Summary: Jiang YanLi didn't die on the battlefield. Wei WuXian still did. Jiang YanLi reminds Lan WangJi that he has a son and a nephew he can't abandon as he mourns.

Kay's comments: Canon-divergence series in which Jiang Yanli lives (and in later works, so does Wen Qing) and everyone has to deal with it. She becomes Lan Wangji's friend and gets to raise her son. The series is marked as incomplete, but I don't think that should deter anyone from reading, because it's definitely worth a read!

Excerpt: Tears filled his eyes when Jiang YanLi crouched in front of him, her newborn son strapped to her breast. “Hanguang Jun.” She pushed the hair out of his face, tucking strands behind his ear to look at him more clearly. She was supposed to be dead. Her death had been the reason for Wei WuXian giving up. The confusion must’ve shown in his face. He didn’t care much for controlling his emotions anymore. The ribbon was discarded somewhere. “My brothers didn’t realise I was still alive after I was stabbed -- a medic found me and brought me back to good health. When I woke, I found out…” She sobbed and Lan WangJi completely understood.

i'm a firm yanqing advocate because i deserve a little lesbianism as a treat but also because 1. jiang yanli hearing her brothers say "no man is good enough for you" and taking it to the extreme is so funny and 2. the only girl jiang cheng ever had a crush on firmly rejecting him and marrying his sister instead is even funnier

summary: Wen Qing is hired to work in the house of the Yunmeng Jiang clan following a summons for a handmaiden with medical expertise. Her charge is the lady of the house, the beautiful and subdued Jiang Yanli. Despite her ever-present smile, Wen Qing finds the lady a tough interpersonal nut to crack.

Which suits her just fine. Making friends would complicate an already sticky situation.

CHAPTER 8

It is mere days later when there is a commotion at the front gates in the early hours of the morning, so early that the sky is still nearly black. Wen Qing is woken from sleep by footsteps thundering past her door, and has scrambled out of bed and to her feet before she is even lucid. Her heart pounds as she listens and slowly realizes it is not a preemptive attack, but the skitter of anxious servants and disciples. They are all shouting over each other as they run, but she makes out just enough--the young masters have returned, and they have brought injured company.

hi em!!!! happy halloween <3 i think i talked about this on twitter and i a) don't remember what snippet i posted and b) will probably never actually finish it but please enjoy a snippet of the grief yanqing from literally two years ago

That night Yanli wakes to the brush of Wen Qing's breath, fluttering, over her eyelids. Neither of them have good sleeping posture, and in their sleep they have curled towards each other like two halves of an orange.

The air is dark and heavy on her skin as she slips from under the covers, careful not to disturb Wen Qing. Outside, the waves lap quietly at the dock as she pads out, barefoot, to dip her feet in the water. The lotuses sway, heavy heads nodding. Soon the seed pods will blacken and be ready to eat. She kicks her feet idly, enjoying the silky feel of the water between her toes, just enough cooler than the air to be refreshing. Jin Zixuan had always hated summers. In Jinlintai they were oppressive, heat trapped against the mountains in a thick wave that blanketed Koi Tower. He was always sweating through his layers, his powder clinging precariously to his face, and wiping his hand on his robes before reaching for hers. It had been endearing, to see him flustered. She had never flustered anyone before. They had planned to come to Yunmeng for Duanwu, when Jin Ling was old enough to enjoy watching the dragon boats. She had always loved the festival, had looked at the couples with children lining the river and thought, "some day that will be me, holding my child and my husband in my two hands." But she had not managed to hold on tightly enough. Behind her, Yanli hears the boards creak softly. Wen Qing has woken after all. She sits down next to Yanli, sweeping her robes out as she does so they won't crumple. "You're going to catch something out here, dipping your feet in the water," she says. Yanli pulls her feet out and waggles her toes. "That's the goal," she says. "I'm hoping for a carp." Wen Qing smacks her shoulder, laughing. "Awful," she says. They sit like that for a while, listening to the quiet hum of crickets and the rhythmic thud of the boards knocking into each other. "Do you miss him?" Wen Qing asks, finally. She has tucked her knees under herself as though she were sitting at court instead of on the wooden boards of a dock in the middle of the night. "Yes," Yanli says. "He was my husband, and I loved him." Wen Qing's jaw tightens, but she doesn't frown.

Yanli twists her hands together. "We had a life together," she continues. "I won't pretend it was perfect." Her mouth twists. Koi Tower had felt like balancing on the edge of a knife, every room she entered heavy with secrets. "But he cared for me, and I cared for him." She looks at Wen Qing, at the lean lines of her face in the half-reflected moonlight. "Does that bother you?" "No," Wen Qing says. "Or– yes, but not–" she sighs. "Your husband's family killed the family I gave everything in me to save," she says, bluntly. "I don't think there's a way around that." Jiang Yanli smiles, rueful. "Well," she says. She gestures at Lotus Pier, the boardwalks and bridges, the buildings squat and low over the water, all rebuilt in the last 15 years. Wen Qing nods her head, acknowledging the hit. She leans over, resting her head on Yanli's shoulder, a steady weight. The fine bones of her face dig in a little at Yanli's collarbone, but Yanli doesn't shift. Wen Qing has never been a comfortable person to care for. She doesn't mind.
