so like. keating; let's talk about that

we desperately need to acknowledge that keating is an amazing man right down to his core. he is so passionate about living life in a way that makes him feel fulfilled that he makes it his main goal to teach others how to do the same.

he experienced the same exact thing as the poets, remember, the movie makes a big deal of how nothing at welton changes. he had the same exact oppressive environment growing up as they did, so he knew exactly how to connect to these boys.

HIS INTENTIONS AND ACTIONS WERE NOTHING BUT PURE, AND THATS WHAT MAKES HIS ENDING ALL THE MORE DEVASTATING.

every single one of his peers and superiors fully believed that neil's death was keatings fault, and actively shunned him for it. not a singular person that wasnt a Teenager in his community understood what he was trying to do. welton painted the narrative that keating taught these insane useless lessons about breaking the rules BUT NEED! I! REMIND! YOU! HE MADE A PRETTY BIG EMPHASIS ON THE FACT THAT U GOTTA BE SMART ABT IT! he called out charlie for the call from god thing for a reason!!

another crazy devastating thing abt keating + neils death is the fact that neil was understanding exactly what carpe diem mean's IMMEDIATELY. AND WAS ACTING ON IT!! he pursued things that he knew would make him happy and fulfilled in the long run, he knew what he wanted to do with his life and he took the first opportunity to get it. the exact fucking definition of seizing the day. keating was REACHING THIS KID SO WELL!! HE WAS UNDERSTANDING EXACTLY WHAT HE WAS SAYING!!! AND THEN!!! AND THEN!!!!!!!!!!

so imagine this. you grow up in the most rigid, boring, unchanging environment and decide fuck it, im gonna Do Something for Myself for Once. you start to think oh, this is actually kinda sick, doing things that make me happy. you escape the environment that aims to essentially make these Children into what their idea of successful is. (quick reminder that there are actual children also attending welton. like kids. like 9 year olds n shit.) you actually chase after every opportunity to be what your idea of successful is, and were so passionate about that way of living that you learned how to teach others how to do it. and also poetry and stuff.

so youre doing exactly that, you finally got to a point where youre doing exactly what you wanna do, and teaching these kids in a situation just like yours. and its going SO WELL! there's this one kid who just GETS IT and is doing it flawlessly and then - oh !

and now everyone around you is like um wtf this is your fault actually. SO YOU HAVE TO PROCESS THE FACT THAT YOUR STUDENT IS DEAD ON TOP OF HAVING TO RELIVE THE ENVIRONMENT YOU HATED AND ACTIVELY WORKED AGAINST YOUR ENTIRE LIFE. AND NOW YOU HAVE NO INCOME OR COMMUNITY OR HOME OR FRIENDS. AND THE ONLY PEOPLE THAT KNOW YOU ARENT A MURDERER ARE UNDER THE AGE OF 18. AND YOUR WIFE LIVES IN ANOTHER COUNTRY. OH AND ALSO YOUR RESUME IS RUINED AND ITLL PROBABLY BE PRETTY HARD TO FIND ANOTHER JOB IF YOU CAN AT ALL.

AND YOU HAVE CANCER. HE HAS CANCER IN THE OG SCRIPT.

keating is my personal description of raw devastation. all of who you are and what you wanted to be is in shambles because of something that isnt your fault. but almost everyone around you thinks it is your fault. and we're just gonna move on from that? thats it? thats the end of the story? no more keating after that?????? downright evil. more people gotta talk about this wonderful man!!!!!

Reader would definitely be a big fan of Minghao's works, they've collected almost every series that Minghao has published. Including special limited edition books other collectors would KILL for.

I have a feeling minghao would hide his face, sure he'd attend a few interviews but the interviewer would only be able to hear his voice, this was intentional ofcourse. Minghao wanted to go out in peace, he never wants interviewers and paparazzi to swarm him whenever he stepped out of his house. It's annoying to him. He only revealed his face to trusted individuals like his publisher. Other than that almost no one has seen his face, But there are times where he has almost gotten caught due to his distinctive voice, but he just argued that he has a similar voice and swear he isn't him.

Reader and Minghao would definitely run into each other by accident, of course reader doesn't know shit and thinks is just some random person they bumped into well... " What's the rush? " Minghao asks.

You tried to refuse but minghao didn't budge, eventually you gave up. " Im the reason why you're late, this is my apology. Haha ur fucked now minghao. Your eyes widened when he said this, you just connected the dots... Bye this is so embarrassing all this time you've been ranting about minghao to minghao

Minghao eventually came clean and he did confess it but, he made it very sure that you wouldn't tell ANYONE about it, well maybe also minghao had a tiny bit of feelings for you but thats beside the point... he trusted you enough to keep this a secret and you swore you'd take this secret to the grave.

Minghaos "little crush" never left tho! He waited awhile before confessing, like maybe 5 months... you were a bit oblivious to his feelings but eventually you started to catch feelings too... the confession was so sweet tho, he took quotes from your favorite book of his. And made a little love letter, you cried on the spot and hugged him so tightly.

it just with how Ga-Ming is described it sounds very similar ,obviously I would rather they be friends first but if not the angst please.

So to add on ap, chongyun’s Yang state has a variation of responses, he has tame ones like in the poetry event those are fine. It’s the chaotic ones that are a problem “he chases people around, passed out,danced on top of furniture, broken furniture, and gotten injured and he sometimes doesn’t even remember himself being in Yang state.

and then when all is said and done he still get’s told that he’s entertainment(a sign in wangshu btw), that his Yang state is the real him and the fact that his friends always seem to be giving him chilis because they think that his Yang side is better for him.

Then here comes Ga-Ming he’s good at fighting , he can dance and perform all he wants, he’s happy and cheerful without consequences, he uses a claymore, he admires Xiao as well, he’s probably friends with his own friends.

a big slap in the face that tells him “ hey, you know that Yang side of you that causes you a lot of trouble personally, yeah well seems that they prefer you that way” and boom the angst

Now I obviously I don’t think chongyun’s friends are *that mean or that they even have bad intentions but it’s always personally bothered me the language they use around him and about him idk it always feels insensitive. Not only that but the disregard of his own feelings and boundaries always bothered me. Doesn’t help that his Yang and anything related to chilis is meant for jokes. But c’mon Xiangling’s job is literally a chef her whole job is meant to be making food, she can scold people for being picky but she sometimes puts chilis in her friends food even though he can pass out like where’s the logic. At least she makes him his popsicles. this includes hu Tao also like she is a prankster and all but she takes her job seriously and one of the things she has to do is keep the balance of yin and Yang so like you’d think she’d be like “hey my friend having a pure Yang body is probably not a good thing but nah let’s prank him even though he clearly doesn’t like)

like c’mon he’s just asking for no chilis in his food it’s not hard

anyway that’s my idea basically it can also happen the opposite way with Ga-Ming being a friend who does respect his boundaries(please just one friend) and still finds way to include him in events without triggering his Yang so Chongyun hangs out with him which leads to other’s self reflection. so yeah that’s all I have.

HI, I'm just wondering where you get your drabble prompts from? 3000+ works that's INSANE but where do you get the ideas? if they're just random word generators I've done that, but I don't know how you can write so much and Im wondering if you have like pages with good prompts? love your work sm

Hi, thanks!

The prompts I use really are just random words, tbh. I found an old database for the Oxoniensis fanfiction “Porn Battle” challenge from 2013, stripped the fandoms and pairings from the requests, searched and removed all of the duplicate prompts, and randomized the whole rest of the challenge prompts to come up with a list of 13,000+ prompts. Then I just chopped that humongo list down into 100-prompt lists that I keep in an Excel file. I've got enough 100-prompt lists in there to last me YEARS, even if I were still writing at the pace that I was in 2022 (maybe soon. Hopefully soon).

I have noticed that there are some duplicate words that Excel missed stripping because of US versus UK spelling (or typos) but that’s OK. :) I just swap the duplicate word out of the list with something on my desk, usually -- which is why there are prompts for, like, "paint" and "seltzer" and "thread," haha.

I have put a couple of list tables up on my Tumblr on this page, so as long as you credit where you found them (because it did take time to strip, organize, and randomize the lists) you’re free to use them!

As for connecting the random word to an idea -- that's why it's helpful to have people request a pairing with the prompt, and it's SUPER helpful to have a really wide array of pairings/fandoms I'll write. I think if I tried to fill every prompt with the same pairing, I would run out of steam really quickly.

I also like to take prompts in the least expected direction that I can a lot of the time, which is why prompts like "domme" or "finger" will be totally gen, and something LIKE "paint" or "thread" might be smutty. Or if a word has multiple definitions, I try to use one of the less-common ones. I also, personally, try to come up with ideas that are canon-compliant or canon-adjacent as much as I possibly can because that's the kind of fic I prefer, and I think having that boundary helps me to come up with ideas, too. Like how would "seltzer" fit into the actual canon for Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries, or Marvel, or Star Wars, or whatever? Sometimes that takes a little research to answer, and then that births an idea.

I like drabbles, one-word prompts, and canonfic all because they are boundaries and formats that help me, personally, come up with ideas more easily. I think if I tried to open up those boundaries and just write ANYTHING I WANTED I would freeze up and not be able to write anything at all. (Which is why I'm the world's slowest longfic writer, haha.)

I am a big fan of writing to formats and with boundaries of the form. I think it definitely helps get ideas flowing if you know that you only have a certain amount of room to fill. This is why I don't understand free-verse poetry.

hey anon! thanks for reaching out, hm...honestly, i struggle with liking my own work too, i guess we're all our own biggest critics :( and i can only speak from my own experience so my word isn't law haha but ive compiled some of my thoughts on this + some citations i think could help add perspective:

read as much as you can and study the writing you like: goes a very long way. if you like distinctive styles of writing like with prose and such then find writers who are known for that, off the top of my head—proust, joyce, brontë, tolstoy, cervantes, etc etc. but always explore, read non-fiction, read a script, read poetry. analyze themes, characters, dialogue ...or don’t? sometimes reading is an experience, not mental gymnastics, but take in how you feel about the stuff you read and digest them.

observe: listen to conversations around you, the way people talk and react to things, the way they interact with one another. expressing and repressing. or watch films, what do images and scenes look like in your mind. i learned a lot about transitions and flow from movies. take things from the world around you. find what inspires you to write? i usually listen to music!

characters: if writing fanfic is your thing then take the time to think about the characters, their motives, desires, weaknesses, etc etc. read the source material or read hcs and form your own opinion.

(finding the balance between vomiting out descriptions and knowing when to leave things as they are is a struggle for me haha, i get caught up way too much on crafting atmosphere when all the scene calls for is like a sentence or two... i guess its about knowing which is more important, keeping in mind pacing and such too. but im a big believer in instinct, you’ll know whats better for a scene when you read it like fifty times and think... 'maybe geto’s internal monologue and a valid ‘heart beating wildly in his chest’ is enough..’) <3

re: writing styles: ultimately has to do with your personality and how you see the world/the scene you're conveying to an audience. i suppose style stems from the way you weave and thread words together, how you place one word after the other. i think it’ll come to you the more you write, rather than aiming for style, start with the story and the way you look at things.

A unique and exact way of looking at things, and finding the right context for expressing that way of looking, that’s something else. . . . Every great, or even every very good writer, makes the world over according to his own specifications. It’s akin to style,... but it isn’t style alone. It is the writer’s particular and unmistakable signature on everything he writes. It is his world and no other. This is one of the things that distinguishes one writer from another. — From “A Storyteller’s Shoptalk,” by Raymond Carver published in The New York Times in 1981.

let your writing be something else, just not yours (in the best sense): sometimes the hardest thing is knowing that your writing will forever be tied to you, there’s a sense of ownership there, like a mother who’s birthed a child after a whole nine months, you’ll work on something for the longest time and not want to give it to anyone, but it has to sort of...get out there. and not every piece of writing will be a precious baby, sometimes it’s just an onion in your garden you found and thought to use in a stew, but the point is that eventually, it’ll belong to the world should you choose to post it. letting it go is catharsis. when i don’t have to look back on it, i can just write the next thing. even if you don’t intend on posting it, i find that i could always just leave things in the drafts, in a document folder, in scraps of paper, and move on to the next thing. i know i can always come back to it. 

i guess...you just have to write? one word after the next until you’ve filled up a page or more. the difference between crafting a beautiful sentence you’re satisfied with and a repetitive, simple one is a whole lot of trial and error + practice (and suffering).

“The only sentence that matters is the one you’re writing.” Do not look ahead two or three sentences, thinking, Oh, but wait, I have to get through two or three more of these sentences before I can get to the really good stuff. Make the sentence you are at the place you are at, and make it a place of stone and steel, not a place of sand and clay. Fashion this sentence out of what has gone before on your page, always moving forward by looking back. Turn, swerve, torque and twist upon what you have written, finding new ways to render your object, and through these maneuvers, finding the way to write your heart out. — From 'The Gordon Lish Notes' by Tetman Callis. eventually, you’ll look at the stuff you hate and find ways to make it better, and even then maybe you won’t be completely happy with it but i think it’s important to note that it’s a rather harrowing thing because you’re staring at it wondering if it’s something to be shared...that’s a lot. ultimately i feel it’s perfectly fine to write because you enjoy it, of course, some might say it doesn’t have to be perfect, but because you want it to be good, there needs to be a sense of care and responsibility to make it so. 

You write as well as you can and hope for good readers. But I think you’re also writing for other writers to an extent—the dead writers whose work you admire, as well as the living writers you like to read. I miss hearing you play. I recently picked up that small guitar Tubbs used to play- the ukelele?? I get why you like it so much now, it is fun to just..make noise. Makes people look at you. Which is honestly a very fun dynamic !!! Vincent being the slightly more compitent one trying to bring in normalcy and Brahms being the slightly more awkward but also restrained one?

012.    story  behind  url :    i think it's quite obvious and very unoriginal ,,, but i'll talk about it anyway! law- is for the fact mat is, well, a detective. he doesn't show this off too much in the show and i don't think it's the biggest part of his character, but it's important nonetheless, since roles in etn are important. also his whole boner for justice ( when it works for him ) also contributes to that law- part. -rising is thanks to the lazarus harp, and shows mat's revival! he was risen from the grave so. yeah!

- spent a good portion of my childhood conceptualizing myself as either a possessed child or the ghost doing the possessing, my memory of which perspective it was changed from time to time?

- for a long time was insecure about my Big Trauma™ event bc my memories of it are from a third person perspective looking down on my actual self as its happening, meaning it feels disconnected from me therefore does that mean that it didnt actually traumatize me? was it actually not traumatizing and i just tell people it was because i want attention?

- that above thing was also a huge stumbling block in my did consideration as well bc "it feels like it didnt happen to /me/, therefore can that count as a big enough trauma to cause it? i mean if it happened to someone else then it couldnt have traumatized ME enough to cause that" aka "i cant have the 'i went through such a horrible trauma that my brain invented someone else for it to happen to' disorder because my horrible trauma feels like it happened to someone else, so checkmate"

- have incredibly shit memory of most of my life but especially everything before graduation and /especially/ early childhood

- have had a lot of convos w my bf that boil down to "you said this" "no i didnt" "yes you did" "i dont remember that"

- have been fully considering my "autopilot" as a seperate being for well over a year now

- have made jokes about "yeah no, /i/ dont know how to drive, its more like my body knows how to drive! thats why im not worried when I zone out while driving is bc i spent most of the learning process zoned out as well, so zoned-out me learned how to drive instead of focused me, yknow? like to the point tbh where i actually feel like i drive worse if im actively forcing myself to pay attention, haha isnt that wild?"
