i discovered stardew valley mods pretty early on playing (but i think i already finished the community center by then) and it irreversibly changed my experience and i still can't tell if it was for the worse or not. like i used the cjb item spawner to get so much gold and got endgame items with it... a few years later i would use the same cheat commands on the same save to have. less gold. to actually have to work towards goals

#spud.txt #idk if this is terribly interesting #the recent update broke a lot of mods and i took the chance to cut down on mods. if not counting content packs like reskinning stuff i only #have 25 mods #counting everything i now have 85 when it used to be 200+ #when 1.5 happened i actually used cjb to spawn in all the clothing items. and then json assets broke all the custom clothing i had in 1.6 #so i threw away the whole closet and turns out actually tailoring the clothes is so much more enjoyable... #it's so easy and tempting to bypass game challenges using mods like you can freeze time in caves and clear 100 desert floors that way #this isn't a dig against modding though i just wish i got into it later in my sdv career so i would leave some challenges for myself #mods can add new content like locations and characters and dungeons it's really neat #the update also got me thinking about. all the modding drama that went down. and turns out it was at least 3 whole years ago #idk the minute details but i think it started with sdv expanded who got caught including other people's mod content in paywalled files #this spread to nexusmods and partially sdv discord mods who defended the sdve author #and then nexusmods did the whole mod collection thing that threatened to zombify people's mods even if they took their stuff down #this led to a mass exodus from nexusmods and to moddrop #i think a lot of people have gone back to nexus though i wonder what happened #i feel so old...

yeah! so for stardew mods to work you need to first install the smapi api.

you can either do that through their main website or nexus

neither option has any cons theyre just based on preference on how you wanna install it but theyre both completely safe websites.

after you properly install smapi you’ll have to go to nexus which is the main website for all stardew valley mods. you’ll need to make an account to install stuff i believe. you can find a wide range of mods here that serve a lot of different purposes.

if you haven’t used nexus to mod before then as i mentioned before first make an account then once you are looking at a mod make sure to check the requirements first. sometimes mods need other mods to work and you need to install those first. after you checked the requirements you head to the files section and click manual download. after that select slow download then wait for it to install into your files. then you move those files into the stardew mod folder. if thats not clear enough you can find a bunch of tutorial videos on youtube with visuals:)

since you asked for my recs i’ll give you the list of which i actually use all the time.

NPC Map Locations

- very basic mod. majority of mod users will have this installed and it just shows you on the map where each npc is at at all times.

CJB Cheats Menu & CJB Item Spawner

- these two sorta go hand in hand for me but of course you don’t need to have both installed. this is definitely a play style preference thing but i personally like having these cheats installed for any type of situation that might happen in game that i can’t undo otherwise without them.

- the cheats menu adds a lot more flexibility and well cheats to the game so for instance: infinite health, infinite stamina, give yourself money, instantly increase hearts with whichever npc, always catch every fish, warp locations, change weather, change time, freeze time, and a lot more. this uses the P key to open in game but you can configure that to another bind if you’d like.

- the item spawner is a lot more simple. does what it says and spawns whichever item you want. so basically you can press the i key and it’ll open up a menu with every item in the game and you can spawn in the specific amount you want of something and so forth. simple concept. i mainly use this for when i accidentally sell or gift an item i wasnt intending to and then simply spawn it back in. i also use it for decorating my house:3

Look Up Anything

- this is literally like having the wiki at your disposal at all times in game. extremely helpful for so many reasons especially as i personally always had the wiki open to check for information on items and npcs so having this mod made it a lot quicker of a process. how it works is you simply hover your mouse over whatever you want information on and click f1 and it’ll display all the information about that thing to you! so if you hover over lets say harvey and press f1 it’ll show you a menu with his birthday, his love & like gifts, your hearts with them and how many points till the next heart, etc.

Seasonal Outfits

- this mod puts all the npcs in different outfits for the seasons. its just cute

Elle’s Seasonal Buildings & DaisyNiko’s Earthy Recolor

- the seasonal building allows a lot more variety in structures like farm building and adding holiday decor to npc buildings. simple stuff that can make the game more customized

- with seasonal buildings you can also install compatible recolors which is what the DaisyNiko’s link is. it’s the recolor i personally use for my main farm when i play. this is because the vanilla game is very saturated and does hurt my eyes so having more chilled out tones helps. you dont need to install the recolor i use or any in fact if you like the natural look of the game but just know the option is there and there’s a multitude of recolors you can use to make the game look different:3

Friends Forever

- no friendship decay because itsa pain in the ass and i have no time to talk to the npcs all day. this is very play style based some people enjoy having to go and ensure they speak to npcs daily im just not the type.

Part of The Community

- creates different ways for you to gain hearts easier and passively

Mailbox Menu & Zilch’s Envelopes

- i really like the letters and the fact you can only read them once bummed me out until i found this mod which adds a whole menu for your mail where you can go back and see all the letters you’ve received. feel like it adds that additional touch and care to the whole mail system in the game.

- then to go along with that menu theres the envelopes mod that customizes it even further and makes all the envelopes of the letters have cute appearances and designs. look at this and tell me that isn’t the best thing you’ve ever seen.

in conclusion…

I really suggest just taking the time and scrolling through the nexus mods website on your own. they have a specific category for stardew and you can filter it by most popular and see what you find yourself. since everyone plays differently you might find you enjoy the more technical code side and want to change something to do with that or you might just simply wanna change the npc portraits and make them look nicer. theres so many options on how to mod this game and i honestly could go on forever with mod suggestions but at the end of the day its up to you! so hope this helps and i hope you have a fun time modding.

I changed my Meadowlands Farm plan, and hopefully this time, it's final 😅 You can see how the old plan looked like here.

Here's the thing about planning: You can make the prettiest farm, and everything might look right, but it's only after you play in it that you actually see if things are working right. I can't have something that just looks good in my eyes, it needs to be functional, otherwise I just stop playing. Then again, I haven't done this in my actual save, so there could still be some things that still need to be changed for the sake of my sanity, but let's hope this is it.

I encountered 5 main problems with my original design:

Furnaces (too far away from crafting area);

Tree Farm with hidden mushroom logs (too many different trees close to each other, means worse mushroom outcomes);

Junimo Area (cute but useless);

Artisan Machines outside (it's more practical to have them inside, next to the Deluxe Grabber);

Bee Houses are better at Ginger Island.

ALSO, I completely forgot about the desert obelisk. So yeah, the first plan had a lot of issues...

The mod list as changed as well. It's a lot longer now (literally), I wanted to make the text "Indented" (make the space between each paragraph smaller), but tumblr wouldn't let me 😩

what mods do you plan on playing with?

ok so im a pretty heavily modded kind of person. i dont know when to stop, i know of many mods i adore for sdv, and i have about 11 pages of view by 20 tracked mods i would like to put in my 1.6 save. that's quite a lot... i don't think i'll use all, i'm sure many won't work, and i'll change my mind on a few... i do wanna try and be more vanilla this time so less gameplay altering mods.. i tend to go heavy on qol... i love alternative texture mods so much so lots of those.

i plan on making a list of every mod i am using and sharing that with everyone when i'm finished modding for my 1.6 save.. i'll likely make it a tumblr page and share it as im working on it so people can add what i currently have then check for new additions.. it will not be finished today. as far as i know there are some mod authors who want a week or two to push their mod update fully, but will get code updates in asap and i'm unsure exactly what i wanna do there..

like for example diverse stardew valley is a mod i wanna use this time for sure.. the code will be updated either today or tomorrow, but the art won't be for a week or two or three iirc. and i know for a fact that they're adding my favourite harvey mod to it officially (which is pour-over sweater) and i REALLY want to see that yknow... it'll probably work on an existing save i don't see any reason why i wouldn't. but i am also insane and might be willing to wait an extra few weeks just to see harvey in a sweater. this is the kind of person i am

ui info suite 2 - i literally can't play without this. 6 hours ago they dropped an alpha for 1.6, so i'm feeling hopeful they'll be ready soon for a full 1.6 release!

thunder and frogs sounds - dare i inform you that the weird frog sounds during thunderstorms in stardew valley scares me more than playing a silent hill game? cuz it does. it really does. MANDATORY mod for me, and updated for 1.6 already. i literally told the author about the 1.6 changes to modding and he jumped on it immediately to update this mod. you can all thank me hehehe

cjb cheats menu / item spawner - cheat mods that i think everyone should have ngl. esp the cheats menu. like cheats menu is so full of STUFF u can even just use it to make ur walking speed faster. its so fucking handy and perfect. and i like item spawner cuz man sometimes i just wanna spawn a fucking rug for my house. i don't fucking care

lookup anything - this should be a vanilla functionality imo. fucking wiki in the game. perfect mod. no notes. get it

event lookup - basically the same as above but so u can see what u need to get an event and where it is and shit. fuck looking up the wiki to see where someones 5 heart event cuz u havent triggered it. turns out it needs fucking 11pm rain in the woods or some shit fuck sake.....

chests anywhere - to me this is just a beautiful, BEAUTIFUL quality of life mod. i dont wanna run around to fuck to find shit. all there at the press of a button. u can even balance it if u dont wanna tempt urself to use it in the mines or w/e

i'll stop there but i literally will definitely have these. and i think everyone should highkey or lowkey idk. i love them ^_^

I FINALLY DID IT!!!!!

holy shit i'm so happy. the ending at the summit almost made me cry. anyway look at my farm and stuff:

my house. took this screen shot in like spring year 4 but nothing really changed. yes i chose Alex i was using a platonic relationships mod so he got his own room. he was my bestie and would sometimes give me pancakes

island farm. didn't do much decorating wise, but i really love the path i made from the parrot express to the main farm

aaaaaand the ginger island house! decorating this one was super fun

final play time came in at: 182 hours 53 minutes

the only mods i used that changed game play other than platonic relationships and platonic partners and friends were:

CJB cheats menu, which i mainly used so i could walk slightly faster(i've done my time) and to pause time while i was fiddling with the furniture and stuff.

anyway i'm never doing that again. now i'm going to go change up my mods and get crazy with it. maybe continue SVE, maybe try the ridgeside village mod, who knows? :)

I decided I needed a new challenge but didn't want to just add more and more NPCs to try to befriend, so instead I'm using some mods that make the farmer's life much harder.

Farmer Luca's first couple of weeks in the valley include highlights like actually drinking the Joja Cola they fished out of the river, and that one time they looked Andy straight in the eye and ate a live minnow. Also Luca developed a crush on Gus at the Egg Festival and now I'm disappointed that I can't find a 'Romance Gus' mod anywhere. Writing fanfic time again, I guess.

Edit: wait I found one called 'Looking For Love' that says it makes the other NPCs romanceable. Luca's crush might not go unrequited after all.

You have a serious point there about the way shitkickers using CJB's rhetoric style poison the shipping well for fans. It spurs hardcore Bee-exclusive types to entrench deeper (and with this for context holy shit can I sympathize), it discourages peeps who might otherwise have fun exploring poly dynamics through headcanons/fic, and don't get me fucking started on the way it shuts out non-cis queer fans in general.

The homophobes scream and shit their pants anytime either Blake or Yang exist within arm's reach of another woman, Bumbleby shippers understandably get tired of that shit, some of them respond badly, and then the shitheads who provoked it in the first place cry victim and act like their bigotry is justifiable. Then both sides create an echo chamber and try to drive out anyone who doesn't toe the line precisely.

Let me be clear, I'm on the side of the Bumbleby shippers here. The homophobes can go fuck themselves, and I'm personally tired of people reaching for the flimsiest of ways to try to deny that Yang and Blake have feelings for each other, and lord knows I've made it clear by now that I think most of the common criticisms leveled at the show are fucking stupid, but man does this fandom have an issue with criticism and dissent.

Look, RWBY's not a great show. It's above average at best. It's had moments that make (or made, my opinion has soured somewhat recently) me think it could be great, and its highs are pretty high, but its lows are really fucking low. There are a lot of valid and legitimate criticisms to be had of this show. That said, years of morons flinging shit at every choice that RWBY has made make it very hard to voice any of that sort of criticism and find a receptive audience.

This manifests with regard to Bumbleby in particular as a defense mechanism because anyone who likes the ship has probably spent years dealing with the people whose hatred for it is virulent and visceral, so good luck pointing out that you like other ships, whether in place of or in addition to Bumbleby. Point out that you think Freezerburn or Ladybug are cute? Someone will jump down your throat (and God forbid you ship either Blake or Yang with a male character for any reason).

Not that the idiots like the one in the tweet that prompted this ask are in any way better, you're absolutely right that this "everyone must be strictly heterosexual (exceptions can be made for sapphic women as long as they only ever express their sexuality in ways designed strictly to titillate men) or the writing is bad" bullshit excludes anyone who enjoys ships that aren't strictly heteronormative or who happens to be queer in any capacity. Half the people shitting on Bumbleby would rather queer people didn't exist in any capacity, much less participate in fandom spaces.

I feel like I may have lost the thread a little bit here. I'm exhausted, frustrated, and in a very shitty mood at the moment, so forgive me for the fact that my thoughts are all over the place.
