“Spencer.” It was a low whine as she slipped onto the couch next to him, arms wrapping around his left.
“Yes love?” She just merely grumbled into his arm as she snuggled closer to his body, if there was even any space to fill. He noticed almost instantly though how warm she was, a particular shine to the surface of her face, her complexion redder than it was this morning.
“I’m sleepy.” Were the next words he could actually understand from her. Running a hand over her forehead to smooth back her hair, he placed a kiss near the corner of her hairline that wasn’t pressed against his arm, only building more evidence to his suspicion.
“How long were you in the sun for?”
“Not that long.”
“And how much water did you drink?” Her body stilled next to him despite his fingers now searching for hers. “Did you even take water with you?”
“I didn’t have any way to hold it, and then the bugs would’ve gotten to it and-” She was starting to whine as she pulled her excuses from memory. Her excuses were never unbelievable as she was normally a very logical person, but he also wasn’t so surprised to hear that this one time she forgot a vital piece of self care.
“The UV index was a high 8, almost 9. You should’ve brought your water.”
“Yeah, well I didn’t.” Had it been anyone else, he would be mad. The stubborn attitude and simultaneous surrender would’ve made him mad over such a reckless action. But when he looked down to the girl next to him, her eyelids threatening to close and obstruct his view, he crumbled with just that look alone.
“That’s why you’re tired. You know that, right?” His other hand reached over to her, the pad of his thumb brushing over her cheekbone as she leaned into his touch, squeezing his arm.
“Explain it to me?” Arms that had once wrapped around his own were now working towards his waist, Spencer instinctively raising the arm to rest behind her, fingers trailing up and down her back.
“When you’re in the sun, your body is pushing all of its resources to keep you cool in such an extreme heat. Meaning, any water your body has access to is being pushed away from the reserves that may still need it to keep you cool but that is also where you start to sweat out any of that water. So not only is your body introducing itself to fatigue by dehydration, but also in an effort to thermoregulate itself, it-” He would’ve kept going. He could’ve gone on about how the neural processors work to tell your body that it’s overheating and fatigued and how all of these things snowball into making you tired, despite your body's internal workings to stay awake in light. But he never got the chance, his words stopped by the soft snores let out beside him, the sound like a finger laid over his lips telling him to be quiet.
Rolling his eyes, he reached over to place one more kiss to her hairline before deciding maybe what they both needed was a nap. And that he could explain it all to her once she woke up again.

You’re sitting in your bed, reading a magazine, when your flip phone rings. You lean forward to pick it up from the corner of the bed, wondering who could be calling you this late. You raise your eyebrows when you see that it’s Lola. You haven’t spoken to her since school got out. Nevertheless, you answer it and put the phone up to your ear.
“Lola! Hey,” You grin. “Oh my God, I’m so glad you picked up. I’m so bored around here,” She groans, and you smile even bigger at the sound of her voice on the other end. “Around where?” You ask curiously.
“My parents’. I have to babysit my younger sister all the time. It’s exhausting, really,” She moans. “I just want to like, go to a party or something. Honestly, I would even prefer to be going to classes right now instead of this.”
“Wow. That must mean it’s really bad then, huh?” You continue flipping through the magazine, your eyes scanning through the apparently trending fashion and makeup choices at the moment.
“Yes. Ugh. You’re at Saltburn, right?” She asks. “Yeah.” You reply.
“How’s that going?” Lola questions, and you hear another voice in the background that sounds like her, only higher-pitched. “No, I’m on the phone. Go away. Shoo,”
You try not to snicker at her shooing away her little sister. “It’s…” You trail off, trying to decide the right way to describe how the summer is going so far for you. “I don’t know. Different.”
“How so?” You pause and wonder if you should tell her what’s been going on. You decide it’s probably better not to and keep some things to yourself.
“I think it’s just cause we’re growing up. I mean, we graduate in less than two years.” You shrug and reach over to grab your glass of wine. “Oh God, don’t remind me. My parents are still asking me what my plans are,” She sighs loudly.
“I can’t believe it.” You shake your head and close the magazine, uninterested in the latest celebrity drama. An idea suddenly forms in your mind.
“Hey, the Cattons are throwing one of their big summer parties in a few days. I could invite you?” You suggest. You hear Lola gasp. “Really?! I’d love to go. I’ve heard so many stories about the Saltburn parties.” She makes it sound so dramatic, and you giggle.
“And you’d get a chance to see Felix,” You grin as you hear her jumping around. “Yeah, I would! You don’t need to convince me any further. I’ll be there,” She pauses. “Wait, but they’ll let me come, right?”
“Oh, of course. They like me a lot, so I’m sure they won’t mind.” You assure her. “Okay, perfect. Thank you so much, my love. I’ll let you get some sleep. See you soon!” She squeals excitedly and you roll your eyes with a smile as she hangs up.
You set down your phone and sigh, looking around your dim room.
You haven’t been able to get Farleigh out of your mind since your little… moment two nights ago. He’s not avoiding you, but he’s not being nice either. He’s gone back to teasing you and embarrassing you in front of the Cattons. You should’ve known that if you got too close, he’d pull away and return to his old ways.
But every little glance you two share has your stomach fluttering and your heart pounding. Every insult meant to hurt or offend you has the opposite effect. In some depraved way, you like when he degrades you. The past two nights, you’ve laid awake and stared up at the ceiling, trying to relive that night when he made you feel so good. Just the thought of him had your mind reeling. You would do anything just to feel that way again. You’re hooked.
You can’t just keep wallowing in these feelings. You want to talk to him, work things out, and go back to how they used to be a week ago. More importantly, you just want to be in his presence. It gives you some kind of thrill to be around him. It’s like a game of roulette to see which version of him you’ll get each time, and you love it. You crave his attention.
You climb off of your large bed and walk determinedly to your door, opening it quietly and sneaking down the hallway. It’s quite a long walk to Farleigh’s room, but you don’t care. You pass Felix’s room, then Venetia’s. Both of their lights are out, telling you that everyone in the house is probably asleep by now. You can only hope and pray that Farleigh isn’t.
You eventually find yourself standing in front of his room. Dim light peeks through from under his door, and you sigh with relief. He’s still awake. Your decision catches up to you and you realize how stupid it is that you’re about to knock on his door. You shake your head to clear your doubt, raising your hand and gently knocking.
You hear his bed shifting and footsteps following close after. You swallow nervously, your throat suddenly feeling dry. Your heart races with anticipation as he finally opens the door.
Fuck. He’s shirtless with only a pair of sweatpants on. Your eyes trail down subconsciously before you blink and look back up to his face. Is he wearing underwear?
“Hello,” He says, his grin foxlike. “I can’t sleep. Can we talk?” You ask, your voice shaky. You curse yourself for sounding nervous. He crosses his arms and raises his eyebrows. “Talk about what?” He questions.
You pause, unsure of what to say next. What were you going to talk about? He would deny any feelings towards you, so what was the point of even coming here?
“Just let me in, please.” You step forward and avoid his gaze. He steps to the side wordlessly, opening the door further to let you into his room.
You breathe in the familiar scent of that candle he’s always burning, and the scent of his cologne. It’s musky and spicy, with notes of vanilla. You tried to memorize it everytime you were close to him. You walk over to his bed and sit down on the edge, looking up at him as he closes the door behind him.
“Can I have a cigarette?” You ask, pointing to the pack sitting on his bedside table. He nods, and you carefully take one. He hands you the lighter.
He stares down at you as you light the cigarette, taking a drag from it. He chuckles to himself and you exhale, furrowing your eyebrows. “What’s funny?”
“You always said you hated the smell. Yet here you are, asking me for a cigarette,” He replies with a scoff. “Maybe you’re just a bad influence,” You shoot back, and his smile slightly fades.
You can see his eyes traveling down your body, lingering on your thighs and your bare legs. You had outgrown these sleep shorts, but you never cared because you figured no one would see you in them. Well, there goes that.
“Are we not going to talk about the other night?” You mutter. “What’s there to talk about?” He replies, and you roll your eyes. “Are you-” You pause and let out a frustrated breath. “Are you serious?” You exclaim angrily.
“You can’t blame it on being drunk this time, Farleigh.” You tell him, and he freezes, his gaze faltering downwards.
“Can we not talk about that? Let’s just…” He sighs with exasperation and sits next to you. You turn away from him, looking out the window. You decide not to press the issue, since it’s apparently too much for him to think about right now. Honestly, you aren’t even able to fully process what’s been going on between you two.
“Let’s just… talk,” He says finally, and you face him again, exhaling a small cloud of smoke. “Okay.” You shrug. It’s what you both do best: Talking. About anything and everything, despite the strange history of your relationship. You guessed that it was because you had known each other for so long, that it just came naturally. He’s just… real. He’s never pretending or putting on a façade, at least around you he’s not. Around the Cattons, he has to, because to them he’s just the wild child, the comedic relief, the American. You feel like you are the only one that gets to see the real Farleigh, and it feels like a privilege. But you know that’s not true, and you choose to believe it anyway.
“So… Our third year at Oxford,” Farleigh says. You let out a breath and raise your eyebrows. “Can’t believe it’s already been two years,” You both smile, thinking of all the good and bad memories you’ve made so far during your years at university.
“Can I be honest?” You ask, and he nods. “I’m scared.” You say simply. His eyebrows knit together. “Of what?” He replies. “Graduating. You know, I’ll probably go to graduate school or something, but I need to start making my own money. Get a job. Do adult things,” You sigh just at the thought of all the responsibilities. “I can’t be on a scholarship forever. Or have my parents pay forever,” You continue, shaking your head. “I’m putting them through enough as it is.”
Farleigh nods again with a look of understanding. “I might go back to the states. See my mom, maybe stay there for a while.” He says. You can’t help but feel a little sad at the thought of him being away for so long. You hate to admit it, but you would miss him.
“But we don’t have to worry about that right now. You’re too uptight. Let yourself have fun,” He nudges you softly. “I’m trying,” You mutter. “Well, you’re smoking. That’s one step closer,” He laughs a bit and you roll your eyes.
It goes quiet and you stare down into your lap. You can feel his eyes on you, and your heart begins to race with anticipation. That familiar tension returns in the air between you and Farleigh.
You look up slightly, his eyes meeting with yours. Your stomach churns as you look down to see his hand inching towards your thigh, eventually resting on top of it. “I know why you came here,” He says, his voice lowered.
You look back up to him. “What?” You whisper. “Don’t play dumb,” He shakes his head. “I’m not.” You reply, trying hard not to break the intense eye contact.
You gulp nervously and finally look away, your face giving you away and burning red. “Hmm,” He hums, his thumb brushing across your thigh. You try to distract yourself by pressing the cigarette out on the ashtray on his bedside table, watching the little flame burn out.
He gently reaches up and grabs your chin, tilting your head back towards him. He drags his thumb down your bottom lip as you stare into his eyes. He grins slightly before moving his hand to cup your cheek, leaning in closer until your noses brush together. You know you shouldn’t be doing this. You know Farleigh is emotionally unavailable and toxic, and he won’t ever discuss his feelings or yours. But you can’t help but melt into the kiss, his touch, his aura. It’s like he’s magnetic, pulling you in everytime you try to pull away.
Somehow, every single time he kisses you, it’s better than the first time. Your tongues intertwine as your lips move in a perfect rhythm while both of you fall back onto his bed clumsily. One of his hands tangles in your hair, and the one that was resting on your leg moves up to rest on your waist, his fingers caressing your bare skin due to your tank top riding up. He eventually shifts his position so that he’s on top of you, and you turn to lay on your back underneath him.
His kisses begin to move down to your jawline, then your neck. He sucks and licks your skin so cruelly, but you don’t want him to stop. You breathe in the scent of his hair, his curls tickling your face, and you can already feel yourself becoming weak again.
You feel his hands start to trail down your body, resting on your hips, as he moves down the bed and you peer down to see him looking up at you from between your legs. Feverish heat burns across your skin just at the sight of it.
“Wait, wait. I’ve never-“ You start, suddenly feeling nervous. “It’s okay,” Farleigh replies, his eyes soft and warm as he gazes up at you. “Just relax,” He murmurs, gently pulling down your shorts and panties at the same time, shuffling them off your legs.
Just relax, you think. Easier said than done. You’ve pictured this moment so many times in the past few days, and you can’t believe it’s becoming reality.
And of all the times you’ve fantasized about this, none of them could ever do Farleigh’s beauty justice. His dark eyes are shining with something of lust and hunger, his plush lips slightly parted and his shoulders broad and golden. His curly hair is only slightly wet from his shower earlier, yet still perfectly coiled.
He looks up at you, trying to convey something through his gaze. “So pretty,” He mutters, tracing a finger along your thigh. Your breath catches in your throat and you feel your stomach fluttering already.
He lifts your legs up and places them over his shoulders. Your heart pounds in anticipation and you can hear yourself breathing among the silence.
Farleigh leans down and presses a few kisses along your inner thigh, and you don’t know how much longer you can stand his teasing. You watch him gaze up at you through his lashes as he dips a finger into your wetness and you see the smirk that tugs at his lips. He raises his eyebrows at you and your face turns red. “Stop,” You cover your face with both hands, your stomach doing flips. You can’t handle how perfect he looks right now, even as he teases you for how soaked you are already.
“Hey, look at me,” He says, his deep voice vibrating against your skin. You let your hands fall back to your sides, smiling shyly. His expression turns more serious as he furrows his brows, slipping his finger inside of you. He moans before you even can, his head falling against your thigh.
That familiar stretch around his finger has your mind reeling as you throw your head back. He pulls it out and you whimper at the loss, until you feel his middle and ring finger on your clit. Your hands instinctively move to grasp the sheets as he strokes your bundle of nerves perfectly, letting your head fall back down to watch him. He continues to maintain eye contact and it makes you so weak.
Your brain almost turns to mush as you see him leaning down, his head buried between your legs. A moan louder than you intended leaves your mouth as you feel his tongue greedily licking a stripe up your pussy.
“Shit,” You huff, your chest heaving up and down. No one had ever given you head before, until now, so you didn’t really understand your girlfriends when they would tell you how amazing it felt. But now, you completely get it. His tongue moves in long, slow strokes and his pretty nose nudges perfectly against your clit.
He barely lifts his head so he can stare up at you to watch your reaction. You grind up against his face, your hand reaching down to grab a handful of his curls. He groans at the feeling before inserting a finger again, moving at the perfect pace along with his tongue. The combination is enough to make your legs shake. The lewd sounds of him lapping up your cum and both of your wanton moans echo throughout his room.
“Farleigh!” You almost scream his name before letting out a long, drawn out moan. He glances up at you once more, his pupils huge with lust. He moans against you as he absolutely devours you, adding a second finger in. His long fingers brush against that divine spot inside of you and you whimper helplessly, your other hand gripping his sheets as if it could help ground you somehow. That delicious heat builds in the base of your stomach, spreading like a fire.
“I’m gonna-“ You gasp for air, your chest heaving up and down. His eyes are half-lidded and he seems completely lost in the moment, just absolutely pussy drunk. “Let go,” He says, his voice deep and raspy.
And you do exactly that. The pleasure shoots through your veins like a drug, your grasp in his hair tightening and your hips rolling as you ride it out. You eventually come down from your high, letting your legs drop from his shoulders as you let out a shaky sigh, your heart still pounding against your ribs.
“Fuckk,” You breathe out, resting your head against the pillow. Farleigh crawls over you, leaning down to kiss you. The lower half of his face is covered in your slick, but you couldn’t care less. He kisses you passionately, desperately, groaning into your mouth. You can taste yourself on his lips and his tongue, and it just turns you on even more.
He pulls away, his lips hovering over yours. You look up at him and suddenly feel an indescribable desire wash over you as you stare into his deep brown eyes. It’s like you can’t get close enough to him, like you need more than everything he’s already given you. You want him inside of you. You want to feel every part of him. You want him to feel every part of you.
“Farleigh,” You whisper, reaching up to touch his face. “What is it?” He whispers back, lightly touching your own face.
“I want you,” You say. You don’t care how stupid you sound right now. This carnal desire has completely taken over you.
“In what way?” He replies, smirking smugly. “I think you know which way I mean,” You mutter. You don’t have time for his teasing, although you love it.
His expression softens and he seems to understand what you mean. “Please, I need you,” You can’t believe you’re begging for Farleigh of all people right now. You know you’ll be regretting it later. His eyes widen and he seems shocked by your confession.
“Far…” You whisper, tracing your finger along his lips. He opens his mouth to speak, hesitating slightly.
“Do you know what you do to me?” He asks, his voice soft. You look up at him and tilt your head. He takes your hand and guides it down below his waist while still looking down at you. You gasp softly when you feel that his dick is so hard underneath his sweatpants. It has to be painful. You slowly rub your hand against him and his eyebrows draw together as he stutters slightly, and it almost looks like he’s in pain.
“Baby-“ Farleigh whimpers. “Please,” You beg once again, and he nods, quickly taking his pants off and throwing them somewhere on the floor of his bedroom. You look down at his dick, and you have to keep your jaw from dropping.
It’s definitely the biggest you’ve seen, and although you haven’t seen many in your lifetime, you know he would be considered above average. It’s long, with a bit of girth to it, veiny and already leaking precum from the tip. You feel yourself starting to get nervous. You aren’t sure if you could even take all of it, but hell, you’re going to try. You hope he didn’t pick up on your reaction, because you know he would tease you over it.
He places his hands on either side of your head and leans down onto his elbows. He never takes his eyes off yours as he positions himself. You wrap your legs around his waist, letting your ankles rest on his back.
He slowly begins to slide in, and you grunt quietly at the pain. He goes a bit deeper before you panic and place a hand on his lower stomach, stopping him. “I can’t-“ You wince in pain.
“Yes, you can. You can take it,” He nods and brushes the side of your face with his fingers. He takes your hand off of his stomach gently and places your arm back onto the bed. You nod in an attempt to encourage yourself, gritting your teeth to withstand the pain. You reach up to his shoulders, resting your hands on his shoulder blades, trying to keep your nails from digging into his skin as you hold onto him.
“Fuck,” Farleigh grunts as your walls grip him tightly, sucking him in. Eventually he’s buried inside of you to the hilt, and you can feel every inch of him. You’re still trying to adjust to his size, and the pain is slowly subsiding as he groans and drops his head and closes his eyes. You press your hips up against his, trying to get him to start moving. “Far,” You mutter. You can tell he’s trying to hold back. He breathes heavily and opens his eyes again, gazing into yours.
“I’m ready,” You whisper. His eyebrows knit together as he rolls his hips slowly, causing your eyes to roll back and drawing a short moan out of you. He shudders, slightly pulling out of you before thrusting back in. You wonder how he’s so good at this as your nails dig crescent moons into his back with each slow thrust and roll of his hips. Your mouth falls open and you try to be quieter but it’s no use.
He buries his head into the crook of your neck, his curls tickling your face. He’s whimpering and moaning your name and other incoherent nonsense right into your ear. He sets a beautiful rhythm, his bed creaking underneath you as you sink into the plush of the mattress. You think you hear the headboard hitting the wall but you don’t care about the loud sounds you two are creating. You just don’t want this moment to end.
He looks back up to you and you can see he’s already fucked out. His eyes are even more glazed over than before and sex sweat forms on his brow. He whimpers helplessly and pants heavily. “You’re so good,” He breathes. “So, so good,” You could probably cum just from his words alone.
You let out a wanton moan as he hits that spot again, deep inside of you. “Oh, fuck!” You gasp and claw at his shoulders. He drops his head again, kissing your neck as he thrusts into you faster and deeper each time, hitting your spot over and over once he’s found it.
“Yeah, that’s it,” He groans against your neck and you feel tears brimming in your eyes. “Farleigh- It’s-“ You can’t seem to form words, your brain turned to sizzling hot liquid. “I know, I know,” He whimpers, his voice slightly higher pitched and breathless. You try to hold on longer, but you’re already coming undone as your orgasm hits you sooner than you expected. Your body stills and you clench even harder around him. He moans, that pained expression crossing his face once again. “Oh God,” He chokes out, his thrusts beginning to become less steady.
“Where should I-“ Farleigh pants. “Inside,” You tell him. You’re on birth control, but you don’t have the mental capacity to explain that to him or explain why. His hips stutter and he stiffens, finishing inside of you, the warm feeling spreading throughout your lower stomach. He collapses on top of you, his head on your chest, resting on the soft fabric of your shirt.
You’re already sleepy and physically exhausted from what just took place. You breathe in his scent one more time and let out a sigh, staring up at the ceiling and trying to process what you just did. Then he’s wrapping his arms around you gently before pulling out of you slowly. You grunt a bit, feeling a dull ache between your legs, but you can’t help but miss the feeling of him inside of you.
He adjusts the both of you so that you’re both laying on your side, allowing you to stretch out a bit and cuddle up to him, tucking your head in the crook of his neck. He holds you, and for a moment, it feels like a real relationship. Something you had never experienced. Something deep. Something real. And then you remember that it’s not. After this, he will go back to avoiding you and acting like he can’t stand you. You just wish that he would put his pride away and admit to you what he really feels. But what does he really feel? Are you stupid for thinking that there’s something here?
Farleigh strokes his fingers through your hair, brushing away some of the strands plastered onto your forehead by your sweat. He seems to notice your silence.
“You’re thinking too much,” He says, his voice beautifully hoarse. You sigh, relaxing your shoulders. “Am I?” You reply, your voice weaker than you thought it would be.
“Just sleep here tonight,” He mutters, resting his chin on top of your head. You so badly want to ask him to be serious and have an actual conversation with you about your… relationship.
“Okay… but we need to talk about this,” You respond quietly. He sighs and shifts a bit, careful not to move you too much. “We can in the morning,” He says, but you know that won’t happen. You’ll just have to settle for no answers to your questions for the time being.
You curl up closer to him and let your eyes close, breathing slowly and peacefully. “Goodnight,” You murmur. “Night,” He replies, sounding just as tired as you are. You drift off to sleep in Farleigh Start’s arms.
ONE YEAR EARLIER
You were usually on okay terms with Farleigh. But you remember exactly when the dislike turned into hatred.
It was right before end of term exams and Felix convinced you to go to the pub to blow off some steam and relax after all your revising. You reluctantly agreed, then regret your decision when you saw Farleigh and Sasha there.
It was pretty far into the evening and you were beginning to get sleepy. You had spaced out for a moment, staring out the window and watching the snow fall before you heard something that peaked your interest.
“I mean, Felix, you have got to settle down,” Farleigh chuckled and nudged Sasha, pointing his cigarette at Felix.
Felix grinned stupidly and shrugged. “Listen, mate. I’ve tried.” Some other friends of his joined in with the laughter.
You sat up and leaned forward, facing Farleigh. “You’re one to comment on relationships,” You said, raising an eyebrow. Everyone else sort of quieted down after hearing your words.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Farleigh rolled his eyes at you and Sasha just glared. “You and Sasha. You’re dysfunctional.” You responded, unafraid to challenge him.
“Excuse me?” Sasha looked at you like you just committed a hate crime. “Yeah. He cheats on you, you cheat on him, you get back together, blah blah blah.” You took a sip of your beer and shrugged. “It’s gone on for almost a year now. It’s exhausting,”
Farleigh chuckled. “Ohh, you want to come after my relationship?” He smirked as if he was cooking up a plan in his mind of how to humiliate you best.
“Well, I bet you would like everyone to know that you lost your virginity to Joshua Brown,” Farleigh said, loud enough for even people from other tables to hear. A small chorus of gasps echoed across the room.
“You’re desperate, easy, and sloppy. You take anyone who wants you. I guess that’s what happens when you get no attention before you go to college, hm?” He just kept going, and the whole room went silent
“I’ve seen you walk out of so many dorms at six in the morning, it’s insane. You can’t even keep a fucking man,” Farleigh’s tone was harsher and colder than you’d ever heard before. Felix was staring at you in shock and Sasha was giving you that judgemental look.
You looked around to see all the pairs of eyes on you. “Fucking hell, Farleigh,” Felix muttered, shaking his head at him.
You stood up and grabbed your bag hastily, storming out of the pub with tears in your eyes. Why was he such a bitch? Why did he hate you?
Your reputation was officially ruined. All that time, he never told anyone about your situation with Joshua. Until now. He was doing so well. The whole class thought you were an innocent and pure, high achieving student, and now what would they think? You wish you didn’t care so much about how others perceive you, but you do.
You hated Farleigh. You hated him for ruining your reputation and your image. It was impossible to get him back or do something worse, since basically everyone knew he was a slut. But he got praised for it.
Ever since that night at the pub, other students would look at you sideways and whisper things about you as if you couldn’t hear them.
Fuck you, Farleigh. You decided you were officially done with him and your weird friendship. Even if that meant having to avoid him at every cost.

They're on the front page for about a week.
They run the stories of Hopper and Henry Creel simultaneously - honestly, Eddie kind of thinks the fact that Hopper was presumed dead and is now back makes it easier for people to believe a previously assumed dead guy is the top suspect for the murders.
Eddie gets barely a mention clearing him of all charges. There's a couple of articles about him and Steve fighting off Henry Creel, but the focus is more on Steve than anything else.
Steve bitches about it, about how they did the same thing after Starcourt, but Eddie's kind of glad his name isn't plastered all over the place anymore.
He and Steve are down in the kitchen scrounging up celebratory snacks and beers - Steve has a clean bill of health, and Eddie's stitches are coming out in a few days - when the phone rings.
"Harrington residence, this is Steve speaking," he greets.
Eddie barely has time to decide he's absolutely going to tease him about that later when the response comes - loud enough for him to hear it.
"Steven, my boy!" the voice booms, spirited and affable.
Steve closes his eyes, the muscles in his jaw tightening. "Hi, Dad."
"We just heard the news!" Steve's father says. "Why didn't you call to tell us? Did the earthquake damage anything?"
Part of Eddie thinks he should leave. Or at least back away, so he can't hear everything that's being said - but the other part of him thinks that Steve'd push him away if he didn't want him here, and with how tense Steve's gone next to him, Eddie can't bring himself to pull away.
"The house is fine," Steve says. "Loch Nora didn't get hit at all."
"Good, good," Mr. Harrington says. "Your mother hears you and Rachel have been volunteering with the relief efforts?"
Eddie didn't think it was possible, but Steve goes even stiffer.
"Robin," he corrects, his tone smooth and entirely void of inflection. "Yes, we've been coordinating donations."
"That's what I want to hear!" There's a sound like a loud clap. "I'm glad to see you're taking this seriously. You had a lot of ground to make up for, but it seems giving you a dose of reality has paid off. We'll be able to have some real talks about your future soon. What? Oh, your mother wants to talk to you."
There's a shuffling noise, then a quieter and much less friendly voice greets, "Steven."
"Hey Mom," Steve's posture relaxes a little. "I told Dad we made it out okay."
There's some kind of response, but Steve's mom is too quiet for Eddie to make it out.
"No, of course I didn't file charges. I knew you'd want to handle it if anything else happened." A pause. "Yes, that Carver. Mom, it's not - yeah. Yeah, okay. No, it's just him. I think he's just mad that people listened to me and not him. Yeah, I - all right. Bye."
He hangs up the phone, leaning in with one arm braced against the wall, a long line of tension.
"Steve?" Eddie says quietly.
Steve turns to face him, giving a little crooked smile. "You can ask if you want. I don't mind you and Robin knowing. It's… easier sometimes, if she expects it, and it's probably the same with you."
Eddie aches a little. "What was your dad talking about? What ground to make up for?"
Steve makes a face. "I did a lot of damage to the Harrington image the last bit of high school, you know. Stopped caring about my reputation, didn't get accepted into any of the colleges they wanted me to go to, kept getting into fights."
"But that wasn't - did they even ask you what actually happened?" Eddie asks.
"They don't care what actually happened," Steve replies. "Just what it looked like. Like I said, it's all about appearances with them. My dad's the main reason I worked at Scoops instead of being a lifeguard again last summer - he says it's because I needed a real life experience, learn what it means to work at the bottom, but he was just pissy and trying to humiliate me. He talks a big game about working hard, but all he really cares about is how I make them look. Now that I've gotten good press twice, he's happy again."
Eddie's mouth opens, then closes, then opens again. "He didn't even ask if you were okay."
Steve shrugs. "I looked fine in the papers."
Right.
Appearances.
"Will you be mad at me if I punch your dad if I ever see him?" Eddie asks.
Steve laughs, a surprised little sound like he's startled by it. "No," he says. "But only if I get to punch yours for leaving you."
Oh.
If Eddie was thinking about it, he'd have moved slowly, making sure to telegraph what he was doing so he didn't startle Steve, but he reacts on instinct and pulls Steve into a hug.
Steve doesn't even flinch at the sudden motion. He just melts into it, letting Eddie wrap him up and hold him tightly. His arms come up to cross over Eddie's shoulder blades, the placement automatically mindful of his injuries in the way only someone who's bandaged them multiple times could be.
"Sometimes I wish they just wouldn't call at all," Steve admits, face buried in Eddie's neck. It comes out in a rush, like he hadn't really thought about it before he said it, but he's getting it out anyway. "That they'd just cut me out of their life, instead of stringing me along."
"Fuck them," Eddie says. "I've got you."
He can hear Steve swallow, and Steve hugs him tighter.
They stay like that for a long while, until Eddie finally pulls back.
"Hey," he says softly. "I'll get the food and stuff. Go upstairs and see Robin."
Steve looks uncertain. "You sure?"
Eddie hugs him one more time. "You've got two soulmates," he murmurs. "Let us take care of you a little, okay?"
Steve squeezes him tight, then lets go with a nod before heading upstairs.
Eddie dithers in the kitchen for a bit, taking an extra long time. Whatever his complicated feelings are, it doesn't bother him at all to give Steve and Robin some space like this.
They're talking when he comes back, which isn't a surprise, and he hears his own name as he gets closer to the bedroom. Eddie pauses, even though he shouldn't, listening through the cracked door. He'll feel worse about it later, probably, but right now the masochistic side of him can't resist the urge to know what they're saying about him.
"I want him so much, Robs," he hears Steve saying, low and soft like he's trying to be quiet.
"I know," Robin replies, her tone somehow managing to be both gentle and snarky at the same time. "It's kind of pathetic."
Steve lets out a muffled groan. "Not helping. I don't exactly have the greatest track record at being able to get over people! I thought, with my soulmate-"
He cuts off, and Eddie can't help the bubbling anger that springs up. Steve thought? Has he stopped for one second to think about how Eddie might feel, only ever having a platonic soulmate? Wanting him just as bad and not being able to have him, not being able to have anyone?
"-someone else?" Robin is saying, like she's reading his thoughts, and Eddie has to hold his breath as he makes sure he hadn't accidentally said that outloud.
"I don't want anyone else," Steve says miserably. "Just him. I think - I think it's always going to be him. Fuck, why does this have to be so complicated?"
There's a heavy, thick silence, and Eddie's anger simmers and crackles under his skin, the way it always does when there's a hefty mixing of guilt in it.
"Do you think-" Robin starts, then stops. "Do you wish-" She stops again, voice thick with emotion. "Would it be easier if we-"
"No," Steve says, cutting her off at the same time that Eddie realizes what she's probably trying to bring herself to ask.
There's the muffled sound of shuffling, quiet hitching breaths - probably the motions of Steve trying to reassure one of his soulmates that he wants her, and he imagines him gathering her close, pressing soft kisses anywhere he can reach, cutting off anything she tries to say with a deeper, fiercer kiss.
Eddie bites the inside of his cheek so hard he tastes copper to keep himself from making some kind of sound to give himself away. He hates that he doesn't know what he's feeling - hates that he thinks he's jealous of Robin just as much as he doesn't feel jealous of her, not really. He's jealous of the images he conjures when he thinks about them together, but he's never actually jealous when he's with them, when he watches them.
That reminder makes him shift, peeking through the cracked door so he can see them. They're sitting facing each other, legs all tangled together. One of Steve's hands is covering Robin's heart, and the other is curled around one of Robin's hands, pinning it to his chest over his own heart, and their foreheads are pressed together.
Something in Eddie settles in a way he can't explain, all thoughts of jealousy gone.
"There's no me without you," Steve is saying. "You're a part of me, Robs, I can't do this without either of you."
She says something too muffled for Eddie to make out.
"I'm happy. I really am, I promise. I love you, I love us, exactly the way we are. And with Eddie-"
Eddie leans forward, too desperate to know what he's going to say to worry about being caught.
"I don't need anything else other than just him. However I can have him. If it's never romantic, if this is us forever - it doesn't matter, not really. I just need you and him, and the kids, and I'm good."
There's silence, the two of them just completely wrapped up in each other, and fuck, Eddie - he thinks you know what, if this is it, if what he has is Steve and Robin and the kids forever, then he's good, too.
"I love you, Robin Buckley," Steve says. "In a way I never realized was possible, until you and that dumb kid showed up in my life and taught me that you don't have to do anything to earn someone's love. That sometimes, it's just unconditional."
Steve was sixteen when he fought his first demogorgon, Eddie remembers that. Which means he couldn't have been any younger than that when he started really spending any time with Dustin or Robin, which means - the same thing that Eddie went through when he first moved in with Uncle Wayne, the thing that was so impossible for him to believe at twelve, Steve wasn't shown until he was probably seventeen.
Fuck, his heart aches.
"Does Henderson know he was your first true love?" Robin asks, her voice a little wet, but obviously trying to make things a little lighter.
Steve laughs, the sound just a bit thick. "No, and he'd be insufferable if I told him."
There's the faint sting of a new lie being written on the back of his calf, and the second he registers it, he hears Robin's startled laughter. Eddie pulls back from the door, sucking in a deep breath and letting it out, trying to get himself back under control.
"Oh my God, Steve, you did tell him! When?"
He can hear Steve sputtering and deflecting, the sound of Robin smacking him and Steve scrambling - probably trying to avoid them - and if there was ever going to be a good time to announce his return after shamelessly listening in for too long, now is probably it.
Eddie pushes open the door, six pack under one arm and bags of popcorn and chips under the other as he shoots a hopefully only slightly manic grin at them. "What's Steve lying about now?"
"Nothing!" Steve says too quickly.
Sloppy, for him, considering Eddie knows how good Steve usually is at using sarcasm or half truths to avoid telling lies, so Eddie tosses the bag of popcorn at him.
He catches it easily, of course, but it means he's now vulnerable to Robin's attacks, and he has to swerve to avoid another slap to his shoulder.
"Steve's trying to pretend like we both didn't get that lie, too," Robin says.
Steve groans. "Fine, Jesus. It was back when we were waiting at the camper, and Dustin was upset. I told him that he was the first person who was ever just - there, in my life because he wanted to be, even after he didn't need me to fight demodogs. No one could ever replace him."
"You're such a sap, Steve," Eddie teases him as he comes to sit next to him and Robin.
"Shut up," Steve grumbles. "That's it, I'm picking the movie."
The next day, Lucas and Max swing by. Steve hauls a basketball stand out of the garage and sets it up in the driveway, and Eddie sits at the kitchen table, eating a bologna sandwich while he watches them play.
It's safer inside, where there's no one to see if he gets affected by Steve's tank top and shorts.
Or at least, he thought it was safer inside.
"Do you love Steve?" Max asks, plopping down beside him.
Eddie chokes on his Coke, and she stares at him unsympathetically until he manages to breathe again.
"He's my soulmate, so." Eddie shrugs.
Max gives him an unimpressed look, and yeah, okay, he figures they both know soulmates aren't a guarantee of anything. Eddie's parents were soulmates, after all, loved each other more than anything else in this world, and that still hadn't been enough.
"I wanted him to be my soulmate before I knew it was him," he admits, because that's a more true answer without actually having to say yes or no. "Nothing's happened since to change that."
She gets this look on her face like she's trying to decide if that's an acceptable response. After a moment, she rests her chin on her knees, staring out the window, and Eddie figures he's in the clear.
"Steve has two soulmates," she says after a while. "You don't. Doesn't that make you feel - I don't know, like you aren't enough?"
"Jesus Christ, Red, you're not pulling any punches today, are you?" Eddie swears.
He doesn't actually want to have this conversation. It's not something he's completely sorted out on his own, yet, even though he's done a lot of thinking on it, and he's tempted to tell her to mind her own business.
But she won't look at him, and he knows why she's asking. She's not talking about him and Steve and Robin, not really.
He thinks about telling her something standard about soulmates, or maybe even the advice that his uncle gave him, but it doesn't feel right.
"It's not what I always imagined," Eddie admits slowly.
Max doesn't say anything, but he watches the way she starts to unwind a little, how she doesn't hold herself so stiff, tilts a little to actually listen to what he's saying.
"You know Steve and I talked to each other when we were younger. We thought the same way about a lot of stuff, and I had this idea in my head that he was some little outcast like me, in another small town somewhere out there, that we'd move to a big city and find each other. But then we stopped talking."
"How come?" Max asks, looking caught up despite herself.
Eddie grins at her, wide and self depreciating. "I found out he was probably some rich, popular jerk, and decided I hated him."
And there's that unimpressed look again.
"Yeah, yeah," Eddie grumbles. "Let's just say there might be some truth to not talking with your soulmate before you actually meet them. Point is, for almost five years, I hated my soulmate. Thought the best I could hope for was that we'd meet when we were thirty and ancient, and maybe then he would have changed. Then a little while ago, I met Steve."
Max's brows furrow. "You met Steve way before that."
"Nah," he says. "I knew of Steve. I had a lot of assumptions about him, knew what I thought he was, but I didn't know the real Steve. That Steve I met when he helped explain all of this to me and didn't make me feel stupid for not picking up some of it right away, even after I held a broken bottle to his throat."
She snorts, but looks like she's considering that. "I met him when he was putting himself between me, Lucas, and Dustin and a hoard of demodogs, a couple of hours after calling them dickheads and me some random girl."
Eddie salutes her with his can of Coke, half in understanding and half to cover the way his heart wants to melt again. "That Steve was nothing like I imagined my soulmate to be, when I was daydreaming about him or hating him. But I knew I didn't want anyone else, and Steve having another soulmate doesn't change that. I don't think it makes what he feels for me any less than what I feel for him, and I don't think it means I'm less important to him than he is to me."
Max frowns. "Really, or are you just saying that?"
"Really," Eddie says, though he hadn't actually been sure it was true until he heard himself say it. "I'm not saying it's not hard sometimes. And sometimes I get in my head about it. But I wouldn't change it. Steve wouldn't be the same without Robin, you know? He wouldn't be the Steve that made me want him to be my soulmate so bad."
There's a long moment of silence. Then, "Would you be saying that if both of his soulmates were romantic?"
Eddie's glad he stopped drinking, because he knows he would have choked again. For a split second, she wonders if she's picked up on - but no, that still isn't what this about. "Are both of yours romantic?"
Her jaw juts forward, arms hugging tighter around her knees. "What if they were?"
Fuck, he doesn't know what to say to that. "It's okay to like both guys and girls," he says, because he feels like that's the most important bit. "I do. I mean, mostly guys, but sometimes girls."
Her grip loosens a little, but she still doesn't say anything.
"It sounds like maybe I'm not the one you should be talking to about that," he says carefully.
She scowls. "I talked to Steve already."
Right, of course she did.
"What did Steve say?"
"Steve said he thinks the line between platonic and romantic soulmates isn't as straightforward as people like to pretend it is. That sometimes what you might think should be romantic is actually platonic, and sometimes what you think should be platonic is romantic, and sometimes there's going to be things that blur the lines and you don't really know which one it is. He said it was okay to have two platonic or two romantic or one of each or, like, any combination." She makes a face here, like she's not entirely sure what he meant by any combination - or like she was sure, and didn't need that much detail. "That as long as everyone was communicating, it was okay to do whatever worked for us."
Eddie swallows. "Steve sounds pretty smart."
Max rolls her eyes. "He has his moments."
"So… are you communicating with Lucas and El?" he asks.
She picks at a rip in her jeans. "I talked to Lucas."
He waits, but it seems like that's all he's going to get. He starts to ask what Lucas said, but… he gets the feeling that it's not necessarily about what he said or not.
"But it's Lucas," Eddie says. "And you wanted to hear how someone else in a familiar situation felt."
Eddie gets that familiar, itchy feeling that he does when he wants to run, and he only barely resists the urge to bounce his leg up and down. It's not that he wants to run from Max, or even from this conversation, it's just - it's starting to make him think about things, and he really, really doesn't want an audience for this. He wants to lock himself in a room and pace, listen to some music, maybe scribble out his thoughts, something to get his hands moving and his brain in some kind of order -
"Even if Steve wanted both of us romantically," he says, knowing it's close enough that it's not a lie. "I would still rather be his soulmate than anyone else."
Max looks at him with narrowed eyes for a long moment. "I'm gonna ask Steve if you lied about that."
Eddie fixes her with an unimpressed look right back. "You think I'd do that to him?"
"You better not." There's an edge of menace in her tone, but she lets it go, so Eddie figures she doesn't really think he'd lie about something like that knowing it would be etched on Steve's skin forever.
Silence stretches between them, and Eddie follows her gaze out the window, watching Steve and Lucas playing basketball.
"I've put him through so much already," Max says, so quietly that he can barely hear it.
Fuck, Eddie is so fucking soft for these kids.
"You have not," Eddie says immediately. "You haven't done a goddamn thing, Red. Both of you have already been through so much, and it's not because of something either of you did. It's fucking Hawkins."
She doesn't look convinced, so Eddie pushes his shoulder against hers.
"Lucas is smart. He's more emotionally intelligent than I am-" Max snorts at him, and he's reasonably sure he hears her mutter something along the lines of like that's hard, but he ignores her. "He knows what he can take and what he can't. All you have to do is believe him when he tells you it."
She's quiet for a moment, looking contemplative. Then she asks, "Does that work for you?"
Right, yeah, okay, he deserved that one. He thinks about deflecting, but -
"I'm trying," he admits quietly. "What do you think, huh, you gonna let me beat you there or are we gonna do this together?"
Max glances out the window again, then turns to look back at him, her chin jutting out. "Steve loves too much, and he gets it thrown back at him too often. I don't think he really believes that we love him as much as he loves us, even though we do."
She says it like a threat, like she's saying if you tell him I said that I will kill you or maybe if you hurt him I will kill you. Either way, he'd be dead.
"I'll talk to Lucas and El, and you make sure you don't disappoint him."
Goddamn if that doesn't stab right to the heart of him, lodging itself beneath his ribcage and sticking right into the parts that'd already made him want to run from this conversation.
"Okay," he manages to get out, because he's not sure he'll survive any other answer.
Max nods. "Good talk," she tells him, and then she pushes herself up and she's gone.
Eddie stays there, mulling all of that over. He doesn't think she'd actually tell Steve anything they just talked about, nor does he think she really has any idea that Steve had asked him to make their bond romantic and he'd turned him down. Honestly, Eddie could probably get away with patting himself on the back for actually managing to give some decent advice and be the person she'd needed him to be for just a little while, then go on being a very devoted platonic soulmate for Steve.
Except even if Max doesn't really know, Eddie does. And now Eddie's thinking about things he doesn't want to, and wondering how much of a hypocrite some of the advice that he gave her makes him, and -
"Hey," Lucas says, and Eddie yelps.
Lucas raises his eyebrows at him.
"Jesus Christ, don't do that," Eddie bitches.
There's a little smirk, but fortunately, Lucas doesn't actually comment on it. "You talk to Max?" he asks instead.
"Yeah," Eddie replies, narrowing his eyes at him.
Lucas lights up, though, his whole face practically beaming with his smile. "Good. I figured it'd help her to hear that your soulmate cares about you no matter what from someone who wasn't me."
Eddie raises one eyebrow. "How do you know that's what I said?"
Lucas rolls his eyes. "Because you're Steve's soulmate. If that wasn't the way you felt, Robin would know, and she'd have already murdered you."
Eddie considers that. "Okay, fair."
Lucas makes his way over to the fridge, yanking it open and standing in front of it as he peers in. "So what did you tell her?"
Eddie sits back, waiting until Lucas turns to look back at him so he can shoot him a wide, smug grin. "If she wants you to know, she'll tell you."
He gets a glare in return, but Lucas doesn't protest that, just leans back in to grab a pair of Gatorades from the fridge. He twists the top off of one, taking a long swallow before he shuts the door and starts back out of the kitchen, giving him a little nod as he passes.
"Hey, Lucas?" Eddie calls before he can leave.
Lucas pauses, looking quizzically at him.
"I'm guessing you talk to Steve like Max does, about all this." Eddie makes an exaggerated gesture between them and out the kitchen window, meant to loop all of them in together. "But, uh. You know. If you ever want a different perspective, from someone in kind of your position."
He motions to himself, then splays his hands out all ta-da.
Lucas hesitates, lingering in the middle of the kitchen before he seems to make a decision.
"I was kind of upset about it when I first found out Max's other soulmate was El," he admits. "It was right after Billy died, and their soulmate bond was new, and Max kept letting El in while she was shutting me out. And I was angry, and jealous, and then when El had to leave and Max kept pushing me away, I just kept thinking that if El was here Max wouldn't be by herself so much, that the wrong soulmate got to stay in Hawkins."
Lucas pauses, twisting the Gatorades in his hand, but Eddie gets the feeling it's a gathering his thoughts pause more than a waiting for Eddie to say something pause.
"Eventually I realized that El could help Max in a way that I couldn't, and that maybe that was the point. I started calling El a little, too, when the phone wasn't busy, and just - El was grieving, too. I didn't want to feel jealous over something that helped them both anymore. It's been good with El back, really good. I don't know if I like El like that, but if Max does-" he shrugs. "I guess I kind of already got over the jealousy bit. It doesn't really matter to me if they kiss while they're having sleepovers or not, as long as they don't exclude me."
Now it seems like a waiting for Eddie to say something pause, so he gives a soft little hum. "What do you do if you end up feeling excluded?"
Lucas blinks, like he wasn't expecting that question. "Uh. Well, before, I talked to my parents and sometimes to Steve or Robin or Dustin. It's hard talking to Mike or Will about it because they're not all that objective about El stuff. I don't… really know if I want to tell my parents about Max and El like that yet, so I guess… talk to Steve or Robin or Dustin." He pauses, then, more tentatively, "Or you?"
Fuck, these kids keep getting to him. "Or me," he agrees easily. "But you should probably also add talk to Max and El to that list."
Lucas makes a face, but doesn't disagree. "I don't think a lot of the others know about Max," he says instead. "Just me and Steve and Robin, and now you."
There's an edge to his voice, like he's pretty sure Eddie must be safe if Max told him, but he's ready to fight him about it anyway.
"Max knows about me, now, so we're even," Eddie replies, pleased that the effort he puts into making sure his voice sounds steady pays off.
"Yeah?" Lucas asks. "Who else knows?"
"Steve and Robin. And now Max and you," Eddie replies.
Lucas lights up a little. "Cool."
"Cool," Eddie echoes, even though he feels a little shaky from the fact that he's now said it twice today, which is double the amount of times he's ever said it before at all.
There's a comfortable silence for a moment.
"It's complicated, being in our position," Eddie says after a bit. "I think it's always going to be complicated. But if we let it - I think it could be really great, too. Most people only end up in pairs, but us? We get a whole damn party of interconnected soulmates."
"A party of soulmates," Lucas says thoughtfully, then grins. "Yeah, I like that."
"You're a good kid, Lucas," Eddie tells him, not sure if he really needs to hear it, but he still remembers the way it made him feel when Uncle Wayne said it.
Lucas ducks his head, looking a little pleased, even though he follows it up with a sidelong look. "Even though I'm kind of a jock?"
Eddie shrugs. "My soulmate is a whole jock. I guess that means I've got a little jock in me, too."
Lucas's expression shifts, turning mischievous, and suddenly he looks like the fifteen year old boy he is, and not a world-weary adult. It's nice, it's wonderful, Eddie loves to see it, except it makes him realize what he just said far, far too late to do anything about it.
In his defense, they were having a serious discussion, and -
Yeah, he's got nothing.
Maybe it'll be fine? Lucas is probably the most mature out of all of the boys, maybe -
"I don't know, man," Lucas says, slowly, like he's actually considering that. "We've all heard the rumors about Steve. I don't think it's something little you're gonna be dealing with."
Eddie gapes at him.
"I said you were mature," he bemoans, flinging his upper body over the top of the kitchen table just to make Lucas laugh harder. "I told Max you were emotionally intelligent! Begone from my sight!"
Lucas takes his Gatorades and leaves, still laughing at him.
"Max cornered me in the kitchen to threaten me today," Eddie says.
Steve snorts. "Of course she did. What about?"
Eddie shrugs, waiting for Steve to look at him so he can waggle his eyebrows at him. "She also threatened to kill me if I told you."
Steve shoves him, and Eddie falls back dramatically, sprawling out on the couch. He props himself up on his elbows to look at Steve, but he doesn't seem inclined to actually push him to reveal what he and Max talked about. Instead, Steve goes about shutting down for the night, checking to make sure all the windows and the sliding glass door are locked.
"Soulmate stuff," Eddie says. Or more like blurts out, before he can change his mind, to force himself to have to keep going. "She told me what you said about the line between platonic and romantic soulmates. Made me think about some things."
"Yeah?" Steve asks, stopping by the couch to look at him.
"Do you still want me, Steve?" Eddie asks, his heart in his throat.
He isn't prepared for Steve to shut down, for the way his face goes cold and hard and blank.
"Not cool, Eddie," Steve says, turning away and going back to the windows in the living room.
Eddie pushes himself up off the couch, then immediately doubts himself and sits back down. "Steve, what?"
Steve won't look at him, and he can hear the window locks rattling with the force that Steve's using to check them. "You're being a dick, man, come on. You can't ask me stuff like that."
"I-" he starts, then stops, his mind scrambling a little. Is he too late? Did Steve move on already, even though he told Robin that he wasn't going to? Is Eddie so easy to get over that even his fucking soulmate couldn't keep him? "What happened to it's always going to be him, huh?"
"Jesus Christ," Steve says, incredulous, and Eddie kind of wants to cry a little because he knows that Steve has started saying that more because of all the time they've spent together. "You were listening to me and Robin? What the fuck, man, you still think it's fair to throw that at me?"
"Fuck you, Steve, I know it wasn't a lie when you said that. Am I so fucking easy to just stop wanting, or are you that fucking fickle?"
"Eddie, goddamn, is this - were you testing me? Is this you lashing out at me again? Because I can't, okay, not about this, I can't-" he cuts off, one hand scrubbing over his face. "I told you, I can't."
Oh.
Oh fuck.
"Steve, no, I wasn't teasing, I - it was a real question."
Steve stills, pausing right by a window. The light of the moon catches on him, highlighting parts of him in pale silver while the rest of him is warmed from the soft yellow of the living room lamp. "Seriously?"
"Come on, Steve. I just picked a fight with you instead of asking what you meant, and you're surprised I'm not sure you still want me anymore?"
Eddie can hear Steve breathing out, then in, then back out again, watches as he lets some of the tension bleed out of his body. "I think I picked some of that fight right back. I'm sorry, I just - all right, let's go back, and I'll listen without making assumptions, okay?"
Yeah, okay, Eddie can do that.
"Max told me what you said," Eddie starts again. "And it made me think about how smart you are." He wishes Steve were closer, so he could see his face better, at the same time as he wishes he couldn't see it at all. "How brave you are. How when you know what you want, you go for it, how you fight to keep it, how you own up when you make a mistake, how you work so hard to make all this work."
This is Eddie trying to be brave, he thinks. Trying to go for what he wants, to accept that they're going to have to work at this, that he's probably going to get hurt, that he has to trust that Steve will be willing to work past whatever it is that springs up.
It takes him a little too long, though, because after a few moments, Steve gently prompts, "Eddie?"
"Do you still want me?" he asks again. He didn't mean to, but it comes out anyway, all small and tentative.
"Eds," Steve breathes out. "I'm always going to want you."
He loves too much, and he gets it thrown back at him too often, Max had said, and Eddie swallows down the urge to ask him if he means it, if he'll still mean it the next time Eddie picks a fight, or every time he's an ass.
"I'm always going to want you, too," Eddie says.
Steve's hands twitch, and he looks like he's waiting for something - for a lie to show up on his skin, Eddie realizes, and Eddie knows he's going to have to do better than that.
"I want you," he says again. "Steve, I want you. I'll take you any way I can get you, but I just - this is stupid, I'm stupid. I'm making us both miserable because I was scared."
He's not surprised that's what gets Steve moving, and he comes over to sit by him on the couch.
"You're not stupid," Steve replies. "Not for being scared."
Eddie shakes his head. "No, but I am for giving into it. So I might get hurt, so what? I'm already hurting, wanting you so bad and not getting to have you, knowing you'd probably let me kiss you and not letting myself go for it."
Steve's looking at him, eyes all sharp and intense, like he's really listening to Eddie's every word, and hell if it doesn't make him feel just a little bit drunk on it.
"Talking with Max made me realize that I trust you. I trust you, with my life, with - fucking everything. I trust you to work through this with me, to figure out what works for us."
Steve runs a hand over his jaw, going up to pinch the bridge of his nose. "Yeah?" he asks after a moment. "You really - you want to do this?"
"So fucking much," Eddie says.
Steve's whole face lights up in a smile, and he leans in, one hand resting on Eddie's knee. "That mean I can kiss you now?"
Eddie barely manages to get out a please before Steve's other hand is sliding over his jaw, slipping back to push his fingers into his hair and cup the side of his face. Steve holds him there as he kisses him, and it's-
It's not Eddie's first kiss. But it's his first kiss that's ever really meant anything, and the soft brush of Steve's lips against his makes his heart stutter in his chest.
Steve gives a little hum, low in his throat, and then he's tilting his head to get a better angle, and holy shit.
Eddie pushes forward eagerly, deepening the kiss until they're both panting for breath, and even then they don't pull away. Their foreheads press together, lips parted and just barely touching as they share the same air. His eyes have closed at some point, but now he opens them to find Steve looking back at him, and Eddie smiles.
"How long do you think until Robin notices we haven't come up?" he asks.
"I'm okay with figuring that out," Steve replies, closing the tiny bit of distance between them to kiss him again.
I've got a pretty good handle on the outline for the rest of this now, so I'd say we've got about four more parts left!

a/n: lol, I wrote this Before MeetMyGang, so details regarding readers first time on a bike aren’t accurate anymore, buuut I don’t think anyone cares~:)
Before! › here! › after!
⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯✦
You’d admired Baji for a long time now.
He was scary, and strong enough to do anything he put his mind to. He prioritized the people important to him, and took everything involving his loved ones very seriously. He was gentle to creatures weaker than him, and took them under his protection. Baji was sincere and dedicated in everything he did.
Baji Keisuke wasn’t a bad guy. And you loved him so much.
Baji, on the other hand, was having a hard time coming to terms with how he felt about you.
But he couldn’t push down the wonderment you always left him feeling after an encounter. You were his friend, no question. But you were so fragile. Meeker than the punks he usually rode with.
Keisuke still couldn’t admit it, but you’d successfully stolen his heart.
“Dude, invite her out or something. It’s summer break, you won’t see her for another month.”
“I didn’t even say anything?” Baji glared questionably at his blond friend.
“Didn’t have do. You’ve been mopping around all week. Probably because—“
“Chose your next words carefully Matsuno,” Baji cut in monotone. Chifuyu puffed his cheeks. “Fine fine,” he backed off, stretching from his previous spot as Peke J’s bed. “See ya then.” He waved off, throwing his bag over his shoulder and headed to the door.
“Oi! What for?” Baji complained.
Sure he had a lot of better shit he could be doing with his time. He could go to Akihabara for the weekend while his mom was gone. He could ride out anywhere he really wanted to and enjoy the summer time he earned. That you helped him earn.
“Why, i thought you were too busy moping around to notice.” Chifuyu joked without malice. After, he quipped his brand new phone out with a wide grin. “And if you’re ever so curious, Y/nnchan just invited me out to meet at the cat cafe.~”
The first division captain stared at his vice underling with a deep mix of emotion. He could identify one of those complicated feelings as jealousy.
You asked to hang out with Chifuyu? Baji looked over at the vibrant screen of Chifuyu’s phone, barely making out your name. Pink and blue bubbles littered the screen. “When did you get her number in the first place?”
“Not too many of the guys have phones, so Mom, Ryoko and Y/n are my only contacts right now.”
Baji suddenly really wanted a cellphone.
“So, you coming or what?” Chifuyu asked, throwing Baji a balled up pair of black socks. “Why would I come?” He grumbled out.
“Cause she asked me to invite you~” Chifuyu grinned wickedly. His heart stopped for a moment.
“Hurry up or I’m gonna tell her you bailed!” Chifuyu yelled before darting out of the apartment. “Damnit! Hold on you son of a bitch!”
⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯✦
When the two managed to get to the cat cafe, they were already ten minutes early for the agreed meeting time. “Oh, party of three? Booth 9, enjoy!” The waitress purred once they entered. Confused, they looked over and saw you looking over the menu.
“You’re early!” Chifuyu laughed when he was first to enter the booth. “Chi! Yeah, haha, I was here when I texted you actually.” Your eyes darted over to Baji, happiness spread across your features. “Kei! So happy you came!”
Baji avoided making eye contact, sure to out himself shy if he did. “The hell? Cute~,” Chifuyu laughed again, his comment clearly coming off as more than friendly. Baji felt heat prickle his ears at this point. Was he trying to provoke him?
You laughed at Chifuyu’s comment, and held the menu out to the both of them. “I ordered a few appetizers already, the frushi is actually the specialty of the day!” You chirped along the menu with excitement.
Well, if nothing else, Chifuyu wasn’t a liar. You really were so cute. A little weird and outgoing, but so, undeniably cute.
“I’ll probably get an order of gyoza.” Baji thought out loud, lazily holding the menu in front of him.
Chifuyu ordered a blue ramune poured over a lemonlime soda.
Baji ordered a black cherry soda with a subtle vanilla cream mix rested at the bottom.
And after much deliberation, you decided on a rich brown-sugar milk tea.
“It’s a little surprising how much cats love you, Kei.” You admitted. “No kidding, strays far and wide can’t get enough of him. Baji actually always leaves his bedroom window open for—” Chifuyu went along praising his captain, ultimately leading to his embarrassed captain to cut him off abruptly.
“Oh yeah!! Didn’t you say you had a cat, Chi?” You asked.
“Oh yeah, Peke J! He’s adventurous, and visits with Baji more than he’s actually home. I bet he’d really like you.”
Baji just couldn’t put his finger on it. Chifuyu was just being friendly, yet somehow he was getting under his skin like never before. “Yaknow, Baji and I actually talked about opening a pet shop in the future!”
You beamed in response to the topic, gaze fluttering between the two delinquents. “A pet store?” You asked, nibbling on a gyoza.
Chifuyu glanced over at Baji, hoping he’d jump into the conversation.
This was his role after all, the perfect natural wingman.
Unfortunately, Baji only saw the situation for its surface level; Chifuyu was blatantly flirting with you for the both of them, Right in front of him.
Baji glared a little bit, and shrugged. “Nah, Mikey‘s talkin about seriously applying himself to motor racing. Sounds sweet,” he grinned his canines.
Chifuyu gaped at his answer. Was he trying to look cool? Was he seriously that oblivious to romantic ques?
Yet, ever the same look of amazement, you smiled back. “Motor racing?! I totally forgot that’s like, your guys’ thing, motor bikes!” You visibly prickle with excitement. “I’ve never been close to one actually. They’re really loud and kinda scary from what I see, but you guys use them all the time right?”
The both of them gaped at your reaction. “They seem pretty cool.” You laughed almost awkwardly, Almost as if to let out a hint, but ready to retract at any sign of uncomfortability.
Chifuyu looked at his captain, the stars glaring over his vision obvious. “Baji’s bike is sick! A Suzuki GSX250E! With an attached second seater. He won’t admit it but he saved up a bunch so I could ride alongside him to Toman meetings.” He praised his captains generosity openly again.
“Yer full of shit,” Baji laughed, “I had that thing way before you.”
“How thoughtful! Chifuyu’s pretty new to the gang, so you haven’t saved up enough for a bike yet, right?” You asked Chifuyu, the eye contact you shared making Baji feel a little … possessive? “I’m doing very good saving up for one!” Chifuyu perked up, eager. The only other person he could brag these hobbies with was Kazutora, after all.
Tumblr media
“You have a bike model in mind?” You asked, tilting your head, as you allowed an all-white rag doll cat affectionately demand your attention. Baji rose a brow, your choice of words making him curious. “How much you know about bikes?”
You giggled sheepishly, hiding your face in the cats fur. “J-just a little. I just, got a little curious, s-so I learned a few neat facts,” you waved this off quickly, and drew the attention back to one of them. “I really don’t know much besides what a book would tell you. Are you trying to shop for speed or style?”
To you, it seemed like a genuinely honest and curious question. To them, they had finally found something to hold over your smart little head. Something they knew all about, and for you to be clueless!
“Baji goes for speed. I’m thinking as long as I can keep up, I might as well aim for something flashy!” Chifuyu admitted with pride.
“Oi, don’t talk down about my Goki like that! It looks cool as hell,” Baji kicked the blonde affectionately.
“Actually, that makes me wonder, how do you guys even get your bikes? They’re like, triple digit thousand yen. Do you all just have jobs or something?” You asked while more felines covered what was visible of you.
Chifuyu plucks one of the cats what began to claw biscuits into your exposed skin, and cradled it in his arms lovingly.
Baji struggled, stuffing his face with a third gyoza. “My bike didn’t really ride when I first found it. A real piece of junk. But I brought the pieces to Shin and asked if he could make it drivable.”
“Guess it wasn’t in that bad o’f shape. Polished up the framework and helped put the parts together, baby was driving the next two months.”
“So Mikey’s brother spotted you the cost to restore your shitty bike?” Chifuyu teased. “Asshole! I paid with physical labor for that bike!” Baji pushed.
Putting the context clues together, you asked without filter, “Shin sounds like a nice guy, helping you restore a bike so willingly. Maybe he could give you tips, Chifuyu.”
The atmosphere got deathly quiet.
No one wanted to say anything, evident on Baji’s hardened expression and Chifuyu being visibly nervous. “He’s dead,” Baji said finally, no indication to continue.
“Oh… I’m sorry to hear that,” you say quietly, briefly lowering your head to show your condolences. “Based on how you speak of him, Mikey seems to take after him. What does he drive?” You asked, making an attempt to sweep the rough atmosphere away.
To you, it seemed as though the subject of Shinichiro’s passing was an unpleasant one. You felt it impolite to pry.
Baji looks you over, noticing your calm demeanor as you handled the tense answer he just gave. He was used to people acting nervous around him if he wasn’t careful. But he liked feeling as though he didn’t need to filter his words to appear kinder, when he simply didn’t want to talk about it. Baji really liked the way you always treated him so kindly, accepting his sharp attitude without taking it personally.
“A Honda. CB250t.” Baji answered without reluctance. He didn’t mean to come off prickly, but the pause insinuated otherwise.
You began thinking something over in your head, before a cat pounced to get your attention, making you shriek with laughter.
“Sorry sorry,” you apologize to the jealous cat, divvying out a generous handful of treats. This distraction seemed to serve as a middle point of the lunch. Drinks were about finished, food demolished, and the sun was still high in the sky.
Chifuyu yawned, and stretched his limbs. “Way too nice to just go back home though,” he admitted, tossing his head in Baji’s direction. “What’s everybody else doing?”
Baji reciprocated the yawn, and rested his head on the back of the chair. His eyes were focused on you as you played so joyously with the cats. He couldn’t get over just how cute he thought you were. He’d be damned if he said that out loud though.
Not realizing he had went silent, Baji lost himself in through, gaze softened your way. He was so used to his obnoxious glasses blocking this lovestruck look, he found himself doing it again without them.
Chifuyu took note of this, getting mild second hand embarrassment from how oblivious Baji was.
Chifuyu wanted to feel grateful that, at least, you were too distracted by the cats to notice his captain’s affectionate stare. Except, when he glanced over at you, Chifuyu saw a twinkle of something in your eye.
You knew Baji was staring at you. And by acting as though you didn’t notice, you soak in the unintentional affection, with a blush and a smile.
Chifuyu felt his heart rate Racing at this point. This was The Most silent, yet intense, atmosphere of backhanded flirting, without so much as eye contact to fuel the flames.
The waitress had made her rounds by this point, clearing the table of everything, and asking you three if you would like anything to go. “I’d like to order two shortcakes, and three lemon iced teas please! One yuzu, rose, and lavender.” You agreed, while Chifuyu added a specialty lemonade on the to go order.
“I don’t have anything else to do,” you admitted while the three of you gathered your bearings. “Any plans?” You asked, giving no credit to Chifuyu’s exact same question that’d went ignored earlier.
Baji shruggled. “Nah. All that talk about bikes for me itching to ride, though.” He smirked.
Baji liked you, he really did. This whole time, he had made an effort to push you to not get too close. But this moment, covered in cat hair, disheveled and smiling so affectionately. Baji couldn’t help but ask,
“How bout it? You think modified bikes are cool, how bout taking a ride on one?”
The way your face lit up at his question blinded the two delinquents. “Really?!” You asked, clearly excited. “Well don’t get all misty eyed!” Baji blared back, embarrassed.
Once the three of you had gotten your to go orders, you all made way back to their apartment complex to pick up Baji’s bike and keys.
Being the sweet little thing you were, you bashful admitted the to-go order you placed was actually meant for their mothers. “Moms like it when you get them a little treat, to show your gratitude!” You reasoned with their confused response.
The first stop came to Chifuyu’s apartment, since it was two floors below Baji’s.
Chifuyu sighed, a little embarrassed at the way you chatted so openly and casually with his mom.
“She probably thinks y/n’s my girlfriend, she always jumps to conclusions like that.”
It was quiet when Baji didn’t give a reaction. He’d planned on simply waiting patiently for you to finish. He could help but notice the way you chatted this same way with his own mom.
“Guess that wouldn’t be so bad.” Chifuyu whispered by accident. Your conversation with Chifuyu’s mom died out from Keisuke’s ears, the only thing he could register was Chifuyu’s whispered words.
He knew he was overthinking it, so like everything else, he pushed the thought down, even if it did bother him.
“Well, I wanted to drop off the lavender tea and cake! I’m glad to know you’re well!” You went to wave your goodbye. “Finally we can go!” Baji grinned, hyping up his spirit to ride. “Not so fast,” you shook your head at him. “Still gatta drop off the cake and tea I got for your mom!”
Baji was stunned once again. He really did try having patience with you, but damn were you making it difficult. Without argument though, the two boys followed you to the sixth floor.
“Y/n!! I’m so happy to see you,” Ryoko sighed with contentment when she’d successfully tucked under her arm in a big hug. “Jeez, glad she doesn’t greet me that way,” Baji mumbled to Chifuyu, who laughed in response. “Cake and tea? I knew you were my favorite kid,” she took a sip of the yuzu lemon iced tea.
“Hate to remind you that I’m an only child, hag,” Baji bit back. “Gonna change; the cat hair’s starting to itch.” He rolled his eyes, leaving Chifuyu alone with the girls. “So, how’s my second favorite kid?” Ryoko asks with comical volume, aimed in Chifuyu’s direction. Chifuyu chuckled at the muffled “shut up!” that came out of Baji’s room, holding up the keys to Baji’s Suzuki.
“She’s never been on a bike before, so Baji’s gonna take Y/n riding before the meet up tonight.”
“Oi, Kei! You be careful!” She yelled seriously, sashaying over to the spare coat closet. “Do you have an extra helmet?” She asked, earning an annoyed grunt from her teenage son.
“Yes, I have an extra helmet-“ he tried agreeing with her, “is it clean?” She asked, making Baji pause his response. “…Who was the last to wear it again?”
Ryoko sighed, and pulled down a dark purple cycle helmet. “Please wear this,” she asked you, holding the sturdy plastic into your hand. “I used to wear it when I’d go out riding. ‘Long as you and Kei stay friends, use it for me, alright?”
Needlessly sentimental, you hugged her as you’d accepted the helmet before your exit.
“Where do you usually keep your bike?” you asked, aware that parking one’s bike at home can be dangerous. “Theres a cheap parking garage down the street.” Baji nodded in the direction of the garage when the turn came up.
Once making it in, the three of you circled the bike in admiration. “It’s nice,” you hummed, modestly squatting to checkout the details of the bike. “It’s okay if I touch right?” You asked.
Nervously, Baji squats beside you and made a gesture to show it was fine to do so. Ever so gently, you traced your fingers along the exhaust pipe, as though you would peel away the metal to look further inside. Quietly, you hummed, and examined the parts most visible. “It’s big though, I don’t think my feet can reach the peddle..”
Both Baji and Chifuyu laughed. “You thought i was gonna just let you ride my bike like that?” He asked as though it wasn’t even a consideration. “Huh? Is that not what you meant earlier?” You asked, embarrassed. Baji laughed again, barely making it to his feet.
“You dork! I was just gonna drive you around some backroads.” He ruffled your hair roughly. You gave a sheepish “oh” before looking away in embarrassment. “W-well, that’s fine.” You said, a little shyer this time.
Chifuyu’s eye glinted from your wit.
Chifuyu could read you like the back of his hand, a feat Baji was clearly oblivious to. By acting shy, you automatic lit a flame of nervousness under Keisuke’s idea of a platonic activity. You were hinting at the exposure—tiptoeing that line of flirtation neither of you quite crossed.
And Baji fell for your tricks like a lovesick fool, suddenly bashful and confused for as to why.
“What ‘bout you Chi?” You asked, lining the scene with a comfortable middle ground between both boys. Body language gave away you still tried including Chifuyu, as to not kick him out as an unnecessary third wheel.
“Kinda itchy with cat hair, honestly. Think I’m gonna take a shower and check out what Ryusei’s doing. Catch ya later?” He asked.
It was Chifuyu’s turn to finally let go of the reins; he’d secretly initiated the date, lead the conversation, and got you two to this point. His job was complete. Satisfied, he turned to walk away. “Wait,” you pulled on Chifuyu’s sleeve, subconsciously making the boy lean into your cupped hand. “Thanks for today, it meant a lot to me.” And with an innocent kiss to the corner of his lip and cheek, you doddled back to Baji, who’d bucking his heel against the kick Stand.
Chifuyu wouldn’t stop thinking about that chast kiss you gave him. How soft it was. How precise your movemeets were— you had Meant to kiss him where you had. Not enough to consider romantic, but definitely a forewarning that it could have been. He was swimming in those thoughts, even when he watched you and Baji plow down the street happily.
Was he seriously falling in love with his Boss’s crush?

How's your sister?
Nikolai x f!Verkov!reader
Nikolai falls in love with his best friend's sister, much to Dominik's (apparent) annoyance.
I've mixed stuff from the books and from the show which is why they're Verkov's (I don't think Dominik has a last name in the books but someone let me know if he does).
This is also an apology for Golden Boy (please forgive me, part two will be out soon).
Word count: 3k (It wasn't meant to be this long I got carried away oops)
Warnings: mentions of being shot, people getting punched (really only Nikolai, poor guy), swearing, a very fast-moving relationship at the end

Nikolai met his best friend when he was 9 years old.
He didn't know it at the time, but Dominik would be his rock in the tidal wave that was life at court, and the two boys would be inseparable, no matter how far they were from each other.
They were sat in class, Dominik terrified of every movement, jumping and startled at any loud noise or harsh word, and when Nikolai's misbehaviour led to Dominik's pain, the prince knew that he had to change his attitude, the kindness in his heart outweighing his love for pranks. After that day, Nikolai was the perfect student, attentive and listening, although he quickly became friends with Dominik, creating a secret code to talk to each other in lessons, and spending the rest of their time running around in fields with the each other, covering themselves in dirt and grass stains.
When the two boys were 12, Nikolai had his first proper family meal at Dominik's house. He had snuck out in the evening, going unnoticed by everyone, and knocked on their door. Dominik had answered, giddy with joy that his friend had made it, but embarrassed at the state of their farm compared to the luxury that Nikolai was used to. Nikolai didn't mind at all, complimenting every detail and feeling more at home in this run-down house than he ever had in the palace, and Mrs Verkov's cooking was so good he thought he might have died and gone to heaven. He did the washing up, despite the family's protests, then reluctantly let Dominik help with the drying. His older brother was soon to go join the army, as Nikolai found out that night, and Dominik was worried for his safety.
It wasn't until years later that Nikolai would be able to help their family, but for now they were the ones helping him, giving him an escape and a place to just be himself (although Dominik's parents kept calling him 'moi tsarevich', and refused to use any other name).
One summer evening, the boys now 14, Nikolai was having dinner with Dominik's family again, laughing as he set out the cutlery and joking with his friend. A knock sounded on the door, startling the prince and making him drop a fork. Dominik rushed to the door, practically bouncing off of the walls, and as he bent down to retrieve the implement he listened to the sound of excited voices by the door. He had barely finished standing up and brushing the dust off of his knees when Dominik returned, pulling a girl along by her hand and chucking her bag in a corner.
"Dom! Be careful with that, it's got all my stuff in it!" she scolded lightheartedly, and Saints her voice was the most magical thing he had ever heard. She poked his friend in the side, laughing when he recoiled, and Nikolai decided that her laugh was even more magical than her voice.
"Oh, this is my friend, Nikolai," Dominik said, gesturing towards the golden haired boy. "Nikolai, this is my sister, Y/n. She just got back from boarding school in the south." Nikolai stared dumbly at her, face going pink. She was beautiful.
"Hi," she said, sticking her hand out. He took it, offering a shaky smile.
"Hi," he replied. "Wait." He furrowed his brow. "Are you sure he's your brother? Because I'm not seeing any resemblance here. I mean, you're gorgeous and he's... Dom." At her laugh, he flushed more deeply, and realised he was still holding her hand. It was warm, and soft, and he never wanted to let go.
She leaned in close, speaking in a loud whisper. "I'm fully convinced we're not actually related and he was swapped with my real brother, because you're totally right, I am stunning."
"You know that I can hear you both, right? I am stood right here. But please, by all means, go ahead." A wicked gleam entered his expression, and he opened his mouth to speak again. "Maybe I should talk about the time that Nikolai-" he was cut off by a hand slapping over his mouth, eyes going wide with silent laughter as he took in Nikolai's panicked expression.
"Please. I'm begging you, no embarrassing stories." Dominik nodded, still holding back his laugh, and Nikolai slowly removed his hand.
"I'll consider it. I'm expecting you to make it up to me at some point, you bastard."
"Language!" his mother shouted from the second room, and all three of them burst into giggles, with Y/n snorting loudly. "Dinner's ready too!" They made their way to the table, Nikolai engineering it so that he was sat next to Y/n after getting another set of cutlery for her. They talked about anything and everything, learning things about each other and pelting mash at Dominik when he commented on how close they already were.
"How come you go to boarding school?" he asked at one point, curiosity getting the better of him.
"My aunt is on the governor's board, but she refuses to send us any money. Luckily for me, she believes that 'all young ladies should have a proper education'," - at her fake posh voice, Nikolai laughed - "so she convinced them to take me in on a scholarship. Don't have to pay for a thing."
When dinner was over, washing up done and goodbyes said, Nikolai didn't want to leave. He'd had fun, more than he had in a while (which had absolutely nothing to do with the fact that he had a crush on his best friend's sister), and he knew that tomorrow would be gruelling, filled with meetings and extended time with old ministers. The walk home was cold, the sun having set hours ago and clouds covering the night sky. When he went to bed that night, he couldn't stop thinking about Y/n.
~~~
The next time Nikolai saw Dominik, he immediately asked "How's your sister?" and his friend groaned.
"No, absolutely not. I am not doing this with you," he wagged a finger in Nikolai's direction, walking off in the direction of the lake, the prince jogging to catch up.
"Not doing what? I'm just asking a question," he said.
"You're not though, because I saw you the other night, chatting her up and everything, and as much as I love you, Nik, I also love my sister."
Nikolai spluttered, searching for the right words to convince his friend that his sister was Nikolai's soulmate (maybe a little over the top, but then again Nikolai was always one to have a flair for the dramatic).
"I was not chatting her up! And if I was, I would have done it so well we'd already be married, thank you!"
"You have far too much confidence in your abilities, Nikolai. You were chatting her up, and you were doing it badly." They reached the lake, sitting down on the grassy bank and going silent for a few minutes. Dominik sighed. "She's fine, if you must know. Asked where you were yesterday, since we were having a whole family meal again."
"Really? She asked about me?" He perked up at that, mind already racing with thoughts of her.
"Yes, she did. But not in a 'I want to marry him' way, just in a 'I'm a nice person and I'm curious' way, so don't get your hopes up." Nikolai nodded, smile on his face. He couldn't stop thinking about it all day, or the next, or in fact for the rest of the week, and when he next saw her, he'd planned everything out so meticulously, nothing could go wrong.
~~~
He face-planted in front of her.
He hadn't meant to, obviously, but he'd been distracted at seeing her in the Palace gardens, and had lost his footing, tripping over his own feet. She'd seen him walking and waved, shocking him and making him fall.
Rushing over and very clearly trying not to laugh, she helped him up, asking if he was okay.
"I'm alright, Y/n. Thought I was going to step on... a frog," he winced at his terrible excuse, then at the state of his clothes (state: covered in mud), but she didn't seem to mind. "How come you're here?"
"School trip. Something about how one day we'll all be in court if we're lucky, and marry rich. Personally I think prof just wants to get a good look at all the fancy women, since he's apparently a 'ladies' man'," she jabbed her thumb over her shoulder as she gestured to her teacher and Nikolai laughed. "Are you sure you're okay? Can't have been a soft landing."
"Seriously, I'm fine. I've had worse, like when Dominik shoved me in the river that one time."
"Well, as long as you're alright. Wouldn't want to damage your pretty face now, would we?" she said, then turned and walked off, a skip in her step as she rejoined her friend. He stared at her retreating form, blush creeping up his neck and onto his face as he took in her words.
Did she just...?
How come he was the hopeless one, and she was the one flirting? He chalked it down to the fact he'd fallen over, and wasn't quite himself because of it, then brushed himself off slightly and kept walking.
~~~
When Nikolai was 16, he was obligated to take his year of service in the army, and Dominik went with him. Instead of taking the usual position of power, Nikolai joined the infantry, becoming a normal soldier with the people of his country and building up connections with them.
For the past two years, every time he had seen Dominik (which had lessened the past year after Dominik's family were banned from the Palace) he had always started off with the question "How's your sister?" and although he had said it was just a joke now, Dominik knew his friend better. He always rolled his eyes in response, and eventually smiled about it too, after the night before they left for the army.
Nikolai had come over after the celebration at the Palace, sneaking out in the dark despite having been caught by Vasily the year before, not needing light since he knew the way like the back of his hand. Arriving at the farm, he knocked on the door, catching his breath for a moment.
He promptly lost it, however, when Y/n answered the door, juggling the handle and a towel as she dried her hair. She'd been back at school the past two years, staying there over the summer, so he hadn't seen her, but Saints, had she gotten more beautiful? She'd clearly just washed her hair, robe tied tightly around her and her hair wet and limp around her face, but Nikolai couldn't help but think of her as stunning.
"Are you going to come in, or keep standing there with your mouth open?"
He quickly shut it, then the door behind him, blushing (he seemed to do that a lot around her) at having been caught. He could never tell if she felt the same way or if that was just how she acted, but he hadn't seen her with anyone else to know.
"Aren't we all banned from seeing you, or something?" she asked, and he nodded.
"Everybody's having a party about me being sent off into certain doom, so it was easy to get out. I won't stay long, I just wanted to see your parents before I leave tomorrow."
"Well we're all in here, sorry about this," she gestured to herself. "Just had a bath since I got back from school about an hour ago. Carriage was boiling, I was practically sweating my tits off in there." He malfunctioned slightly as he tried to not think of her in the bath (it didn't work), laughing belatedly at her final comment. She looked at him weirdly, smiling in confusion, then moved into the family room.
"Nik! What are you doing here?!" Dominik jumped up, swiftly embracing his friend in a hug so tight he thought his lungs might burst.
"Couldn't resist. Besides, how's your sister?" the last part was whispered, a smirk on Nikolai's face.
"Why don't you ask her yourself, dumbass, given she is also in the room."
"Ask who what?" Y/n piped up, picking up on the fact the boys were having a conversation.
"Yeah Nik, what did you wanna ask?"
"Oh, just... How are you, Y/n? Haven't seen you in a while, is all. You still look gorgeous, by the way," he finished with a wink, revelling in her faint blush and small laugh.
"Thanks, Nik. I'm alright, school's horrible, though. Not that I'm complaining, mother, I just don't enjoy having to sit with a pole up my back for 10 hours every day." Nikolai and Dominik winced at the idea, and the prince could sympathise. He'd had the same training when he was younger, and eventually it got so bad he sat with such perfect posture the broom was never seen again (and definitely not because he'd burned it).
Dominik's mother stood, wrapping Nikolai in a hug similar to the one he'd received from her son not too long ago, and Nikolai mourned his possibly bruised ribs. His father did the same, slapping both boys on the back and congratulating them, wishing them the best.
Nikolai sat with them for another twenty minutes (at the request of Mrs Verkov, and he couldn't really say no when she presented a cup of tea), then got up to leave, saying his goodbyes to Dominik's family and promising to find his friend tomorrow.
"I'll walk you out," Y/n said, and he followed her out to the front door, waving at her parents and Dominik.
She stood nearby as he shrugged his jacket on, then as he turned to leave, she pulled him into a hug, and he realised she was crying.
"Promise me you'll be careful?" she sniffed, wiping the tears off of her cheeks when she pulled back from his chest. He moved her hand away, brushing his thumb over her face in a softer attempt to remove the tears.
"Promise."
"Okay. You'll... you'll come back to me- to us, right? Alive and in one piece?" His heart leapt at the idea that she wanted him to come back to her, and he nodded, hand still holding her face.
"Alive and in one piece. I'll come back to you, I promise." She nodded, then hesitated for a split second before pushing herself up onto her tiptoes and kissing him on the cheek.
"I'll see you in a year then, Kolya." And she turned and walked back into the other room.
"See you in a year," he muttered, fingers pressing to the space where her lips had been.
~~~
When Nikolai returned from the army, he redoubled his previous efforts to get the court to like him, becoming even more charming and likeable than he had been before. He told himself it was because he was the spare, and therefore needed some way of garnering support within a group of people that were more likely to favour his brother, but really it was because he'd heard that Y/n was getting married.
He hadn't seen her since he'd come back, but when he had met up with Dominik a few days ago, he asked his usual "How's your sister?" expecting the normal rolling of eyes and vague response. Instead, he received a wary look, and the knowledge that she was engaged. Nikolai had gone numb inside, and had thrown himself into becoming the person that court wanted him to be, all the way up until he had gone to University.
Running away and becoming Sturmhond was one of the best decisions he had ever made, but he thought about Y/n every day. Sailing the True Sea had been a dream they'd had together, and now that he was doing it without her, he couldn't help but feel the pang of longing for her company, married or not. He couldn't bring himself to find out anything about her life, not wanting to die of heartbreak when he found out about her incredibly handsome husband, their five children and a dog (maybe a little dramatic, but still).
Then Alina Starkov had turned up, and turned his world upside down.
After spending time with her hunting the Sea Whip, he figured that a back up plan would be needed, and decided that an alliance between the Lantsov throne and the powerful Sun Summoner would be beneficial. She would make an excellent leader, and in time he was sure they could grow to love each other.
Then he'd had to reveal his identity when they crash landed in the Ravkan first army, and she'd punched him in the face.
Dominik came over, laughing at his friend who was now clutching his nose, but bringing him into a tight hug all the same.
"Long time no see, how have you been?" he asked.
"Oh, same old, same old. Sailing around, destroying enemy ships, tracking mythical sea monsters, the usual. How's your sister?"
Dominik rolled his eyes, a smile forming on his face. Nikolai had told him that Y/n had kissed his cheek when they were in the army, gushing about it and how hopeless he was, and Dominik had agreed. It wasn't long after that his friend, albeit reluctantly, decided he wouldn't mind having Nikolai as a brother, and had warmed up to the idea of his best friend and sister being together.
"She's alright. You could always ask her yourself, though." Nikolai frowned, not understanding his meaning.
"Why do you want to know about his sister?" Alina cut in, still mad about the betrayal but curiosity outweighing it.
Dominik laughed. "Because he's hopelessly in love with her. Seriously, I can't get him to shut up about how she's 'the most beautiful girl I've ever seen', or how 'she's the-'" Nikolai shoved him, and Dominik stopped talking to prevent himself from falling over, breaking off into more loud laughter.
"Shut up," he muttered, face going red. Alina was smirking, and had apparently (for now) gotten over her earlier fury. "What did you mean, ask her myself? She's off in some country house with her rich husband, isn't she?"
"Nope. Never actually got married. Not when he found out I didn't like riding a horse sidesaddle."
Nikolai whipped round at the new voice, then stared in shock at the woman in front of him, looking somehow even more beautiful than the day he'd left her.
"Y/n," he said, the word spoken almost like a prayer. "You're... you're here. Wait, why are you here?" She laughed lightly, and Saints he'd missed that sound.
"Joined the army. As a medik, don't worry. I'm not actually on the front lines or anything, I just stay back here, tending to the wounded. Speaking of wounded people, who punched you? Because your nose is bleeding a little bit."
"I did, sorry," Alina spoke up, and Y/n just smiled, shaking her head.
"He probably deserved it, to be honest. I don't know what he did, but I'm sure I would have done the same."
Great, now they were bonding over the desire to punch him in the face. Y/n walked over, using a scrap of cloth to wipe the blood off his face, then throwing her arms around him in a hug.
"I've missed you, Kolya."
"I missed you too."
She pulled back, inspecting his face for a few moments. He was nervous, butterflies fluttering in his stomach as he realised that the last time they'd been this close, she'd kissed him on the cheek. He didn't have to worry about that this time, though, since she pulled even further away, and before he could miss her warmth, she slapped him.
"What was that for?!" He held his face for the second time in the last ten minutes, looking at her incredulously as she stood with her hands on her hips.
Pointing a finger at him, she said "For getting shot, you dipshit! And for leaving without telling me, and for never writing!" Before he could apologise, however, she brought her hands up to his face and kissed him on the lips. He froze, arms hanging in the air awkwardly and eyes open wide, then relaxed, bringing his arms around her waist and closing his eyes as he kissed her back. He was just about to slip his tongue in when a very obvious cough sounded from his left, and he reluctantly pulled away to see Dominik watching with a disgusted look.
"If you're going to suck face, please do it where I can't see you. I do not need to ever see my best friend and my sister making out ever again, thanks." He shuddered, then pretended to gag.
"Okay," Y/n replied, and before Nikolai could do anything, she'd grabbed his arm and was dragging him off to a tent. When they were inside, he realised it was her tent, seeing the little decorations that were so completely her. She stopped abruptly, causing him to crash into her back. "Shit, sorry, I didn't think I was gonna have anyone in here, to be honest, so it's a mess. Let me just-"
"Darling, you know I've seen Dominik's tent, right? This is perfection compared to the mess he creates," Nikolai cut her off, stopping her from tidying the space. "What was the kiss for?"
"You- what?! Saints, Nikolai, I thought you were meant to be smart?" She pinched the bridge of her nose. "Because I love you, idiot. I always have." He gaped at her, before remembering himself and closing his mouth.
"You have?"
"Yeah. Dom was pissed when he found out I liked you, though. Not sure why, given how close you two are. Thought he would have been glad to have you as an official member of the family, as an actual brother. But yes, I have loved you since that night we talked about what we would do if we were free, and you spoke about it as if we were both going. I knew I was a goner then, because of how easily you talked about your future as though I would always be a part of it. So yeah, I love you, Nikolai Lantsov. That's what the kiss was for."
"I love you too. I would have taken you with me, on the True Sea, like we'd planned, but I thought... well I thought you were married, so I didn't ask. Also it wasn't really planned, I just had an opportunity so I took it and-" he was cut off by her mouth on his, and she was smiling into the kiss.
"I get it, Kolya, you don't need to explain, alright? But next time I'm expecting an invite, no excuses."
"Of course. I love you," he said again, smiling broadly. He would quite happily spend the rest of his life telling her those three words over and over again, doing nothing else, and having no regrets. The next two words that came out of his mouth he hadn't planned to say, but they happened anyway.
"Marry me."
She froze in place, and Nikolai worried that he'd gone too far, opening his mouth to take back the words.
"Yes."
Now it was his turn to freeze, seconds later breaking into a grin as he picked her up and spun her around, kissing her when he set her down.
"Wait," she said, brow furrowed, and his heart skipped a beat in fear. "What about the court? They'll never accept me."
"I don't care. I love you, and I'm not wasting another minute of my life being without you. Besides, it'll be good for them. It's not like you're uneducated, you went to a fancy boarding school. And if that's not enough we can come up with some bullshit story about how we're marrying to 'unite the different classes of Ravka' and it'll be beneficial for keeping the 'commoners' on side," he used the same fake posh voice she had all those years ago at the dinner table, and she giggled, nodding as he made his argument. "We'll know that we're marrying for love, and so will the people that most matter, like your family. They're the only opinions I care about, alright?"
"Alright." She was smiling widely, joy written all over her face as she took in his words. Seconds later, fear crossed her features. "Oh fuck."
"What? What is it?" He panicked, thinking she was already having second thoughts.
"Dominik. He's going to freak out when we tell him. Poor boy can only just handle us kissing, what's he going to do when we're married?" Nikolai laughed, loud and booming, hands coming to hold her waist.
"He'll just have to deal with it. He dealt with all the pining for years, I'm sure he'll be fine."
"Pining? You were pining for me? Aw, Kolya, that's adorable!"
"Yeah yeah," he grumbled. "Like you weren't also pining for me, darling."
~~~
When they emerged from the tent a while later, holding hands and blushing, speaking to each other in soft whispers, Dominik could only smile affectionately, having overheard the whole conversation.
"Idiots. I've been planning this wedding since they met."
if I had to be sad you have to be sad too
WARNINGS: angst, angst yall, no happy ending (lmao), a couple mentions of the name Y/n, written with tall Latina reader in mind, depression from Suguru?, spelling mistakes were made (that’s for damn sure)
Tumblr media
“Suguru!” you say with a smile as you finally catch up to him
Your boyfriend turns around and gives you a weak smile. You noticed he lost weight, hasn’t been sleeping well, and has been quieter than usual. Every time you asked in concern, he would assure you he’s okay, which you never believed.
Especially after the incident with the Star Plasma Vessel. He was never the same ever since he took on the mission with Gojo, leaving you and Shoko behind as they took care of Rika.
You sigh, “Are you still free for later today? The new episode of Breaking Bad is coming out”
Suguru nods at your question. You can’t help but frown at Suguru’s lack of communication.
“Suguru, you know you can tell me what you’re feeling. You don’t have to keep it to yourself, please.”
Your boyfriend just smiles at you, “I’m fine, really. It’s the summer heat.”
You frown but decide not to pester him any longer. “Don’t forget, okay? My dorm at 7, don’t be late!” You say as you give him a quick kiss on the cheek and walk off to meet with Shoko.
Safe to say Geto never came to your dorm at 7.
You waited.
It was now 8.
You waited some more.
It was now 9.
You waited once again, occasionally glancing down at your phone for any message from Suguru. Nothing.
It was now 10.
You tried staying awake, just incase Suguru texted you. Your sleep got the best of you.
It was now the next morning.
As disappointed as you were, you just didn’t have the heart to be mad at him. Suguru wouldn’t do this on purpose.
You walk into the lounge area and see Suguru talking with Haibara. You wave at both of them and look to Suguru, who gave you a look as to say ‘sorry’.
Sighing, you took a seat next to Suguru, leaning your head against his shoulder.
Haibara kindly greeted you and asked what you would like from his upcoming mission with Nanami. You insisted he didn’t have to get anything but he wouldn’t take no as an answer. With a laugh, you said you would like something sweet, which happened to be the same answer as Geto. You both had Gojo in mind.
————-
Days passed and you hear the news of Haibara.
-
-
-
-
Suguru tells you he’s assigned on a mission and will gone for a couple of days.
“Do you want me to go with you?”
He smiles at you, “Nah, I’ll be fine. Once I return, we can watch that episode of Breaking Bad that I missed.”
You kiss Suguru softly, “I’ll be waiting.”
-
-
-
-
-
Days passed, with no sign of Suguru.
More days passed, and no sign of Suguru.
Even more days passed, and with an order of execution of Suguru Geto.
When Gojo had told you, you couldn’t believe it.
Suguru wouldn’t do that.
He wouldn’t do that.
He wouldn’t kill innocent people.
He wouldn’t kill his own parents.
He wouldn’t.
You knew him.
He wouldn’t.
You chose not to believe it, that was until Geto came face to face with you and told you himself.
“Suguru….,” you say in a whisper.
Suguru walked away from you, not turning to face you again.
He had left all of you. He had left Jujustu High Tech. He had left his friends. He had left Gojo. He had left Shoko. Most importantly, he left you.
-
-
-
-
-
-
It was now 2016.
You hadn’t seen Geto or heard of him since. You didn’t seem to care, at least that’s what you thought.
Alongside Gojo, you also became a teacher. While Gojo taught the first years, you taught the second years.
You also changed, significantly. Your short curly hair now grew in length; cascading near your ribs, you also grew taller, you fashioned a scar on your right eye from a curse years ago, and you matured.
You “moved on” from your former friend and boyfriend, Suguru Geto.
That was until you saw him on the school grounds, holding Yuta close and speaking to him with a smile.
You stood there, watching the interaction as Gojo placed a hand on your shoulder to knock you out of your trance.
Gojo speaks up, “Could you please stop preaching your crazy beliefs to my students.”
Suguru turned around as his hand was draped over Yuta. “Saturo, Y/n!”, he greeted the both of you casually, as if he hadn’t been off terrorizing non sorcerers.
You motion Maki, Inumaki, and Panda to get ready just incase.
Suguru continued on with his speech, not before insulting Maki, calling her the Zenin clans failure.
Maki, clearly angered at his words, drew her blade.
You walked up to them and step in between them, “Why are you here, Geto?”
He couldn’t help but eye you up and down, seeing how much you changed over the years.
Suguru laughed and closed his eyes, “What’s with the formalities, hmm?” he smiled and continued, “I’m here to declare war.”
-
-
-
-
-
-
You didn’t want it to end like this.
Not like this.
There wasn’t enough time.
Geto leaned against the wall, gripping his shoulder that was missing an arm. When he saw you looking at him, he couldn’t help but smile softly.
You walk to Geto and sit besides him, not having the heart to end him. You couldn’t. He was your first love, your first friend, your first everything.
“My love…” he whispered to you, “it’s okay to let go.”
Tears spilled from your eyes, “I can’t, Suguru.”
You turn to face him, his raven eyes looking at your light brown eyes. He could stare in them forever, if the world was so kind to let him do so.
“Were you happy?” you ask so quietly, you weren’t sure if Geto had even heard of you.
Suguru closed his eyes and leaned his head to your shoulder, “I was, but a part of me was hurting knowing you weren’t with me,” he confessed.
The tears never stopped, “I love you, Suguru.”
Suguru smiled at you; that smile that always made you gush; that smile that always let you know he was there for you; that smile that let you know you were both in it together; that smile that let you know he loved you.
“I love you, too.”
Those were the last words you heard fall from Geto Suguru’s lips.
He knew you had to kill him. You knew as well.
Insert song: ghostin by Ariana Grande
“I know you hear me when I cry, I try to hold it in at night, while you’re sleeping next to me, but it’s your arms that I need this time, look at the cards that we’ve dealt, if you were anybody else, probably wouldn’t last a day, every tear’s a rain parade from hell”
Synopsis: Daemon returns to King's Landing after ten years in exile, intent on rekindling his affair with Rhaenyra. He wasn't expecting you - the revelation changes everything.
Hello, everyone! AGAIN! Because this was originally a single chapter, I didn’t want to leave it on the cliffhanger I did with Chapter 6. Therefore, ya get a two-for-one deal today! YAY! Just got some edits to do of the remaining three chaps and then this instalment SHOULD be done and dusted. Thank you to my slap daddy @ewanmitchellcrumbs and my boo @randomdragonfires for graciously allowing me to yeet this at them in group chat!
TRIGGERS: incest, purity culture, violence, age gap.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Whenever something in his life goes wrong, the solution can be found in a brothel.
It is a precept that has ruled Daemon from the moment he had first seen a whore’s tits at the impressionable age of thirteen summers, Viserys having finally capitulated to setting him on the path to manhood. He’d found it between the thighs of a buxom redhead, or so he had thought; now, he’s not so sure. Nonetheless, he finds himself retreating to familiarity of fragrant burning oils and musk, of moans and sighs and the allure of gleaming flesh at times of struggle. It is where he had buried his vexation and frustration over his brother’s repeated refusals to take him seriously, where he had mourned the loss of his nephew, where he had spent the past ten years fucking away the anger and the guilt and the weight of everything he was.
It is where he has gone now, in the wake of that awful, senseless altercation with the Lord of the Reach after he had dared to—Hm. Don’t think of it. He’s not looking forward to the scolding his brother will give him when he returns.
Or, it occurs to him, what will come to light as a result of my actions.
That might be the very worst part of the whole affair. When the King goes hunting for a reason that his wayward brother would strike down a member of the nobility, he knows the event alone will not satisfy as a full account of what took place. For why would Daemon Targaryen come to blows over mere implication? And, for that matter, why would Daemon Targaryen be present at Lord Tyrell’s meeting with the Princess at all? From there, the web comes unbound, and he is discovered.
Fuck’s sake. This is not how he intended to broach the subject with Viserys.
The familiar sounds of breathy moans and slapping flesh fill the room as he sits upon the chaise, surveying the wares and nursing his fifth goblet of wine. He is pleasantly relaxed from the drink and the heady scent of fucking, the thrum of arousal warming his veins and pooling in his belly. It is not enough to coax a rise from within his breeches, but the ever-present stimulation is its own form of satisfaction. While his current associate—one of those on the fringes of his usual circle, an eager lad named Desmond or Desward or some such appellation—blathers on, Daemon idly casts his eyes around the room, taking in the abundance of unclothed forms, the roaming of hands and bouncing of breasts, the open-mouthed groaning of the whores as they earn their keep on their knees, against the wall, over the chair.
“… Which one do you like best, my Prince?”
He snaps back to attention at the direct inquiry from his companion. Desmond jerks his chin toward the figures in various stages of undress, cheap jewels glittering under the light of the chandelier.
A much nicer establishment this time around, Daemon muses. He doesn’t voice this aloud, however. “Hm. That one, perhaps.”
He lets his eyes linger on the taller whore, appreciating the dusky glow of her hair as it spirals ink-dark from her crown. She twists her body winningly upon realising he is watching her, biting her lip and tossing her head back to display the elegant line of her neck. She’s not to his tastes, but that is precisely her appeal.
“Thought you would’ve gone with that pale-haired girl there,” Desward says, pointing out the smaller, white-haired waif prancing about with her gown peeled down to her waist, modest tits springing with each lively step.
Daemon swallows. She reminds him of you. No. He doesn’t want to think of you, not after the way you had looked at him. “Explain,” he says coldly.
This man hadn’t been present for those key occasions in which his little entanglement with Rhaenyra had come up. So how has he come to such a conclusion on his own?
Desmond’s expression twists apprehensively. “I just… everyone knows of your taste for silver-haired maidens, milord.”
Everyone does, do they? He’s not surprised to hear the rumours circling of his predilection for maidens, but the distinction here is new. There’d never been enough common stock with Valyrian features in Westeros for such a preference to be made public knowledge; and talk of the misconduct that had gotten him banished had never been all that widespread. The only possible avenue of this latest speculation is…
Fucking Dargood.
Later, he thinks, striding toward the object of his interest. I’ll deal with him later.
His irritation boils his blood just enough to incite a twitch of intrigue from his cock as he casts his eye over her critically. She’s a pleasing enough shape, though the hair is too fine and the mouth too small. Good enough.
“I hope I am to your liking, my Prince,” she murmurs, pushing her shoulders back so that her form is bared a little more easily to his regard.
He grunts, eyeing the finely groomed mound that conceals his eve’s prize, and he cannot help but extend his hand to cup the plumpness of her, to trace a digit through silken petals to toy with the bud at the apex.
Either she’s had a customer already or she’s had her fun before venturing down, he mulls, rubbing the sticky wetness from her soft, swollen entrance between thumb and finger. The give is not the same as it would have been from grease alone. Ah—a whore worthy of the name.
Daemon allows her to grab him by the wrist and lead him through the room, through a darkened corridor and into an empty chamber. ‘Tis one of several, he observes, and quite finely furnished for an establishment of ill-repute. Of course, they are visiting the Street of Silk this time; the standards are far higher than that dilapidated hovel in Flea Bottom.
He pushes the girl away when she makes for the buttons of his jacket.
“I’m not intending to linger, pet,” he says, leading her hand down to the laces of his breeches. She nods, smirking impishly as she works at the fastenings. When they come loose, he presses her back onto the bed, reaching into his pants to withdraw his cock.
“My Prince!” She is already spreading her legs like a little slut, fingers plucking hedonistically at her nipples. He leers at her, fondling the soft warmth of her exposed cunt. She is primed and ready for him, a consummate professional in her art.
He wishes the sight stirred him more.
“Call me ‘Uncle’.” He damns his weakness even as he crawls on top of her and shoves her legs further apart, notching his cock at her entrance.
He’d not had this fucking obsession before you—back when he’d thought himself enamoured with your sister, it had been enough to simply eke out his lusts on the nearest hole available, quick and rough and barely memorable. How you have unmanned him! How pathetic he has become. How woeful it is that he cannot endure something so instinctive, so primordial as mating without the thought of you to help him along.
The girl blinks; smiles. “Uncle! Oh, Uncle,” she breathes, the inflection all wrong, sounding nothing like you.
He plunges harshly into her, the glide hot and wet and too easy. It is nothing like taking your maidenhead would feel like, nothing like the tight resistance of a nervous virgin. He closes his eyes and pounds into the whore below him. This time, it is different; he is in control, he knows he is picturing you and he lets himself, permits the mirage of you to fill his mind’s eye and imagines the way your eyes might widen with mingling trust and hesitation as he breaches you.
“Uncle, my Prince, fuck—”
He slaps a hand over her mouth, irritated by the disruption of his fantasy. You would never say such a thing in the midst of your deflowering, he is sure of it. When the whore’s voice is stifled, pitchy whimpers emanating from under his palm, he can almost convince himself it is you, can almost lose himself in the slip of cunt and glide of skin.
Daemon moans your name again—the game is up and it’s not long before he’s either exiled or given you, so what is the point in pretence—and suckles dark bruises down her throat, imagining it is the pale skin of your beguiling flesh. When he opens his eyes to stare into yours, he is confronted with the dull green of the whore’s below him.
What am I doing? What am I doing? Usually, the shame and aggravation sinks in once the firestorm of ecstasy has burnt itself out. It is just his luck that it strikes mid-coupling now.
“Fuck.” He begins to soften in spite of his hips driving a determined rhythm, desperate to keep the illusion alive just a little longer. It is not to be. “Fuck.”
He pulls out of the whore, sitting back on his haunches. He cannot go through with it. He cannot slink away, bury himself in a whore and pretend as though it’s you, not when he could be trying to win the real thing. He cannot disgrace you by fucking another and wishing it was your face he sees. It would have been preferable had the revelation come sooner—or later. He does not enjoy exposing his weakness before peasant stock.
He sighs—wipes his hand over his eyes—tucks himself back into his breeches, knotting the laces once more.
“My Prince?” she asks, legs splayed and cunt raw and red from his vigorous pace.
He smiles wryly down at her, thumbing three silvers into her hand.
“My apologies, pet,” he says, pulling himself off the bed and heading to the door. “I’ve got somewhere to be.”
Tumblr media
When Viserys had summoned him after his night in the brothel so long ago, he’d known immediately what it was about.
Foolish of him, really, to have said what he did. The heir for a day. To be fair, he’d not meant it as mockery of Viserys’s pain or Aemma’s suffering, of Rhaenyra’s grief or your confusion. For all the commons had jibed of his anger and resentment, the Rogue Prince forced down the line of succession by a mere newborn, he had never truly felt umbrage toward his own nephew. How could he? He remembers cradling that boy in his arms, still numb with the shock of his cousin’s death, his brother nowhere to be seen; he remembers those gasping wheezes of his, tiny lips tinged purple with the effort of drawing air into lungs that did not wish to rise. Baelon had passed on in only a few hours, taking with him the Realm’s hope for another heir. Someone other than him.
The King’s vitriol was understandable, if unjustified; in a rare display of restraint, Daemon had allowed the man to rail at him over the perceived slight, all too aware of who had been whispering in his ear. It was clear that Otto Hightower had gleaned the details from one of those nearby on the night of his unfortunate blunder, and had used the information to strip him of his standing.
He should have known better than to trust those he used to surround himself with. He should have learned by now.
Daemon returns to the Keep as the hour of the ghosts sets in, the dim illumination of the torches bracketing the walls casting an eerie reminiscence upon his path. He’s faced Viserys’s wrath one too many times, those occasions blurring together so that he is several iterations of himself simultaneously.
Daemon the soldier. Daemon the drunkard. Daemon the outcast. He walks in the shadow of his former selves.
It is not long before he is confronted by the silent, scowling form of the Lord Commander. He holds his arms up, palms out, a clear signal of surrender.
“I assume my brother wishes to see me?” he asks, only to be provided a brief nod in return.
A man of few words, he notes to himself. ‘Tis welcome to see that some things don’t change.
He is honestly surprised that he isn’t dragged into the Great Hall again—it is already a significant departure from the previous two events that had gotten him exiled. There is less substantiation and more happenstance in these circumstances, he supposes. Well, with the exception of his assault on Tyrell; there is no denying that occurred. But not even Viserys would take a flowery fuck like him at his word, and he is sure to have untruths aplenty to impart.
Instead, he is escorted into the Small Council chamber, where Viserys sits alone at the head of the table, staring pensively at the wood grain. He barely acknowledges Ser Harrold’s pronouncement. Abruptly, he sits up, takes in the view of his brother and his Lord Commander, and clenches his teeth.
“You may leave us, Ser Harrold,” he says, eyes fixed upon Daemon.
He steels himself. This time, he has nothing to be ashamed of—except for his conduct with Tyrell, and maybe the whore, perhaps both… At least this time he isn’t being accused of lechery.
“I had thought you tempered by the years away.” The King’s grip is white-knuckled upon the arm of his seat. “And yet I learn today a most curious thing: the assault of a noble Lord of the Seven Kingdoms, and accusations leveraged by that very same Lord against my beloved daughter’s reputation. He claims her to be entangled in an affair with another. Who could have done such a thing, I asked? Who other than Lord Flea Bottom himself—my very own brother?”
Never mind, then. By the end of his oration, his words sound more like the sibilant hiss of a snake than the utterances of a man.
“Brother—”
“You will be silent, wretch!” Viserys snaps, smacking his palm down on the table. His pockmarked face has flushed ugly red, apoplectic with thinly veiled fury. “How could you do this? Ruining Rhaenyra wasn’t enough for you, is that it? You had to go and spoil my second child, my beloved girl, for your own selfish amusement?”
“I have done nothing, Viserys!”
“I am your King!” He pushes himself from his chair by his hand and stalks over to stand before Daemon. He is limping again as he is wont to do these days. “You will address me as ‘Your Grace’!”
“Your Grace.” Daemon bows his head slightly in deference. He cannot afford to anger the man further. “While I’ll confess to the abuse levied upon Lord Tyrell, I cannot admit to something I didn’t do. I haven’t touched her—”
“Oh, you haven’t?” Viserys laughs, but it is a repugnant, mocking sound. His features are firmly arranged into an expression of revulsion. “So Ser Criston’s reports of your—indecent behaviour are falsities, is that correct?”
“Cole?” Daemon asks incredulously. “The man hates me, Viserys. Why the fuck are you listening to him?”
His brother makes a noise of outrage. “Very well. A cruel gleam lingers in his eyes. “And what is this I hear of you—you—cavorting about with whores, encouraging them to playact as my daughter so that you may seek your pleasure?”
Daemon’s stomach sinks. Oh, fuck.
Viserys continues. “Your man from the City Watch—Dargood—had little issue telling the tale. What say you to that?” A great many things, brother; and none of them for your ears. The King sneers. “I have half a mind to cut your cock from you and remedy your wickedness once and for all!”
“What would you have me do? Lie? I’ll admit to fucking whores and pretending they were her. Tell me you’ve never let your desires rule your bedsport!” Daemon lets out a derisive scoff. “But I’ll not stand here and be accused of undue conduct when I’ve been nothing short of chivalrous in your daughter’s company.”
“You have an answer for everything, don’t you? Lech!” Viserys leans back against the table. When next he speaks, his voice is heavy with distaste. “Begone from this city, Daemon. You have outstayed your welcome once again.”
He shakes his head. “No.”
“No?”
Incredulity. Daemon supposes it is fair; he’d never resisted exile before.
“No,” he repeats firmly. “Save for the business with Tyrell, I’ve done nothing wrong. You have no grounds to banish me.”
“No grounds? No grounds?” The King’s pitch is rising. “Attention! Flattery! Gifts! It is a game I know well! A game you’ve played with my first child, and now my second!”
“I am not after ruining her reputation, Your Grace,” Daemon insists. His brother huffs and spins away, pacing before him. “I would have her as my wife.”
Viserys pauses.
“Are you in jest?” He looks almost as though he is torn between laughter and tears. “How do you think you’ll go about getting my throne from her? Do you plan on slaying Rhaenyra and her sons to get your crown?”
It is an abhorrent thought. Daemon cannot believe his brother would think so lowly of him. Briefly, he mourns the bond he once had with him, a bond that has frayed and corrupted under the weight of the Seven Kingdoms.
“It’s not about the Iron Throne, Viserys!” He alters his approach, beseeching his brother and urgently pressing his case. “I am the best match for her, and you know it. A Targaryen prince, a warrior, a dragonrider. There is none other who would compare, none other who could give her a just union such as I, least of all that idiot Tyrell—”
“What of Lord Jason Lannister? I would have her wed into Casterly Rock, far away from your grasping ambition!” Viserys’s gaze is considering, now. No longer is he beholden to the blind rage that had gripped him only moments before. “As for your lofty claim… it is Alicent’s wish that I announce the girl’s betrothal to Aegon, who is also a Targaryen prince and a dragonrider. Why should I not heed her instead?”
He's tempted to laugh, but doing so would only incite further ire. No matter the cost, Daemon will not concede to a green boy who seems more satisfied in acting like a child than behaving like a man.
“The boy is awful to her, Your Grace. She dislikes him. And the Lannister cunt? A simpleton. She’d be wasted on a fool like him, and you know it.”
His brother tips his head in acknowledgement and exhales frustratedly, leaning against the Small Council table. Much of the fight has left him.
“You are right… But how can I allow this?” Viserys whispers. He is bowed over the table, slumped and defeated. “How could you do this to her? To me?”
“What have I done?” Daemon draws closer. “I’ve spoken with her, taken walks with her, given her gifts. It is nothing more than that. I doubt she ever saw it as more than an uncle taking interest in his niece, until today. I swear this to you upon anything you wish to name.”
The King chuckles, though it carries no joy. “Such sincerity, Daemon. It is most unlike you.”
“I want her as my wife,” he says again, pleading. “Not for the sake of the throne, or to harm you, or any other reason save this—I want her.”
“I cannot…” is the response, muted and distressed. Viserys glances up at him. “You would destroy her.”
He is upset, resigned, but no longer alight with infuriation. Daemon leans against the table next to his brother.
“I would make her happy. Happier than any other. She could stay in the capital with her family. She could ride that great beast of hers whenever she likes. She could study to her heart’s content, at home where she belongs. Only I can give her all those things, and you know it. I am what she needs.”
Viserys does not reply—only stares at him, something foreign and inscrutable in his visage.
He makes his final bid. “Long have I been your staunchest supporter. Did I not wage a war in the Stepstones in defense of your kingdom? I have never asked for anything in return, except this: long ago, you promised that you’d annul my marriage so that I might find a bride of my own choosing. Years, I asked. Years, you denied me. And now… I am free.”
Daemon’s voice rings out in the stillness, the echo lending gravity to his words. He stares unflinchingly at his brother. “Give the girl to me to wife. You owe me this.”
The King is silent, unmoving. It is clear he has nothing left to say. And thus, Daemon has no reason to remain.
He bows and knocks on the door to be let out of the room. Passing through the walkway of the Small Council chambers as it opens, he leaves the King to his deliberations and hopes that his efforts will pay off.
Tumblr media
“For all your degeneracy,” Daemon sneers, “you’re not one to be so loose with secrets.”
The air is chilled with the deep dark of night, the blackness so thick it is almost choking. He doesn’t enjoy the necessity of returning to the scene of his transgressions, but his wayward friend is easy to discover in the depths of the city.
Below him, Dargood pants and splutters, winded after being struck in the gut and dragged from his stool in a cheap, nameless drinking house; Daemon had lugged him rather briskly by the neck to the narrow alleyway beside the tavern, the amber luminosity pooling from the rickety window providing just enough light for him to make out the man’s face.
Dargood coughs. “Times change. A man’s got to do what he must to make coin in this city.”
“City Watch not paying you enough?” Daemon observes him as his eyes begin to droop shut, no doubt a combination of the drink and the knock to the skull as he’d been pulled out the door. He kicks him in the side for good measure, relishing in the yelp emitted when the leather makes contact with vulnerable flesh. “What a shame. Whoever could blame you for selling slanders to the King, then?”
His former ally scrambles to his knees, swaying unsteadily against the stone. “It’s not like that. And ‘slander’ only counts when it’s not true.”
He has a point, Daemon’s mind cannot help but acknowledge.
Dargood babbles on, heedless of the aggravation rising in the figure above him. “I didn’t mention anything outside what I heard and saw—”
“Oh, fuck off!” Daemon clouts him across the temple once more. He collides with the wall with a subdued thump, punctuated by further groaning. “Your father’s a lord. You don’t need the money.”
“Because it’d be so easy for me to beg that man for compassion.” Dargood spits the words out as though they taste foul on his tongue.
Ah, yes—he’d quite forgotten. A lesser son from a lesser House would hardly have recourse to cast himself upon the fires of mercy after amassing a reputation as dissolute as the man’s before him. Whoring, gambling, brawling, and there’d even been some more unsavoury rumours about his involvement in some scheme exploiting the poorest orphans of the city; he’d not cared to ask then, but perhaps he should have. He does not recognise the being before him.
Scum, he realises. He’s scum.
Daemon steps back, assessing the beaten creature that he had once called friend. He sighs. “Go home, Dargood,” he says finally. “Leave this city, or you’ll be made to.”
Before he can turn and walk away, the man lurches to his feet, grappling along the rock behind him to support his unsteady mass. His bloodshot eyes zero in on his target.
“So that’s it, then?” he asks, irate cadence marred by the slur in his speech. “You’ll just throw me aside when you feel like it? After all these years, Prince.”
A brief flicker of displeasure stirs Daemon’s temper. “Yes—your Prince. You sold out your Prince for some fucking coin.”
Come to think of it… Wasn’t he making his little remarks before word reached my brother?
The memory has his hands locked tight around the man’s throat before his mind can become fully cognisant of his actions. “In fact”—his fingers squeeze harder—“you sold out your Prince for status. Didn’t even need the money to spread your tales, did you?”
“Let—let go!” Dargood chokes, making no attempt to release himself from Daemon’s hold. He ought to be capable of such a feat; his training was thorough enough.
Pathetic. He’s not worth the bother.
Daemon loosens his grasp, surveying the vermin that had been his proudest investiture, a shining example of what the City Watch could achieve with discipline and decisiveness as its fundamental tenets. Now, he is no more than rabble, one among thousands of crooks, delinquents and filth polluting his ancestor’s crowning glory.
“Hm. You disappoint me.” With a final glower of disdain, he adds, “Expect a visit from your Lord Commander when day breaks. I think you’ll find your tenure with the Watch is at an end.”
With that, Daemon revolves on his heel and stalks away, far from Flea Bottom, from these havens of vice lining the streets, and from the poison that had fuelled his life in past years. He has no need for such a meaningless existence now. There is something better and brighter to look forward to.
“My Prince! Daemon!”
He ignores Dargood’s supplications even as they grow louder, leaving him behind—where he belongs.
CDrama Year in Review 2023
I'm still very much a CDrama beginner--I just started watching them in the summer of 2022--but since this is the first year I got into them in earnest, I figured I might as well do a year in review a la @dangermousie (whose lists I have found incredibly helpful in deciding which CDramas I really, really need to go back and watch as part of my CDrama education--so thank you!). So, without further adieu, here is my ranking of 2023 CDramas, in order of least enjoyed to most enjoyed*.
(See also: KDrama Year in Review 2023)
*Disclaimer: *not* a measure of objective quality
10. Royal Rumours: This drama was not great? Meng Zi Yi and Jeremy Tsui were fun, but the story started out messy and got messier. For some reason I still finished it, I think because I had a lingering cold and it was all my brain could handle at the time *shrug*
9. Gone with the Rain: I actually really enjoyed this one! The pacing was inconsistent, but Zhang Nan was fun as the irreverent Mo Xi, and we love a grizzled general. Special shout to the teacher who was not actually evil, just a sad lesbian whose gf disappeared on her
8. Love You Seven Times: Intriguing concept, not a strong enough FL to carry it through. The reincarnation stuff really worked for me at first, especially in their first mortal tribulation (as people, not CGI animals), but I got tired of it pretty quickly. I admit, the gifs of Ding Yu Xi as a sexy cat demon *did* pull me back in, but not enough for me to actually finish the thing, alas
7. Destined/Chang Feng Du: Started out really strong, and then stalled out on me. I think I only got up to about episode 22 or so, after their epic desert crossing and new start in a new state--they lost all narrative momentum for me there. I stopped watching and then just...didn't start again. I do, however, remain a big Bai Jing Ting fan, and will be keeping on eye out for whatever he does next
6. Hidden Love: (Contemporary) Age gap romances are hit or miss for me, but Zhao Lu Si absolutely stole/carried the show for me in this one. Although more fun imo when the main couple are in the the will-they-won't-they phase than in the family melodrama after they get together, still the only contemporary CDrama to get me to give it a go this year--and I'm glad I did
5. My Journey to You: Featuring my favorite murder girlies Esther Yu as Yun Wei Shan and Lu Yu Xiao as Shanguan Qian! Gorgeous costumes and sets, sweeping cinematography, and plot that kept me on the edge of my seat. Full disclosure, I have not actually watched the last two episodes because I got busy and then saw weird chatter about them, so I have no comment on the allegedly weird ending
4. Till the End of the Moon: Look, I know the ending wasn't ideal, but for the majority of its run, this drama owned my entire soul. It also introduced me to Bai Lu as Li Su Su, who inspired my first actual tumblr post (that wasn't a reblog) because I was so obsessed with her. And everyone knows that Tantai Jin is the CDrama ML of the year. 10/10, no regrets at letting it take over my life (and the OST my Spotify) from April to May of this year
3. The Story of Kunning Palace: More Bai Lu is always a good thing, and she's extra fun here as the transmigrated former evil empress and totally-over-your-nonsense Xiang Xue Ning here. The reverse haremness of it all totally shows why Bai Lu is the chemistry queen, especially with the princess (Liu Xie Ning) and cranky, morally grey, would-fail-gym-class strategist Xie Wie (Zhang Ling He). So glad this drama made it out of the CDrama vault and didn't languish indefinitely in censorship hell
2. A Journey to Love: Finished this one two days ago as of this writing and am still not normal about it. Ren Ruyi (Liu Shi Shi) and Ning Yuan Zhou (Liu Yu Ning) lead an exceptionally strong ensemble cast in this wuxia that explores the complicated relationships between love, duty, loyalty, loneliness, and companionship. Ruyi and Yuan Zhou are far and away one of my fave OTPs of the year, but just as compelling are the relationships between friends/brothers/fellow assassins Yu Shisan, Yuan Lu (ugh my heart), Qian Zhou, and Sun Lang. This drama definitely has one of the strongest ensemble casts of the year. And the character growth of Yang Ying from little princess abandoned in the cold palace to who she becomes by the end will stick with me for a long time. Plus another 10/10 OST!
1. Lost You Forever S1: I'm not normally a reverse harem girl, but the longing, loss, and hard resolve portrayed to perfection by Yang Zi as Xiao Yao really did it for me here. This whole drama struck an emotional chord for me, and where TTEOTM consumed my soul, LYF took over my heart. Xiao Yao's relationships with her power hungry, overprotective cousin Cang Xuan; hot snake demon Xiang Liu/playboy archery shufu Feng Feng Bei; and perfectly devoted Tushan Jing are all equally compelling to me, and while I may know who she ends up with in the end, who I *think* she should be with changes based on who's on screen at any given time. And A'Nian, my favorite bratty princess who really just needs some strong parenting, holds a special place in my heart. I know we may never get S2, and even if we do, censorship means it probably won't be what the drama makers are capable of, but I'm so glad for this little piece of absolute perfection. And, again, a top notch OST!
Fave Drama: Lost You Forever, by just a hair over A Journey to Love. See above.
Least Fave Drama: Royal Rumours--truly why did I finish this, what was past me thinking
Biggest Disappointment: 2023 is also the year I read Dreamer in the Spring Boudoir, my very first CNovel! But then I didn't even bother checking out its adaptation, Romance of a Twin Flower, because it got rid of everything that made the novel such an addicting read, including a brilliant, strategic, ice cold FL and an ML who actually kind of sucked at the beginning, only to grow on you very, very slowly over time. I'm grateful that the chatter around the drama is what brought the novel to my attention, but other than that, hard pass.
Favorite Male Character: Lots of good ones this year, but I'm gonna go with Cang Xuan (Zhang Wan Yi) from Lost You Forever. The conflict he faces between getting enough power to protect the people he loves the most and that power making him incompatible with those loved ones is so compelling, and his yearning for Xiao Yao even when she's right in front of him is wrenching. Full disclosure, I also just really love the sound of his voice
Tumblr media
Favorite Female Character: This could easily have gone to Li Susu (TTEOTM), Xiao Yao (LYF), or Ren Ruyi (AJTL), but I'm gonna go with Bai Lu's Xiang Xue Ning in The Story of Kunning Palace. Something I really loved about this character was just how jaded Xue Ning really was, even in her second go round at life. Yeah, she wants to make amends for the harm done in her previous rise to power, but that has hardly turned her into a good--or even pleasant--person. Instead, she's incredibly skeptical and still plays most things ice cold, especially with her family. As a bonus, we got plenty of Bai Lu's fantastic side eye as she basically had to do high school all over again when she gets called into the palace despite her very best efforts not to be.
Tumblr media
Favorite Ship: Ren Ruyi and Yuan Zhao from A Journey to Love have got to be it. They balance each other out so well, and over the course of the drama, learn to communicate effectively with each other whenever they have a problem. They also recognize that not all problems can be solved by ~love~, which makes their relationship even more compelling when they decide to prioritize each other in a way that respects what the other wants from life.
Tumblr media
Favorite Secondary Ship: Little princess Yang Ying and Yuan Lu absolutely broke stole my heart in A Journey to Love. Doomed love even more than the main OTP, these two's youthful romance was such much fun to watch, especially as they egged their respective mentors on in their own romance. Yang Ying's recognition that her first love did not have to be her only love is also something I always love to see, even as it broke my heart that (spoiler) she and Yuan Lu never really had a chance at an HEA. Their relationship really exemplified a key theme of this drama: that you should love the people you love while they're still with you because tomorrow is never promised.
Tumblr media
Non-2023 Dramas that I Watched: Two non-2023 dramas I watched that deserve a special shout out are Love and Redemption and The Sword and the Brocade. Love and Redemption prepared me to really appreciate the big swings that Till the End of the Moon took, and The Sword and the Brocade went a little way to filling the Story of Ming Lan shaped hole in my heart. The Sword and the Brocade also had absolutely searing critique of the concubine system, even as it featured one of the most genuinely good-hearted FLs I've seen. Would recommend both!
Most Looking Forward To: Yes, I'm a sucker and the censors (not to mention the characters) will probably break my heart, but I'm still crossing my fingers that Lost You Forever S2 will live up to the promise of part one. See above: still a CDrama beginner, have not yet had all the optimism knocked out of me. Sue me.
A/N: This is inspired by the One Direction song because duh. Just a lil bit of fluff to get you through the next few days before Season 4 is out!!!
Masterlist
Tumblr media
It’s Saturday night and your phone has been eerily silent. You thought that JJ would be bugging you nonstop about the party, but he hasn’t sent any messages today. For once, it seems like he’s actually respecting your boundaries (though a part of you secretly loves that he barged his way into your life and continues to shake things up on a daily basis). You check it again (still nothing) and turn back to your chemistry textbook with a sigh.
It’s 9:04 when a knocking sound coming from your window breaks you out of your concentration. Adrenaline spikes your heart rate, and you grab your Hydroflask from your bedside table before going to check it out. It’s mostly full, so it should be enough to knock out a kidnapper or a burglar should the need arise.
But when you pull up the shades, it’s just a blond chaos demon wearing a mischievous smirk that makes your knees buckle. As you unlock the window and push it up, you flash him an eye roll, which only makes his smirk grow. You step back to give him room to clamber in, and he slides through with a practiced ease.
“Hey, princess, sorry I’m late. I parked at the country club and walked over so no one would see,” he says, leaning back against the window. His eyes flicker down your body, taking in your PJ shorts and oversized Kildare Marina t-shirt. “Why aren’t you dressed?”
“I told you, I’m not going,” you answer, crossing your arms across your chest.
“And I told you that you are.” He takes a big step forward, closing the distance between you. He grabs your wrists and pulls your arms down, swinging them. “C’mon, it’ll be fu-un.” There’s a playful glint in his eyes as he sings the last word, dragging out the ‘u.’
“I’m not stupid, JJ, I know that this party is a glorified orgy. And Rafe Cameron has been bragging about all the drugs he’s bringing for weeks now.”
“Well it just so happens that the party's at John B’s, where I conveniently have my own room. No orgy participation necessary. Unless, of course, you decide you want to join in after all.” You huff out a sigh, rolling your eyes again.
“You wish, Maybank.”
“If you’re really that afraid, I won’t force you to come. I just thought we could have this one night to be normal. Get drunk, pretend we’re in love, ignore that this has been doomed from the start.” His shoulders lift in a slight shrug as if he doesn’t care, but he looks down at you through his eyelashes and you see a hint of wistfulness underneath his carefree expression. You bite down on your lower lip as you make a quick mental pros and cons list. JJ can see the gears turning in your brain and pulls you into his chest, dropping your hands to wrap his arms around your waist instead.
“Don’t overthink it, just let go for one night. I promise you won’t regret it.” He punctuates his sentence with a kiss, letting his tongue sweep across your bottom lip for just a moment before pulling back. The past month flashes through your mind; a highlight reel of stealing kisses behind the boat house when he’s supposed to be mowing the lawn, sneaking out to meet him at the bluffs in the middle of the night, and hooking up in the back of the Twinkie.
It’s hard to see a future with this boy from the wrong side of the island, but there’s a part of you that longs for it. To be sucked fully into his wild vortex of a life. You let out a defeated sigh. If you don’t seize this moment, you may never get the chance to see if JJ can be more than just a summer fling.
“Fine, just give me ten minutes and I’ll meet you at the club,” you say. His face breaks into a grin and he leans in to press a quick peck to your cheek and then he’s gone in a flash.
“I’m gonna go before you change your mind. See you in ten minutes!” He calls over his shoulder as he climbs back out into the flat part of the roof over the garage.
You shake your head and chuckle to yourself as you throw some clothes into your backpack. On your way out of your room, you grab your laptop and a textbook to strengthen your alibi.
“I’m going to sleep over at Sarah’s, we’ve got a big chem test next week that we need to study for,” you tell your parents as you pass the living room. You don’t stick around to hear their response and let yourself out the front door.
The country club is a short walk away, and the Twinkie is the only car in the lot. JJ is leaning against it, scrolling absentmindedly through his phone while he waits. As you get closer, your footsteps get louder, and he looks up at you with a smile.
“Hang on, I just gotta change quick,” you say as you keep walking, past him and around the car until you’re mostly hidden from his view. “Don’t look.”
“It’s nothing I haven’t seen before,” he snorts.
“We’re pretending to be in love tonight, right? That means you’re a respectful boyfriend.” You slip off your comfy clothes and into your party attire as fast as you can, wanting to get out of Figure 8 as soon as possible.
“I never said anything about being respectful.”
Even though he can’t see your face, you roll your eyes as you get into the car.
“A girl can dream,” you let out a fake-dramatic sigh and cross your arms as he slides in next to you.
“Look at us, fighting like a couple already.”
“If we were a real couple, how would you make up with me?” You ask, looking over at him with a sly smirk.
“I’d say, c’mon, babe, don’t be like that,” he raises his voice an octave, making it sound whiny. Hearing him call you ‘babe,’ even jokingly, sends blood rushing to your core. “Then, I’d grab your hand like this,” he pulls on your left hand, carefully releasing it from where it is still crossed in front of your chest, then laces his fingers with yours. His thumb rubs slow circles against the sensitive skin on the back of your hand and your breath hitches in your throat.
“Wow, Maybank, I’m impressed,” you say, forcing through your breathlessness to continue with the joke. “Maybe there’s secretly a rom-com heartthrob hiding beneath that whole fuckboy thing you’ve got going on.” You use your joined hands to gesture vaguely over at him, and he chuckles.
“Nah, I’ve just seen enough movies to be able to fake it.” Your laugh is loud and wild, and with your head thrown back you don’t notice the way JJ’s eyes sparkle as he looks over at you.
JJ pulls up in front of John B’s house, where the yard is already packed with people. Kiara and Pope are sitting in lawn chairs on the driveway next to a giant storage bin. When you reach over to open the passenger door, JJ grabs your arm and mutters “Wait.” You let your hand drop into your lap and watch as he jogs around the front of the car. In the distance behind him, his two friends share a confused look. He opens your door and holds a hand out to you, dropping his head in a mock-bow that probably looks real to everyone else who can’t see the goofy grin on his face. With another eye roll, you take his hand and let him help you out of the car. While you walk across the driveway, he keeps a firm hold on your hand and gently swings your arm with his own, which makes you laugh again.
When you stop in front of Kie and Pope, their eyebrows furrow in tandem.
“Y/N?” Kie asks, shaking her head slightly as she looks back and forth between you and JJ. The two of you had been friends as kids, before she started pulling away from everything and everyone on Figure 8.
“Dude, when you said you were bringing the girl you were hooking up with we thought she’d be a touron,” Pope says, looking over at you with an amused smile.
A few heads turn at the sight of you and JJ holding hands as you battle your way through the crowd to the keg, but no one says anything. They’d be hypocrites if they did, since most of them are dancing with people they’d never be caught dead with on a normal day.
John B’s up by the keg with your best friend Sarah, which is really the only normal thing about this party. She flashes you a knowing smile as John B claps a hand on JJ’s shoulder, whispering something that makes JJ smirk, before handing you each a plastic solo cup. You hold it up for JJ to ‘cheers’ before you take your first sip. The cheap beer leaves a bitter taste in the back of your throat which makes you wrinkle your nose. He takes a long swig from his own cup and then leans in so his mouth is next to your ear.
“If we were really dating, I’d tell you that we have other drinks inside,” he yells over the loud music.
“If we were really dating, I’d make you get me a vodka lemonade,” you shout back, batting your eyelashes at him as
He leads you into the house, which he has to unlock and then relock behind you so no one sneaks in to use the beds (or the couch, or the floor…) for their fatherless behavior.
While he digs around under the sink for the bottle, you hoist yourself up onto the counter next to him, letting your legs swing as you wait. When he’s finished making your drink, he steps up to the counter, nudging your legs to the side so he can wedge his hips between them. You reach for the glass but he pulls it out of your reach.
“If you were really my girlfriend, I’d make you trade me a kiss for your drink,” he teases, raising his eyebrows as if to challenge you.
“If you were really my boyfriend, I’d kiss you like this,” you whisper as you grab a fistful of his t-shirt and pull him in. You slide your lips against his in slow, languid strokes, letting your tongue flick against his bottom lip every few seconds but pulling it back before he can suck it fully into his mouth like you know he wants to.
“If you were really my girlfriend, I’d take you back to my room and fuck you so hard that everyone at the party would know about us,” he mutters against your lips. As much as you like that idea, you actually do want to dance.
“Well, if you were really my boyfriend, I’d make you go back outside and dance with me first.” With both hands, you push against his chest to get him to take a step back and slide off the counter into the now-open space. After giving him a quick peck, you pluck the glass from his hand and strut back outside. You don’t need to turn around to know that he’s following, eager to have his hands all over you again.
By the time you shove your way to the middle of the makeshift dance floor, your drink is half-empty and you feel the alcohol going straight to your head, blurring the edges of your thoughts and making your brain feel lighter. Finally, you turn around to face JJ and flash him a cheeky, vodka-soaked smile as you start to sway your hips to the beat of the music. He’s still for a moment, watching you through eyes heavy with lust, and then he’s there, right in front of you with his free hand gripping your hip.
Bravery surges through your veins, aided by the alcohol and the relative safety of a phoneless party, and you slip one of your legs between JJ’s. You can feel him hardening against your thigh and lean into it, pressing your hips forward until they’re flush with his. He leans in to press hot, open-mouthed kisses against your neck, eliciting a soft moan from your lips.
Despite your closeness, the two of you are surprisingly PG compared to the crowd around you. Out of the corner of your eye, you see Topper Thornton with one hand on Shelby Moore’s tits while the other is lost underneath her dress, two guys taking turns making out with the same girl, and at least three topless girls. So you don’t feel bad about tangling your hands in his blond hair, pulling his head up until it’s level with yours, and crashing your lips against his.
As the alcohol continues to flow, your game of make-believe descends into madness. When the party starts looking more like an orgy, the two of you decide to take a walk along the beach to try and sober up a little bit. The cool, salt-infused air is a refreshing change from the sweaty mess of bodies you had spent most of the night in, and you close your eyes and take a deep breath, letting it cleanse your sins.
“If I was your boyfriend I’d tackle you into the water right now,” JJ says from just behind you. He’s got one arm around your waist and his chin is resting on your shoulder. You open one eye and turn your head to the side to frown at him.
“If I was your girlfriend, I’d kick you in the balls,” you shoot back.
“Well then I’d kick you in the… boobs.” It takes him a second to figure out where to kick you for the same effect, and you burst out laughing when he finally finishes his sentence. “Hey! It’s not funny. Girls don’t really have anything equivalent to balls.”
“Equivalent? That’s a big word. JJ Maybank, have you been studying?”
“Fuck off,” he mumbles, burying his face in your neck. It feels hot against your skin and you twist in his arms so you’re facing him.
“Oh my God, you have been! It’s a Christmas miracle!” You exclaim, amusement lifting your voice up an octave.
“It’s not a big deal, Pope’s just been helping me with some stuff.”
“Not for most people, but for the guy who said he’d rather die than open a textbook, it seems like a pretty big deal.”
“Well, I’d rather not spend the rest of my life in high school, so I thought I should at least try to get my shit together.” He shrugs, trying to look nonchalant, but you know he’s still a little embarrassed because he won’t make eye contact with you.
You reach up to brush his hair off his forehead, locking your gaze with his.
“If I was your girlfriend, I’d be proud of you,” you whisper. The words hang suspended in the space between you and suddenly it doesn’t feel like a game anymore. JJ’s eyes flicker down to your lips and back up to your eyes. They’re filled with a softness you’ve never seen before and when he leans in to kiss you, it’s slow and sweet.
It’s not much, just a soft brushing of lips, but it feels like a possibility. You lean into it, into him, taking a leap of faith. After all, you gotta live while you’re young, right?
i need more gay percy jackson fics. i need male best friends to lovers with Percy Jackson. i need slow burn. pining. tension. THE WHOLE 9 YARDS. I’m literally gonna do it now
. Male bff and Percy meet at camp in the first book. Boom. Instantly best friends
. Fuck the rule of “only 3 demigods per quest” Grover and Annabeth can come too, but Bff goes on every quest with Percy because they are chaotic yet brilliant when they work together
. Around Titan’s Curse, Percy and bff start developing feelings
. Percy just wants to be with bff all day long and not deal with all the godly stuff
. Bff worries more then usual about percy
. The fourth book is where things really start to escalate
. When Percy goes missing on Calypso’s island, bff goes feral
. Nobody is able to stop him from searching for Percy
. He searches new territory every couple days to make sure he isn’t missing anything
. Bff is heart broken when they declare Percy is dead
. He isolates is his cabin and only comes out for the funeral
. It’s only when he and Percy meet eyes he stops sad crying and starts happy crying
. Annabeth hugs Percy but his eyes are on bff
. After Percy leaves the big house, he instantly goes looking for bff
. He finds him sitting by the lake, a spot they usually hang out at together
. Ik it’s cliche but it’s like time stops and it’s just the two of them
. Bff tackles Percy in a hug and focuses on trying not to cry
. They missed each other :(
. But the happiness doesn’t last long because Percy has to leave for the labyrinth and bff can’t come with him
. They see each other again when Percy comes back from the labyrinth right before the battle but they didn’t get a chance to talk and it was torture for the both of them
. Tension was high when bff and Percy met again after the battle
. Bff thinks Percy and annabeth are a thing, and Percy is just awkward
. They kind of avoid each other for the rest of the summer at camp, and it hurts the both of them
. Bff does go to the birthday party, and it’s like all tension is lost
. Don’t ask me to elaborate on that, they’re boys, I don’t get it either
. They hug and I feel like that’s when their feelings are actually established
. Percy’s like “damn I really missed you all this time, not just in a best friend way tho”
. And bff is like “pls never leave again I missed you too much. Maybe more than a best friend should”
. I think about a year passed between Battle of the Labyrinth and Last Olympian
. And in that time, bff and Percy visit each other as much as possible
. By now, bff and Percy are both 100% certain of their feelings, they just need to tell each other
. Tension continues to grow, especially when Percy tells bff of his and Rachel’s friendship
. Right before Beckendorf comes to get Percy, Bff leaves for camp half blood and he stays there until he has to go to Manhattan for the battle
. Before the battle of manhattan begins, bff and Percy seek each other out, just to see each other again before everything changes
. During the battle, Percy makes sure bff is near him at all times
. Bff has gone all these years without any serious/possible life threatening injuries, and Percy intends to keep it that way
. sike
. We’re gonna switch Annabeth for bff, so he takes the hit for Percy instead of Annabeth
. A wave a guilt hits percy when he sees bff nearly dead on the lounge chair
. In the moment when bff touches Percy’s Achilles’ spot
. They both feel the surge of electricity when bff makes contact with his skin
. The next day, right before the battle starts again, the boys takes one look at each other and are forced to accept that this could be the end
. Kronos’ army attacks and all hell breaks loose
. Percy and bff fight the drakon together
. While Percy goes to Olympus, bff was still fighting with the rest of the camp
. When Percy gets back to the street, bff is sitting wounded upon the Empire State Building
. Percy fixates on bff and and rushes to get him inside the lobby where he can hopefully find some healers
. But bff is too stubborn and insists he go with Percy to face Kronos
. Bff fights Kronos with Percy, Grover, and Annabeth
. During Luke’s final moments, bff and Percy are holding hands, a small gesture to make sure that they are actually here with each other
. The 2 of them stayed as close as they could to each other while they assessed the damage that the war brought
. When Zeus offered Percy godhood, Percy immediately thought of why he shouldn’t give up mortality
. and the boy standing outside helping wounded campers was the reason why
. They rode the elevator down from Olympus to the lobby, hands intertwined and shoulders brushing, but silent, because after that day, they both needed a second
. hahahahaha you thought
. Before they can express their feelings for each other, Nico tells them that Rachel went to camp
. So Percy, bff, Annabeth, and Nico go to Camp Half Blood via hippocampi
. They deal with the whole Rachel thing and start recovering from the battle
. Bff spends some time with his cabin while he lets Percy process everything
. But they reunite after dinner when bff gives him Percy his birthday gift
. It was a photo album
. “I thought it’d be nice to look through some happy memories, especially because of everything that happened today”
. Percy looks at bff like he is the whole world
. And to Percy, he is
. So he repays him in the only way Percy knows how
. He kisses his best friend
. He puts all 5 years of knowing this boy, his best friend, his light, into that kiss
. Making sure he knows that Percy loves him with all his heart
. Bff knows, because he whispers “I love you” without having to worry about his feelings not be reciprocated
idk how to end this
omg this turned out to be so long. I have no regrets though. Also, I’ve convinced myself to write an actual fan fiction of this. It’ll probably be on Wattpad, but it’s not gonna be done for a LONG time, and that’s if I even decide to go through with it. Props if you actually read this
back to december
Tumblr media
pairing: Christian Pulisic x Reader
In honor of “Speak Now (Taylor’s Version)” being released, this is based on “Back to December” by Taylor Swift 💜
You sat in the nearly empty café at a small table for two, hidden in the back corner of the room. You anxiously waited for the little bell above the door to ring, signifying that someone had entered. As you waited, your leg started bouncing up & down and your hands became clammy. You hadn’t seen Christian in nearly a year.
Around 10 minutes passed when the bell rang. Your legs immediately stood up, in hopes that it would be him, and a small smile crept onto your face as you saw his beautifully freckled face walking towards your table.
“Hey” Christian spoke as he approached you. You stood up to give him a quick hug, but you decided against it at the last minute.
“Hey. I’m so glad you were able to make some time to see me” You responded as you gestured for him to sit, him simply whispering a “yeah” as he sat down.
“How’s life? How’s your family? I haven’t seen them in a while”
“I’ve been good, busier than ever. They’re doing good too. Avery’s getting so big” He let out a slight laugh, and it made you happy to hear it for the first time in months.
You both small talk for a bit, talking about work & the weather, but you can sense that he’s a bit tense. His guard is most certainly up, and you know exactly why.
The last time he saw you was still replaying in the back of his mind: you leaving him. He had brought you some roses, and you left them there to die after that night.
“I’m just going to get it out of the way already. I’m so incredibly sorry for that night. I’ve tried to hard to move on after all these months but I just find myself missing you”
Christian didn’t speak. He watched you intently as you spoke, watching you let everything that you’d been holding in for all this time out.
“I haven’t been able to sleep, Chris. For 9 months I’ve spent each night thinking about the night I left. I’ve thought about how I didn’t call you on your birthday two months ago”
“Sometimes I think about the summer and all the times I watched you laughing in the passenger side” Chris spoke suddenly.
“And then I realized I loved you in the fall” You said quietly.
“But then the winter came and you were gone. I gave you all of my love and you decided it was time to leave” He mumbled as he let his head fall, staring down at the empty table in-front of him. You felt a pang of guilt in your chest at his words. It was your fault.
“I miss the way you held me in your arms that September night-”
“-the first time I ever saw you cry” Christian finished your sentence for you, memories from that night coming back to him.
Silence filled the air between you both, tension so thick you could cut it with a knife.
“Maybe this is wishful thinking, but if we loved again, I swear I’d love you right. But if you’re not ready to try again, I understand” You looked at him, hoping he would lift his gaze and look you in the eyes.
“I can’t, Y/n. I can’t put my heart on the line again for you, when you might just turn around and break it like you did before” He looked at you as he spoke, his eyes slightly glossed over. He looked as if he was fighting back tears.
“But-”
“But nothing. I accept your apology, but it’s time for both of us to move on. We were great while we lasted, but I just can’t go through that pain again. You didn’t call once to see how I was doing, to see if I was okay. I waited for your name to appear on my phone for weeks, only for it to never happen. You can’t break my heart, disappear for months and then come waltzing back in like nothing happened, like you didn’t happen” A tear trickled down Christian’s face as he spoke.
“I’m so sorry, Chris”
“I know you are, and I accept your apology. But this” He gestured between the pair of you “Won’t happen again” You simply nodded your head at his words, unable to find words to express how you felt.
It was silent once again until Christian decided it was time to go.
“Well, thanks for inviting me. I think it was good for both of us to get it off our chests” He went in for a hug and you nearly melted into it. You missed this feeling, and you would never have it again.
A few seconds passed and Chris let go, saying goodbye one last time for walking out of the café. This time it was you who watched him leave, and your heart shattered the same way his had when you had left him.
“I’d go back to December all the time”
Chapter 4.
Tumblr media
You groggily wake up with a heavy headache.
Your head was pounding so hard you almost collapsed on the floor as soon as you tried to get out of bed.
'What even happened last night?' Was what you would question yourself. But you didn't remember anything.
Anything but a stranger helping you home.
"Did he ever say his name to me..?" You try to remember but sadly fail.
"Wait a minute.." You quickly searched for your phone and found it in your purse on the kitchen counter.
It was fucking 9 am. And your shift starts at 8:30 am...
You frantically unlock your phone to send a message to your manager but to your surprise he already texted you first.
Tumblr media
After you reply back, you put your phone down on the counter and sigh. For the split second when you panicked your headache was gone but now it slowly started to come back again. You slump onto the chair and lay your head on the counter. Expecting to feel the wooden counter, but you instead feel a piece of paper.
You sit up straight again and look confused down at your counter and realize there was a sticky note pasted on it.
'Hey, we need to talk. Text me when you're awake. -06xxxxxxxx'
You were still dazed from your hangover but somehow thought it was Gorou's number because he said you could talk to him.. Right? And then he was probably the one who carried you home?
Whatever the case was, you were going to text the number.
Tumblr media
And then the person left you on read.
"So it's.. Gorou..?" You say with a confused expression.
It had to be him right? He was the one who wanted to talk to you after all..
'Whatever.. I should just eat some breakfast..' You think and put your phone on the counter. You make a simple egg and toast for breakfast and carry on with your day. Just cleaning up and doing some chores.
Tumblr media
Evening rolls around and it's almost 5 pm. You look at the text message again and start to wonder: what should you wear?
Because you've looked up Uyuu restaurant and it was a pretty expensive place.. It kinda made you wonder what police even make as a salary.
So because of your indecisiveness you decide to text your friends for what to wear!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After choosing your dress and contemplating on wearing the same jacket from last night (you decided to wear it) you leave your house and wait at the bus stop. The ride from Konda village to Inazuma city was pretty far, 30 minutes, but you have taken the bus for the past 5 years so it wasn't much of an issue.
Since summer was approaching that meant that the sun stayed up longer too, so no sign of darkness yet.
The bus itself was pretty quiet. Just you and a few other passengers, presumably to the same destination.
You take out your earphones and phone from your purse and start listening to music, enjoying the calm atmosphere around you.
In an instant, time seems to be passing by quickly and it was already the last bus stop. You and a few others step out the bus, each going separate ways.
You went on your phone to navigate where the restaurant was- which was only a 10 minute walk away.
As you walk into the restaurant you're met with the scent of Inazuman dishes being freshly prepared as well as people loudly chatting.
Everyone was dressed well, even the kids who may or may not unwillingly went. But like really really well dressed while you walk in with a casual dress.
"Miss L/n?" A waiter approaches you with a kind smile.
"A-ah yes, that's me."
"Please follow me to the vip room."
"vip room??" You exclaim in a shock.
"Yes, your husband booked it. Didn't you know?" The waiter chuckles.
"Huh.. No.." You mumble, completely unnoticing the fact that he called Gorou your husband.
"Oh and by the way, next time you come here just enter the other entrance. It's less crowded and only for the VIP guests." The waiter explains, showing you the quiet waiting room with the entrance leading to the other side of the restaurant.
"May I also inform you that he signed for a subscription under your name with his bank account linked to it? It's a yearly subscription for having access to the VIP rooms as well as other extra things we don't offer to normal guests.." He added.
"What??" So many things being explained in 5 minutes- you feel so confused.
"Yeah, he paid it for the next 10 years and everything that you order in those years will be charged under his bank account. Isn't he sweet?"
"Wait what-"
"Anyway, this is the room where you'll be dining. He requested for the room which was the most soundproof one which I wonder what he's planning for you~ It's officially under your and his name for the next 10 years so please enjoy it. If you need anything you can just order it from the tablet, however it seems like he already ordered some of your favorite dishes in advance. Isn't that just heartwarming?" The waiter sighs and looks proudly.
"Is there anything you want to order now? A drink? I can bring it right away then."
The waiter stares at you with a friendly smile while you are in shock, trying to process everything.
"Uhm.. A glass of water please." You mutter and take off your shoes, placing it on the wooden floor before carefully walking on the tatami floor where a large table with two seats were placed.
"Coming right up!" The waiter says, before giving you a chance to ask any questions.
Honestly now that you weren't hungover anymore you feel pretty weirded out by how Gorou arranged everything?
Like you just met him yesterday and he's already treating you like some goddess???
No way that that was logical?
Except... If he has a crush on you??? Wait. A. Fucking. Second.
Sure he was one of the sweetest person you met but what?? This is too much for you- You feel overwhelmed.
In a panic you pull out your phone, about to text Heizou and Sara. Though you immediately stop when the waiter comes with a beautiful glass filled with water.
He had put the glass on a plate with some fruit accompanying it.
"Please enjoy your water, miss."
He said and gently closes the door of the room.
You stare at the expensive looking water. Being intimidated just by thinking of how expensive it could be.
It looked even fancier than the f/f that was placed on the table like what the heck??
You take a sip and somehow are surprised at how clean it tastes. How did it taste different from the water at home??
Honestly you feel kind of weird just sitting here. You feel like you don't belong in this fancy restaurant.
You wait for 15 minutes, feeling kind of annoyed at the fact Gorou still hasn't arrived.
Then another 15 minutes pass by and still no sign. Not even a text.
In frustration you start to call Gorou, feeling super annoyed at this point.
"Hey Y/n! How can I-"
"Where are you??" You interrupt his cheery voice with your very irritated voice.
"Uhh at the station? Why? Do you need something?" Gorou asks, sounding concerned.
"Didn't you tell me to meet you at Uyuu restaurant? You even booked a vip room for us-?? Like what the fuck?" You kind of whisper yell.
"Y/n? What are you talking about? Are you drunk perhaps?"
Now you were even more confused. Was it not Gorou that texted you?
But you named the contact Gorou, right?
"I'll call you back..." You mutter and quickly hang up, looking through your contacts.
And there you find two contacts named Gorou.
You look at the previous conversations and it turns out the number you thought gorou texted you from was just another number.
Basically meaning you were meeting up with a fucking stranger??
You quickly get up and run to grab your shoes, sliding open the Shoji door with a hurry.
The waiter was talking with another waiter and noticed you and waves.
"Hey! Do you need anything?"
"Please tell me the name of the bank account this is registered on!" You request in a frantic state.
"Well, let me check.." The waiter pulls out his phone and scans the qr code on the wall.
"It's Raiden Kunikuzushi."
Mariana Jimenez-Watson or MJ works in a normal pub living life paycheck to paycheck. Nothing exciting happens to her except the occasional drunk getting thrown out. She's 24 working away and finds a wrench thrown into her very boring life. His name is Hobie and she thinks maybe, a little excitement isn't awful. In fact she might start to crave some change for once.
Small moments of Hobie meeting his world's MJ. AKA I made an MJ variant and I think she's neat.
Chapter 2
Exhaustion sweeps through her body as she wraps up her closing duties at the pub. She’s had a full night of plenty of drunk people and one, short but nice, visit from her new friend.
Hobie had been visiting semi regularly at the pub. He comes in enough that they have a decent rapport. If it’s a little flirty neither of them are mentioning it.
Hobie had popped in at the beginning of her shift to have a pint before he went to his night shift job. She had asked about it but he waved her off, saying it wasn’t special just night security.
“It pays the bills.” He had shrugged and that was that.
He was there for a half hour before walking off, giving her a quick goodbye. That was about as exciting as her night got.
Until she was roaming the streets to get back to her flat.
She hated this part the most, but usually she wasn’t so on edge when she walked home. She wrapped her jacket around her tighter, faux protection, but it made her feel better.
The streets are never fully dead in Old York, even in the early hours of three in the morning there’s always someone on the streets. Tonight, it’s eerily too quiet. She can hear some vehicles faintly in the distance and see some flickering street lights.
It all feels too far away though. She starts to quicken her pace, heart racing in her own paranoia. The lights no longer feel warm and welcoming, but dim and sinister. The night feels colder on her skin, especially for summer. It's wrong. It's just all wrong.
A motorcycle zooms by her, revving itself and it makes her jump. Her heart beating insanely out of her chest. She sighs and tries to talk herself down from the edge of panic. She's fine, she's done this walk a million times before. Nothings changed.
Too bad she doesn’t notice the real danger.
She passes an alley, one she's passed a hundred times over, and suddenly hands are grabbing her. Their firm and calloused and handle her roughly. She tries to swing her arms back but this person is much bigger than her. She inhales sharply, ready to shout, begging for someone to hear here. Then a hand covers her mouth trying to stop her from screaming.
Her anxiety spikes for a moment before she bites down on the hand. It's instinctive and she bites hard. She draws blood and the attacker hisses in pain, reeling back.
“Fuck!” He growls.
She takes her opening and yanks herself free. She elbows him in the gut, making a run and screaming at the top of her lungs.
“Help! Someone help me!” She uses all the air in her lungs to scream.
The attacker swipes at her again, “Shut up!” He pulls on her, wrapping his arms around her from behind. He pins her arms down to her side.
It doesn't stop her as she starts thrashing her body against him. Her voice is raw from her screams, she flails her legs and kicks him in the shins. The man immediately releases her and gives his own shout of pain.
She rolls onto the sidewalk for a brief moment. She regains her bearings and jumps up to try and run. She doesn’t get to do more than stand up before the man punches her in the face. The force sending her to the ground.
She groans in pain and tries to get back up on shaky arms, but he’s on top of her within a second. His hands ripping her back pack off of her.
There's a loud thud and just as quickly as he was sitting on her, his weights gone, as if he just disappeared. She turns to look and sees a pair of combat boots with blue laces standing near her.
She knows who it is. Anyone in Old York would know who it was. Her eyes slowly travel up and she sees that Spider-Man has the man who mugged her up against the brick wall of the alley. The man’s struggling against the vigilantes tight grip. Kicking his legs and squirming.
Spider-Man slams the guy into the wall once more, “Mugging a young woman at night's probably the biggest cliché innit?” he says in a joking tone. How he holds the man is no joke from the thud she heard when he slammed him against the brick.
The man doesn’t respond, he tries to squirm out of Spider-Man’s hold. Her mugger locks eyes with her on the ground, clearly frightened.
She almost scoffs, as if he didn't scare the living daylights out of her a few moments ago.
“Nah, nah, nah, it’s too late!” Spider-Man grabs the man by his cheeks, making him look at the spider.
“You’re dancing with me now, not her.” He releases the man and he falls to the ground dramatically like a rag doll.
The mugger quickly tries to stand up to run off, but Spider-Man just lazily watches him for a few minutes, hands on his hips and looking thoroughly unamused. He sighs and easily shoots his webs at him.
“Too easy, just too easy muggers are.” He mutters easily walking over and webbing the guy up in a cocoon. He raises the man high up, hanging him upside down above the ground.
“Hope someone finds you before that web disintegrates! You’ll have a nasty trip to A&E otherwise.” He jokes dryly.
The mugger starts to scream. His loud screech is cut off almost as soon as it starts by a web.
“People are trying to sleep here!” The vigilante hushes him, putting a finger up to his mask playfully.
Spider-Man turns around to face MJ, she’s still on the ground looking up at him bewildered. She's breathing heavily trying to calm herself down. Her arms are shaking trying hold herself up.
He holds out his hand to her. She looks at it hesitantly for a moment before gently placing her hand in his. He pulls her up easily, “You got a pretty bad shiner there.” He tells her, pointing to his own eye on his mask.
“Oh,” She grabs her phone to use as a mirror, “Bloody fucking hell.” She mutters sighing and grabs her bag off the ground muttering under her breath.
“You okay besides that?” He asks trying to look her over.
“I think so?” She answers nervously. “I’m too tired to really tell you honestly. Thanks, by the way.” She says looking over at him.
She’s seen Spider-Man on the news, online, in a few stray papers left in the pub, but she’s never been this close. Never had any interactions with him. It’s got her head spinning. Or maybe it’s the blow from landing face first on the cement.
“Do you want help getting home?” He offers.
She pauses only for a brief moment, “No I wouldn’t want to put you out like that, really. What are the odds I’d get mugged twice?” she tries to laugh it off.
“It wasn’t really a question, it’s three in the morning, I’m helping ya home.” The offer turns more into a demand and he gestures for her to lead the way.
She gives a soft awkward chuckle shaking her head, “Yeah, I guess you are.”
She goes to step forward but three steps in and her legs give out, buckling underneath her. He reaches out to catch her.
“I know I make people weak in the knees but I haven’t even gotten to start yet.” He jokes.
She scoffs but it turns into a laugh, “I think I might be in shock.”
He shakes his head, “Trust me, not shock, it’s the adrenaline wearing off. C’mon.” He slips his arm around her waist and gently moves to place her arms around his neck.
“I’d hold on if I were you, just tell me where to swing.”
She doesn’t have much time to prepare before they are in the air and she is clinging onto him like her life depends on it. She gasps as she feels the wind rush past them. She scrambles quickly to wraps her legs around him like a vice. Her stomach plummeting like she's on a roller-coaster.
She used to envy how Spider-Man swung around, now she just feels ill. It’s not for her, the swinging thing.
She somehow navigates him to her flat, bit it takes a while for her to open her eyes to even see. When he lands she is still gripping onto to him, knuckles turning white.
He gives a chuckle and pats her back. He whispers in her ear, “We’re on the ground now. You’re safe.” He teases.
She opens her eyes and sees her front door. Her face heats up in embarrassment and she almost falls over trying to pull herself off of him. “Sorry, sorry!” she says quickly.
He tilts his head and she just knows he’s smiling at her, she doesn’t know how, but she just feels it.
He reaches up and lightly brushes her cheek, “Put some ice on it.” He says softly.
She had almost forgotten about her eye entirely. His gently touch has her heart beating out of her chest. She just nods in silent acknowledgement.
As quickly as his hand had brushed her cheek he retracts it. He throws his arm back behind his head casually as he walks backwards.
“Don’t get caught up like that again okay? I’d hate for a gem like you to get hurt again.” He’s says cheekily and then he’s off, swinging away before she can respond.
She stands outside her door taking everything in. She’s a little stunned. She had been mugged and saved all at once and meet Spider-Man. Her heart was racing but she shoves it down, thinking it’s just her adrenaline.
What a weird night.
The next day she’s working again at the pub. She’s covered her black eye as well as she can with her makeup. None of her coworkers have seemed to spot it.
She’s serving a group of women when she spots Hobie coming in and she waves at him. He gives her a nod and sits in an empty seat along the bar.
When she finishes with her group, she makes her way over to him.
“What’s going on with you tonight?” She asks grinning.
He looks intensely at her, brows furrowed. “What happened to ya?” he asks softly brushing her cheek under her bruised eye.
She scoffs and pulls back for a moment, “Thought I covered it well enough.” She mutters brushing a stray hair behind her ear.
She turned to check the mirror attached the liquor wall and sure enough, purple was peaking through. She had hoped the dim lighting would cover it more.
“MJ…” he presses.
“Sorry. Um.” She turns back to him and gives him a tight smile, “No big deal really. Some guy tried to mug me after my shift last night.” She grabs a cup and cleans it avoiding his eyes.
She sees him tense up out of the corner of her eye. She keeps cleaning, trying to play it off. He stands and leans over the bar, gently cupping her chin to make her look up at him, “If someone hurt you, it’s a big deal.” He tells her.
She takes a shaky breath and pulls away slowly. Too intense.
Something about Hobie was just, too intense. Sometimes she loved it, like when he was recounting a story and never left a detail out. Loudly talking with his hands and just being passionate about everything all at once. She didn't enjoy it as much when he’s seeing through her craftily built walls.
“It’s fine Hobie really. Someone saw and stopped the guy and I went home. It coulda been worse.” She mutters putting the clean glass away and grabbing a new one.
He raises a brow at that, “Mmmhmm." He lets the silence hang for a moment, then he adds, "I’m walking ya home tonight.”
She whips her head to look at him incredulously, “No, you are not!” She sets the glass down to lean on the counter, eye level with him, “I have had this job long enough and closed many a night. It’s been one time something happened. I don’t need to be escorted-” she gives a huff and shakes her head.
“Yes I am. This isn’t about if you're tough enough MJ,” he grabs her hand and her eyes find his again. “This city just isn’t safe that late…” his tone is serious, more serious than she’s used too, but it’s gone as soon as it starts. “Especially for beautiful women.” He gives her a smirk.
She rolls her eyes and uses her cleaning rag to smack his chest lightly, “Stop taking the piss Hobie.” She shakes her head laughing.
“I’m not!” He’s chuckling too, “You are objectively, a beautiful woman.” She raises a brow at his flirtatious tone but she just smiles.
“You can walk me home tonight, but you can’t feasibly do it every night.” She tells him.
He gives her a grin in response.
February Filth Fest - Day 9
Pairing: Han x gn!reader Prompt: Oral Fixation WC: 1.8k Summary: Nervous habits are hard to break. In an effort to retrain yourself from a nasty nail biting habit you’ve started busying your mouth with other things. This has not gone unnoticed by your flatmate Han. Not even a little.  TW/CW: switches(both), weight mention (reader non-seriously worrying about weight), deepthroating, swallowing, oral (m! receiving), pet name(babe)
idk really what to tag here please if you need something specifically tagged literally ever just drop an ask anon or not and let me know, no questions from me needed. i’m tagging based on my own experience but several of my friends have fairly specific tw so i totally get it.
It started with lollipops. You were trying to keep yourself from biting your nails so to keep your mouth busy you bought an economy size bag of dum-dums. Han could barely handle those. Tongue twirling and flicking the hard candy frenetically. Cheek bulging as you tucked one casually in front of your teeth. Granted, he couldn’t look at you when you were deeply focused, working the lollipop between your tongue and the roof of your mouth sucking down the melted flavored sugar without a thought. At least the lollipops were small.
In the summer it was popsicles. There were two varieties you’d suck on, the natural and the novelty. Natural fruit popsicles were larger and wider, stretching your lips and cheeks to the extreme. They’d melt quickly and were hard to fit the whole in your mouth so you’d often work the sides as well as what you could fit of the tip, chasing the juice as it would trickle down and over your fingers, leaving a sticky trail to clean up after. Han knew your technique, keeping the sides perfectly balanced until the end so the icy treat wouldn’t slip off the stick. The novelty was classic rocket pop. Not a natural flavoring in any of the three bands of color. Perfectly tapered tip with a nice cylindrical shape. Easy to fit between your lips, no tugging or stretching. Even easier to catch the drips by simply sliding a little further down the shaft of the popsicle, no need to ever let it fall from your lips. By august you’d gotten your rhythm down, circle the end twice with your tongue, suck a little farther down, and back off to the tip, repeat.
Han memorized that rhythm. He could freestyle over it if he had to. Your oral fixation was his guilty pleasure. How many times had he pressed his dick back down in his pants, longing to replace your snacks with himself? Sometimes he could swear you were doing it just for him. Looking at him out of the corner of your eye as you took just a little too much of the popsicle in your mouth with a moan.
“I think I’m getting fat,” you groaned, pulling the popsicle from your mouth with a pop. “So? Then get fat.” Han didn’t dare look up from the manga he was intently staring at. You groan again dramatically. “What do you want me to say? I don’t care if you gain weight. Doesn’t mean shit to me.” You lean over the arm of the sofa and bat your eyelashes. “Tell me I'll still be hot even if I’m fat.” Han peeks over his manga, you're just barely sucking the tip of your popsicle, upper lip teasing the top of it coquettishly. “Doesn’t matter what your weight is, you’re stupid either way,” he grumbles and shoves his nose back into the book. “Ugh. Rude.” You scoff, continuing to observe him, slowly and pointedly licking your popsicle.
Han itches the back of his neck, trying to refocus. Every little errant twitch and prick he imagines on his skin has him twisting awkwardly into a new position to try to get comfortable. But he couldn’t. Not with you there looking at him, sucking like that. Tapping his big toe anxiously he locks eyes with you again. “Is there something else you need or…?” There’s an edge to his voice, lips sealed tightly. The tapping migrates to his whole foot, bouncing at the ankle. “I dunno,” you sigh. “I’m just bored. And you won’t tell me I’m hot so now I’m a little sad.” “You’re hot okay?” Han tries to avert his eyes, looking at you feels like staring into the sun. Red melty sugar drips down over your fingers, catching and pooling on your chest. He blinks, unable to comprehend what he’s seeing. You’ve broken your usual tempo but you seem unbothered. Han feels insane for noticing, he wants to ask why but it would be weird.
“Hmph,” you pout, slurping loudly around the icy treat. “You can’t even look at me.” Han lifts his manga up, head still stuck between the pages, “uh, yeah. I’m busy.” His whole leg bounces of its own accord. Sluuuurrrrp. His head jerks to the side, pants suddenly uncomfortably tight. Pressing the fabric at his leg he tries to shift himself tactfully. You grin. Sluuuuurrrp. He huffs, eyes boring into the pages. A man on a mission. Unflappable. Stalwart. Sluuuuuurrrp. “Mmmmmhm, oh my god, it’s so drippy!” Your cherry red tongue wraps around the shaft deliciously savoring each running droplet. “Can you do that elsewhere?” Han finally cracks, closing the manga and pinching his forehead, still hiding his eyes from you. Only the ring of blue left you feverishly work the popsicle in and out of your lips, removing the remainder with a pop. “I’m sorry I’ve just been really anxious I guess. I just need to keep my mouth busy,” you whine. “I’m out of popsicles though…” trailing off you stare at him pointedly. “Could you help me with that?”
The book drops to the floor. Hans hand gripping his knee tight. He pauses, blinking. “I’m…sorry? What? I-how?” You cannot possibly mean what he thinks you mean. Now he really feels like he’s hearing things. It must be the lack of blood flowing to his brain; there is just no way you were asking him that. “I need something to keep my mouth busy. Preferably low calorie. Ideally with some protein.” Han tries to keep his breathing steady and slow. He tries his best not to let his mind follow the path you are so clearly trying to lead him down. “Can you just spit it out please?” “For you babe, I’d swallow.” You giggle.
If this were a manga or anime Han’s nose would be shooting blood, head flung back from the force. Instead he leans back, legs spread wide on the couch, inhaling deeply. “You cannot be serious.” “I can be if you want me to.” He finally looks at you to size you up. One eyebrow cocked, you smile slightly, tongue poking the inside of your cheek. “Hannie, I’ve seen the way you watch me. I might act dumb but I'm not stupid. I see how you scurry away to jack off in your room. The walls aren’t that thick. Now, can you help my little…situation…or not?” You rest your hand on his knee, leaning over him suggestively. His mouth hangs open, the lump in his pants twitches. “You want to suck me off?” All your bravado drains from your body. Hearing it from his mouth so bluntly. “Err…yeah I thought that was obvious. Yeah, if you want me to.”
Han’s hand finds its way to the back of your neck, pulling you into a kiss, sticky and tart. Still a little cool, the friction quickly warms your lips, your tongue still tasting faintly of blue raspberry and lime. The blue dye still fresh leaves a faint tinge of purple behind on his lips which he licks from the lower. Eyes locked, neck still cradled in his palm, you slowly lower to your knees tucked between his thighs. “Put your head right here babe,” he pats the crux of his inner thigh. Laying your head down he rakes his hand through your hair, other hand busy undoing his pants. He never lets your face leave his sight, tugging his swollen dick out over the top of his waistband and giving it a few pumps. The thickness makes your mouth water and stomach flip, tapered nicely to an angry red tip. Smiling, you hang your tongue out loose and wide as he rubs the underside across your cheek and chin. “Fuck, you think it’ll fit?” He drags himself over your lips, spit bubbling and coating him. “I’ve been practicing.” Han beams, “the popsicles?” “Mhm,” you mumble, lips pursed and working up and down the section of him they can reach. His cock throbs, a bead of precum forming at the tip. “You’re so hot.” “Perks of my particular habit.”
Tipping your head upwards he gently feeds you his length, tip prodding the inside of your cheek, stretching it and leaving its outline. The two of you sit there peacefully as you swallow around him, sucking in short intervals. Lips stretched around him, your vision goes hazy, blissfully humming around him. “Fuck I could watch you do this for hours,” Han muses. You mumble something incoherent. “Babe don’t talk with your mouth full,” he smirks, stroking your cheek lovingly.  His other hand slips under your head and begins to tilt you over his pelvis. Guiding you slowly up and down, your cheeks hollow and bulge with each motion. Slowly he gives you more and more of his cock, head just barely breaching the tight ring of your throat. His breathing grows more ragged, stomach tensing as he groans. You gurgle as he presses deeper, little by little he’s less gentle, hips joining his arms in thrusting you down on him. Pulling you off, vacuum of your mouth popping loudly, he grips your chin, thumb wiping the mix of spit and precum from your lower lip. “Can you take all of me? All the way?” Han looks almost as fucked out as you, jaw loose and chest heaving. You smile proudly and nod, eyelashes sticking together slightly. You place your hands on his thighs for support and you take him between your lips.
“Oh shit-” he stutters as you slide him all the way down, nose bumping into his pelvic bone. Your throat squeezes and revolts at the intrusion, massaging him with every attempt to remove the invader. Focused on breathing through your nose you barely notice his hands pressing you down hard, bouncing your head into his stomach. His thighs tense in your grasp, “oh shit- oh shit- oh fuck- I’m gonna cum- I’m gonna fucking cum- your throat- I’m gonna cum-”
Quickly your hand pinches his thigh and he releases you, coughing, lungs pumping air frantically. Tilting your head back, tongue out he rests the tip on the muscle, fisting his length.  Eyes rolling back in his head, ass flexed, he moans transitioning into a high pitched whine as he coats you with his release. Mouth hung open, presenting his load, you make a show of rolling your tongue back in and swallowing it down. Wiping the mess from your lips with your middle finger you lick off the remainder, sucking just the tip like you did his cock. “Thanks Hannie! I think that really helped.”
