#was literally just peacefully taking a showr and had to stop and get out to make this post#got momentarily possessed ig. wrote of all of this from the HEART#but yeah like.... literally all of this is just a corporate war to try to make more money than the other guy with marvel characters#hulk and spider-man have been screwed over a bit too! the f.f. had their comics stopped for YEARS!#its not the inhumans being boring or their stories being bad. its marvel exects venting their frustrations out on the characters#instead of being invested in them and caring for them theyre just a means to an end.#if the x-men dont make money theyre gonna get thrown out too. one day theyll shit all over the avengers#none of this MATTERS to them. its not the inhumans' fault#theyve been around since the 60s. they arent MEANT to be mutant replacements. thats a RECENT thing. bc disney didnt own the mutants.#stop blaming all of this on x-men vs inhumans!! its not the fictional characters faults!!!!!#and one day they'll reboot the inhumans and NONE of the recent stuff will apply bc it wont matter to them. none of the development matters#maximus will br a villain again and medusa and black bolt will be happily married and it'll be like the past 15 years didnt happen#bc thats how comics and people wanting to make money ARE.#this process repeats itself over and over again with all characters. its not THEIR fault.#theyre just made up names and shapes designed for capitalism#inhumans#royal family#undescribed

Why teh hatred for Inhumans? Just curious. :P Didn't they inspire the X-men?
no, they didn't. the x-men were actually around before the inhumans were created, and as far as i know, there was no real link between the two… but the fact that i completely understand where you could get that idea kinda perfectly sums up the issue with them later on lol
so basically, back in the mid-2010s when the mcu was in full swing, marvel reeeeally wanted to capitalize on one of their biggest franchises--the x-men--but couldn't because the film rights for them still belonged to fox... so they decided to try to get around this by pushing the inhumans, whose concept of "humans with genetic powers" is on its surface similar enough to mutants, in their place
the issue with this was/is that if you look even a little past the surface, the inhumans are quite possibly the worst possible group to try to turn into x-men 2 because where x-men stories deal heavily with themes of discrimination & oppressed groups, the inhumans are much more about… eugenics. like… just straight up eugenics
to shamelessly copy & paste from a couple screenrant articles about the failure of the inhumans show (and also just… inhumans concept in general) rather than bother to type out an explanation myself:
The Inhumans' Slave Class Makes The Heroes Impossible To Root For:
The real root of the difficulty that fans have connecting to Black Bolt and Medusa's mismatched clan isn't in their powers or their struggles; it's tied to their very origin story itself. Black Bolt and Medusa are descended from a lineage with its roots in eugenics or forced breeding to ensure that desirable traits become more common. It's a topical discussion with roots in our world like other Marvel properties, but it also ties into some of the darkest corners of human history. Eugenics is a widely disavowed practice and difficult for many to discuss with roots in the Nazi party. The Inhumans began as a race of homo sapiens who were experimented on by the alien Kree. When the Kree learned via a genetic prophecy that they'd be overthrown by one of their unwilling soldiers they stopped the experiments altogether. Cast out, their experiments dubbed themselves the "Inhumans" and formed their own society with its own rules and laws. These laws include the caste system which was seen in the show, as well as the system which keeps Inhumans without superpowers in a slave class called the "Alpha Primitives."
Agents of SHIELD Proved Inhumans Don't Work - By Turning Them Into Mutants:
It's easy to forget that even Marvel's best writers and artists were people of their times. In the case of the Inhumans, Stan Lee and Jack Kirby were directly influenced by the now-discredited science of eugenics, which was much more common back in the 1960s. This led them to create the Inhumans as a superhuman caste-based society, that appears to have had three tiers: - The Inhuman Royal Family sit at the top of this caste pyramid, holding the position by virtue of inheritance. - Then there are the general Inhumans, who - importantly - are never shown working. - The lowest caste are the Alpha Primitives, a slave-race who have been genetically engineered to have low levels of intelligence and only the most basic skills; they perform all the work. It's immediately easy to see why these tropes and concepts are, to put it mildly, problematic. According to the comics, the caste-based society has been forced upon the Inhumans because of limited resources, but that's really only a justification. It also brings with it disturbing questions of whether the secretive Genetic Council control breeding in the lower castes, given there aren't many resources to go around. This, sadly, is probably a major reason Inhumans series historically haven't tended to last long. One of the better runs launched in 1975, by Doug Moench and George Perez, and it lasted just 12 issues; another definitive run by Paul Jenkins and Jae Lee launched in 1998 and fared no better. The core concept just doesn't resonate.
ymmv on whether or not they have any appeal or staying power as a concept, but the issue here isn't whether or not their premise is busted. the problem & reason why i and most people who hate them hate them came from how marvel decided to go about replacing mutants with inhumans in the comics, which was via a FAMOUSLY terrible event that had the inhumans--and there really is no other way to explain it--just straight up commiting genocide
the inhumans flooded the earth with the "terrigen mist" that simultaneously activated the latent powers of people with inhuman genes who came into contact with it AND fucking killed or sterilized people with x-genes. and as if that wasn't enough, for some godforsaken reason, it was the mutants who were painted as villains in this scenario for trying to stop them, not the inhumans for doing it in the first place
as i'm sure you can imagine, a storyline that had a group whose core premise is Literally Eugenics killing & forcibly sterilizing arguably the most famous fictional allegory for oppression...ever went over about as well as a lead balloon
i really can't stress enough how much i am NOT exaggerating here. i know this might sound like typical "tumblr blowing fictional thing WAY out of proportion," and like. yeah, sure, but really, this shit was SO crazy that no matter where you looked, most people were saying versions of the same thing
to this day, it's still probably the most bizarre thing i've ever witnessed on the Comic Book Internet. marvel fucked up so bad that they somehow managed to momentarily dissolve boundaries & bring like every type of person together in united hatred of this bullshit. weirdly beautiful, in its own, incredibly annoying way
i can't even begin to get into the specifics of all the bullshit that happened during this era. if you want a summary, these three posts made as all of this was happening lay it all out pretty well. there's also this more recent resetera thread & this reddit post (one of many, but this one has my favorite comments of any i've seen) discussing it, both full of lots of good salt
like the vast majority of people, i had zero opinion on the inhumans before marvel used them to throw this little film rights hissy fit, but i came out of it fully a hater. this shit was so busted, it made me lose interest in marvel altogether, and i've only within the past year or so started to pick it back up
from everything i've seen, fans of the inhumans were just as annoyed by this as x-men fans, and i've heard the few inhumans series that exist and put a much more critical lens on their concept are actually pretty good. i can definitely see the potential in a fucked up concept like this, but the specific version of inhumans presented in this era?? genuinely some of the worst shit marvel has ever published
my hatred is undying and just completely irrational at this point. i won't be satisfied until every character that was pointlessly inhuman-ed to their detriment has been put back the way they were & all traces of this dogshit era have been well and truly erased from history

Something in the Night ~ Chapter Thirteen
Summary: Following the Battle of the Five Armies, a seriously wounded Thorin Oakenshield returns to Erebor to recuperate and eventually ascend the throne as king. With the deaths of Azog the Defiler and his son, Bolg, Thorin no longer has to worry about the bounty the Defiler placed on his head and can instead concentrate on restoring Erebor to its former glory.
Nina Carren of Esgaroth has one goal—to make Thorin Oakenshield pay for unleashing Smaug the dragon unto her home—where he destroyed the town and killed her family. The Defiler might be gone, but his bounty remains very much in place, and she fully intends to collect on it.
Finally, the opportunity shows itself for her to do just that, only to have it go horribly awry. Wounded and now at his mercy, neither Nina nor Thorin stopped to think what might happen, should things not go quite according to plan…

They departed Mirkwood less than an hour later, and followed along the Forest River. In the distance, the Lonely Mountain rose pink and purple in the late morning sunlight and she gazed upon it, Nina couldn't help but feel a hint of urgency. They would be arriving within a day or so, and that meant she had to do what she set out to do soon.
But, as she sat astride her pony, watching Thorin astride his ahead of her, the sunlight dancing along his long black curls, glinting off the silver clip at the back of his head, she realized she no longer hated him. Perhaps she’d never hated him, but only hated what had happened. Although he had unleashed Smaug, it was never with the intent of setting him upon Esgaroth.
Instead, as she watched him, she found she wanted to know more about him. Last evening, in the low light, she’d seen the thin white scar running diagonally from his right temple toward the inside of his eyebrow and found herself wondering where he’d gotten it. The same with the various other scars she’d seen on his body—what looked like bite marks across his back and chest, and two curious wounds lower on his abdomen amongst others. She wanted to ask him about Esgaroth and the restoration of her hometown, about his childhood and what led him to his quest for Erebor.
More than anything, she wanted another night with him. She no longer cared about revenge, no longer cared about the bounty. Neither one mattered. Not only would they not give her back what had been stolen from her, but she found for the first time in a long time, she looked to the future.
Looked to the possibility of a future with Thorin.
Dwarves do not take this lightly, Nina. It’s not in our makeup to leap from bed to bed, you know.
Did that mean he thought there was the possibility of a future with her as well?
The trouble was, she had to be honest with him. Absolutely honest.
And that terrified her. She had no idea how to tell him, no idea how he would take learning such a thing. It might be an unforgivable matter as far as he was concerned and she wouldn’t be able to fault him if it was.
They were just beyond the easternmost border of Mirkwood, with the River Running in their sights when the first arrow split the air with a sharp whistle. Without thinking, Nina leapt from her mount and as the pony bolted, she yanked her bow and an arrow from her quiver and readied to return fire.
Both Thorin and Dwalin had their weapons at the ready when the first orcs appeared from the trees and all three turned to face them as more arrows sliced their way.
As if to remind her about the damage an arrow could do, Nina’s shoulder throbbed for the first time since the wound had been inflicted upon it, and she fought to ignore it as orcs seemingly poured from the trees, swords drawn, arrows resting and ready to be fired.
“There’s too many of them!” Dwalin’s roar was only barely audible above the sounds as he swung his axe to cleave an orc in half.
“Retreat back into Mirkwood!” Thorin shouted back before being accosted by two orcs.
Nina raced to close the space between her and Thorin and as she neared, he hollered, “Get down!”
Without thinking, she did as he ordered, and a moment later, sticky black orc blood splattered across her face and upper body, while the head Thorin had just removed from its shoulders hit her squarely in hers.
As he moved, another orc came up behind him and Nina fit an arrow between his eyes for his trouble. Thorin grabbed her arm. “Mirkwood, now!”
Before last night, she could have just let her bow fall, grabbed her sword, and dispatched him right then and there. No one would have been any wiser. Dwalin was fifty yards ahead of them, clearing a path back to Mirkwood. Orcs wouldn’t care. They would still try to cut her down regardless as they might even be seeking the bounty on Thorin’s head amongst themselves.
But everything was different now. And so, her sword remained in its sheath and she jerked free from him, spinning around to fire another arrow as she yelled, “Go! I’ll catch up with you!”
Two more orcs descended upon them and Nina couldn’t hold back her yelp as the tip of a blade sliced cleanly across the front of her right leg. Her leg buckled. She went to one knee, grabbing the cut with one hand. Her stomach clenched as blood oozed from the wound, soaking into her trousers.
A shadow fell over her and without thinking, she let the bow hit the ground and held the arrow she’d been readying to fire straight up. Thanks to the power of his own momentum, the orc impaled himself on it and with a low oath, slid down it to slump against her.
Between the fiery hot pain in her leg and the stomach-churning rancid stink of the orc, Nina gagged. Thankfully, Thorin tugged her from beneath the putrid body and as she let go of the arrow, the orc sank into the earth where she had been.
“Thank y—oh!” The breath rushed from her body as Thorin swept her up and basically threw her across his shoulders, then took off at a run. With each pounding footfall, fire tore through her. Hot tears stung her eyes. Her belly churned like mad, even worse than it had when the orc collapsed on her. This pain was just as hot as the one that followed being struck by an arrow. Just hot, and almost as strong, and it was only through sheer will that she kept her head clear and her eyes open.
A horn sounded and when she lifted her head to look, Nina saw the Mirkwood elves, led by Tauriel, come thundering out of the woods. As they crossed back into the woodland realm, Thorin slowed down and Nina managed to grit, “I think I can walk.”
Somewhat out of breath, Thorin set her gingerly on her feet and the moment her right foot touched earth, the muscle in her upper thigh shrieked in protest and a hot sting scalded its way from her hip to her knee, which buckled once more.
Fortunately, Thorin caught her before she hit the ground, easing his arm about her waist. “Lean against me.”
“Thorin!” Dwalin hurried toward them. “Are ye injured?”
He shook his head. “I’m fine. Nina was not so lucky.”
Although she expected it, Dwalin’s look of concern faded. “She looks fine to me.”
“Looks fine?” Thorin replied dryly. “She’s leaving a blood trail.”
She thought he was being sarcastic but when she looked down, she saw she was doing just that. In her wake, she’d left a trail of blood droplets as if she thought she’d need them to find her way out. That made her dizzy and she sagged against Thorin, muttered, “I don’t feel so good…”
“We’re almost there,” he told her. “Can you make it?”
Bells clanged about inside her head, her thoughts sluggish and thick and slow. Words refused to form, so she shook her head and gave into the need to close her eyes.
Her belly whooshed as he easily swung her into his arms once more. “Hold on to me.”
She managed to drape her arms about his neck, rested her head against his shoulder, and once more let her eyes close. “Where are we going?”
“Grainne is the Mirkwood healer. That’s where we’re going.”
“Another elven healer?”
“Before much longer, you’ll be an expert on them.”
“Wonderful.”
A low rumble shook her and she forced her heavy-lidded eyes open as she said, “Are you laughing at me?”
“No. Not at you. At your tone.”
“I’m glad I amuse you.”
The throb in her leg ebbed and flowed with her heartbeat and she fought to ignore it as he brought her down past the throne room, into the depths of Mirkwood, and an unfamiliar voice said, “What have we here?”
“I found myself the path of a sword,” Nina said, sucking in a sharp breath as Thorin set her down on the high, narrow bed in the infirmary.
Like every other elf Nina had ever seen, Grainne was tall and slim and stunning, with high cheekbones, almond-shaped blue eyes, and long, sleek hair the color of honey, pulled away from her face. She did not smile as she looked from her to Thorin. “You’ll have to leave now.”
Nina bit down on her bottom lip, both from the wave of pain that swept through her and the blush once more more deepening against Thorin’s skin. He cleared his throat. “Of course. I need to speak with Thranduíl as it is anyway.”
“I’ll be fine,” Nina told him, managing to hold back her grin. “Just don’t leave without me.”
“Of course not.”
The healer waited for Thorin to leave, then helped Nina carefully strip off her trousers. Her stomach clenched sharply at the ugly wound. Most blade cuts were clean, but the blade that hit her was not finely honed, but almost serrated, judging by the jagged edges it left behind. She gritted her teeth, holding back her cry as Grainne carefully cleaned every last bit of debris from the wound, flushed it to be certain, and then just as carefully stitched the edges together.
A cold sweat prickled down along her spine, between her breasts, and her fingernails left half-moon imprints in her palms when Nina finally relaxed and unclenched her fists. Grainne offered up a sympathetic smile. “I am sorry to have hurt you, Miss Nina, but I must tell you, you are far more stoic than any elf I’ve ever had to sew before. They howl like demons.”
Swallowing hard against the hint of nausea rising in her throat, Nina managed a slight smile back. “Thank you. I think.”
“Keep the wound dry if at all possible and keep an eye out for any sign of infection. Redness, swelling, weeping, red streaks, that sort of thing. If you see any of those, some and see me at once.”
“I will.” Nina gingerly slid into her trousers and winced as she put weight on her injured leg. “How long will it be sore for?”
“A few days at least. It should resolve a bit more each day. Just baby it as much as possible.”
“I will.”
“I’m sure my lord Thranduíl will allow you to remain here a few days longer.”
“We shall see. If not, I’ll be limping my way to Erebor with the others.” Nina offered this over her shoulder as she moved to the door. “But I do thank you for your efforts.”
“Of course.”
Nina limped her way out of the infirmary to find Thorin pacing in the walkway just beyond. “Why are you still here?”
He jumped, whipping about to face her. “Are you supposed to be up and walking on that leg?”
“I’m supposed to favor it, but otherwise, it’s fine.” She limped over to him, surprised to see the relief spread across his face. “Were you worried about me?”
“Not so much worried, no.” He shook his head. “Just a bit concerned, is all.”
She offered up a long look, resisting the urge to chuckle. “That’s worry, Thorin.”
For a moment, she thought he was about to argue it, but then, he smiled. “Very well. You have me there, Nina. Yes, I was worried. Orc blades can inflict far worse injuries than ordinary blades if one is not careful.”
“Grainne cleaned it out, trust me. I can still feel it and it isn’t a pleasant thing at all.”
“Here, allow me to help you, then.”
Before she could protest, he eased an arm about her waist, and walked her toward the woven vine staircase. “Can you manage the stairs?”
“I think so.” She looked up, swallowing hard at how steep that staircase appeared. How had he carried her down them with seemingly no effort? She knew dwarves were strong, but those steps would have tried the strongest of legs.
“I can carry you.”
“That won’t be necessary.”
He stopped and turned to her. “I don’t mind, you know.”
“I’m sure you don’t. But, you carried me down, you needn’t carry me up as well.”
He smiled. “You weigh practically nothing, Nina. It was not difficult.”
“Even so.”
“You said you’re to favor it.”
“I know, but I’ll be fine.” She carefully stepped back and caught the banister with one hand.
But as she tried to take the step, a hot burst of pain exploded within her thigh and she stumbled back as she sucked in a hard breath.
He caught her before she could fall, and easily swung her up into his arms once more. “Let me help you.”
She didn't argue, but nodded and reached down to gingerly rub over the bandage on her thigh. “Thank you.”
As easily as he’d carried her down, he carried her back up and on the main level, when he set her carefully on her feet, he said, “See? Hardly an issue.”
“I know, but—“ She looked up. “I’m supposed to be helping you, not the other way around.”
“You were injured once more in my defense.”
“I need to learn to move more quickly.”
“You do not.”
She glanced down at his huge hands still resting on her hips, then looked back up at him. “You can let go of me now, Thorin.”
“I can, of course. But I’d really rather not,” he murmured. “Unless, of course, you wish me to.”
Nina gazed up at him, and although her heart was heavy with what she knew she had to confess, she wasn't quite ready to ruin things just yet. Warmth sank into her from his hands, and his eyes grew soft as they held her. Her heart sped up at the way his blue eyes darkened to almost sapphire.
Without looking away, she shook her head. “You don’t have to just yet.”
“Good.”
He bent to her, their lips meeting in a kiss so gentle, she forgot about her pain for a moment. Although she wasn’t an expert at kissing by any means, Thorin knew what he was doing. He might have claimed to have as little experience as she did, but she wasn't at all certain she believed him. His lips moved so softly against hers, that his kiss was truly a caress, and when those lips parted…
She shivered.
He drew back, a hint of a smile playing at his lips, and he pressed his forehead to hers, whispering, “We should get you back to your chambers.”
“I think that would be wise.”
“Thorin?”
He drew back and turned. “What is it, Dwalin?”
“I beg yer pardon, of course. But Thranduíl would like a word with ye.”
He nodded. I’ll be there in a moment. I said I would help Nina back to her chambers.”
Over Thorin’s shoulder, Nina saw Dwalin glare at his king’s back, and so she carefully pulled out of Thorin’s arms. “You should go. I’ll manage on my own.”
“Are you certain?”
“I am. Do not keep our host waiting. It’s rude.”
“He had me thrown into a dungeon cell,” Thorin replied even as he stepped away from her. “Making him wait a few minutes more is hardly comparable.”
“Even so, you should go.”
“Very well. And you go rest. I promise,” he offered up a smile, “we will not leave without you.”
“I know.” She limped away from him. “Go and see what His Highness wants. I’m going to lie down.”
“I will see you in a bit.”
“Of course.”
With that, he turned and strode off with Dwalin, while she sank against the railing. Her leg throbbed now, and all she wanted was to go and lie down, so she slowly limped back down to her chambers.
“What are ye about, Thorin?”
“Nothing you need concern yourself with,” Thorin growled as he and Dwalin made their way toward the throne room.
“Dinna be a fool where she is concerned. A pretty face is not worth losing yer life for.”
“Losing my life?” Thorin couldn't hold back his laugh. “That’s a bit dramatic, don't you think?”
“Ye know nothing about her. Nothing at all. And didn't ye just tell me this morning that ye complicated matters that needed no complicating?”
“I did, but…” Thorin looked over at him, shaking his head. “I cannot possibly put it into words and explain it. There is… she is… I…”
“Well, that certainly clears matters up.”
“I know, I sound like I’ve gone mad again, but I haven’t. It’s simply… I have never felt this before. And I don’t even know what it is, but I like it. I don't want it to fade, but there’s something…”
“Something?”
He nodded. “Something. And don’t ask me what, because I cannot possibly answer it. But know this, you needn’t worry. She poses no threat, Dwalin.”
Dwalin looked decidedly ill. “I do not need to hear why ye are so certain of this, ye know. I know what ye were doing, remember. Details are neither necessary nor welcome. But, she is a liability now.”
Thorin peered at Nina’s retreating figure over his shoulder. Her limp was far more pronounced now. “She is good at masking how serious it is. But we really should allow her some time to rest. It isn’t as if we’re on schedule, as we were the last time.”
“Some of us would just like to go home.”
Thorin offered him a long look. “So, go home then.”
“Ye know I’m not about to do that, so it’s fool’s talk.”
Thorin tried to ignore the irritation bubbling in his gut. No, Dwalin was not about to leave him in Mirkwood, no matter how safe it might be now. “It’s only a few days.”
“So ye hope.”
“Yes, so I hope.” He stepped around Dwalin.
“Thorin, let’s let her rest and go on to Erebor without her. We’re almost there and we—”
Thorin threw up a hand. “Stop. Enough. I know you’d don’t care for her, but I am not about to simply dump her off.”
“I don’t care one way or the other for her, yes. But more importantly, I dinna trust her. There’s something about her and don’t ask me what, for I can’t put my finger on it. But something tells me we should get away from her.”
“Something. But you cannot tell me what. You don’t trust her, yet she’s given no reason for us to not trust her.”
“She’s also given no reason for us to trust her.”
“If she meant to do harm to either of us, she’s had ample opportunity and yet, look,” Thorin made a grand sweeping gesture with both hands, “here we are, alive and well and in one whole piece.”
“Thorin—”
“We are finished here, so spare me any further lectures, if you wouldn’t mind.”
“Thorin.”
“I mean it,” Thorin growled, resuming his stride away from Dwalin. “So enough already.”
“It will be enough when ye think with the right head and ye know ye aren’t right now.”
“I said, enough. Now, if you’ll excuse me.”
He didn't wait for Dwalin to reply, but continued on, his gut churning with irritation that was only slightly misplaced. He knew this was not what they needed at the moment, that a romantic entanglement of any kind was only going to cause trouble. And he also knew that Nina was in no condition to continue on with them. Especially with an orc pack between Mirkwood and the Long Lake, as he was certain still some remained.
Although he couldn’t exactly fault Dwalin for his misgivings, he also had no desire to hear about them. Yes, they had only known Nina a short while and yes, it was possible she could cause either of them harm. But, if she could and she planned to, why hadn’t she? She’d had plenty of opportunity to do so. He’d lain asleep beside her for hours, giving her ample opportunity right there.
Yet, she did nothing.
But at the same time, Dwalin was not one to leap to conclusions, either. He thought everything through and did so with the utmost of care. If there something about Nina that troubled him, Thorin knew he would do well to at least entertain the notions.
So why didn't he?
This was one of the very reasons why he tried to avoid romantic entanglements altogether. He had enough to worry about, without also having to contend with the worry that came with opening oneself up entirely to someone else. And he had not lied to her about the importance most dwarves placed upon physical relations. It absolutely was far more meaningful than just the pleasure one felt, as it created a bond between the couple, one that more often than not led to marriage.
Well, he wasn't there yet. Sometimes he wondered if he’d ever be there, if a wife and children were part of Mahal’s plan for him. He didn't know.
But what he did know was that there was something between him and Nina. At least, there were the beginnings of something, or so he thought.
At the entrance to the throne room, Thorin was stopped by an elf page. “My Lord Thranduíl asked that I bring you to the dungeon.”
A hint of apprehension fluttered through him. The last time he saw the eleven dungeon, it was because he’d been shoved into a cell. “Why?”
“An orc was taken prisoner,” the page explained as he gestured for Thorin to follow him and as they made their way along the walkway, he added, “and he told my lord something he thought you might be interested in knowing.”
“Something I might be interested in knowing?”
“Yes, Your Highness. It seems he knows something about the woman with whom you travel.”
Thorin’s gut kinked. “He knows Miss Carren?”
“Not exactly.” The page paused at a closed door, reaching for the handle. He tugged it open and stepped into the room. “My lord, King Thorin.”
“Thank you, Brannion.”
The elf bobbed his head, then took himself off, while Thorin, a sudden apprehension twisting his insides, stepped into the chamber.
Each orc was uglier and more foul than the last and the stench of one announced their presence long before any visual evidence did so. Still, Thorin paid little heed to the smell or the abomination of putrid evil that stared at him now, his movements checked by the gleaming blade Legolas held at the creature’s throat.
“What’s going on?” Thorin asked, looking from the orc to Legolas and then to Thranduíl.
“Tell her, filth,” Legolas said to the orc.
The orc just stared with dead black eyes that looked like river rocks set in their sockets. His grayish, decayed flesh gave his round head a misshapen appearance, like a gourd that had begun to rot and caved in on itself in places.
Thranduíl sighed. “He claims to know your traveling companion. Miss Carren.”
A sour taste flooded Thorin’s mouth and breathing became harder to do. “How is that even possible?”
“Tell him,” Legolas growled through gritted teeth.
The orc flinched as the blade bit into his neck. “The price on your head remained in place,” he finally rasped, those beady eyes locking with Thorin’s. “And she sought to claim it.”
“How do you know?”
“She led us here. My master sent us after her. She would lead us to you, and we would kill the both of you.”
“That means nothing other than you—”
“She came to see him. Wanted half of the price up front, the fool, and my master laughed in her face. Told her to bring him your head and only then would the bounty be paid. She wasn't happy, but she agreed to the terms.”
Thorin felt sick. His stomach churned. His vision swam. But, all he said was, “You lie.”
“Ask her yourself, runt.” The orc let out a low, gurgling laugh. “You let yourself be fooled by her face and now, you will pay—”
A flash of silver and the orc’s body slumped to the floor, leaving Legolas holding a now-lifeless head, which he dropped with no little contempt.
Thorin looked up at Thranduíl. “He’s wrong. She fought alongside us against them. I know not where his information comes from, but he is wrong.”
“You should speak with Miss Carren. And let me know if you wish me to banish her.”
“You’ll do no such thing,” Thorin growled. “Excuse me.”
He waited for no response, but spun about and stormed from the dungeon. The orc had to be lying. Because if not…
He didn't want to think about it.

Earth X #X
What the hell does #X mean??
Well, it means the end. The end of Earth… X. There’s two sequel series after this.
Mar-Vell gets the cover to the last issue. And thank goodness for lens flares because I’m fairly sure he’s very casual Friday.
Earth X. It’s hard to summarize the previous 13 (because #0) issues.
Long story short, the Earth is an egg. All superpowers and mutation are because the Celestials manipulated human evolution to make them guardians of the egg.
The mass mutation of Earth’s population has kicked off 200 years early because Black Bolt set off a terrigen bomb.
A psychic kid called the Skull rose as a Celestial failsafe to control the aggressive and unruly mutated population but Captain America killed him.
So the Celestials landed on Earth to wipe out all life before it threatens the egg but Black Bolt sacrifices himself to shout really loudly into space for Galactus.
Celestials vs Galactus.
Kind of a lose/lose situation for humanity.
The Earth X X issue is double sized. There’s a lot to cover but the subplots have mostly dried up.
Here’s one I’ll get out of the way early.
Reed Richards suddenly remembers that he promised Medusa that he’d help find her missing son.
God. I had completely forgotten about that. It was almost an inciting subplot that got the Inhumans bumping into Reed. But anyway, since Reed got Black Bolt killed, he feels obligated to duck out mid-plot resolution and reunite Medusa and her son.
Tumblr media
Who was the new Black Knight all along.
Cool to wrap that up.
But back to the headlining fight.
According to New Watcher Aaron Stack, Galactus is tougher than one Celestial but might get overwhelmed by a Host of them.
And he keeps tinkering with his Galactus machines instead of punching giant space gods.
Luckily, Galactus gets some backup.
Namor toots as he pleases to summon sea monsters to attack the Celestials in the name of ancient-er Atlantis and for the dinosaurs.
He gets smacked aside.
Silver Surfers Norrin Radd and Shalla-Bal attack the Celestials to buy some time. And Shalla-Bal gets blowed up. Dangit, she’d only just been introduced last issue.
Loki brings an army from Hel, after convincing them that death is fake and that their entire identity was imposed on them.
(That’s why he shanked himself last time.)
They buy some time until the Celestials convince them death is real and they drop dead from it.
And during this, Galactus makes some big moves of his own.
Tumblr media
I can practically HEAR this panel.
Like a static-y reverbish BWOOOOOOOOM!
Anyway, the Celestials eventually decide “fuck this actually” or however space gods would phrase it. They fuck off back into space.
Which just leaves the problem that now Galactus hunters and there’s a tasty planet right here.
Or whoever new Galactus this is.
Reed Richards turned Galactus into a star. The running narration implied that someone else has filled the vacated role.
Which has all to do with the tiers of mutation discussed in the previous issue.
Tier 1 - everyone has different powers. Ex: Earth right now.
Tier 2 - homogenization of powers into shapeshifting. Ex: the Skrulls or Reed Richards
And revealed this issue Tier 3 - completely malleable in body, mind, and will. Incredibly powerful but constrained by how observers identify them. Ex: the Asgardians.
This Galactus has become Galactus because he believes he’s Galactus and is believed to be Galactus.
But originally his name was
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Franklin Richards.
Franklin who has connections to Galactus and has been said to be destined to be the last survivor of this universe the way Galactus was of the previous.
(I don’t know whether all that stuff predates Earth X or was inspired by it. Possible tally marks.)
And Franklin whose name Black Bolt shouted into space, which drew Galactus to Earth to his confusion.
Reed can’t acknowledge Galactus is Franklin, not without leaving the universe without it’s counter to Celestials over-population. But he does suggest that Galactus is known for relocating the populations of the planets he eats. And since Franklactus is influenced by how he is viewed, the universe has a kinder Galactus now.
There’s no planet to relocate Inhumanity to so Galactus just slurps the Celestial embryo right out of Earth and flies off into space with it.
Tumblr media
So the day is saved but damn that’s a sad and lonely existence for Franklin.
He doesn’t even get some Radd company because the Silver Surfer is staying on Earth.
Back on the Moon, Aaron Stack gets tired of Uatu’s blah blah blah.
Tumblr media
He finds where the old Watcher is hiding, since he has only appeared on a screen. He throws Uatu’s prior dismissal of good and evil and says that evil is “to do nothing in the face of need.”
Then he unplugs Uatu from the observation equipment so that on top of being blind, he also can’t hear anything from Earth. A Watcher with nothing to observe.
“He doesn’t have the right to watch. He took my face.”
Aaron really held that grudge.
So now we get into the epilogues and sequel hooks for Universe X.
Now that he knows that the terrigen mist caused the mass mutation of humanity, Reed has some ideas on how to fix it.
But he’s getting some pushback. There are people who want to keep their cool new superpowers. And T’Challa thinks the mass mutation gave the animal spirits of Wakanda anthro bodies and he won’t endorse a plan that could reverse that.
Peter and May have repaired their relationship. May has been helping Peter get back in shape.
Cop Luke Cage is still after Peter to join the police but Peter laughs off the idea of becoming a cop.
The circus guys that became the new X-Men are going to stick around as X-Men.
I cannot fathom why these guys were given so much focus for the minimal impact they had on the plot. I could not tell you what their personalities or even powers are.
I also don’t understand why Circus Daredevil got so much attention.
Earth X still has its mysteries.
After being given some massive foreshadowing that he’d play a role, Mar-Vell finally shows up when the plot is done!
Tumblr media
He assures Reed he’ll be huge in the sequel.
“There’s a lot that’s about to happen, Reed. I’m coming back. I’m coming back to save everyone. And they’re not going to like it.”
????
Reed asks him to clarify but Mar-Vell refuses.
He does find the time to imply he’s going to be born from Perfect Humans Adam Warlock and Her though.
Why? God knows.
Mar-Vell also suggests that the dream he kept giving Bruce was a big brain move to indirectly get Loki aware that the Asgardians are fiction so he’d shank himself, go to Hel, and recruit the inhabitants to help fight the Celestials.
That’s… either very big brain or a complete asspull.
Captain America is still sad he had to murder a child.
Aaron Stack decides he’s going to be the Watchman instead of the Watcher. Sounds like more of an active role and I dunno maybe he likes Alan Moore.
Luna finishes her transformation into a beautiful butterfly lady so she’s ready for her arranged marriage to Black Knight/the Prince. But he has no interest in her.
Oof, that’s rough.
And Reed finishes converting his old vibranium beacon towers into giant devices to siphon and burn the terrigen out of the atmosphere so things can eventually be normal.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He calls them Human Torches because even Reed Richards has his sentimental side.
So that’s Earth X.
I don’t love everything it does but it makes a decent stab at tying everything in Marvel up in a big Celestial-shaped bow. I can appreciate how fleshed out the setting is, how there’s still stuff going on that we don’t know, and how it’s tightly plotted so that a lot of what seems to be random weirdness plays into the resolution.
I like how many prominent heroes go from depressed and beaten down by the past to getting their groove back. Reed Richards, Tony Stark, Peter Parker all start in a bad place and find their heroism again.
The creative team must have been very confident it would succeed since there are SO MANY sequel hooks in the ending.
And it can’t be overstated how much of an impact Earth X had on the rest of Marvel. I tried to call out the times when something from Earth X inspired another Marvel book. And I probably missed a lot because the ideas have become common enough that I didn’t realize they originated here.
But the book never explains what the X in Earth X means so 0 out of 5 stars, bad comic.

365 Marvel Comics Paper Cut-Out SuperHeroes - One Hero, Every Day, All Year…
November 2nd - Medusa
Queen Medusalith Amaquelin-Boltagon grew up on the secluded Inhuman citadel of Attilan.  Like most all Inhumans, Medusalith (or Medusa) was exposed to the mutagenic properties of the Terrigen Mists when she was a young adolescent.  For those with the Inhuman gene, Terrigen acts to unlock super human powers and/or physical alterations.  In Medusa’s case, her crimson hair grew exceptionally long and she was bestowed trichokinesis (a type of telekinesis where she can control the movement of her hair as if it were countless thin appendages growing from her head).  Furthermore, her hair became incredibly durable, with the tensile strength of steel and the lifting capacity of approximately one metric ton.
Lady Medusa fell in love with Black Bolt, the silent prince who was heir to the throne.  The two became bequeathed and Medusa came to be a member of the royal court and Black Bolt’s most trusted advisor and interpreter.
During a coup orchestrated by the prince’s brother, Maximus, Medusa was struck by an experimental ray that rendered her amnesic.  She wandered off from Attilan unaware of who she was nor where she came from and was eventually happened upon by the super villain known as The Wizard.
The Wizard was able to seize upon Medusa’s amnesia and coerced her to be a part of his group of villains, The Frightful Four.  This led to multiple altercations with The Fantastic Four.  Black Bolt eventually sought Medusa out and her memories returned.  Aided by The Fantastic Four, Black Bolt was able to depose Maximus and reattain the throne.  Having enjoyed her time in the world of man, and feeling indebted to The Fantastic Four, Medusa stepped in as a member of the team during a time that The Invisible Woman was taking a sabbatical.  She would have further adventures alongside the Fantastic Four as well as additional adventures as a member of the Inhuman Royal Family.
Medusa and Black Bolt were eventually married and she became queen of Attilan.  Soon thereafter, she became pregnant with her and Black Bolt’s child.  Due to the potentially destructive nature of Black Bolt’s power, the influential Genetic Council of Attilan deemed that a child of the king was too dangerous and they ordered that Medusa terminate her pregnancy.  She refused and ran away from Attilan with her sister, Crystal.  She gave birth to a son, whom she named Ahura, and was relieved to find he did not possess the same destructive powers as his father.
Medusa and Black Bolt reconciled yet continued to struggle in their relationship as the pressures of governing Attilan took its tole on the wellbeing of them both.
Black Bolt was seemingly killed at the climax of the War of Kings event, whereupon Medusa was named Queen and leader of both Attilan as well as the recently conquered Kree Empire.  Black Bolt would eventually return and the two enjoyed a brief period of peace and happiness before the dire circumstances of the oncoming Secret Wars event led to the destruction of Attilan and the release of the Terrigen Clouds.
Once more Medusa was made queen and ruled over New Attilan, tending to the great number of new Inhumans created by the Terrigen Clouds.   It was later discovered that Terrigen is a deadly toxin to Mutants and that the Clouds would eventually make the earth uninhabitable to Mutants.  This led to the X-Men/Inhuman War and Queen Medusa chose to destroy the Terrigen Clouds so to save Mutantkind.  Although she had prevented a genocide, her act had also doomed the future of the Inhumans in that with the Terrigen destroyed no new Inhumans could ever come about.
Following a terrible attack by a rogue faction of The Kree, Medusa and her family relocated to a secretive sanctuary.  Although she did venture out to help celebrate the nuptials of Ben Grimm and Alicia Masters.
Actress Serinda Swan portrayed Medusa in the ABC television series, Marvel’s The Inhumans.  The heroine first appeared in the pages of Fantastic Four Vol. 1 #36 (1964).

*Multiverse of Madness SPOILERS*
Time for me to talk about the Illuminati death scenes, cause this was some bullcrap.
First, Black Bolt: I genuinely feel sorry for fans of the character and the Inhumans. Honestly, I haven't seen the Inhumans show, so I don't know if it's bad or good (even though I've heard from some people who said it was a bad show). I did hear that Anson Mount played the character in the show, and he was fine in MoM. He even got the comic accurate costume, tuning fork and all. Although, I feel bad for the actor since he got to reprise his role only to get killed off in a brutal way for a PG-13 movie. I understand taking Black Bolt out first since he's a major threat to Wanda, but the reason she was able to do that was because Reed had to tell her what his power is, which is so stupid. You don't tell your enemy what they're capable of! Also, I thought he'd be the one that should've held his own against Wanda (the other two should've been Professor X and Captain Marvel) based on his abilities. Dude could level an entire town with a mere word!
Mr. Fantastic: I'm so sorry Fantastic Four fans. Now, because he was in the movie for a couple of minutes, I can't judge how well John Krasinski acted as Reed Richards, but he was fine in the movie. Speaking of Krasinski, this was a fancast made by so many fans for years. Well, we got the fancast we wanted....only for him to turn into string cheese and get his head popped off by Wanda. The effects for his stretching was okay, and the costume was okay, but god damn was Reed done dirty here. His death was the slowest out of the Illuminati, which I don't understand why the hell Peggy and Maria just stood there and not attack Wanda to save Reed! Also, Reed's supposed to be one of the smartest people in Marvel, but he tells Wanda Black Bolt's power, and stretches his arm to grab her when he saw what he did to his teammate. Yeah, Reed in the comics messes up, but come on! Now, if the Fantastic Four movie's still happening and Krasinski isn't casted, that's gonna be a huge insult to fans who wanted to see him play that role.
Captain Carter: Anyone noticed that Wanda easily get rid of the two male members, but struggles to fight against the two female members? I don't know how I feel about that. Anyway, I still don't get why Peggy is a member of the Illuminati, but okay. And she has a jetpack for some reason. Did it suck that she died? Yeah, it was a bummer. But, I'm surprised that Wanda had a longer fight with her than Black Bolt and Mr. Fantastic, and that she struggled against Peggy and Maria more than the others. Also, "I can do this all day"....seriously?! She had to have Steve's catchphrase?!
Captain Marvel: So, she's one of the three that should've held her own and she did. But, her death was a giant statue falling on top of her? I wanted to call bullcrap on that cause Carol has flown through space ships, and this Maria variant dies from a statue. Maybe it was because Wanda absorbed her powers, but it was hard to tell. If she did do that however, why the hell doesn't she do that to everyone else?! Also, Maria's attitude rubbed me the wrong way, but I think the writers made her and the others arrogant so that they'd easily get killed by Wanda. It's still annoying though.
Now, there's still Charles Xavier but that's gonna be a long post for later. And, I know some people are gonna say "they're variants, it's fine". No. No, it's not fine. This was the first introduction to Mr. Fantastic, and Black Bolt in an MCU movie. Them getting brutally murdered shouldn't be part of that. It's insulting to the Fantastic Four fans and the Inhumans fans. This is also Captain Carter's live action debut, and this would piss off some of the Peggy stans too. Too bad Wanda is "dead", otherwise, I'd hope Sue Storm, Medusa, or Franklin Richards would've hunted her down and kicked her butt for killing their loved ones. I pick them because of how close they are to them. Anyone else who's capable of beating up the witch is fine by me if they join in.

Note
This movie, actually the MCU as a whole, has this annoying habit of taking normally overpowered characters, and making them useless jobbers (IE, someone who is there only to lose a fight.)
Black Bolt's voice alone is so powerful, that he has to whisper into his wife Medusa's ear so she can speak for him without destroying and entire city block. There's literally an episode of Avengers Assemble where Ultron tries to use him a weapon of destruction, torturing him so his scream of pain would destroy New York. In MoM, he's effectively useless.
Also that weird, one eyed squid thing in all of the trailers, and yet only appears for like one scene? That's supposedly Shuma Gorath, one of the most powerful things in all of Marvel. Legitimately, the only things more powerful than him are Galactus, the Infinity Gauntlet and the Phoenix Force. Seriously whenever he appears, everyone, Dr Strange, The Avengers, The Fantastic Four, hell I think even the X-Men, HAS to fight him. And in MoM, he's a generic monster that Wanda summons for a singular scene and that's it. HE SHOULD'VE BEEN THE MAIN VILLAIN! Maybe he's responsible for the Dark Holds corruption of Wanda, and is using her for his own gain, emotionally manipulating her and making false promises to bring back her, non existent, kids and even Vision and Pietro.
Oh wait, that requires NOT turning a sympathetic, if underdeveloped character, and making them more of an evil bitch then most of the other villains in this damn franchise.
The more I learn about Black Bolt, the more I think MCU really just wanted a cameo only, but didn't care for the damn writing. Like, from what I gather, dude could have fucking taken out the whole Illuminati building, let alone Wanda. But nah, just.....have him a, be without Medusa which is stupid as how the fuck does he do anything without her and b, have Mr. Fantastic reveal what Black Bolt can do just so Wanda can go, "What Mouth?" and....yeah, Black Bolt's powers explode in his brain as a result. Can't let Wanda have a hard fight, you know. What you expecting, a super villain to actually struggle against the supposed to be smartest people of the multiverse?
MCU???? Developing their characters in Phase Four???? Nah, they just get whatever writing the writers feel like doing or feel like doing without thinking. But in Wanda's case, it was they wanted to do House of M for some reason in a Strange movie but just made Wanda pure villain mode with wanting to torture and kill a literal child while casually killing anyone in her way, and even acting like her and Strange are similar when Strange broke the rules to help people, while she's doing it to kill people. And in Shuma Gorath's case....not surprising the MCU depowered him in favor of random minion of Wanda who gets killed through eye being popped and that's it. They hyped him for the trailers and just like Disney Descendants 3 hyping up the Knight Fight in trailers....it was just a random scene and he's never brought up again, meaning he can now join not only depowered characters but also the list of villains ruined by the MCU, this time in favor of a over powered Wanda cause....House of M or some bullshit.

The whining over Kamala being a mutant in the MCU is ridiculous and more based in a near 20 year old beef between the fans of the X-Men and the non-X properties in the comics. The later are feeling insecure since the comics side has a bit of a complex about MCU related properties these days
as for the Inhumans, I like them, but up until like a single comics issue before the big Inhumanity push started; they were deliberately portrayed as being a shitty society; one where even where a 'good monarch' (allow for the usual superhero monarchy is good logic etc) with Black Bolt's personal power or Medusa's connections is unable to make more than superficial changes. all of their good stories was based around the fact that their society is stagnant and failing and screws over every level of society even as they cling to it
making them knockoff mutants out of the blue did no one any favors
so long as the comics version of Kamala doesn't get turned into Xavier Institute/Krakoan wallpaper in the comics once she becomes a mutant its not really a big deal

After the Fire ~ Chapter Twelve
Title: After the Fire -
Fandom: The Hobbit - Post BOTFA AU Where Everybody Lives
Summary: Following the Battle of the Five Armies, a grievously wounded Thorin is brought back to the kingdom of Erebor, which is still mostly in ruins. Although he’s survived the wounds he received at the end of Azog’s blade, his recovery is far from complete. Grief, regret, anger, all are making his journey that much more difficult and the physical recovery isn’t quite the most difficult challenge he faces.
Jasna Stoneham is no stranger to loss, as she is a survivor of Smaug’s wrath upon Esgaroth. When she is asked to help the dwarves healers of Erebor, her instinct is to say no, but she needs the job, and so agrees to it. However, no one told her that of all the patients, she would be responsible for the king himself, Thorin Oakenshield.
Unfortunately, the road to recovery isn’t necessary a smooth one, but if there’s one thing Thorin will learn, it’s that Jasna is just as stubborn as he is and for every step back he takes, she is there to push him three steps forward. And Jasna will soon find out that there is a gentle, softer side to the dwarf king, one that very few people have ever seen and one he fights to keep hidden from her as well. But like his recovery, that is also easier said than done.
Jasna comforts Thorin when nightmares plague his sleep…

“Azog… I must find—I will find that filth… And Kíli… oh Mahal, no…”
The moan roused Jasna from her slumber, low at first, but rising in pitch. She sat up, rubbing sleep form her eyes, trying to ascertain if she heard what she heard or if she was but imagining it.
“Kasamhili nê! Ahhh.. Afsêl mê…”
She recognized the voice, if not the words, and jammed her feet into her slippers, then grabbed her wrapper, dragging it on as she bolted from her room and out into the infirmary. By now, she knew it well enough that she found her way to Thorin’s bed without even needing a torch.
He thrashed about, tangled in the sheets. “Kasamhili nê! Ahhh.. Afsêl mê…”
“Thorin?” She caught him by the shoulder. “Wake up, Your Majesty… you’re dreaming again.”
A sob caught in his throat, his voice broke as he moaned, “Azog… where is he? I must find—I will find that filth… And Kíli… oh Mahal, no…”
“Shhh…” She tried to calm him, tried to quiet him. “It’s all right, Your Majesty… you’re safe. Kíli and Fíli are safe. Please, open your—oh!”
He grabbed her, but unlike the last time when he’d come up swinging, this time, he clung to her, crushed her against his chest, his arms tight about her. He trembled from whatever specter haunted his dreams, and whispered, “Where is he…?” into her neck.
“Shhh….” She eased her arms about him, stroking his hair, the way her mother used to do to her when she was a little girl and nightmares plagued her sleep. She rocked him as best she could, whispering, “You’re safe now, Thorin. I promise you, you’re safe. Your nephews are as well, safe and sound and sleeping peacefully. Shhh…”
Little by little, he calmed, although he still shook against her. “It was so real,” he whispered brokenly, his face still buried in her neck. “Oh, Mahal, it was so real…”
“It’s not,” she murmured, her fingers moving slowly along his tangled black waves. “It’s only your mind playing tricks on you. I promise.”
He pulled away then, and in the light of the few torches that remained lit throughout the night, she could see his eyes glimmering the way his sister’s did earlier. Without thinking, she curved a hand against his cheek, his beard coarse against her palm. “It wasn’t real, Thorin. If you wish, I will walk you over to them and you can see f-for yourself.”
“No… no, that won’t be necess—” he paused, pressing his lips together, and then he said, “Actually, please.”
“Of course.” She carefully untangled herself from him and stepped back to reach for the cane propped against his beside table.
He took it, then carefully, and with her offering support, rose. He was still a bit unsteady, leaning on her more than he had that afternoon, but they made it over to Fíli and Kíli’s beds. Dís remained in her chair, her head resting on Kíli’s bed, sound asleep.
“See?” Jasna whispered, giving Thorin’s thick arm a gentle squeeze. “They are both fine.”
“It was so real,” he whispered back, shaking his head. “So very real.” A heavy sigh rose to his lips. “Mahal, I wish it would stop.”
“The d-d-dreams?”
“Aye. I wish only to sleep soundly.”
“You will.”
“I am not so certain.” He turned to her, shaking his head. “I cannot recall the last time I slept peacefully.”
She smiled up at him. “You will. You’ll see.”
“I wish I could be so certain.”
“The nightmares will fade in time. It’s only been a fortnight, Your Majesty.”
“I thought we agreed you would call me Thorin?” He loomed over her in the semi-darkness.
“Oh, I—I couldn’t.”
He nodded. “You can. I believe I’ve told you so more than once. Do I need to beg?”
“Your Majesty, I—”
He cut her off then, bent to her, and captured her lips with his. She froze against him at first, the softness of those lips unexpectedly wonderful. His beard prickled gently against her skin, but she didn't mind one bit. His kiss set loose a flurry of butterflies deep within her belly, set her blood racing hot and steaming through her veins, and when his hands came up to cradle her face between them, she almost sighed right into his mouth.
Yes, he’d parted his lips, and her eyes snapped open at the soft but instant pressure of his tongue against her lips. Curious, she let hers part, and her toes actually curled at the silken caress of his tongue as it glided softly along hers. Her breath hitched. Her heart skipped a beat. Her eyelids grew so heavy, she had no choice but to let them close once more.
She didn't really know what to do. She and Anissa had only ever talked about this sort of kissing once and they both declared the very thought of a man’s tongue in their mouths as utterly revolting. But the truth was, there was nothing revolting about it at all. It felt wicked, but in such a delicious way, and her instinct was to return his caress in kind.
So she did. And smiled at how his breath hitched, at how he trembled against her once more, only this time, nightmares had nothing to do with it. He tilted her face up slightly, his tongue delving deeper, teased hers, tangled with it, drew it back into his mouth to tease there. His thick fingers stretched up almost into her hair, which fell about her face in its tangle of unbound curls. His thumbs swept along her cheeks.
He slowly drew away from her, his voice light and breathless as he whispered, “Jasna…” and nuzzled her.
Her head lolled to the left of its own accord as he swept his lips along the side of her neck. She felt dizzy, her head spinning wildly as the room seemed to grow warmer. Heat filled her, urged her to slip her arms about his waist, to press herself flat against him. She wanted to slip her hands beneath his loose blue tunic, to feel his skin bare against hers, to feel his arms tighten about her.
He must have shifted, for the cane hit the floor and the thunk reverberated about the room. She jumped back as Dís stirred, sitting up and rubbing one eye as she murmured, “Thorin?”
“Go back to sleep, Dís,” he whispered back, his voice still a bit smoky about its edges. “I was but checking on the boys.”
“Why?” She sat up straighter. “Is something wrong?”
Her eyes fell on Jasna, who was ever more aware of her lack of dress. She tugged her wrapper tighter about herself, and self-consciously tucked a curl behind one ear as she said, “No, my lady. Everything is f-f-f-fine.”
“I was just… I had to check on them,” Thorin broke in softly.
“And now, you should go back to sleep, Your Majesty.” Jasna crouched to snatch up his cane, pressing it into his hand as she added, “I am t-t-terribly sorry w-w-we woke you, my lady.”
“There is no need to apologize,” she whispered back, shooting her brother a pointed look. “I understand.”
Thorin looked from her to Jasna and back. “There is no need to see me back to bed, Miss Stoneham. I can manage. I apologize for waking you as well.”
“It’s all r-r-right,” she told him. “It’s w-w-w-why I’m h-h-h-here.”
“Please. I’m going to sit up with Dís a little longer. Go back and get some sleep. Your day starts far earlier than mine will.”
“Are y-y-you c-c-certain?”
He nodded. “I am. Good night, Miss Stoneham.”
“Very well.” She bid them both good night and turned to go back to her room, trying to ignore the sense of disappointment swelling within her. The last thing she’d expected was for him to kiss her, and now that he had, he’d awakened something far more powerful than basic curiosity. That one kiss was enough to spark an even greater curiosity, one that had her looking at Thorin in a way she hadn’t before, and as she slipped back beneath the covers, sleep simply refused to come to her.
“What were you doing, Thorin?” Dís murmured.
“Nothing you need concern yourself with.”
“Thorin.”
His hand tightened about the cane’s head. “I mean it, Dís. It’s none of your concern at all.”
“She seems very sweet.”
He didn't answer, but instead turned his gaze toward his sleeping nephews. What had possessed him to kiss Jasna? And to do so right there, in the middle of the infirmary, where anyone who happened to be awake could see it?
It wasn't something he planned to do, but he’d be lying if he said it wasn’t on his mind from the moment he’d stepped up to her in the courtyard that afternoon. Actually, if he was being totally honest with himself—and that was something he didn’t necessarily do all that well—it was something he’d been thinking about for several days.
He’d found he looked forward to seeing Jasna, during rounds, when she just passed through, or even if she was caring for someone else. It seemed that when he saw her, his heartbeat sped up, and when she came near, his mouth went strangely dry. And when he’d managed to untangle himself from the grips of the same nightmare that plagued him since Ravenhill, her arms about him were enough to quell those specters and calm him.
From the corner of his eye, he saw Dís still stared at him, so he turned back to her. “What?”
“There is nothing wrong with liking her, you know.”
“Dís, she is my healer. She’s of Man. She and I—there could never be anything more than that.”
“Why not?”
“You know why.”
She sighed as he turned to stump back to his bed. He’d hoped she’d settle back in her chair and doze off once more, but of course, Dís being Dís, that was not what she was going to do.
No, she followed him, taking the cane to prop against his bedside table once he climbed back into his bed. Then, she smoothed the covers about his hips. “Is it truly an issue, Thorin? After all this time?”
“I think it could be, yes.”
“Thorin,” her hand came to rest on his shoulder, her eyes filled with a concern he’d never seen before, “Miss Stoneham is a lovely girl. If you think there might be something there, you should pursue it. You’re allowed to be happy, you know.”
“Dís,” his irritation drained away as she gave his shoulder a squeeze, “I know you mean well, but this is none of your concern.”
“I don’t even know if she will be coming. I’ve not heard from her since just after you left Ered Luin.”
He settled back against the pillows. “It matters not now. As I said, Miss Stoneham is no more than my healer and I am almost ready to leave here. Look around, there are only a few of us left, so I’d imagine Óin will be letting her go sooner rather than later, and once she leaves, she will not be back.”
“I wouldn’t be too certain of that if I were you,” she told him softly, shaking her head. “Óin considers her one of the best students he’s ever had. The Iron Hill dwarves might not trust her or like her too much, but I doubt the same could be said of us. I know I would not tolerate an unkind word said about her in my presence. Would you?”
“No. I wouldn’t. And I think you know that.”
“I do. So…”
“Mind your own business, Dís.”
“‘Amad?” Kíli’s whisper floated into the air, which had Dís whipping about at once.
“I’m here.” She stepped toward his bed, but looked back over her shoulder at Thorin. “We are not finished with this, Thorin.”
“Yes, we are. This is none of your concern and it will stay that way.”
She made a face at him, which he promptly ignored as he stared across the infirmary at Jasna’s closed door, and found himself wishing the infirmary was empty. If it was, he had no doubt he’d be knocking on that door in a heartbeat. And when Jasna opened it, he’d whisk her into his arms, spirit her to her bed, and would not let her out of it. Quite possibly ever.
But, the infirmary wasn’t empty and he knew the only way he’d be carting her off to bed any night was in his dreams alone.
