NHẤT THIẾT DUY TÂM TẠO. Thiền Sư Viên Minh. "Nhất thiết duy tâm tạo" không có nghĩa là tâm tạo ra hết, từ núi non đến trăng sao gì cũng tâm tạo ra. Không phải vậy. Mà nhất thiết duy tâm tạo nghĩa là THÁI ĐỘ của mình đối với cái thực tại mình đang đối mặt hằng ngày này. Niết Bàn hay địa ngục đều là thái độ của mình đối với cái thực tại này. Không phải là chúng ta làm cái gì đó để đi đến một cái niết bàn nằm ở đâu đó. Không phải như vậy. Ở đây là Niết Bàn hoặc ở đây là địa ngục hoặc ở đây là súc sanh, ở đây là ngạ quỷ hay thiên đàng. Nếu chúng ta ở đây và bây giờ có một cái tâm sáng suốt hoàn toàn vô ngã vị tha thì đó là tâm Phật, tâm Bồ tát. Nếu chúng ta hoàn toàn thanh tịnh giải thoát thì đó là tâm A La Hán. Nếu chúng ta hoàn toàn thuận pháp thì đó là tâm Tu Đà Hoàn. Nếu chúng ta hiền thiện vui vẻ thanh thoát thì đó là tâm các cõi trời. Nếu chúng ta sống đâu đó đàng hoàng có tình có lý thì đó là cõi người. Nếu chúng ta sống chỉ biết có ăn có ngủ chỉ biết hưởng thụ thôi thì đó là súc sanh. Nếu chúng ta mỗi ngày chỉ biết khao khát cái này khao khát cái kia, mong muốn cái này, mong muốn cái nọ thì đó là tâm ngạ quỷ. Nếu chúng ta muốn quyền hành, ở trong nhà thì muốn là gia trưởng, ra ngoài thì muốn điều khiển mọi người thì đó là tâm A tu la; hễ ai không nghe lời mình thì mình nổi sân. Nếu mình sống trong hung ác và đau khổ , vừa hung ác vừa đau khổ với những hung ác đó thì đó là địa ngục. Do đó thái độ của mình đối với cái thực tại này như thế nào là quyền tự do của mỗi người. Phật bảo: - Các ông chưa luận đến tột được ý nghĩa của sự khổ, cái khổ trong đời không có gì hơn là có thân. Tất cả những việc đói khát, nóng bức, kinh sợ, sắc dục, oán hận đều do có thân thôi. Lẽ thật phải đúng như vậy chăng? Tất cả thứ tạo tác trên đời nào là mưu mô, gian xảo, tranh giành, giết hại lẫn nhau là vì cái gì? Nếu ngoài thân thì là cho ai? Tham lam ái dục là vì cái gì? Cũng vì cái thân thôi. Sân hận thù nghịch là vì cái gì? Cũng vì cái thân. Đói khát kinh sợ cũng vì cái thân. Rõ ràng có thân là khổ, là chỗ tập trung cái khổ.
