I don't wanna be too like, emotional right now or anything, but every single Martyr in Gaza, and across Palestine right now, I can do nothing but grieve, I hear daily, nonstop, of another family, another father, another mother, sons, and daughters, and it feels like a punch in the gut, every single time. I can feel the sorrow, and guilt, and pain, of every single person being murdered senselessly. And it feels so daunting, so impossibly unchangeable that I can do nothing. However, I know I can do something, I know I can help. I'm desperate to do something like in Oakland, Italy, where ships are being blocked, where arms and munitions are being destroyed and prevented from killing more Innocents, but I also just want to be there with the people of Gaza, to render aid as much as I can, I am a worker of medicine, and the flagrant, obsessive, obvious disregard Israel and their compatriots use against my field, my peers and coworkers, fills me with a rage to which I could strangle netanyahu and ever member of that despicable hideous blot on the map.
Free Palestine 🇵🇸

I have completely underestimated how hard it is to have compassion for people that are in fact rude, racist, misogynistic people. People assume that those who work in the medical field need to hold up this fortitude against verbal attacks and absolute disrespect for us as human beings by patients. Most of the time it is so much easier to become numb to it. But they deserve the best care possible, so becoming numb leads to poor patient care. So how can I keep doing this without completely burning out? I think its really fucked up to image health care providers should have to always rise above with no feelings hurt, because feelings and psyches and mental health get wrecked everyday. Can anymore give me guidance with compassion?

I know this blog bounces around a lot content-wise but I have to say this war on Gaza is physically hurting me.
I didn't have this reaction to the war in Ukraine. That is a military fighting a military with relatively low civilian causalities. The civil war in Sudan didn't give me as strong a feeling except when I learned about the civilians trapped in their homes or the ethnic genocide in the Darfur region. In Gaza, there is no army fighting another army. There is a small resistance militia struggling against one of the best funded militaries in the world. Almost all of the deaths are civilian deaths and it's not unintentional. It's very very intentional.
I've come to realize I don't care about the death of soldiers. It sucks, those are human lives, but they made their choice. Civilians never chose to be on the front lines. The front line came to them, bombed them from the sky and ran over them with tanks on the ground.
Do you know why they're targeting a hospital? Why the maternity hospital was bombed? Why Al Shifa is being bombed and overrun right now? Why they've targeted medical workers and ambulances since the beginning? Because the less people there are who can fix injured people, the more overall people die. And Israel wants them to die. Including the mothers, the children, and the babies. Because this is a genocide! And that's how you stop a population from replicating or increasing their numbers. This has been Israel's goal since they took over the Gaza Strip, since the 1960s and earlier even. It's not anti-semetic propaganda, there are declassified meeting minutes where the higher ups in government openly discuss this (read Ilan Pappe's The Biggest Prison on Earth).
Knowing this, seeing this, living in a country that supports this (America), being part of the ethnicity that is committing these crimes (I'm Jewish), not being able to do anything to stop it from happening, it all hurts me. I can feel it in my heart and my lungs as they skip or tighten. I only watch the news for a 1/2 hour in the morning and I avoid doomscrolling, but just the small amount of exposure that I have makes me feel so much. It's desperation and despair and defiance. It's fear and guilt and anger and hope. I don't know what to do with it all besides let it bleed out a little at a time in conversations or posts like this one.

Memorable times in the hospital lab:
When a teenage girl had her blood drawn while she was obviously in rigor mortis and seconds after her lactic acid resulted the medical examiner called and demanded every one of her blood tubes STAT
When I picked up a dudes urine tube and felt telepathic pain and when I looked at it under the microscope his bladder cells were cancerous
When a patient was literally bleeding from his aorta and the doctors almost risked it all to clear our entire blood supply
When a patient who was bleeding out in the ED had such rare blood that finding donor blood that wouldn't immediately kill him became a state-wide hunt for a fucking organ donation
When some dude had both Chlamydia and gonorrhea so bad that the bacteria managed to grow in the incubator
When there was a positive syphilis result on a patient actively giving birth
When we found that a baby was getting jaundice because the mothers breast milk was killing his liver
The gunshot wounds that turned the ED waiting room into a trauma bay, an operating room, and a blood bank, all at the same time
When we found out a patient undergoing active psychosis was Like That™ because his brain was being attacked by COVID, and that's why no drug was working
When someone had such little blood capacity after smoking for 30 years that we had to report it to the department of health
The dude that was fucking asymptomatic for MULTIPLE strains of HIV??????
When we found out a patient had like, no oxygen in his blood, but somehow managed to drive to the blood drawing station ???
The patient who was literally peeing out dirt from a liver that was actively rotting away from drug use
Ask me more about medical laboratory sciences and how much I get paid for this shit

when the batboys get broken bones or other things that can't be fixed in the batcave, and have to go to an actual hospital, they make up the most outlandish sounding excuses for their injuries:
dick (with a broken leg): "well you see, i was actually trying to jump over a river on a pair of rollerskates"
jason (with broken ribs): "i was volunteering at the zoo... feeding the alligators. i fell backwards with the meat in my hands, and one pounced on me. funny how much damage they can do."
tim (with the worst concussion man has ever seen): "oh that? i was walking outside.. and my brothers were playing basketball on the top floor of the house, and one of them accidentally threw the ball out the window, and it landed on my head"
(bruce hears that one and has to reconsider whether or not the version of the story tim told him (getting hit by condiment king's mustard launcher) was the truth or not)
damian (with fingers twisted in every direction): "i play the piano... very violently"

Whenever I talk about the medical neglect and ableism I've encountered as a victim of the healthcare system, there's always some cockwaffle who feels entitled to come into my inbox and make the argument of "not all doctors" while talking about how "people like them" (because it's always someone in a field of medicine who does this) are doing their best and it's really hard because so many people fake being ill to get on welfare (Yikes), but like, yeah, obviously #not all doctors, because if all doctors were negligent, bullying scum bags, I'd be dead.
But here's the thing: while I truly believe that the majority of doctors are doing their best in a system stacked against them and their patients, their presence does not negate the mass harm caused by the bad ones. And there are far more bad ones than you realize.
Fuck, John Oliver literally did a segment on this last week:
youtube
Yes, the truly bad, malicious doctors are in the minority. Most are just horrifically burned out and fighting a losing battle against a system, killing both them and their patients through a lack of funding and resources and profound overwork.
But the malicious ones do exist, and they will go out of their way to harm patients who don't kowtow to them.
I almost lost my life because when I was in my early twenties, I told a doctor I didn't think she was listening to me, and I disagreed with her assessment of my mental health (she was not a mental health doctor, and I was there for heart palpitations and chronic pain). She retaliated by putting "non-compliant" in my file.
There was also a fun little "doesn't show respect" note too that lives rent-free in my head because I know I wasn't rude. I was polite. I just didn't agree with her, and my refusal to accept her off-handed comment that "you probably have bipolar or BPD" (again, I was there for heart palpitations and chronic pain) meant I was "refusing care."
I wasn't. I just refused to be slapped with a mood/personality disorder when I was there because I kept fucking fainting when I stood up.
(Spoiler alert: it was dysautonomia)
That "non-compliant" marker followed me around for years. It followed me across an ocean and effectively ensured that any doctor I saw was going to treat me like absolute dogshit because no one wants to help Difficult Patients. It wasn't until I was so undeniably ill, literally on the brink of death, that anyone helped me.
I'm alive because of a good doctor. And all the good ones that came after him because of him.
So, I know they exist. You don't have to tell me that.
But I really fucking need you to acknowledge the bad ones and that you're part of a system with a long, long history of abusing minorities and vulnerable people. I need you to acknowledge that because it's the only way we're going to survive this godforsaken nightmare and make things better.
So yeah, #notalldoctors, but if you feel the need to say that because someone talking about being literally left to die by the medical system hurts your feelings, I'm going to have to ask you to take a step back and ask yourself if you're going into medicine for the right reasons.
Namely: do you want to help people, even the "difficult" ones?
Even the ones who might disagree with you?
Even if they're on welfare?
Even if they'll never get "better" in a way that means "cured"?
Just a thought. But hey, what do I know. I'm just someone who experienced hemolytic anemia because doctors kept telling me I was anxious and needed to exercise more 🤷‍♀️.
