"His consciousness is flickering, as if a candle at the end of its life..."
"...It was just a brief moment yet the sight, the sensation dispersed all the discomfort coursing through his whole being."
He could feel it… the strong gust of winds hitting his back. It was burning hot. It was so painful, he wanted to scream so bad. Yet in his current state, he couldn’t do that.
Leviathan is falling. Falling from the sky; from that bright, holy land.
Ahh… It's not the wind… His half-lidded eyes watched the blood-soaked feathers fluttering in the air. It was his wings. As if he were Icarus shedding after straying too far, taking no heed of his father’s words. Realizing his mistake when it was finally too late, when he’s already falling to his demise.
But Leviathan didn’t do anything wrong. The only sin he truly committed is loving his sister. It was bound to end up that way. Whether they are archangels or not, it won’t change the fact that they clashed against their father and consequently, the whole Celestial Realm.
They were outnumbered. Forcibly scattered and ultimately, defeated. They were thrown off the place they once called home.
But right now, being pulled out of his roots is the least of his problems. He is plummeting fast, with his bloody wings crumbling into nothingness. A tattered body who could barely move, with no one to save him at all.
Maybe this is how it will all end. This is as far as he can get.
He didn’t regret fighting with his brothers. Though, not being able to say goodbye is pretty sad.
He could feel it. The end of his eternity. As he closes in the surface, he could sense the tanginess and saltiness of the breeze.
Before his mind could take in why, he hit the surface. Hard. It bashed all the air off his lungs. And then he sunk… deeper, the saltiness stung his eyes; it seeped and burned through his deep, painful wounds. The water rakes in his lungs. He thrash, he flails yet it was all in vain. He’s far too wounded to properly swim. Everything hurts...
Is this... death? Images of his family flashed before his eyes. Of Mammon playing with him as a child, Asmodeus teasing him, twins embracing him, Lucifer patting his head. Of... Lilith, smiling at him.
Where are they right now? Are they in pain as he is?
I hope... they're fine... His consciousness is flickering, as if a candle at the end of its life. Drifting further and further, into the dark blue hue of the abyss he is in. Into the darkness he's never seen before.
And then, he saw it. A silhouette swimming down towards him.
Lilith... No, are you the god of death...? As his eyes shut, his awareness slipping away from him, he felt something.
A soft sensation touching firmly over his lips, nape and back. It was warm, and soft like a flesh—
Leviathan's eyes snapped open, as air rushed from his mouth to his lungs. What he saw was a face extremely close to him. Their noses brushing to each other... Their locks flowing in the water.
It was just a brief moment yet the sight, the sensation dispersed all the discomfort coursing through his whole being.
As they parted, he coughed, remembering the stinging pain from the fall and drowning.
He forgot because of the mysterious person in front of him. Instinctively he took a deep breath and... Huh...?
His orbs almost popped from his skull, staring at the person in front of him, shocked.
"How..." He spoke, which ignited more confusion and bewilderment. How in the world can he breathe underwater? Much more, speak?
"Are you alright?" Instead of answering them, Leviathan observes the person.
Huh?! A—! A MERMAID?! I was just saved by a mermaid?! Mermaids exist?! But— How?? I— Am I actually dead?! Is this the pre-death hallucinations I’m experiencing?! Is that even possi—
The mermaid suddenly laughed, interrupting Leviathan of his thoughts.
"If you can think like that and make all sorts of.. pff— faces, then I guess you're alright." Holding their stomach, they laughed, which made the purple-head blush a little.
...Huh..? Think? What do they mean by—
They cleared their throat, "Oh, I apologize, but I can actually hear your thoughts." They giggled, and in a few moments, Leviathan turned as red as the blood he shed a while ago.
Right… He was beaten and bruised a while ago. But for some reason, nothing’s painful anymore. “Am I dead?”
“What? No, you’re alive and well.”
“But– or is this a dream?”
“And what? I don’t really exist? You’re rude....” they huff, “and it was also rude of you just now. Like, you look more like the god of death than I am.” Leviathan stared at the entity before him as if they just grew another head.
“What?” What are they saying? A pure white angel looks like a death god? “But I’m an archangel. I’ve never seen a death god with a halo—” but when he touched his head, it was not the warm ring he felt, but a cold, branching-like structure, poking on both sides. “What is thi...” Confused, he tried pulling on it, only to jerk from the dull pain. At the same time something hit his nape lightly and when he glanced behind, he saw a black, scaly tail, seemingly belonging to a snake. Tracing it’s sight, it was attached to none other than the small of his back.
“Hey Mister. Are you sure you're an angel, and not a demon? I mean, you felt like one, bu...” all the sound beneath the water disappeared as Leviathan delves in his thoughts
Demon..? Me, a demon? But I am an angel… He tried to flap his wings but instead, it’s the tail that moves and hits his back pretty hard. Ahh, right… I’m a fallen angel, then of course I’ll become a disgusting demon. But a demon?! I’d rather die than became a repulsi—
“HEY! You’re really rude aren’t you? Don’t just ignore your savior as you pleased, seriously.” The mermaid shakes him back to reality.
“Don’t call a demon disgusting just because you were once an angel. Well, they may have caused you all sorts of trouble when you’re still an angel, but not everyone is as bad as you think they are. You haven’t even met every single one of them to conclude that.”
“Why? Have you ever met one to say that?”
“Yep, once.”
“And you’re saying you’re lucky enough to meet a nice one?”
“Yup, though I would say he’s rather rude for someone who's just been saved.” Leviathan stared at them before he understood what they meant.
“I’m not a demon!” Pissed, he roared, scaring all the fishes and sea creatures nearby, and with a force pushing the mermaid a few inches away. Even the man himself was shocked by what he just did.
“Ah– no, I!” He reached out but promptly pulled back, in fear of hurting the one who saved him.
“Hah… What a troublesome fellow... Look here,” they gently placed their hand atop his head, “Do you really think you can hurt me? In my own turf?” and in that moment, the fallen angel couldn’t take his eyes off the mysterious being, as swiftly yet gracefully, they swam around him. It was like a show, like they were dancing to the song of the whales faraway, of chiming clams and whispers of the tide. Their locks swaying like an iridescent jellyfish, orbs glimmering like sparkling gems. Their scales are prismatic, as if the lustrous surface of the ocean when the light and skies were reflected to it. “Breathing and floating doesn’t make you swim faster than me. I’m the fastest swimmer here, you know.” gently, they took him by the hand, swimming to the flow of water without breaking their gaze on him.
“Whether you were once an angel, or a demon right now, don’t you think you’re actually lucky?”
“Yeah, if facing a war with my father, being separated from my siblings, being thrown out of my homeland, becoming a demon and almost dying just a while ago is what you call lucky, then no thanks. I’d rather be unlucky forever.”
“Ohh, what a rough life.” They whistled, “But you're still lucky. You met me, so instead of dying you can now breathe and casually wade underwater, right?”
You consider becoming a demon fish lucky?
“Oi, what’s your problem with fishes, huh? You wanna fight?” they huff as they continued drifting away.
“Right, you can read my thoughts.”
“Just think about it. You lived high above the skies for who knows how long. You got here and can roam the ocean anytime. And if you were to head to Devildom, you can live a normal life there. Oh, even in Human world, seriously… I'd kill for a blessing like that.” They pout.
Leviathan stared at the mermaid in front of him, “...maybe you’re right.” a smile formed in his face yet, the uncertainty in his expression didn’t slip the mermaid’s sharp eyes.
“How about your siblings? Did they fight along with you?” The man casts his eyes away from them.
“...They did.”
They peered sideward, trying to catch his gaze back. “Are they strong?”
His heart thumps rather strongly for a second. “The strongest. They're the best.” And his smile spreads wider.
“They'll make it.” It was as though their words worked wonders, filling his chest of unexplained confidence and ease; purifying his core of its bleakness. His hope, his faith with his siblings, everything that made him feel miserable seems to vanish with the tides.
“Ah, and if they were also banished like you, I’m sure you’ll find them in Devildom.”
“Heh, how certain are you? They could just stay in the human world rather than that repulsive place. You haven't even met them.”
“Well, you have no choice. You’re like newborn demons with unfamiliar, uncontrollable powers. Vulnerable to wizards and witches. But at least, you're former archangels. You possess the potential the Devildom’s Ruler would want as aides. With the right cards, he’ll shelter you and even help search for missing siblings. Let’s make a bet for it!”
The demon sighs before chuckling, “Yeah, you're right. Though you’re betting is a bit rigged. You already know you’ll win.”
“Then, how about we make it so that even if one of your siblings weren't waltzing on the face of Devildom, you win? If I win, give me something special. Otherwise, I’ll give you… hmm… everything I possess.” Leviathan instantly jolted, stopping them from their smooth ride in the waves.
“Wha– Are you insane? You’re offering everything to a complete stranger? You’re worse than a compulsive gambler!”
“Why? It's more fun this way.” A sneer at him with words like that left Leviathan speechless. “So, you in?”
“...No thanks. I already received enough. I don’t need any more from you.”
“Ehh.. really? I wonder about that...” unamused, they pulled him in somewhat of an embrace, his chest placed above their stomach, and continued drifting. “Though, if I may say, comforting a stranger is not an easy task. And you also don’t look like the type who will just let a stranger drag him just anywhere.” That’s the time he finally realized… they’re already far from his dropping point. When they started dragging him, he didn't get a single clue.
But before the demon could even react, the mermaid hoisted him on their chest, flipped him underneath before swimming fast towards the same direction.
In no time, they finally stopped, the confused, woozy Leviathan feeling nauseous from the ride.
“We’re here! Welcome to my place!” They chirped like no one's glaring daggers at them.
Leviathan on the other hand, although glaring, is holding on their shoulder for support. “Seriously! What’s your..” a smile from them shut him up and a glance around their surroundings to make him forget his words.
“Beautiful right?” It was not only beautiful.
He never knew he'd ever see the Celestial Realm underwater.
Lush, vibrant corals in all sorts of shapes and sizes fill the seabed of azure plains. Fishes were sparkling glitters swirling uniformly as if a staff casted a spell. Sea creatures he never knew existed drifting back and forth. The sea plants swaying gracefully on the current. He saw everything, in all shades of colors and hues, like he witnessed a rainbow mixing its own colors. Like a sight taken from the Celestial Realm. And as he glanced back to the mermaid beside him…
It was breathtaking… beyond words…
“Right?” gliding elegantly between the coral reefs, they replied to his unvoiced response. “It took me a great deal to build this. Ahh, look here.” His eyes followed their hands as it brushed a black spiky coral reef with a touch of purple. They then swam back beside him.
“It looks a lot like,” they caressed his horn, sending shivers to his spine and a tint of red blooming on his cheeks, “this. Doesn’t it look like a crown befitting the sea king? I like it.”
“Hey, stop it! Where does that even come from?” He pried their hands off, also to hide his blushing.
“Why? Wouldn’t it be cool if I had one? Also, this.” Leviathan jolted forward as the mermaid held his tail. “Black snake scales are cooler than fish scales. It’s easier to manage too.”
“I said stop it!” He pulled his tail from their grasp. “Geez...” They brushed their fin, ignoring him. “What do you expect? You’re a mermaid. A half-fish, not a half-snake.”
“Ahhh... I wanna have legs like this stranger...” They whine, plopping lazily on the seabed.
“And what are you going to do with my legs? What’s your name anyways? You’ve been acting all chummy. I kept forgetting I don’t even know you.”
“Took you long enough to ask. I’m Y/N, the most beautiful mermaid out there. You?”
“Leviathan. So, is bugging and teasing a lost lamb like me your hobby?”
“Heh, lamb… You’re really rude, aren’t you? I’m just being hospitable to a guest. You’re the first after hundreds of years… or thousands maybe? Well, now that you’ve seen my home, are you interested in my bet now? I can give you everything here.”
“Absolutely. NO! You’re so shady! You’re no different than the folklore of claiming my soul or something if I agree with you! I bet all of this is just an illusion and you’re just luring me to your trap! Everything is too good to be true!”
“Ehh, boring… If I want your soul, I should have just taken it while you’re on your last breath.” they float around him, “I’m just so bored is all.”
“If you’re bored, then play with other mermaids! Don’t make me your toy, geez.”
“...Mermaids, huh...” For a second, Leviathan caught a glimpse of a void within their irises. Whether it was his imagination, he has no way of finding out. “Anyways, I haven’t shown you my baby yet!”
Without even giving him a chance to breathe from all the events happening, they pulled him somewhere, again.
He hoped he stopped the mermaid in time. That way, he shouldn’t be experiencing another life-and-death situation.
“D-d-don’t t-tell me you actually brought me here to f-f-feed me to t-t-this creature?!” Leviathan was trembling as he clutched both of the mermaid’s arms, hiding behind them. Why wouldn’t he? Seven pairs of orbs were staring down at him. Those sharp eyes are impaling through his soul, as if assessing how they would rip him into pieces. It has seven heads, each has protruding fangs that could easily tear him to shreds. Long necks that could squeeze the life out of him. It was a monster. A monster he had never seen before.
“What? No. Lotan is a good boy. right, Lotan? Come here.” Leviathan jumps meters away as the monster lowers one of his seven heads.
“Who’s the good boy, hmm? Lotan is!” He couldn’t even tell whether to be terrified or amazed at this point. He is witnessing an unbelievable sight. A giant sea monster, who could squash someone in a single blow is before him. Yet, it was melting to the touch of a mystic mermaid, as if it were the most docile pet ever.
“Just so you know, Lotan doesn't hurt good people. I raised him to be one after all. He’s also intelligent. The best I could ever ask for a right hand and companion.”
Leviathan came into realization. As though he just found the missing piece of the puzzle.
Creases forms between Leviathan’s brows as he senses the weird air round them again. And he felt he knew what’s going on.
“Y/N, let me ask you something.” He gulped, having second thoughts of prying over someone else’s lid. “...where are the other mermaids?”
Caught off-guard of his question, they faltered for a bit, “Why? One mermaid is not enough for you?” They try to make light of it but Leviathan knew it was not something he could just ignore. Not with the situation they are in right now. Not with his presence in their realm.
Leviathan may be clueless of mermaids’ existence, but that’s probably because of the lack of evidence and the vastness of the ocean. It was the first time he had ever seen one, but he had some knowledge from the books he read and legends he heard. And according to it, mermaids are rare beings that could bring lifelong blessings to anyone who has seen one. “Where are the other mermaids?” ...a rare being that brings blessings…
Resigning to him, they closed their eyelids. When they opened it, the corner of their lips ascended. Wistful mist shrouding their eyes. At that time, Leviathan could hear his heart shatter into pieces. “Who knows… The last time I saw one was when we had a guest over. I’ve been the sole ruler of this place since then.” His eyes felt hot, like it wanted to be a channel of the pain they wouldn’t release. “Hey, don’t make that funny face. It doesn't suit you—”
“Why did you bring me in? Shouldn’t you be wary of strangers? What if I were also a threat like them?”
“Really? You? The one sulking because he grew horns and tail moments ago?”
“Then what if I were just a bait, huh?”
“A half-dead snake won’t pass as bait to me.”
“That’s not the point! I’m a demon! My presence is screaming danger! Why would you bring danger to your home and repeat the past?!”
“Okay, calm down...” They sighed before pulling him on a nearby rock. “Yeah, I know what I did was foolish. And I’ve been much more careful before you. But after living for thousands of years, I think evading is not the right choice. Even my clan came up with the same answer, considering they helped the beings who obliterated my kingdom and seized my kind.”
“But didn’t they fail and lose everything?”
“And what did I bet you?” … Everything…
“I’ve been protecting everything they left me with all my might since the day they all disappeared, as I hid in the shadows. But surviving for a long time this way… Can I truly say I’m alive, or am I merely existing?”
Leviathan’s lips shriveled, shutting all words he wanted to express. He never thought of it, even though he’s also been alive a long time. Living with his family. Doing what he wants to. He has been living his life freely. Unlike them.
They were all alone, shackled to the throne and loneliness. He can never understand what they’ve been through.
“I already want to give up. I was... That is until I saw a snake on the verge of death. His thoughts were so loud, I could hear it even if he is yet to become a sea creature. A being longing for his family... like I did back then. Like I still do. So if you’re wondering if I’m throwing my life away, no I don’t. I’m simply gambling with you to find my own answer and make up my own mind… Though, I don’t think it’ll be possible.”
“To find your answer?”
“To make this bet with you. You’re too kindhearted and probably hate such a big responsibility. And I already found it in our conversation. Let’s just change the stakes, shall we?”
“I don’t see the purpose of this bet, then.”
“Ehh, you still owe me your life, you know. Let me be selfish for once and just agree, will you? Let’s both wager to be something special. I promise this won’t be needing such a big responsibility as ruling the whole ocean. I’ll even help you get to Devildom.”
“Okay, alright. I accept your proposal… But at least tell me. Why do we need to make such a bet?”
“Hmm… dunno, some sort of insurance? So I could see you once more.”
“...You don’t have to make any bets and such. I will visit you even without such a thing.”
They shook their head, “It’ll be more fun this way. So you will look forward to our next meeting if you ever win. So I’ll last longer in your memories.”
They didn’t have to go such lengths anymore. Leviathan is already certain. They are already engraved in his mind for the rest of his long life. There’s no way he could ever forget such a person, even on his deathbed. They…
“Hmm. Watch me win this bet.” … a being who gave him a second chance and newfound hope. A lifeform who basks with their own despair. An existence filled with contradictions…
“I found my answer.” They said, “I won’t hide like a turtle in its shell anymore. I’ll live my life to the fullest, and I will give life to this kingdom my ancestors left me. I just have one favor to ask you.”
“What is it?” He was drawn into their sparkling eyes, like how they were into his.
“Please. Be the—”
“...evi… Levi… Devildom to Leviathan!! My gosh, are you ignoring me?” Asmodeus shook him as he dazely moved his nimble fingers on the gamepad, speedrunning an rpg-romance game he could finish with his eyes closed.
“What?” He removed his headphones after he paused his game. Behind him stands the fifth-born, second-born and the human exchange student living with them for a year.
“You told me you’ll help me shop for a fine fabric for the clothes we’ll make. We’re already leaving so why are you still playing?”
“Huh? I already added some to the cart.”
“Add to cart– Levi, we’re shopping on Majolish! And here I am excited to shop with my brother who rarely leaves his room! We barely spend time together!”
“Ehh? So troublesome. I still have a game to finish later, and you’re the one who didn’t clear up that we’ll be shopping on Majolish and not Akuzon.” He placed his headphones back and pressed continue.
“You should have mentioned it. When you say shopping to Levi, Akuzon is the first thing that’ll come to his mind...” MC sighed.
“Yep, that’s Levi for ya.” Mammon agreed.
“No matter. Levi is coming with us to majolish today!”
“I refuse. I’m busy.”
“You… Then forget it and indulge with your romance game, you shut-in! I bet no one has ever kissed you in real life!” At this point, Asmodeus already gave up with his plans and just insulted Leviathan to vent his anger.
“Too bad, but someone already did.” Leviathan nonchalantly replied, still playing his game. At first, no one understood his words. Yet after a few moments, the three glanced at each other, confirming if they all heard it right.
“Someone… what?” MC was the first one who recovered from the trance.
“You’re joking. No way, that’s impossible.” Mammon on the other hand snorted.
“Who? How?” Forgetting their purpose in the room, much less his anger, Asmodeus stared at his third brother, wide eyed.
Yet, without saying anymore, Leviathan smirked confidently, his eyes not leaving the screen.
“Impossible…” Mammon gaped, with a trace of disbelief and bewilderment.
“Who is it? Tell us, tell us!” Their purpose in the room already forgotten, Asmodeus chirped as he clung to Leviathan.
It was such a wistful memory, leaving a sour yet sweet taste in his tongue.
Back then he met them once more, receiving his prize after 'winning' the bet. “I told you, even if one of your siblings weren't waltzing on the face of Devildom, you win. A deal's a deal.” is what they said, insisting he take his prize and treasure it.
All his siblings were present in the Devildom the time he met them, except… He didn’t see his sister’s form anymore. The mermaid saw through it, and insisted on taking their prize.
Surreal… It was like a vivid dream, yet Lotan was proof its former master really existed. He received their beloved right hand and the privilege to rule a large platoon of sea creatures. Was it to console him again? Or to give a better life to Lotan? Maybe it was related to the favor they asked him. He never found out the answer to his question.
Me being alive at this moment… Is more than enough proof I met you. You didn’t really have to go such lengths...
“Please be the witness. That this kingdom lived. That my ancestors… that I existed.” amidst their clear, sparkling eyes meeting his own, they asked him a favor.
You don’t have to ask either. I’ll be a living witness… a proof of your existence.
“Okay, alright! Stop shaking me, geez! I’ll tell the whole story to everyone later, during dinner at the Demon Lord’s Castle. I’ve been thinking of telling Diavolo about them anyways.”
“Yes!!” The three rowdy people in Leviathan’s room high-fived themselves.
He never seen them since then. Yet, it was the most beautiful moment of his life. They were the most beautiful moment in his life. Like an unrealized dream he discovered the second he set his eyes on them.
Like they gave him the second chance in life, he will keep their tale alive, through the books he wrote anonymously and now, through the history of the Devildom itself. He’ll make their wish a reality. So wherever they are right now, he hoped they could still hear his thoughts, and continue smiling brightly, exactly how he saw them that day.
Finally done editing!! I posted it as promised~~ I am also finally contented with the ending of this. I've been pondering over it the whole time that I ended up holding this one since I wrote this. Don't ask since when, it's been months because it was buried under my school works hehehe.
I always have this headcanon that Leviathan had been to the ocean before he came to Devildom and meet his brothers again and gain an ability to breathe underwater. That he got Lotan from someone, that's why I wipped this whole fic up, nyehehehe.
What happened next, I'll leave it to your imaginations *winkies* Time to jump on another fic~~

Safe Haven ~Another Story~
A Diavolo Barbatos x GN! MC fanfic
1.92k words
Genre: angst
Trigger warning: Insane deadly stunt but not suicide, please don't read if you have this triggers. And please don't try this at home... or anywhere
As long as the most precious people in his life are happy, it is enough for him.
Yet, a flame inside him keeps on burning... more... And more...
He won't say it. Seeing as that person is so enraptured with the man he called his master. How his master treasured their company. He is just happy as the two smile, hand in hand.
He couldn't remember when it all started. When was the time his spring bloomed? Was it when he got a glimpse of their smile, the time they and the prince were secretly fleeing for their safe haven? Was it when they would help him tend with the preparation and cleaning after the afternoon tea? Or maybe the times they always insist on lending a hand on the endless work he had? Maybe after learning how keen their eyes are, being able to distinguish when he is at his limit despite hiding it so well? Or probably when he witnesses the fire in their eyes, their passion in everything they do? He had a means to confirm it, shouldn't Diavolo forbid him from using it on such trivial things.
Disobeying the future king's order is out of question. It's not like he has any plans in doing so. He doesn't have any reasons to. Everyone knows how loyal he is to his liege. A logical subject who wants nothing but happiness and the best for him and the Devildom.
Yet for a moment, he thought of telling them the bond Diavolo kept on disregarding without even meeting the lady. Without looking through his vision, It doesn't sit well with him. Like it will all go wrong once the glass is tipped off and make a big mess on everything around it.
But he didn't. Not when Diavolo commanded him to keep it a secret. Not when it is going so well with the two; when they have each other as their safe haven.
Barbatos won't deny the sour taste in his mouth whenever he sees them holding hands. The sting every time they embrace each other. The pang squeezing his heart whenever he would witness them kiss passionately, hovering over the cliff beside the blinding sunset. He won't admit it either.
Gazing at a flower nourished with care from a distance is better than plucking it and keeping it to yourself. The flower is blooming so beautifully, cultivated with the sunlight and nourishment.
With no way of extinguishing it, the flame inside him kept on burning stronger... Stronger...
The only way to quell it is to convince himself his master and the one who brought him his bittersweet spring, is satisfied with each presence.
Until it is not.
Princess Rosa showed up that night. She took Diavolo's heart by storm. Diavolo did the same. The gear of destiny was returned to where it was supposed to be.
The glass was tipped. The flower, oblivious, was stained with the murky liquid, losing its vibrant colors. And without being able to do anything, it was deprived of warmth and care. It was withering, in darkness, in chilliness.
"They should see the light at least." Barbatos decided to defy Diavolo for the very first time. To do what he thinks is right.
"I hate to break it to you but the lady you met back then, is the Young Master's... fiancée and his soulmate." How Barbatos wished they just spilled their tears, seeing how the fire in their eyes died instead. He is the one who snuffed it out. He killed the fire that he had loved.
"I... see... Thank you for telling me this." It broke him into pieces, seeing as to when they should have been seeking comfort, they chose to act strong.
"... I'm sorry I brought trouble to you." And as sharp as always, they saw through him, and thought of him even at a time like that.
"Thank you, really..." Barbatos couldn't do anything but watch their back fade from his view. How could he offer relief, if they kept that face and silently wished for him to believe they are a strong person? How could he?
"What is the meaning of this, Barbatos?" Of course Diavolo is displeased. He's been a loyal butler until that moment.
"I truly apologize, Young Master. I will accept any punishments." The upset prince stared at him as he calmly stood his grounds. He did what he did.
"I see... I'll let this one slide. But remember, I don't want any mishaps like this in the future. Keep your hands off Y/N."
"I will, Young Master." Diavolo didn't bat another glance at him before heading to his study.
Diavolo found him out. And his last command made him unable to do anything for them.
All he could do is watch his flower lose its hue. Cast in the shadow he witnessed, how rather than growing a stronger stem, it developed thorns. He witnessed how their orbs full of light became a pitless abyss when they thought they're alone.
Yet, Barbatos also saw how this flower kept on blooming facing Diavolo's farewell. Their sun waning from their horizon. Fighting the impulse to ever lash and make anything harder for him.
Just like how they could read him, he knew everything about them.
The day had come. It's a joyous occasion, when Diavolo was finally crowned as the King and... tying the knot with Princess Rosa.
It's not like Barbatos isn't glad for his lord. He found true love. The kingdom finally has it's official Rulers after a fairly long time.
Barbatos is glad for the Devildom. But knowing someone he loved is suffering, he can't bring himself to be truly happy.
He glanced around and saw them walking towards the married royalties. They seemed normal, equally celebrating the event.
They were smiling, placing a hand on their chest, "Congratulations to your Wedding, our new King and Queen. I wish nothing but prosperity to the land of Devildom and... happiness to the both of you." A lie. It was a lie, hidden beneath their bowed head. Inside the pair of abyss only the butler knew.
As much as he wanted, it is impossible to keep his eyes on them the whole time, as the place is as busy as it can get.
Soon, Barbatos' heart jumped out of his throat. They... disappeared from the scene. He swiftly searched for Lucifer to leave his post to him and scanned the party once more.
Nothing. He couldn't find them. Leaving them alone is the last thing Barbatos wants to do. They are in no state to be able to watch for themself.
However, if they really want to be alone, there is only one place they would run to.
He found them there. In their safe haven... or atleast, used to be.
Even from a distance, he could feel it. The wrath flaring from them. Pain, sorrow, rage, envy. All of the dark emotions they kept to themself. The feelings only this secret shadow knows beside the person themself.
"WHY?! What did I do to deserve this?!" He may not be able to understand everything they say. The pain and sorrow of being unable to be with someone you truly love. To express what you really feel for them.
He watches them move to the forget-me-nots they once took good care of. It was still vivid to his mind. How they would carefully water it and tend to it almost everyday. How they would gently caress it. With tender gaze they would mumble Diavolo’s name. And presently, how they suddenly… ravish it.
“What useless plants!!” They yank it from the roots; tear it with fury, not minding the cuts and splinters it caused on their palms.
"True love?! It was only me from the very start!!" He couldn’t do anything. He can’t disobey any more of his master’s command. He could only peer as the flowers were torn into pieces. His flower… and two hearts break ruefully, dreadfully.
When the flowers were no more, they cried, they screamed, piercing through his ears-- stabbing through his heart.
As the sky is covered with the familiar hues of red, they looked at the tip of the cliff. Each step they took towards it increased the drumming inside his chest. Bit by bit, he could feel his throat dry up.
When they faced their back on the deadly cliff, his breath hitched.
"Wha..." It was a dejavu. At times he would feel something more than a tingle on the base of his foot. The moments he would repeatedly want to jump to the sheer drop whenever they do. He barely manages to stop himself every time, knowing Diavolo is there for them.
But there’s no Diavolo. There’s no one who will save them.
No one.
They will die.
“... No...” it was a soundless howl, as if a jab hit his lungs.
Barbatos has never been as fast as he is at that moment. To hell with Diavolo’s command. Never in his wildest dreams did he think that phrase would cross his mind.
As they lay onto nothingness, Barbatos reached their spot. And without wasting a second he reached for their hand stretched towards the golden and red sky; reaching for the hue they love so much.
Just for today. He’ll curse Diavolo, just for today. For being unable to stand his words. For falling for someone he said he won’t be able to. For breaking a human’s heart. For giving them false hope.
For robbing them of their safe haven.
“Please don’t do this...” this time he'll protect them. Unlike his master, who neglected them.
"I pledge I will never leave you. You don't have to suffer alone anymore. So please, will you give me your permission?" After a moment of them being a crying mess, Barbatos finally asked, letting go from the embrace to gaze at their face.
"I—there's no way you..." Shock, confusion and concern were plastered on their face as they tried to peer in his orbs to no avail. Their eyes were too puffy and vision was too fuzzy. "...but why me?"
"Why can't it be you?" but he returned it with another question, wiping a remnant of tears on their completely red and swollen eyes.
"I'll only hurt you. You'll only feel miserable for choosing someone who doesn't love you."
Removing his arm around them, he knelt on one knee and gently yet firmly, grasped their palm between his own. "The only dream I truly had in this long life I had is to be able to touch and take care of the flower I have always been watching from afar. And it’ll break me so, to see it wither all over again. So, will you let me cherish and support the most beautiful flower I have ever seen?"
All the words were blocked in their throat as sobs were threatening to spill again. They were too overwhelmed with the sensation. It was the familiar heart-warming, compassionate feeling they’ve longed for seemingly an eternity. They felt so happy yet distressed… for at the back of their mind, something is this hoping that the prince was the one holding them.
With one hand Barbatos pulled a handkerchief, to wipe the tears flowing from their eyes again, the other hand still holding their’s.
"...Bar...ba–" they couldn’t even utter his name between their sobs. I don’t want to hurt you… Unconsciously, they also clasped his hand in theirs, pulling it to their trembling lips.
"To bring back your smile will also be my happiness." Barbatos smiled softly from the gesture, as he pulled them for another embrace.
"I will be your safe haven."

A Barbatos x GN! MC fanfic
1.98k words
Genre: angst
Trigger warning: None
It was the same cliff… trees and breeze... The same dusk… But the voice calling them were not anymore...
… sensitive yet capable... One that withstand pain and hardship yet kept their gentleness.
Despite it being in the middle of the day, the sky enveloping the Devildom is dark. Very unlike that place. A place where the sun would shine so brightly even from the back of their mind. Not the human world where they grew up. Not the Celestial realm they visited once. It was only the Devildom whose light came from the moon and not the sun. Should the moon doesn’t exist in this kingdom, it’ll surely be pitch black.
Yet, in the dimness of the kingdom they’ve suddenly been to... Who would have thought I would meet my sun in such a place? A smile formed on their face as they delved deeper in their thoughts.
As they did so, a strong wind blew past them. It was strong, they didn’t notice someone approaching them.
“Oh!” a pat on their shoulder snapped them back from their deep thoughts.
“Y/N? What are you doing?” They flit their head behind and meet with the same, familiar eyes.
“Lord Diavolo... Nothing. And Queen Rose? Did something happen?” Their surprised demeanor was replaced with a confused one. Why wouldn’t it? Since unless some responsibility on the Kingdom required to, the royal couple is technically attached at the hip. Which is still pretty rare.
“Stop with those formalities. You’re making me sad.” As if he were not such a tall, well-built demon, Diavolo looks at them like a weeping dog.
“Alright, I’m just teasing you... So, what happened?”
“Rose got angry over one of my posts on Devilgram.” His pout becomes more obvious as he complains to them like a child.
“Oh, that picture.” Diavolo didn’t have to elaborate further for them to guess which one it is. It was a picture of Diavolo pecking the Queen on her cheek on their bed chamber.
“Even if I were her, I would be mad. You’re the rulers of Devildom after all. You can’t afford showing any vulnerability to your people.”
“But love is our strength!” He emphasized the last word with his hand gesture and furrowed brows.
Which only received a giggle from the human. “You sound like those princesses in the movie we watched yesterday.”
“Hey, I’m being serious… Since when did you take her side anyway?”
“I’m just speaking with reason.”
“You’re so harsh these days. Where is the angel I knew? Barbatos is rubbing on you a bit too much.”
“I won’t be if you were a bit more reasonable. And remember, Simeon can be scary too sometimes.”
Diavolo paused for a moment to think. “Right.” And let out a sigh. “Why can't I win a debate with you? I'm the King, you know.”
“Then be glad I'm an ally.”
“But Y/N...” Diavolo stared at them for a moment. “I noticed you're becoming more beautiful. More than ever.”
“...Where’s Queen Rose? She needs to know the king’s flirting with his ex—”
“Hey, I don't mean it! I mean, not that way! You're beautiful as a friend.”
“Beautiful more than ever as a friend, yes?”
“I mean it with pure intention! And Rose is the most beautiful! You know that!”
“Most beautiful. Favorite line, huh…” They sassily fiddled with their nails as they stared at it.
“Let's settle this here? I-I'll even grant you a wish.”
They glanced at him from their nails and stared at him. “Pfft— Hahaha!! I'm kidding, I’m kidding, pfft— hahaha! You should have seen your face, hahaha!”
“Are you messing with me again?” He frowned at them.
“I was but, hey. A wish from the King is rather enticing.”
Looking straight in their eyes, “Are you still mad because of our past?” he asked. As if he's been holding this question back for so long. In guilt of what they have been through because of him.
And with a smile, they replied “No.”
It was the truth.
They could never hold anything against Diavolo. They can never hate the man they fell in love with…
“Your face is just so hilarious I can't help it.” Rather, they wanted to see that expression one last time. That expression I adored way too much, as I fell beside the cliff.
“Since when did you become so fickle?” Yet despite his words, a sense of relief emanates from the Royal Demon.
He is now certain. He is finally free from the shackles he created himself. And they...
“Spare Barbatos some slack. Some regular day offs will do too and you’ll be absolved of your offense.” Without Diavolo being able to snap a last glance on their face, they turned their back to him and started walking. Despite it, a smile formed on his face.
“Consider it done...” He said as they wave as a response before disappearing from his sight.
I see you’re finally free from my curse... Diavolo chuckled as he left to return to his queen, ready to ask for another forgiveness.
---------
“Y/N.” It was the same cliff. The same trees and breeze. The same dusk who witnessed everything. But the voice calling them were not the prince’s anymore.
“Barbatos, you’re early.”
“I apologize for always making you wait for me but,” worry was showing on his face as he looked at them. “...do you always wait here this early?”
“Don’t mind it. I love waiting for you.” Barbatos’ heart skipped a beat from their words, a tint of pink forming on both person’s ear tips.
“A-Ah, right. You didn’t tell me you'll plant some flowers here.” They touched the petals of the Forget-me-not flowers as if to avert the butler’s attention.
It was as healthy as the one they took care of or perhaps even healthier.
“Were they not to your liking?”
“No, I… love them.”
“Then I'd be glad if that were the case. I raised them with the thoughts of you after all.” Even though Barbatos’ remarks were always like that, they couldn’t help but feel bashful everytime.
“Seriously, how can you say some cheesy lines so smoothly?”
“Hmm? I don’t recall saying such things.” He lifted a knuckle under his chin while glancing upward as if in thoughts.
“This guy..!” All they could do is shut up and frown. They couldn’t remember a time where they actually won on Barbatos’ wordplays.
“Is there something that displeases my flower?” Barbatos moved towards them when the frown they wore turned into a sad smile when they glanced again at the blue flowers.
“Well...” they sighed, Barbatos now stepping in to caress their face. “I just remembered the poor flowers I destroyed that day. I cared for them for a long time only to die from my own hands.”
Barbatos brushed his thumb to their cheek, fondness reflected in his eyes. “But they didn’t.” It was still like a dream for him to be able to hold them freely as he wished.
“What do you mean? Of course they will. I pulled them all off the ground myself.”
“Would you believe me if I said this plant was your flower’s seedlings and roots?”
“Y-You mean..!?” The human’s eyes snapped back to the Forget-me-nots. That’s probably why the flowers have the exact same shade and size as back then.
“I thought it’ll be a great gift for you.” He let them go to squat and check the flowers closely.
It took a while as they observed and admired the lush flowers. It was a comfortable silence, as Barbatos watched his favorite bud.
“Hey Barbatos.” Finally satisfied from staring at it, they rose on their feet. “I had some silly idle thoughts a while ago.”
“What is it?” He asked. But unlike them, the demon butler’s eyes never left his favorite flower. He could spend another millenia just gazing at them, and still say it’s the best sight he's ever seen.
“Devildom is a dark place no matter how I try to think of it.” He watch their back across the nightfall. The way the cold breeze brush through their locks. Those subtle shivers they give off as chills bites at their sensitive yet capable arms. One that withstand pain and hardship yet kept their gentleness.
“Then how come of all places, I’ll meet my sun there?” He tread beside them, not minding their words.
Not even the fondness in Barbatos’ eyes yields. Not in the slightest.
He knew. It was Diavolo. It will always be his Young Master. “He was so bright. So dazzling yet I couldn’t take my eyes off him. Diavolo will always be my sun.” And he… He already accepted this fact a long time ago. Staying by their side, until they found their happiness, is more than enough for him.
So instead of reacting, he removed his coat and placed it over their shoulder.
“I won’t forget. I will cherish the memories he left, no matter how painful it is. After all, he and the memories,” but they were thinking differently from Barbatos. They spun on their feet, suddenly facing him, who was just a few inches away from them, “...they all led me to my moon.” Their eyes were glistening, with him reflected in it. It took his breath– his words away.
“Shining through my darkest nights. Cradling me with its gentle light. Brushing off the tears from my eyes. My precious moon, who helped me remember that there’s still happiness beyond my sorrow.” They reached for his face. “Nights were supposed to be cold, yet he brings warmth instead. And you know what’s the most amusing thing?”
“In Devildom, whether it is day or night, you can see the moon in its brightest.” He never wants to assume anything, yet the way their thumb runs across his cheek so tenderly… The hope he hid with all his might, surges out wanting to be freed.
“Oh, but there is just one problem with my moon. He was so selfless, he wouldn't take me to himself.” The hand next to his cheek moved and brushed to the tip of his nose.
“Pardon?” He thought he finally sealed it away so perfectly, so why… With just a single touch…?
“I don’t wanna be single forever yet he keeps on ignoring my signs...”
“Wait, you mean…” But his promise… his vow to them...
“I still can’t say I don’t have any more feelings with Diavolo but I swear, I mean it. That’s why I’m already taking this to my hands… Hey–!” The knot within Barbatos’ heart came undone, along with the stream of tears he’s holding back due to their dreamlike words.
“Barbatos. Hey, don’t cry.”
They tried scooping his face with both hands only to stop by his own.“I’m so happy.” He placed one of their hands on his chest. It was warm, with his heart practically drumming crazily fast.
He never knew it’s possible to feel happier than the day they allowed him by their side. Incomparably so. It was at that moment he felt so… alive.
“I thought it’ll be a great gift for you.”
“This is the greatest gift I’ve ever received in my life.” He pulled their other hand and placed a tender kiss on its palm.
“I wonder if I can surpass this next time.”
“Then how about a kiss? Can I kiss you?”
“You don’t have to ask,” They took another step towards him, “I love you, my Luna.”
“I love you more, my Flora.” Barbatos sewed the space between them and soon, two breaths became one. All the words dissolved between their lips. Yet, all the emotions bottled up within poured out.
Of loneliness. Of longing. Of elation. Of attachment and inclination. With a spice of passion and devotion. All swirling together, filling the gaps in their hearts.
They parted just to converge again, like how their threads of fate crossed, unraveled and intertwined together.
The coldness of the night now utterly nonexistent within their moment, as they were embraced by the vivid rays of moonlight.

A Belphegor x GN! MC fanfic
3.14k words
Genre: Angst
Trigger warning: mention of death. Read at your own discretion.
Requested by: @belphiesimpalways thank you for patiently waiting for this. Supposedly, this is for your birthday but still, belated Happy Birthday to you!! This became a little bit too long, and I actually changed the whole thing twice 😅😅 I changed the title too to prevent confusion, hope you don't mind.
He lost it the day he lost his beloved sister. A place to call his home. Yet he met them. The one who brings light to his dark days. But what shall he do, when this solace was never been his?
“How I wished I didn’t met you at all.”
Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock.
He can hear the harrowing sound of the clock, ringing inside the closed space. As if it were imitating his increasing pulse. Belphegor couldn’t open his eyes. He won’t though, even if he can. He fears he’ll see it again. The agonizing sight of that cursed attic, where he is trapped, cold and lonely. Each click, each clack drives him on a brink of madness.
Somebody please make it stop..! Curled up in his bed, writhing in anguish, Belphegor tried to block the sound with his trembling hands.
Let me out… I hate this place...
“It is for your own good.” Lucifer’s voice reverberates throughout the whole room. His guide light and the hero of his stories… once upon a time, that is.
For my own good? This place was a nightmare! He was imprisoned! He was trapped inside his head, with nothing but bleak thoughts!
He felt cold, with no one to hold onto. With no Beelzebub or Lilith, ready to embrace him when he’s afraid…
Ahhh…
Right…
Even if he managed to escape that place, there’ll be no more Lilith to hold him. To comfort him. To make him laugh of joy and happiness. No more… Lilith is no more…
“...Belphegor?” he snapped his eyes open and suck in a deep breath, as if the voice pulled him out of the deepest pit of the abyss. His heart was beating fast, bathed in his own sweat.
It was just another dream. He was not trapped in the attic any more. He was freed, by the person with him right now, sitting beside his bed, a few weeks ago. “Are you alright? You’re sweating buckets and squirming in your sleep.”
“I’m fine. It was just pretty hot in here.”
They stared at him for a moment before replying. “...If you say so… Wait, let me get you some water and a change of clothes.” unconsciously he raised his hand, fingers tugging on the hen of their shirt which stopped them from their tracks.
“Don’t need one… Just stay here and be my pillow.” Still, feeling a bit anxious of being alone, he didn't let go.
“That won’t do. You’re so drenched. If you don't change clothes and rehydrate, you might get sick. I'll be back in a jiffy.” Yet as they swiftly pried his hand off their clothes, he couldn't do anything but to watch them stride out of the room.
He sighed, recollecting the series of events from the time he met them. “...What a weird person...” He muttered under his breath.
A few weeks ago… Just a few weeks ago, they succeeded in freeing him... Just a few weeks ago, they died by his hands... Yet, they kept on approaching him like nothing had happened.
But oddly enough, he also couldn't get them off his mind; to want them by his side. The only time he could find his peace of mind is when he's with them.
I guess I'm weird too...
Silently, he observed them. The way they speak and walk. The way they would scold him when he chose to nap over catching up his missed lessons. The way they tap and hum unconsciously, while studying with him to encourage him to do so. Those awkward laughs they made as they tried to mend the rift between him and his brothers. The sighs left their lips as his brothers fought over who would have them. The slow and silent steps they make to slip away. The way they wink and place a finger over their lips and pull him with them.
Especially the way their eyes disappear when they're smiling. He can never describe how soothing it was, that smile.
...until he suddenly felt it wasn't.
The way they make the very same smile to Lucifer, Belphegor couldn't help but feel a little bit too irritated. Yes, it was Lucifer. He’s naturally annoyed by him, after what he's done. But this is a little bit different from his usual displeasure.
The youngest just wanted to pry the human off him and drag them away. He knew he couldn't suppress the burning sensation rising from the pit of his stomach. He also knew he'll regret what he wanted to do. He'd look possessive. Delusional. He may even hurt them in the process. So, he chose to escape the scene instead, into the attic which was once his prison.
“Belphegor! I got... and you're asleep.” the demon dares not open his eyes as he hears them make their way to him. “You didn't even remove your uniform...or your shoes. I'm really amazed how you can fall asleep in a matter of seconds.” They carefully remove the shoes and socks from his soles.
Oh no... That's not a good thing. For every touch of their skin sends tingles throughout his entire body. Each cell screaming in a way he never felt before. The bed shook as they crawled in, reaching for the buttons of his vest. He was at his wit's end, completely conscious of the human's presence.
Before they could ever reach for the last row of buttons, his hand stopped them before he lose it.
“What do you think you're doing?”
“Y-You're awake?!” Before they could ever pull back, he tugged them in his chest, flustering the human even more.
“H-Hey, let go. Your uniform will get wrinkled.” They tried squirming out to no avail. The demon is just too strong to make him budge.
“Don't want to.” To hide his warm and probably beet red face, he clasped their nape and keep their face over his shoulder.
“I still haven't changed out of mine.”
“Hmm, goodnight...”
“Hey...” after a few more stirring in vain, they just sighed and let the youngest have it his way.
This is bad. Thought Belphegor. The annoyance he felt a while ago dissipates as fast as it builds up inside of him. Still, his heartbeats and head were in utter chaos, the time he held them so close. He said he’s returning to slumber, yet his heart showed no signs of ever slowing down. He bet they could hear it, but he have no more energy to even mind it. After all, amidst the chaos in him, could also feel he won’t be getting any nightmares right now.
“Say Belphegor. Do you have a fever? You’re hot and your heart’s beating a bit too fast.”
“Just tired from the extra work a while ago. I just need some rest.”
“If you say so...”
He could no longer deny this feeling inside him.
He… fell in love with a human. He found it, the peace to his raging storm. The salve to his wounds. But they can never be his solace.
He lost it the day he lost his beloved sister. He lost his home. His freedom. He doesn’t have anything but his disgusting self, who could only obsess over keenly observing each and every move they make. Like a stalker. Like a creep. Like a predator eyeing its prey.
But they were never been his. And the day they learnt of his habit is the day they will be disgusted by him.
“Lucifer!” and the fact that they were attached to his eldest brother— the one who robbed him of his freedom once— didn’t help.
They would link arms around his. Heck, even snuggled to it as they do so, with that widest smile upon their face. The small giggles they give off as the abomination in the form of his brother praised them while petting them. Oh, how he wanted to just cut off that hand straying onto them! How dare he touch–
…them that might have already belonged to him, long before he could enter the picture…?
No. There's just no way that heartless brother of his to fall for a mere human. That brother who bowed down to a demon the day his sister died. And the human who taught him how to love again, to fall for Lucifer. That’s just… impossible… It’s just too cruel…
But I love them too! I can love them more than that fiend who chose a demon over his family!
“No, you’re much crueler…” He could hear the whispers at the back of his mind. “Have you forgotten what you did? You killed them. Do you think you have any rights to even lay a finger on them? You spiteful, wretched, monster…”
…Right… He has no rights to have them… He lost it before he could realize the weight of his actions… It was the painful truth. A punishment for a sinner like him. He could regret it until his last breath but he could never be forgiven.
He doesn't deserve to have a place in their heart. Never. Never…
The door to the twins’ room creaked open and he knew exactly whose footsteps it was without the need to look. “Belphegor, Lucifer gave me some sushi. You like this, right? Let’s eat it while it’s fresh.”
Lucifer again, huh...
“It’s yours. Eat it yourself.” There’s no more point in fighting a lost battle.
Let it grow, “Ehh? But you like—”
“Let’s stop this.” … or let it go.
“…Huh? Stop what?”
He also fears what he might do in the future due to this rotten affection of his. “Just as I thought, I couldn’t stand humans. You’re so naïve and trusting. I’m already fed up with dealing with your antics.”
“Wait, I don’t understand…” They asked, confusion and unease were all over their face.
“You don’t? Then let me explain in a way you’ll understand in that small, gullible brain of yours.” He took a deep breath. He needs to keep his cool or he will definitely break in front of them, “Everything is all an act. You thought I like being with you? Think again, fool. Having a human around me fills me with nothing but wrath and anger! Who do you cause my nightmares!? Your race disgusts me to death! Just looking at you makes me want to puke!”
“B-Belphegor… please tell me you’re kidding.”
“Kidding? Do I look like I’m joking?” he scoffed, holding back the pain clawing in his chest. “Be thankful for my brothers. If not because of them, you won’t be alive the second time, nor your ignorant race are.
“I won’t touch a hide of you or any human. So please, stop bothering me anymore.” being unable to stifle the emotions on the verge of bursting, he turned his back on the devastated human.
This is for the best. He’s back in his cage. Staring at the lacework of the long-lived spiders on the ceiling. He already witnessed its threads wear and replace countless of times. That might not even be the same spider he saw on his first night there. He could care less. After all, the only time he was truly curious of a being is when he met them.
How he wished the thread of his feelings were as flimsy as the spider’s. That way it’ll fall off over time. It can simply be cut off when it comes on his way.
“How I wished I didn’t meet you at all.” He knows it well. He is a big liar. In some way or another, just like the firstborn. But they deserve him more than his wretched self.
Lucifer, he was the morning star. The fact that both heaven and hell were captivated by his beauty and excellence. But Belphegor… he was nothing but a bleak abyss. He once dreamt of his brother’s greatness. Yet he couldn't be anything. He, miserable and empty, who only had nothing but guilt, regrets and a broken heart— as he watched them weep.
It’s been weeks since then. They never approached him like he said. Neither in the dining table nor classroom do they discern his presence. It was painful, but he can take it. The only unbearable one he felt is catching them cry— in Lucifer’s arms.
How long are they going to cry? Is it still because of him? No… This is for the best...
This is his atonement. His fate. He still couldn’t have anything, yet he already lost everything. His—
Lucifer… He is staring at him straight in the eye. I should leave.
But Belphegor couldn’t leave. Not after the eldest gave him that sly smirk. What does that mea…
Lucifer didn’t give him time to think. “Wha, Lucifer…?” Sound of confusion left their mouth as Lucifer grabbed their chin firmly between his index and thumb, with the menacing look on his face. “What are you—!”
And the gap between their faces disappeared. “Hmph!” The sight of the futile struggle of his beloved in the hands of the man he entrusted them to… made the youngest snap.
“LUCIFER!!!” His horns and tail materializing, he lunged towards him. His clenched fist flying in the air, aiming for his jaw. Yet, as if expecting it, Lucifer evade him, loosening his grip on the stunned human in the process. Belphegor saw this as a chance to pry them away from his brother’s hands, before jumping a few meters away from him.
“When are you going to learn to clean after your own mess, Belphegor?” As if the devious smirk were never been present on his face, Lucifer looked at them with his usual expression.
“What the hell?! You’re the one who assaulted them!!” He snarled like a wild animal, holding his treasure protectively from the threat.
“I didn’t do anything. Ask them yourself.”
“Ask? Do you think I’m blind?!” His stance became stiffer, fangs sheathed and glaring sharply at his brother, who is unfazed.
A light tug on his collar made his eyes soften, and caused him to realize his tight grip on them in which he loosen. “Are you hurt?”
“N-No… Lucifer’s saying the truth… He didn’t kiss me. I was just a bit confused he pressed his thumb over my lips.”
“.... What? Okay, but still—!”
“Do you think I’m a fool, Belphegor?” Lucifer cut him off, “I know what you’re planning. I'm already your brother for thousands of years.”
“...”
“Do you now understand the consequence of your foolish action? You left someone important to you in the care of others. But you didn’t think that sort of thing might actually happen?”
“But it’s you who they love!”
Lucifer’s frown deepens, “Even if it were some lesser demon they’re in love with, I bet you'll leave them in their care.”
“I...” He… Lucifer’s right… No one's more dangerous for them than himself.
Belphegor's horns and tail disappeared as he calms down, processing what his brother is saying.
“Everyone’s dangerous in Devildom, you fool. If you really are sorry for what you did, protect them instead.”
“Protect? But… But I...” Ignoring him, the eldest glanced at the person between the youngest’s arms.
“Do you already get what I’m saying Y/N?” They nod. “Not only are you both foolish and stubborn, but also blind. Now fix this yourselves. I’m done with your drama.” pinching the bridge of his nose, Lucifer left them in that awkward position without another word.
“...I’m really sorry. I was afraid to hurt you more than I already did.” After a moment of silence, Belphegor decided to break it first.
“You already did, you idiot.” Wiping the stray tears on their puffy eyes, Belphegor gave them a sad smile. “I guess I did.”
“But I still don’t think this is alright. Shouldn’t you be a bit more wary around me? I mean you already… died in my hands once.”
“You brat. Do you think I’d cry like that if I we’re okay with not being with you? I've never held a grudge against you in the first place.” They pout.
“Why? How can you forgive me that easily?” The demon frowns at them.
“Well, wouldn't life be more wonderful if we know how to forgive and forget?”
Frustrations were evident in his eyes, Belphegor's frown deepens. “That's not right… I killed you mercile—”
“Then shouldn't I be asking you? Why can't you forgive yourself?” He didn’t answer. Mistakes have already piled up as is.
Forgive himself? Why? Does he hate himself?
...Yes... I probably do... He loathed himself. terribly so... But they, who tasted the his abhorrence. He couldn't understand how they didn't.
“You want you to find happiness.” They cupped his disgruntled face in their palms, foreheads touching as they gave him comfort.
“I can’t.” with glassy eyes, he held a hand on his cheeks, “Not when you are my happiness. Not when you liked my brother.”
“You really are blind. And here I thought I was just assuming things.” their giggles were like music to his ears. Their orbs were like the placid sky set upon him. “You really are blind. And here I thought I was just assuming things.”
“I love you, idiot.” And their words, with no hint of doubt or hesitation, hit him like a surge. It made his feelings overflow, coursing throughout his entire body, and finally spilling on every corner of his eyes. It made him unable to speak. “I’m not even hoping for you to feel the same. I just wished to stay by your side… and for you to cherish yourself like how I’ve been to you.”
Belphegor felt so happy beyond words. Such indescribable feelings swirling inside him, one that he can’t put into words. With so much running inside his head, the only line he could form is… “Thank you.”
Weeping, but from so much joy this time, they huddled in each other's grasp, not caring of their setting, until their hearts finally felt whole again.
And after such a blissful moment, “...that’s it? No I love you too?” They spoke.
“What are you saying? I already said I love you.”
“No you didn’t. Saying I’m your happiness and confessing are separate things.” they frown at him, expecting.
“It’s the same.” Yet knowing how stubborn the demon is, the human raised their white flag, although disappointed.
“Okay, alright…” They sighed, wiping his eyes with a tear-stained handkerchief. “Why am I the one comforting you anyways? I’m the one crying because of you.”
Belphegor smiled mischievously, like he didn’t cry a while ago. “Because I’m the youngest.”
“Ugh, why did I fall for a spoiled brat?” Another sigh left them as they pulled him up, “Let's go, I’m sleepy.”
Yet as soon as he rose on his feet, he placed his arms on the back of their knees and shoulder blades to carry them, gaining a small yelp from them.
“Hey...” no protest managed to leave their lips as he sealed it with a chaste kiss. Probably not their first but it was the sweetest one. It only last a few seconds, but Belphegor knew fully well. This memory will last forever.
“I love you more, my solace.”
