like i don’t understand xi//cheng to begin with but conceptually i think it’s even funnier when ppl are like “and jingyi is their son!! 🥹” as if jingyi is not canonically ragging on jc at every single opportunity presented to him (and then some)
like this is their dynamic

Tempted to rewatch the untamed just for yicity, especially xue yang, I just love him😩😩
Yi city is and always will be my favourite arc, I do with the untamed went more into xys backstory though. I'm glad it did show his and xxcs relationship, it's interesting to me, and I enjoy talking about it with people. I don't see their relationship as romantic, more as family... God I wish Yi city didn't have a bad ending

Something that frustrated me about the discussion over the Seven Seas MDZS translation was the emphasis on the mere presence of a character guide as a problem. Having a dramatis personae of sorts is a pretty established feature of even traditionally published English language fiction (each A Song of Ice and Fire book has an extensive one, for example) and translated classics (like my edition of Anna Karenina). I disagree that it's infantilizing or talking down to readers, or that it's demeaning to the source material.
What I did object to about those character guides, or at least what I saw of them, was the editorializing. The point of a character guide should be to give readers an easy index of characters to refer to if, say, they forget who's related to who and how. It is not to tell readers how to feel about certain characters, or pass judgment calls about their actions. That, to me, is an inappropriate overstep, especially in official publishing.

the wangxian + a-yuan "dads with an adopted son" thing is fine and enjoyable in fanfics honestly but I think we as a fandom are really not utilizing the idea of all of them in unconventional familial structures enough. Like, canonically it wasn't so much that wwx was a-yuan's guardian as that a-yuan was being raised collectively by the wens and wwx was adopted INTO the larger wen family. And lwj got attached to him through that. A-yuan just has these very attached weird uncles/older cousin figures that aren't related to him by blood at all but keep sticking around.
Just think of a modern AU with a lot less death where lwj does as he does in canon and keeps showering a-yuan in gifts as much as he can and when wwx is like "aiyah lan zhan you're gonna spoil him. Not everyone is as rich as you! What's his family supposed to say if they can't buy him all the stuff you do?" lwj just goes "Hm". And from then on out every year once a-yuan's birthday is near the extended Wen family members (well. the ones that are invited that is. No one wants wen chao at a birthday party) wakes up to a wechat payment from lwj.
Random wen cousin number 6 texts granny like
cousin 6: i just got 400 yuan????
granny: oh that's just wangji
cousin 6: i've never met this guy in my life???
granny: he wants you to buy a-yuan a nice birthday present!
cousin 6: how does he know my bank account???

I always found it very funny that while HC and LWJ's flirting attempts post-waiting flew over XL and WWX's heads, LBH's flirting attempts after the two years were interpreted by SQQ as murder attempts

Okay but Lan Wangji is harboring this extremely sketchy weirdo and protecting him even when he commits crimes, but whenever anyone questions it, someone else steps in to say, "Don't you know? That's his babygirl" and everyone else is like "Oh okay that's his babygirl"

very quickly: the expectation that jgy needs to be some kind of working class hero is :/ to begin with, and condemning him for “buying into the system of oppression” is really telling when that’s not a criticism made of anyone else
but the idea that jgy personally is refusing to use his power to uplift the common people is mind bogglingly dumb
i cannot emphasize enough that his primary project for the last decade has been trying to figure out how to get all of the other sects to do their fucking jobs—the jobs they were supposed to have been doing the whole time—so that poor people are less likely to be fucking murdered by monsters.
a concept, if you recall, that was so controversial, nobody questioned that a guy would kill his political opponent’s child over it.
this society balked at “do the jobs you signed up to do,” but it’s somehow jgy’s fault that change is going so slowly? fellas he’s the only one doing anything.

I think the reason lwj is so quiet around wwx is because he goes completely fucking stupid when wwx is around. Like full on no thoughts head empty (except for gay thoughts). He can’t open his mouth because he cannot predict what kind of garbled disaster of syllables will spill out if he does. Everything he says in canon has been rehearsed in his head and whispered under his breath fifteen times at minimum before he can even dare to try to say it, lest he accidentally looks into wei ying’s eyes at the wrong moment, causing him to forget everything he was just about to say and also how to walk in a straight line.
Just. Give me stupid lwj.
