maybe this is me stating the obvious because i'm ten years late to the party again, but the more i think about it, the more i realise gifting/burdening ashildr with immortality was a time lord victorious moment straight out of waters of mars, not a true gesture of kindness like the decision to save the pompeiian family – despite his attempt to absolve himself of guilt and to "logic" himself into believing that these situations are analogous, that this is the only right thing to do. why do i think so? well, because for starters he practically phrases it like a challenge: "i'm the Doctor, i save people, and if anyone up there who's listening has any sort of problem with that..."

it's a declaration of rebellion, right? the kindness aspect is present, yes, absolutely, but it stems from selfishness too: above everything, it comes from a desire to prove (to Clara and himself and anybody that's listening) that he's still the Doctor. if he had genuinely been acting rationally, if his intentions had been purely altruistic, he would never have subjected a young teenager to immortality without her consent or knowledge, tearing her away from everyone she loves, especially being as painfully aware of the loneliness it can bring as he is.

sure he gives her the second patch in a hurry, after looking at clara no doubt, but does he explain anything? does he even bother to tell ashildr the truth? no, — the most important reason behind this action was winning a debate with himself and imaginary past/future enemies. that's why it backfires. that's why he visits her only on a scant few occasions over 800 years, that's why he watches her from afar but never dares come close until a coincidence brings them together.

it's not even a jack situation: she's functionally immortal because of alien technology, not divine badwolf vortex-magic. she's not a fixed point. he could visit her anytime, but he doesn't, because ashildr's a living breathing representation of his guilt, walking the earth and never finding peace. a reminder of his tendency to run from the fallout of his rash decisions.

basically, as i said before, it's totally a victor frankenstein predicament. you created a monster out of hubris, brought it back from the dead, then turned and ran from your creation, ashamed of the surrogate child you fathered. the creature you assembled. they're your responsibility now. tough.

just found out my cousin (who lives in England) is in the art department of a bunch of shows??? And she worked oN DOCTOR WHO? AND HAD LUNCH WITH DAVID TENNANT???? and she just told me so casually because she's interested in the art, not the show? I mean, excuse me? She worked on SHERLOCK???? FOR A WHOLE SEASON?? She worked on Peaky Blinders and Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones??? And probably other things because she has a shitty memory and according to her everything is a blur?? AND AT ONE POINT SHE WAS LIKE: "oh and have you ever heard of Neil Gaiman?" And I was trying not to scream, because yes, of course I've heard of Neil, he's only my favorite author, I've only read like all of his books multiple times, and if you say you worked on Good Omens or the Sandman I'm going to lose it completely. So I said "yeah I've read a couple of his books," -you know, like a liar- "what about him?" and she goes "well I worked on one of his shows and he's brilliant i just can't remember which one" and i go "w-what do you mean he's brilliant? You're.. you're talking about his writing... his writing is brilliant, right?" And she cheerfully says "oh no I don't read books, I ment he was really nice and brilliant when I talked to him" and i go "WHAT DID YOU TALK ABOUT WHAT DID YOU TALK ABOUT" and she thinks for a moment and goes "oh! BRICKS" WHAT IN THE WORLD YES NO THAT MAKES SENSE YOU GET TO WORK AND TALK WITH NEIL FUCKING GAIMAN AND YOU TALK ABOUT BRICKS? NO THAT'S TOTALLY NORMAL I'M NOT MAD ".... it was what I was designing at the time, I needed to know what vibe the bricks should have. Anyway want to see the spinning fireplace I made for doctor who" WHAT THE FUCK.

Ten and Donna end up on a fucked up deadly space newlyweds show despite uh. Not being newlyweds but they get almost all the questions right. They start to sweat when the final question is "what's one secret desire you have involving the other?" And Donna writes "sometimes I wish I could occasionally shrink down the doctor real small so I could carry him around in my pocket and make sure he doesn't get lost' while Ten writes "sometimes I wish I was small enough that Donna could carry me around in like a cat backpack or maybe a shirt pocket" and they look at each other like AYYYYYY because not only are they deeply drift compatible they're also fuckin weird about it 💖

The ninth doctor was so insane fr he was like I watched my planet get destroyed and I can't share this trauma with anyone. I will fix this by befriending a human girl and taking her to see her planet get destroyed. This is normal behaviour.
