Alright, I’ll be serious.

For the record, I’m not sure that there is as much free time as one’d think. The Volturi are the one organization in the world keeping vampires from destroying the world, and there’s only 30-something of them. And there are only two of Jane and Alec, only one Demetri.

I think they’re extremely busy, to the point where I can believe that Jane and Carlisle never met. It’s a bit strange, yes, but this girl and her brother are running on foot to every corner of the world to keep the wheel turning. It’s no surprise she can’t slum it at home.

But there are only so many vampires, and only so many non-vampire threats.

I touched upon it here, in part because I felt bad for anon. They asked for fluffy headcanons, I replied, “eh, they’re miserable bastards" so I added my theatre headcanon at the end there. Then like this guy I added that last paragraph, now I’m feeling mildly self-conscious about the whole post. Should have kept it at the miserable bastards.

In short, even Volturi need to unwind sometime. Sports aren’t really an option, as they’d have to leave Volterra to do it without humans noticing. I’m sure there’s smaller games being played on excursions when there’s nothing else to do, like a game of tennis on the way to or fro a mission, but when it comes to what Aro would put together to entertain the coven... I think Hellenistic theatre.

Athens had a very particular brand of theatre. Basically people would write plays, produce and perform them, and then the best play was crowned winner. Athenian actors were all men, and they all wore masks. There would be a chorus. In the early days of this thespian tradition there was only one actor, but as the years went by this was expanded to two, then three actors.

In other words you have a lot of room for creativity, all the room in the world, and something to interest everybody. Script writing, costume design, acting, and the sky is the limit for what you can do. A maximum of three actors allows for small teams, so you can have many competitors. Plus, this formula means that if people are called away on missions halfway through the planning, they can return to the “game” months or years later, no problem.

Mostly, I think Aro is just the type to make his guard do this. He claims it’s about preserving his cultural heritage, but really it’s about the flashy costumes, hammy acting, and sheer showmanship of it all.

For the record I firmly believe Carlisle was recruited to play Helen in the genderbent Illiad. 

(I hope I don’t come across as pretentious or show off-y when I do this- but here are a few recs for Ancient Greek plays. They’re a very particular style, but compelling and absolutely worth the read. Notice how there are never more than three people on stage at once:

Sophocles:

Oedipus Rex. Yes, that story. Guy kills his dad, marries his mom, finds out.

Oedipus at Colonus. Direct sequel to Oedipus Rex. Oedipus is blind, disgraced, dethroned, and miserable. He seeks absolution for what happened in the last play.

Antigone. Sequel to Oedipus at Colonus. Antigone is Oedipus and Iocasta’s daughter, and her life is terrible.

Euripides, a great tragedy writer:

Medea. As in, Medea who was married to Jason. You’ve probably heard of her. I strongly recommend Euripides’ version, the ending is a gutpunch.

Bacchae. A very interesting depiction of Dionysus where he pretty much goes “oh you thought I was the funny drunk guy. Well, I just hypnotized your daughter into killing her child.”

There’s also the comedian Aristophanes, whose works I unfortunately never read but if I’ve ignited a flame in anybody, go google him.)

HISTORY:

Some people can see magic in the smallest thing, believing that it’s out there somewhere. Medea had always been that person, except for the fact that she knew it was real. Being the daughter of two witches, it didn’t take long for her to real about the powers that she possessed. Medea was born the second daughter of the infamous Carlisle couple. Her father, who really didn’t know what he was doing, tried his best to give the girls a good life. However, her mother soon realized that she really didn’t have a need for children. They just seemed to get in the way of the plans that her and the girl’s father were going to do. Beyond them though, was her sister, Hestia. Medea has never known a moment where Hestia wasn’t there to make the day better. A missed birthday? Hestia had a back up plan. Fireworks on the Strip? Hestia made sure they were there. Their mother leaving them? Hestia found a way to make it all better. Anything bad that would happen, Hestia seemed to always have a plan.

When their mother left, Medea stood behind her sister, watching as their father yelled for her to come back, even chasing her out of their crappy motel room. It was always easier to move when your life only consisted of different motel rooms, but they still never left Las Vegas. At this point, their father now had two young girls to look after. Alongside of his attempts to try and trick the bars and casinos out of their money, he took odd jobs in order to get the girls things they wanted. Books for them to read, toys for them to play with, and things that they could do. It was secret to anyone who knew their father that he was a bit of a shady guy when he needed to be. Usually disguising any trips, he had to make to meet “business partners” with the idea of going to the water parks, zoos, or just a trip down the strip to see the lights. Medea, being the more positive child only saw these as fun trips they all got to do together. She never thought as a child that their father was bad at what he had to do. He was there, most of the time, and gave them as much as he could, how could that be bad? What none of them knew was that someone was on their way to try and give the girls a more solid life.

One day, when Medea and Hestia were playing in the motel room while their father came up with his next scam, someone came knocking on their motel door. Visitors weren’t normal, so the girls both were confused, especially when the door opened and an old woman stood on the other side of it. Turns out, it was their grandmother. She had heard rumors of a couple creating schemes out there, but when she heard about the two little girls with them, she had to come out. The old woman continued to argue with their father, telling him she was going to take the girls because they need a stable life. They needed someone who can teach them magic properly and pass on the traditions of their family. Their father fought back, for reasons the girls didn’t know. Medea was next to her sister, holding onto her for she didn’t know what was going to happen. She already lost her mother, was she really about to lose her father?

Eventually the argument came to an end and the two girls were soon moving to their grandmothers’ home. At first it was uncomfortable for them because they didn’t know the woman. She just showed up out of no where and wanted them to live with her? However, Medea always being the optimist, she did everything she could to make the situation good. Thankfully she did because her grandmother quickly became one of the most influential people in her life. Teaching her everything she could know about magic and different ways to harness it. No stone went unturned, and they were constantly in lessons on what they should be doing with their magic and what they shouldn’t be doing. By the time the girls were older, they had become part of their own business with in magic, creating a life for themselves. They got birthday and Christmas cards from their father, usually late, but the communication was scarce.

Something Medea never expected was to be separated from her sister, however, when Hestia told her she wanted to leave, Medea didn’t stop her. While she could’ve, she knew that her sister needed time to herself. Besides, with today’s technology, they’d always have the chance to talk with each other. When her sister went off, Medea found herself taking care of her grandmother more, even travelling with her off to different countries in order to handle whatever business she had. She had moments where she went off and lived her own life, but usually she spent her time helping in whatever was needed. The hardest part was waiting to hear from Hestia again, especially in the moments when she went off the grid. It was a couple years before her and Hestia were reunited completed, if only it had been on better terms.

Their grandmother’s death is what brought the girls back together. Medea felt herself breaking for weeks as she accepted the idea of losing yet another person from her life. Once Hestia had gotten back, Medea felt like she had a little bit of herself back. Of course, she busied herself with trying to take care of her sister, taking care of those her Grandmother worked with, and getting the funeral taken care of. At first, she didn’t think she’d want to stay in her Grandmother’s house, but she soon learned she couldn’t leave it. So now she takes care of the home, while working odd jobs and part time at the Carousel Bar as a bartender.

Life has always thrown difficulties at Medea, and given her trials that she has had to learn from, but it’s never dampened her spirit. It’s never stopped her from knowing that she is still strong and able to take care of those around her.

A house of ten (nine if you don’t count the cat) attempt to come to terms with their abilities -- and with each other, turns out culture clashes become quite the issue when everyone is from a different era; who would have thought?

If that sounds kinda interesting, I got a whole lot below! Split into some Worldbuilding, and then the actual Characters.

The world

The bridge in the gap between the mythical and the mundane are the Immortals -  humans born with the secret of immortality locked away in their code. This supposed “gene” is theorized by many mythical-users to be the product of a human family having secret mythic blood somewhere in the family. Within humans, this materializes as a type of immortality that activates upon a (usually early) death. The immortality in question heals all natural wounds and freezes the individual at the age of their first official death -- it is said that these deaths must come with a certain amount of adrenaline in order to activate it, but the exact situation needed is as of yet unknown.  This has been used as an explanation by many as to why the vast majority of immortals have violence and unexpected stories intertwined with their deaths. By some arguments, an immortal-blooded human could easily live, grow old and die without knowledge of their abilities.

Furthermore, the activation of an individual’s immortality has been known to heal all former physical wounds to a certain extent, as well as provide de-ageing in cases where the body is returned to a peak physical state within its life cycle -- old magic runs in the blood of an immortal, and old magic provides in every way it can.

Immortals are a topic of controversy within the mythical world -- to some, they should be welcomed as full members, to others, they were merely extensions of the humankind that cast them out. Regardless, immortals remain a secret to most of human society (aside from hunters and regulators)  and are overseen by reapers, who use magic to both track and keep an eye on newly-emerging immortals, and who are usually the ones to both explain what has happened and welcome them into the mythical world.

Immortals, minority as they are, tend to band together within small groups, and most find themselves more at ease within the human realm than that of the mythical. Here is one such group -- a safe haven originally created by Lucian out of his estate manor, now turned to flatmates in a still luxurious house.

The characters

Lucian Carlisle - A businessman and artist both in the past and the present, Lucian was born into luxury at the height of the Victorian era in Britain, though he has certainly changed with the times. Gentle, soft-spoken and eager to help those like him, Lucian began the haven for the immortals currently living with him -- and while he is certainly easy to take advantage of, even he has his limits, with a sharp tongue at times. Bubbly, excitable and with an optimism for life that has only strengthened with the decades, Lucian hopes only to see the world improve, keeping up the belief that the future is bright. He is the lover of Simeon Alford -- with whom he has spent the longest and was killed by and in turn killed. (It’s a long story, and, well, they’re both over it.)

Simeon Alford - A partial-musician and full-time cynic, Simeon was born to a lower-middle-class family in the Victorian era, ending up serving at the Carlisle estate. After wrapping up in shady business with an inheritance-hungry cousin, Simeon, both for the money and out of spite, found himself in an assassination-attempt gone-wrong and discovering his immortality in possibly one of the most awkward ways; alongside the person you attempted to murder. Fortunately, the years have allowed hostilities to fade. Bitter, pessimistic and overall full of dark humour, Simeon is most often the opposite of his now-lover, Lucian Carlisle, whom he most often claims to be the only human that he can stand. Simeon cares little for the way the world has progressed, sticking to his belief that at their core, people never really change.

Nikita Dmitrievsky - A revolutionary and now budding culinary artist, Nikita Dmitrievsky, Nikita lived and died during the reign of the Soviet Union under Stalin -- namely, dying during the Great Purge. Nikita hungers for the justice that he dreamed of in his own time, and never saw, and refuses to be disillusioned by those that still remain in the world; he believes in fighting on for what he believed in so long ago, even in small ways; and that immortality will grant him the gift of seeing that world eventually. He believes fiercely in his ideals, hard work and remains dedicated -- and prefers to keep to himself. He is the (eventual) lover of Matthias Townsend, an initial rival due to their conflicting beliefs; which in the end turn out not to be so different after all.

Matthias Townsend - A sharpshooter and determined annoyance, Matthias fits the stereotype of the obnoxious American. Born and raised during the days of the wild west, Matthias is a self-proclaimed cowboy who still prides himself on adventure. Despite dying in a shoot-out with several others (and being the only one to return), Matthias still refuses to shy away from a fight. Hot-headed and argumentative, the years have done nothing to calm his attitude. He’s rather stuck in his ways, bordering on offensive at times, with little care for others or their opinions of him. This attitude has led to him to clash, primarily, with Simeon Alford, with a strong rivalry forming between the two. He is also the (eventual) lover of Nikita Dmitrievsky, after initial misunderstandings are cleared.

Elizabeth Brennan - A writer and reluctant therapist of the group. Elizabeth was born in Ireland in the early 1800s, dying at the hands of her husband early in her life -- as such, her first return from death was marked by taking revenge upon him, as well as upon other threats in her life and the lives of others. Her string of murders remained unsolved in her time, and she remains in fear that she will be discovered now despite the cases being long forgotten. Elizabeth has calmed since her bloodthirsty hunt, preferring instead to now strive for peace; a difficult feat in a house such as the one she now occupies. He focuses on remaining calm and mediating the more volatile conversations that most often arise. She is the lover of Kimiko, and was the one who initially snuck her into the house.

Kimiko - A warrior and overall enigma, little is known about Kimiko -- in fact, this is the only name she claims to have, and it is unknown if this is her true one or if any way related to it. Kimiko prefers to keep largely to herself, reaching the heights of being an introvert. During her first few months at the house, she was smuggled in by Elizabeth to avoid social interaction, and remained hidden in one of the many spare rooms until she was discovered by Simeon. As with everything else about her life, Kimiko’s past is a guarded secret; while she is clear on being born in Japan, she is vague with other pieces -- claiming sometimes to be a Onna-bugeisha, sometimes to be a pirate, and other times she claims the heritage of nothing more than a normal village girl. She prefers not to speak of her past. She is the lover of Elizabeth Brennan, her closest confidant.

Eduard Adler - A doctor and experimenter, Eduard remains dedicated to researching their immortality to discover exactly how it works, in order to better preserve their own life and understand what they are. Eduard and born and raised in Germany, and died as a rebel against the Nazi regime -- something Eduard remains proud of to this day, and he still holds a firm belief is resisting injustice wherever he can. He is teased, frequently, over the fact that he is the only one of the group who could theoretically still be alive without the immortality.  Eduard prefers to keep to his new research lab in the house, finding it difficult to interact socially with others outside of experiments. Primarily, he feels intimidated by Simeon, and avoids Matthias due to feeling targetted for him for teasing. He found friendship in the quiet of Kimiko, and as of late found himself the object of Medea’s affections -- a fact he doesn’t quite know what to do with.

Medea - An adrenaline-junkie and troublemaker, Medea, much like Kimiko, has little of her past known. Though this is less out of secrecy and more out of lack of care. Medea remembers little of her past, and when she does she tends to embellish it. Of Greek descent, Medea (as she claims her name to be), claims to have existed in broad ‘Spartan times’, though she recalls little of what her life was like aside from clearly fictional stories. Loud-mouthed, brash and lacking any sense of self-awareness or boundaries, Medea can often be overwhelming. She is extremely proud of her strength, often showing off by lifting heavy objects as well as people (with or without consent). Medea is the best friend of Matthias, marking her, in Simeon’s eyes, as another rival, something that she doesn’t necessarily agree with or acknowledge. Medea has set her affections, for the time being, on Eduard Adler.

Bartholomew Alford-Carlisle - The pet cat of Simeon and Lucian, and the only non-immortal creature in the house; though it may be enchanted to live longer than a usual cat. Bartholomew, known as Mew by the others, is the backbone of the house, as well as the only living thing other than Lucian that Simeon claims to actually love, or even like.

Victorie - A researcher and the go-to member of the house for all things modern technology. While one of the older members of the house era-wise, Victorie is the youngest when it comes to physical age. Remaining at the age of 12-13 years old, Victorie died young during the era of the first French revolution, killed by a local murderer within her town. She forgets much of her life, still, preferring to go with the flow of time, and as a result, is much more up-to-date with modern technology than the others within the house, and is most often the one to show them how such things work. Victorie has become more social with the changing times, and is closest with Lucian and Simeon, being the first other immortal they welcomed to their home. She regards them, for the most part, as her new family.

hestia is the granddaughter of the witch from brave. she’s got a scottish accent

and yes that would make hestia a witch too, but also a wood whittler, though not always in that order. 

hestia adores her younger sister medea. would do anything to protect her. do not mess with hestia when it comes to her sister. she will fight. 

hestia is a closed off, snippy, slightly sarcastic and occasionally disenchanted by a lot of things. but in reality she a smol bean who just wants to find true love, keep her sister safe and be a good witch.

she is extremely smart, sometimes too much for her own good but she loves history and if she’s not at the shot she is probably reading or learning something

speaking of shops she owns a shop with her sister and makes everything in it. magic does help but it’s all her

even though she is snippy, hestia will always make room for you in her home. if you need a place to stay or eat then as her namesake she give it. but she less forgiving. hurt her once and you will have to work your way to her good graces. 

has always dreamed of romance but will never tell you that.(talk to me about a wanted connection)

hestia just wants to keep her sister safe, her shop open and get a good cup of coffee. she feels like she’s not asking much.

2) 📝 book that everyone has to read: i’m gonna assume this doesn’t relate to series or anything so i’m gonna choose either the “aeneid” or “to kill a mockingbird”

8) 🎁 book that was surprisingly good: books 2 and 3 in the “captive prince” trilogy maybe ?? when i read the first book i was put off and was worried that it was romanticising things it shouldn’t but i powered on bc of all the good recs and it turned out to be good (altho i won’t deny there r still a few things i’m not happy w canon-wise)... also the fan art and fics r lit amazing

9) 😡 book you expected more of: ummm i think i’m gonna go with “jane eyre” actually bc i’d watched the film and thought it’d be something i really liked but i actually found it kinda dull and really didn’t get into it 

27) 😱 best plot twist: this is actually kinda hard bc i tend to see plot twists in films more than books ((i love psychological thrillers)) so i’m gonna go with a book that got turned into a film and that’s “shutter island” honestly it is INCREDIBLE the twist KILLED ME however i acc recommend watching the film first AND THEN the book bc u notice so much more and it doesn’t take anything away from it i swear ((if u choose to watch it don’t look up too much abt it in case it gets SPOILED))

autobiography of red by anne carson -- written in a poetic style which some people admittedly may not like but i LOVED it like it was honestly so wild and it felt so surreal but i couldn’t stop reading and read it in one sitting 

the devil’s queen by jeanne kalogridis -- if ur not into historical fiction then this may not appeal to you a huge amount but it’s abt catherine de medici and how she became queen but it involves sorcery and dark magic and deaths etc but in such a realistic way if u get me... it’s GOOD 

not really BOOKS but i also recommend the war poetry of siegfried sassoon and wilfred owen, much ado about nothing by shakespeare, and medea by euripides

Almost feels like forever since I’ve been here, but I’m Katie! Back from my hiatus. I’m always up for some plotting and can’t wait to rp with you all! Here is my small bundle: 

Adeline Cullen: Irish. Werewolf. Actress for After the Storm and Tales of Terror. Kind of odd and sassy, but really just doesn’t give a fuck. Will share her thoughts and opinions, but does it in a constructive way, or so she thinks. 

Atlas Rumbold: Just over one hundred. British. WWI Vet. Harpy. Executive Story Editor for Operation Unknown. Is like an actual grandfather. Don’t ask him for technology advice. Pessimistic, but is nice when you get to know him. 

Gage Aberfoth: 143 years old. Vampire. Welsh. Musician. Sound Editor for Tales of Terror. Loves to joke and just be happy. Is just hoping to find his wife after all this time. Loves to chat. Sarcasm is a must. 

Hope Lagardi: Human. Head of PR. Literally just wants to be a good mom. Loves her daughter. Super friendly and sweet. Sometimes gets herself into trouble, but it just living her best life. 

Jacob Meadows: Hedge Witch. Director for Weather the Storm. All around good guy. secretly captain america. It’s hard to really piss him off, but overall he’d love to talk and get to know more people he works with. 

Medea Carlisle: Witch. SFX make up artist for the whole studio. Loves her sister Hestia. Literally just wears her heart on her sleeve and is cute as a button. Can be somewhat naive, but isn’t completely. She just wants to be nice and have adventures.
