response, his cock leaking out against Wei Ying’s fist.
The head of Wei Ying’s cock presses against his entrance and for a moment, Lan Zhan thinks that Wei Ying will decide to disregard the need for lube just this once, and he almost encourages it, but Wei Ying’s cock is already slipping between his thighs again. Lan Zhan could cry with how badly he needs it, but he won’t, not yet.
The hand that had been teasing his nipple finally gives up its task, sliding up Lan Zhan’s chest and then holding him by his throat, Wei Ying’s thumb stroking over the notch in Lan Zhan’s throat with practiced ease. It’s the lightest squeeze that finally sends Lan Zhan over, and he should be mortified that it took something so simple, but Wei Ying is still whispering filth into his ear and stroking Lan Zhan through his orgasm, come making the glide easier until Lan Zhan can’t take it anymore.
“Wei Ying… Too much.” Lan Zhan leans back against Wei Ying’s chest as he gasps, and Wei Ying lets go of his cock before he pulls out from between Lan Zhan’s thighs, and that’s not what Lan Zhan meant, either. He’d meant for Wei Ying to get off too, and that’s what makes him turn around on wobbly legs, grabbing onto Wei Ying’s arm with one hand to steady himself while the other wraps around Wei Ying’s cock, stroking him before Wei Ying can tell him that he doesn’t have to.
The hand on Wei Ying’s arm turns into Lan Zhan’s arm wrapped around Wei Ying’s neck, letting Wei Ying support most of his weight while he strokes Wei Ying until he comes with a moan that echoes through the bathroom, spurts of white covering Lan Zhan’s hand and wrist until the shower washes all of it down the drain.
The water has gone lukewarm, but they linger a few moments longer, leaning against each other until one of them, Lan Zhan isn’t sure who, decides that they’d be better off sitting down, only then does Wei Ying reach backwards and turn the water off, leaving the both of them to drip dry on the bottom of the bathtub.
They would have to get out soon. Wei Ying’s hair would tangle if Lan Zhan didn’t manage to brush it before it dried, but a moment longer would be fine, Lan Zhan decides as he slides the shower door open, hoping to let some of the steam out.
A handprint, smaller than either of their own hands, in the fogged mirror makes him wish he’d kept it in, though, a chill seeping into his wet skin.
“Wei Ying,”

4. So for a future itmf: can I please, please, PLEASE get something where people are actually on wei wuxian's side? Please? I have read so many fics where wwx is blamed for EVERYTHING. Oh lwj had to mourn you. Oh you and lwj are getting married? Sorry but we're gonna be on lwj's side of the wedding party.
Read a fic recently where lsz told wwx "you're the one with the words aren't you?" And could only think to myself how unfair that is. Yes, wwx is the one who can talk more, and easier, but that shouldn't mean all communication in their relationship is on him.
Read another where wwx and lwj were getting married and literally every single junior was on lwj's side of the wedding party? And more or less said wwx wasn't good enough and had to prove that he might be one day?
Idk, sorry for the request turned rant 😂 I just keep finding fic like this and I'm TIRED and I just really need to read something that doesn't put all the weight of everything onto wwx alone and actually gives him people who genuinely care and are in his corner. Please I'm literally begging 😭🙏
try stiltonbasket's fics. as a whole, their works have wwx working through his trauma at his own pace and then living a happy life with unconditional love and support from lwj and his other loved ones through the entire process. very comforting.
most of apathyinreverie's fics very much carry this vibe
absolutely all the fics from Vrishchika. She is the best WWX writer hands down. She has the characterization perfect, and she knows WWX's value. - I would probably have others, but this is the first name I can think of.
Hauntcats also likes to surround wifi with loving support, as well as giving him his due as the genius and all round amazing human being he is

5. Hiii, lovely people! I hope y'all enjoying autumn in all its splendor if you're on the northern hemisphere (or lovely spring if you're not). 6. Hi! Are there any Wen Qing lives fics in which she reunites with Lan Sizhui? Thank you!
❤️ kick at the darkness 'til it bleeds daylight by AlfAlfAlfAlfAlf, tardigradeschool (T, 75k, WangXian, Hurt/Comfort, Everyone Lives/Nobody Dies, Eventual Happy Ending, Getting Together, Burial Mounds Settlement Days, Inspired by The Parent Trap (1998), Kid Fic, teen shenanigans, two a-yuans, Fluff and Angst)
the dead horse Series by curiositykilled (T, 63k, WIP, WangXian, Yunmeng Siblings & Wen Siblings, WQ & LWJ, Canon Divergence, JYL Lives, WQ Lives, basically everyone lives except wei wuxian, Implied/Referenced Suicide, Canonical Character Death, Grief/Mourning, Happy Ending, Family Feels, Platonic Relationships, Families of Choice, Depression, PTSD, raising a kid with your dead best friend's would-be lover, Slow burn friendship)
SIMILAR! 🧡 do not envy the roots that hold you down by eccentrick (T, 12k, WangXian, WQ & LSZ, WQ & LWJ, Found Family, Brother-Sister Relationships, Reincarnation, WQ wasn't given Meng Po's soup, Reunions, awkward cousins lwj and wq, wq is a creepy child, Grief/Mourning, Trauma, Additional Warnings In Author's Note, Rebirth, Soul-Searching, Emotional Hurt/Comfort, Guilt) a little sideways to the prompt but anon may enjoy it: in which wen qing reincarnates immediately as a lan and gains lsz as a three years older cousin
~*~
7. hello!! could you guys recommend any fics that focus on the one scene where wei wuxian drinks the wine that jin zixun is offering instead of lan wangji? preferably ones that address lan wangji's "I want this man to dominate me" expression?
~*~
8. Hi! Can you recommend some fics where Wei wuxian doesn’t have a golden core but also doesn’t starting demonic cultivation? I think itd be cool to see what his plan was if he wasn’t thrown into the burial mounds. Also I’d like to see him depend on other people more since he has no way of cultivating
Instead by apathyinreverie (T, 6k, wangxian, fix-it, darker gusu lan, manipulative elders, but in a good way?, golden core transfer fix-it of sorts, not Jiang friendly, or anyone friendly, except wangxian, cultivation world critical, fluff, sunshot, politics, courting rituals, genius WWX, no demonic cultivation, talismans, possessive LWJ, protective LWJ, WIP) according to the tags this should fit the prompt very well, but the alt plan of action still hasn't been written for now.
i really want to know (who are you) by Stratisphyre (M, 19k, WangXian, LQR & WWX, Modern AU, Modern with Magic, Golden Core Reveal, Single Dad WWX, Reasonable Authority Figure LQR, Allusions to violence and murder, Hospitalization) wei ying doesnt have a golden core and does not turn to demonic cultivation, hwoever its modern
~*~
9. Hii! For the next ITMF post can you recommend any fics where LWJ or WWX get turned into their kid selves and the other takes care of them?Just a really cute fic pls
grow by cafecliche (T, 14k, WangXian, Age Regression/De-Aging, Character Study, Post-Canon, [Podfic] Grow by jellyfishfire)
how do i forgive myself (for losing so much time) by thunderwear (M, 26k, wangxian, post-canon, de-aging, angst w/ happy ending, fluff, pining, first kiss) LXC de-ages but its such a cute fic!! wangxian take care of the baby
Silver & Gold by beeswaxing (E, 162k, wangxian, post-canon, de-aging, fluff & angst, happy ending, fix-it of sorts, family bonding, established relationship, non-sexual intimacy, BAMF WWX, pining, protective WWX, Mojo’s post)
always and forever by wqngji (Not rated, 3k, wangxian, post-canon, de-aging, child WWX, fluff, humor, protective LWJ)
Before the Morning Sun by Vamillepudding (G, 12k, wangxian, JC & LWJ, post-canon, de-aging, protective JC, light angst, implied/referenced child abuse, kid LWJ)
found your writing on my wall by howodd5ever (T, 25k, wangxian, JC & LWJ, JC & WWX, post-canon, de-aged WWX, accidental baby acquisation, getting together, referenced child neglect, case fic, nightmares, discussion of parent loss, child food insecurity)
shelter by hauntedotamatone (T, 5k, wangxian, post-canon, homelessness, food insecurity, childhood trauma, past child abuse, hurt/comfort, established relationship, loss of parents)

10. Hi mods! You do awesome work! I’ve recently read “The Price of a Home” (and associated series) and “Hold You Like a Victory” and I was hoping you would know of any more fics that play with the concept of WWX being a whipping boy. This seems like something that easily fits into the canon Jiang family dynamic and there’s just so much potential for fleshing out this AU. I’m dying for more content with this premise. Thank you! @philomathmac
The Earth Rings In Your Ears by bluerainmist (M, 60k, wangxian, whipping boy au, angst w/ happy ending, getting together, drama, rape/non-con elements, fuck or die, bad guys made them do it, corporal punishment, check all the tags!, smut, hurt/comfort, secret relationship, relationship negotiation, enemies to lovers, fuckbuddies to lovers, canonical character death, trauma)
~*~
11.vHii~ Does anyone know of any fics with a concept like or similar to this post for the next itmf? Thank you✨✨✨
JustAWanderingBabbit’s consistent take is that the sword master *was* sexually harassing MY, and sometimes NMJ learns of this in time.

12. Hello!! Just read through Build Your Home (on a landslide) from one of the comps and now I’m craving more fics that explore A-Yuan’s trauma (whether post canon or fix-t). Thank you so much for the hard work you do!!! 🤎
history by tongzhi (T, 15k, Post-Canon, Angst, Grief/Mourning, Hopeful Ending, lsz gets angry, LSZ and JL refuse to take their family's trauma forward, jiujiu is the best, Character Study, lqy abolitionist queen)
it took and left no name by Itabane (G, 1k, Canon Divergence, LSZ-centric, LSZ Remembers, Angst with a Happy Ending, Family Feels)
Gathered Herbs & Sweet Grasses by hansbekhart (Not Rated, 19k, WangXian, dad wangji, LWJ's Questionable Parenting Skills, Grief/Mourning, Recovery, Injury Recovery, Hopeful Ending)

13. Hi mods! There are no enough words for me to thank you for your hard work, as you make my days with each of your posts <3 Now, I'm not sure if this has been asked, if so, sorry for asking again, I might not look thoroughly: Do you know of fics from someone/something weird's point of view? I mean someone like Lil' Apple or Fairy (I read one of each before), or maybe places like Cloud Recesses or Lotus Pier? Thanks so much!!
There's a Baby Loose in the Burial Mounds! by ScarlettStorm (G, 3k, lsz is the best boy, even the ghosts think so, Original Male Characters, Original Female Characters, But they're all dead, sentient burial mounds)
our own kind of magic. by scarletwanlian (T, 18k, WangXian, Modern AU, 5+1 Things, Fluff, Humor, Mutual Pining, Friends to Lovers, Magic, Magical Realism, College/University, Slice of Life, Witch!WWX, Banter) we get the pov of pieces of furniture 😁
then sigh not so by BlackWiresOnHerHead (T, 6k, WangXian, XuanLi, MianQing, Modern AU, sentient house, slow burn as told by an impatient narrator, Meddling, smart home but with magic instead of invasive technology, POV Outsider, the gang simply Has A Good Time, Getting Together, Sexual Tension, Recreational Drug Use)
My Next Life as a Bunny by shorimochi (T, 10k, WangXian, Reincarnation, Canon Divergence, Vore, but not really?, Food) ok this might be stretching it bc its technically wwx pov but wwx is reincarnated into food. so its also food pov.
The Donkey Books of How to Be Good and Punish Mean People Series by Admiranda (G, 6k, Crack, background wangxian, shameless indulgent fic, sometimes you just gotta write about a donkey, Not JC Friendly, bullying lqr, slight allusions to depression as seen through a donkey's eyes, shameless fluff, donkey ficlet, allusions to animal birth, The Cloud Recesses Rabbits, Little Apple is a mother now, WWX's excellent naming skills)
Дзінші by krinjina (T, 606, WangXian, China, Hurt/Comfort, Real Life, Кімнати персонажів теж важливі) in Ukrainian; the Jingshi’s POV of LWJ’s life. (The tag “Real Life” and the coda—which Google Translate renders as, “And they would write, give them free will and hands”—suggests some Reality Subtext.)
Песенка льда и пламени by kasmunaut & WTF Modao Zushi 2022 (fandom_Wei_Wuxian_and_Co) the title translates as “Song of Ice and Fire”. (G, <1k, wangxian, canon divergence, drama, animal death, crack, fairy tale, fluff, rabbits) Here’s a Russian-language fic (confession: I read it via Google Translate) that deals with a CQL-specific point: the POV character is one of Lan Yi’s spiritual white rabbits—who suddenly has to adjust to a very different way of life. (And yes, the story addresses how they subsisted in the ice cave.)

14. I’m in the Mood For: Any fics where WWX submits to the Lans for cleansing in exchange for safety for the Wens. I read Decay by ante bunny and loved the premise, but wanted more focus on the consequences of the cleansing.
I love the theory that resentful energy can’t heal but can hold things in stasis, and thus WWX is literally being held together with resentful energy. Because otherwise how did he survive getting stabbed and dropped at great height and starving all without a golden core.
It seems like something WWX would do - allow his execution is exchange for the Wen safety. In fact, I guess I’m in the mood for any fics where cleansing WWX reveals injuries or WWX giving himself up in exchange for Wen safety?Thank you, mods! You are awesome! @philomathmac
❤️ three surgeries and a mercy kill by MarbleGlove (T, 11k, medical procedures, fix-it, Demonic Cultivation, Canon Divergence, Fix-It, Self-Indulgent, WWX Has a New Golden Core, Everyone Lives/Nobody Dies) the resentment is very similar to your thoughts, but it does not have the 'giving himself up' element
Cradle by Dragonesque (T, 195k, WIP, Canon Divergenc, Adopted children, Yiling Wei Sect, BAMF WWX) He doesn't turn himself in (its yilingwei sect) but in later chapters I remember them discussing healing applications of resentful energy that worked in this way?
Boys With a Broken Soul, Hearts With a Gaping Hole. by JaenysBloodcourt (Not rated, 7k, wangxian, LXC & LWJ, LSZ & WWX, fluff & angst, happy ending, boys in love, arranged marriage)
❤️ the kite string and the anchor rope by fleurdeliser (M, 39k, wangxian, canon divergence, sick child, after the yiling date)

These Things Stay the Same by notevenyou (E, 29k, WangXian, Modern AU, Kid Fic, Minor Character Death, Injury, Natural Disasters, Angst with a Happy Ending, Hospitalization, Accidents) wwx is in an accident/coma and misidentified as mxy… great story and similar to the ask!

for the ask game (whichever ones you want to answer):
Top 5 vegetables
top 5 story ideas you wish you had time to write
top 5 places you’d like to visit
top 5 wtf moments your favorite OC got into
ugh i want to answer ALL of these, but the first is just so deeply compelling. i love veggies, so it's hard to pick, but i have done my best:
artichoke
gai lan
ramps
shishito peppers
lima beans
as for top 5 story ideas i wish i had some time to write, here are some longfic ideas i have floating around in my head. some i've had for over a real long time now. they're fun to toy with, to roll over in my mind until they're smooth like a river stone.
a babylon 5/mdzs crossover with telepaths and songxuexiao, with xue yang being a telepath who is on the run and song lan as a psi corps cop tasked with tracking him down.
a deeply intricate post ca:tws winterhawk story where clint is holed in in a safehouse somewhere and bucky hunts him down and asks for his help in exchange for information on phil coulson's whereabouts. loops in some early agents of shield stuff and is kind of an around-the-world casefic.
currently i'm toying with the idea of a x-files au where krycek runs into mulder in a bdsm club. some horrible things ensue.
a very strange omegaverse (i don't even really like omegaverse) fma:b au where roy is a late-presenting omega and edward is an alpha. i feel like this would mostly just be self-indulgent identity misery more than it would ever be porn.
i have a kylux scp!au partially written. i think about it sometimes, bc i love the vibe (no one is having a great time) and the universe (so spooky, so strange, so governmental) so much.
[ask me my top 5 anything]

I love mulan au thank you for my new brain rot!! What if the wen brand was like the epicenter of resentful energy in his chest? :O like black tendrils along the scar or somethin spooky
I love that the mulan AU is sparking joy ✨ I’m not too sure where resentful energy plays into this AU, I was toying around with ideas for the ‘reveal’ scene but I don’t have any set plot points 😂. I thought perhaps transmasc wwx, or maybe an a/b/o secondary gender reveal, or something to do with a stolen identity (ie, he enlisted in jiang cheng’s place). However!! if this AU were to include some aspects of MDZS cultivation then wwx secretly using resentful energy & being exposed for it would also work!! The dark Wen brand does make for a cool reveal :3 Let your imagination run away with it!! I encourage anyone to build on the AU with art or writing or whatever you please ;)

hey I was the one who asked about ao3 I'm sorry if the question came off as odd, I love your takes on mdzs and was wondering if you ever wrote any fics because you have really great diction on your posts and I thought 'This person could make really great fics' so I thought id ask, that's all
it's fine! lmao it just really looked like i was potentially getting set up for some weird anon hate game.
thank you! and the answer is i do have an AO3--i used to link it here a lot--but it's only got two mdzs fics on it. despite my having struggled to focus on any fandom besides mdzs for like two years.
because what happened when i got stuck in this fandom like a suction cup directly to the brain is, i wound up reading a lot more smut than i usually tolerate, because of the nature of the novel and how their relationships with sex are meaningfully integrated with their characterization and development as people and relative to one another. so a lot of the smut in this fandom has substance in a way i care about.
and my writing always reflects my reading material in a 'ooh i could do that like this' kinda way, so i started generating my own fic concepts with a sex element that i wanted to explore.
and then i got really invested in this new form and its tricks and affordances, so the only fics in this fandom i've actually been finishing are E-rated, because i'm inspired by the learning process.
(also because it turns out this shit is so easy to write, like you can cheap out on so many structural and narrative elements if you put sex in there, i'm so mad about this still. cheap!!!)
and having finished them i want to share, you know?
so i got a different ao3 for that, since mostly i like and write gen stuff, and i didn't wish to subject my existing subscribers to my learning to porn. i'm not sharing it here though, sorry, because everyone i've shared it with (upon request) has been weird about it.
the fic isn't even particularly outre! i'm remixing stuff that's done a lot in the fandom, according to my own artistic sensibilities! i do not know what the Weird is and what private conclusions are being made about me as a person on the basis of my very ace sex pollen remixes and shit. but it makes me anxious so i will Not be doing it anymore.
anyway as a reward or something for the guts to come back with your name out and take another shot and for the compliments <3, which of these not-sexy mdzs fic concepts do you vote i thwack into a postable form over the next month or so, and put on my main?
post-canon wwx gets amnesia back to the yiling laozu in burial mounds era and his current life explained very badly by lan jingyi, and concludes the lan have coerced him into a very creepy situation
funny wangxian modern au incorporating the height thing i was talking about earlier this week, where the main plot is ripped off from an autobiographical anecdote the singer told at a concert i went to and i was like, this would make a great one of those modern aus people keep writing. oh no now i want to.
time travel fixit outside pov, where wwx and wen ning get physically catapulted back from the qiongqi pass to before the war, and go and intervene just before lotus pier can be destroyed, wearing a mask and spooky cloak so no one will know the yiling laozu is wei wuxian (and a weimao so no one notices the ghost general is wen ning but let's be real that was less likely to happen for several reasons)
thing where the misunderstandings go off in a different direction early on, and wwx thinks lan wangji and mo xuanyu were actually an item and his impersonation has been tragically successful. very funny dramatic irony concept that is in execution going to be like 70% angst. some of it very funny angst though. (this one is the least developed because it doesn't really suggest its own plot.)
find what already exists at Kieron_ODuibhir lmao.

Fics recs for MDZS/The Untamed
Pull out game weak by 74243
WLW Modern AU. Extremely hot lwj and wwx hook up on a dating app and when they meet in real life realize oops it’s the girl I was obsessed with in high school. So scorching, LWJ really makes WWX work for it, but she likes it
Many happy returns by orange_crushed
Modern AU slight meet-ugly where lwj thinks wwx is the person he’s hired for the night and wwx thinks lwj likes him (spoiler alert lwj does). This author!! Explores each stage of their relationship and really makes you feel it
most times a wish by impossibletruths
Modern Cultivation AU lwj and wwx are roommates and coworkers and a curse follows them home. They like each other so! much! I really can’t take it.
eleven thousand meters & airborne by aroceu
Modern AU lwj and wwx share an airplane bathroom to avoid people on their flight. They get kicked out of the bathroom, talk, fall in lust (love) and return to the bathroom to join mile high club as god intended and they deserve. The sexual tension in this one is fire
the thrill of knowing by starmins
Modern College AU lwj is roommates with nhs and meets wwx after a sleepless night. This is such a sweet blossoming of their friendship and love, I feel warm all over thinking about it. No one knows lwj like wwx and vice versa
The Naming of Small Things by BromeliadDreams
Modern College AU wwx and lwj end up on the same academic committee and join a mini, secret committee (organized by Wen Qing) to replace the suggested keynote speaker Jin Guangshan with the much better Luo Qingyang. lwj falls into unwilling love
The Nightingale by oneiriad
Modern Soulmate AU wwx touches a book his soulmate has touched, sparking a connection between them. He meets lwj at the airport, both were traveling to meet each other. Their relationship starts off a little rocky but ends with marathon sex so it all works out!
try a little tenderness by ilip13
Modern BDSM AU lwj teaches wwx about healthy bdsm relationships and takes care of him. Lwj is the dom wwx has been waiting for and wwx is the sub lwj has been waiting for. They are perfectly matched <3
Plants and Puffins, a Duet in Six Parts by Lemur710
Modern AU lwj and wwx both teach music at the same school and are sent to a conference together. LWJ finds wwx annoying, loud, and as always, irresistible! They make beautiful music together in every way
hold up a mirror by spookykingdomstarlight
Modern AU wwx decides to kill two birds with one stone by fake dating lwj to both avoid being set up on blind dates and make the unknown object of lwj’s affection jealous. Spoiler alert, the object of lwj’s affections is NOT nhs. Spooky’s writing as always is wonderful and full of love

Section Four: Possibilities
X. Wicked tricks and beyond: modern with magic AUs
XI: In another life: modern AUs - no magic
XII. Things that might have been: canon divergences/retellings (includes works with pre-ep50 getting togethers)
X. Wicked tricks and beyond: modern with magic AUs
*hide fox, and all after* by blackfeather (oogenesis)
summary: this fic!!!!! so this modern cutivation AU is mxy pov, he’s on the run and he’s going to get his revenge on the jins! this loosely follows canon so it involves dealing with nhs and bringing wwx back. this mxy is phenomenal, the worldbuilding and magic system is super cool, the action/thriller aspect is so gripping, the characterizations for nhs is incredible, the modern twist on canon events is really fun, and the kindness with which sensitive topics are handled is beautiful
if I had to pick, this would be my alltime favorite cql/mdzs fanfic - it’s so beloved to me, which is funny since it focuses on characters I otherwise don’t care much for, and follows the novel while I prefer cql. the last time it updated it was right near my birthday, so I have even more of a personal fondness for it. even after years, I still find this fic so fun and compelling that it makes me lose my mind, so it’s a shame to say it’s unlikely to ever be finished, as the author has moved on from the fandom. I still think it’s worth a read.
check notes: sexual assault/harassment/blackmail, suicide, and homophobia are mentioned
work issues: none

summary: so wwx is a disgraced curse-breaker and lwj is a dragon in human form searching for something taken from him. the way that the cql plot was integrated into this narrative was so fun and surprisingly faithful to canon, and despite lwj being a bit too normal, I enjoyed the characters and their developing relationship.
there’s some fluff, there’s some h/c, there’s some angst, there’s a dramatic finale. the misunderstanding at the end surprised me with how emotional it made me. a little schlocky, but a really good time. and I spent so long avoiding it since I didn’t like shapeshifting AUs, too. more fool me

summary: wwx is an infamous demon a la bartimaeus, and lwj is a demon hunter. they’re mistakenly, magically bonded together when wwx is summoned to the human world, and have to figure out how to send him back to the demon realm while keeping his identity a secret. the better lwj gets to know wwx, the more he has to face his assumptions and principles regarding demons.
the plot is really interesting and the romance is wonderfully developed. action scenes are a bit shaky but I think the worldbuilding and tantalizing mysteries more than make up for it. another sadly discontinued work, but I think it ends at a nice place anyway. novel characterizations, but not for the bad stuff

summary: oh, boy. modern AU with cultivation - a russian doll-style death timeloop set in new york city following a wwx (believed to be dead) and lwj (studying for his doctorate) a few years after the roughly-canon adjacent events of nightless city. there’s some memory manipulation involved to make wwx and lwj forget each other after the war, but it’s easiest to just read it and see how it all comes together.
the novel-inspired worldbuilding is absolutely incredible, and I was also impressed by the more cql-leaning characterizations and the wonderful relationship development. absolutely lovely descriptions of the characters falling in love and finding joy amidst some of the darkest lives I’ve seen them live. this is a very angsty and difficult version of the story and I did have to fight back tears more than once, but it was so worth it. currently unfinished but the last chapter took a year to come out so I’m holding out hope
the final two chapters before hiatus went a little off the rails imo, wwx became just a little self-pitying for my taste and the plot was stalled in favor of longer-than-necessary flashbacks, repetitive descriptions of the showdown, and plainly stating the emotional state of the characters with writing less sophisticated and more cliche than I had come to expect. I hope that the next installment brings the higher quality of early chapters
expect everything that happened to the wens, wwx, and mama lan in canon, plus child death. see notes for each chapter’s specific warnings; this is not a lighthearted or easy work

a bite of a vow, a taste of the truth by occultings (microcomets)
summary: kind of a guilty pleasure tbh because this is schlocky and tropey but modern AU wwx and lwj are cultivators who are assigned a case on the disappearance of all these couples and they have to pretend to be a couple in order to infiltrate and…yeah there’s succubi involved they have to 'prove' they're a couple. so they pretend? but there’s no actual sexual activity forced by situation or under the influence of magic
when they do eventually get together I thought it was really sweet. the characterizations are good, there’s fun interpersonal drama/angst, and the ending made me smile a lot. I also liked the exploration of wwx’s backstory and I thought it tied in well with canon. what can I say, something this fanned fiction is kind of embarrassing but it's still fun
work issues: several allusions to wwx's cnc fantasies. the actual sex scene isn't very appealing imo but nothing terrible

*give up your shape to the falling snow by thistleghost
summary: a moody and introspective modern with cultivation work - wwx is experiencing serious derealization and depersonalization, which I think were portrayed quite effectively. it doesn’t have much of a plot but he finds lwj and they spend some time together and explore his needs and get together, and he ends up in a better place than where he starts. cultivation magic is present but more background than than character drama
this is indeed the petplay fic I had to abandon despite it otherwise being very compelling, then came back to because damn, the good parts really were very good.
this one is heavy, so mind the tags/notes. wwx experiences suicidal ideation and talks about it later in the fic. he also engages in a sexual encounter (not with lwj), which he ends up disliking and wishing to escape, and which he thinks back on later as something unpleasant

silt, or scurvy by astronicht
summary: a modern take on post-sunshot wwx, who’s living with jiang cheng and, without a golden core, grappling with his chronic pain while using dc as a tool to keep his body semi-functional. a loose couple of vignettes with no overarching plot, it’s introspective and quite sad in a way that I think characterized the canon arc very accurately. I esp thought that wwx being resigned to, but not comfortable with, his experience of being exposed and without privacy, and his mental health in decline with loneliness and isolation on top of his pain was a good choice
the wangxian here is well-written, but they don’t get together and the work has been abandoned, and wwx is not a headspace where it seems possible that it’ll happen anytime soon. so their relationship is a comfort and a relief, but it doesn’t go anywhere further even if the implication (in the tags, at least) is that it eventually will. moody, reflective, rather painful, but not devoid of warmth and comfort, and a worthwhile read for all that

*a tide in two seas by occultings (microcomets)
summary: modern AU with cultivation and interdimensional travel (think the golden compass). lwj and wwx, high school acquaintances, reunite on a train late at night. after a strange incident, they stumble into a mystery that tears them from their reality and forces them to confront their relationship. tagged cql but definitely novel-verse, though not in the bad ways. the character writing is incredibly good and avoids every single annoying pitfall I see in fic, especially novel fic. the wwx, jc, and lwj are especially excellent. jc is actually not bad! the plot isn’t the focus, but it’s just thrilling and the worldbuilding is really cool as well
two versions of the same character make out and there's a longer sex scene with multiple versions of the same characters interacting sexually, but it was honestly not as weird as it could have been. check the author notes for further warnings.

they’re sent to canonverse and meet their married novel selves. both of them, esp wwx is fucking incredibly written. I love when he rags on his younger and more ignorant self, I love his confidence and his air of danger and his love and his protectiveness. he’s in mxy’s body and the modern AU wwx is in his original body, so that makes for some interesting scenes. and the novel wx is impeccable. they’re joined at the hip, deeply loving, respectful of their guests but not embarrassed about being married or sexual. it’s some of the best parts of canon, no rape jokes or treating them as sexual maniacs who traumatize children. wwx does gloss over his past actions a bit but it’s clear he knew what he did was wrong. annoyingly, the height difference between them is a full head and there's a few references to lwj having big hands, but it's really not as fetishy as most fics where that's the case
he and lwj can clearly see what’s happening with their AU selves, so they guide the other set of themselves to admitting what they want. they did steal the show a bit so by the end I was more invested in them than in the modern AU wx, but it was a nice romance anyway. and it was funny when they have to explain wuxia concepts to the modern characters and vice versa. there’s a lot of explicit scenes in this, including an entire chapter where the four of them have sex. I thought it would be weirder than it was but the closest to ‘selfcest’ was just the wwxs making out. and it’s a chapter that’s easily to skip if you’re not interested in it

summary: similar to the above - parallel universes collide when a modern AU, single father lwj finds a canonverse wwx suddenly in his backyard. the two of them end up on a romp through time and space as they try to get him home, and become closer in the process. along with lwj’s young daughter, they see how again and again, versions of themselves find each other, and sometimes lose each other. it's a little bittersweet, but definitely has a happy ending. the anxious 'wangxian endgame 🥺?' part of me was not disappointed
cql-specific characterizations, and really good ones at that. lwj is subdued but genuine, his daughter is a delight, wwx is a riot, and all the other versions of themselves ring true to themselves. original worldbuilding with exciting different worlds. and lwj is trans!

summary: modern AU with lovely characterizations, about recovery from grief, and the expression of love through food, with a well-written trans lwj. so lwj hasn't seen wwx in almost a year, and neither has anybody else. he's still in touch with some of his friends, but hasn't contacted lwj once in all that time. why did he vanish? where has he been? is he okay? what was their relationship before he disappeared? what happened between them? and will lan wangji ever be able to speak to speak to him again?
the mystery is fun in the first few chapters but I think it spends far too little time on actually dealing with grief and too much time getting really elaborate on the minutiae of self-analysis and guilt and ‘he’s going to hate me!!! he should hate me!!! which gets tiresome. it’s overall nice, and I liked it a lot, but it wasn’t quite as magical or romantic towards the end as I would have liked. the wq and a-yuan were really great though, as well as the lwj and wwx. worth reading for sure

summary: if you don’t already like great british bakeoff, you probably won’t enjoy this fic. but I watch gbbo and I am just floored by how accurate this fic is to the show in terms of structure, dialogue, judging, tone, atmosphere, and food. a bit ooc by necessity, but not too much. mostly a lighthearted, funny, and engaging work depicting the characters we all know and love competing in this baking competition, with a satisfying conclusion.
half of the fic is the juniors watching the show from the future and getting super invested, but I think that section is bad so I skip it. also there is wx at the very end, but I find the lwj and the romance very dull and forgettable, even cringe

work issues: it described wwx as a gremlin and make him kind of annoying and immature, but not to the point where it ruined the fic. also, wwx and lwj start celebrating christmas here, which I don’t love, but they’re taking it as a family holiday/tradition for themselves rather than a religious event. since this is modern AU and set in the usa, I can see it. my roommate does the same thing

*strangers on the shore by seularen
summary: a super fun cold war-era spy fic! not quite a modern AU, but close enough. I absolutely love the way jyl is written - she’s personable, kind, bright, protective, daring, sneaky, and very human. switches between her pov and wwx’s. all the characterizations were excellent, especially lwj. the wx was really lovely. I enjoyed the drama and interpersonal tension and secret identities and intrigue, and the way relationship dynamics mirrored canon was very impressive.
extremely well researched, and to my relief, not really taking the side of any country, but instead exploring the people and philosophies behind the conflict, and the injustices all government commit. all the spying is really for the personal benefits of the characters, not any government
there is some violence but really not as much as the tags make it sound. easily one of the best fics that actually confronts societal homophobia. not ignoring it, but recognizing it without making it gratuitous
unfortunately the jc in this one is awful. just really disrespectful and ‘jokingly’ homophobic and he’s never called on it and he never apologized and I hate him, but him and wwx work together for some action scenes. and I think the writing also got a little away form the author at certain points, because the pacing got weird at the end and events seemed disconnected, and I could never tell where anyone was, country-wise. it was a bit confusing. still a satisfying finale, though

summary: the second in the series that contains his hands keep turning to birds and flying away from him (him being you)
postres, wwx and lwj are traveling while trying to solve the mystery of the cursed arm. lwj is full of feelings he doesn’t know how to name and embarrassed of the potential of them not being returned. wwx is likewise nervous to be vulnerable, and has an unnamed gender dysphoria to boot
their conversations around wwx's identity while and after they get together are really lovely and poignant. I liked how wwx's dysphoria during intimacy was managed. I also appreciated how inexperienced lwj was - it always makes more sense to me that he wouldn’t know what he’s doing. overall a unique concept with impeccable cql characterization
the one odd thing is that lwj went from extremely insecure and unsure about wwx's feelings to understanding exactly why he acts the way he does and being determined to tell him how he feels after just one drunken confession scene. the change was so abrupt as to be jarring
the tag about ‘sloppiness in regards to consent’ concerned me but I think it was referring to them kissing while wwx had been drinking. during the actual sex scene there’s nothing to worry about. they went slowly and listened to each other really well and respected each other’s boundaries. it was sweet.

*To love you is to know myself by natcat5
summary: oof, what a monster. essentially a retelling of the story from lwj’s pov. it blends novel and cql canon, which wrecks havoc on the characterizations, but the resulting characters and story are so interesting. I like the writing and dialogue quite a lot, and the ending is incredibly satisfying. it skims over things in canon we already saw, so its not too repetitive. also, the title rules
unfortunately the section that covers the first siege of BM just drags on so miserably and for so long that I really had to apply myself to make it through. worth it, but whew. also the very end of the main fic has some really nonsensical and contrived conflict but overall it’s a solid work
the second work in this series, where wwx and lqr have a confrontation postcanon, is absolutely phenomenal and my favorite fic, bar none, about their relationship

despite struggling with a lot of internalized homophobia, lwj is a lot more communicative than in canon, and wwx knows what he wants, so their attraction and regard for each other actually goes somewhere. of course, by the sunshot arc that makes everything even more painful. I like how the emotion was written, and the angst in the last few were just so on-point. also the lwj pov in the last work was darkly hilarious. cql canon

Covered By Frost and Snow by Siamesa
summary: novel-verse AU where a-qing is taken in by lwj after being attacked and left for dead by xy. I love the a-qing in this - even after for living for years with the lans she’s still sneaky, a liar and a thief, slightly manipulative, and cynical. because of her street smarts she feels protective of the juniors and of characters far older than her, including lwj. since she’s so different from the gentry and since she has such a personality, her relationship with lwj (and the rest of the lans) is genuinely unique in anything I’ve read. I also liked the way her past trauma is treated, and how she actually does impact the plot. imagining a world where she survived is so rewarding
along with the above, wrote something tagged ‘dark!lwj’ whatever that means3Cbr>author issues: this fic is extremely faithful to novel canon dynamic so all the wx scenes stressed me out. it seems like there was no drunk sex scene which is a relief, but it has everything else + the trope of ‘these adults are so stupid and they need me, a teenager, to get them to admit they like each other’ which made me cringe
a-qing is physically disabled in this one, which I liked most of the time, but her method of communication is often treated exactly the same as speaking, which is annoying because speaking doesn’t have the same mechanics or restrictions

Resilience. by Vrishchika
summary: short novel-based time-travel fix-it in which, four years after wwx’s death, jc uses an array to return to the sunshot campaign and tries to arrange for wwx to be killed by the wens. his actions change things in ways he doesn’t expect. jc is very much his angry, entitled, and homophobic novel self, so the way that his and wwx’s relationship deteriorates as wwx sets boundaries and seeks better treatment for himself with other characters is extremely satisfying. a comforting and honestly quite warm little fic where everything goes right for wwx, nobody dies who didn’t have it coming, and all is well. author uses the phrase ‘silver eyes’ a distressing number of times tho
work issues: spoilers ig but lwj goes back in time as well to try to stop jc from hurting wwx, so his eventual relationship with wwx feels slightly creepy to me since this is an older lwj in the body of his younger self. he’s older by maybe 8 years and we don’t know exactly how old wwx was at the time, but maybe 18-20? a bit weird imo

ok i cant resist asking about "Ghost Town - wei wuxian is a ghost, sppooookkkyy - mdzs" that looks so cool!! is it abt his 13 years? either way it's super neat!
It's not, but I can totally see why you'd think that! This is a modern au where everyone is reincarnated BUT wwx never gets revived into mxy so he can't be reincarnated. Instead, his soul spends the thousands of years between canon and now reforming, just in time for nhs and jc's paranormal YouTube series to take off!!
Here's a snippet! I have not written much more tho 😅
The intro shows clips of the six episodes they compiled, small snippets of them exploring the Burial Mounds interwoven with old looking parchment scrolls and traditional ink drawings of various mythical ghouls and demons, complete with spooky music and a dark filter overlay.
There are small soundbites of their voices, just enough to get the audience interested in the story, over the top of the music. Nie Huaisang's voice quavers out, "Things are getting scary," and Jiang Cheng can't help but snort when he hears his own voice answer, "I'm quitting, I can't do this."
"I can't believe you did that, this is clickbait, right? People will riot. That’s not how it went at all."
"Standard industry practice, people expect it now," Nie Huaisang laughs in reply. "Besides, it did get scary."
Jiang Cheng stays quiet. It did get scary, but it's not like he's going to say it.
The intro ends with a flourishing crescendo of Lan Wangji's guqin that has Jiang Cheng rolling his eyes, and a gruesome, stylised blood-splatter that drips down the screen into the title, Ghost Town.
Nie Huaisang's trembling voice whispers, "Who are you?" just before the screen goes black and Lan Wangji's rumbling baritone answers, a strong contrast to the silence that absolutely in no way sends a shiver down Jiang Cheng’s spine as he remembers the moment.
"The Yiling Laozu."

Abt ur Bly Manor AU: which roles will you be giving to Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian? Also, how spooky we talkin? Like imagining burial mounds spooky, or Junji Ito spooky?
@anarchistbitch @allhallowsxig @wei--wuxian THANK YOU BESTIEEEEES!!!!
so it all started happening when me and @obsclete watched Bly Manor together and brrrr the brainworms went insane
so in my head it wouldn't be a 1:1 AU, because there are intrinsically different stories and characters, and trying to change MDZS to fit into this mold would be a disservice, so i'm going more for "similar plot and vibes" but definitely not trying to replicate every plot point, sideplot or character relationship
i wrote a whole thing just now that i decided to shove into a google docs bc it got too long, but the general idea is: Modern AU (21st century), Bly Manor is actually Luanzang Gang Manor someplace in China, which belongs to Wen Popo and Uncle Fouth. A-Yuan is the child (just one) who lost his parents.
yes the manor is actually built on top of the old Burial Mounds, but the story isnt the same as MDZS, and i wouldn't call it a reincarnation AU either
there is, however, an ancient demonic Yiling Laozu, and his spirit (or what's left of it) is the Lady of the Lake
Wen Qing (cleaning and such that wen popo cant do anymore) and Wen Ning (house cook) live in there with Wen Popo, helping to take care of the house and a-yuan, who became traumatized after his parents death and an incident with two ex-workers from the manor (i'm thinking xue yang and xxc with something similar as peter and rebecca). there are ghosts (hi a-qing). uncle fouth takes care of the adminastrive and money stuff, but he has to live in another city bc of the wine brewery he owns
it's hard to say who in wangxian are dani and jamie, i found it hard to fit them in a mold. just know that wangxian knew each other from their teenage years (manchester chinese center in england, music lessons), then became close friends in college, until something Bad happens between him and probably wen chao, and he has to drop out in the first year and run away as to not affect the jiangs. lan zhan graduates with a teaching degree and moves to china, then he learns about the live-in postion in luanzang gang and takes it for reasons i still need to think better about. it turns out wei ying was there too, working as a general maintance guy who also gives a-yuan music lessons. these wens prob heard about what happened in europe (and likely knew wy personally in manchester idk) and decided to take him in and help him
i have a lot of ideas to how it evolves, but i have One scene stuck in my head, which is the one where the Lady of the Lake is taking Flora away, and Dani goes after them yelling "it's me, it's you, it's us!" i keep pictuing a faceless, dark, resentful ghost of the yiling laozu who finally found "a-yuan" again (same way Viola did when she found children who she thought was her child) carrying him to the blood pool (which became just a lake now... or is it) as wei ying run desperately after them, screams the words and takes the yiling laozu into himself to save a-yuan..... yeah....
(the backstory of this yiling laozu will probably have something to do with this post)
anyway yeah, there'll be a lot of stuff about grief, memories, time, probably some references to Hill House as well and idk... i just love the vibes!! it's like "modern au -- no magic (or is it?)" and "reincarnation au? but also not?" and feelings feelings lots of feelings!

Ah so I saw your post asking for prompts. If u don't mind, I have an idea I wanted to share.
So the prompt is for MDZS and it's modern au, WWX dressing up as a spooky Yiling Laozu on Halloween (or just anyday up to u) just popping up at people zoom call or other virtual meeting at 3 A.M.
Thank u and sorry if this isn't the correct way to suggest a prompt.
Hi! Yes this is perfect thanks for the prompt 🙏 you didn’t specify a ship so i made it wwx centric and took some liberties with the setting hehe.
Hope you enjoy ✨
Wei Ying had arguably the worst job one could have, in his honest opinion. It was better than having no job of course, but not by a wide margin.
Being a starving engineering student didn’t leave him with the freedom to choose from a lot of options near his campus but there were a few options. He could’ve tried being a cute barista, or a waiter like half his classmates. Hell, if he’d waited until it was legal for him he could’ve taken anything halftime with no commitments and now he’d be able to be a barista and fulfill his dream of learning mixology. If he had a sliver of free time then he would’ve been able to take it up as a hobby, even.
But no, unfortunately he had sold his soul to the devils of tech support customer service. He’s unsure where his ‘company’ resides. It’s fortunate he isn’t being employed by a scam call center, but that’s just by pure luck and not a conscious effort of making sure his employer is legit. He just saw they needed people who knew ‘something’ about computers, that were interested in working from home, had ✨flexible hours✨, and could passably speak a second language. Oh what a fool he’d been.
So, that’s the reason why he was trying to resist boredom and sleep at 3 am on a Halloween night. He didn’t celebrate it personally, but being in university meant the people around him would and will take any opportunity to get drunk. Fuck how he wished he was drunk.
Instead, because fate was cruel, he was on duty until his shift ended at eight am. Please remind him why he chose this life?
He dressed up in the spirit of the date and entertained himself by hopping on random zoom meetings while he waited for his work phone to go off. He was not malicious in his intent, he didn’t really consider it as hacking either. He just found a vulnerable meeting left open without password protection and he greeted the poor inhabitants with in his silly little costume.
And by silly it meant he went all off. If he learned anything from his visual fx artist sister it was how to use a bit of latex and fake blood to instill fear in the souls of his enemies… or unsuspecting victims.
Not that he purposefully wanted to victimize anyone! But if his scary appearance served as a PSA for online security, well! Then it definitely counted as part of his job description.
Maybe he overdid it with the dry ice fog, and his black sclera contacts were uncomfortable to work in but… this was one of the few joys he could find in his current situation!
This was his second year pulling this off so he had the opportunity of seeing people online talking about the ‘ghost’ that haunted zoom meetings and Omegle (if he was being lazy). A glitchy monster with half his face rotten off and a tongue as long as an arm and slimy as guts (it was edible slime with strawberry jam). They called him the Yiling Laozu and feared his return.
Well, Wei Ying was definitely going to give them what they wanted… (Oh shit! His work phone went off.)

Sentinel Guide au mdzs.
Guide Wei Wuxian plus spooky ghost powers. I think 'guide' lends itself well to being a yin type power but this isn't a hard rule. Lan Xichen, Meng Yao, Jiang Yanli fall into the soft redirect over blunt force. Nie Mingjue, Jiang Cheng, Wen Ning are more charge in and reshape types. (Hmm guide Jin Guangyao intentionally overloading his no longer bonded partner? Does Nie Mingjue reach out for someone as he is dying? Did he avoid bonding so as not to drag someone down with him but now uses this to take his killer with him?) For yang type guides, Lan Wangji.
So Wen Ning is dead and Wei Wuxian calls him back. He is susceptible to ghostly path guide magic and even more tethered to emotions while his senses are either the mutest they have ever been and/or felt second hand through Wei Wuxian.
Stabby punch not just Jin Zixuan but all the Jin in the ambush. A feedback loop of horror, anger, sorrow and death. Oops. Do we...continue on to the birthday party? Turn around and hope for the best?
Anyway, Empathy Inquiry psychic emotion touchy touch Guide on Guide this and that even more jealous of Wen Ning.

haunted hayride
spooky season is here!
since Halloween is coming, here’s some spooky updates, coming to you all week! it’s a mdzs halloween update special!
summary: it’s time for Mingjue to help his baby brother get over his fears, and that starts with a haunted hayride.
~
“Da-ge, don’t be like this” Nie Huaisang begged, pulling onto his older brother’s sweater. But Nie Mingjue pushed on, a set look on his face.
“Don’t make me go! PLEASE! I’ll DIE!” Nie Huaisang was close to tears at this rate. Despite his younger brother’s dramatics, Nie Mingjue sighs, turns around and clasps a solid hand on his shoulder.
“It’s just a haunted house. Everything’s fake. We’re also going with all of your friends,” Nie Mingjue tries to assure, though Nie Huaisang just shakes his head.
“They’re your friends,” Nie Huaisang mutters, as his brother huffs at him.
“Doesn’t matter; you’re not going to be alone, if that’s what’s scaring you,” Nie Mingjue says. Nie Huaisang shakes his head hard, begging, pleading, anything for his brother to just turn back and go to any other attraction except for the haunted house.
“Da-geeeeeeeeeee” Nie Huaisang cries, using all of his strength to drag at his brother’s arm. He even digs his heel into the street. His older brother huffs at him again and turns fully around to grab his shoulders. They’re just around three steps to the entrance.
Nie Huaisang quakes slightly in his boots; his older brother is wearing that no more bullshit look on his face.
Instead of reprimanding him like Nie Huaisang expects, Nie Mingjue simply stares hard at him.
“You’re the one that told me you wanted to get over your fear of blood. And this haunted house is gonna help you. We’re gonna help you get over it together. Okay? Believe in me won’t you?”
Nie Huaisang stares back at his brother with wide eyes, but takes in a deep breath.
“You can’t leave me alone in there,” Nie Huaisang says, like a warning.
His older brother just laughs, “I won’t.”
~
True to his word, Nie Mingjue decides not to ditch Huaisang for the goblins and gremlins that jump out to scare him. He lets his younger brother keep a tight hold on the edge of his hoodie (because they’re adults, he still has to act like an actual adult). And Huaisang tries his best not to be too frightened even though he is squeamish. They’ve made it through just about halfway through the house (judging from Wei Ying’s hysterical laughter).
And to think that he only screamed 10 times!
“Okay, okay okay, we’re doing fine. We’re doing fine” Huaisang reassures himself. His hands tighten automatically as they turn into another dark corner and disappear into the red tinted hallway. “It’s okay, Jiang Cheng and the others are just behind you and Da-ge and everyone else is in front. No worries, no worries, everything is dandy”
When Huaisang digs his hand a bit too hard, he realizes that there's a hole in his brother’s hoodie that he hadn’t noticed before. Which is an odd thing and of itself because his Da-ge wouldn’t ever leave the house with a hoodie not intact. Husiang tries to reassure himself that maybe his brother just hadn’t noticed (they were in a rush when they were leaving after all) and so what if the material of his brother’s hoodie is a bit fraying, or that it didn’t exactly feel like cotton anymore…
Nie Huaisang unwraps his fingers from the hoodie and takes a deep step back. The breath is leaving his mouth too fast. He doesn’t dare look up from the floor. Because the person that’s in front of him is definitely not his older brother.
He’s still looking at the floor, so of course he notices immediately when the person’s shoes come into his vision. They’re not the same dark sneakers that his brother had been wearing before (how did something like that completely slip his mind); they’re grey sneakers. Nie Huaisang gulps as his eyes travel up from the floor, going up up up. He goes slower as he gets up to the face, because he doesn’t know who he is going to be looking up when he fully looks up.
“Are you sure you want to stay here by yourself?” the deep glottal voice sneers at him.
Nie Huaisang's eyes widen at the blood smeared face that stares back at him, a crazed smile breaking out onto a pale skin.
He remembers screaming; then everything goes dark.
~
A cool breeze wakes him up, along with the noisy ambiance of the fair. The first thing Nie Huaisang notices is that Wen Ning is fanning him (with a pamphlet). The second thing he is laying down.
“Ge,”
At the call of his name, his older brother stops talking to whoever he was talking to and looks down. His brother’s face enters his vision and Huaisang blindly lets himself be helped up. When he’s sat up against his brother, there’s a cold water bottle thrust into his hands.
“Dude I think the EMT people carrying you out of the haunted house was scarier than the actual mansion,” Mo Xuanyu comments. Jin Zixuan smacks his younger cousin’s shoulder, though Wei Ying adds his own agreeing comments.
“Hey,”
Nie Huaisang looks to his brother. He feels a warm hand rub the back of his neck. It’s something that his brother hadn’t done since they were much much younger.
“Are you hungry? We can get you a snack?” Wen Ning (the blessed kid) asks gently. Nie Huaisang manages a shaky nod in response. But it’s enough for Wei Wuxian to hustle everyone off to the food stall. Huaisang is glad that his brother doesn’t follow after them. In a moment of tiredness, Huaisang leans into his brother’s arms. Mingjue lets him, which is a surprise in and of itself.
“You scared me, Huaisang”
“I mean I did get scared,” Huaisang sasses lightly. His brother gives him a little knock behind his head and a deadpan look that he doesn’t need to see to know that he’s received. Huaisang rubs the back of his head as he sits up again. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to-”
“Why didn’t you stay with me?”
“I didn’t even realize that we all were switched.” Huaisang interrupts, a headache already building up in the back of his head. He can’t imagine his brother blaming this one on him, it wasn’t even his fault, he really didn’t know that they were separated--
“I should have kept a better eye on you,” Mingjue admits. Huaisang can’t believe his ears, his brothers words are almost lost with the ambiance of the autumn fair behind them.
“I should have paid more attention during the walk,” Huaisang tells him, before clinging onto his brother’s arm. It takes Mingjue back to how Huaisang used to act when he was much smaller. His brother manages to laugh at the show of affection, and to Huisang’s surprise, draws him close.
With his brother’s strong arm solidly laid on his shoulder, Nie Huaisang doesn’t feel the fear much any more.
